LOCAL venues feature on annual risk register A theatre and a former cinema in South Yorkshire have been featured on a national list of threatened venues as reported by the BBC. Doncaster Grand and the Abbeydale Picture House in Sheffield are on the annual Theatres at Risk Register compiled by the Theatres Trust body. Built in 1899, Doncaster Grand was said to be so run down it would only be able to partially reopen after repair work. Abbeydale Picture House, on London Road, required urgent

repairs to its roof and ceiling, a charity said. The Theatres Trust list was started in 2006 to highlight venues threatened with closure or severe decay but with the potential to be revived. Doncaster Grand has appeared on the list each year since it started, with Abbeydale Picture House added for the second time. Ken Waight, from the Friends of Doncaster Grand Theatre group, asked for local people to “help out” and back the push to get it open once again. “We believe it would

cost up to £25m to repair and fully reopen,” he said. “The venue has been shut now for over 30 years and 60 years since it was a live theatre.” The last performance was Showboat in 1963, with the building later becoming a bingo hall and threatened with demolition in 1994. Friends of Doncaster Grand Theatre formed and helped the building gain Grade II listed status in 1995. “This theatre has great affinity with people in Doncaster and it needs that to continue,” said councillor Glyn Jones,

Doncaster’s deputy mayor. “People have a lot of time for it and want it restored.” Margaret Herbert, 91, remembers performing on-stage at the Doncaster Grand as a girl. “It’s a big stage, at one point there was 80 people on it - it was great,” she recalled. Discussing how she would feel if the venue reopened, she answered: “I’d be feeling a bit tearful but very happy.” Abbeydale Picture House once had a ballroom and a billiards

hall in the basement Built in 1920, the Abbeydale Picture House cinema had a ballroom and billiards hall in the basement, plus a lounge and café above the entrance. It became a furniture showroom in the 1970s, but was disused from 1991. Friends of Abbeydale Picture House restored the auditorium in the early 2000s and reopened the venue with a new stage in 2008. Steve Rimmer from CADS, a Sheffield charity revitalising buildings for the arts

and creative industries, said much of the space was currently unsafe for public use. “Although it’s a bad thing that the building

is on the list, it helps us drive awareness to try to save it,” he said. “There’s a lot of work that needs to be done to bring it back to being

able to open.” He said the charity was working with Sheffield City Council to try to buy it outright from a private owner.

school street installed at academy mmr vaccine sheffield singer’s weight loss advice

Pupils at an academy in Sheffield have spoken of their delight at being the first secondary school in the city to have a School Street installed. Astrea Academy Sheffield, in Burngreave, part of Astrea Academy Trust, had campaigned to improve road safety outside the school after a number of near misses at busy times. As a result, Sheffield City Council designated the area as one of its new School Streets. The initiative was designed to reduce the amount of traffic in an area, create safer school environments and a healthier atmosphere including cleaner air while helping pupils and parents adopt an active travel method to get to and from school. Andover Street, which splits Astrea Academy Secondary and Primary Academy, is now closed to traffic between 8am and 9.15am and 2.30pm and 3.45pm Monday to Friday from the junction with Fox Street. The closure of the road will allow pupils and their parents to walk or cycle to school in as safer way as possible. The installation of the School Street is part of a wider commitment by Astrea Academy Sheffield to encourage and enable active travel. The school has set up

a team of Active Travel Ambassadors with the help of ModeshiftSTARS. Students are working with staff to support the implementation of the School Street Initiative. Their role as active travel ambassadors is to encourage fellow scholars to be more active and to provide them with information of road safety. Cllr Ben Miskell said: “It’s fantastic to launch our latest School Street at Astrea Academy Sheffield. It’s the first secondary school to join the programme and hopefully the first of many more to come. Across the city we’ve worked hard to set up 12 School Streets in primary schools, as part of a hugely ambitious programme to improve road safety and encourage Active Travel in Sheffield. There are more School Streets in Sheffield than anywhere else in South Yorkshire and this is our first at a secondary school. It’s great to see young people and families react so positively to the support that we’re putting in place. Our aim has always been to keep children as safe as possible going to and coming home from school and this project does just that. It also has the added benefit of creating a healthier environment around the

school at the start and end of the day, as we work hard to improve air quality across the city. We’re looking forward to working with many more schools and communities over the coming years to bring the benefits of School Streets to even more neighbourhoods in Sheffield” Introduced back in September 2021 by Sheffield City Council, the School Streets project was brought in to make it safer and easier for children to walk or cycle to and from their school during the busiest times of the day. To date, 12 primary schools have had a School Street installed outside their main gate, including another Astrea Academy Trust school – nearby Byron Wood Primary. Lorraine Yates, Assistant Principal said: “The initiative will have a huge impact on our pupils, families and the wider community. We are already seeing the impact of fewer cars around the academy at key times of the day allowing scholars to travel to and from the academy safely. The number of near miss incidents with cars turning in the road and parking on double yellow lines meant that staff were having to direct traffic and stand in the road to ensure scholars could cross safely, this is now something we don’t have to do.”

Councils leaders and their directors of public health across England and Wales are urgently calling on parents to ensure their children have had both doses of the MMR vaccine. The calls have come in light of a recent rise in the number of cases of measles as well as a large outbreak of the infection in the West Midlands. This is a region of the country where take up of the MMR vaccine is lower than the national average, with councils and directors of public health warning this potentially puts children at greater risk of complications from measles. The Local Government Association (LGA) and the Association of Directors of Public Health (ADPH) are reminding parents and guardians to ensure their children are fully vaccinated against the disease to prevent it from spreading. Cllr David Fothergill, Chairman of the LGA’s Community Wellbeing Board said: “Councils are supporting local and national NHS vaccination campaigns to make sure people know how important it is for their family to be protected. Vaccination provides the best protection for your children, and it is not too late to come forward. We strongly encourage parents and carers to check their children are up to date with their MMR vaccinations.” Amanda Healy, Health Protection Lead for the Association of Directors of Public Health said: “Sadly, the current outbreak of measles is not surprising given the low take up of the MMR vaccine over recent years as it spreads easily between people who have not been vaccinated. Meanwhile, if anyone has missed one or both doses of the MMR vaccine, they can contact their GP practice to book an appointment. It is never too late to catch up.”

A dad from Sheffield says he now has the confidence to pursue his dream of becoming a singer after losing an incredible 9st 2lbs with Slimming World and being named Mr Sleek 2024. Mark Marsden, 31, felt his weight affected most aspects of his life and was the root cause of a back injury which left him unable to work for seven months. He says: “I’d been a big lad ever since I was about nine years old, so it was normal for me – although I was always aware that my weight held me back. As I got older, I was slow, sluggish, and had pain in my feet, legs and back all the time. I struggled to get up on time in the morning because everything was so much effort, so I was always late and even that was down to my weight. I’ve always loved singing, so alongside my day job as a car body repairer and painter, I sang at parties, weddings and other events. I had zero confidence though and would constantly be fidgeting and adjusting my clothes because I felt so uncomfortable on stage. I felt like people only saw my weight rather than hearing my voice.” A day at the funfair with his children Riley, 11, and five-year-old Amelia in 2021 proved the turning point for Mark. He says: “The kids asked me to take them on a ride at the fair. But the safety bar wouldn’t close, and three staff had to try to push the bar down with a crowd of people watching. In the

end we all got off the ride. I vowed to never feel like that again.” Just two days later, Mark walked through the doors of his local Slimming World group. He says: “I’d heard a bit about Slimming World and knew that it was about eating proper food, so it sounded like a good fit. I thought the group would be full of women and older people, so I was quite surprised to find that I wasn’t the only man there and at how welcome I was made to feel.” Now that he’s 9st lighter, Mark also has a new career. Alongside singing and DJing, he runs a café with Stacey. He says: “We have a healthier menu at the café for anyone who wants to opt for a lighter option and it’s proving popular. There’s no way I would have thought to do that before losing weight myself. I also have a lot more confidence for my singing gigs. I take opportunities I’d have turned down before and enjoy performing so much more because I know nobody it is talking about my weight – just how I sound. Music is something I’m passionate about so I now feel ready to chase my dreams and sing as much as I can. The only problem is it feels so good to walk into a shop and know something will fit me that I end up buying a new suit before every show!”

safety on roads for students

Students are to learn about the importance of making positive choices as a driver and vehicle owner, long before ever stepping foot into the driver’s seat. MIB (Motor Insurer’s Bureau) has partnered with the PSHE Association to cocreate free lessons and associated resources for Key Stage 3-5 classes. The comprehensive packs focus on the risks and consequences of uninsured driving, as well as how to spot insurance scams, along with what it means to be a responsible driver. Each of the lesson plans are accompanied by professionally designed teacher guidance, engaging PowerPoints and student facing resources. The new resources, available for all teachers to download for free from the PSHE Association website, support MIB’s long-term vision to end uninsured driving for good by educating the next generation of drivers. Uninsured driving is a problem that seriously affects both the lives of those involved in road accidents, as well as the UK economy. With someone in the UK being hit by an uninsured of hit-and-run driver every 20 minutes, MIB estimates that the cost to the economy is nearly

£2.4 billion a year in emergency services, medical care, loss of productivity and human costs. Ali Stripling, of MIB, said: “We have an opportunity, with this early intervention through education, to make a positive difference by improving awareness for the drivers of tomorrow. That’s why we are proud to have teamed-up with the PSHE Association to co-create our “Staying safe on the roads” resources for Teachers. Together, we can improve the road safety knowledge and awareness of young people and make roads safer for all.” Elizabeth Laming of PSHE Association, said: ““It’s important to equip young people with the skills they need to travel safely, especially as they become more independent. In addition to helping students stay safe on the roads and ensuring they understand their individual responsibilities, these lessons also help to develop students’ critical thinking, risk assessment and decision-making skills.” Teachers can download the lesson packs for free at https://pshe-association. org.uk/resource/mib

While the Festival of the Outdoors aims to encourage city residents to participate in the great outdoors, it is also a prime opportunity to showcase Sheffield’s unique destination offer as The Outdoor City, to potential visitors and boost tourism. Cllr Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Development and Skills Committee at Sheffield City

Council, said: “As the Outdoor City, Sheffield is the UK's leading destination for outdoor adventure and city culture wrapped into one. “Greenspace is a vital part of Sheffield’s culture, and influences much of life for people in Sheffield. The Festival of the Outdoors is a great opportunity for the people of Sheffield, and our many visitors, to enjoy the UK’s greenest city.” Sheffield is one of very few major cities with a national park within its boundary, as one third of the city sits within the Peak District. The city also boasts a whopping 61% greenspace with 13 city parks, including Sheffield Botanical Gardens, the city centre’s Peace

Garden’s and our Animal Farm in Graves Park. Sheffield is also widely regarded as the UK’s climbing capital and home to the only city centre mountain bike trail in the UK at Parkwood Springs. 2024 marks the fifth edition of the Festival of the Outdoors, which first took place in 2019 having evolved from a single weekend of activity, formerly known as The Outdoor City Weekender. JOINT CAMPAIGN TO LOWER BEER DUTY In a new joint campaign launched last week, independent breweries and beer consumers called for the Chancellor to Make Draught Relief 20% and increase the lower rate of duty for draught beer from its current 9.2% while at the same time freezing the rest of the alcohol duty levels. The Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA), the Independent Family Brewers of Britain (IFBB) and the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) have jointly written to

the Chancellor to make the case ahead of the Spring Budget on 6th March where he is due to make a decision on beer duty levels from the summer. In the Autumn Statement last November, the Chancellor chose to freeze beer duty until August to allow the new Alcohol Duty System introduced in 2023 to embed. A key part of the new system is the Draught Relief, which allows the Treasury to charge a lower duty rate on beer and certain other alcoholic products sold in draught in pubs. The groups believe that a more substantial cut of 20% on draught beer would encourage people to support their local community pubs and drink in the supervised environment instead of at home and help secure jobs and

This is the with hundreds of pubs being lost in 2023. SIBA Chief Executive Andy Slee said: “Pubs and breweries already pay way over their fair share of tax and this is the Chancellor’s opportunity to give the sector a boost in his Budget in March. Increasing the Draught Relief would mark a major milestone coming one year after the new alcohol duty system went live, which gave the Chancellor the unprecedented power to charge a lower rate of duty on draught beer.” CAMRA Chairman Nik Antona said: “The support of pub goers

At a time when the sector is still recovering from the pandemic and trading conditions continue to remain challenging, increasing Draught Relief to 20% would be a welcome development for pubs this summer.”

On Saturday 3rd February, the Barnsley Zine Fair will take place at Barnsley Civic, in a unique collaboration with Barnsley

and printed. Although methods of production have changed slightly over the decades, it still remains very much a DIY publication and a true alternative to mainstream media. The fair will feature 20+ local and national zine makers, writers and illustrators. Barnsley Zine Fair takes place on Saturday 3rd February, in the

gallery at Barnsley Civic, 10:30am – 4:00pm.

BLADES DUMPED OUT OF THE FA CUP OWLS LEAVE IT LATE United’s Emirates FA Cup adventure for this season came to an end at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon, against an impressive Brighton & Hove Albion outfit. Having fallen two goals behind in the first half United rallied before the break with Gustavo Hamer and Will Osula scoring to restore parity, but the visitors netted three times without reply in the second period to progress to round five. Goalkeeper Grbić was handed his Blades debut against the Seagulls, one of five changes made by boss Wilder. Archer, Norwood, Osborn and

Norrington-Davies were all restored to the starting XI, with Foderingham, Robinson, Souza, McAtee and Brooks dropping to the bench. United started positively and forced a couple of corners in quick succession, prior to Ferguson having a goal ruled out for offside after he’d rose highest to convert a Hinshelwood cross, as Norwood was cautioned for a late tackle. On 14 minutes though, the visitors in the front in spectacular style as BUONANOTTE fired into the top corner from distance giving Grbić no chance. The home side looked for

I WANT TO CONTINUE IMPRESSING – CLUCAS Rotherham United midfielder Sam Clucas believes an extended run in the team has been crucial in helping him find his best form. The 33-year-old was snapped up by the Millers in the summer following the expiration of his contract with fellow second tier outfit Stoke City and was beginning to find his feet in the side before suffering an injury setback, which kept him out of action for over a month. Clucas returned to action when the Millers visited Leicester City on 23rd December and has started in the last five outings in all competitions for Leam Richardson’s side. The former Premier League operator has impressed with his performances in the middle of the park and saw himself nominated for the December Goal of the Month gong for his stunning volley in the 1-1 draw against Sunderland and is hoping to continue his rich vein of form when the team return to action. “It has been really good to get back to playing week in, week out as I have recently and hopefully I can stay injury free and maintain my spot,” Clucas told www. themillers.co.uk after being asked about his extended run in the side. “I’d obviously been doing work in the off season after my contract finished at Stoke, but it’s nothing like coming into a proper club and doing short and sharp movements. “The staff knew that and they really helped me ease

an instant response but from Osborn’s through ball, Osula saw an effort blocked and Hamer saw his follow up charged down by Juilo. Moments before the half hour, Brighton doubled their lead from the penalty spot, as PEDRO converted having been fouled by Bogle. But HAMER reduced the deficit, firing home after Verbruggen could only parry a low cross from OSULA, who then went from provider to scorer as he headed home from Bogle’s cross, with both strikes overcoming lengthy VAR checks for offside. Unfortunately, though,

the visitors seized the initiative after the interval and PEDRO scored his second penalty of the afternoon after Bogle was penalised for handball by referee Singh Gill and the former Watford striker completed his hat-trick on 68 minutes firing low and hard past Grbić, after the Blades had made a triple change and forced a flurry of corners. The tie was seemingly over but the Blades went until the end with Trusty heading wide from a Norwood corner and McAtee striking the underside of the bar, but the last action saw substitute WELBECK score a fifth for Brighton after he raced clear of Larouci.

myself in, unfortunately I picked up an injury just as I’d started to feel like I was getting my sharpness back, which was really frustrating. “I’ve worked hard and got back to fitness, now I want to stay clear of injury and continue the form I’ve been showing recently. “As a player, I think I’m someone that needs to be playing regularly to find my best form. I’m a box to box midfielder that wants to work really hard for the team and chip in with goals and assists, again I’m at my best when I’m getting regular time on the pitch, so I’m grateful that the gaffer has put faith in me.” The Millers were due to travel to take on Ipswich Town this weekend, but their opponents involvement in the Emirates FA Cup means that they will host Maidstone United at Portman Road instead. This means Richardson’s side are next in action when they lock horns with promotion-chasing Southampton in the second tier on Saturday 3rd February. The Saints are currently on a club record unbeaten run of 21 games, but Clucas insists that in the second tier, anyone can beat anyone. “This is one of the few top leagues across Europe where everyone does beat everyone and we’re no different to that, we know that we can beat the very best this league has to offer on our day.” “We know that Southampton are a really good team and we respect them for what they are, but we’re at home, which is a huge plus. “Every game in this league is tough, but we still have that belief that we can go and get points.”

ORCHARD PARK

Coventry came close to an unwanted treble until Wednesday scored right at the last to force yet another clash between these two familiar faces. For the third time inside a month, the Owls and the Sky Blues went head to head – this time in the Emirates FA Cup – and new recruit Victor Torp had the Midlanders on the way to victory with a peach of a strike on the verge of half time. But Wednesday had

the final say as Djeidi Gassama crowned an impressive performance with a late, late leveller. Danny Röhl and Mark Robins made six changes apiece following the second match of the trilogy last weekend, with the Wednesday boss handing teenage goalkeeper Pierce Charles a maiden senior appearance. Elsewhere, Iké Ugbo made his full debut, while Momo Diaby was given a starting shirt. Both sides showed attacking intent from the off. Matt Godden spooned over the bar at one end before the lively Gassama fired wide at the other. Kasey Palmer mirrored the earlier attempt from Godden as Coventry

McCann seeking answers over drops in performance level Grant McCann is determined to get to the bottom of the disparity between performances at Rovers this season. McCann was frustrated by the manner of the showing against league leaders Stockport County, who cruised to a 5-1 triumph at the Eco-Power Stadium. The Rovers manager admitted to being baffled by the dip in performance level from the win over Wigan Athletic in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy. “It’s been a theme of the season - we can be so good one game and then drop massively in the next,” he said. “We were so good against Wigan in the second half of the last game and then we dropped to these levels. “I don’t know why. Myself and the staff are questioning what the week leading up was like. We felt it was really good and probably one of the best we’ve had this season with players coming back from injury, a behindclosed-doors game and getting a breather into a few of the lads as well. “I actually don’t know myself and I can’t put my finger on exactly why we looked so lethargic and so slow out of the blocks. We just never gave ourselves an opportunity with the way we conceded the goals and we looked toothless as well. “We don’t give ourselves any hope or chance conceding the way we did and it looked like it knocked us once we

countered from a pressing Owls dynamic. Gassama, making lightning bursts from the engine room, was the best player on the pitch in an opening period full of enterprise. Time and again the Frenchman terrorised the Sky Blues’ defence, who struggled to combat Gassama’s pace. Coventry had threats of their own, though, as was evidenced when Josh Eccles volleyed over the top from a clever set piece. But the visitors went one better a minute before the break, and a moment to remember for Torp. The Dane picked up possession 25 yards out and unleashed a blistering hit that flew past Charles to give his side the upper hand. Ellis Simms missed a giltedged chance to double the lead immediately after the restart before the Owls hit back with Ugbo rattling the woodwork

from distance. Ugbo was inches away moments later, clipping a cute ball from Gassama on to the roof of the net. The cup-tie calmed as the second half wore on. Coventry seemed content to play on the break as Wednesday pushed for an equaliser but Ben Wilson remained untroubled between the Sky Blues’ sticks. That was until the 85th minute as the Owls finally made the breakthrough. Gassama cut in on the angle and fired a low drive that shaded the post and beat the scrambling Wilson. Still there was time for both goalkeepers to come to the rescue in a grandstand finish. First, Wilson instinctively denied Ashley Fletcher with his feet, then Charles thwarted Jamie Allen from close quarters before the curtain came down on the Owls v Coventry part III – and part IV follows the week after next.

conceded the second and the third. “Stockport are a really good team, they’re top of the league but we’ve given them three goals in the first half. “There’s a lot for us to digest and look at from this game and we need to put it right at Bradford on Tuesday in the quarter-finals of the Trophy.”
