new report highlights‘moment of opportunity’ for sheffield culture sector

Ambitions to develop Sheffield’s cultural offer and ensure the city is creative, prosperous, diverse and full of opportunity for its residents, have moved forward.

A review of Sheffield’s culture sector has highlighted areas of growth and opportunity for the city, including strengths in its grass roots offering and independent businesses showcased.

Some of the city’s larger, anchor institutions were also recognised for their acclaimed national and international profile.

However, the city also faces challenges, with the report outlining that Sheffield must ramp up cultural investment and attract more funding for the sector.

More must also be done to champion diversity and inclusion and better reflect the city’s residents and creators.

The report also indicates that young people who face barriers accessing culture must be better supported.

The review will be presented to councillors in an Economic Skills and Development Committee meeting,

last week (Wednesday 21 February 2024), where next steps will be considered.

Councillor Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Skills and Development Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “We want the cultural sector in Sheffield to be thriving, inclusive and diverse.

“That’s why the Committee has commissioned an in-depth report to help us drive forward our ambitions for the city. The audit we are discussing today is the first step in that process,

with a new Culture Strategy to follow later this year.”

The audit was commissioned as part of the new Sheffield Culture Strategy 2024, which is being developed to address some of the longstanding obstacles faced by creatives living and working in the city. The strategy is being championed by the Culture Collective and Culture Consortium, and funded by Sheffield City Council, the University of Sheffield and Arts Council England, and aims to tackle to

obstacles laid out in the review.

The sector audit is just the first phase of work being done ahead of the development of the strategy, and will help to shape it, along with the outcomes of consultation with both the public and Individuals working in the sector.

rare Def leppard single is an eBay hit for st luke’s hospice

A rare first edition EP by Sheffield rock legends Def Leppard was a hit for St Luke’s Hospice when it sold for more than £1,000 with the charity’s eBay shop.

The Def Leppard EP was the 1979 debut self-produced recording by the iconic Sheffield Heavy Metal band.

Only a thousand copies were initially produced, with lead singer Joe Elliott and his mum gluing the sleeves themselves.

Released in January 1979, the single was sold for just £1 at shows and was distributed to anyone the band felt could help them gain exposure - Elliott even jumped on stage at Sheffield

University during a John Peel DJ session to hand-deliver a copy which did then get Radio 1 air time.

The team at the St Luke’s eBay store were, therefore, delighted when one of the few surviving copies of the Def Leppard EP was donated for sale and the bids started to come in, with a launch price of £600 quickly reaching £1,022 and going to a buyer in Switzerland.

“Our team is always looking through the many donations we receive for those very special items which we believe will make the most money for St Luke’s through our fantastic eBay site,” said the charity’s

Ecommerce Development Manager Sarah Conrad.

“This was especially exciting as Def Leppard are Sheffield legends and we knew there would be a lot of local interest but the joy of eBay is that it’s global and so the interest was even greater than we anticipated.

“It’s just one more example of why you should look at the St Luke’s eBay page – because you never know what great bargains you might pick up!”

Darren Dowle saw his own stem cells at the NHS Blood and Transplant centre he helped build – they will be used to help save his life.

Darren, 58, visited the new NHSBT Barnsley centre. He worked on the creation of the centre in 2018. Darren now has myeloma, a type of bone marrow cancer. During the visit saw his own frozen stem cells, which were collected by the NHSBT’s Therapeutic Apheresis Services Unit in Sheffield. Darren will receive his stem cells back following chemotherapy. The chemotherapy will kill his cancer cells but could also damage his bone marrow, which is where cells are made, putting him at risk of bleeding and infections. The reinfusion of his own stem cells should help his bone marrow recover within a week or two. He said: “The visit was so interesting. Not many people get that chance. It was unbelievable. I helped build it. More people need to understand how stem cells work. When I went in to have my cells collected, there were people were just going in to donate. Young people. I thought that was brilliant. Just to help other people out.” He added: “I want to carry on as long as I can. The treatment means everything.”

NHSBT seen a rise in the number of stem cell collections we’re asked to provide. NHS Blood and Transplant made 498 stem cell collections in Yorkshire in 2020 and 875 in 2023. Dr Khaled El-Ghariani said: “There are various reasons why we have seen more stem cell collections in recent years. Clinical skills have improved. Transplants are now offered to

people such as older age groups and people with clinical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, who did not have transplants years ago. More indications are also emerging, for example people with illnesses such as sickle cell - this was not the case years ago. We also have a bigger donor registry now. Darren will have his own cells back but for many other conditions we need a donor to provide the cells. We still need more donors to join the British Bone Marrow Registry, especially those of south Asian and African Caribbean heritage.”

Stem cells transplants are mostly used when there is an issue stopping your bone marrow from working properly. They are mostly used for blood cancers such as leukaemia. NHS Blood and Transplant especially needs men under 40 to join the British Bone Marrow Registry (BBMR) – they are more likely to be able to provider high numbers of healthy stem cells with less potential complications – and also black and Asian men and women under 40 due to the shortage of ethnically matched donors for people in those populations. This can be simply done by joining the register.

The Barnsley centre opened in 2021 and provides blood, organ, stem cell and other related medical products to 39 hospitals in the north of England. The many teams and functions at the centre include specialist training laboratories, cellular and molecular therapies, blood and organ compatibility testing and specialist nurses in organ donation.

A major research project designed to improve the lives of people across South Yorkshire has been launched today (Tuesday, 20 February) by the region’s largest local grant giving charity.

The Vital Signs survey has been developed by South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation (SYCF), with the support of South Yorkshire Mayor, Oliver Coppard, and his office. Members of the public can provide responses about their local area linked to ten key themes.

These include Stronger Communities, Work and the Local Economy, Education and Learning, Disadvantage and Inequality, Housing and Homelessness, Crime and Safety, Arts and Heritage, Natural Environment, Healthy Living and Mental Health. The survey results will feed into SYCF’s Vital Signs research - a ‘healthcheck’ which identifies the hidden needs and priorities of local communities across Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster.

Responses will also be collated through a series of special community consultations and existing statistical data.

Ruth Willis, CEO of South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation, said: “Understanding the needs of a community and the issues it faces is the first step to being able to solve them. Our Vital Signs survey is aimed at taking the pulse of South Yorkshire communities. The results give us an accurate view on where our funds should be directed and support us to provide targeted interventions to tackle critical issues affecting our communities. We want the report to be thoughtprovoking and, not just guide our funds, but enable us to develop collaborative working amongst funders within the region to address community needs. Participation in the research is vital in creating,

shaping, and implementing community-driven change.”

Since 1986, South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation has made grants of more than £36 million to local groups, individuals, charities and organisations across the region. Professor Chris Booth-Mayblin, chair of South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation, said: ‘We support community groups across South Yorkshire by giving grants to help build thriving communities. To do this we need the public’s help to identify key priorities and hidden needs. So, we’re encouraging as many people as possible to help their community by filling in the Vital Signs survey. Their voice is important to us. By supporting and sharing Vital Signs, they will help us create a positive impact in the local community. Together, we can work towards identifying areas that require attention and develop strategies to enhance the quality of life for everyone in our region.”

Vital Signs is carried out by South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation every three years. The results from the 2021 project specifically highlighted issues facing young people getting into work or training. From this, SYCF funded projects which helping vulnerable, underrepresented and marginalised young people into employment. This included the hugely successful ‘Moving on Up’ grants programme which has awarded £158,000 over three years to organisations addressing unemployment for young people aged 14-30 in South Yorkshire. Some of the projects funded through Moving on Up included Roundabout, The Suits Works, Serenity and Work Wise Foundation. The survey will not ask you for any identifiable data and all answers provided will be anonymous.

Rising talent from the world of Rugby League kicked off a life-saving Yorkshire Ambulance’s Service campaign to improve cardiac arrest survival rates across the region.

Fifty players taking part in England Rugby League’s Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DiSE) learnt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to mark the launch of the Restart a Heart campaign earlier this month. The players, aged between 16 and 18, have the potential to reach the highest level of the women’s game, and were taught the life-saving skill by staff and volunteers from Yorkshire Ambulance Service in Huddersfield. All secondary schools across Yorkshire can now sign up to provide their students with free life-saving training on Restart a Heart Day when it is expected that over 35,000 young people will learn CPR in one day.

Jason Carlyon, Community Engagement Manager with Yorkshire Ambulance Service, said: “We were pleased to teach CPR to these talented young players and would like to thank them for supporting the launch of our Restart a Heart campaign. A cardiac arrest can happen to anyone of any age at any time and unfortunately we have seen numerous highprofile incidents involving sports professionals so it’s crucial that we engage with groups like this to teach vital skills and also raise awareness about the

importance of CPR to a wider audience.”

The Rugby Football League’s DiSE Manager, Conor Meese, added: “We were delighted to welcome Yorkshire Ambulance Service to deliver this life-saving training to our DiSE students. No one will ever be able to predict when or where a cardiac arrest will happen, so I think it’s important we’re proactive and educate our players on what to do should it ever occur. The staff and students found the session really informative and eye opening, so I would encourage as many secondary schools as possible to get involved in this year’s Restart a Heart Day.”

DiSE student, Olivia Atherton, added: “During a game, the physiotherapist and doctor might be on the other side of the pitch so I think it’s important that we know how to react to a cardiac arrest and, after this session, I definitely feel more confident that I would be able to help should the worst ever happen.”

Secondary schools can register for Restart a Heart Day 2024 by completing the form at https://survey.yas.nhs. uk/s/Restart-a-HeartDay-SchoolRegistration2024/ before the closing date on Friday 19 April. For more information visit, https:// restartaheart.yas.nhs.uk/

MR sTRaw’s HOUsE RE-OpENs!

Following its annual winter conservation clean, Mr Straw’s House will reopen to the public from Thursday 7 March. Most National Trust properties inspire thoughts of historic mansions, wealth and grandeur. However, tucked away in a private cul-de-sac in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, you’ll find Mr Straw’s House; the National Trust’s first small domestic property, acquired in 1990. Mr Straw’s House is a preserved 1920s period home of a grocer’s family, virtually unchanged since the Straws moved there in 1923. A true step back in time, come and discover more about the family who refused to modernise. Visitors can spend time in the display rooms, hear nostalgic stories of the Straws, and get a glimpse of some of the collection usually hidden away in drawers and cupboards. There is also the opportunity to chat with the Collections & House team about how they care for over 30,000

treasured possessions and ordinary domestic items that can still be seen exactly where their owners left them. The theme in the house this year is ‘A simpler life at a slower pace: the Straws, their hobbies and technology’. Visitors can learn more about how the family lived without many of the technologies we take for granted, and how they spent their leisure time without it. The house is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 7 March – 1 November, 09.00 – 15.00, as well as various Saturdays during June & July. Admission is by pre-booked timed self-led tours. Visits are in small groups of four people only, to help with the conservation work at the property. Please book through the Mr Straw’s House website or by calling the Booking Office on 0344 249 1895. Admission is £8 for adults, £4 for children and free to National Trust members. Car parking is available in the orchard opposite the house.

immersive atmosphere and we can’t wait for the public to join us for the 19th edition of the festival.”

Committed to sustainability, ShAFF encourages attendees to travel via public transport or bicycle, with convenient access from Sheffield’s mainline train station and ample nearby parking for those driving. Although there will not be any official winners from industry judges this year, the public are being encouraged to vote for the ‘People’s Choice’ Award which is sponsored by Sheffield’s burrito masters, Street Food Chef. ShAFF is just one exciting component of Sheffield’s Festival of the Outdoors, a celebration of outdoor culture. March 2024 will also include the Climbing Works International Festival, a bumper edition of the Pollen Market which will include urban canoeing and a skate jam, and a unique cycling event, the Park Hill Uprise:Urban Hill Climb. In addition to showcasing all the wonderful outdoor activities connected to Sheffield, this festival aims to inspire participation. The Sheffield Adventure Film Festival offers a great opportunity to encourage people of all ages to go out and find the adventure for themselves!

Sheffield Adventure Film Festival returns for its 18th year at the Sheffield Cathedral showcasing the Best in Adven-
Cinema on the
and
of March 2024. This film festival is a headline feature of, ‘The Festival of the Outdoors’, a month-long event celebrating Sheffield’s unique position as ‘The Outdoor City’.

to make the event sustainable for the future.

Festival founder Stephen Rich explains: “The fencing, toilets, stewards, medics, badged stewards and the health & safety officals costing in excess of £10,000. Plus,

with buses being disrupted on the day and crowds exceeding over 15 thousand people at our last festival in 2022, we needed dramatic changes for all concerned.”

“We have found a fantastic new double sized venue and a sponsor, Mr Mike Snow and as he has most of what we need on site, we can now become bigger, better and lower our costs.”

“We’ll be working with a wellestablished person on his own site just 400 yards from our old home at Greenhill Park, at The Bowshaw Showground, with a new name - LOWEDGES & S8 FESTIVAL.”

“From Sunday August 11th we will be hosting our festival on a much larger scale, with a new chairman, secretary and treasurer on board plus founder Stephen

Rich helping and advising for the first 2 years until the new format is established.”

“Plus we will be self-sufficient as well, assuring our event year on year.

“We were saved by the Local Area Committee of the Lib/Dems, Mr Simon Clement , Richard Shaw and Sophie Thornton. All three helped to secure a £5,000 grant and have worked to establish this new arrangement, ensuring our business for the future. We would like to thank them.”

“We will have the usual Music, Dance and Birds of Prey in Arena 1; Arena 2 will be the Esacafeld Re-enactment, Arena 3 will be the Dog Show, plus Classic Cars and Bikes plus the Farmers Market area, 300 Car Boots in their own area and a Funfair by James Tuby and many other stalls. Additionally twelve Hot Food stalls featuring food from around the world.”

“Stalls are still wanted such as Classic Cars and Bikes etc. Please send all enquiries of interest to: stephen. rich@hotmail.co.uk.”

It is with a heavy heart that CADS (Creative Arts Development Space), a leading arts charity in Sheffield, announces the closure of the Abbeydale Picture House, a building of significant historical and cultural importance to the city. This announcement includes the immediate closure of the venue, including the iconic Grade II listed auditorium which has remained inoperable due to extensive damage to the ceiling. Despite concerted efforts to sustain operations, the ‘Speakeasy Bar’ and ‘Fly Tower’ venues that have been functional within the premises are also closing, as it has proven unsustainable against the backdrop of the overall costs required to run the building effectively.

It is important to note, however, that ‘The Picture House Social’, a separate business entity operating within the Abbeydale Picture House complex, remains open and fully operational. This establishment continues to

welcome patrons, offering a space for social gatherings and events in line with its ongoing commitment to the Sheffield community.

The Abbeydale Picture House has been a beacon of arts and culture, operated by CADS under a 25-year lease, of which only 7 years have been completed. The journey to restore and revitalise the building faced a major setback two years ago with the discovery of an unsafe ceiling, significantly impairing the use of the main auditorium and escalating the financial strain on the charity. Despite exploring multiple avenues for funding and support with considerable support from Sheffield City Council and including bids to the Community Ownership Fund and consultations with notable organisations such as the Music Venues Trust, The National Trust, and The Theatres Trust, the necessary resources to secure and repair the building have remained elusive.

While parts of the building, such as the ‘fly tower’ and a creatively envisioned ‘speakeasy’ bar, have been utilised for various events and activities, these efforts have not sufficed to cover the running costs. The closure of this cherished venue underscores

a challenging period for Sheffield’s cultural scene, reminiscent of the fate of other historical buildings in the city. Steve Rimmer, CADS board director and founder, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported the charity’s vision over the years: “The decision to close the Abbeydale Picture House has not been made lightly. Throughout this journey, we have faced numerous challenges in our quest to preserve this significant piece of Sheffield’s heritage. It is with deep regret that we must pause our operations at this location. However, it’s important to emphasise that CADS is not leaving; our tenancy agreement remains firmly in place, and with it, our hope and determination to one day reopen the building. We are committed to continuing our mission of restoring the Abbeydale Picture House for future generations, ensuring its legacy and the cultural enrichment it brings to Sheffield; however, we can’t afford to self-fund a loss-making venue at this time. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Sheffield community, our supporters, and partners who have stood by us. This chapter may be pausing, but our commitment to Sheffield’s arts and cultural landscape is as strong as ever.”

There were a number of positives in defeat as United battled gamely against Wolves and arguably deserved at least a point from what was at times an open contest.

Unfortunately though, Pablo Sarabia’s header on the half hour proved decisive for the hosts, despite the Blades having much the better of the second half. United made four changes for the clash in Wolverhampton. Grbić was recalled between the sticks, whilst Trusty, Brewster and Norwood all started, as Foderingham, Osborn and Osula dropping to the bench, where they

were joined by teenage defender Sasnauskas.

The hosts dominated the opening exchanges, enjoying the majority of the ball and subsequently territory, although Grbić was never fully tested. On 19 minutes, Robinson’s long throw created two chances in a matter of seconds, as Dawson blocked Brewster’s effort, before Sá tipped behind from the same player on the rebound.

On the break the Blades looked dangerous, Brewster latched on to Bogle’s flick on only to fire over under pressure from the retreating Toti, before McAtee appeared to be fouled on the

edge of the box after the aforementioned striker had got the better of Dawson. The Manchester City loanee then got in behind, but his effort was comfortably gathered by Sá. But on the half hour mark, it was the home side who took the lead with SARABIA heading home from an Ait-Nouri cross, following a spell where United had enjoyed the better of the game and chances.

Before the break, Toti saw a shot blocked by Trusty, as Sarabia fired over in the next phase of play. The Blades started the second period on the front foot and forced a couple of early

corners, before McAtee dragged an effort wide of the far post having fashioned space for himself. At the other end, there were appeals for a penalty from the home supporters after ball caught the arm of Souza. With the hour approaching, Brewster was denied by Sá again, this time from McAtee’s cross after a driving run by Hamer switched defensive into attack. After Sarabia had threatened a second with a curling effort, Semedo was booked for crudely halting the progress of Brewster, with Ahmedhodžić also cautioned following a

lengthy discussion with referee Bond, as Osborn’s introduction prompted a change of shape.

With nine minutes remaining an excellent team move saw Ahmedhodžić get to the byline, but with Brewster ready to pounce, Dawson produced a vital header.

Chasing the game and looking likely to find a goal, Osula, McBurnie and Tom Davies were summoned by the manager in a bid to rescue at least a share of the spoils, but despite five minutes of added time, it proved in vain, although McAtee’s flick from a Robinson long throw was almost converted.

BETTER PERFORMANCE, SAME RESULT WE NEED CONSISTENCY IN OUR LEVELS AND HABITSRICHARDSON

Rotherham United head coach Leam Richardson once again signposted a number of positives following his side’s narrow defeat at the hands of Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

It was the visitors who made all of the early running at MATRADE Loftus Road Stadium and they were rewarded for doing so when Tom Eaves netted his second early goal in as many games to give the Millers the lead.

A second half comeback from the R’s meant that the Millers’ tough run away from the comfort of AESSEAL New York Stadium continued, but as was the case at Ipswich Town in midweek, there were a number of shoots of optimism from another energetic performance.

“It’s disappointing in that we’ve got a horrible habit of going ahead in games and are doing very well but then the fine margins go the other way.

“You can see it affects them so much when you’re in a situation like ours.

“The first half was very even and I thought we finished it very strongly but we need to stay consistent in our levels and habits in the second half

“I think we were 1-0 up and could have gone 2-0 up and possibly taken the game to them, but when you’re in that habit you perhaps go two or three steps back rather than two or three forward as I would like.

“We want to go around and make a good fist of it, we’re just falling short of it in certain areas.

“We need more belief and consistency in our habits. When we’re on top, we should impose ourselves even more. There’s still belief there.

“There’s a hunger there to compete as you can see. It’s easy to roll over and lose the games 4-0 or 5-0 as we possibly were before but that’s certainly not in my nature. We want to turn performances into results.”

FOCUS ON OUR PERFROMANCE

With results elsewhere keeping the basement battle at boiling point, Danny Röhl has stressed the need for his players to focus solely on themselves.

Victories for Millwall, Huddersfield and QPR highlighted the need for the Wednesday win delivered against Bristol City.

Röhl told swfc.co.uk:

“We must focus on our performance. Of course, we know about the results everywhere else straight away, but I said to the guys ‘focus on yourself, focus on yourself’.

“We have 12 finals to go and if we keep on going the way we are,

CONFIDENCE IS ONLY GROWING: MCCANN

Grant McCann believes the confidence in the camp is only growing and driving Rovers on to a strong finish to the season.

Rovers stretched their unbeaten run to five matches with a 1-0 triumph over AFC Wimbledon.

And McCann says there is a new found feeling of strength within the group.

“I think we’re playing with confidence and that helps,” he said. “We feel good about ourselves at this moment in time.

“We feel strong in all departments, the bench is strong with players missing out on matchday squads and that helps keep the competition healthy.

“I think people are in good form. Hakeeb [Adelakun] is in tremendous form for example. I was gutted he got the deadleg when he did because he was looking

REMINDER OF TICKETING T&Cs AHEAD OF LOCAL DERBY AT NYS

Following on from a recent fixture at AESSEAL New York Stadium during which a number of away supporters were identified and subsequently removed from home areas, Rotherham United would like to emphasise that the club operates a zero tolerance policy on ticket purchases being

we will have the best chance of staying in the Championship.

“We have won three games from four, the atmosphere is amazing, and even the game we lost at Leicester, the fans gave the players a standing ovation because they recognise what we are trying to do.

“Again today, my players gave everything, the way we managed the game with 10 men was very professional and solid and made sure we took the points.”

Röhl had no complaints with Di’Shon Bernard’s red card for two bookable offences late on against the Robins. The defender will now sit out next Saturday’s derby clash at Rotherham. He said: “I think the decision was correct.

We cannot have any arguments about this.

This is football, these things happen in games.

“We will have other options, we have Bambo, Dominic is back with us and hopefully Akin will also be ready.

“We have a big week coming up with teams of different profiles in Rotherham, Plymouth and Leeds.

“So we continue to do what we are doing, we work hard, we train hard and take those principles into games.”

strong and sharp and could have added more to the game.

“I was pleased with the team effort and the ruthlessness in both boxes, defending and attacking. It was really pleasing.”

McCann revealed after the game that he had set his squad the target of producing the best form in Sky Bet League Two in the run to the end of the campaign. Across the last five matches, only Mansfield Town have been in better form in the division.

“I said a few weeks ago that we want to finish the season as strong as we can,” he said. “We had 18 games left. I showed those 18 games to the boys and told them I wanted them to finish top of that 18 game table.

“We’ve started that quite well with 11 points from the first five games and we just want to continue to build and see where we go.”

made on behalf of away supporters in home areas. It goes without saying that away fans being located in home areas has the potential to compromise the safety of our supporters – the safeguarding of which is always at the forefront of their priorities as a club. The club has since been able to identify and ban a number of fans who have been in breach of their ticket regulations by intentionally purchasing tickets in the home end on behalf of travelling supporters, following the sell-out of an away end.
