Arctic

Arctic Monkeys’ two huge hometown gigs brought an estimated £4.1million economic benefit to the city, new figures from Sheffield City Council reveal.

The gigs saw 74,000 people visit Hillsborough Park for two nights of shows from the band, who are originally from High Green and became Sheffield music royalty after releasing five hugely successful albums. Money spent on hotels, food and drink, and transport contributed to a boost for Hillsborough and Sheffield as people travelled from across the world to visit the city for the gigs.

Councillor Martin Smith, Economic Development and Skills Committee Chair, said:

gigs see £4.1 Million boost to tHe city

“It was fantastic to welcome Arctic Monkeys home for two gigs at Hillsborough Park earlier in June. With 74,000 fans attending, some on foot from neighbouring streets and others who had flown across the world to visit our city for the shows, it was a brilliant weekend.

“The boost for local businesses is huge, with an estimated £4.1 million pumped into the city over the weekend. Businesses in Hillsborough, particularly food and drink venues, benefitted from fans enjoying the day and in the city centre, and we saw an uplift in hotel bookings and footfall during the weekend.

These events go to show how beneficial large-scale shows can be for Sheffield,

bringing both entertainment and economic benefits to the city. It was brilliant to have the band back in the city and we’re looking forward to Tramlines at Hillsborough Park next month.”

The gigs kick off a summer of events, with Tramlines returning to the park from 21 – 23 July. To reduce the impact on Hillsborough Park, the council has been carrying out maintenance before the Arctic Monkeys shows, including investing in a new path network. During the weekend there was minimal damage to the park which has been returned to its original condition, with repairs paid for by SJM Concerts. The council is continuing to look

after the park, ensuring it is in good condition ready for Tramlines later in July. After the festival, the council will again work with Tramlines to ensure the park is once again returned to its best condition for local residents and visitors from across the city to enjoy.

Councillor Smith said:

“Thanks to hard work and preparation from the council team, Hillsborough Park only needed some minor repairs after the shows. Thank you to locals for their patience as we return the park to normal and to the teams on the ground making sure Hillsborough Park is looking its best again after the event.”

Janine Lawson from

the Hillsborough Tap and the business group

Hillsborough Together, said:

“The recent concerts in the park were a great boost for us at Hillsborough Tap during what is historically a quiet period in the Hillsborough area. It’s great to see so many new visitors to the area and it allows us to showcase what an amazing area Hillsborough is. The feedback we received from visitors was fantastic and it was great that so many people loved our little business as much as we do! We hope that this will create repeat business for us in a time that is very difficult for independent businesses like ours.”

Kaleb cooper chipping

Norton’s finest celebrity farmer and sunday Times’ best-selling author will be leaving the familiarity of his beloved chipping Norton and heading out on the road for his first ever theatre tour in January 2024 with – The World according to Kaleb – Kaleb Goes on Tour arrives at Sheffield City Hall on 20 February 2024.

Kaleb, who shot to fame in the Prime Video series Clarkson’s Farm, made headline news recently with an initial announcement on his social media channels that he would be appearing at Nottingham Royal Concert Hall on 22 February 2024. Following a huge response, Kaleb has decided to conquer his fear of the unknown, and

confirms, in association with NLP Ltd, that the 34-date tour will kick off with three shows, not too far from home, at Cheltenham’s Everyman Theatre on 25-27 January and continue through March 2024.

Kaleb Cooper said: “I’m so excited to be hitting the road and going on a real live theatre tour. I’m lucky to do what I love and am still busy farming and working hard. But I always say you never stop learning. So I’m ready to push myself – literally – outside Chippy and put on a show that’s full of fun and farming. I can’t wait to get stuck in, share some of what I’ve learnt in life so far, and most importantly, have a laugh with you all. Hope to see you there!”

Kaleb has captured the hearts of viewers around the world with his oftenfrustrating quest to teach Jeremy Clarkson a thing or two about farming, as well as his amusing comments on life, the universe and everything in between.

First and foremost a farmer, Kaleb is now learning something new himself and will be treating audiences to a rip-roaring riot of a show.

Fans can expect Kaleb’s strong views on many things – including sheep (‘stupid’), Jeremy Clarkson (f***ing idiot’), goats (‘they’re a proper good clear-up animal – they eat everything – no wonder they taste horrible’), New York (‘if it’s like London where there are no tractors, that’s no good’), famous

people, why farming is the best job in the world and, crucially, personal style, such as hair - especially his own! Despite his surprise status as a household name, Kaleb is still the same down to earth, hardworking farmer, with his feet firmly on the ground.

He will give audiences the chance to participate in some rather interesting rural pastimes during the show, as well as highlighting some of the many challenges that British farmers face today and perhaps share how we can all help to make a

difference and support them. With often-unwitting humour, deadpan delivery and unique observations, Kaleb is venturing to a town near you, to tell it like he sees it! Tickets are available now via www.sheffieldcityhall. co.uk

TEaCHING abOUT MONEY

Less than half of children in Yorkshire and the Humber have been taught about money at home or in school, according to a new report from the Money and Pensions Service (MaPS). Financial Foundations, based on a survey of 342 of the region’s children aged 7-17, found that just 43% had received a meaningful financial education in either or both settings. MaPS is now estimating that over 480,000 children in Yorkshire and the Humber don’t have the money skills they’ll need in adulthood and it’s calling on parents, schools, financial institutions and funders to help. The poll asked if they remembered getting a financial education at school that they considered useful, with 21% saying they had. They were also asked if they received regular money from either parents or work, if their parents set rules on it and whether they were given responsibility for spending decisions, with 13% saying yes to all three. A further 9% said both the above scenarios applied to them. The report shows that learning about money helps children to feel more confident managing and talking about money, save more regularly and have a bank account that they use. As part of its UK Strategy for Financial Wellbeing, released in 2020, MaPS is aiming for two million more UK children aged 5-17 to receive a meaningful financial education by 2030. To reach that target, it’s asking all parents to talk to their children about money and combine it with everyday experiences, such as food shopping, budgeting and wages from a part-time job. To help with this, MaPS offers free

CALL

resources like Talk Learn

Do, an online tool that helps parents to start the conversation. MaPS also says that teachers, school leaders and governors should work together to deliver financial education in the classroom. It’s already investing £1.1 million in support for teachers and practitioners working with vulnerable children across the UK. In addition, MaPS is calling on financial services and funders, like grant-makers and charitable trusts, to increase their investment in the delivery of financial education. It says this will help reach even more children, particularly those in vulnerable circumstances.

Jenny Wright, Regional Manager at the Money and Pensions Service, said: “These figures will alarm everyone in financial education because almost half a million children across Yorkshire and the Humber could be going without.

Our experiences in childhood prepare us for adulthood and learning about money is no different. It becomes a part of daily life and our financial decisions can bring real benefits and profound consequences, so it’s crucial to learn from a young age. The race is on to educate the region’s children and everyone from banks and building societies to foundations and financial institutions has a big part to play.

Parents and schools can also make a huge difference by combining money skills with everyday experiences, both inside and outside the classroom. The target is two million more children across the UK to receive a meaningful financial education by 2030. If we work together, we can achieve it.”

pRIMaRY CHIldCaRE

The Department for Education (DfE) has announced that Sheffield City Council will be one of 16 local authorities that will help to design a process to expand wraparound childcare for primary schools. Wraparound care includes breakfast clubs, after school clubs and other school services that can help care for children outside of normal school hours from 8am to 6pm.

Announced in the Budget, the government will give local authorities in England £289 million over two academic years, starting in September 2024. This will support local authorities to work with schools, trusts and other providers to set up and scale up wraparound childcare provision. Wraparound care includes breakfast clubs, after school clubs and other school services that can help care for children outside of normal school hours from 8am to 6pm. This DfE’s national programme will also allow local authorities to test flexible ways of providing childcare and gather evidence of what works. As one of 16 local authorities chosen to help develop the process for this, Sheffield will be able to help shape the plans so that our families and schools will benefit from this new initiative.

With the other Councils involved, this co-design group of local authorities will help DfE understand what help they need to provide before the national roll out of the wraparound programme and help them to understand the potential delivery challenges.

Councillor Maroof Raouf said: “This is such good news for working families in the city who will be supported to be able to work knowing that more funded childcare will be available. Families in the UK should always have access to this provision and certainly now, at a time when living costs are rising. I’m delighted that Sheffield will play a crucial role in the design of the

NHs Call fOR vOlUNTEERs

new process. We will be very keen to make sure that the way that this care is provided will truly help to unlock employment opportunities for parents by removing barriers to work. The real needs of families must be met in the right way. There are already some schools and providers delivering excellent before and after school care in the city and the council will work hard to increase the supply of wraparound care in Sheffield so that this is available for all families, tackling the barriers to work currently experienced by many people in the city.” More information about childcare entitlements now or the coming changes is at: www. childcarechoices.gov.uk/

What funded childcare will look like:

• 15 hours of funded childcare for working parents of 2 year oldsApril 2024

• 15 hours of funded childcare for working parents of 9 months to 3 year olds – September 2024

• 30 hours funded childcare for working parents of children from age 9 months until they start school - September 2025

• Changes to universal credit childcare payments

• The ambition that all parents of primary school aged children will be able to access full wraparound care between 8am and 6pm in their local area by September 2026

• Increased funding rates for childcare providers and financial incentives for new childminders

As the NHS turns 75, Royal Voluntary Service is calling 25,000 more people to step forward and support the health service now, and as we move towards next winter, by volunteering in hospitals and in the community.

The charity is currently recruiting volunteers for a range of rewarding roles in hospital settings and in the community, to meet the needs of those most vulnerable.

Royal Voluntary Service also delivers the NHS and Care Volunteers Responders programme with GoodSAM, which provides short-term support to people in need. Newcomers to volunteering are welcome to apply for the many flexible opportunities available. In addition, volunteers are needed at the charity’s shops, cafes, and trolley services to offer refreshments and companionship to patients, hospital staff, and visitors. In total, 25,000 new volunteers are needed to bolster existing efforts and to be on standby ready for the anticipated demand in winter.

Since the NHS’s inception on the 5th of July 1948, Royal Voluntary Service, one of the largest volunteering organisations in Britain has been providing vital, responsive services that support the NHS. Elaine Paige, Royal Voluntary Service Ambassador, said: “Through my experience as an ambassador I’ve had the joy of volunteering with Royal Voluntary Service’s hospital trollies. I witnessed the tremendous impact that a volunteer’s friendly presence

can have on patients. By simply offering a listening ear, volunteers provide patients with a sense of comfort and companionship during their hospital stay, which can often be a difficult time. If you can, please sign up to volunteer and make a difference in your community.” Catherine Johnstone CBE, Chief Executive : “As we mark 75 years of the NHS, we want to thank all the extraordinary volunteers who have supported the NHS since it began. Many of them have volunteered with Royal Voluntary Service and they have made a huge difference. And what better way to celebrate the NHS’s 75th Birthday than by becoming part of its incredible volunteer team. Volunteering is a wonderful two-way experience that brings so much joy.”

Since the very beginning, Royal Voluntary Service volunteers have worked alongside the NHS, from the Second World War to the pandemic, and into the present. 75 years on, the charity’s volunteers can be found in communities and at NHS sites across the UK. There are so many ways to get involved and support the NHS, volunteering with Royal Voluntary Service and Volunteer Responders allows volunteers to choose the role and style of volunteering that fits in with their life and lifestyle. Yorkshire Water remains committed to helping customers through financial support and is reminding customers of the help available.

Extending the financial support available follows

Yorkshire Water’s 2022 announcement to provide an additional £15m funding to support customers struggling to pay their water bills.

The utility is expecting to help more than 125,000 households with additional support with their bills in the current financial year, providing financial support of over £26million, and urging customers who may be eligible to contact Yorkshire Water if they are struggling in the current cost of living crisis. There are a number of schemes available, which can see annual charges capped for low income customers or debt reduction support for customers who are in arrears with their bill. Customers with a household income of less than £18,000 and a bill of more than £350 per year are likely to be able to apply for a bill reduction.

In 2022, Yorkshire Water provided more than 50,000 customers on their WaterSure and WaterSupport tariffs with a cost-of-living payment of up to £71 to help with their water bills. These tariffs support low-income households, and/or those

with a medical need for water use, by capping the annual charges regardless of the water required.

Angie Markham–Nock at Yorkshire Water, said:

“As a utility provider, we are doing what we can to keep our commitment to support our customers during these financially difficult times. Across all our support schemes in 2022-23, over 90,000 customers have been provided financial support and we are expecting this to increase this year. Thanks to the support we’re offering, some households will not have seen an increase in their water bill this year, and we want to help take the pressure off where we can and point you in the right direction for support if you’re eligible for it. We can provide advice about water efficiency and water meters to reduce customer bills, support with access to social tariffs for low-income customers or provide debt schemes to help make bills more affordable to customers struggling with arrears. We’re is also here to help provide payment breaks, tailored payment arrangements and has signposted external debt and benefit support to thousands of customers across the region. Please don’t be afraid to pick up the phone and speak to us. We know financial stresses are a huge concern for many.”

Kick-off approaches for a re-vamped football hub in Sheffield

The refurbishment of the Woodbourn Road football site in Darnall has started as part of a project led by the Premier League, The Football Association and Government’s Football Foundation in partnership with Sheffield City Council.

The £2.8 million scheme will see the installation of seven LED floodlit small-sided football turf pitches - six 5 v 5 and one 7 v 7 pitch. In addition, the existing two-storey pavilion will undergo major refurbishment to provide a new reception, café, meeting space, multi faith room and changing facilities. The pavilion will also provide much-needed ancillary facilities for the athletics community that use Sheffield Hallam University’s 400m track on the site. This well-loved community facility will provide playing opportunities for people of all ages. Activity will range from turn up and play sessions, activities for young people by local youth organisation, Darnall Education and Sports Academy (DESA) and Sheffield United Community Foundation (SUCF) which will run Premier League Kicks sessions. Activity will also include coaching by local clubs Aden Steelers, Darnall FA, Darnall Diamonds, and Sheffield City.

Activities at the football hub

The site will host a new weekly coaching programme for disabled young people by SUCF and a new Pan-disability league in partnership with Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA will become a regular fixture providing competitive football for players aged 16 years and over. Once completed, Woodbourn Road will be run alongside Sheffield’s three existing football hub sites at Graves, Thorncliffe and Westfield.

Robert Sullivan, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “The news that the council have approved plans for this site will provide a

boost for grassroots sport in South Yorkshire.

“Funding from the Premier League, The FA, Sheffield City Council, and the Government, through Sport England, has played a vital role in making this project a reality. Thanks to their investment facilities like this will have a transformative impact on people’s physical and mental health, bringing them together and benefitting local economies. It’s essential communities up and down the country have great places to play.”

Councillor Richard Williams, Chair of the Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is a fantastic scheme that will benefit so many. We know how important football is to the community, it allows people to have fun, keep fit and importantly, it’s low-cost to play.

“We’re so grateful for this investment, the funding will go a long way for the community, allowing people to play football in top quality facilities alongside an exciting programme of sessions run by experienced organisations.”

Richard North, Sports Operations Manager at Sheffield Hallam University, said: “This investment will be welcomed by the full athletic community who will benefit from the improved changing rooms, showering facilities, toilets, and the additional social hub. These new facilities are anticipated to enhance the local Sheffield Hallam student, athlete, coach, and spectator experience who regularly use the track and for visitors to the facility during local and regional athletic competitions.”

Abdul Malik, from Darnall Education and Sports Academy (DESA) explained, “The new facility will give DESA access to top-notch facilities and resources. Together, we aspire to build a vibrant and inclusive footballing community that fosters personal growth, skill development,

and a sense of belonging for individuals from all backgrounds. This project represents a significant milestone in our ongoing mission to promote physical well-being and inspire our local community."

About the Football Foundation

• The Football Foundation is the Premier League, The FA and Government’s charity that delivers outstanding grassroots facilities, more and better places to play, transforming lives and communities where it is needed most.

• The Foundation’s goal is to unlock the power of pitches ensuring everyone has a great place to play regardless of gender, race, disability, or place.

• Since its creation in 2000, the Foundation has awarded more than 23,000 grants to improve

facilities worth more than £877 million –including 1,000 3G football turf pitches, 11,000 natural grass pitches and 1,300 changing rooms. This has attracted an additional £1.23bn of partnership funding – totalling over £2 billion investment in grassroots football so far. In partnership with local authorities, County FAs and other community stakeholders, the Foundation has created Local Football Facility Plans for every local authority in England. These Plans act as a blueprint for providing the grassroots football facility improvements that each community needs and deserves across the country.

CAMRA’s Good BeeR Guide enlists the help of A MusiC iCon

The Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) Good Beer Guide – the UK’s best-selling beer and pub guide – is celebrating its 51st edition with a striking cover and a

foreword supplied by Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson. The Guide, which surveys 4,500 of the best pubs across the UK, is the definitive beer drinker’s guide for those seeking the best pints in the nation’s pubs.

Dickinson’s foreword shines a spotlight on the cultural tradition of pubs within the United Kingdom, the importance of protecting the heritage, charm and welcoming nature of pubs and clubs, and not taking them for granted.

Pubs and clubs are a rite of passage for many bands and musicians starting out in the UK, and Iron Maiden themselves began their career almost 50 years ago playing in London pubs. The conviviality of these venues creates the perfect atmosphere for burgeoning music scenes, and helps to drive footfall into pubs, especially after a challenging period for them brought on by the pandemic.

The cover of The Good Beer Guide 2024 features Eddie, Iron Maiden’s mascot and icon of the band’s range of Trooper

beers, brewed by Stockport brewery Robinsons. Trooper celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and has become one of the UK’s most established ales in that period.

CAMRA National Chairman Nik Antona said: “We’re honoured to have Bruce Dickinson pen the foreword for The Good Beer Guide 2024. As we enter our second half century of producing the Guide, there is no one better to introduce this year’s edition, and highlight what makes these institutions so worth visiting.

“The last few years have been an incredibly difficult time for the industry, and we need more support than ever before to keep our nation’s pubs open and thriving. I’d encourage everyone to use this year’s Guide to visit the very best pubs across the UK and support them for generations to come.”

The Good Beer Guide 2024 is set to be published on 28 September, with options to order the standard editions, alternative cover and hardback editions available on the CAMRA shop. To pre-order, go to https://shop1. camra.org.uk/

Windass nets in opener

Wednesday eased into pre-season action with a 1-1 draw at National League side York.

The friendly marked the beginning of the Xisco Muñoz era as the new Wednesday manager effectively fielded two separate teams either side of half time.

The Owls dominated the first half, stroking the ball confidently around the plush LNER Community

Stadium pitch.

Dominic Iorfa went close with a towering header and Lee Gregory forced a fine save from Ryan Whitley after breaking free down the left of the area.

Wednesday were not to be denied and broke through on 26 minutes.

Adam Crookes’ backpass was underhit and misdirected, allowing Josh Windass to nip in

and round Whitley to score.

The hosts were limited to just one chance before the break when Lenell John-Lewis was inches off target from just outside the box.

The Owls made eight changes for the start of the second period and a further three on the hour.

Cameron Dawson stayed between the sticks for the restart before making

way for Pierce Charles and in-between made a smart save to keep out Scott Burgess’ set piece. The Minstermen posed more of a threat in the second half and got their reward on 59 minutes. A swift counter down the left saw Maz Kouhyar’s low cross converted at the far post by Finlay Barnes to give York an overall deserved share of the spoils.

miLLers CaptUre CaFU siGnatUre

Rotherham United are delighted to confirm the capture of midfielder Cafu, who arrives at AESSEAL New York Stadium on a one year deal, following the expiration of his contract at Premier League side Nottingham Forest. The move is subject to ratification from the FA and EFL.

The defensive midfielder arrives in South Yorkshire as Matt Taylor’s third summer signing, as the Millers continue to strengthen ahead of the upcoming 2023/24 Sky Bet Championship campaign.

Cafu began his career

in his native Portugal, coming through the ranks at Benfica before going on to sign for Vitoria Guimaraes where he got his first taste of continental football, in the shape of the UEFA Europa League. The 30-year-old then moved across Europe to France, enjoying spells with Lorient and Metz between 2016 and 2019. His next challenge would be with Legia Warsaw, in which he helped them win the Polish League title in 2017/18, before scoring the winning goal in the Polish Cup Final against Arka Gdynia. More silverware would

soon follow when he joined Olympiacos in February 2020, helping the Greek side to league title success, as well as getting his hands on the Greek Cup. With 13 appearances in the Europa League and Champions League to his name, as well as 27 caps for Portugal at various youth levels, Cafu first arrived on English shores in 2020/21, when he joined Nottingham Forest.

Initially signing on loan before making the switch permanent, he helped the Reds win promotion to the Premier League for the first time in over two decades during the 2021/22 campaign, before going on to appear in the Premier League. Everyone at Rotherham United would like to welcome Cafu to the football club and wish him all the best during his time at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

mcCann praises quality against rossington

Grant McCann hailed three pieces of quality play that brought Rovers’ goals in the 3-1 friendly triumph at Rossington Main. Goals from Tommy Rowe, George Broadbent and George Miller saw Rovers to the victory at Oxford Street. McCann said: “Jack Senior’s ball in and Rowey’s header. A good

oWLs to host LUton

Sheffield Wednesday will host Luton Town in a pre-season friendly this month.

The game will take place at Hillsborough on Saturday 29 July, with a 3:00pm kick-off.

It will be the Owls’ final pre-season fixture ahead of our 2023/24 Championship campaign, which begins at home to Southampton on Friday

4 August. The meeting with Premier League new boys Luton is our fifth confirmed friendly of the summer.

Tickets (on sale now) for the Hatters clash are priced as follows:

bit of play in the build-up to George Broadbent’s goal and really good play from young Tavonga Kuleya to slip George Miller in.

“Some good quality finishes but the main thing for us was to come through unscathed and to get 45 minutes into most of the squad as possible.

“There’s a lot of work to do in terms of how we want to play, different ways of playing against different formations. All in all it was a good day with no injuries and we’ve come through the game.

“I said to the boy before the game that it was 45 minutes work and to put as much as they could

George Dickinson, Charlie Staniland, Ben Drake and Luke Faxon have all put pen-to-paper on contracts with the club after completing their scholarships. They join Owen Hampson and Sai Sachdev who signed long-term deals with the club last month.

Marshall Francis, who also joined the club towards the end of last season as a second-year scholar, has also signed a professional deal ahead of the new campaign.

All four of Faxon, Drake,

The first Premier League away game of the 2023/24 season, against Nottingham Forest, has been moved from its Saturday slot and will now take place on Friday 18th August, kick-off 7.45pm. The match at the City Ground has been moved on the agreement of both clubs and the Premier League and will not be televised.

into it because it’d benefit them for the next one.

“The next one is coming up in a few days so we look forward for that.”

The Rovers boss has prioritised fitness in the early stages of pre-season and was happy following the 3-1 win at Oxford Street.

“It was a good exercise for us,” he said. “Fitness into the legs, 45 minutes into most of the squad.

“Some good goals, which is pleasing. It was nice to see Rowey back among the goals - I’ve seen him do that so many times, arriving across the front post.

“A good goal from George Broadbent and a really good goal from

Dickinson and Staniland have already had a regular taste of under 21s football under head coach Mickey Collins and enjoyed a successful two years with the clubs’ under 18s, winning both the northern and national titles last season.

They were all again a part of the team which finished second at the end of the current season and will now step up permanently to the under 21s set up ahead of the new season in August.

Under 21s head

The home game against Manchester City at Bramall Lane, originally scheduled for 26th August, will now take place on Sunday 27th August, kick-off 2pm, and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

The clash with Everton at Bramall Lane will still take place on Saturday 2nd September but will now kick-off at the earlier

George Miller as well. All in all it’s been a good day.

“After the first 15 or 20 minutes we got to grips with the game better in terms of what we wanted to do. We’ve probably had two or three days tactical work with the lads, and probably not even that, so we’ve still got a lot of work to do.

“But the boys showed really good fitness and I’m pleased with that.

“It’s great to see the fans. When we came off I heard them say it was 2,000 fans which is unbelievable and great for Rossington as well as the players to see so many of our fans.”

coach, Michael Collins, commented: “These lads showed they have the potential to progress with their under 18 performances and now it’s about laying their markers down consistently with the under 21’s.

“Those who have gone before them have shown what can happen with hard work and dedication.

It’s on them now to create the opportunities and more importantly, take them.”
