This is why experts have revealed their top tips on saving energy at home to lower household bills.

Gas bills can be easily reduced with these tips to help cut the costs:

Smart thermostat –

When you install a smart thermostat, the technology inside it can quickly determine your household’s patterns and adjust temperatures according to when your home is occupied or not occupied. This allows any cooling systems used in the summertime and heating systems used in the winter to only be in effect at the time of need.

Check the temperature of your water - If you find that the water coming out of your taps is extremely hot, you are likely wasting gas. Turning down the temperature by a few degrees will help reduce this wasted gas and make the temperature more comfortable and usable.

Insulate your home – It is very common that many homes across the UK are not adequately insulated, meaning in the winter, you may struggle to keep your home warm. If possible, opt for loft insulation as heat rises, and most of the heat escaping a poorly insulated house will be via the roof. The cost might seem like a lot at the time, but while the summer

months are upon us and you may be turning the heating on less, why not get it sorted ahead of the winter and thank yourself in the long run.

Water

Water bills can equate to significant amounts of money each month/ year, so it is important to understand how much water you are using and where the most significant waste lies. There are many ways you can reduce the amount of water usage in your household: Replace shower heads – It might sound silly, but by replacing your showerhead, you could significantly reduce water consumption alongside limiting gas usage. Reduce the amount of boiling water – Another easy way to rack up your water bill is by overfilling the kettle. When you overfill you are likely to need to boil it again for the next use, so, by filling the kettle with the specific amount of water you need to make your tea or coffee, it will reduce water wastage and save on electricity.

Dishwashers over sink washes – Contrary to popular belief, dishwashers use less water than sink washes. By filling your dishwasher up to a full load, you will use less water than if you were to spend more time filling up the sink.

Electricity

With technology becoming increasingly advanced, it is great to see the shift from standard plug-in devices to portable and more energy-efficient appliances. But there are still things that can be implemented into your household to reduce your electricity bill: Stand-alone devices –Laptops, phones and tablets that can be used without being connected

to the mains will drastically reduce your power consumption. They are incredible for boosting productivity as they can be used anywhere at any time compared to desktop computers and large monitors.

Turn off non-active appliances - By turning off your standby appliances; you will reduce the amount of electricity usage. A great way to monitor this is by purchasing controllable sockets via an app on your phone, which means you can switch on and off your devices when needed. Cook efficiently –Try to use ovens and other kitchen utilities simultaneously to save energy. Putting the oven on five times a day for smaller amounts of cooking will waste more energy than if you were to cook more food at one time. Try organising what meals your family will have throughout the week so you can work out how often the utilities will be used and for how long. Other top tips that will make a difference:

• Turning off lights in rooms you are not using, alongside heating and any other appliances that are in vacant rooms.

• Fix any leaking taps that may be wasting water

• Use lids on pans that are boiling to speed up cooking time

• Hang out your washing instead of using a tumble dryer;

• Install thick and heavy curtains in colder months to trap in heat

• Take showers instead of baths

• Replace an old boiler to improve efficiency

advICE ON GOOd slEEpING HabITs

Many people will experience trouble sleeping at some point in their lives. In fact, according to the NHS, insomnia is thought to affect around one in three adults in the UK, and is particularly prevalent among the elderly population. Whether you experience hours of tossing and turning each night or only once in a while, insomnia can be extremely frustrating. With this in mind, sleep experts reveal eight potential causes of insomnia.

Caffeine consumption

That innocuous afternoon coffee might be playing more havoc on your ability to sleep than you realise. According to one study, caffeine was found to have a half-life of around five hours in healthy individuals, which means it could take around five hours for half of that caffeine to be cleared from your body. If you are having trouble drifting off in the evening, consider cutting off caffeine 8 to 12 hours before your bedtime. If you typically go to bed at 11 pm, this could mean having your last caffeinated drink at around 1 pm in the afternoon and opting for decaffeinated options for the remainder of the day.

Blue light exposure

The blue light emitted by electronic devices like smartphones and laptops can interfere with your body’s natural sleep cycle. According to a study, blue light disrupts the body’s production of melatonin more powerfully and for twice as long as other wavelengths of light. Try keeping electronic devices

out of your bedroom or avoid using them a few hours before bedtime.

Scheduling the night mode setting on devices, can also filter out some of the blue light emitted from screens in the evening.

Irregular sleep schedule

A regular daily routine for when you go to bed and wake up, normalises your body’s sleep schedule and helps you to feel sleepy and awake at the appropriate times. Going to bed and waking up at different times can disrupt your body’s natural circadian rhythm, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep in the evening. Incorporating a winding down period at the end of the day can help you relax before bedtime and help you fall asleep at a regular time.

Poor sleep environment

An uncomfortable bed or a bedroom that is too bright, noisy, hot, or cold can make it difficult to get quality sleep. The Sleep Foundation suggests keeping your bedroom between 15.6 - 19.4 degrees Celsius for the best quality sleep.

Medications

Some medications, such as antidepressants, steroids, and betablockers, can interfere with the quality and duration of your sleep. If you are experiencing sleep disturbances after starting a new medication, it is important to speak with your doctor.

Alcohol and nicotine consumption

While alcohol can often make you fall asleep faster, drinking it close to bedtime can cause fragmented sleep and can be the cause of frequent waking throughout the

night. A study also found that nicotine consumption is positively correlated with insomnia and sleep disturbances. Nicotine use impacts the body’s ability to fall and stay asleep, thus, quitting smoking might help you sleep better.

Napping

Longer naps later in the day can interfere with our ability to sleep at night. If you need to nap during the day, aim for short naps between 10-20 minutes in the morning or before 2 pm.

Eating before bed

Eating too close to bedtime can also interfere with sleep due to gastrointestinal discomfort and reflux that occur during digestion at irregular hours. Keeping your evening meal lighter and avoiding spicy foods are also good ways to reduce the risk of food interfering with a good night’s sleep.

When to see your GP

If insomnia affects your daily life and has been a problem for longer than a month, especially if the above-listed measures have not been helpful, you may want to make an appointment to see your GP. They will check your medical history for any illness or medication contributing to your insomnia. Some people find over-the-counter sleeping tablets helpful, but they are a temporary fix as they don’t address the underlying causes of insomnia and can have side effects. Thus it is important to make time to see your GP so that they can address the underlying reasons for your insomnia.

pOlICE bRavERY awaRd

A pair of courageous cops who risked their lives charging into a burning building to rescue its elderly occupants have won a South Yorkshire Police Federation Bravery Award.

PC Natalie Butler - and an officer who cannot be named for operational reasons – were first on the scene at the dramatic incident in Doncaster last year. As the first two officers on the scene, PC Butler and her colleague knew they had to act quickly because the fire in the upstairs bedroom was projecting toxic fumes throughout the building. Crowds had gathered outside, warning that there were two vulnerable occupants trapped inside. Without waiting for the fire service to attend, the officers rushed inside to help. One of the elderly occupants was overweight and had mobility issues. The officers managed to get him onto his mobility scooter, which they then had to push outside because it was broken. The female occupantwho was in shock - was also unwilling to go, telling the officers she wanted to stay inside to gather sentimental items, so PC Butler had to work quickly to get her to safety, before evacuating neighbours in case the fire spread. The fire service attended shortly after and fortunately no-one was

hurt.

PC Butler said: “I don’t think I realised when we arrived that the property was almost up in a blaze. I was just focused on getting people out of there. It wasn’t until afterwards when we spoke to the firemen that they said that we were quite lucky. The fire had burned through the floorboards and gone through some electricals.” On winning the award, she said: “It is great to be nominated. You just do this job and you don’t really expect anything from it. That’s policing; we’re there to help people. I didn’t really expect any recognition or anything, so we are grateful to receive it.”

Steve Kent, Chair of South Yorkshire Police Federation, said: “It should never be forgotten that police officers rush in while others stay clear. Without a thought for their own safety, these officers placed themselves at great risk in order to save the lives of two vulnerable people. Their courage, professionalism and calmness when faced with significant danger is to their credit, epitomising the highest values of the police service. We would like to thank them for their exceptional bravery.” PC Butler will attend the South Yorkshire Police Federation Bravery Awards on Thursday 25 May.

The charity is also proud to announce that they can now offer grants of up to £2000. If you don’t already know, The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation provides funding to support individuals and organisations in Sheffield, who through music, make a positive difference to the lives of local people. Until now, grants have been limited to £500, so the new, larger grants are a significant step forward in the level of funding that the charity is able to provide.

Chair of Trustees, Julie Voisey, says “By being able to provide larger grants, we hope that individuals or organisations with a vision they feel might be a bit too financially draining or out of reach, can now access that chunk of funding they need in order to realise their idea or project. We really hope that by

offering this extra level of funding, more local people can be reached, and helped, by the transformative power of music”.

Sheffield Music School has already been a recipient of one of the new grants. The funding has been used to start a new project via its Tracks programme, “A Place Called Home”. The project runs weekly and invites Ukrainian refugees aged 12-16 to take part in music classes, workshops and lessons. The great feedback so far - “Dima was so impressed and excited! It’s amazing! Thank you so much for this opportunity!” - is testament to what can be achieved by having access to a larger funding pot. The larger grants are limited and are offered on a quarterly basis. The first round is open now until 30th June 2023. The smaller £500 grants continue to be available on a year round rolling basis. Friends since they were neighbours in the sixties Dave Kelly & Bob Hall have had illustrious careers in the British Blues Scene and have won many awards for their artistry. Dave Kelly, singer, guitarist and songwriter, is a founder member of The Blues Band (which has recently celebrated its 40th anniversary). Dave cut his teeth in the backing bands of Howlin’ Wolf and John Lee Hooker, and has played with Buddy Guy, Son House & Muddy Waters. The Blues Band have released around twenty albums, and Dave has fifteen more either solo or with his own Dave Kelly Band Bob Hall, singer, pianist and songwriter, is a founder member of The Groundhogs and Savoy Brown. Bob has also accompanied Howlin’ Wolf and John Lee Hooker and a host of blues stars including Little Walter, Lightnin’ Slim and Homesick James. Bob has played on well over a hundred albums, including four solo piano albums and dozens more as band leader or co-leader. Down the years Dave and Bob have had a number of critically acclaimed joint projects, have played in each other’s bands and on each other’s records. With such a pedigree it seemed natural to get together a show to exploit their joint talents. Complimenting the duo is Hilary Blythe on bass, an emotive singer of classic blues and Bob’s partner off-stage. Darren Moore called for a performance –and boy did he get one on an incredible night of play-off drama in S6.

Wednesday had the proverbial mountain to climb and climb it we did all the way to the summit.

Trailing 4-0 from the first leg of this play-off semi-final, the odds were stacked against the Owls against Peterborough. But Moore’s men defied the odds and overturned the deficit in the most dramatic of circumstances, winning 5-3 on penalties after emerging victorious 5-1 in normal time.

Goals from Michael Smith, Lee Gregory and Reece James took Wednesday to the brink before Liam Palmer levelled with the last kick of the game.

Peterborough got their noses back in front on aggregate via

a Gregory own goal but Callum Paterson hauled Wednesday back all square. Penalties were next and Jack Hunt scored the decisive goal to power the Owls to Wembley.

The demand was for an early goal, which was duly delivered nine minutes in.

Marvin Johnson was felled in the box by Joe Ward and the already deafening atmosphere went up a notch when the referee pointed to the spot.

Smith was the coolest person in S6 and sent Will Norris the wrong way from 12 yards. The contest settled, with Wednesday setting the pace while Posh attacked on the counter.

Cameron Dawson had to make smart saves to keep out Kwame Poku and Ephron MasonClark before Norris thwarted Gregory at the other end.

Josh Windass fired over the top after Paterson broke free down the right – then it was 2-0 on 24 minutes.

Paterson was the source, again down the right, and this time Gregory was perfectly positioned to prod into the back of the Kop net.

The tension was palpable as Wednesday poured forward ahead of half time, winning a succession of corners.

The flip side was the danger Peterborough posed on the break and Dawson made a super save at his near post to palm a fierce drive from MasonClark to safety.

The second half stayed the same, with Wednesday on the front foot. A towering header from Smith was inches off target and Gregory rolled back the years with an overhead kick acrobatically saved by Norris at full stretch.

Ronnie Edwards was in the right place at the right time to divert a Paterson hit and Norris did well to beat away a stinging Windass volley.

It was wave after wave of Owls attacks as Posh defended like lions.

But on 71 minutes their rearguard was breached once more.

Palmer motored forward and a clever Gregory dummy allowed James to ghost down the left of the box and slot past the advancing Norris.

That set up a grandstand finish and the song remained the same. Posh were pinned into their own half and were

desperate to see out the tie.

Windass headed into the grateful arms of Norris – before Hillsborough exploded in stoppage time. A long throw from Will Vaulks caused all sorts of problems and the ball found its way to Palmer, who poked home from close range. It was pandemonium in the stands and on the bench and moments after the restart, the referee sounded the full time whistle. Both sides regrouped for extra time, Peterborough’s gameplan had to change and they promptly scored from their next attack five minutes in.

Poku delivered an inviting free-kick into the danger zone, where Gregory inadvertently deflected into his own net.

But still there was more as Wednesday hit back in the second period with seven minutes to go.

Jaden Brown played in Paterson inside the area, his first shot was blocked, but the Scot made no mistake from the rebound, placing neatly past Norris.

Cue more joyous scenes and Ihiekwe so nearly added to the mayhem with a header that whistled just past the post. That proved the final action before penalties would decide this play-off epic – and the Owls triumphed with Hunt applying the final coating of gloss to a truly unforgettable occasion.

A determination to repay the faith of manager Grant McCann was a major driving force behind Ian Lawlor’s return to Rovers.

The goalkeeper has signed a two-year contract at the Eco-Power Stadium to become McCann’s first signing since his own return to the club. Injury limited Lawlor’s gametime during McCann’s previous season at the club, but he was still rewarded with a new deal during that time.

“I did my shoulder and I was out for quite a while but Grant was really good with me,” the 28-yearold said. “I was coming to the end of my contract and he rewarded me with a new deal.

“I said it at the time that I was really thankful for and I’ve never forgot that.

“He showed a lot of faith in me and when the phonecall came from him about coming back, it was the same kind of conversation and it was a no-brainer for me.

“I felt like I had unfinished business with him. I wanted to pay him back more again and coming back to work with him again was a no-brainer.”

The Irish goalkeeper initially joined Rovers from

Manchester City in January 2017 and played a major role in securing promotion from Sky Bet League Two that season.

And the prospect of repeating the feat following his return has been a major draw.

He said: “We had a good promotion that season and when I spoke to the manager, that is our main aim for this season. We want to get out of this league and it’s something I really want to be a part of it.

I had a taste of it before and that’s what we want to do again.”

Lawlor feels he is returning to the club a more rounded keeper than the one that left in the summer of 2021, with his experience in Scotland with Dundee helping his improvement.

He said: “I developed in the time that I was up there.

“I feel like I’ve improved a lot. I’ve worked with different coaches and I feel like I’ve learned a lot. I feel like a more mature goalkeeper, a calmer goalkeeper. I believe in myself.

“And every time I put on the jersey I’ll give 100 per cent for the fans.”
