HOSPITALS URGE FOR COOPERATION DURING STRIKES Hospitals across the South Yorkshire region are offering advice to patients during this week’s strikes. There is planned industrial action by Junior Doctors from 7am on Wednesday 3rd January to 7am on Tuesday 9th January 2024. This is the longest period of strike action to date and whilst hospitals will be providing emergency care, they are likely to have considerably fewer doctors available during this time and as
a consequence waiting times will be much longer than normal for less urgent conditions or injuries. In Sheffield please note that the Minor Injuries Unit at the Hallamshire Hospital will be closed throughout the period of action. If you need non urgent medical advice or if you are not sure what service you need, please call 111. 111 can also directly book appointments out of hours with a GP. Broad Lane Walk in Centre in the City Centre is also open as normal to provide
urgent care without an appointment. Hospitals are asking residents to help during this time by: • Continuing to come forward if you need urgent medical care, especially in emergency and lifethreatening cases. Your NHS is here for you when you need it – especially if you or your loved ones become seriously ill or injured, or their life is at risk. • To help your NHS to focus on patients who need emergency care most, please only
call 999 or attend A&E departments for serious accidents and genuine emergencies. • If your relative is due to be discharged from hospital and needs to be collected, please do whatever you can to help bring them home as early as possible. This will help our teams to free-up a hospital bed for someone waiting to be admitted. • Please consider the full range of NHS services that are available to you. When you need urgent medical attention but
it’s not an emergency, alternative support is available by visiting NHS111 online or by calling 111. • Pharmacies can also offer over-the-counter advice and treat common illnesses such as colds, sore throats, stings and allergies. Patients who have planned procedures or appointments should attend as planned unless contacted. If your appointment or procedure is postponed, they will rearrange it as quickly as they can.

SNODGRASS
My friend was really proud of his British heritage until he found out that his great grandfather was from Transylvania. Now he can’t even look at himself in the mirror. Yesterday I read an article about the dangers of drinking too much... It scared the hell out of me, so today I’ve decided never to read it again. Took my pet fish to the chippy the other day, I asked “Do you do fish cakes?” “Yep we do.” “Good cos it’s his birthday tomorrow.” My wife told me I was immature. So I told her to get out of my fort. Last week I was bored, so I decided to swap around the labels on my wifes spice rack. So far, she hasn’t noticed. Mark my words though, the thyme is cumin. I tried catching fog the other day Mist. Man: “Doctor I feel like a supermarket” Doctor: “How long have you felt like this?” Man: “Ever since I was Lidl.”

News, Information and Advice
are you planning to quit smoking? protect city’s multi-activity hub your pipes! As the new year approaches, many people resolve to quit smoking - yet doing so can cause side effects, which in turn may make it harder to stick to your goal. These side effects may include mood swings, a chesty cough, difficulty sleeping and unhealthy food cravings. Understanding and preparing for these side effects can contribute to a more successful and sustainable journey toward a healthier, smoke-free lifestyle. With that in mind, an expert from gosmokefree.co.uk has revealed the best way to help manage potential side effects as well as five foods to avoid, and exercises that can help strengthen the lungs over the winter months – to give you the best chance of success. The expert says: “For those who are finding it difficult to manage side effects, practice breathing exercises and meditation, build up your exercise routine so you have a healthy outlet for your frustrations, and contact a counselling service if you need to talk. One of the most common side effects when stopping smoking is developing a chesty cough. The best way to manage a chesty cough is to stay hydrated, take hot showers to loosen mucus in the respiratory passages, and use honey to reduce irritation in the throat.” And for those having trouble sleeping, cut out caffeine, create a relaxing atmosphere before bed with a bath or calming book, and stick to a strict bedtime so that winding down becomes second nature. Try to be especially wary of latenight tobacco cravings!
As well as offering tips to manage physical and mental side effects, the experts have identified four foods to avoid until you’ve successfully stopped smoking, as consuming them may cause a relapse or exacerbate side effects further. Five foods to avoid when stopping smoking 1 Spicy food 2 Sugary snacks 3 Coffee 4 Fried foods 5 Excessive salt They say: “It’s also key to be aware of your diet, as spicy and sugary foods can trigger nicotine. Furthermore, if you opt for excessively sugary foods when quitting smoking, you run the risk of forming a sugar addiction as a replacement for nicotine.” Another strong trigger when quitting smoking is coffee, as the expert explains: “Coffee acts as a trigger for smoking nicotine because the caffeine in coffee enhances the stimulating effects of cigarettes, creating a synergistic buzz. The pairing of coffee and cigarettes often becomes a habitual and reinforcing routine, strengthening the association between the two, making it challenging for those trying to quit smoking. Fried foods should also be avoided, as they can contribute to excess torso fat and add pressure to the diaphragm. For anyone in the process of quitting smoking, this increased pressure can exacerbate breathing difficulties and make the journey more challenging.” Finally, the expert warns against excess salt, saying: “An over-consumption of salt can result in water retention in the body, creating additional weight

around the diaphragm. This also causes extra pressure that can restrict breathing and make sticking to your goals harder.” For those who are looking to strengthen their lungs and reduce the risk of increased pressure on the diaphragm, the experts at gosmokefree.co.uk have revealed accessible exercises that can help combat respiratory challenges and boost healing lungs. “Exercises that includes weights or resistance bands can build stronger muscles that are more efficient at using oxygen. This means that the blood flow increases throughout the body as the lungs don’t need to work as hard. Pilates is also great if you’re wanting to boost lung capacity, as it helps to tone up the lungs which can help reduce shortness of breath. Aerobic exercises such as a brisk walk or swimming can be good for those struggling with breathing, as it’s so low impact. They can help to increase blood circulation and increase your heart rate. And while yoga may not seem like an obvious choice when quitting smoking, it helps you to practice deep breathing and mindfulness, which can help with low moods.” Taking care of your body is crucial when quitting smoking as it helps mitigate withdrawal symptoms, promotes overall well-being, and accelerates the recovery of damaged organs. Prioritising self-care - including healthy nutrition, regular exercise, and sufficient rest eases the challenges of quitting but also sets the foundation for a sustainable smoke-free lifestyle.
Yorkshire Water is reminding customers to insulate their pipes, to prevent them from freezing and potentially bursting. Lagging pipes not only prevents them freezing during cold weather, it can also help save money on bills and save on the cost of repairs should a pipe burst and cause damage to your property. With many people visiting friends and family over the festive period, lagging pipes is a great way to ensure you don’t come back to a costly surprise when you return home. Polyethylene foam is most commonly used to prevent pipes freezing in the home and is versatile so can be used indoors or outdoors. It’s also fairly cheap to purchase and can be installed without the need of a professional if the pipework is not located under your flooring. Emily Brady from Yorkshire Water said: “Pipes that are not properly insulated can freeze during the colder months, and this can lead to pipes cracking, becoming blocked or burst ” Pipes, taps, cisterns, tanks and water meters in unheated areas that might be exposed to the cold need to be lagged. When these have been identified, cut a piece of lagging to size and clip it on. The lagging can be secured by using some cable ties. Lagging will also help insulate the properties hot water system and could help customers save money on bills. For outdoor taps, use a tap cover to stop them freezing or a rubber pipe, which is good at withstanding extreme temperatures. Plans have been submitted to build a new Multi-Activity Hub in Sheffield’s Hillsborough Park, which will include all new tennis courts, a multi-use games area, mini golf, a new café and more. Sheffield City Council say the aim of the new hub is to create a highquality facility nestled in green space, that will help people to be more physically and socially active in their local area. They have enlisted the help of partner Courtside CIC – who are dedicated to increasing physical activity through the transformation of local parks – to create the activity hub. They will be bringing additional investment that will allow for the redevelopment of the tennis courts and multi-use games area. Councillor Richard Williams of Sheffield City Council, said: “We are dedicated to ensuring that everyone in Sheffield has equal opportunities when it comes to health, sport and wellbeing. To do this, we need to make sure that everyone has access to quality facilities and services. The development of this unique new facility will have a real benefit to the local Hillsborough community, and I am delighted we are one step closer to making this happen with the submission of plans.” The proposal for Hillsborough Park MultiActivity Hub includes the development of: • Three full sized, pay and play tennis courts, with high quality, considerate floodlighting.
• One tennis court will also have netball markings. • A resurfaced and redesigned, free to use, multi-use games area with basketball and football markings as well as floodlighting. • A nine-hole, pay and play mini golf course. • An open space for exercise, spectating and socialising. • Two pay and play covered padel courts. • A new café with indoor and outdoor seating, and public toilets. Hillsborough Park has been identified as the most suitable location in the city for the new hub, due to its popularity as a destination park and its excellent transport and access links. In addition, the Council says the park’s existing multi-use games area is in need of investment to ensure it remains fit for park visitors to use. Sheffield City Council have recently launched their 10-year Sport and Leisure Strategy, which aims to place Sheffield at the forefront of sport, physical activity, leisure, and wellbeing in the UK. The strategy sets out the Council’s ambition to have facilities, activities and services, which are modern, welcoming, inclusive and meet the needs of everybody in Sheffield – encouraging more people to be more active, more often. It was developed following a comprehensive consultation last year and will contribute to achieving the shared vision in the city’s Move More Strategy.

Over one million pounds paid back by criminalS
Over £1million has been paid back by criminals during 2023 after their lives of luxury have been halted. Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) orders have been issued to criminals who have received sentencings and time behind bars, ordering them to pay money gained from their life of crime. Head of Asset Recovery Laura Hough, from the Economic Crime Unit (ECU), explains: “Many people will think that our job is complete once we place criminals behind bars, but this isn’t the case. “The ECU team works hard to ensure that criminals do not continue to benefit from ill-gotten gains, which often lead to a life of luxury. Criminals involved in organised crime can sometime see hundreds of thousands of pounds in financial gain, often buying second homes, luxury cars and expensive clothes and possessions.” In December 2023, in total over £272,000 was ordered to be paid back under POCA. Laura continues: “Knowing that the work we have completed over the past year has led to over one million pounds being paid back to the justice system is excellent. This money is being used to fund community grant schemes from the Police and Crime Commissioner, giving back to
communities which may have reaped the negative effects of crime.” The payback scheme was developed by the Home Office, encouraging law enforcement organisations to go after criminals’ assets after they have received a sentencing. The money received from confiscation orders is paid back into the Home Office law enforcement schemes and the force in which captured the criminal. The money invested in the Police and Crime Commissioners has funded projects including youth sport and music groups, mentoring and peer support projects. As well as awareness education around violence against women and girls and domestic abuse. In total, £1,355,341.86 worth of POCA Confiscation orders have been issued throughout 2023, with an additional £772,350.03 in POCA civil forfeiture orders being obtained. Are you suspicious of someone who has an extravagant lifestyle but can’t explain where their money has come from? Tell us what you know – call 101 or go through our suspicious activity online portal. LEGACY OF FORMER TRAMLINES DIRECTOR CONTINUES WITH GRANTS Plea To Save Lisa Vaughan is one of the calling for people to visit TO LOCAL MUSIC PROJECTS THROUGH THE SARAH NULTY FOUNDATION Hillsborough members the club. She said: “We want to for a Gin & tonic.
The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation was established in 2020 as a tribute to the late Sarah Nulty, former Tramlines Director. The foundation’s objective is to enrich the lives of Sheffield residents by spreading happiness and joy through the transformative power of music. Due to the continued support and generosity of local people and organisations, they have been able to increase their grants from £300 to £500 and also offer a limited number of £2000 grants. The grants have enabled us to support a variety of musical projects across the city.
mini band class that had the opportunity to play keys, ukulele, and other instruments or to sing with the band. One World Choir – They used the grant to pay for a full-day singing workshop led by one of the workshop leaders from the Black Lives Matter Commissioning Project. Darnell Dementia Trust – They utilised the grant to provide clientled singing sessions once a month, as they could see how the power of music evoked memories for those who attended and encouraged them to sing, dance, and recall memories.
Here are some of the charities that received a £500 grant: Brightside Music – The grant gave them financial support to offer music sessions to people accessing St. Luke’s Hospice. Tracks – They created a project to offer opportunities to young Ukrainians in Sheffield to engage in musical activities, including a
The Foundation’s latest large grants of £2000 were awarded to the following: Pattern and Push - They support young aspiring vocalists and musicians, particularly those with vulnerabilities that may disadvantage their ability to succeed in music. Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice They work with young people and
their families (up to the age of 25) who have life-limiting conditions. With the help of our grant, they will host their first “Bluebell WoodStock” music festival so that young people and their families can experience a music festival with live bands. Previous large grants were awarded to The Children’s Hospital Charity and Mondo Radio. You can
check your eligibility for a grant by visiting The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation website at www. thesarahnultypowerofmusicfoundation.co.uk. The Foundation has expressed it’s gratitude for people’s continued support and hope to help even more in the coming new year.
Social Club
A Sheffield social club has launched an appeal for funding after suffering an enormous loss of income following the pandemic lockdown and a huge increase in energy bills. The historic Hillsborough Social Club, known as ‘The Oakland Road Club’, is asking for donations to ensure its doors are kept open and it can once again become a thriving club in the heart of the community. At present it has approximately 270 members, most of whom live locally, but it is urging people not just to donate funding but to walk through its doors and become members. It has a large concert room for 120 people, cosy lounge, snooker table and an inviting beer garden. Prices range from £2.70 to £3.70 for a pint of bitter or lager, £3.75 for a pint of cider and £3.60
encourage our existing members to use the club more, welcome new members and their families as well as community groups and all of these can bring it back to the thriving community space it once was. “Some members like my dad have been members for almost 60 years and it’s a social lifeline for them. I’ve grown up with the club. Trips to the seaside, Easter Bonnet parades and Christmas parties. I had my first legal drink there and worked behind the bar when I was 21. More recently we had our wedding anniversary party there. “It’s a great space to bring families and friends together and would be a great loss to the community if it closes.” For further details please contact: Lisa Vaughan – Treasurer 07763 024044 or Carol Barrott – Secretary 07392 346295

Röhl: A high performance culture As the Owls continue to claw back the deficit towards the Championship safety zone, Danny Röhl says the ‘high performance culture’ he is creating will keep his side on track. Wednesday beat Hull 3-1 on Monday evening in front of the Sky TV cameras, turning in an impressive allround performance at Hillsborough. It’s now five wins in eight for Röhl’s men and just three points from the line. Röhl told swfc.co.uk: “We still have a long way to go and for me it is about a
high performance culture on a consistent basis. “The players know what I demand from them and what I will continue to demand. “Today, the performance was fantastic. Even with 11 v 11 I thought we were the better side. After that with the red card, it can be difficult to play against 10 men. “You have a lot of possession and the opponent will be very tight so you must find new ways to break through and new angles. “We did that today and the goals we scored
were different goals from different places.” Röhl is combatting a lengthy injury and suspension list while producing back-to-back wins having overcome Preston last Friday. Cardiff are next in the FA Cup before league battle resumes at Southampton. The boss added: “Everyone is working so hard in difficult moments with injuries and suspensions. “We have everyone pushing in the same direction, the individual and team performance was outstanding.
“We have a small break from the league now, then we go to Southampton. “I am looking forward to returning to Southampton which was my first club in the UK, I know this will

Millers Head Coach Leam Richardson was quick to hail the fighting qualities of his side as they fought back twice to earn a share of spoils against Blackburn thanks to goals either side of the interval from Sean Morrison and Tom Eaves. The Millers looked to be staring down the barrel of another Sky Bet Championship away defeat at Ewood Park but Rotherham – under the stewardship of Richardson – are made of stern stuff and Eaves’ superb late headed equaliser handed them a vital point in their attempts to stave off the drop. “Fair credit to the players, they’ve had to go again over the Christmas period and turn out performances. Although I was critical at half-time, I thought we finished the second half, the stronger of the two teams. I thought we took control for large parts of the second half and we could have possibly gone on to win the game. “We were happy to come back in the first half. We wanted to set solid foundations for the second half but obviously to concede as early and in the way we did in the second half was avoidable in many different ways, but the response we got was fantastic. The players, who came on, gave us a lift and we scored a good goal to get back in it. With the work ethic and endeavour, we deserved a positive result today. “There will always be tactical and technical issues. The team is still growing and evolving with the bodies we have got and we know we need help with numbers. The challenge the players have faced over the Christmas period is commendable. Of course, you can avoid every
be a tough game against a very good opponent and this will be a big test for us. But for now, we rest, we recover and we prepare for Cardiff in the cup on Saturday.”
We won't get carried away
Grant McCann insists no one will be allowed to get carried away by the manner of Rovers’ win over MK Dons on New Year’s Day. Rovers swept aside the onform Dons in a comfortable 3-0 win as they built on the impressive showing at Mansfield Town three days earlier and put the struggles of the Christmas period behind them. But McCann says there remains plenty of work to do for his squad to reach the levels of which he knows
goal and we will certainly work on this on the training ground, collectively and individually. “(Morrison) is one of many you can single out. He is the only fit centre-half at the club. He has looked after himself tremendously well over this period with the age that he is. The performance levels, recently, reflect that and the players at the side of him have learned a lot from him. He deserved his goal. We knew we would be a threat from set pieces. “Tom (Eaves) has been training terrifically well. I thought he worked hard to score that goal. It’s a Tom Eaves goal. He was in the right place at the right time. It was a great ball from Revs (Seb Revan). I thought we were in the ascendancy at that point so it was a great time to score. His professionalism is top class and all credit to him for the goal.”
KIOSO RECALLED FROM PETERBOROUGH LOAN STINT... Rotherham United can confirm that they have recalled defender Peter Kioso from his loan spell at Peterborough United as per the terms of the agreement put in place in the summer transfer window. Kioso returns to AESSEAL New York Stadium following a successful temporary stint with the Posh, who he represented 27 times across all competitions after making the move to the Weston Homes Stadium in July. The 24-year-old re-joins his teammates at Roundwood but will be ineligible to feature in Friday night’s Emirates FA Cup tie with Fulham, having represented Peterborough United in an earlier round, and thus rendering him cup tied for the Millers.
they are capable. "I don't think anyone is getting too overjoyed by it,” he said. “It's a good result against a good MK Dons team that had been unbeaten for nine games in the league before this. "It's a nice reward for the hard work that we've put in over the last seven or eight days when we've had to bounce and rejig after the three disappointing results that we had. "It's a tremendous effort to go to Mansfield, who in my opinion are probably the best team in the division, and follow it up against another really good team and get the win. We didn’t get too worried about those three games. We know we’ve got good footballers, we know we’ve got a way of trying to turn things around,
improve and get better and we want to improve all the time. We’re in a bit of a transition at the moment. We’ve got a lot of injuries and a lot of young players coming through. It’s been tough but one thing we have got is a good, honest group of players. “They can put performances like the one we saw here and it’s down to us to get them to do that consistently. “We felt we played really well at Mansfield and were unlucky not to come away with the three points. “The hardest thing in football is to do it again and keep doing it again. We need to be more consistent. We’ve started 2024 really well so hopefully we can carry that on."
BLADES POTM FOR DEC Voting is now open for the December Sheffield United Player of the month, sponsored by AB Roofing Solutions. The award will run throughout the Premier League season and celebrate the contribution made by our top performers on a month-by-month basis. December saw Chris Wilder mastermind his first win of his second tenure as Blades boss, with a thoroughly deserved success over Brentford at Bramall Lane. United then also picked up a point against high-flying Aston Villa at Villa Park. The first nominee is Vinícius Souza. Starting in every single match since the return of Chris Wilder, the Brazilian has become a key-figure in the Blades midfield putting in several relentless performances. James McAtee is the second nomination. Scoring a wonderful curling effort against Brentford, he also provided an assist against Luton Town on Boxing Day. The third nomination is Gustavo Hamer. A Player of the Match display against Brentford was marked with an assist for James McAtee’s sensational strike. Hamer also recorded another assist, setting up Cameron Archer in the draw at Villa park. The final nomination is Jayden Bogle. With two stand out performances against Aston Villa and Brentford, Bogle has been ever present in the side since the arrival of Chris Wilder. Vote now at www.surveymonkey.com/r/BPSRH5Y
