Additional cost of living support for Sheffield Sheffield City Council have confirmed they will be providing extra funding to support communities with the cost of living through the winter months. As the weather gets colder, more people struggle to heat their homes due to rising gas and electric bills. This can also make affording every-day-essentials like food, more difficult. That is why during the winter period it

is important to offer more support to local communities, which the Council is addressing in their Winter Plan. The Plan will see a boost in support for services like Welcome Places, and will put money back in the pockets of local residents who need it most, through additional grant funding. Councillor Richard Williams, Chair of the Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee, at

Sheffield City Council, said: “We want to make sure that anyone in the local community that might be struggling is supported through these harsh winter months. That includes putting cash in pockets for essentials like food, gas and electricity. “80% of the people that apply for extra help through our funding grants are families with children, and I certainly don’t want to see any of

our Sheffield residents cold or hungry this winter. “We are also bolstering efforts to support our Welcome Places across the city, and our Citizen’s Advice Services also, so everyone has somewhere to turn if in need.” As part of the support package, an additional £660,000 is to be made available to local people through the Household Support Fund – a non-

repayable grant to help people living in Sheffield with food and energy costs. More about the Household Support Fund can be found at www. sheffield.gov.uk/cost-ofliving/apply-householdsupport-fund The Council will also be providing more funding for Citizens Advice Services with an additional £169,000 to

expand their city-wide freephone advice line and to increase face-toface support over the next few months. The Council is also supporting a network of Welcome Places across the city. These are spaces that people can not only come to find warmth, feel safe and welcome, but also to find support, should they need it. Councillor Williams added: “We are

currently working with organisations across the city, including voluntary, community and faith organisations, who provide Welcome Places, to help them provide support for their local communities throughout the winter months.”

Rotherham market and library development new look revealed An artist’s impression has been released giving the latest glimpse of what the ambitious market and library complex for Rotherham town centre will look like. The to scale drawings show a cedar clad modern, light filled double height chamber which, once developed, will give a sense of space and scale. The improvement is a key part of Rotherham Council’s largescale regeneration plans aimed at breathing new life into the heart of the borough. The plans will complement the impressive Forge Island development also currently underway – forming the main cornerstones of the council’s multi-million-pound investment in Rotherham’s future. The plans, which were approved in the summer, will bring together the library, markets, food hall, gallery, and event spaces onto one site, off Drummond Street. Once works are complete, visitors will benefit from a refurbished indoor and outdoor covered market, and an external recreation area. Not only will this provide a modern and accessible central library but will also ensure links are improved between the town centre, library, and college. Rotherham Cabinet members are expected to sign off the proposals for the last time, subject to the final procurement cost, at its meeting next Monday, 18 December. Cllr Denise Lelliott, Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, said: “This next phase of the town centre masterplan is a

testament to the Council’s dedication to investing in Rotherham’s future and to preserving the heritage of the town while embracing its dynamic future. The redevelopment will not only breathe new life into the community, but also provide economic opportunities for local businesses. “Small independent retailers play a vital role within the wider town centre offer and whilst the works are on-going, we ask that residents continue to support local traders by visiting the markets. "The reinvention of the markets is not just a facelift, but a holistic reimagining that aims to boost the local economy, celebrate our diverse community and provide an accessible, enjoyable space for all." Rotherham's markets date back to the 13th Century and have been at their current site since 1971. A council paper published earlier this year said the existing site was under-utilised and poorly connected to nearby housing. The revamped market will offer more choice, promote local

businesses, and improve links to residential areas and Rotherham College. Main work will begin in Spring 2024, once a developer has been appointed. The outdoor market has already been moved to Effingham Street in preparation and will remain there until the new premises are complete. Rotherham’s traditional outdoor market continues to take place there every Tuesday, with the general market open Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays; antique and bric-a-brac on Wednesdays; and Rotherham Bazaar on Thursdays. The indoor market will be open throughout the festive period from 8.30am to 5pm, up to Christmas Eve when it will be open from 8am to 12pm. The indoor market will re-open on Wednesday, December 27. sick children’s trust abbeydale picture house drink driving - the facts reaches critical stage As the year draws to a close, we think about spending precious time with loved ones, but for many families with a sick child in hospital they’ll be worried about how they can be by their child’s side. Can you imagine having a seriously sick child in hospital and you’re not able to be by their bedside at this traumatic time? The Sick Children’s Trust is there to make sure no child faces hospital alone and can have their family by their side, especially at Christmas. This Christmas the Sick Children’s trust expect all ten of their ‘Homes from Home’ to be full, ensuring that families with a seriously ill child in hospital can be together, but they can only do this with your help. It costs The Sick Children’s Trust £40 to keep a family together for one night but that is only increasing with the cost of living crisis. Help them make sure families can be together this Christmas. Last year they supported Alfie’s family in our Crawford House ‘Home from Home’. His mum Becy said: “Crawford House really felt like a home from home. There was a large Christmas tree in the reception, and we had a communal kitchen, warm bedroom and bathroom. I found it so incredibly hard to leave Alfie on the ward each night, so to come back to such a warm, homely place like Crawford House, meant the world to us. It made a very difficult time that little

bit easier. With Christmas being our favourite time of year, we wanted to start our own family traditions. One of which was to read ‘The Night before Christmas’ to Alfie, something made possible by the close proximity of Crawford House to the ward. Though it wasn’t the first Christmas we had planned, we still got to spend precious time with our baby. Following his recovery Alfie is now thriving. While we will be making the most of this special time, we will also be thinking about the families spending Christmas in hospital and at Crawford House this year. We know how heartbreaking it is to have a child in hospital at any time, but over the festive period is particularly difficult. We’re urging everyone to support The Sick Children’s Trust and their Christmas appeal so that every family can be together over the festive period.” All families should be together during this precious time of year. Sheffield arts charity CADS (Creative Arts Development Space) has reached a crucial point in the quest to restore the Abbeydale Picture House building. Two years after the devastating news that the ceiling was unsafe and the roof was leaking water, parts of this iconic building are now at risk of immediate collapse. The significant issue lies in the current state of the space, including the Grade II listed auditorium, as it is deemed unsafe and unusable. This is causing a huge financial drain, with minimal returns from the remaining areas of the building. Earlier this year, an agreement was made for CADS to purchase the building with a mortgage approved. However, CADS have been unable to find the additional funds to secure the building. The Music Venues Trust, The National Trust and The Theatres Trust have all supported CADS with advice and consultation but two unsuccessful bids to the Community Ownership Fund (COF) from the UK Government have left CADS with limited options. This has led to a huge risk that the building will fall into further disrepair and dereliction, including a potential ceiling collapse, it requires a minimum of £160k spending to ensure it is safe with further funding needed to fully restore the building. In the two years since the water ingress was first discovered, the damage has increased a high chance that large sections of the antique, barrelvaulted plaster ceiling may collapse imminently. This outcome would be a huge blow to Sheffield. Much of the original features of this more-than-acentury-old picture house, despite needing work,

are still in place. We’ve seen previously what can happen to buildings like this in Sheffield such as the old town hall. Despite the main auditorium being out of action now for exactly two years, CADS have made extensive use of the ‘fly tower’ behind the main stage which was once used to house props and staging for the theatre and still contains the antique fire guard which would have dropped in front of the stage during the era around 100 years ago when gas lamps would have been the main source of light. Plus a ‘speakeasy’ bar has been created in the entranceway of the main space which plays host to events and activities. These projects are sadly not enough to sustain the running costs of the building. The CADS team has promised that there will be a significant update to this project very soon. CADS board director and founder Steve Rimmer said, “The CADS team has worked tirelessly to ensure the future of this prestigious building. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported us over the last seven years to try and make the building work, especially more recently, whilst the ‘main hall’ became unsafe. We are having supportive conversations with the Sheffield City Council regarding available support and exploring many different business models and bidding opportunities, but sadly, without significant funding, we’re becoming unable to continue our vision of saving this piece of Sheffield history. “

The Christmas countdown has begun in earnest, but drink and drug driving rehabilitation expert TTC is urging merry makers to be fully aware of the legal limits before they get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Findings from a TTC poll of motorists on drink and drug driving awareness are cause for concern. One in ten motorists confess to drink driving and a staggering 64% confirm they have knowingly accepted a lift from someone who is likely to be over the drink drive limit or taken recreational drugs. Someone found guilty of driving whilst over the drink or drug drive limit, or who was unfit through drink or drugs, including legal drugs in their system, could face an unlimited fine, a driving ban, a community service order or even a prison sentence. What’s more, if a passenger in that driver’s car was found guilty in a court of law of ‘aiding and abetting’, they could receive the same penalty as the driver, including being sent to prison and a disqualification from driving. However, the highest price to pay is being involved in a driver impaired collision that harms passengers, other road users and pedestrians. Latest Department for Transport figures show fatalities from drink-drive crashes are at a 12-year high. An estimated 260 people were killed in collisions on Britain’s roads involving a driver over the alcohol limit in 2021 – the highest

annual total since 2009. “Drivers are putting themselves, their passengers and other road users at serious risk every time they get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs,” Sharon Haynes, Director – Police at TTC commented. “You don’t have to be over the limit to increase your risk, but our survey results suggest drivers and passengers have a much too relaxed view of drink or drug driving. All too often this is simply due to a lack of awareness of the impact alcohol and medicinal and recreational drugs have on our senses and ability to drive safely. The findings also show drivers have little more than a vague idea of the legal implications of being caught over the limit.” Although being aware of units per alcoholic beverage and legal drink drive limits are a must, it is extremely hard to know if someone is over the legal drink drive limit at a given time. The minimum ban is actually 12 months for a first offence or three years if convicted twice in ten years. To mitigate the impact of alcohol or recreational drugs the morning after an evening out, less than half of respondents (49%) allow 24 hours to pass before driving, while 56% will drive as long as they got a good night’s sleep of seven hours. 41% make sure they drink a large glass of water before bed to rehydrate and help alleviate the inevitable hangover. One in three will have a big breakfast before getting behind the wheel, and one in five will rely on taking over the counter painkillers. Know the facts • The NHS recommends adults drink no more than 14 units of alcohol a week, spread across 3 days or more. That’s around 6 medium (175ml) glasses of wine, or 6 pints of 4% beer.

• If a driver is found to be over the drink-drive limit, and/or driving while impaired by alcohol, they can receive a maximum penalty of six months in prison, an unlimited fine and an automatic driving ban of at least one year. • Drivers can be convicted of drug driving even if they only took prescribed medicine, so check with your doctor or pharmacist if you’re unsure. • The Police confirm: - If you are found guilty of drink driving, you will receive a criminal record - You can be sent to prison on your first drink driving conviction - A UK drink drive conviction may impact your ability to visit other countries - The minimum driving ban because of a first conviction for drug or drink driving is 12 months, increasing to three years if convicted twice within ten years - If you drive for work, your employer will see your conviction on your licence • The Government confirms: - A drink driving conviction remains on a licence for between four and 11 years - A drug driving conviction remains on a licence for four years
