SHEFFIELD AWARDED MORE THAN £19M FOR LEVELLING UP PLANS Sheffield City Council’s exciting plans for Parkwood Springs have been awarded more than £19million as part of the latest round of investment from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund. The plans will see Parkwood Springs, which has been under utilised for more than a decade, transformed – further enhancing the Council’s ambition to create a Country Park in the city. The award from central Government will pave the way for a regional leisure destination and a valued amenity for
Sheffield residents – especially those living in communities close to Parkwood Springs. Cllr Ben Miskell said: “Sheffield is a city on the up and we’re looking forward to starting work on an exciting £19million transformative regeneration to create a Country Park at Parkwood Springs These plans will open up access to the site, an obstacle that previously prevented developers from bringing forward plans for the redevelopment of the former Ski Village. We recognised that Parkwood Springs
needed a new lease of life and have continued to push for the funding to support our ambition and to deliver for the city. Sheffield is the Outdoor City and our plans will turn Parkwood springs into a regional leisure destination that we can be proud of.” Now the funding has been awarded for the project it will mean a number of key areas will be able to be delivered including: Access to the site would be improved for all, with particular focus on increasing active travel and public transport. It will also see improved
approaches to the site with ‘Grey to Green’ type investment used elsewhere in the city. The area of the former ski slope would be prepared for future development as a regional leisure destination with all derelict remains from the previous ski slope removed. The new funding will be used to deliver new and upgraded existing walking paths and mountain bike trails. We will also be able to extend the area of the site which can be accessed and make the whole site more accessible to
people of all ages and abilities. A new visitor centre and bike hub along with information boards, event space and improved boundaries will allow Parkwood Springs to strengthen the appeal as a destination in its own right. Cllr Miskell added: “This project will be able to breathe new life into the landscape and return it to the people of Sheffield. There is still work to be done, but the people of Sheffield will be able to see the area come to life once again.”

The National Trust has collaborated with BAFTA® award-winning production studio, Aardman, and global art producer, Wild in Art, to bring one of Aardman’s best loved characters to Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire this winter. Until 7 January, twelve uniquely designed sculptures of Shaun the Sheep are positioned at iconic locations across Clumber for Shaun the Sheep: Find the Flock at Clumber Park, a free, family-friendly art trail for visitors to follow. Each super-sized sculpture, standing at 160cm tall, has been individually designed by artists from across the region and beyond. Shaun the Sheep: Find the Flock at Clumber Park continues Wild in Art’s mission to take art out of the gallery, making it free and accessible to all. The trail is a glorious celebration of everything visitors love about Clumber as the wintery season is brought to life with bursts of colour, inspired by the much-loved star of film and television, Shaun the Sheep. CELEBRATIONS AS Sheffield’S National Videogame Museum turns 5! The National Videogame Museum (NVM) is celebrating five years since its Sheffield launch with a day of celebrations. Everyone visiting on the fifth anniversary, Friday 24th of November 2023, can book discounted tickets and experience a celebration of the history and culture of videogames, with over 100 interactive exhibits and hands-on creative activities from their award winning Learning Team. The Museum’s anniversary year has been its busiest to date, welcoming over 50,000 visitors to the Castle House venue (of which
70% are from outside of the city region) and establishing NVM as a unique Sheffield attraction. The museum is a Charity (governed by the BGI) and exists to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret videogames for everyone. Like many cultural organisations it survived the pandemic through support from the Arts Council England Culture Recovery Fund, plus support from patrons in the videogame industry and a community fundraiser. The Museum will be open 1pm - 4pm on Friday 24th November for its 5th Birthday.
Under the new joint CEO leadership of Creative Director, John O’Shea, and Director of Visitor Experience, Cat Powell, the last year has seen a refocus on the Museum’s ambition to expand its work with diverse and underrepresented communities; reflect on the relevance of videogames across society, and advocate for greater access to careers in the videogame industry. At the half decade mark, the Museum is reflecting on achievements with its community, and looking forward to the future, as a success story for Sheffield.
The Museum is dedicated to transforming lives with videogames: Initiatives during 2023 have ranged from pop up exhibitions around South Yorkshire, to exploring stories of sanctuary-seeking communities through the art of game making; and creating a fair for celebrating careers in videogames. NVM is now working towards Museum Accreditation - Arts Council England’s National benchmark for museum standards - a process which sees its expert team cataloguing over 5,000 videogame objects
and cultural artefacts. The vital work aims to establish the Museum as the leading organisation for videogame culture - and builds the foundations for researchers, publishers, games developers, and the public to engage with this unique collection in new and exciting ways. carbon monoxide warning older people in poverty SHEFFIELD HOSPITALS This Carbon Monoxide Week, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has issued a stark warning to be aware of the dangers of the silent killer that causes over 4000 A&E visits and 440 hospital admissions a year in England alone. According to RoSPA, carbon monoxide poisoning is an underdiagnosed problem in the UK, with the signs and symptoms of lowlevel carbon monoxide toxicity confused for other ailments like headache, nausea, flushing, the flu, muscle pain, food poisoning and depression. Poisoning is more prevalent in the winter months, related to the increased indoor use of heating and other devices which are common sources of carbon monoxide, such as incorrectly installed fuel-burning appliances, blocked chimneys, gas ovens inappropriately used for heating, and barbecues or gas stoves used in enclosed spaces. What to do if you are exposed to carbon monoxide If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds or you believe there to be a leak (unignited gas does not contain carbon monoxide): • stop using all appliances and evacuate the property immediately • call the relevant National Gas Emergency Service number to report the incident • do not go back into the property • get immediate medical help. If you think you have been exposed to carbon monoxide and feel unwell or are worried call NHS

A recent survey conducted by Halton Stairlifts of 2,500 individuals in this age bracket has shed light on the distressing challenges they face in affording basic necessities. The Soaring Cost of Essentials The survey reveals a troubling trend: the quality of life for those over 40 is diminishing rapidly due to the skyrocketing cost of living, which has nearly tripled in recent times. This increase has had a profound impact on their ability to purchase essential items. Food Quality Takes a Hit One of the most concerning findings is the significant decline in food quality. Approximately 78% of respondents reported that they can no longer afford the quality of food they used to. This isn’t about cutting back on luxuries; it’s about a drastic shift to lower-quality, often less nutritious options. The choices they are forced to make aren’t just about
taste or preference but about stretching their increasingly limited budgets. Transport : A Secondary Concern Transport, once a basic necessity, has now become a luxury for many in this age group. About 65% of those surveyed indicated transportation: With the rise in fuel prices, many are finding it difficult to afford commuting costs or are forced to give up their vehicles Beyond Food and Transport: The Wider Impact But the crisis doesn’t stop at food and clothing. It extends to other essential areas such as: Utilities: Increasing utility bills mean tougher choices between essentials like heating or cooling homes and other expenses. 39% said they still haven’t put their heating on. Clothing: Once a basic necessity, has now become a luxury for many in this age group. Of those surveyed 28 % indicated that they’ve had to cut back severely on purchasing new clothes. This trend speaks volumes about the financial strain they face, prioritising necessities like housing and food over apparel.

Family pub chain Hungry Horse is launching its Christmas toy donation initiative for a third consecutive year – following new research that reveals over two million UK children could go without a single present this Christmas. The scheme, which saw more than 10,000 presents donated in 2022, is designed to provide gifts to those in need while helping parents declutter their homes by putting preloved toys to good use. Hungry Horse has relaunched its annual ‘Toy Boxing Day’ scheme, installing an enormous four metre high, 450kg sack of presents in Manchester city centre to represent the millions of children
who are facing the prospect of going without a gift this year. Donation stations will be open in each of the 235 Hungry Horse pubs across the UK between 14 November and 18 December 2023 to ensure any donated toys arrive with the children who need them most in time for the big day. To get involved, all anyone who wants to donate has to do is head to their local Hungry Horse pub and drop any preloved, new or unused toys in the signposted area in pub. Pubs will then supply the donated toys to a nominated local charity, which will provide them to those in need within the community during the lead up to Christmas.

Phil Le Shirley, Public Safety Advisor at RoSPA said: “With the colder months almost upon us and more people using fuel-burning appliances, it’s vital to be aware that carbon monoxide poisoning is silent and can often be confused with other ailments like a headache, nausea, flushing, the flu, muscle pain, food poisoning and depression. Carbon monoxide is colourless, tasteless and odourless, so it is essential that you fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm that meets British or European Standards (BS Kitemark or EN 50291). We recommend testing the alarm at least once a week, changing the batteries regularly and replacing the whole alarm before its expiration date. Finally, if you’re camping or caravanning, irrespective of how cold or rainy it gets, ensure that there is adequate ventilation when using fuel-burning products and always have a carbon monoxide alarm with you.” Phil went on to describe what you should do: “We recommend only using a qualified Gas Safe engineer to install gas boilers and appliances and advise that they are serviced annually by Gas Safe approved technicians. Solid fuel appliances should be installed and serviced annually by a qualified HETAS engineer, and chimneys and flues should be kept clean by being swept from top to bottom at least once a year by a qualified chimney sweep and should not be blocked.

RECEIVE FUNDING FOR LONG TERM CONDITIONS Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has received £3m from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to establish a new national HealthTech Research Centre to develop innovative health technologies for people with long-term conditions. The new Centre, which will be known as the NIHR Devices for Dignity HealthTech Research Centre, forms part of a wider Government investment which will see the establishment of 14 HealthTech Research Centres across England from 1 April 2024. The new HealthTech Research Centres will replace the successful NIHR Medtech and In Vitro Diagnostic Co-operatives (MIC), which come to an end in March 2024. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals led the development of one of the first MICs called Devices for Dignity 15 years ago. The new HealthTech Research Centre will build on the success of Devices for Dignity which has been hugely successful acting as a catalyst within the NHS for the development of new medical devices and healthcare technologies to support patients with long-term conditions and particularly with issues relating to loss of dignity and independence.
The new Centre will be a partnership with the city’s universities and institutions across the country including universities and NHS Trusts in Cambridge, Coventry, Leeds, London, Manchester and Rotherham and Doncaster as well as industry, healthcare professionals, patient groups and the public to identify unmet needs, generate evidence and accelerate new technologies into clinical practice. The five-year funding will support the development of technologies in long-term neurological conditions, diabetes, kidney care and rehabilitation. The NIHR Devices for Dignity HealthTech Research Centre will also have a key national role in developing technologies to improve women’s health and will address the mental health aspects which may accompany long-term health conditions. council’s visitor plans Sheffield City Council has adopted a new strategy to help make the city a leading destination for visitors across Europe, boosting the local economy and opportunities for Sheffield residents and businesses. Tourism in the city already makes a significant contribution to the wider local economy. In 2022, visitor spending brought in an estimated £1.35 billion for the city and supported 13,285 full-time jobs in Sheffield. The new Destination Management Plan (DMP), aims to provide a framework to bring in more visitors to the city for the benefit of local people and businesses. Councillor Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Development and Skills Committee, said: “It’s great to see the Sheffield adopting a strategic plan to grow tourism and support the visitor economy. It will help fill more hotel rooms, sell more cups of coffee, fill more restaurants and see more money spent with local businesses. We have an ambitious plan and look forward to working with partners across Sheffield to deliver it.” To achieve these ambitions, the DMP
will focus on setting out a strategy to make Sheffield a world-class destination for visitors. The strategy has five key objectives, including developing Sheffield’s city breaks offer, growing the conferences market and diversifying and strengthening the citywide events programme. Events will play a key role in the strategy, with the Council also supporting the development of a new Major Events Plan that will inform bidding for and hosting events going forward. With the UK events sector being worth an estimated £42.3 billion in 2022, the Council wants to ensure Sheffield is well positioned to take advantage of the economic benefits that events bring. They also hope to boost the number of major conferences held in the city, with these being associated with an estimated spend of £141.8m at local venues in 2019. The Committee also heard from Marketing Sheffield about ‘Your University City’, a collaboration with both universities to attract 16–19-year-olds to choose Sheffield as their university destination.

DONCASTER TURNED IN TO THE FESTIVE CITY Doncaster City Centre will transform itself into a festive city this Christmas, with a whole host of activities, events and festivities taking place this November and December. From Penguin Parades to a Frost Festival – to the Doncaster Festival of Light, Christmas decorations and the annual panto – there is plenty to welcome locals and tourists alike to the city. St Agnes Fountain have been called THE Christmas band for their constantly evolving take on old carols as well as the wealth of new seasonal music they bring each year to their sell-out shows. Since their first get together, to record the eponymous St Agnes Fountain album in 2001, the quartet; David Hughes, Fairport Convention’s Chris Leslie and multi award winning duo Chris While and Julie Matthews, have brought musical invention and laughter to the star-dust atmosphere of the season. In 2020, David decided to leave the band and very sadly died earlier this year. There will never been another quite like him, he was simply a one off. SHEFFIELD FC UNVEIL NEW STADIUM PLANS The world’s oldest football club has unveiled plans for a 5,000 seat stadium as part of a new sports centre. Sheffield FC said the site at the former Sheffield Transport Sports Club site in Meadowhead, would also include a cricket ground, a football museum and an indoor community sports hall. The facility would be shared with the Sheffield Eagles rugby league team. Founded in 1857, the football club currently plays its home games
in Dronfield, in north Derbyshire.
