Hundred drivers caught drink driving during December Over a hundred drivers ruined their Christmas and risked the lives of others by getting behind the wheel after a drink or taking drugs. South Yorkshire Officers deal with drink and drug drivers every day but they know that as the festive season approaches more drivers are more likely to take risks and get behind the wheel, so during December efforts are their increased to stop dangerous drivers. During the month officers arrested and
charged 118 drivers for driving while over the limit of alcohol, unfit through drugs or failing to provide a sample. No amount of alcohol in your system is safe and the effects of drink and drugs can have devastating consequences. Within 24 hours of testing positive you can be charged and appear before the courts. Of those arrested and charged, 76 (23-Doncaster, 17-Barnsley, 36 in Rotherham and Sheffield) were arrested and charged

for driving while over the limit of alcohol, 27 drivers (12Doncaster, 4-Barnsley, 11 in Rotherham and Sheffield) were arrested for driving while unfit through drugs and 15 drivers (1- Doncaster, 3-Barnsley and 11 in Rotherham and Sheffield) were processed for failing to provide a sample. Roads Policing Inspector Matt Collings explains more, he said: “We had an extremely busy December, and unfortunately witnessed the dangers of driving and using
the roads can bring with our attendance at fatalities and serious collisions. “Our passion remains to create safer roads for all road users and intercept those who use our road network to commit criminality. “For some of those arrested during the month, their lives will significantly now change, they could potentially lose their jobs, their families and face an unlimited fine or driving ban when they appear before court. “No amount of alcohol or drugs are safe and

Landmark leisure destination in Rotherham forges ahead as build programme for Forge Island enters final phase Building work is on track at Forge Island in Rotherham as the flagship development enters the final months of construction ahead of opening to the public towards the end of summer 2024. The new landmark destination, which will bring a much-needed family-friendly offer to Rotherham as part of Rotherham Council’s regeneration vision for the town centre, is being delivered in partnership with the Council, nationwide placemaker Muse and contractor Bowmer + Kirkland. Work began on site in November 2022 and construction has continued at pace, with all topping out milestones due to be reached early this year on the cinema, Travelodge hotel and retail buildings – set to house a mix of independent eateries. Once construction completes at the end of spring, the tenants will fit out their premises ready for the scheme opening. Local resident, 30-year-old Sam Clarkson, whose apartment overlooks Forge Island, said: “We’re on the seventh floor so we have a bird’s eye view of the development; all of a sudden it seems to have sprung up out of nowhere. I’m getting married this year and we have 400 guests coming, and having a trusted name like Travelodge, that everyone knows, on our doorstep is really great. Hopefully the development will have a domino effect and help put money back into other local businesses by bringing footfall into the town centre. It will give people more choice socially and bring more people in from other areas.”
Together with Rotherham Markets, the improvements are a key part of Rotherham Council’s large-scale regeneration plans aimed at breathing new life into the heart of the borough. Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy Denise Lelliott said; “These developments form the main cornerstones of the council’s multi-millionpound investment in Rotherham’s future. A number of major milestones have been achieved at Forge Island over the last 12 months, including the installation of a new pedestrian bridge, which connects to the town centre and which nods to the town’s rich engineering heritage and is inspired by the world-famous Bailey Bridge designed by Rotherham-born civil engineer, Donald Bailey, during the Second World War. Thousands of local people also discovered more about the past, present and future of Forge Island at a dedicated marquee at the Rotherham Show in September.” Last year, two giant cranes erected on site were named ‘Rotherham Rainbow’ and ‘Steely Crane’ by pupils at the local Thornbury Primary school following a ‘crane naming’ competition which received more than 70 entries. The cranes were dismantled last month as construction work nears completion, but children from the school were recently invited back to the site for a special ‘time capsule’ ceremony which saw books, school uniform, glasses and colourful drawings added to specially made capsule
now buried on site. Raife Gale, Senior Development Manager at Muse, said: “Developing a transformational scheme of this scale always comes with its challenges – not least the difficulties of building on an ‘island’ surrounded by water – so the fact we’ve remained on track is a testament to the hard work of the whole project team. It’s fantastic to see the impact Forge Island has already made on the town centre skyline, and we can’t wait for the community to come and enjoy all that it has to offer when it opens.” Construction work on the £47m Forge Island scheme – which was announced as 100% let in October 2022 – is led by contractor Bowmer + Kirkland, working alongside the wider project team which also includes Arup, Helm Consulting, Arcadis and re-form Landscape Architecture. The new pedestrian bridge was designed by FaulknerBrowne Architects.

News, Information and Advice
are you planning to quit smoking? protect city’s multi-activity hub your pipes! As the new year approaches, many people resolve to quit smoking - yet doing so can cause side effects, which in turn may make it harder to stick to your goal. These side effects may include mood swings, a chesty cough, difficulty sleeping and unhealthy food cravings. Understanding and preparing for these side effects can contribute to a more successful and sustainable journey toward a healthier, smoke-free lifestyle. With that in mind, an expert from gosmokefree.co.uk has revealed the best way to help manage potential side effects as well as five foods to avoid, and exercises that can help strengthen the lungs over the winter months – to give you the best chance of success. The expert says: “For those who are finding it difficult to manage side effects, practice breathing exercises and meditation, build up your exercise routine so you have a healthy outlet for your frustrations, and contact a counselling service if you need to talk. One of the most common side effects when stopping smoking is developing a chesty cough. The best way to manage a chesty cough is to stay hydrated, take hot showers to loosen mucus in the respiratory passages, and use honey to reduce irritation in the throat.” And for those having trouble sleeping, cut out caffeine, create a relaxing atmosphere before bed with a bath or calming book, and stick to a strict bedtime so that winding down becomes second nature. Try to be especially wary of latenight tobacco cravings!
As well as offering tips to manage physical and mental side effects, the experts have identified four foods to avoid until you’ve successfully stopped smoking, as consuming them may cause a relapse or exacerbate side effects further. Five foods to avoid when stopping smoking 1 Spicy food 2 Sugary snacks 3 Coffee 4 Fried foods 5 Excessive salt They say: “It’s also key to be aware of your diet, as spicy and sugary foods can trigger nicotine. Furthermore, if you opt for excessively sugary foods when quitting smoking, you run the risk of forming a sugar addiction as a replacement for nicotine.” Another strong trigger when quitting smoking is coffee, as the expert explains: “Coffee acts as a trigger for smoking nicotine because the caffeine in coffee enhances the stimulating effects of cigarettes, creating a synergistic buzz. The pairing of coffee and cigarettes often becomes a habitual and reinforcing routine, strengthening the association between the two, making it challenging for those trying to quit smoking. Fried foods should also be avoided, as they can contribute to excess torso fat and add pressure to the diaphragm. For anyone in the process of quitting smoking, this increased pressure can exacerbate breathing difficulties and make the journey more challenging.” Finally, the expert warns against excess salt, saying: “An over-consumption of salt can result in water retention in the body, creating additional weight

around the diaphragm. This also causes extra pressure that can restrict breathing and make sticking to your goals harder.” For those who are looking to strengthen their lungs and reduce the risk of increased pressure on the diaphragm, the experts at gosmokefree.co.uk have revealed accessible exercises that can help combat respiratory challenges and boost healing lungs. “Exercises that includes weights or resistance bands can build stronger muscles that are more efficient at using oxygen. This means that the blood flow increases throughout the body as the lungs don’t need to work as hard. Pilates is also great if you’re wanting to boost lung capacity, as it helps to tone up the lungs which can help reduce shortness of breath. Aerobic exercises such as a brisk walk or swimming can be good for those struggling with breathing, as it’s so low impact. They can help to increase blood circulation and increase your heart rate. And while yoga may not seem like an obvious choice when quitting smoking, it helps you to practice deep breathing and mindfulness, which can help with low moods.” Taking care of your body is crucial when quitting smoking as it helps mitigate withdrawal symptoms, promotes overall well-being, and accelerates the recovery of damaged organs. Prioritising self-care - including healthy nutrition, regular exercise, and sufficient rest eases the challenges of quitting but also sets the foundation for a sustainable smoke-free lifestyle.
Yorkshire Water is reminding customers to insulate their pipes, to prevent them from freezing and potentially bursting. Lagging pipes not only prevents them freezing during cold weather, it can also help save money on bills and save on the cost of repairs should a pipe burst and cause damage to your property. With many people visiting friends and family over the festive period, lagging pipes is a great way to ensure you don’t come back to a costly surprise when you return home. Polyethylene foam is most commonly used to prevent pipes freezing in the home and is versatile so can be used indoors or outdoors. It’s also fairly cheap to purchase and can be installed without the need of a professional if the pipework is not located under your flooring. Emily Brady from Yorkshire Water said: “Pipes that are not properly insulated can freeze during the colder months, and this can lead to pipes cracking, becoming blocked or burst ” Pipes, taps, cisterns, tanks and water meters in unheated areas that might be exposed to the cold need to be lagged. When these have been identified, cut a piece of lagging to size and clip it on. The lagging can be secured by using some cable ties. Lagging will also help insulate the properties hot water system and could help customers save money on bills. For outdoor taps, use a tap cover to stop them freezing or a rubber pipe, which is good at withstanding extreme temperatures. Plans have been submitted to build a new Multi-Activity Hub in Sheffield’s Hillsborough Park, which will include all new tennis courts, a multi-use games area, mini golf, a new café and more. Sheffield City Council say the aim of the new hub is to create a highquality facility nestled in green space, that will help people to be more physically and socially active in their local area. They have enlisted the help of partner Courtside CIC – who are dedicated to increasing physical activity through the transformation of local parks – to create the activity hub. They will be bringing additional investment that will allow for the redevelopment of the tennis courts and multi-use games area. Councillor Richard Williams of Sheffield City Council, said: “We are dedicated to ensuring that everyone in Sheffield has equal opportunities when it comes to health, sport and wellbeing. To do this, we need to make sure that everyone has access to quality facilities and services. The development of this unique new facility will have a real benefit to the local Hillsborough community, and I am delighted we are one step closer to making this happen with the submission of plans.” The proposal for Hillsborough Park MultiActivity Hub includes the development of: • Three full sized, pay and play tennis courts, with high quality, considerate floodlighting.
• One tennis court will also have netball markings. • A resurfaced and redesigned, free to use, multi-use games area with basketball and football markings as well as floodlighting. • A nine-hole, pay and play mini golf course. • An open space for exercise, spectating and socialising. • Two pay and play covered padel courts. • A new café with indoor and outdoor seating, and public toilets. Hillsborough Park has been identified as the most suitable location in the city for the new hub, due to its popularity as a destination park and its excellent transport and access links. In addition, the Council says the park’s existing multi-use games area is in need of investment to ensure it remains fit for park visitors to use. Sheffield City Council have recently launched their 10-year Sport and Leisure Strategy, which aims to place Sheffield at the forefront of sport, physical activity, leisure, and wellbeing in the UK. The strategy sets out the Council’s ambition to have facilities, activities and services, which are modern, welcoming, inclusive and meet the needs of everybody in Sheffield – encouraging more people to be more active, more often. It was developed following a comprehensive consultation last year and will contribute to achieving the shared vision in the city’s Move More Strategy.

Over one million pounds paid back by criminalS
Over £1million has been paid back by criminals during 2023 after their lives of luxury have been halted. Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) orders have been issued to criminals who have received sentencings and time behind bars, ordering them to pay money gained from their life of crime. Head of Asset Recovery Laura Hough, from the Economic Crime Unit (ECU), explains: “Many people will think that our job is complete once we place criminals behind bars, but this isn’t the case. “The ECU team works hard to ensure that criminals do not continue to benefit from ill-gotten gains, which often lead to a life of luxury. Criminals involved in organised crime can sometime see hundreds of thousands of pounds in financial gain, often buying second homes, luxury cars and expensive clothes and possessions.” In December 2023, in total over £272,000 was ordered to be paid back under POCA. Laura continues: “Knowing that the work we have completed over the past year has led to over one million pounds being paid back to the justice system is excellent. This money is being used to fund community grant schemes from the Police and Crime Commissioner, giving back to
communities which may have reaped the negative effects of crime.” The payback scheme was developed by the Home Office, encouraging law enforcement organisations to go after criminals’ assets after they have received a sentencing. The money received from confiscation orders is paid back into the Home Office law enforcement schemes and the force in which captured the criminal. The money invested in the Police and Crime Commissioners has funded projects including youth sport and music groups, mentoring and peer support projects. As well as awareness education around violence against women and girls and domestic abuse. In total, £1,355,341.86 worth of POCA Confiscation orders have been issued throughout 2023, with an additional £772,350.03 in POCA civil forfeiture orders being obtained. Tramlines Festival reveals huge opportunities for grassroots talent in 2024 Applications are now open for Apply To Play, the annual new talent scheme hosted by Tramlines Festival, which offers local and upcoming artists, paid-for opportunities to play at the event, taking place from 26-28th July at Hillsborough Park. Winner of the 2023 UK Festival Award for ‘Best Festival for Emerging Talent’ this regular feature at Tramlines - Sheffield’s biggest party - has helped dozens of grassroots talent gain a foothold in the competitive live music industry with the Tramlines team dedicated to nurturing next generation talent and offering career-kick starting prizes. The Apply to Play judging panel for the 2024 event has been revealed. Finalists will be selected by Amazing Radio (Shell Zenner), This Feeling, BBC Introducing, Rock Revival, Waterbear Music College, Exposed Magazine, Pirate.com and The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation. And the overall winner will be picked by John Kennedy, guru of
new music and host of Radio X. edy said, ‘The privilege of getting to choose the winner of Apply To Play is not just discovering loads of brilliant new talents and being able to give them a leg up the ladder but seeing the positive impact the scheme can have on artists’ mental health. It was touching to hear from last year’s winner Harri Larkin just how much it helped them grow in confidence and encouraged them to keep going. I’m looking forward to being able to do that again this year!’ Tramlines has partnered up with some brilliant brands and festivals to offer all finalists an extra special prize plus an incredible package is up for grabs for one very lucky Winner. The 2024 winner of Apply to Play will receive a paid performance slot at Tramlines Festival 2024 and the opportunity to perform at Truck (Oxfordshire), Y Not (Derbyshire) and Victorious Festival (Portsmouth). The winner will also receive industry support from John Kennedy (Radio X), media interviews with
new talent advocate Shell Zenner on Amazing Radio, plus Rock Revival and Exposed Magazine, £500 worth of studio time at Pirate Studios and a performance opportunity at the ‘This Feeling’ Industry Showcase. All finalists will receive a paid slot at Tramlines and £100 credit at Pirate Studios. Apply to Play 2023 winners, Harri Larkin, had a huge boost to the band’s fortunes following their Tramlines success. Harri said, “Winning the Tramlines competition has given us a massive career boost in and outside of Sheffield, headlining a stage at Tramlines is a great talking point when applying for gigs. We made loads of contacts off the back of our summer of festivals. Part of the prize was the opportunity to play a showcase for ‘This Feeling’ in London. We brought our A game and ended up being one of their “Big in 2024” picks leading to further festival and showcase opportunities in 2024”. Mikey Jones, Director of This Feeling said, “We’re all about giving new acts the opportunity to thrive

so to be involved in ‘Apply to Play’ with some of the biggest festivals in the UK, we jumped. Harri Larkin, SANTÙ & 88 Miles all won slots last summer and blew us (and packed tents!) away. We’re now working with all three as ‘Big in 2024’ picks and looking forward to developing these outstanding new talents further. It’s a massive chance to crack on in a notoriously tough industry so if you’re a new band, apply to play now!”
Any band or artist who would like to apply for 2024 has until 5pm Sunday 10th March to apply via the Tramlines website - https://tramlines.org.uk/explore/apply-to-play/ The award from the UK Festival Awards for Best Festival Emerging Talent follows Tramlines winning the ‘Best Metropolitan Festival’ in 2011 and 2019. Tramlines has also been shortlisted for ‘Best Medium Festival’ in 2022 and the UK Festival Awards named ‘The Sarah
Nulty Community Impact Award’ in honour of former Tramlines Director Sarah Nulty who passed away in 2018. This award was won by Teddy Rocks Festival in 2023, a Dorset-based event that has raised over £200k to support the fight against childhood cancer. Tramlines Festival 2024 takes place from 26th - 28th July at Hillsborough Park in Sheffield. Tickets are on sale now with the line-up launch expected later this month.

for the club, and James McAtee ensured United booked a place in the hat for the next round after a professional showing in Kent. Boss Chris Wilder made
James Beadle signs for Wednesday The Owls have completed the loan signing of goalkeeper James Beadle from Premier League Brighton & Hove Albion. The 19-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan in League One with Oxford United, where the talented young shot-stopper became a key member of the U’s side. He now moves up to the Championship with Wednesday for the remainder of the campaign. Beadle began his career with Charlton Athletic before making the switch to the Seagulls in September 2022.
WE GAVE A GOOD ACCOUNT OF OURSELVES - RICHARDSON Millers Head Coach Leam Richardson was proud of his side’s efforts against Premier League, Fulham, but it counted for little in the end as Bobby De Cordova Reid’s first-half goal put his side out of the Emirates FA Cup. The Millers proved a tough nut to crack for large stages of the Craven Cottage tie while Jordan Hugill had a first-half goal ruled out. However, Rotherham bowed out at the third round stage, thanks to De Cordova Reid’s winner. “You are always disappointed when you lose. Congratulations to Fulham. We wish them well in the next round. For large parts we contained them. We did the best we could. You could see from the substitutes

five changes to his starting 11 but still named a strong side for a first visit to Priestfield since 2016. McAtee, Gustavo Hamer, Cameron Archer, Femi Seriki and Rhys Norrington-Davies all came into the side with new signing Ben Brereton Diaz part of the bench which also included, for the first time in senior football for the Blades, young defender Evan Easton. United had the first opening when Luke Thomas fired a low shot which was held Jake Turner and moments later
Conor Masterson saw a goalbound effort for the hosts blocked by Jack Robinson. On 14 minutes United broke the deadlock. McAtee advanced with the ball before sliding a pass into the channel where OSULA had made a run in behind. The striker then burst past Max Ehmer and drilled a low shot beyond Turner. It could have been two shortly after when a mistake by Turner saw the ball break loose towards Archer who couldn’t get a clean connection when looking to convert.
He was loaned to Crewe Alexandra in January 2023 and enjoyed his first taste of senior football, catching the eye after a string of impressive performances. Beadle moved to Oxford in July last year and soon established himself at the Kassam Stadium, enjoying an unbroken run between the sticks between August and January. The teenager has represented England from the Under15s to the Under-20s, as well as receiving call-ups to the Three Lions’ Under-21s. He was part of the England squad that competed in last summer’s Under-20 World Cup in Argentina, playing against Iran in the group stage and keeping a clean sheet. Beadle’s move to Hillsborough sees him link up with his former goalkeeper coach at Brighton, Sal Bibbo, the they brought on, the quality that they have. “In the second half, we were better and we got up the pitch a little bit. We have then got to have those moments of quality in the final third. We have got to better with the ball at times. “At the moment, we are built in a certain way. We’ve got to have a foundation to build on and credit to players for how hard they worked against a strong Premier League team. “You have got to represent yourself well with hard work and endeavour and then we have got to have some quality going forward and when we have those moments to win football games, you have to take them. We scored a goal – although I haven’t seen it back – that was narrowly offside, and in these surroundings, you’ve got to make it count. “We wanted to be in the game after an hour and then up our levels, which we did. We had a couple of opportunities in the final third that we needed to put quality in the box and get our flair players on the ball further up the pitch, but you have to be respectful of the quality of the opposition and credit to them, they did nullify us in a lot of ways. “We wanted to create a better quality of chance and take the game further up the pitch but that will come with more time on the training ground to work with each other.”
A swift move involving Archer saw Andre Brooks well placed to shoot but his effort from 20 yards sailed wide. All the chances were falling for the Blades with Robinson close to converting Hamer’s free-kick. On 39 minutes it was 2-0. Seriki took aim from 25 yards and when Turner could only palm his daisy cutter into a dangerous area, OSULA was on hand to convert from close range. Before the break Thomas saw yellow, whilst the Gills threatened when Oli Hawkins’ header from
Connor Mahoney’s freekick saw Wes Foderingham make a save low down. Osula came close to a hattrick just before the break when Archer’s deflected shot fell kindly for him, but he fired over from 16 yards. Gillingham missed a glorious chance 10 minutes into the second half when Hawkins headed over from Mahoney’s corner. At the other end Hamer flashed an effort from the angle just over, and then good work from Archer ended with McAtee seeing an effort fly over. Archer looked in the mood
most recent addition to Danny Rohl’s backroom staff. The keeper will wear shirt number 26 for the duration of his Hillsborough stay.
home draws for blades and owls The Owls will host Coventry City in round four of the Emirates FA Cup. It means Wednesday and the Sky Blues will meet on back-to-back weekends. The Owls and Coventry also go head-to-head in the Championship on Saturday 20 January. United have been drawn at home against fellow Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion in the fourth round of the FA Cup. When the two sides meet at Bramall Lane it will be the first time they have faced each other in the competition since January 1987. The fourth-round matches are set to be played on the weekend of 27th and 28th January.
for a goal and just past the hour he was close again when he connected well with an effort which went over Turner’s bar. Moments later he was in a good area again, this time his deflected effort was parried by the ‘keeper. There was a debut for Brereton Diaz who replaced Osula as Wilder freshened up his side for the closing stages. Throwing caution to the wind, the home side started to threaten when Mahoney’s deflected effort hit the side netting, and with just over 10 minutes remaining Ehmer’s header from Mahoney’s delivery hit the inside of the post and rolled to safety.
After sub-Rhian Brewster was denied one-v-one by Turner, United’s passage to round four was sealed on 83 minutes. Norwood slid a pass through two Gillingham defenders where McATEE smashed the ball beyond Turner. There was still time for McATEE to find the net again on 88 minutes. A short corner saw Hamer find United’s playmaker who arrowed a fine effort into the bottom corner followed by his trademark acrobatic celebration in front of the travelling supporters. Before the end Brereton Diaz was denied a debut goal as Turner saved well low down with his legs.
McCann frustrated by consistent mistakes Grant McCann was left frustrated as familiar issues proved costly for Rovers in the defeat at Harrogate Town. McCann pointed the finger at allowing opposition players to cut inside for the goals that Rovers conceded in the 3-1 loss and demanded his team take on board the instructions he has consistently given since the summer. “It was harsh I felt and the scoreline probably doesn’t tell the picture of the whole game,” he said. “We had a slow start over the first 15 or 20 minutes and they had a lot of the ball. But we’re simply not learning or taking in information about keeping people outside of us. We let Folarin come in and he side-foots it into the corner. “We got ourselves back into the game with a good finish from Tommy Rowe and from that moment on we probably controlled the rest of the first half. We were really dominant in terms of how we played. “We didn’t have enough efforts at their goal but the play was good. We started quite bright in the second half and had numerous chances to score. We don’t score and then we let them inside the pitch again for the second goal. The third one was a carbon copy of a third, where we let Odoh inside the pitch. The players need to understand this. It’s happened from pre-season. The principles and how we work - we keep people on the outside of us. “We need to make sure we understand the principles of how we play. I’m not at the stage where the players don’t know how I work. I said to them in the changing room ‘if you can’t do what we’re asking you to do, come and speak to us.’ We’ll try to help them as we have done all season but ultimately it’s hurting us as a team. It’s hurting the club and the fans so we need to have a rethink about it.”
