Party is not just about the established or the headline talents, as anyone who has been will vouch for, but a vibrant festival packed full of emerging new and local talent. This commitment led to Tramlines winning the ‘Best Festival For Emerging Talent’ at the 2023 UK Festival Awards. Tipped for great things, festival-goers at Tramlines should make time to check out sets from former busker and now prepping to release his debut album, Dylan John Thomas - another rising star having sold out the Barrowland
Ballroom three times in 2023 in his home city, Glasgow. Dublin’s garage punk trailblazers Sprints play their first Tramlines as they celebrate their
debut album crashing the national top 20 albums chart. And Sheffield’s first Poet Laureate and hip hop artist, Otis Mensah will

Committee to discuss potential to consult on city centre Public Spaces Protection Order Sheffield City Council’s Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee will decide on 29th January whether to give the go ahead to consult on the introduction of a city centre Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO). If the committee gives the go ahead, it will also be asked to approve the draft PSPO which would form part of the consultation. A Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) provides additional powers for enforcement agencies to deal with a particular nuisance or problem in a specific area that is detrimental to the local community’s quality of life, by imposing conditions on the use of that area which apply to everyone. They are intended to help ensure that the people can use and enjoy public spaces, safe from anti-social behaviour. The Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 provides police and local authorities with a number of enforcement tools and powers to address anti-social behaviour and these powers are used, where appropriate, but are limited to tackling the behaviour of identified individuals, businesses, or organisations. What does the draft PSPO cover? The draft city centre PSPO covers drinking alcohol on the streets, begging, loitering and drug use and the committee report outlines the current situation in the city centre, explaining the thinking behind the possibility of introducing a PSPO. Behaviours from a group or individual must meet the following legal ‘test’ for intervention from enforcement agencies within a PSPO area: • have, or be likely to have, a detrimental effect on the quality of life of those in the locality; • is, or is likely to be, persistent or continuing in nature;
• is, or is likely to be, unreasonable; and • justifies the restrictions imposed.
What would the restrictions be? The restrictions for a PSPO can either apply to everyone at all times, or target specific behaviours at certain times, for example, alcohol is not to be drunk in a particular location between specific times. Wherever a PSPO is in place, special care must be made to ensure a PSPO doesn’t disproportionately affect vulnerable members of the community and they should not be used to target a specific group or individual. Before bringing in a PSPO the local authority must consult with a range of stakeholders, including the Police, the Police Crime Commissioner, community representatives, owners, and occupiers of land in the restricted area, and other people who may be affected by the order. Councillor Richard Williams, Chair of Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “On the 29th January the committee will be asked to consider whether anti-social behaviour in the city should be, or needs to be, approached with the additional powers of a city centre PSPO. If the committee gives the go-ahead to consult on this, we would be required to engage with a range of stakeholders on the draft PSPO in line with Government guidance.” The committee report is at www.democracy. sheffield.gov.uk and can be watched live on committee day at: Agenda for Communities, Parks and Leisure Policy Committee on Monday 29 January 2024, 2.00 pm | Sheffield City Council

TRAMLINES ANNOUNCES HUGE LINE UP FOR 2024 FESTIVAL Continued from Front Page
The 2024 Tramlines line up will continue to showcase the best the Steel City has to offer with appearances from MC and producer Coco whose top-tier collaborations include AJ Tracey, Conducta and Nadia Rose; The Leadmill Studio Orchestra, a brand new project - funded by the Tramlines Trust in 2023 and now coming full circle to appear on a Tramlines stage - that merges classical music with many genres of hip hop, RnB, and garage, performed by Sheffield’s finest young talents; and
no Tramlines line up would be complete without the hilariously entertaining, the Everly Pregnant Brothers. Operations Director of Tramlines Festival, Timm Cleasby commented “I’m delighted to release the first wave of acts for Tramlines 2024. There are some great bands on the line up! Securing headliners like Paolo Nutini, Jamie T and Snow Patrol is a fantastic testament to the reputation of Tramlines - and the hard work of our booking team - and, as always, they’re joined by top Sheffield talent including The Human League, Everly Pregnant
Bros, Coco, and Otis Mensah, with many more to follow. As always, we’re incredibly grateful for the support of the people of Sheffield following the challenges of 2023. We were blown away by the Sheffield spirit over the event weekend and have been overwhelmed by the amount of sign ups we’ve had for our ticket presale, launching on Thursday 25th at 12pm. We’re very happy to have reached a new 5-year deal with Sheffield City Council, preserving the future of the festival. We are working hard with
SCC on improvements to Hillsborough Park to ensure it remains an excellent public space throughout the year. Keep your eyes peeled as we launch the 2024 Tramlines Trust grants later this year. Sending over £50k back into Hillsborough, Sheffield and South Yorkshire projects in 2023 was a great feeling. I’m always blown away by the way our region produces creative solutions to societal issues and can’t wait to see the 2024 applications.” The 24 hour ticket Presale will go live on Thursday
25th January at 12pm. A limited number of Weekend tickets will be available from £130 + booking fees. Day tickets will also be available from only £45 + booking fees. Festival goers are advised to sign up for the Presale as this will be the best opportunity to secure a Tramlines 2024 ticket, with over 20,000 sign ups so far, demand is already huge. Final remaining tickets will be available in the General Sale on Friday 26th January at 12pm. Sign up to the Presale here: https://bit.ly/ TL24PresaleSignUp There’s much more to be
unveiled for Tramlines 2024 including headline standup comedians, the colourful programme of the onsite pub, The Open Arms, its family friendly area packed with quirky things to do, a revamped offering of independent food traders, bespoke craft beer and ale, vintage clothes stores, plus roaming entertainment, which altogether make Tramlines one of the bestvalue three-day festivals in the country!

In Yorkshire more than 214,000 people have a ‘silent killer’ which is one of the leading causes of serious strokes – and many more may be unaware that they have it. Atrial fibrillation – or AF – is a cause in around one in five strokes and these are often more severe, with higher mortality and greater disability. When this happens, your heart won’t empty all of the blood out of its chambers with every beat. Then the leftover blood can form clots which travel from your heart into the brain, blocking off blood flow and causing a stroke. AF sometimes has symptoms including palpitations feeling as if your heart is fluttering, thumping or skipping a beat - fatigue, feeling breathless or having chest pain. But often it’s symptomless, which is why it often goes undiagnosed, until it’s too late. The good news is that AF can be picked up and treated after a simple check. So on Stroke Prevention Day, Thursday 25 January, we are encouraging the public to check their own pulse at home or to use a pharmacy service to get their pulse checked. A video on our website shows how you can test yourself by placing two fingers on your wrist or neck www.stroke.org.uk/ spd24. Normal heart rate: your pulse should feel regular. Most people have a resting heart rate between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). Abnormal heart rate: your pulse may feel uneven or skip a beat. Your resting heart rate could be over 120 bpm. If your pulse is irregular, or very fast when you are at rest, you should contact your GP. This 60-second test could save your life
Sheffield’s burial provision is set to be futureproofed in new plans. Sheffield City Council is developing a new strategy that aims to ensure there is a high-quality bereavement service available to the people of Sheffield for years to come. Everyone will be affected by the loss of a loved one at some point in their lives and the Council are aiming to ensure there is a dignified, consistent, inclusive and accessible offering for all of Sheffield’s communities. Councillor Richard Williams of Sheffield City Council, said: “We want develop a strategy that will suit our city’s needs for the next 25 years and beyond. Our goal is to devise an ambitious and far-reaching plan that will support our growing city long after we’re gone. Whilst it’s not imminent, we know that our existing burial space will eventually get to capacity at our existing cemeteries. We want to act now to find new land on which to build more modern, greener cemeteries and improve the facilities and provisions on our current sites. We also want to provide a robust and inclusive service that caters for everyone in Sheffield.” To achieve this, they have launched an extensive citywide consultation process, with residents and local community groups being asked to have their say on services such as burial, cremation and cemeteries as green spaces. Sheffield City Council are responsible for managing 16 cemeteries, as well as two crematoria and garden of remembrance across the city. Approximately 3000 cremations and 800 burials take place annually across these sites, with further, specific services such as the burial of cremated remains, purchasing and displaying of memorials and storage of remains also being offered.

Storm Isha has caused widespread flight disruption across the country yesterday, and some airports are warning of travel problems into today and the rest of the week. For those who experience any delays or cancellations in the coming weeks, a spokesperson has shared your best options for rearranging and claiming any compensation: “Whilst booking a package holiday can slash the cost of going away, if your flight is cancelled you can risk having your whole holiday cancelled or rearranged. If you have booked a package holiday and your flights are cancelled, you have the rights to claim a full refund and potentially compensation from the airline. In cases of flight delays and flight cancellations due to an ‘extraordinary circumstance,’ the airline must provide you with additional services, depending on the length of your delay and waiting time. These additional services include free meals and refreshments, which you are entitled to when your flight is delayed by at least 2 hours. Passengers should also receive a free overnight accommodation and a transfer to and from the airport if the flight is shifted to the next day. If a travel operator needs to cancel a package holiday for any reason, they are required to notify you as soon as possible and without undue delay. This is to ensure that you have enough time to help you make alternative arrangements or seek
refunds. If the delay lasts more than five hours, but is not actually cancelled, you should also be able to choose not to travel and get a full refund on your ticket. If your flight cannot be rearranged, meaning your whole holiday must be cancelled, then the travel company must offer an alternative holiday if possible, or a refund of the full package price, not just the flight part.” What is the best option? If you are wondering whether to claim a full refund or reschedule your holiday, this depends on personal circumstances. There are several factors you can consider making this decision: Refund Amount - if the travel operator is offering a full refund, this could be financially more appealing, especially if you are uncertain about your future travel plans. Availability - consider if the dates the travel operator offers you are a suitable alternative date for your original trip. If the new dates do not align with your schedule, rescheduling might not be a viable option. Change Fees - check if the travel operator is waiving any change fees for rescheduling. Travel Insurance - if you have travel insurance, review your policy to see if it covers cancellations or changes due to unforeseen circumstances. This might influence your decision to reschedule or opt for a refund.

The scale of the panels and the skill and artistry on display is extraordinary. Touring twenty cathedrals, the exhibition has already inspired hundreds of thousands of people. The panels are huge – 1.5m/8ft high by as much as 4m/13ft wide, each individually crafted using layers of silk, handdyed materials, metallic leathers and gold leaf, miles of thread – and more than eight million stitches! The exhibition has been created by textile artist Jacqui Parkinson, who took her inspiration from the poetic verses of Genesis, the first book of the Bible. Her astonishing stitching is attractive and eyecatching and designed to be accessible to people of all ages. Whilst the serious message of God’s good earth and man’s impact on it underlies the entire exhibition, the panels are bold and exuberant, highly engaging for everyone – and great fun for children too with many delightful quirky details such as fanciful creatures and animals including frogs, flamingos, tadpoles and an elephant which have been embroidered
into the panels. Jacqui has created an exhibition with a vibrant narrative and spectacular designs. She says: My aim was to capture the wonderful extravagance of the Creation story and to delight people who see it. Despite Adam and Eve’s fall from grace, it remains a story of love and promise, something we can all do with these days.” Dean of Sheffield, the Very Revd Abi Thompson said: ‘We’re delighted to be hosting this wonderful exhibition. Jacqui has created something truly beautiful, and whatever your age or background, whether you are concerned about climate change and the damage to creation, or you are a lover of art and textile work, there is something here to inspire and challenge. We look forward to welcoming all people to come, look and experience the telling of an extraordinary story through colour and pattern. Threads Through Creation runs until 3 March. Admission is free. Donations are appreciated. Visit the www.sheffieldcathedral. org and/or the cathedral’s social platforms for visitor information, opening hours and details of special tours related to Threads Through Creation.

Sheffield gears up for MOBO Awards with three days of events Sheffield will host a series of events to celebrate the MOBO Awards coming to the city for the first time. MOBO Awards Sheffield – The Fringe, organised by Sheffield City Council in collaboration with MOBO and members of the local community, will take place in the run up to the awards show on 7 February 2024, and will see the city showcase all it has to offer in the way of black music and culture. On Monday 5th February, some of Sheffield’s best new and emerging talent from across the MOBO genre will be recognised at a talent showcase, held at the Crucible Theatre. The city will also play host to an industry panel event, with leading players from the UK’s black music scene offering insight to local young talent. On the day of the awards, there will be a celebration of Sheffield’s black culture in the city’s Winter Garden, with over 25 stalls and music acts helping residents warm up for the main event, the 26th MOBO Awards, which will take place at the Utilita Arena Sheffield. Local schools will also be getting involved in the action, exploring
the impact of black music and culture through a range of educational activities. Citywide venues and businesses are also being encouraged to host their own MOBO themed events, to welcome the awards show to the city. Visit the Welcome Sheffield website to find out how you can get support in celebrating the MOBO Awards. Kanya King CBE, Founder and CEO, MOBO Awards, said: “We are proud to work with Sheffield City Council, local schools, music hubs and youth organisations to unveil MOBO Awards Sheffield – The Fringe; a dynamic series of events poised to transform Sheffield into a vibrant hub of musical innovation and inspiration. “Our goal with the Fringe is to celebrate black music and culture and work together to ignite creativity in the next generation of talent. “From workshops in local schools, to a grassroots showcase with an impressive lineup of some of Sheffield’s finest black music artists, an esteemed panel of music industry executives sharing insights and experiences, plus a
special highlight – a MOBO city takeover at Sheffield’s iconic Winter Garden for exciting daytime performances on the day of the awards. “MOBO Awards Sheffield – The Fringe is more than an event – it’s the start of a movement to foster community spirit and shine a spotlight on the rich cultural tapestry of Sheffield.” Councillor Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Development and Skills Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is more than just a festival of events, this is a celebration of unity and diversity. “It will see the city embrace both the beats and flavours of Africa and the Caribbean and is a testament to the power of the music and culture on offer in our city. “MOBO Awards Sheffield - The Fringe is going to be unforgettable experience for Sheffield and our communities, and I hope everyone is able to get involved and enjoy what’s on offer.” For more information about any of the MOBO Awards Sheffield - The Fringe events, please visit the Welcome Sheffield website.
£14,000 haul of illegal vapes and cigarettes seized during operation in Doncaster Around £14,000 worth of illegal vapes, cigarettes, cigars and nicotine pouches have been recovered from off-licences in Doncaster as part of a night-time operation. Officers from SY Police’s GRIP team, which carries out daily patrols of crime hotspots, were in Doncaster city centre during last week's Operation Duxford, with drugs dogs deployed, a knife arch installed and various premises visited. During a joint operation with Doncaster City Council's Trading Standards department last Friday (12 January), eight premises were visited with officers seizing 1,549 illegal vapes. They also recovered 556 packets of illicit cigarettes, 37 packets of illicit hand rolling tobacco, five illegal cigar packets and seven illegal nicotine pouches. All of these items were worth an approximate combined total of £14,000.
The team also worked alongside Environmental Health and Immigration officers to visit takeaways and restaurants, with one man arrested on suspicion of immigration offences. Drugs wipes were carried out at city centre bars and 14 stop and searches were conducted with one found in possession of cannabis and another found in possession of cocaine. Joseph Gourdin, a GRIP team constable, said: "Our patrols focus on hotspot areas and it was encouraging to hear so much positive feedback from members of the public during these operations. "We will continue to serve our communities in key identified areas through high visibility patrols that will allow us to engage with members of the public and reassure the people of South Yorkshire."

BLADES SNATCH DESERVED LAST GASP POINT United snatched a deserved late point after a last gasp Oli McBurnie penalty earned a 2-2 draw against West Ham. In a dramatic finale at Bramall Lane, United looked set for defeat after James Ward-Prowse’s penalty 11 minutes from time put the visitors 2-1 in front. But there was late drama which saw both Rhian Brewster for United Vladimir Coufal for West Ham sent off in injury time, and there was still time for another penalty when Hammers stopper Alphonse Areola crashed into Oli McBurnie. McBurnie stepped forward to convert his fourth of
the campaign to end a chaotic period late in the game and bag United a priceless Premier League point. United made five changes to the side following the FA Cup win at Gillingham a fortnight ago, as Chris Wilder’s troops geared up for their first Premier League contest of 2024. January signing Ben Brereton Diaz started a Premier League game for the first time, making his full home debut in the process, whilst there were also returns for Auston Trusty, Jayden Bogle, Anel Ahmedhodžić and Vini Souza. Femi Seriki, Rhys Norrington-Davies, Ollie Norwood and Cameron
Archer all dropped to the bench, whilst it was announced last week that Leicester loanee Luke Thomas had returned to his parent club. United made the early running with a well struck Souza strike from distance held by Areola, whilst at the other end the onrushing Wes Foderingham did enough to put off Danny Ings who sniffed a half-chance inside the area. The Blades were given a warning on 14 minutes when Souza was caught in possession deep inside his own half but when the chance arrived Jarrod Bowen drilled wide. United continued to have
the better opportunities and almost had a stroke of luck when Gustavo Hamer’s effort deflected to Andre Brooks who smashed over under pressure. Four minutes later Brereton Diaz was slipped through on goal, but the inevitable offside flag was raised after he squared for Will Osula whose effort was saved. On 23 minutes Brooks showed great skill to put the ball through Coufal’s legs before cutting the ball back to Brereton Diaz whose shot was saved by Areola. Another chance arrived soon after when Hamer’s corner was met by an unmarked Trusty, but he planted his header
WE WERE REALLY COMPETITIVE Moses hat-trick Head Coach Leam Richardson was quick to praise the battling qualities of his Millers side as they frustrated EFL Cup semi-finalists Middlesbrough for large spells of the Riverside Stadium encounter before being denied a rare away victory by a late equaliser. Cafu’s first goal for the club looked on course to give the Millers their first win of the road for well over a year but sub Marcus Forss dashed their hopes of the league double over Michael Carrick’s side with a well-taken leveller. “For large parts of it, we were really competitive. The game panned out the way we thought it would have done. We are just disappointed with the goal we conceded. “The disappointing thing is that when you take the lead, you want to impose yourself on the counter. Every goal can be avoided but I certainly can’t deny the output and commitment of the team. We spoke about that before the game that we needed that to get positive results and we certainly did that. “I think you do (weather a storm) in most games in the Championship. At certain levels, you’ve got to make sure when it’s your bit of pressure and your actions within the game, that you make it count and it’s something we are improving upon daily, and when you defend, you’ve got to make sure you enjoy the challenge. I think the performance levels (away) have been to a reasonable standard and we want to improve upon that, both individually and collectively as a team. We want to add to the group and make sure when we go around the country to meet these challenges in these really good environments, to give a really good account of ourselves.”
seals 18s victory
A Devlan Moses hat-trick ensured the Owls returned to winning ways on Saturday at Birmingham. Following the youngsters’ FA Youth Cup exit to Reading and then a postponed fixture with Barnsley, Wednesday were back in action at the weekend. The visitors made a fast start at Wast Hills as Moses met a Carlos Rodrigues centre to give Wednesday an early advantage. Goals from Frank Tattum and Alezandro Da Silva swung the game in favour of the Blues but in a dramatic conclusion to the contest, Moses scored two late goals to complete his treble and seal the win. Rodrigues lost possession inside the box but the ball landed at the feet of Moses, who caught the keeper out with an audacious early effort from the edge of the area. Then with three minutes to go, Wednesday completed the comeback. The Owls probed for an opening in the final third and it was Jarvis Thornton who spotted the run of Moses in the box, and the forward took a touch, swivelled and buried low into the bottom corner.

straight at Areola. Despite United having more opportunities, it was the visitors who took the lead on 28 minutes. Coufal on the right cut the ball inside to Ings whose deflected effort fell kindly to MAXWEL CORNET lurking at the far post, who gladly steered the ball beyond Foderingham. Hamer was first into the book for a foul on Pablo Fornals and Ward-Prowse duly followed for a trip on Bogle. Just before the break United deservedly levelled. Trusty headed the ball into a dangerous area where Osula was lurking. The striker’s headed effort was kept
out by Areola, but BRERETON DIAZ was on hand to fire home from 12 yards for his first United goal and first in the Premier League. McBurnie replaced Osula at half-time for United, and he was close to connecting to a rightwing cross from McAtee which just evaded his outstretched boot. The Blades were knocking on the door again soon after when Hamer’s cross was headed over by Trusty. Just before the hour mark the Blades created a wonderful chance when McAtee slipped in Brereton Diaz who timed his run in behind to perfection. The striker closed in on goal from the angle but dragged his effort wide in front of the
McCann: Hakeeb will get fans off their seats Grant McCann believes new signing Hakeeb Adelakun will offer fresh threat to Rovers’ attacking arsenal after joining on loan from Lincoln City. McCann previously signed Adelakun at Hull City and explored the possibility of bringing him to Rovers in the summer. “I feel like we haven’t got a player like Haks,” he said.”What I mean by that is he’s really clever in terms of the positions he can pick up, he can slip people in, he can score goals himself. I think he’s a really good signing for us. He was part of that successful team with me at Hull and he fitted right into the group. He’ll do that here as well because of the characters that we have in the changing room and the people working hard. Haks is like that as well. He brings a lot of experience with the levels that he’s played at - Championship, League One and League Two. He’s done well in the first half of the season at Lincoln so we were surprised when we heard he might be available and we acted really quickly. “He’ll get fans off their seats with the way that he plays.” McCann says the 27-year-old will bring plenty of competition across the side due to his versatility. “He can play across the front line, he can play as a ten or an eight,” he said. “He’s got tremendous versatility in what he can do. With the competition we’ve got at the top end of the pitch, he’ll complement them well. We’re really pleased with what we’ve got at the top end with the players that we’ve brought in this month adding to what we’ve already got in that area.”
Kop. The Blades made a second change on 67 minutes as Brereton Diaz was replaced by Archer and a minute later Brooks saw yellow for a foul on Emerson. The visitors threatened inside the last 20 minutes when Ings worked a shooting position after a run across United’s penalty area, but his wellhit shot was held to his left by Foderingham. Ahmedhodžić was then cautioned after a challenge from behind on Ings. With 13 minutes remaining a smart turn from Ings inside the area drew the challenge from Hamer and the referee pointed to the spot. Up stepped WARD-PROWSE who confidently smashed the ball down the middle past Foderingham to put the visitors back in front. Wilder responded by bringing on Brewster and Norrington-Davies for Trusty and Brooks as United pressed for another leveller. With United pushing forward at one end, West
Ham almost sealed the points when a precise Bowen effort flew just over. Norwood was introduced for the closing stages, whilst Brewster was sent off after a late challenge on Emerson. After being initially booked, the decision was upgraded after referee Michael Salisbury reviewed the decision on the screen. West Ham then played out the final minutes a player light as Coufal was dismissed for a second bookable offence following a cynical trip. From the free-kick he conceded, West Ham couldn’t fully clear their lines. McAtee sent a ball back into the mix where Areola missed the ball and promptly collided with McBurnie leading to another penalty. Lukasz Fabianski replaced the injured Areola for the spot kick, but despite a lengthy delay McBURNIE remained calm, converting in front of a jubilant Shoreham end in the 103rd minute.
SWFC Club statement Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry City are shocked and saddened by the racist gesture from the stands reported by Sky Blues player Kasey Palmer during today’s game at Hillsborough. Both clubs roundly condemn any form of discrimination and abuse, and underline that there is no place for this kind of behaviour in football or our wider society. We will work together with the relevant authorities and anyone proven to be culpable will face the strictest possible sanctions from both Sheffield Wednesday and the law. We stand shoulder to shoulder with Coventry City and the football world in stamping out this abhorrent and wholly unacceptable behaviour. SWFC Chairman Dejphon Chansiri said: “We absolutely condemn the abuse reported by Kasey Palmer today and stand together with Coventry City in our clear stance that there is no place in football or society for such appalling behaviour.”
