CALLS FOR LATE NIGHT LEVY TO BE SCRAPPED

Home Office Late Night Levy changes step in right direction, but unfair scheme should still be scrapped says CAMRA.

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) is calling for the controversial Late Night Levy scheme to be axed to help support pubs, despite changes announced by the Home Office last week.

Campaign group CAMRA, which represents more than 152,000 pub goers and beer drinkers, is calling on government ministers to axe the

controversial Late Night Levy scheme which sees extra costs charged by some councils in England and Wales on pubs and hospitality businesses.

The Home Office has announced that from 13 July 2023 the law around Late Night Levies – which are designed to raise money towards policing the late-night economy – will be changed slightly so that they can apply only to specific geographic areas rather than a whole council area as at present.

Local authorities will

also be able to apply the levy to businesses offering late night refreshment like cafés and takeaway, as well as to those serving alcohol.

Commenting, CAMRA Chairman Nik Antona said:

“These changes to the controversial Late Night Levy scheme are a step in the right direction, allowing councils to make sure they can apply to a smaller area like a city centre rather than penalising business across the whole council area.

“However, CAMRA

is still calling on the Government to abolish the unfair Late Night Levy scheme completely due to its detrimental impact on well run and responsible pubs, social clubs and taprooms which are at the heart of communities and bring people together to tackle loneliness and social isolation.

“It is for these very reasons that the Government is changing the alcohol duty system in August to support and encourage people to consume beer and cider in the regulated setting

of the pub. It makes no sense to support pubs through the tax system but penalise them through the unfair Late Night Levy. The best way to tackle the problems of safety in the night-time economy is for councillors, the police and hospitality business to work closely together to tackle local issues –not through a punitive and blunt measure like the Late Night Levy that applies to businesses even if they don’t open late into the night or aren’t a source of antisocial behaviour.”

Owls join forces with Tickets for Troops

Sheffield Wednesday are delighted to once again join forces with Ticket for Troops for the 2023/24 Championship season. The military charity, which provides free tickets for sporting, musical and theatrical events to members of the Armed Forces, has enjoyed a longstanding partnership with the Owls and The Football League since the scheme was established in 2009, seeing thousands of personnel visit Hillsborough over the years. Over 300,000 football tickets have been donated to the charity and last season alone saw in excess of 25,500 distributed to servicemen and women across the UK.

Sheffield Wednesday General

Manager Alastair Wilson said:

“It’s been a pleasure to back the scheme for all these years and I am delighted that for the upcoming season hundreds of servicemen and women will be able to take in the Hillsborough atmosphere once again.

“These people risk their lives each and every day and it’s a fantastic way of saying thank you for their continued service.

“As well as the Tickets for Troops scheme we also offer a concessionary based Season Ticket as well as Membership packages, giving discounts for home matches.”

Tickets for Troops Director of Operations Evie Blades added:

“Every Monday during the foot-

ball season the TFT team come to work and find an in-box full of photos from the weekend. Some of our favourites are seeing our members taking their children to their first matches.

“It's wonderful to be a part of those special memories and we can't do it without our incredible partners. Sheffield Wednesday have partnered with us for over a decade now, thank you so much from us and all our troops who share a day out at Hillsborough with their loved ones.”

Members of the Armed Forces and those who have been medically discharged from the services since 2001 can book tickets via the charity’s website at www. ticketsfortroops.org.uk

Communities in Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley are set to benefit from thousands of new jobs and Ј1.2 billion of investment as part of the UK’s first Advanced Manufacturing Investment Zone.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has hailed the first Advanced Manufacturing Investment Zone in South Yorkshire for bringing opportunity into areas which have traditionally underperformed economically. Growing the economy, and creating opportunities across the UK, is a priority for the Prime Minister. Twelve Investment Zones will be established across the UK based around a university and clusters of high growth industries like Advanced Manufacturing, life sciences or green industries, will deliver benefits directly to local communities. Building on the area’s strengths, the South Yorkshire Investment Zone is focused on Advanced Manufacturing and includes the University of Sheffield. It’s expected that the Investment Zone will help leverage more than £1.2bn of private funding and help support more than 8,000 jobs by 2030.

People from Sheffield Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley will see blockers to growth in their area, such as challenges attracting finance and investment, supporting business growth, and clear pathways to higher skilled jobs reduced. They will also benefit from further government funding through the Investment Zone worth up to £80 million. This could be through potential support for specialist training programmes tailored to industry and support for local businesses in the sector’s supply chains,

helping drive more business activity and productivity. Chancellor of the Exchequer

Jeremy Hunt: “Our first Investment Zone is a shining example of how we will drive growth across the country. It’s already secured more than £80 million of private investment, including backing from Boeing, and will help support more than 8,000 jobs by 2030.” Government will continue to work with South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University and other local partners to co-develop the plans for their Advanced Manufacturing Investment Zone, including agreeing priority development sites and specific interventions to drive cluster growth, over the summer ahead of final confirmation of plans. Today’s announcement of an investment of more then Ј80 million for a portfolio of Research & Development projects, backed by Boeing, will look at the future of aerospace. Boeing will work with industry partners, Spirit AeroSystems and Loop Technology at the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) Factory 2050 in Sheffield Business Park. The project, co-funded by industry and government, including through the Aerospace Technology Institute programme, and with support from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and the University of Sheffield, puts the UK at the cutting edge of aviation research, development and manufacturing as demand for commercial aircraft is forecasted to be greater than 40,000 over the next 20 years.

As city centre cycle racing returns for the 2023 Sheffield Grand Prix, South Yorkshire’s Active Travel Commissioner, Ed Clancy OBE, has announced the procircuit will be open to the public to ‘Rock Up & Ride’ ahead of the race.

Everyone is invited to cycle, scoot or wheel in a community ride, with the triple Olympic Gold medallist, at 5-5.30pm on Wednesday 19 July.

Starting at Union Street, the Rock Up & Ride event covers the same 1.4km route as the Sheffield Grand Prix pro-circuit. Riders are invited to cycle, scoot or wheel the course as many – or as few – times as they wish, and at their own pace.

South Yorkshire’s Active Travel Commissioner, Ed Clancy, said: “I’ve loved cycling since I was a kid, I was hooked straightaway. It’s fast, fun and gave me freedom. I’ve got such happy memories of riding around with my friends and I want other people to discover that for themselves. We’ve organised Rock Up & Ride to give everyone the chance to give pedal power a go, traffic free -to see the circuit from the saddle and take in the outdoor city. Because you don’t have to have made a career out of cycling to get involved in active travel. It really can be for everyone, regardless of age or ability. And I truly believe that enabling people to choose walking, scooting and cycling is central to building a better connected, healthier and more sustainable South Yorkshire.”

Rock Up & Ride is made possible by event partners, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Grand Prix, British Cycling and Giant Sheffield. It’s hoped the event will inspire more people to get active and

consider choosing cycling, scooting or wheeling for shorter journeys.

Councillor Ben Miskell, Chair of Sheffield City Council’s Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee, said:

“The Sheffield Grand Prix is a fantastic opportunity for cyclists of all ages and abilities to have a go on the same race circuit as the pro athletes. I’ll even be having a go myself! Events like this are vital to making active travel accessible to all and to help more people realise the fun and freedom that comes with cycling. The traffic-free route is a great way to see our ever evolving city centre from a new angle and give cycling a try on the same routes as some of the country’s best athletes.”

To ride, participants should register their details at the Giant Sheffield gazebo, outside the Town Hall on race day from 4:30pm. The Rock Up & Ride circuit will be open to the public from 5-5:30pm. All participants under 18 years of age must wear a helmet.

Youngsters must be accompanied by an adult. A limited number of free hire bikes and helmets will be available from the Giant Sheffield gazebo for riders without their own two wheels - photo ID and a bank card is required for hire.

Sheffield Grand Prix, now in its 9th year, is part of the British Cycling National Circuit Race Series, attracting the UK’s top teams and riders.

FoodCycle, the charity that aims to make food poverty, loneliness and food waste a thing of the past for every community, is in urgent need of volunteers as it fights to fill almost 4,000 empty volunteer slots this summer.

FoodCycle Head of Programmes, Sophie Tebbetts says: ”Every summer we see a decline in volunteer sign-ups due to many reasons - from students returning home to parents having less time during the holidays. This year, 3,947 volunteer slots need to be filled between now and September –made more urgent by the cost-of-living crisis which has helped to see a 59% increase in our guest numbers in the last 12 months. By dedicating just a few hours of your time to volunteer with us, you can help a family get access to a cooked, nutritious meal. Please join us at your local project this summer and help us break the cycle of hunger. Once you witness the immense difference it makes in people’s lives, you won’t regret it!” From April 2022 and April 2023, FoodCycle’s guest numbers of across the UK have surged by 59%. The charity which serves up free community meals every week using surplus food currently has 73 Projects across England and Wales. So far in 2023, they have served nearly 60,000 community meals and saved 112,921 kilograms / 112 tonnes of perfectly good food that would otherwise have been binned . Volunteer roles at FoodCycle are flexible, are open to anyone and do not have a minimum time commitment. Roles

are equally inclusive and range from food collection to surplus food coordinators to cooking in the kitchen or hosting our front. Training is provided and volunteers are invited to carve out their own niche from master chef to tea-maker to washer-up to veg chopper. Those that love to lead, can even train to be a Project Leader and gain key transferrable management skills running Projects. Paul, FoodCycle Volunteer says; “Because of FoodCycle, I’ve found I enjoy cooking and being in the kitchen environment and it’s something I’d love to do as proper paid work. Being at FoodCycle every week helps to show that I am reliable, can work with other people and that I am committed, so it’s really changed things for me. We have a natter and a laugh, and I like the teamwork and the people. We eat good food and catch up on what we’ve been doing in the week. Everyone is very kind and very inclusive.”

FoodCycle’s free community meals are open to all, and guests range from low-income families, people affected by homelessness, single people facing loneliness and those who simply cannot afford to buy food. No questions asked, you can just turn up and take a seat. Without volunteers, FoodCycle cannot provide a vital service to the community who have come to rely on the chance to sit down to a free, three-course meal every week. Latest annual figures published by NHS Blood and Transplant show that last year there was a 5% increase in the number of patients whose lives were saved or improved through an organ transplant in the UK.

The annual Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Activity Report shows that 4,532 patients received donated organs from 2,386 donors – living and deceased – in the UK last year - a five per cent increase on figures in 2021/22. There are currently over 7,000 people on the active transplant waiting list in the UK. Clinicians warn that opportunities for transplant are still being missed due to families declining to support donation. People are being urged to confirm their organ donation decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register, families are more likely to support donation when they already know it was what their relative wanted. 9 out of 10 families honour their family member when the donor had confirmed their decision to donate on the NHS Organ Donor Register. Anthony Clarkson, Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “Over 50,000 people are alive in the UK today thanks to the life-saving gift of organ donation,

and 525 people had a transplant in the North East and Yorkshire last year. But this wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our incredible donors and their families who have given their support for donation at what is often the most difficult of times. We know that most people support organ donation in principle, and we have seen a steady increase in the number of people confirming their support for organ donation via the NHS Organ Donor Register, including 3.5 million in the North East and Yorkshire. However, we still need families to support their loved one’s decision and agree to donation when approached, which we know is most likely when they know that’s what they wanted. With only one per cent of people dying in circumstances where organ donation is possible, every donor is precious and has the potential to save up to nine lives. We urge everyone who supports organ donation to confirm their decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register. It is a simple action which only takes two minutes; but can ultimately save lives.” To find out more, and confirm your support for organ donation, visit: www.organdonation.nhs. uk, call 0300 123 23 23 or use the NHS app.

Self Esteem singer Rebecca Lucy Taylor awarded honorary degree from University of Sheffield

Rebecca Lucy Taylor, better known by her stage name Self Esteem, has been awarded an honorary degree from the University of Sheffield, for her success in the music industry and public championing of inclusivity and diversity. Rotherham-born, Rebecca is a critically acclaimed, Mercury nominated singer and proud ambassador for Sheffield.

The chart-topping singer was given the Doctor of Music accolade during a graduation ceremony for students studying in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities on 17 July 2023.

Rebecca joined 11 other notable public figures with links to the city who were awarded honorary degrees in the summer graduation ceremonies, including Olympic gold medalist hockey player Hollie PearneWebb.

The critically-acclaimed singer has taken the music industry by storm and acts as a proud ambassador for Sheffield, performing at Glastonbury 2022 in a Meadowhall-inspired outfit, which was designed in Sheffield.

Rebecca champions inclusive and diverse communities in all the work she does and

as a public educator works to address the rights and aspirations of women to achieve and be proud. Her success has come relatively later in life, which is a transparent element of her identity, and she uses this meteoric and mature rise to reflect upon how women are often positioned in music, despite generations of feminism.

Rebecca’s second album, Prioritise Pleasure, saw her nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Award and the album was also named best album of 2021 by both The Guardian and The Sunday Time. The anthemic single ‘I do this all the time’ was also the Guardian’s Song of the Year for 2021.

A multiinstrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter and theatre composer, Rebecca also won the 2021 BBC Music Introducing award. She most recently composed the

soundtrack to the West End production of Suzie Miller's play Prima Facie, starring Jodie Comer. Rebecca said: “I am insanely chuffed to be receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Sheffield. I love Sheffield with all my heart and to be acknowledged like this bolsters my dream of changing so much for people in music like me. I am overwhelmed, galvanised and energised! Also thrilled to finally get a cute pic of me in a cap and gown, not gonna lie.”

Bradfield is one of the largest parishes in England, and covers extensive moor and agricultural land around the Damflask Reservoir, Dale Dike Reservoir, Strines Reservoir, and Agden Reservoirs, including the Bradfield, Midhope, and Broomhead moors and eastern parts of the Howden moors.

The western end of the parish reaches to the upper parts of the Upper Derwent Valley with part of its boundary forming Yorkshire’s border with Derbyshire. The northern part of the parish includes the Langsett reservoir and Midhope reservoir, and borders the town and civil parish of Stocksbridge.

FOOTBALLR UNDUP

Paul Heckingbottom has added a French U21 international, who lists Liverpool amongst his previous clubs, to United’s ranks, to bolster his defensive options.

Yasser Larouci has penned a season-long loan at Bramall Lane, with an option to buy, arriving from Troyes for the entirety of the forthcoming 2023/24

campaign.

Born in Algeria, Larouci started his career at Le Harve where he captained their U17 side. But having rejected the offer of a contract extension, he subsequently became a free agent and in November 2017 he joined Liverpool. It was during his time at Anfield, where he represented both the

U18s and U21s, that he was converted more into an attacking wingback as opposed to a winger and he helped the Reds win a fourth FA Youth Cup in defeating Manchester City on penalties in 2019. The now 22-year-old started training with Jurgen Klopp’s first team that summer and featured throughout pre-season, both home

and abroad. In January 2020, Larouci made his senior debut in the FA Cup against Everton following an injury to James Milner. At the end of the 2020/21 campaign, Larouci left Merseyside and returned to France, joining Troyes where last season he made 30 appearances in Ligue 1. Holding dual nationality between Algeria and

BLADES DEBUT NEw HOME KIT

The Blades have unveiled their highly anticipated 23/24 Premier League Erreà Home Kit under the campaign tagline “Steel City, Rising”. The new kit symbolises not only the club’s rise to the Premier League but also Sheffield’s transformation from a city rooted in steelmaking to one that thrives on creativity, arts, technology, and music.

The red shirt adorned with two thick white stripes, captures the essence of Sheffield’s rich industrial history, paying homage to the city’s steel heritage and the 1998

home shirt. However, the design also reflects Sheffield’s dynamic present and promising future as a vibrant hub of innovation and culture. Embodying the spirit of resilience and progress, the ‘Steel City, Rising’ campaign perfectly aligns Sheffield United’s journey to the Premier League with the city’s transformation. It celebrates the fusion of tradition and modernity, emphasising the club’s determination to reach new heights while embracing Sheffield’s evolving identity.

The 23/24 Premier League Errea Home Kit showcases the

club’s commitment to excellence on and off the pitch. The vibrant red shirt, representing the strength and passion of the team, features two thick white stripes that symbolise unity and determination. The black and white cuffs and collar add a touch of elegance, representing the blend of old and new that characterises Sheffield’s renaissance.

Inside the neck of the kit, the club and academy motto, “Out Run. Out Fight. Out Play,” serves as a reminder of Sheffield

United’s unwavering dedication and competitive spirit. As the players don the new kit, they carry with them the aspirations of a club and city on the rise. The Blades debuted the home kit in their first pre-season game of the season as Paul Heckingbottom’s Blades were victorious against Chesterfield. Blades fans will be able to purchase this season’s new kit from early August. The club will communicate any changes to the kit in due course.

France, the left-sided operator made his debut for the latter at U21 level and has gone on to win four caps. Of the loan deal for Larouci, boss Heckingbottom said: “We’re pleased and for a number of reasons. It is a position that we knew we needed and to be able to get someone like Yasser in who we think has the qualities and the

Roman was Xisco’s assistant manager at Watford and Dinamo Tbilisi where the pair won the Erovnuli Liga title in Georgia.

Brambilla was goalkeeper coach with the Hornets, a role the Italian also held at Sampdoria and Cagliari in his homeland and French giants Marseille.

looking forward to the opportunity to test himself in the Premier League and added: “To play for Sheffield United and play in the Premier League, I think this is a good project for me. I am happy.

“We (Paul Heckingbottom) talked about the team, the project here and the formation and I think that will suit my game.

“I know a few players here like Rhian and Iliman so that will be good to see them again and to work with them. “I can’t wait to play. Hopefully I can play a part in some of the friendly games, and I will have time to show what I can do on the pitch. It is a chance for me to adapt with the team and everything else.”

Grant McCann is determined to polish a diamond in new signing Deji Sotona. The Rovers boss made the forward his ninth signing of the summer by handing him a twoyear deal following a

successful trial. And he believes the development left in the former Republic of Ireland age group international makes him an exciting talent to work with.

“He’s been really good and we’ve spoken to various people who have worked with him,” McCann said.

“Different types of feedback come back on Deji but anything that comes back that isn’t

To help combat the heat and to ensure that the majority of his squad enjoyed some competitive match minutes, the Millers boss fielded two different XIs either side of the interval.

Not only did the fixture mean minutes under the belt for the Millers, it also provided them with a test against a team playing a contrasting style with Elche having competed in La Liga last season.
