Don’t let car thieves steal Christmas ECO SOFAS Christmas is a time for communities to support each other and come together, but for some, it is an opportunity to steal and ruin the festive cheer. Roads Policing Officers are warning drivers, including those that deliver parcels, to be extra vigilant in the run up to Christmas, as unfortunately we often see an increase of car thefts and opportunist thieves trying their luck at this time of year. Delivery drivers are being urged to remember that car thieves are watching, and

they will take their chance to steal your vehicle and parcels. Also, as the mornings become colder, we also see an increase of cars with their engines running on driveways while windscreens clear from ice and snow; criminals will take this opportunity to steal your car. Roads Policing Inspector Matt Collings tells us more. He said: “Sadly, Christmas is a time when thieves take advantage of people. As temperatures have recently dropped to below

0 degrees, many of us will have spent our mornings de-icing our cars before work or the school run. Unfortunately, we have already received quite a few reports of car thefts this week due to cars being left running on driveways and on the road. It is important to lock your car every time you get out of it. Do not leave your car running for any reason, even on your own driveway. “If officers see a car engine running without a driver inside, we can report you to your insurance company or

issue you with a fine. “We don’t want to issue anyone with a ticket for something that can be avoided, but we must take action. Thieves that steal cars pose a risk to our communities. Stolen cars are more likely to be used in further crimes, and will often be driven dangerously with the drivers taking extra risks, including failing to stop for officers. This creates risks for other drivers on the road and pedestrians, and gives thieves the opportunity to commit crimes and impact

on people’s lives. We can all take simple steps to avoid this happening, so please lock your doors, for everyone’s safety.” Please be vigilant and remember to lock your car, never leave your car unattended and remove all personal items when leaving your car. More about car safety can be found on the PoliceUK website. If you suspect someone is following you or acting suspiciously please call 101 or use our online portal, or call 999 in an emergency.

SHEFFIELD INDIE LEGENDS MILBURN REUNITE TO HEADLINE ROCK N ROLL CIRCUS Preparing for its second year, Rock N Roll Circus Sheffield is cranking up the volume with a further line up announcement. Sheffield indie gods Milburn are set to perform their first show on native soil in years, with a special one off return to Don Valley, much to the delight of their legion of loyal followers. They will headline the Saturday 31st August leg of the four-day event, following the news that pop queen Becky Hill and friends will take to the stage on Friday 30th August. Setting the stage for a musical celebration that’s as diverse as it is

electrifying, Yorkshire’s finest Milburn have handpicked the lineup themselves and will be joined on the Saturday themed circus gathering by ‘Lighting Bolt’ star Jake Bugg, ska pioneers The Selecter, indie rock commandos The Rifles, the beat architect himself Seb Lowe, and the ethereal songbird that is Gia Ford. Milburn frontman Joe Carnall, said: “Don Valley has a special place in our hearts and to return at the top of a bill which has so many great artists on it, is an honour. “Last time we performed

at Don Valley it was really wet, so we’re chuffed that we’ve got a big top to play in this time. But not even the great British weather can stop this being the crowning glory for a band who have a place in so many people’s hearts. Roll up, roll up!” Milburn - The Sonic Surgeons of Sheffield! Hailing from Sheffield itself, Milburn have always kept their powder dry when it came to both touring and recording. Unconventionally they have chosen carefully when to perform, making the atmosphere at the live shows electrifying,

especially when on home ground. Their previous sell out show at Don Valley was six years ago and is now part of South Yorkshire folklore. Indie fans at Rock N Roll Circus last summer were treated to a memorable performance by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and anticipation and hype will no doubt build to boiling point for the 2024 Milburn headlined event. Milburn released their debut album, ‘Well Well Well’ in 2006. Members Joe Carnall (vocals and bass), Louis Carnall (vocals and guitar), Joe Green

(drums), and Tom Rowley (guitar) were all friends who quickly made a name for themselves, selling out venues all over the UK, as well as supporting UK heavyweights Arctic Monkeys. The band released two independent singles, and then scored a deal with Mercury records. Milbrin will be joined by Jake Bugg, Ska pioneers The Selecter , The Rifles and Sheffield based Gia - who performed on the introducing stage at the 2023 Rock N Roll Circus - impressed organisers so much that she will now perform on the mainstage in 2024.

Featuring multiple stages, spectacular aerialists, street food, new and improved VIP areas, beers, cocktails, and much more, Rock N Roll Circus has become a must-attend event for music and entertainment enthusiasts with four days of incredible live music under the big top creating an atmosphere like no other. Tickets for the 4 Day spectacular which previously announced Becky Hill as one of their Headliners are available now from rocknrollcircus.co.uk

6:30 is the best time on a clock. Hands down... What do you call a dog with no legs? It doesn’t matter, it’s not going to come. My friend is giving away free guitars. No strings attached. My doctor told me to take up an activity that gets me out of the pub. So I’ve started smoking. I slept like a baby last night... I spent half the night crying and then soiled myself. My ex texted me, “Wish you were here.” She does that every time she walks through a cemetery. I came home from the pub really drunk last night. As I staggered into the living room and sat down on the sofa my wife looked at me and said, “Can’t you just go out and have a couple of drinks?” “Of course I can,” I replied, standing back up. “Just let me get my coat!” My son didn’t cope well with going to jail. He refused to eat or drink anything. He swore at everyone and covered his room with his own faeces... After that we never played Monopoly again! People criticise shops for selling Christmas stuff too early... Well, our supermarket sells birthday cakes and mine isn’t for another 11 months!

free citywide tickets cats charity partnership avoid mot failures! Whether travelling by bus, tram, or a combination of both, the festive gift means shoppers will be able to leave their cars at home and take public transport into the city centre, to enjoy the Christmas Market and everything else we have on offer in Sheffield throughout the day of travel. The BetterPoints Sheffield app has already been downloaded more than 5,000 times since it launched in September and turns your steps, cycle rides, and public transport trips into shopping vouchers or donations to local charities. In the run up to Christmas, you can now use the points you accumulate in the app towards a free city wide day of public transport travel. The offer is available to new and existing users with just 50 points required to claim the free ticket. Cllr Ben Miskell, Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee said:

The future for homeless cats in Sheffield is looking up thanks to a unique partnership forged between two local animal welfare charities. A celebration to mark the teaming up of the Sheffield & District Branch of Cats Protection and RSPCA Sheffield attracted dignitaries including Clive Betts MP and the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Colin Ross, alongside volunteers and staff from both charities. The partnership sees Cats Protection take on 15 pens at the RSPCA shelter in Attercliffe to use as temporary homes for unwanted cats and kittens. RSPCA staff take care of the welfare of the residents – including feeding, grooming, playing and cleaning out the pens, as well as arranging any vet treatment required. The Sheffield & District Branch of Cats Protection has recently undergone a transformation, with several branches merged under one umbrella. While this has allowed it to grow, an increase in demand for its services across a wider area, coupled with a lack of fosterers, was a barrier to helping more cats. This partnership expands the number of cats it can bring into care, as well as being an opportunity to share experience and expertise. Guests on launch day were treated to a tour of the facilities, with RSPCA Sheffield Chief Executive Dianna Radford showing off the impressive facilities, which cares for dogs, cats and other rescued animals. There was also the chance to see some of the first cats to move into the Cats Protection pens, including Minnie and Tomato. James Nunn, Branch Team Leader for Cats Protection Sheffield & District Branch, said: “This launch marks the start of what will be a long-term partnership between two of Sheffield’s largest

charities supporting cats in the local area. It’s been over a year in the making, and we’re delighted to have been able to bring everyone together to share our plans. This is about much more than just increasing capacity – it will allow us to share expertise and best practice to work together on elements such as fundraising and advocacy, while exploring new, innovative ways to support cat ownership in Sheffield and beyond.” Ms Radford said: “The Sheffield branch of the RSPCA cares for and re-homes cats and dogs from its base in Attercliffe and relies on public donations to finance the running of the centre. This partnership will allow the branch to help cats which come into Cats Protection care and with the support we receive from them we will be able to help more animals. As part of the wider RSPCA, it’s our vision to live in a world where all animals are respected and treated with compassion. Our mission is to prevent cruelty, promote kindness to and alleviate suffering of all animals. We work towards this goal at a local level, helping to support improved animal welfare in the Sheffield area. The year 2024 marks the 200th anniversary of the RSPCA - the world’s oldest animal welfare charity and we will continue our work to change minds, laws, industries and lives to create a better world for animals and people alike. We believe working in partnership with other animal charities like Cats Protection in this way will help us achieve this.” To find out more about the work of Cats Protection in Sheffield visit www.cats. org.uk/sheffield.

A new study reveals the most common reasons cars fail their MOT in the run up to the festive period – with lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment named the biggest problem area. Drivers need to be especially vigilant when monitoring their car this time of year, as almost a third (29%) of cars fail their winter MOT, with an average of 2.5 issues detected. Ranking first as the most common reason for MOT failure was faults in lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment, which comprised over a quarter of total defects found at 26.1%. In second was faulty or broken suspension systems, which encompassed almost a fifth (19.2%) of defects. Failures with suspension were encountered in almost 1 in 10 (9%) tests. Following in third was brake failures, accounting for 15.9% of defects and observed in 6.9% of tests. In fourth was tyre failures, making up 12.3% of defects and present in 6.4% of tests. Rounding out the top five was visibility issues, which includes anything blocking the windscreen or the driver’s eyeline. These made up 7.9% of total defects and were identified in 4.7% of tests. Taking an MOT test in the winter months may seem more daunting than usual, as there’s the added pressure of navigating potentially harsh weather conditions along with typical wear-and-tear. However, there are

precautions you can take to make sure you’re as prepared as possible. As a bare minimum safety measure, ensuring that seatbelts are fitted correctly and can fasten properly is an essential check. As lights are the most common issue, it’s a good idea to make sure that they’re working properly before you take to the road. Functioning lights are really important - especially in the winter months when driving in darkness is a regular occurrence. Testing your breaks is also key – they should be in good condition and responsive. Make sure to inspect the tread depth and overall condition of your tires too, as these are often impacted by the winter weather. Make sure they meet the legal requirements and are free from damage. Good visibility is essential when driving, particularly during winter where adverse weather conditions can cause additional obstructions. Ensure that your mirrors are attached securely and provide a clear view, and check that your wipers are functioning properly. Remember, if your dashboard is displaying any warning lights, you need to identify the issues and resolve them before the test. Regular checks, maintenance and servicing throughout the year can increase your chances of passing an MOT test, so don’t leave everything to the last minute – especially if you’re looking to avoid a big bill just before Christmas!

get your parcel safely!

Packfleet has compiled its 12 tips to make sure Christmas doesn’t arrive late for gift givers and receivers this year. They include tips on packaging, parcel delivery and insider advice on how to get those all important packages delivered where you want, when you want and in one piece this Christmas. Each year thousands of precious gifts get lost or damaged by parcel firms. We don’t want anyone to be disappointed this Christmas so we’ve pulled together our tips to ensure your parcel arrives in time – just make sure there is a spot left under the Christmas tree! Packfleet’s 12 tips for avoiding empty stockings and sad faces on Christmas morning. • Recipient name, flat number, post code – make sure all the delivery details are there to leave no room for disappointment this year! • The same goes for your contact details – like Santa’s list, check them twice. • If it’s an important delivery, pay for the premium option. • List a safe place for parcels to be left (ideally not down the chimney – that’s reserved). • Ask if a neighbour will

accept your parcel. It’s the season of goodwill after all. • Try and group your deliveries into one time window – it’s easier allround. • If you can, use the divert to a safe place option – you don’t want parcels home alone. • Know your delivery date cut-offs. No one wants an empty stocking! • Keep proof of postage and tracking numbers handy. You never know when you’ll need to track down your gift in the North Pole sorting centre! If you are sending parcels use robust packaging – wrapping should only come off on the 25th December. • Know the best before dates when sending food or perishables – too long under the tree and they may, well, perish! • Be nice to your delivery driver – it’s Christmas for them, too. No sherry, but a mince pie will almost always go down well! • Check which delivery company the retailer uses especially if you have concerns about a particular delivery company and would rather not use them.

BAD START FOR THE BLADES AT BURNLEY & IT GET WORSE FROM THERE It was a bitterly disappointing afternoon for the Blades at Turf Moor on Saturday. Burnley opened the scoring after just 14 seconds through Jay Rodriguez and never looked back from that point as Jacob Brunn Larsen added a second before the half hour. Oli McBurnie was sent off for two bookable offences before the break and after the interval Zeki Amdouni, Luca Kolesosho and Josh Brownhill added their names to the scoresheet. United made three

changes for the trip to Lancashire as McBurnie and Ahmedhodžić were named in the starting XI, with Fleck handed his first start in the league this term. But the game got off to the worst imaginable start for the Blades as Burnley took the lead straight from the kick-off. Taylor was afforded too much space on the left and Rodriguez got across Trusty to head home past Foderingham. United’s first foray forward on 13 minutes, saw Hamer send a speculative effort from distance wide. United were seemingly

growing into the game though as Norwood stung the palms of Trafford from 25 yards out after the hosts had only partially cleared Robinson’s long throw into the penalty area. Minutes later though, Baldock went down in obvious discomfort and despite leaving treatment he was duly replaced by Bogle. And as the half hour approached, the Clarets doubled their advantage as Bruun Larsen sprung the offside trap and slotted past Foderingham, from O’Shea’s long ball forward. Archer had an

instant chance to reduce the deficit but fired over after good work by Trusty on the overlap. The first half ended with a flurry of bookings, the last of which saw the Blades reduced to ten men. Fleck was first into referee Kavanagh’s book for a lunge on Brownhill, before McBurnie was carded for catching O’Shea despite being held by Vitinho. O’Shea left his mark on the Scottish striker moments later, before Thomas pulled Brunn Larsen down. But in the first of five minutes of added time,

‘set A huge step Rovers the standard’ forward with Posh performance: McCann Danny Rohl reflected on the impressive win over Blackburn and said his side have taken ‘a huge step forward’. Wednesday scored three goals for the first time this season with a composed and professional performance that yielded three vital points. Rohl said: “This is a huge step forward for us. We have had two tough games in a week against two tough teams and I am very proud of the players. “We have had strategies and game plans, we have done a lot of work, so the players deserve the points we have taken this week. “We played with passion and intensity which is what I want to see every game from my players. I have the fight in me to the end and my demand is for the same from everyone else.” Rohl was full of praise for Bailey Cadamarteri, who scored his first senior goal for the Owls. The S6 product was lively throughout and turned in a vibrant display against Rovers. Rohl said: “I am delighted for Bailey and pleased to have him in the group. “I have said I am the kind of managers who will give the young players a chance. “He has stepped up with the first team, which is why I took him, and to see him get his goal today was special for me and special for him.”

Grant McCann said Rovers set the standard for the rest of the season with the performance at high-flying Peterborough United in the Emirates FA Cup. Rovers gave as good as they got at the Weston Homes Stadium before seeing their FA Cup campaign ended with a 2-1 defeat. Mo Faal pulled a goal back for Rovers with 15 minutes to go, after wrongly seeing another effort ruled out for offside earlier in the half. “For us, what pleased me, is that we went toe to toe with one of the best teams in League One, if not the best,” he said. “I said to the lads in the changing room

McBurnie caught O’Shea again despite winning the header cleanly and a second yellow was quickly brandished. United made a triple change at the break, with McAtee, Osula and Traoré all introduced as Thomas, Fleck and Archer were replaced. The Blades were competitive in the opening exchanges of the second period, although needed Robinson to be alert to the danger to block an effort from Vitinho after he’d combined with Bruun Larsen, as Osula became the latest United player

to be booked following a challenge with Brownhill. Despite the numeric disadvantage United looked to be competitive with ten-men, with Osula beind denied by Trafford after Hamer’s driving run, before heading over after a corner was kept alive. Ahmedhodžić and Hamer were both booked after the former had brought down AMDOUNI, who fired hom a left-footed strike moments later, with Taylor claiming the assist. Kolesosho hit the post after Foderingham had denied Amdouni, but made no mistake less

that if they continue to play like that in our league then we’ll be fine and we’ll continue to move up the league. “That’s the standard. Ultimately we’ve lost, which nobody wants. But I feel we’ve been hard done by as well. If the goal had stood - and watching it back Mo Faal was onside when Joe Ironside headed it - I think we would have equalised because it’d have given us 30 minutes to get it and with the way we were playing, we’d have had that chance. You need the rub of the green away from home and we don’t seem to get it. “I thought it was a good performance from us. Peterborough are a good team and are flying high in the league above us but I think we more than matched them. “Apart from the first ten minutes when we showed them way too much respect, which wasn’t the plan. We sat off them and let them drift in from out wide, which led to the first goal. “But after that we looked strong. In the first half, it was a bit like a basketball game with them attacking and then us attacking.” Rovers found themselves two goals down after a Harrison Burrows cross bounced through and straight in, before Ephron Mason-Clark doubled Posh’s advantage after the break. And McCann was disappointed with costly defensive lapses on an otherwise solid afternoon. “We had a lot of good chances, as they did,” he said. “We put some good blocks in on the line. “But the two goals we’ve conceded really annoyed me. I speak to the team all the time about keeping people on the outside of them and not allowing the cross, which ended up straight in the back of the net. And on the second goal we let Ephron Mason-Clark on the inside. There was no real intensity from us to press either Ephron or Burrows and they’re good players who will punish you.”

than a minute later, scoring with the aid of the near post and United’s misery was compounded further when Brownhill

stroked home the fifth,

but thankfully that was the end of the scoring and notable action.

EVERYONE CAN TAKE CONFIDENCE FROM THAT PERFORMANCE Rotherham United interim manager Wayne Carlisle was proud of his side’s display as they took a wellearned point back north following a resolute display against hosts Birmingham City. The Millers were good value for a share of the spoils at St Andrew’s Stadium and they came within a whisker of their first Sky Bet Championship away win on the road when Sam Nombe struck the woodwork before Ollie Rathbone had a shot cleared off the line in the second half. “I’m delighted with the way the boys went about their business today although it is tinged with a little bit of disappointment because we should have come away with the three points. People may have said in the past we’ve been a little bit of a soft touch away from home, but we certainly weren’t that today. “It was the same formation that we’ve been playing (4-2-3-1). There was no difference in it. The difference was the mindset and mentality. It’s hard to single out individuals. The whole team and the players who came onto the pitch were a credit to themselves. “The game was what Rotherham United look like at their best. We were like that against Leeds and we were like that again today. The trade off it is hard to do it back to back with the squad with how it is at the minute. “I’m looking forward to Swansea. That is a big game for us. It’s definitely a winnable game for us, especially at home. I think we, the players and the fans have to take confidence from today and if we go about it right and have the energy in the team, we can stand up to it.”
