Mayor continues fight to save Dsa

South Yorkshire’s Mayor and local leaders have approved a funding package to support the reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

At the Board meeting of the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, £3.1m was agreed to help with the costs of building a case for the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) process currently being undertaken by the City of Doncaster Council.

councils also agreed a funding package towards the purchase of the Airport, should the CPO ultimately be successful.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “We haven’t given up on our fight to reopen DSA.

“Since Peel announced their intentions to close our airport, I’ve been working alongside partners from across the region to first keep it open, and now to bring it back into use. We’re not going to stop until we’ve exhausted every option.

“The Compulsory Order

Process is our last, best hope to take back control of DSA, and that’s why today we’ve agreed £3.1 million from South Yorkshire’s MCA to support Doncaster in their pursuit of that CPO, and a funding package to purchase the site should the CPO – as we hope –be successful. There are no easy or quick answers in this process. The CPO could take up to two years, and there are loads of hurdles in the way. But across South Yorkshire we are determined to do everything we can

to bring DSA back into use, and to make it the thriving regional airport we know it can be.”

The £3.1m agreed today will help fund legal fees and costs associated with building a case for a CPO of DSA.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport was closed in 2022 after its owners Peel Group decided the airport was no longer financially viable. Research carried out as part of the region’s response to Peel Group’s review into the viability of the Airport found that DSA supported around 2,700 jobs and contributed more than £100m to the regional economy when it was

Two courageous Sheffield Constabulary officers who were first to the scene of a horrific shooting at a Spital Hill pub more than 60 years ago have won a posthumous South Yorkshire Bravery Award. It is the first time PC Gilbert Robertson and PC Dennis Hastings have been recognised for their courage – and their families proudly collected their Awards posthumously on their behalfs.

It was on New Year’s Day in 1960 when the pair forced their way into the toilet cubicle of the former East House pub in Sheffield. Five people had already been shot in the horrifying incident, three of the five were killed and the two brave officers were unarmed. The gunman, Mohamed Ismail, had barricaded himself into an outdoor toilet, but the officers, carrying only truncheons, called for him to come out. When he failed to, they kicked the door through, overwhelmed Ismail, disarmed him from the live weapon and potentially prevented further death. The officers, who have both since died, had sadly not received any formal recognition of their bravery, until now.

Ross Blackwood, PC Hastings’ grandson, says: “These were proud police officers. They were both traditional; 6 ft, clean cut, and without the apparatus to protect themselves. If it weren’t for the swift actions of these officers, we don’t know whether Ismail would have gone on to cause further injury. My grandad was too humble to ask for any recognition, but this was a story that he’d told us a number of times. We have a pile of newspaper clippings describing courageous acts like this

involving my grandad. He was a brave person who believed in law and order and he wanted to bring that to Sheffield.”

Ross, who still keeps PC Hastings’ truncheon as a keepsake ten years after his grandfather’s death at the age of 87, added: “He would have loved getting this Award. I hope he’s looking down and thinking - thank you very much. It means a lot to the wider family and it is good to continue telling this story.”

Will Banks, PC Robertson’s grandson, added:

“Grandpa didn’t talk about it a lot .” Will, a radio producer, is making a radio documentary about the incident which he hopes will be broadcast by the BBC over the summer. He added: “To learn about his involvement in something so courageous gave a real sense of pride. The whole process of finding out more about him - what kind of a police officer he was, what people remember of him - has been like getting to know him a bit better.

I was only 11 when he died at the age of 66 in 1987, so it’s been really amazing to find out more about him. To be able to tell my mum and Dennis’ family that they are going to get an Award at long last is really amazing. It is a fitting conclusion that they finally get what they deserved more than 60 years ago, even if they aren’t here to see it. It feels really important.”

Ismail was charged with three counts of capital murder, before doctors declared him “insane” and he was sent to Broadmoor.

Will added: “The officers had no stab vests, no radio. Just their wool uniform, a truncheon and a pair of handcuffs. They knew there was a guy that was armed and had shot and killed several people.

When you are standing outside and you make that decision you don’t know what is going to happen. Gilbert was the kind of guy who wanted to help people. He began his career in the Met before going to Sheffield Constabulary. He had a genuine desire to do good things and help people. And this has all made me a lot more aware of the bravery of modern police officers. It’s given me all the more respect for them because I better understand now what it takes.”

Steve Kent, Chairman of South Yorkshire Police Federation, added: “As a Federation we are delighted to finally right this wrong almost 60 years on - and we thank the force for their backing with this. It is hard to imagine what must have been going through those officers’ minds as they entered that smoke-filled pub on New Year’s Eve in 1960. This was an act of incredible police bravery and we are pleased to be able to thank them at long last.”

Relatives of the two officers attended the South Yorkshire Police Federation Bravery Awards on Thursday 25 May where they picked up the Awards on behalf of their family members. At the event, the Federation also revealed that as a fitting honour to the two officers, they will now be renaming the trophy that goes to the overall winners of the South Yorkshire Police Federation Bravery Awards every year as the Gilbert-Dennis Award for Bravery.

Home Preparation Clean and Tidy –Although this might seem impossible in the run-up to your holiday, there are steps you can take:

• Empty out your fridge: No one wants to return home from a holiday to the smell of mouldy and gone-off food. Throw out any food set to go off during your holiday and freeze any food you may want to keep.

• To avoid wasting milk,

purchase long-life milk from the supermarket before you go away, as this will last longer and still be useable on your return.

• Stock up on snacks: Add a few long-life snacks to your cupboards or ready meals into your freezer to indulge in when you return; this will keep you going until you can stock up again.

• Schedule a food delivery for your arrival home: You will allow yourself more time to unpack, reset and prepare for work

• Switch off your water: It is always advised to turn off your water system in your home while you are away. This way, you will avoid any chance of flooding and leaking, which will waste water and money.

• Check your boiler: Many new homes are equipped with a more energyefficient holiday mode that allows you not to have to turn your boiler off for the few weeks you are away.

• Overall maintenance There are also a couple of things that can make sure your home still looks like its occupied:

• Mow your lawn: An overgrown lawn is a huge indicator that your home is empty, so before you go, make sure your front lawn is freshly cut.

• Turn off any outside lights: Any home with its outdoor light on all day, every day, is wasteful in electricity.

• Avoid post build up – This is a potential giveaway, so make sure your post box is empty. Avoid any deliveries to be made to your home while you are away to be left outside.

• Ensure all your alarms

are set: Before leaving, lock all your doors and hide your valuables. Secure any outbuildings, garages or sheds, and keep any tools that could be used to break in out of sight.

Vehicle Preparation

• Apply a steering wheel lock: This method of protection against vehicle theft is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to avoid this crime. They offer an obvious deterrent to any thief and a locking system that prevents the turning of the wheel, which means if they do manage to get into your car to steal it, they won’t get far.

• GPS Tracker: A tracker is a great way to ensure you know your vehicle’s whereabouts at any time. They can connect to your smartphone, making it super accessible to view while you are sitting at the beach.

• Wheel clamp: Another visual deterrent that will prevent your car from going anywhere is a wheel clamp. It will also put off any chancing thief as it would take a long time for them to try and remove it, posing more risk of being seen or stopped by neighbours and passersby.

• Key signal blocker: One of the most common ways vehicles are stolen is by duplicating and cloning the signal from your key fob. To reduce this risk, you can purchase a key signal blocker lined with special isolation that prevents the frequency of your key from being duplicated, reducing the risk of your vehicle being stolen.

CEMETERY wORks COMplETE

Sheffield General Cemetery, one of Sheffield’s most fascinating locations, is celebrating the end of a four-year £3 million conservation and repair programme this month.

Thanks to funding from the National Lottery, the Council has carried out extensive structural repairs to the Cemetery’s famous catacombs, stabilised key monuments and provided support to the massive retaining walls which are now nearing 200 years old, ensuring the Cemetery can continue to be treasured and admired by future generations. The conclusion of the current project completes a further step on the journey to celebrate the General Cemetery’s significance as a heritage treasure – “Sheffield’s Highgate”whilst protecting its value as a tranquil green space and important wildlife habitat close to the city.

Cllr Richard Williams said “This is a really important milestone, building on the earlier restoration achievements of Sheffield General Cemetery Trust. The hard

work of the projects team, the volunteers and the contractors has really paid off. The General Cemetery is such a well-loved space, it is a delight to welcome people back to enjoy it and see the results for themselves. We will be marking the completion of the repair works with events and activities including the fascinating Celebrating Then and Now Exhibition at the Samuel Worth Chapel. Everyone is welcome to come and see what we’ve been up to and be part of the week, which runs from June Saturday 3rd to Sunday 11th June.”

The Full Monty's striking writers picket Sheffield premiere of Disney+ reboot

The cast of The Full Monty have returned to Sheffield to premiere a new Disney+ series that reunites the characters from the hit 1997 film. Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy and Lesley Sharp were at Monday's premiere in the city, where the film and show are set.

However, Full Monty creator Simon Beaufoy and series co-writer Alice Nutter did not go in because of the continuing US writers' strike. Instead, they picketed the event, carrying placards outside the cinema.

Beaufoy, who wrote the original Oscar-winning film, held a sign reading: "The Full Monty - about people, for people, by people. No AI." Nutter's message referred to the premiere. "We love this show but we can't go - fair deal for writers," it said.

The British pair are both in the Writers Guild of America, which has told members not to work for US companies during the industrial action, saying studios are underpaying writers in the streaming age.

In a statement before the premiere, Beaufoy and Nutter said: "We worked on The Full Monty TV series for over three years.

"We love this show, we put our hearts and souls into it and would like to be at the premiere - but as WGA writers, we won't be taking part in promotion until the strike is over.

"The ongoing strike and struggle to get a fair deal for writers is too important to us."

The eight-part series catches up with the Full

Monty's characters 26 years after the film, which saw a group of unemployed men turn to stripping.

In a three-star review, the Telegraph said the new version "firmly wears its politics on its sleeve - with mixed success".

"The issues will be all too recognisable, especially to those in neglected communities," the paper's critic Michael Hogan wrote.

"If the optimism of the original... has gone, that's the point - this is a sobering reminder of how far we haven't come."

The striptease "makes a half-hearted reprise" but is "no longer the narrative-driver", he said.

"For all the kitchen-sink bleakness, its community spirit still crackles with warmth, offering glimmers of hope," Hogan added.

new Pocket Park to bring MuSic to city centre

A new pocket park in Sheffield city centre pays homage to the city’s musical greats and will inspire the next generation to get on their dancing shoes. The new park, which is on Charter Square between the Light Cinema and Furnace restaurant, will encourage creativity with more than ten instruments for visitors to try which are inclusive for all ages. To inspire players, plaques commemorating Sheffield’s musical superstars will be added to the park in the future to share stories about musicians who developed their skills locally before becoming famous and giving visitors the opportunity to learn about the legends that gave the city its musical reputation. The park has been fitted out with special instruments designed to be used in the open

air. The eleven instruments include three xylophones, four drums, and four tubular bells. The idea for the park was developed by ChangingSheff and the project has been delivered by the City Council.

ChangingShef is a residents’ association which represents 27,000 city centre residents. The group hopes to create a musical community around the park and for the space to attract local residents and music loving visitors alike. In the longer term, the group hopes the park will be used for gigs and recitals. ChangingSheff is looking for musicians or fans to support the park by dedicating an instrument. It is hoped that some of the famous musical names from Sheffield will either dedicate an instrument or the fans will dedicate an instrument to their favourite

band or musician. The money raised will pay for the costs involved in promotion, tuition and community development of the park.

Councillor Ben Miskell, Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Committee, said:

“Sheffield has a rich and diverse musical history, with the city producing some of the world’s most successful rockstars. The new pocket park will give locals and tourists the opportunity to flex their musical muscles right in the middle of the city centre, encouraging visitors to the city. “Creating opportunities to rest and play are crucial to developing a city centre that is welcoming to all communities.

The third stage is to use these funds to teach people how to play the instruments to the point at which they can make good music to entertain an audience.

“We are grateful for the Council’s support in achieving this new feature for all to enjoy.

It is unusual in being capable of producing good music from a group of 11 musicians in the open air but these instruments have been tuned to concert pitch to ensure pitch-perfect performances.

“We need sponsors to dedicate each instrument to a band, a musician, their fans or someone relevant to their success, so we can use this income to teach people how to play and develop new uses for the pocket park. We hope that some of Sheffield’s famous musicians, who are listed in the park, might support this idea.

“Stage three will be an interesting challenge - to get an open-air music school operating that can produce new musicians to entertain the public in

lunchtime concerts and other forms of musical entertainment. This could kick-start the next generation of Sheffield stars. I urge anyone interested in this supporting this challenge to contact ChanginSheff.”

The musical pocket park opened on the same day as the dedication of Pound’s Park, a new city centre park on the corner of Wellington Street and Rockingham Street. Friends since they were neighbours in the sixties Dave Kelly & Bob Hall have had illustrious careers in the British Blues Scene and have won many awards for their artistry. Dave Kelly, singer, guitarist and songwriter, is a founder member of The Blues Band (which has recently celebrated its 40th anniversary). Dave cut his teeth in the backing bands of Howlin’ Wolf and John Lee Hooker, and has played with Buddy Guy, Son House & Muddy Waters. The Blues Band have released around twenty albums, and Dave has fifteen more either solo or with his own Dave Kelly Band Bob Hall, singer, pianist and songwriter, is a founder member of The Groundhogs and Savoy Brown. Bob has also accompanied Howlin’ Wolf and John Lee Hooker and a host of blues stars including Little Walter, Lightnin’ Slim and Homesick James. Bob has played on well over a hundred albums, including four solo piano albums and dozens more as band leader or co-leader. Down the years Dave and Bob have had a number of critically acclaimed joint projects, have played in each other’s bands and on each other’s records. With such a pedigree it seemed natural to get together a show to exploit their joint talents. Complimenting the duo is Hilary Blythe on bass, an emotive singer of classic blues and Bob’s partner off-stage. Hilary’s rock-solid bass has been part of the A-Team, accompanying Lil’ Jimmy Reed on his UK and international tours.

United’s pre-season preparations are beginning to take shape with three domestic friendlies now confirmed, in addition to a likely fixture against European opposition at Bramall Lane ahead of their Premier League campaign beginning in August. Prior to departing for a training camp in Europe, the Blades

will make the short trip to Derbyshire to face National League Chesterfield, who narrowly missed out on promotion to the EFL at Wembley recently. The trip to the Technique Stadium on Saturday 15th July will kick off at 3pm. Upon returning from overseas, United will then travel to the AESSEAL New York Stadium on Tuesday

25th July to face Matt Taylor’s Rotherham United, kick-off 7pm, with another away game at Derby County scheduled to take place four days later on Saturday 29th July, kick-off 3pm.

The pre-season schedule also includes a number of in-house and behind closed doors fixtures as the players build up their match minutes ahead

of the top-flight action commencing over the weekend of Saturday 12th August. All ticketing and streaming details for the aforementioned domestic matches will be announced in due course. Additionally, friendly fixtures involving United’s development and women’s teams will be announced at a later date.

Rotherham United players and staff will join with supporters and sponsors this summer when the club hosts it’s annual Golf Day at Wath Golf Club on Wednesday 5th July 2023. The commercial team have already been inundated with interest for this highly sought after event and are currently taking bookings for teams to join Millers first team players and staff on the course in just over a months’ time.

As always, the day is accompanied by a two course meal and awards ceremony which will take place in the clubhouse courtesy of our hosts at Wath Golf Club.

Teams competing on the day will go up against opposition from Matt Taylor’s playing squad – with the individuals still to be confirmed – and club Chairman Tony Stewart, who is also a keen golfer.

The Owls are pleased to announce a preseason friendly ahead of the 2023/24 campaign against Chesterfield.

Darren Moore’s men will take the short hop to Derbyshire in a testimonial fixture for Drew Talbot, who played for both clubs. Talbot, of course, went down in Wednesday history in 2005 as the striker netted our final goal in the 4-2 League One play-off final win against Hartlepool at the Millennium Stadium. The testimonial will take place at the Technique Stadium on Tuesday 11 July, with a 7:00pm kick-off.

Tickets for the game are priced £10 for adults and £5 concessions.

2023 marks 50 years since Yorkshire CCC’s last competitive game at Bramall Lane and UTBUnited’s official matchday programme - will be marking the milestone.

The Roses clash between Yorkshire and Lancashire between the 4th and 7th August 1973 saw the end of Bramall Lane as a cricket venue for the White Rose, with the South Stand eventually constructed over the old wicket. In next season’s programme, the Blades are planning a regular feature to chart Yorkshire’s history at Bramall Lane, whilst they are also asking for supporters who attended cricket matches here to send in pictures and write some personal memories of following cricket in S2. Whether it is a memory of a particular game, a photograph (like this one sent to the club by fan John Lister) or some Bramall Lane cricket memorabilia - United want to hear from you. George Broadbent is convinced Rovers is the club where he can make big strides in his young career. The midfielder has signed a two-year deal at the EcoPower Stadium after switching from South Yorkshire neighbours Sheffield United for an undisclosed fee.

And he said boss Grant McCann had sold him on the project he is

putting together at the club, as well as how he can be developed as a player.

“I’m really looking forward working with the manager,” the 22year-old said. “He has a past history of helping young players develop and become a success.

“The manager was really positive from our first phonecall. He explained the project and how he sees

working with me and what he can do to help me.

“He’s seen me play and he was really positive on where he sees me playing as well as the club hitting targets for the season coming up.”

The former Manchester United youngster will add energy to Rovers’ midfield ranks. He said: “I’m a boxto-box midfielder who likes to get up and

down, attacking and defending. I contribute goals and assists and I see myself arriving late in the box to score goals.

“I’ll give 100 per cent effort in every game and leave everything on the pitch. I’m a real team member that’s willing to learn and adapt to different roles, whether that’s in a defensive position or an attacking position.”
