SHEFFIELD’S FOOTBALL MUSEUM TAKES A STEP FORWARD

The prospect of a Sheffield football museum has taken a step forward with the launch of a new charity aimed at making the footballing heritage museum in the centre of Sheffield a reality. Sheffield Home of Football has recruited a new board of trustees and has established a newly registered charity which was approved on the 21st of August this year . It was formally launched last week with a celebration at Sheffield Town Hall in the company of the Lord Mayor Colin Ross, many of it’s new supporters, City MP’s, both football clubs, the Universities and

Sheffield City Councillors. Former Sheffield MP and Minister of Sport, Richard Caborn, Sheffield MP’s Clive Betts and Paul Blomfield attended along with former International referee Keith Hackett and Former Sheffield United and England Legend Tony Currie and his wife. Kate Joseph’s the Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council said “It’s an exciting new development and now with this new charity and a clear plan, we have something we can work with to make sure this becomes a reality”. The event was also attended by former Master and Mistress Cutler James & Jo and Mistress

New Chair of Trustees Councillor Denise Fox said “Enormous thanks to all our new trustees and supporters and everyone for coming along to support us”. alongside a programme of education about Sheffield‘s unique role in the development of the modern game of football from the 19 century to the modern day, said Denise. “In the New Year, we will be developing a series of football walking tours around the city with our football app, and organising a series of lectures and other events to raise the profile of our work in Sheffield. We also want to work with schools, community and businesses groups to undertake outreach and develop this element of our work”. “Meanwhile, our search for a building continues,

and we are appealing to anyone with suitable premises in the centre of Sheffield to come and speak to us and once we know the location and cost of this, we will launch a public appeal for support and put bids in to the National Lottery private trusts and other funders such to really accelerate our fundraising to make it a reality” added Denise. ocd awareness week will-aid week cycle route markets development Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is all too often misunderstood and no two cases are ever the same, an expert has said. Lynn Crilly, an author and counsellor, also said the condition can strike at any age. Speaking to shine a light on OCD Awareness Week, Lynn said: “OCD is a mental disorder and like all mental disorders not only has it a huge stigma attached, it can also be fearfully misunderstood as it cannot be seen by the visual eye, so therefore it can be harder to diagnose. For the sufferer, who will have no doubt thought they were losing their mind up until diagnosis, it will be very difficult to come to terms with. They’ll have known for some time that something could potentially be wrong, but their brain can trick them into thinking all is normal, so the diagnosis of a legitimate mental illness is often a shock. It typically first starts to significantly interfere with a person’s life during early adulthood, although problems can develop at any age. No two cases are ever the same, they are all unique to the individual sufferer, below is a summary of the familiar ‘facts’ which are often quoted in relation to obsessive compulsive disorder.” OCD FACTBOX: What is OCD? OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) is a mental health disorder that causes people to suffer from obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours. OCD obsessions are reoccurring and unwanted thoughts, urges or images which can cause distress and anxiety. Examples of symptoms include needing things orderly or symmetrical, doubting

and having difficulty tolerating uncertainty and fear of contamination. OCD compulsions are repetitive behaviours you feel you must perform to reduce anxiety related to obsessions or to prevent something bad from happening. Examples of this are persistently cleaning, checking and counting. How many people are impacted by it? OCD affects approximately 70 million individuals worldwide. Although it can occur in anyone at any age, the general age for onset is between 8-12 years, and late teen-early adulthood years. However, it is a hard disorder to diagnose, a German study showed a 70% misdiagnosis rate in 2010. This is because symptoms show similarity to those of anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, OCPD and other mental health disorders. It can also just go unrecognised, with sufferers thought to sometimes spend 10 years untreated. How can it be treated? There are two main treatments for OCD. The first is ‘talking therapy’, which is talking about your obsessions and compulsions without actually acting on them. Confronting fears helps to calm anxiety and therefore overcome the disorder. People with fairly mild OCD will require about 8-20 sessions of this treatment, whereas more severe cases will need a longer course. The second treatment is medication, typically an antidepressant medicine which can help by altering the balance of chemicals in your brain. This is used when talking therapy does not help, or if the condition is severe. To decide diagnosis and treatment, a GP or the NHS should be contacted.

During the current costof-living crisis, the annual Will Aid campaign which sees solicitors across the UK volunteering their time to write Wills throughout November, represents a great opportunity to tick writing your will off your to-do-list, and ensure your family’s future is protected November is Will Aid’s annual UK-wide fundraising campaign involving nine of the UK’s leading charities that share the proceeds: ActionAid, Age UK, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save the Children, Sightsavers, SCIAF (Scotland) and Trocaire (N. Ireland). Will Aid is open and appointments are now available. Like previous years there is expected to be a high demand, so people are encouraged to book an appointment now with a participating solicitor, which they can find via the Will Aid website. Will Aid has been running since 1988 and is open to all adults. The campaign has encouraged more than 350,000 people to write their will with a regulated and insured solicitor and, in so doing has raised over £24 million in donations, and many millions more in pledged legacies. The suggested voluntary donation is £100 for a single will and £180 for a pair of mirror wills. Peter de Vena Franks, Campaign Director for Will Aid, said: “The money raised each year is incredibly important for each of our partner charities. I encourage anyone who does not yet have a will to use this opportunity to protect loved ones and causes close to them.” Jonathan Chase, Chair of Will Aid, added: “We are very grateful to all the solicitors, new and returning, who selflessly volunteer their time to write thousands of wills without their normal fee each year. Not only does their philanthropy help thousands of local people protect their loved ones and causes close to them with a professionally written will, but it also helps the Will Aid partner charities continue their life-changing work.”

Temporary road changes have been made permanent on the Sheaf Valley Cycle Route following a more than a 62% increase in cycle trips in the past two years.In May 2022 a number of alterations were made to roads in the area on a temporary basis to create a safer, low-traffic, active travel route between Sheffield City Centre and Norton Hammer. The Sheaf Valley Cycle Route (SVCR) connects other existing and planned cycle routes in the city, helping to make cycling more accessible, safer and a more convenient choice for everyone, including families and young children. These schemes include Castlegate’s Grey to Green, the City CentreAttercliffe-Darnall route, alterations in Nether Edge, as well as the number of changes taking place in Kelham, Neepsend and the wider city centre. Proposed bus priority schemes in the south west of the city will also complement the SVCR, supporting improved journey times for bus passengers and other road users along these roads. Perception surveys from local residents around the SVCR show 37% of respondents feel that they walk more than they did before the interventions were put in place. Of those that say they cycle, 45% said that the scheme has resulted in them cycling more than they did before. The route will give people who do not have access to cars the opportunity to travel by cycle or on foot more safely. Walking trips are estimated to have increased on average by around 15% across the full route. This includes a 35% increase on parts of Saxon Rd and 39% on parts of London Rd. In addition, the route helps to connect some of the most in demand areas in the city, including the train station, bus station, Sheffield Hallam University, a number of schools and colleges, Victoria Quays and West Bar.

rose garden cafe A decision on the longterm future of the Rose Garden Café in Graves Park is to be made at an Extraordinary Charity Trustee Sub-Committee on Wednesday 18 October. The Charity SubCommittee will be asked to vote on the recommendations in the Council’s latest report, which are to pause looking at the new build or demolition option and agree to pursue the two remaining viable options – a full or partial restoration of the existing building. Proposals on the long-term options were heard at The Charity Trustee Sub-Committee in October last year. Since then, a feasibility study has been commissioned to understand the condition of the existing building, the level of repair and refurbishment works required and the options for the café building. All the necessary surveys have now been carried out and the list of options has been developed and appraised. Once a decision is made at committee, there will then be a city-wide consultation exercise and the Council will continue to work with Brewkitchen, the café operator, the Friends of Graves Park group, the Save the Rose Garden Café Campaign group, and

all other stakeholders. Councillor Ian Auckland, Chair of the Charity Trustee Sub-Committee said: “In October 2022, the council’s Charity Trust Sub-Committee approved five options for further investigation for Rose Garden Café and at next month’s committee we will look at the current proposals. The Charity Trust Sub-Committee will be provided with all the relevant information and consider all factors, including the consultation, costs, and available funding. If the committee members agree the recommendations, I will want to move quickly after that to secure the future of the Rose Garden Café in a partnership with the community. We will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to progress this project as quickly as we can. Crystal Peaks shopping centre has been confirmed as the official sponsor of the 2023 St Luke’s Hospice Winter Raffle. OWLS ANNOUNCE Danny Röhl AS NEW MANAGER HONOURS EVEN IN U21 DERBY The Owls have confirmed Danny Röhl as their new manager, and here we delve into the German’s everrising career. At just 34 years old,

Röhl’s experience as a coach has seen him go head-to-head with Europe’s elite, plying his trade at the very top of the game. Having had his playing career cut

short through injury, Röhl began working as a video analyst with RB Leipzig’s youth sides, before moving into a coaching role with the younger teams at

a time when former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick was first team manager. He later stepped up to first team coaching duties at Die Roten Bullen in 2016 under Ralph Hassenhuttl. Having gained promotion from 2. Bundesliga, the pair guided RB Leipzig to the runners-up spot in the club’s maiden top flight campaign, qualifying for the Champions League. In 2017/18, RBL finished in sixth place and reached the quarterfinals of the Europa League. Röhl made his first

switch to England in 2018, joining Premier League Southampton with Hassenhuttl, successfully helping the Saints to survival. He departed St Mary’s the following season for European giants Bayern Munich. He was assistant manager to coach Hansi Flick and would enjoy playing a key role in one of Bayern’s most successful campaigns in recent history. The club won the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League title to complete the coveted treble in 2019/20.

The following season, Bayern retained their Bundesliga trophy while also triumphing in the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. Röhl’s success with Flick saw the duo make another step up, this time to international level with the German national team at the end of the 2020/21 season. He left Germany last month and now makes his first foray into management with the Owls, backed by a plethora of success in his burgeoning career to date.
