Grassroots heroes recognised at awards ceremony Earlier this month, grassroots football’s finest were recognised at a prestigious awards ceremony at Hillsborough. The awards, which recognise local winners and highly commended recipients of the England Football Grassroots Football Awards 2023, were presented by BBC Radio Sheffield Sports Editor Andy Giddings. The local grassroots community made over 160+ nominations across 12 categories earlier in the year, and the winners and highly commended recipients were selected by an independent judging panel.

A certificate and award were presented to each winner and highly commended recipient by Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA Intern Chair Brian Coddington.

Charity launches fundraising appeal on 16th anniversary of Vulcan XH558's triumphant return to flight Thousands of people have become a part of the history of the last airworthy Vulcan bomber by having their name added to her wing. The Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST) is marking the 16th anniversary of XH558 returning to flight by offering supporters a chance to have a name added to the iconic aircraft under the bomb-bay doors. The VTST, the charity responsible for XH558, the last airworthy Vulcan that stopped flying in 2015, is giving people the opportunity to celebrate Vulcan XH558’s second display career and have their name placed under the bomb-bay doors of the iconic aircraft. The Trust, who are working closely with the current owners of the airport and partners on a plan that will hopefully see XH558 remain in Doncaster, are keen to provide improved access to the Vulcan for supporters. Marc Walters, chief executive of VTST, said: “We know how much it means to supporters to have their name on XH558 and become part of her history. Thousands of people have already shown their support and had their name or that of a loved one placed under the wings of this iconic aircraft. “October holds great

significance for Vulcan XH558, on October 18, 2007, she took her first post restoration flight and on October 28, 2015, she performed her last flight – making this the final ever flight of an Avro Vulcan. “To mark these significant moments in XH558’s flying career, we are offering supporters the opportunity to have their name on XH558, giving them a permanent connection to this remarkable and historically important aircraft. “We know that our supporters want to see XH558, and people love to visit and see the name that they have chosen taking pride of place on this iconic aircraft and that is why it is important for us to let people know that we are working closely with the airports owners on a plan that we hope will see XH558 remain in Doncaster with increased access for supporters via a series of open days in 2024. “Given the current uncertainty around the future ownership of the site we are conscious that any agreement may be temporary, but we remain hopeful that an agreement that is suitable for both parties can be agreed.” Doncaster Sheffield Airport closed after owners, Peel Land

and Property, conducted a strategic review of its costs. The local council have since expressed interest in reopening the airport and are in ongoing discussions with Peel. “We were thrilled to see Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones publicly started that she would hope to see Vulcan XH558 remain in Doncaster for years to come,” added Marc. As part of her illustrious history, it was on July 1, 1960, Vulcan XH558 was the first Vulcan B.2 to enter RAF service and after nearly 33 years she was the last Vulcan to leave service. She was the star of the RAF’s Vulcan Display Flight for six years, from May 1986 to September 1992. The RAF’s Vulcan bombers carried Britain's strategic nuclear deterrent during much of the Cold War. Whilst the Vulcan fleet’s operational service ceased in 1984, XH558 flew on in the display role until finally retiring from RAF service on March 23,1993. The Vulcan to the Sky Trust have asked for donations of £35 per name – these will be unveiled on the bomb-bay doors in 2024. In 1997, Dr Robert Pleming and a small team started to investigate the possibility of returning Vulcan XH558 to

flight. Ten years and £7million later, she made her first post-restoration test flight in October 2007. It was an incredible triumph of British engineering, public support and determination. XH558 flew for eight further display seasons that no-one thought they would ever see, thrilling an estimated 20million people across the UK. Grounded in 2015 XH558 has

spent the last seven years at Doncaster Sheffield Airport and has continued to wow fans and supporters both in the hangar and during engine ground runs and organised tours. All names will be added to the aircraft early in 2024 and details of how supporters can visit to see their name in place will be made available later in the year. Marc added: “We are

continuously bowled over by the support shown to the project and this latest appeal will help the team of volunteers to continue to keep XH558 well maintained and looked after.”

urgent blood appeal bonfire night rules and guidance foodbank appeals for O negative and B negative blood donors in Sheffield are being asked to help the NHS prepare for the challenging winter period by booking and sticking to their upcoming appointments to help build stocks. While overall blood stocks remain above the target of six days, O negative and B negative stocks have come under pressure and donors with those types are being asked to help the NHS build stocks. Existing O and B negative donors who are fit and healthy should call 0300 123 23 23 for a priority appointment, and to book in their next appointment as well. Sheffield Donor Centre, in Cathedral Court, Church Street, has good appointment availability with 162 spare appointments over the next seven days and hundreds more in the coming weeks. Donors are being asked to keep their appointment or give as much notice as possible if they need to cancel. Mark Chambers, Director of Donor Experience at NHS Blood and Transplant said: “O negative and B negative blood stocks are currently lower than we’d like so we’re encouraging our amazing donors in Sheffield to please come forward and help us prepare for the busy winter period. We understand people may have plans during the upcoming school holidays, but please don’t forget your appointment if you have one. We also see an increase in appointment cancellations at this time of year due to seasonal illnesses, so we’re asking if donors can please give at least three days’ notice if they need to cancel so the place can be offered to another donor. Donor and staff safety is our priority so if you are under the weather, please rest,

recover, and rebook. We are also urging people who have registered but not yet donated to make their first appointment now. If they don’t know their blood type, then they will find out after donating for the first time – they may have one of the types we need. It only takes an hour to give blood and each donation can help save or improve up to three lives.” People who have registered as a donor but not yet made an appointment to give blood are also encouraged to take that next step and make their first donation, and they will find out their blood type when they do. In Sheffield 650 people who registered with Give Blood in 2023 have yet to make an appointment to donate. Existing donors for all other blood types are asked to continue donating as normal. Only eight per cent of the population have O negative blood but it accounts for around 14 per cent of the blood hospitals need so more O negative donors are needed than other types. B negative is one of the rarest blood types as just 2% of our blood donors have it. We always need more B negative donors and rely heavily on the support and commitment of existing donors to ensure patients receive the blood they need. Blood is needed to help the NHS treat patients with cancer, blood disorders and those suffering medical trauma or undergoing surgery, and O negative blood is mostly used for emergency care. Transportation of Fireworks Vehicle Requirements The transportation of fireworks is regulated, especially for larger quantities. Small amounts for personal use generally don’t require a special vehicle, but for larger quantities, vehicles with a Vehicle Special Order (VSO) might be required. Hazardous Material Regulations If you’re transporting large quantities, you’ll have to adhere to the regulations outlined for hazardous goods, which could require specialised storage solutions within the vehicle. With food banks and charities facing increasing levels of need this winter, people are being urged to give the gift of their time to take part in the UK’s biggest food donation drive. The Tesco Food Collection is taking place in all Tesco stores from November 30th to December 2nd and the Trussell Trust and FareShare are urging volunteers to sign-up to support the event in store. It comes as both charities face their busiest winter yet as more people turn to them for support. The Trussell Trust, which has the largest foodbank network in the UK, is expecting to distribute more than 1 million emergency food parcels between December and February, while FareShare has over 1,500 frontline charities on its waiting list seeking food. During the collection Tesco customers will be encouraged to donate long-life food to support the charities in their work. Donations for the Trussell Trust will help its network of food banks provide emergency food parcels to people who cannot afford the essentials, while donations to FareShare will get food to its network of 8,500 local charities and community groups. Tesco is calling on volunteers to staff collection points to raise awareness of the impact every donation will have on people across the UK, who rely on Trussell Trust and FareShare for food. Mixed-use shipping container development proposed for Sheffield site

A mixed-use development comprising a series of shipping containers to provide food and drink units and a stage for live music and events has been proposed for a site in Sheffield city centre. Pond Gate Estate 1 Ltd and Pond Gate Estate 2 Ltd have submitted an application to Sheffield City Council for development on land off Arundel Gate, between the O2 Academy and Odeon Sheffield. Planning permission is sought for the installation of a series of shipping containers arranged over two floors around a large open air central 'plaza' seating area. These would be occupied by bar and street food vendors. The plans also include the construction of a concrete podium

deck as a stage for live music and entertainment. A screen would be suspended to the rear of the stage, with other screens located around the site and at upper levels. The development would have a total area of about 26,350 sq ft. The proposed opening hours are 7am to 1am Monday to Sunday, a maximum occupancy of 1,600 people at any one time. Annual footfall of about one million is expected. The development is expected to support 54 full-time and 86 parttime jobs. STACK, which is behind similar developments in the North East, is set to operate the scheme, with the plans developed as a co-ordinated joint application.

A design and access statement submitted as part of the application said: "The proposals will breathe new life into an area of the city centre that currently fails to contribute positively to the local economy or street scene. "The proposal creates an opportunity enhance the public realm locally, tie into wider proposals on Arundel Gate and to extend the cultural and leisure hub around the Crucible and Lyceum theatres to further enhance the vibrancy of that area of the city and will have a positive social and economic impact on the city." The project team includes Pegasus Group, KPP Architects, and Dunwoodie Swift Architects.

Action from the Chancellor of the Exchequer to cut duty on beer and cider served in pubs, extend help with business rates and deliver a fair deal on energy costs are needed to save the future of the UK’s pubs. CAMRA members in all corners of the UK are contacting their local MP to ask them to support the organisation’s ‘Save Our Pubs’ campaign ahead of the Autumn Statement, which calls on the Chancellor to: • Reduce duty on draught beer and cider – cutting tax on pints in pubs to help them compete with the likes of supermarket alcohol. • Replace business rate relief schemes in England which are due to end next year – with money to do the same in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. • Make sure energy supply and pricing issues are fair for hospitality businesses. • End the ban on take-home draught beer and cider from most pubs and festivals. Speaking about the launch of CAMRA’s Autumn Statement campaign Chairman Nik Antona said: “This really is a make-or-break moment for the future of the nation’s beloved pubs and social clubs, which

are at the heart of community life. In August, the Government’s new alcohol duty system introduced a lower rate of tax charged on draught beer and cider served in pubs, clubs and taprooms. To really protect and promote pubgoing, the Chancellor should reduce draught beer and cider duty further – and give our locals a fighting chance with the likes of supermarket alcohol. The Government should also axe the red tap which bans pubs selling takehome beer and cider from draughtduty containers which is a lifeline, particularly in rural communities. “As customers continue to tighten their belts, licensees, brewers, and cider makers face an uncertain economic future as they don’t know what their business rates or energy bills will look like in the next year. That’s why the licenced trade and consumers will want to see the Chancellor taking action to guarantee a fair deal from energy supplies for hospitality businesses – and crucially to extend help with business rates relief in England beyond April next year and allocate money to do the same in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.”
