Hallam FM launches annual Mission Christmas appeal It’s ‘Mission Christmas’ for Hallam FM as host Big John at Breakfast appeals to listeners and locals to buy one extra gift to help thousands of disadvantaged children in South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. The largest Christmas toy appeal in the UK, Mission Christmas is an annual campaign run by charity Cash for Kids and
supported by Hallam FM. In 2022 Mission Christmas collected £14.1 million in gifts and cash donations, which was used to make sure that 286,073 children and young people had presents to open on Christmas Day. Locally, this meant that 18,000 in the South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire area were able to open a gift on the big day.

Due to the cost-of-living crisis, the charity is anticipating high levels of demand for support. Big John at Breakfast said: ‘Our community have always been so amazingly generous when it comes to Mission Christmas, and so if you can, please just buy one extra gift this year and we’ll make sure that it goes to a child who truly deserves it. Every child should feel the excitement of waking up to presents on Christmas morning and that’s why we want to help out Santa by making sure that even more young people in our area can be given some
Christmas cheer this year.’ Supporters of the campaign can take their gifts to a number of drop-off points near them, including local Wickes stores. Simply head to www.hallamfm.co.uk/ mission and enter your postcode to find the dropoff point closest to you. Supporters can also buy a gift online which will be delivered directly to the purchaser’s nearest Mission HQ for no delivery fee. Just head to www. cashforkidsgive.co.uk/ donate/mission-christmas2023-south-yorks-derbysgift-list/ to browse the gift list. Alternatively, you can text ‘CHILD’ to 70910 to donate £10 and the Cash for Kids team will buy a gift on your behalf.
Cash for Kids works with thousands of grass-root organisations across the UK who support disadvantaged children (0 – 18 years). Throughout the Mission Christmas campaign, these organisations along with social workers, head teachers and the emergency services nominate families in crisis to be supported by the appeal. Exciting plans to transform one of the most historic parts of Sheffield city centre has moved a step closer with the appointment of the lead contractor. Keltbray is one of the UK’s leading specialist engineering and earlystage construction providers and will deliver the project regenerating the former Castle Market site into an exciting public space complete with revealing part of Sheffield’s medieval Castle, a new events area, the opening up of the River Sheaf and new public art that will interpret the history of the site. The plans will also shine new light on the Castle itself. Dating back to the 12th century it is the birthplace of Sheffield, with the new public space showcasing aspects of the castle for the first time in centuries. Remains including the Gatehouse will be revealed and put on display for the public to appreciate and admire. Other nods to the history of the castle area will include an events space, reminiscent of the ‘bowling green’ believed to have occupied the site in the 17th century. The events square will be able to host up to 500 people at a range of events. Planting will also have echoes of the Castle’s past with tree species known to have been around at the time being used. The river Sheaf will be opened and visible for the first time in the city centre since the Victorian times. Innovative public art will also be used to interpret the heritage and celebrate the history of the area from the original castle, through the industrial revolution to the Castle Market. Councillor Ben Miskell said: “Seeing this amazing project move closer to becoming a reality is incredibly exciting and will mean that we will be

The Snowdrop Project, a Sheffield-based charity which supports and empowers survivors of human trafficking and modern slavery, were visited by Their Royal Highnesses, The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester on 10th November. The Duke is the late Queen Elizabeth II’s cousin, and both The Duke and Duchess are full-time working members of the Royal Family. The Duke and Duchess visited Snowdrop’s offices in the centre of Sheffield to learn about modern slavery, the work the charity does and the recovery journey for survivors of human trafficking and exploitation. During their visit, The Duke and Duchess learnt about the different forms of support that Snowdrop provides for survivors, including casework, counselling and community activities. Their Royal Highnesses also witnessed the impact of Snowdrop’s work first-hand, as they met and spent time with some of the charity’s service users. The Duke and Duchess also learnt about changes to the support which Snowdrop provides. The charity recently made the decision to expand their support services and lower their referral age from 18 to 16 years old, so that vulnerable
young people who have been exploited can be supported as they transition into adulthood. By lowering the referral age to 16, Snowdrop aims to build trusting relationships with young people over the course of two years. Upon turning 18, these young people will continue to access support from Snowdrop to help them safely transition into adult support services. Rachel Medina, CEO of the Snowdrop Project, said: “We were delighted to host The Duke and Duchess at the Snowdrop Project. Their Royal Highnesses showed a real interest in the work we do, and were keen to learn more about modern slavery in the UK, including how survivors can best be supported to recover from their experiences.” The Snowdrop Project provides long-term, holistic support to empower survivors of human trafficking and modern slavery to recover from their experiences of exploitation. Through casework support, befriending, counselling, community activities and house renovations, the Snowdrop Project enables survivors to build brighter, stable futures. Last year, Snowdrop supported 160 survivors and 85 children through their recovery journeys.

able to see the remains of the castle which kick started Sheffield. The appointment of Keltbray as our contractor is a vital step in bringing this project to life and I cannot wait to see the transformation happen over the coming months. Its yet another sign that Sheffield city centre is on the up. Once complete it will be an incredible public space bringing together the history of our city along with modern public spaces for the people of Sheffield and beyond to enjoy.” Transformation of the site, once home to centuries of market trading, is expected to begin in the opening weeks of 2024 after plans were approved by the City Council back in May 2023 with completion due by the summer of 2025. Vip Gandhi, Keltbray Highways Managing Director said: “We are delighted to continue our relationship with Sheffield City Council on the impressive Castlegate project. Together, we have the opportunity to deliver an exciting scheme to regenerate the site, providing new public spaces, whilst preserving an area of rich historical heritage.” The project is being funded by the UK Government/Levelling Up Fund, South Yorkshire Metropolitan Combined Authority, Environment Agency and Sheffield City Council.

Black Friday/Cyber Monday is one of the biggest shopping events in the calendar worldwide, and with a rise in online shoppers hunting for a bargain before Christmas comes increased opportunities for cybercriminals. Personal finance experts are warning shoppers who rush to grab the best deals to be extra vigilant of circulating scams that appear year on year. Michael Dinich says,“Fraudsters are becoming increasingly clever as technology evolves, and during this busy shopping period, it provides the perfect opportunities to exploit the increased volume of transactions. Most of the time, a cybercriminal’s motive is to steal a customer’s money, or personal information such as bank details, login credentials, personal address. Shoppers should take steps to secure their online activities. Below we share 10 of the most common Black Friday/Cyber Monday scams that catch shoppers out and how to spot them ahead of the big weekend. 1. Incorrect bank details scam One of the most common is scammers emailing shoppers to say their billing information is incorrect, and that it needs changing immediately or the order will be void. If a retailer asks you to change your bank details with urgency and claims there is a risk of losing out on an order you have made, then you should be suspicious. Essentially,
they are hoping to draw you into entering your bank details into a fake website that they have made to look real. You should contact the retailer directly so you can receive legitimate information on your account. 2. Hot deal scam While Black Friday weekend is full of hot deals, certain popular items are advertised on fake websites that are generally hard to find. These items turn out to be illegitimate and it will result in you paying for a product you will never receive- and the scammer now possesses your payment details. 3. Phishing emails Phishing emails are designed to trick users into disclosing sensitive confidential information. Therefore, it is important to not click on any links or pop-ups from sources that you are not familiar with. This also applies to website, including suspect URLs (ones with no ‘https.’ or locked padlock symbol on the bar) and websites with poor design. 4. Fake tracking number scam Fraudsters are sending fake package tracking notifications as an email attachment or link. Scammers use these tactics to infect your device with malware or direct you to phishing sites. Legitimate retailers will never send tracking numbers via an attachment. Always visit the seller’s site to get accurate tracking information for your order.

Instant messages Often, you may receive a suspicious-looking message with a link to a well-known website, urging you to click to secure a great deal. Scammers will replicate the retailer website’s URLs and layouts, which makes it extremely hard to spot whether it is fraudulent or not. However, majority of the time the link is fake, and clicking on it will invite an intrusion of malware on your device. Before clicking on a so-called deal, go direct to the retailer’s official online website to see if that same deal is there. 6. Fake charity scam Especially during the Christmas season there will be a surge in charity donations, and scammers are aware of this. Therefore, they set up fake charities and use high-pressure tactics to get you to donate. You can check if a charity is legitimate through the Fundraising Regulator’s online directory. 7. Fake social media profiles Social media profiles are simple to impersonate, as all a scammer must do is copy their logo, branding, hashtags, and content etc. You can often spot if a social media website is fake through its aggressive advertising campaigns. Always check if there is an alternative
social media account which is verified. 8. Fake product reviews It is in fact humans that are promoting these in exchange for payment from the product manufacturer. Therefore, if you want to get a more accurate review of a product, compare reviews of the same product on several other official retailers before you purchase. 9. ‘Grey Market’ distribution When a product falls out of a brand’s authorized network, they will no longer have control. When this happens, unauthorized sellers may not properly display, package, handle, or ship the correctly. Therefore, returning or exchanging the product will be a lot more difficult. 10. Gift card and discount scams Scammers will offer gift cards at a discount, but these cards are either empty or stolen. You should only buy gift cards from reputable sources, such as the retailer’s official store or online website. Similarly, discounts and coupons received via email or social media that are advertised as huge discounts, can also be void. Therefore, verify the source of the coupon to ensure its valid before using it.

Government agenda lacks action Campaigning organisation CAMRA has issued a statement in reaction to last week’s King’s Speech, voicing their disappoinment that there was no reference made regarding help for the pub and brewing sectors. Commenting on the King’s Speech, CAMRA Chairman Nik Antona said: “It is disappointing that the Government’s agenda for the coming parliamentary session makes no reference to supporting pubs, brewers, or the wider hospitality industry. “Earlier this year, in light of the tragic case of the Crooked House in Himley, CAMRA published data showing that potentially unlawful pub demolitions and conversions continue to take place. “The King’s Speech was an opportunity for the Government to make a firm commitment to pub protection and announce legislation
to bolster the planning enforcement tools available to local authorities to deter unscrupulous developers from flouting planning rules. “Unfortunately, we are still uncertain about whether the Government will act, and they have already ruled out making legislative changes to the Pubs Code, to better balance the relationship between pub companies and their tenants, and to improve consumer choice in the tied
Ambition to boost Sheffield pub estate. Looking ahead to the Autumn Statement, we hope that the visitor economy Chancellor will take urgent action
on energy supply and pricing issues, business rates relief and cutting red tape preventing draught takeaway sales from taking place. We urge anyone who agrees with us to email their MP using our simple e-lobbying tool at https://camra.eactivist.com/page/137207/action/1.”
Sheffield City Council has adopted a new strategy to help make the city a leading destination for visitors across Europe, boosting the local economy and opportunities for Sheffield residents and businesses. Tourism in the city already makes a significant contribution to the wider local economy. In 2022, visitor spending brought in an estimated £1.35 billion for the city and supported 13,285 full-time jobs in Sheffield. The new Destination Management Plan (DMP), adopted by the Council’s Economic Development and Skills Committee on Wednesday 8 October 2023, aims to provide a framework to bring in more visitors to the city for the benefit of local people and businesses. Councillor Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Development and Skills
Committee, said: “It’s great to see the Sheffield adopting a strategic plan to grow tourism and support the visitor economy. “It will help fill more hotel rooms, sell more cups of coffee, fill more restaurants and see more money spent with local businesses. “We have an ambitious plan and look forward to working with partners across Sheffield to deliver it.” To achieve these ambitions, the DMP – led by Marketing Sheffield – will focus on setting out a strategy to make Sheffield a world-class destination for visitors. The strategy has five key objectives, including developing Sheffield’s city breaks offer, growing the conferences market and diversifying and strengthening the city-wide events programme. Events will play a key role in the strategy, with the Council also supporting the development of a new Major Events Plan that will inform bidding for and hosting events going forward. With the UK events sector being
worth an estimated £42.3 billion in 2022, the Council wants to ensure Sheffield is well positioned to take advantage of the economic benefits that events bring. They also hope to boost the number of major conferences held in the city, with these being associated with an estimated spend of £141.8m at local venues in 2019. The Committee also heard from Marketing Sheffield about some of their recent campaigns to grow the visitor economy, including ‘Your University City’, a collaboration with both universities to attract 16–19year-olds to choose Sheffield as their university destination. They also heard about the ‘City Breaks’ campaign, which targeted potential visitors from London, Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham and promoted Sheffield’s music, culture, outdoors and opportunities for extended business trips. Since the campaigns have been running, website visits have increased from an average 2,000 per day to 8,000 per day – around 2.9 million visitors per year.

St Agnes Fountain have been called THE Christmas band for their constantly evolving take on old carols as well as the wealth of new seasonal music they bring each year to their sell-out shows. Since their first get together, to record the eponymous St Agnes Fountain album in 2001, the quartet; David Hughes, Fairport Convention’s Chris Leslie and multi award winning duo Chris While and Julie Matthews, have brought musical invention and laughter to the star-dust atmosphere of the season. In 2020, David decided to leave the band and very sadly died earlier this year. There will never been another quite like him, he was simply a one off. One thing we can say without any doubt is that David wouldn’t have wanted to rest in peace, he would want to be putting on his fedora, tapping his foot out to some insane syncopated rhythm and leading us all in a celebration of a life of love, laughter and mirth. Chris, Chris and Julie intend to do just that, keeping the Christmas Aggie spirit alive and touring as a trio celebrating 23 years together with some new material, those old Aggie classics and a doff of the fedora to David.

The Upbeat Beatles are second to none - powerhouse vocals, precision harmonies and tight musicianship. The guys have an easy, happy rapport with any crowd, giving them a reputation to be envied as the best in the business. There isn’t a band to touch them - 8 bars of “Twist and Shout” and you will know why! No other band can perform this song like The Upbeat Beatles! The show takes you through the Fab Four’s long and winding road from the early Cavern days through Beatlemania, America, Sergeant Pepper to Abbey Road, with narrative and full multi-media presentation. BLADES ON THE UP AFTER BATTLING POINT AT BRIGHTON United recovered from going a goal down to record a notable point on the road after a 1-1 draw against Brighton and Hove Albion. After going behind to Simon Adingra’s well-worked early goal, the game was turned on its head with 20 minutes remaining when Mahmoud Dahoud was given his marching orders after a challenge on Ben Osborn. United seized the chance, levelling when Jayden Bogle’s centre was turned into his own net by Adam Webster to earn a share of the spoils. United made one change to the starting 11 following last weekend’s victory over Wolves. Boss
Paul Heckingbottom recalled James McAtee to the side to replace the injured Rhian Brewster, after the former impressed from the bench in United’s success at Bramall Lane last Saturday. There was also a return for Max Lowe who was named in a matchday squad for the first time since the clash with Nottingham Forest back in August. It was United who had the first half chance of the game when Jan Paul van Hecke’s attempted pass out of defence was cut out by the head of Gustavo Hamer, but he could only direct a difficult chance over the bar. On four minutes, Brighton
tested Wes Foderingham when Ansu Fati burst through, getting a low shot away despite the close attentions of Auston Trutsy, which the Blades stopper held low down. Two minutes later and Brighton opened the scoring. After being found out wide, ADINGRA set off on a mazy run from the left, playing a clever one-two with Facundo Buonanotte just inside the area, before sliding the ball beyond Foderingham. Foderingham was called into action again on 14 minutes when a clever turn and pass by Adam Lallana set Fati through, but under pressure his low effort was blocked by the United custodian.
Brighton dominated possession but had to wait until the half hour mark for the next chance. A ball into the area was cleared against Buonanotte by Jack Robinson, but the Brighton marksman fired wide of the near post after the ball fell kindly for him. Before half-time Bogle saw yellow and Billy Gilmour had an effort tipped over, whilst Buonanotte was also carded for stopping a United counter. Deep into added time a United corner caused a brief alarm inside the Albion area, the loose ball was then fired over by Luke Thomas from the edge of the box. Brighton brought on Joao
Pedro and Kaoru Mitoma at half-time, with the former firing over just inside the area. United made a first change on 52 minutes with Osborn replacing Vini Souza who picked up a knock to his back in the first-half. On 57 minutes some neat interplay by the Blades around the edge of the Brighton area ended with a teasing low cross from George Baldock which rolled dangerously across the six-yard box. The hosts enjoyed a flurry of opportunities around the hour mark with van Hecke heading over, Mitoma seeing a shot at the near post saved by Foderingham, and
the Blades stopper was there again to push away Mahmoud Dahoud’s longrange effort. At the other end a burst from Cameron Archer saw the striker pull the ball back towards McAtee but Brighton got bodies around the ball to snuff out the chance. Thomas went into the book for a late challenge and soon after Brighton were reduced to 10 men. Dahoud inexplicably stamped down on Osborn who was on the floor following a clean challenge, and the referee John Brooks had no hesitation to show the red. On 74 minutes United levelled. Trusty pushed the ball to Hamer who
players who are believing and are capable than better of that in those moments. “In the second half, with us chasing the game and the bodies we had left on the pitch was brutal to watch. “It wasn’t as if it was like some of our away games where there was
just constant pressure with Viktor making save after save. The game was going on and we were a goal down. The it went on again and we were 2-0 down. Then you have to chase the match and you open up the space against a good attacking team. “Sam Clucas has a hamstring [problem], so does Cafu and so does Daniel Ayala. You couldn’t write it.”
IT QUICKLY GOT AWAY FROM US - TAYLOR Rotherham United boss Matt Taylor conceded that his side let the game against Watford ‘get away from them quickly’ after a competitive start at Vicarage Road. The hosts took an early lead through Mileta Rajovic but the Millers continued to battle for
a way back into the game, only to be dealt a further blow when the same player doubled the home advantage. As Taylor’s men went in search of goals to get them back into the contest, the Hornets made the most of the additional space that opened up for them on
the pitch and inflicted further damage, in the end resulting in a convincing scoreline by their name come fulltime. Speaking after the match, Taylor said: “First half we were in the game but nowhere near it in terms of the goals we conceded. “Poor individual
moments really cost us but we had the right bodies on the pitch. “The second half unravelled and we found ourselves 2-0 down and had to chase the game. “The manner in which the goals went in and the scoreline was unforgivable. “That is a group of
‘worst performance of the season’
“It wasn’t good enough,” McCann said. “Nowhere near where we’ve been. We deservedly got beat. There was no energy, no threat and no aggression about us. I don’t think their goalkeeper made a save all day. It was a tough one for us to take. They were better than us on the day and we can have no complaints. “The start of the game wasn’t great and we gave them chances early on with sloppy and under-hit
passes. Maybe it swung that way. “I do think the first goal was a free kick on George Broadbent at the front post but it didn’t go our way and we conceded off the second phase, which was a mistake as we let the runner go. “In the second half, it was another mistake - not a great header inside from Owen Bailey and a slip from Tom Anderson and all of a sudden it’s in the back of our net. “For me, I didn’t smell it at all. I could just see it. “I said to the lads at half time that we need to find something from within because we didn’t seem like we’d got anything in us. They’ve been excellent
for maybe two months but that for me was maybe the worst performance of the season. I don’t think we threatened their goalkeeper. “I know we’ve had some poor performances, like at Newport away, but in front of 700 fans, we gave them nothing and I don’t think their keeper had a save to make. “We didn’t deserve anything and there’s no point in saying that we did. We had some semi half chances but when we got to the final third our crosses were poor and we didn’t get on the end of anything. We were way away from what we’ve shown over the last few months.”
Frustrated Grant McCann said he did not recognise his Rovers side in the 2-0 defeat at AFC Wimbledon. Rovers struggled for attacking fluency throughout at the Cherry Red Records Stadium and fell to two goals from Ali Al Hamidi.

slipped a pass in behind for Bogle who, after controlling, fired across the area where WEBSTER directed the ball beyond Steele. Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi was then booked before the restart. Sub Carlos Baleba also saw yellow after a trip on McAtee. With 15 minutes remaining United created another chance when good work from McAtee and Archer teed up a shot for Bogle which he
dragged wide. The Blades, pushing for the win, saw a Norwood shot blocked and Thomas fizzed an effort over the bar. Anis Slimane replaced McAtee for the closing stages, whilst Robinson saw yellow for a late challenge. United looked the more likely but had to settle for a deserved point in the end after the hosts saw out six minutes of added time.
We have to look forward Danny Röhl said his side deserved the defeat at the hands of Millwall following the 4-0 reverse at Hillsborough. The Owls manager added the players did not perform with the level of intensity of the recent clutch of games – and paid the price: “The intensity we have to play at was not there today and we cannot afford for that to happen. Millwall played well and I take nothing away from them but we were below the level today. “They seemed to have two chances to score one goal and we had more chances and still did not score. “But we have to look forward, it is one game, and we have to be better than that. We have a lot of games to go, we will get back to work in the
international break. “It has come at a good time for the work but as a manager I would prefer to be straight back out there and play the next game.” On a brighter note, Röhl was pleased with the introduction of Bailey Cadamarteri, who made his league debut for the second half. He also explained the absence of striker Michael Smith: “Michael had a muscle injury and we will see how he is before the next game. The break has come at a good time for him so hopefully he will be recovered. “With Bailey, I was really pleased with him. He has been in training with us with the intention of him playing and he looked sharp and dangerous, he got into some good positions.”
