Do you know a future Lioness?

Have you got an amazing young female player on your team? Has she got what it takes to grow from grassroots to greatness? Could she become a Lioness of the future?

Here’s your chance to refer a player and she could take her first step on the Women’s England Talent Pathway. The Referral Window is open from now until the 30th of September 2023 so now’s the perfect time to act.

Last season the FA

saw over 3500 unique referrals and a host of talent that we wouldn’t have discovered without your support.

They need coaches and clubs, volunteers, match officials, teachers or anyone else working with young players who see potential to put forward your players.

The FA are looking for players who are eligible to represent England, who are born between 2006 and 2010, this could even include players who excel in other sports who may have transferable skills!

We want to give them the opportunity to access our inclusive and accessible pathway and importantly they will continue to play in their existing environment, wherever that may be. Our aim is to ensure we supply England teams with the quality, diversity and depth of players to enable England to win another major tournament. In pursuit of this ambition, we’re leaving no stone unturned when it comes to finding future talent across England. So, it’s over to you. If

you have a player in mind, all you need to do is refer her by filling in the Player Referral Form and they will do the rest.

LAST TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR REYTONS HOMETOWN SHOW

After months of waiting, The Reytons are nearly ready to perform their biggest ever hometown show, this time taking on Utilita Arena Sheffield at the end of this month. Support for the Sheffield show will be The K’s, Declan Welsh and The Decadent West. The rise through South Yorkshire’s, and indeed the entire UK’s, venues has been nothing short of meteoric. The journey began with 350 people at Plug (now Network), via The Leadmill, O2 Academy and Magna, before reaching the 12,500 capacity Utilita Arena. Judging by the

energy and atmosphere of all those previous shows, this will surely be a night to remember. Releasing 100% independently, with no label backing, The Reytons have also announced their second album is set for release on 27th January 2023, just over 12 months since their debut album rocketed to Number 11 in the Official UK Charts, with over 20,000 sales to date.

Since the release of their debut album ‘Kids Off The Estate’ in November 2021, The Reytons have gone from strength to strength, the word of mouth sensation spreading like wildfire

throughout the UK. The band now boast an impressive 750k+ monthly listeners on Spotify, however this online popularity is far from superficial.

Over 17,000 fans are set to see the band live on their huge sold-out UK tour this Autumn, including landmark dates at Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom, London’s Electric Ballroom and Nottingham’s Rock City, to name just a few.

The last few remaining ticket ar enow available through www. utilitaarenasheffield. co.uk

HavE YOU MadE a wIll?

A shocking 62% of people in Yorkshire and the Humber do not have a will, new research has found.

A poll commissioned by charity will-writing campaign Will Aid, found that nationally 59% of the population do not have paperwork protecting their loved ones in the event of their death. The statistics for Yorkshire and the Humber paint an even bleaker picture for the region and Peter de Vena Franks, campaign director for Will Aid said it was vital that those without one considered the benefits of getting their affairs in order. He said: “The results show that nationally we have a population that is burying its head in the sand when it comes to preparing their loved ones for the inevitable. And in Yorkshire and the Humber we can see that the situation is also concerning. Our poll delved into the many reasons why people avoid drawing up a will with many citing the difficulties they have talking about and thinking about death. We recognise that this is a tricky conversation to have with the people you care about but drawing up paperwork to protect the ones you love, after you are gone comes with a sense of peace. Another barrier to making a will was cited as expense which, in light of the current cost of living crisis, is understandable. Will Aid can provide a cost-effective solution that comes with the security that a will is being drafted by a professional, regulated and insured solicitor while you also help vulnerable charities that are also struggling at this time.” Yorkshire and the Humber ranks third in the top five areas of people

CALL

without a will. The top region is Northern Ireland with 75% and the North West is second. Yorkshire and The Humber is joint third with the West Midlands, ranking fourth is Wales and the North East in fifth with 60%.

Will Aid runs for the month of November and raises money for nine of the UK’s best-loved charities: ActionAid, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save The Children, Sightsavers, Age UK, SCIAF (Scotland) and Trocaire (Northern Ireland). Solicitors volunteer their time to charity to write wills for members of the public.

Instead of paying the usual fee for the will, the client is asked to make a voluntary upfront donation to Will Aid.

The suggested donation for a basic Will Aid will is £100 for a single will and £180 for a pair of mirror wills. Mr de Vena Franks said: “There are still so many people in the UK who do not have a will and this needs to be addressed. A will is the best way for a person to make an active choice about inheritance and estates, not to mention make decisions on the guardianship of underage children.”

The region’s shortage of people with wills is also reflected in the results found by city, where Sheffield also ranks third in the worst affected areas by city. Those who wish to book an appointment with a solicitor to make a will in November can do so from September onwards via our website or by calling us on 0300 0309 558. Sheffield Cathedral’s magnificent Christmas lightshow returns for another year with tickets for this popular event on sale from 10am on 1 September.

For the past few years friends and families have started their Christmas celebrations at the cathedral, marvelling at the incredible multisensory immersive experience inside and out. Last year, nearly 10,000 people enjoyed the stunning spectacle.

This year, Sheffield Cathedral Illuminated: Starlight will take you to the heart of the Nativity story. Through stunning projections visitors will be guided on a journey with the three wise men as they follow a star to Bethlehem in search of a newborn king. Watch as the cathedral’s ancient architecture comes alive with dazzling displays and listen to a bespoke soundscape throughout the building. Wander around, at your own pace, soak up all the festive feelings of goodwill, enjoy the beautifully decorated Christmas trees in the cathedral’s annual Christmas Tree Festival, relish in seasonal treats from 1554 Coffee and Gift Shop and say a prayer and light a candle next to the famous Sheffield Steel Nativity.

“Christmas is a very special time of the year and we’re delighted so many people come to share it with us. We’re also really pleased to open the forecourt this year so everyone passing the Cathedral during the week of the lightshow can enjoy what’s taking place outside. It’s our ‘gift to the city.’” said Ben Rossi, cathedral Development Manager.

“We’re also hoping to be able to organise carol singing on the forecourt before the doors to the

cathedral open to the first visitors at 5.30pm. We’ve also decided to reduce the cost of the tickets to come inside and enjoy what’s happening. We understand it’s been a difficult year and want as many people as possible to enjoy the lightshow.”

This initiative is being supported by Utilita Energy Hub: “From our vantage point we see all the good things the cathedral does for the community. Our charity, Utilita Giving is community focussed so supporting the cathedral to make the lightshow more affordable makes sense to us. We are here to help.” commented Faye Wilby. The award-winning Luxmuralis will once again be the expert team behind this remarkable event.

Peter Walker, Artistic Director said: “We are thrilled to be returning to Sheffield Cathedral. It is a highlight of our calendar to bring art to the city at Christmas time, which it has embraced so wonderfully over the past years. We are delighted that this year the project will also allow more people to experience the outside of the Cathedral, before venturing inside to see this sacred place come to life through a truly immersive experience. We have a wonderful partnership with the fantastic team at the Cathedral and it is therefore fitting that we will present Starlight for the first time here in Sheffield.”

You can buy tickets for Sheffield Cathedral Illuminated: Starlight online through the cathedral’s website, www. sheffieldcathedral.org or in person from 1554 Cathedral Gift Shop. If you buy your tickets before 30 September you will save even more with discounts of up to 10% with ‘early bird’ prices.

Mature job seekers can face many challenges, including being perceived as overqualified, less innovative, or lowerenergy than their younger peers. Fortunately, your cover letter is a powerful tool that allows you to frame your experience and skills in a positive and attractive light, especially when you mention these three things.

1. Explanation of Your Current Situation

Right off the bat, it’s best to address what is likely to be the hiring manager’s first question: Why are you looking for a new job at this point in your life? Perhaps you took time off from your career to raise your children, to care for an ailing family member, or to overcome an illness yourself. If you have a gap in your work experience, give a brief explanation in your cover letter and mention how you have kept your skills current through attending industry events, completing continuing education courses, or whatever it may be. If you are applying to a more senior role within your industry, make it clear how your experience and skills have prepared you to succeed. In this scenario, a long and successful career will likely work in your favour. Or, if you are looking to change careers by applying to roles for which you are technically overqualified, reassure the hiring manager that you aren’t planning to leave as soon as a better opportunity comes along. For example, you could write that you are looking to ramp down your responsibilities in the later stages of your career in

order to promote a better work-life balance.

2. Relevant and Transferable Skills

The next thing a hiring manager is likely to look at is whether you have the skills necessary for the position. While you can list your skills on your resume, use your cover letter as an opportunity to expand on these skills and to present realworld examples of how you’ve honed your skills and how they’ve helped you succeed. Be sure to include both hard and soft skills to show the hiring manager that you are a well-rounded candidate. Hard skills are measurable and job-specific, like the ability to use Adobe design software or holding a Realtor certification. Soft skills are less tangible and often aren’t specific to a job or industry, such as leadership ability, communication skills, and so forth.

3. Proficiency with Technology

Particularly in heavily tech-reliant fields, some hiring managers may have qualms about hiring a more mature candidate who might not be as proficient with current technologies as a younger person. Even in roles that aren’t necessarily techbased, it’s still important to be able to use software such as POS systems, digital communication platforms, online databases, and so forth. As such, it’s important to make it clear in your cover letter as well as on your resume that you are up-to-speed with industry technology and able to learn and adopt new tech quickly.

As a Council we are taking a proactive cross-Party approach to ensure we manage this challenge in the best way possible for the people of Sheffield. Key areas of spend include:

• Education, Children and Families – The main expenditure here is placements, meaning children placed in care and the cost associated with this. It’s important that every child across the city has a warm, safe place to live, and this is something we are determined to deliver. There are limited places in the city and in some cases, the most complex children can cost a great deal more. High cost placements are also being reviewed.

• Adult Social Care - Work continues to reduce expenditure in this area, focussing on enablement of people out of care, day services, and reviewing high cost one to one support packages, whilst maximising income.

• Homelessness Support

– The Government does not fully subsidise all housing benefit payments made by the Council even though it sets the rules that determine the amount the Council has to pay. Councillor Zahira Naz, Chair of the Finance Committee, said: “We and other councils have had our budgets hammered by cuts from central

government over the last 13 years. In Sheffield we’ve been vocal about that and will continue calling on the Government to step up and provide fairer funding. Demand is rising as funding plunges – there are no easy decisions left to take. Despite this, we know we must act for the people of Sheffield. Yes, we have to make significant savings, but we’re also looking at our approach to budget planning over the next 3-4 years to get us on a steady and consistent footing. Let there be no doubt –this position is tough. But by tackling these issues early, transparently, and proactively and crossparty, we’re doing all we can to protect the services we know the people of Sheffield rely on. We can’t forget that following a damaging pandemic, we’re still stuck in the national cost of living crisis – as a Council we will continue to focus on supporting those who need it most. There is a mammoth task ahead of us, and every year it gets harder. But –whether it’s supporting our young people, tackling homelessness, hosting major events, or unveiling major regeneration in the city – we will continue to deliver for this incredible city.”

HELP NEEDED FOR PUBS THIS WINTER

Ofgem must act quickly to enact recommendations to ensure businesses avoid another winter energy crisis, the BBPA has warned.

Responding to Ofgem’s nondomestic market review consultation, the trade body supported most measures put forward by the regulator, but stressed the need for urgency if businesses were to avoid the threat sky-high energy costs again this coming winter. With energy costs still posing a serious threat to the viability and survival of many pub businesses, with 15% citing risk of failure in the next 12 months and 95% of those flagging energy as a significant contributor to possible failure*, the BBPA is calling on Ofgem to listen to businesses and to implement proposed measures quickly to ensure they can regulate the non-

domestic market effectively and fairly as soon as possible.

Representing the interests of its members, the BBPA’s response also noted that:

• It is essential that Government support Ofgem to implement the recommendations laid out in the non-domestic market review to ensure the protection of vulnerable businesses and that entire sectors are not held to ransom in the future

• There should be parity between the protection of domestic and non-domestic users in the energy market.

• Ofgem must ensure that where policy options initially rely on voluntary measures for suppliers, that there is also recourse to more binding mechanisms to ensure expected standards of conduct and behaviour are met and maintained.

Speaking to the consultation response, Emma McClarkin Chief Executive of the British Beer and Pub Association said: “Just last week we saw Ofgem rightly step in once again for domestic users, but we must not forget that thousands of businesses are still struggling with their energy bills, and this will only get worse as we head into the colder months.

“We support Ofgem’s recommendations, which are sound and sensible, but they mean very little if they are not implemented quickly to protect businesses from future energy price hikes. In turn, the Government must also recognise the severity of this issue has not gone away and ensure Ofgem has the power to regulate effectively now and protect our pubs and brewers in the future as well.”

Clubs urged to get involved in Cask Ale Week

Running from Thursday, September 21 to Sunday, October 1, Cask Ale Week 2023 is a chance to promote your club's cask ale offering.

Formed in the early noughties by Cask Marque, Cask Ale Week is supported by the major trade organisations and brewers as well as the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

If your club wants to get involved (you don't have to be a member of Cask Marque), you can check out idea and tips at caskaleweek. co.uk as well as requesting an information pack.

You can also download images, logos and posters in order to promote your club during the week on social media channels and inside your venue. Meanwhile, best clubs across the

UK have been announced as part of CAMRA’s prestigious Club of the Year competition 2023.

CAMRA is delighted to reveal the 16 regional finalists who now compete for the CAMRA Club of the Year title in association with Club Mirror, one of the highest accolades afforded to the UK’s clubs.

Wortley Club in Sheffield will be representing Yorkshire this year. The multiple CAMRA award-winning club has received accolades including local, regional and national Club of the Year, and is celebrating its 11th consecutive year in the Guide. The club is situated in the pretty rural village of Wortley, near to Wortley Hall and gardens. The lovely building has exposed timber frames, ornate ceilings, wooden panelling and a real fire. Guest ales are sourced from local and national breweries. The club runs an annual beer festival in July. The four 'Super Round' winners will be announced at Club Mirror Awards at the end of November. Mystery judging will take place in December where one will then be crowned National Club of the Year.

When Daphne’s Flight completed their last tour in 2018 and after a handful of euphoric festival performances in 2019 which garnered them an army of new followers, the stage was set for a 25th anniversary tour in 2020 with a brand new album to launch and celebrate. Then the world turned upside down. What followed were two frustrating years of postponed dates and a career sitting idle, unable to capitalise on the momentum that had been building since their 2017 reunion tour. Now the heavy cloud of the pandemic has lifted and the stage is set for a euphoric return to touring for Daphne’s Flight. With a heavy heart, Christine Collister pulled out of the band for personal reasons at the beginning of 2022 so Chris, Helen, Julie and Mel asked Miranda Sykes (Show of Hands) to join the band. The result in rehearsals couldn’t be better, the blend of personalities and musical synergy has given new energy and hope to Daphne’s and so a new chapter begins. Five individually successful solo artists in their own rights, together they create a unique and unparalleled force, empowering women of all ages, producing music that is relatable, moving and uplifting and creating a chemistry on stage that is both joyful and contagious. Ask any musician what they are most looking forward to post pandemic and the resounding answer will be performing on stage again to live audiences.

RETURN OF THE MC

United’s tenth signing of the transfer window is a major capture with James McAtee returning to Bramall Lane on a season-long loan.

Manchester City and the Blades have agreed terms for the popular McAtee to join United once again on a temporary basis and Paul Heckingbottom is delighted the club’s patience has been rewarded: “Everyone knows the respect I have for Macca, both as a person and a footballer - and that goes for the staff and the squad who played with him last season, he was a big part of our promotion campaign. “He offers us something different on the pitch, he’s a quality footballer and will fit in immediately. Hopefully, he and we can enjoy this Premier League journey.”

McAtee, 20, was a huge hit with supporters as the Blades secured promotion last season, scoring nine goals in 43 appearances in all competitions, including a number of memorable performances.

He was keen to return to S2 to continue his development, adding:

“I’m excited to be back and I can’t wait to get back out onto the pitch.

“It has been very lastminute, I’ve kept my head down, trained hard at City and waited to see what was happening. I think the emotional connection with the club and the opportunity to play in the Premier League were big factors in me coming back.

“I got a warm welcome last week when I came back with City - thanks to all the fans for that - and it was a great game. I had mixed emotions, it was a special atmosphere, I was telling my mates about the Greasy Chip Butty song.”

The Salford-born playmaker worked his way through the City academy, making four Football League Trophy appearances between 2019 and 2020.

During the 2021/22 season, he broke into City’s first team for the EFL Cup tie against Wycombe, having netted in the Papa John’s Trophy against

Scunthorpe United. It was a season where he also made his Premier League debut against Everton and also played two FA Cup matches. He then made his Champions League bow against Sporting at the Etihad.

He joined United before the start of last season, and after a tough start quickly acclimatised to life in the Championship. After netting his first goal in the thrilling 3-3 draw against Blackpool, he went from strengthto-strength, enjoying a productive festive period with a Boxing Day strike in the home win over Coventry and a notable solo goal a few days later in an away win at Blackpool. Perhaps his most memorable moments arrived during the season run-in, netting the winner at Norwich, the equaliser in the 4-1 home success over

Cardiff and another winning strike at home to Bristol City. His impressive campaign saw him win United’s Young Player of the Year award.

This season he’s been in the matchday squad for every Manchester City Premier League game, including most recently against the Blades, and made a cameo appearance off the bench during the season opener against Burnley.

Capped by England at both U18 and U20 level previously, he made his debut for the U21s in June 2022.

Anis Slimane, Yasser Larouci, Benie Traore, Auston Trusty, Vinicius Souza, Gustavo Hamer, Tom Davies, Cameron Archer, Luke Thomas and now McAtee have all agreed deals with the club this summer ahead of today’s transfer deadline.

Xisco praised a committed, team performance from the Owls following our 0-0 draw with Leeds at Elland Road. The Wednesday boss was pleased with the consistency of his side’s showing against the Whites and looks

forward to further improvement.

Xisco said: “Every day we need to perform and give better things. We need to give more consistency like the performance today.

“We showed very good attention, we are thinking like a team

and we played like a team. We gave 100% in all the actions and it was a very good performance today.

“There are some areas we need to improve, this is only one step and we must continue to work hard.

“I am happy for the

players, I was sad for them after Cardiff because we didn’t get the points after the performance.

“We created more chances today and this is what we need to give in our performances.”

OWLS STRENGTHEN WITH LOAN dUO

The Owls have signed Jeff Hendrick on a loan deal from Premier League side Newcastle United.

The midfield man joins Wednesday for the remainder of the season. Hendrick brings a wealth of experience to Hillsborough, with over 400 senior appearances to his name, the majority of which were posted in the Championship. The Dublin product also has 38 goals to his name and 79 caps on the international stage with the Republic of Ireland. After making just shy of 200 appearances

We’d have beat Swindon with 11 men

Grant McCann is convinced Rovers would have picked up their first league win of the season had they had 11 men throughout their clash with Swindon Town. Rovers had been on top for the majority of the first half when Tommy Rowe was dismissed just

for Derby, a move to Burnley followed for a four-year stay at Turf Moor.

Newcastle came calling next and the 31-yearold has since enjoyed loan moves to QPR and Reading.

He now links up with Wednesday and has been allocated shirt number 22 for the duration of his S6 stint.

The Owls have also signed John Buckley from Blackburn Rovers on a loan deal for the remainder of the season.

The young midfielder came through the ranks at Ewood Park having joined the Blackburn

before the break. It set the scene for a battling performance in which Rovers earned a goalless draw with the unbeaten Robins.

“In my opinion, we win the game if we have 11 men on the pitch but it wasn’t to be,” he said.

“We wanted to take the three points and we have to settle for the point and the 0-0.

“But I think we have to respect that point today. When I say that, I mean

academy at the tender age of six - and is no stranger to the Owls after making his senior debut and scoring his first professional goal against Wednesday.

Buckley has passed a century of first team appearances for Blackburn and now moves this side of the Pennines with the Owls. He told swfc.co.uk: “I have an affinity with Wednesday, I made my debut against Wednesday and scored my first goal!

“On top of that, when I was a lot younger, the coach was a big Wednesday fan and

it’s a big point given the shift the boys put in during the week and then having to go again with ten men for the majority of the game.

“It’s a massive shift from the lads.

“After the first ten or 15 minutes or so we started to find our feet. You could feel the crowd getting up.”

The result brought to an end an intense week for Rovers as they followed up the trip to MK Dons

he brought me to Hillsborough to watch games, he said I’d love it and I did.

“I looked at the stadium then and thought it was amazing, it’s a massive club and now here I am.

“I know Barry Bannan as well, he really sold the club to me and the same with the manager.

“I like his style of play and his principles that really suit me as I’m a creative player who likes to get on the ball and make things happen.

“I’m told it’s a great group of lads at the club, it’s a really exciting move for me and I can’t wait to get started.”

with a fully committed performance against Premier League side Everton in the Carabao Cup. And McCann admitted the upcoming blank midweek will be welcomed. “I think it’s important they get a bit of a breather in the early part of the week,” he said. “It’s been a tough week, we’ve been in every single day and we’ve had three tough games in quick succession.
