Tramlines granTed approval To remain aT HillsborougH park

Tramlines Festival has been given Council approval to continue taking place at Hillsborough Park.

Tramlines is one of the UK’s longest running, citybased music festivals and a highlight in Sheffield’s year-round calendar of events and festivals.

It has taken place in Hillsborough Park since 2018, when the initial licence was granted. The festival has been hugely successful in those years and in a report to the Charity Trustee SubCommittee it was outlined the contribution the festival makes to building Sheffield’s brand and reputation.

Festival organisers have also been working to ensure Tramlines benefits both Hillsborough residents and the wider community since it moved to the park. This has been done through a number of initiatives, including fundraising for local charities and donating tickets to residents in the area.

However, following heavy rain last year, Sheffield City Council have carried out a comprehensive review of the licence agreement for the event.

This included ensuring there is clear agreement on how the park will be protected from any damage and how

decisions around cancelling the event will be taken.

Approval to enter into a revised licence agreement was given at a committee meeting on 4th March 2024, which includes a fee schedule for the next five events in Hillsborough Park.

Councillor Ian Auckland, Chair of the Charity Trustee Sub-Committee at Sheffield City Council, said:

“Tramlines Festival bring enormous benefits to the city and is enjoyed and celebrated by many.

“However, it is crucial that we protect our parks and it’s great to see that we have revised our licence

agreement to reflect this. We want Hillsborough Park to be enjoyed by everyone for many years to come. Whether that is by festival-goers, or the local people who use the park every other day of the year.

“Importantly the committee made the decision that holding Tramlines supported the park’s charitable objectives.”

As part of the agreement, £10,000 of the annual fee for Tramlines will be used to improve, replace, or install equipment or facilities to advance the park.

At the committee meeting, it was stressed

that this money should be used to make improvements and not for routine maintenance, so park users are able to see the benefits of holding the festival in Hillsborough. Hillsborough Park has been cited as the only city park with the capacity to host an event of this size and nature, with the main field being able to host an audience of around 35,000. Transport links also make the park a good option.

If the festival was not to take place at Hillsborough, it would move out of the city all together.

HOspITal RadIO IN fIGHT fOR sURvIval

Sheffield Hospital Radio (who’s registered charity name is, Hospital Broadcasting Sheffield) has been in existence for 48 years since 1976, providing entertainment and companionship to Sheffield’s hospital patients.

Unfortunately, the service is currently off air after the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust deemed the studio to be unsafe under their Health and Safety considerations.

However, after 2 years of searching for a suitable space, the Trust has identified a new studio location on the Royal Hallamshire Hospital site which will allow the service to recommence this year after being converted to a broadcast studio area. The team of volunteers are now in full steam ahead mode to raise the desperately required funds to buy and install new equipment and convert the new location into a broadcast studio.

The current equipment is over 20 years old, is breaking down, there’s no spare parts and it will not survive for another 20 years and therefore must be replaced. The station members have been actively fundraising towards a target of £10,000 during the time the radio station has been off air. The fundraising endeavours have included collecting donations from roadshows at various venues across the city, car boot sales and appeals over social media. The money raised so far will unfortunately not cover the necessary refurbishment cost to the new studio space and the equipment

needed to restart the service. The station is looking for sponsors or donations to help raise the remaining funds to get Sheffield Hospital Radio back on the air. Various mini projects have been identified within the overall project that businesses can sponsor such as the mixing desk, the woodwork, decorating, broadband setup costs to send our programmes out to the internet etc. Local businesses adding their support to raising the remaining funds will help see a swift return of the hospital radio service to Sheffield’s patients. Sponsors will be given credit on air, on our website and over our social media channels of Facebook, X (formally Twitter) LinkedIn and Instagram. Currently the service is very kindly supported by Morrisons, TecSec, Motability Sheffield, Westfield Health and Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre.

Professor Chris Morley, Chief Nurse, said: “Hospital radio has been a part of patient’s stay both here in Sheffield and across the NHS throughout the years with committed volunteers putting many hours into making it interesting and enjoyable. However, we know that technology has changed the way patient’s access entertainment and the type of activity they now choose to fill their time. It is predominantly through their own devices using our free wi fi service rather than the old bedside radio. Patients also have a much shorter length of stay in hospital and we also have much more open

visiting arrangements and so we understand why it is the right time for Sheffield Hospitals radio to look at a different way to broadcast using new technology so that people can still access their programmes if they wish but also enable them to attract new listeners who are not necessarily patients but interested in their broadcasts.”

Steve Flowers, a Presenter and Programme Coordinator said: “If the radio station can’t continue, then the patients in the hospital will miss out on a station that’s dedicated especially to them. 40% of our patients don’t have any friends or relatives visiting, so a cheery face from hospital radio members visiting them by their bedside for a chat can really brighten their day. Combined with hearing their favourite song and their name mentioned on air, it can help boost their mental well-being. It would be a massive blow to Sheffield not to have its own hospital radio station after serving Sheffield patients for the last 48 years.”

MaYOR sTaNdING aGaIN

South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, has announced his intention to run for a second term, declaring ‘here in South Yorkshire we are starting to take back control of our own future.’

In a ‘Letter to South Yorkshire’ released on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday, the current Mayor has written: ‘I know that right now, across Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and Sheffield, all too many people are finding life all too hard. But after two years as South Yorkshire’s Mayor, I am more convinced than ever that none of the problems we face are inevitable or insurmountable. We are fixing public transport by working to bring our trams and our buses back under public control. We’re attracting world leading companies that will create good jobs in new industries. We’re tackling the health problems that plague our communities, and helping children and young people lead happier, healthier and more active lives. We’re building a bigger and better economy. Mayors deliver. This is my home, where I was born and raised, and where I intend to grow old. Restoring the pride, the purpose and the prosperity of South Yorkshire is why I asked for your support two years ago, and I will be asking for your support again on May 2nd so we can continue on that journey. Together I know we can keep building an even better, brighter future for South Yorkshire.’ Coppard was elected two years ago with 71% of the vote and a majority of over 80,000 votes. Since being elected he has consistently campaigned for further funding for South Yorkshire’s public transport network from central government, calling public transport in South Yorkshire ‘broken’. He has spent the last two years working to create an integrated transport network across the region; the South Yorkshire

Mayoral Combined Authority – led by Coppard – recently announced their plans to move forward with plans to bring the bus network back under public control, following the decision in 2022 to bring the Supertram network back into public hands. He has also recently announced a £138 million funding package to support plans to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport, at the heart of a sustainable aviation hub in Doncaster. Other notable steps taken by Coppard during his first term include bringing significant investment into the region. He has recently concluded the UK’s biggest regional ‘Citizens’ Assembly’ focused on finding solutions to climate change, and is this week set to announce plans to guarantee a safe place to sleep for every child under 5 across the region. He has also developed plans to plant 1.4 million trees, 1 for every person who lives in South Yorkshire.

People across Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and Sheffield will go to the polls on May 2nd to choose their next Mayor, following the government’s decision that South Yorkshire should abolish the separate role of the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) and bring those responsibilities into the office of the Mayor. From May, the Mayor of South Yorkshire’s expanded responsibilities will include developing a police and crime plan, setting the budget for South Yorkshire Police, and holding the Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police to account.

MasTER CUTlER’s CHallENGE

The Master Cutler Charles Turner DL is challenging us all, particularly companies and organisations in Sheffield and South Yorkshire to demonstrate their entrepreneurial flair and community spirit to raise funds for charity through this year’s Master Cutler’s Challenge. Since being initiated by Past Master Gordon Bridge in 2015, the Master Cutler’s Challenge has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charities. Everyone who takes part is given Ј50 by the Master Cutler and is challenged to use their entrepreneurial and fundraising skills to grow this amount for charity. This year, funds raised by the challenge will allow school children in deprived communities to take part in fun musical activities and experience the joy of singing through a new Schools Singing Programme.

“I am delighted to be able to support Sheffield Cathedral’s Schools Singing Programme and to help build a legacy that gives the gift of music to young people in this region for years to come.” said Charles. “Singing inspires and crosses cultures to bring beauty from the air we breathe. The cathedral’s Schools Singing Programme is a pioneering project for Sheffield and the South Yorkshire region. The programmme is being led by Tom Daggett, the cathedral’s new Director of Music. “We all know of the social, emotional and wellbeing effects of singing. It makes us happy” says Tom. “For children singing can be a safe place to turn to when feeling down but it also helps them to make friends, to develop the confidence to stand taller, to sing louder and to have the self-belief to overcome challenges in life. Childrens’ faces light up when they sing! Sadly, too many children across this city are missing out on the joy of singing because schools do not have the resources to give their pupils meaningful musical experiences. This is why this programme is so important and will make such a positive difference to childrens’ lives through opening their minds to what they can achieve.”

So far, the programme is only being delivered in a handful of Sheffiled schools because of the limited funding available but its transformative

effect is already clear to see. “Engaging with this fantastic new programme has been a wonderful experience for all our children and staff” explains Matt Sierczkarek, Headteacher of Prince Edward Primary School in Sheffield. “Children in our school don’t always get the same cultural opportunities other children may have but now, more than ever, being able to enjoy singing every week is enriching their lives. ” Master Cutler Charles Turner is hoping the funds raised through his challenge will help improve life chances of hundreds more children, especially those living in more disadvantaged areas. He says, “I encourage all companies, organisations and people to sign up and get involved in this year’s Masters Cutler’s Challenge. Together we can raise hopes and aspirations and transform young lives forever.”

A brand-new festival, which will bring the UK’s top names in podcasting to South Yorkshire, has been made possible thanks to sponsorship from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA).

Crossed Wires, The Podcast Festival, will be held in Sheffield between Friday 31 May and Sunday 2 June. Audiences will have the chance to be part of the live recording of many of the nation’s top podcasts over the weekend.

The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority will be Crossed Wires’ regional partner and host sponsor, providing funding of £325,000.

During the festival, Sheffield’s most iconic venues will be packed for blockbuster lives shows, never-seen-before performances and special guests - all hosted by the most respected names in podcasting, across comedy, current affairs, culture, sport, family and wellbeing.

A fringe festival, in venues around the city will offer free events with the podcast stars of tomorrow.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “The Crossed Wires festival is further evidence of the world-leading strength of arts and culture in South Yorkshire; putting us at the forefront of one of the most innovative, exciting parts of the entertainment industry.

SYCCIN LAUNCHES OPEN SPACE FORUM

A network for creative practitioners which has boosted cultural and creative industries across South Yorkshire in recent years is kickstarting a new programme of events to support professionals take their work to the next level. The South Yorkshire Cultural and Creative Industries Network (SYCCIN) will host its first in-person meeting of the year at Danum Gallery, Library and Museum in Doncaster on Thursday 25th April (5pm – 8pm). Professionals from across the region are invited to the ‘Open Space’ event to discuss the most pressing topics for their sector right now.

The South Yorkshire Cultural & Creative Industries Network (SYCCIN) launched in September 2021 with financial support and creative input from South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and Showroom Workstation. The inaugural event coincided with the cinematic release of Everybody’s

Talking About Jamie, the film version of the global theatrical hit of the same name, created in and around Sheffield. Its purpose is to galvanise the creative and cultural sectors across South Yorkshire and unlock the power and promote the potential of the vital role that arts, culture, digital design and gaming, and heritage sectors can play in the economic health and wellbeing of the region. A series of events across South Yorkshire has so far seen creative professionals - from photographers, musicians, producers, theatre makers and game developers - network, collaborate, learn and share best practice regularly.

The Open Space concept aims to encourage engagement, participation and the power to create a ‘manifesto’ based on a democratic discussion with input from all attendees. When successful, Open Space events help to shape meaningful action plans and longevity. The rules are few to encourage open debate in a safe space with the law of ‘two feet’ and two insects at its core. The ‘two feet’ law states that if any person finds that they are neither learning or contributing to a particular topic or question, that they can move to a more productive group. The insects are butterflies, that hover to be involved in the important discussions of the day; and bees, that flit from conversation to debate, bringing fresh ideas to each one.

With Jack demanding to know why Stacey is with his wife, Stacey thinks fast to come up with a convincing cover story. Jack seems to buy her lie but he’s left hurt when Denise insists she still doesn’t want to see him. He knows something is rotten and he’s determined to find out what it is. Is it the beginning of the end for ‘The Six’? George is in a state after going to his adoptive dad Eddie Knight’s trial for murder. After Yolande asks her prayer group to donate some items, she and Pastor Clayton are touched by everyone’s generosity and can give a thrilled Jean a pile of perfect things.Yolande’s delight at their success is soon scuppered, however when fellow church-goer Agatha reveals that people are gossiping about her close relationship with the Pastor!

LATE LEVELLER bREAKS bLAdES HEARTS

The Blades were temporarily off the bottom of the Premier League following a deserved share of the spoils on the south-coast, but for long periods they looked destined to secure a second away maximum of the campaign.

Gustavo Hamer fired United into a first half lead and Jack Robinson added a second just after the hour to put the visitors in the ascendency, but in the end, the hosts rallied and the Blades had to withstand heavy pressure after goals from Dango Ouattara and Enes Ünal had restored parity. United made four changes

for the trip to the Vitality Stadium, with Arblaster handed his full Premier League debut. Fit-again duo Baldock and Brereton Diaz also started, with Osborn recalled to the starting XI too. There was a chance at each end inside the opening three minutes, with Brereton Diaz denied from Hamer’s pass after Grbić had gathered a tame effort from Christie. Kerkez was then booked for a lunge on Davies, but the former Everton man was the penalised in his own area for what looked a good challenge on Solanke. But from the penalty spot, the aforementioned striker

slipped and skied his spotkick over the top. In what was becoming something of a feisty contest, Smith then caught Brereton Diaz late and was also cautioned, before the lively Semenyo was denied twice in quick succession by Grbić, the second a particular impressive save. And in the 28th minute, United deservedly took the lead as HAMER fired home on the rebound after Neto had parried Bogle’s initial effort into his path. Christie fired into the side netting as Bournemouth chased an equaliser, but McBurnie looked dangerous at the other end, having a header

saved from an Hamer delivery, although the midfielder was cautioned shortly afterwards for a foul on Smith. Grbić clawed away an header from Semenyo before to denying the onrushing Kluivert, with the half ending with United forcing consecutive corners after Davies had a header tipped over. The former Everton midfielder was replaced by Souza at the break and having withstood some early pressure, United doubled their advantage on 64 minutes as ROBINSON fired home after a mix up between Neto and Solanke from an inswinging corner,

after Arblaster had come close to scoring on his first league start for his boyhood club.

The Cherries thought they’d immediately reduced the deficit when Solanke fired home from close-range but following a lengthy VAR check the goal was disallowed for handball as Ahmedhodžić and McAtee replaced McBurnie and Bogle, with Grbić following McBurnie into referee Taylor’s book for timewasting.

On 74 minutes, OUATTARA headed home at the near post from Christie’s inswinging corner and that seemingly gave them a fresh lease of life, as Osula and

Norwood entered the fray, with Brereton Diaz and Arblaster the ones to make way. The Blades, backed by the excellent travelling support continued to battle, only to be undone during eight minutes of added time.

UNAL was denied by a clearance by Norwood having rose highest at the back post, but the ball was quickly recycled and he volleyed into the bottom corner to break Blades hearts and at the death, Sinisterra came within a whisker of completing the comeback having got on the outside of Baldock, but the visitors held on in the end for a draw.

ROVERS VICTORIOUS OVER PROMOTION CHASERS

Rovers roared to a comfortable 2-0 win over promotion-chasing Crewe Alexandra at the EcoPower Stadium.

Hakeeb Adelakun scored directly from a corner to get Rovers off the mark with substitute Tommy Rowe doubling the lead just before the hour mark.

The victory - a fourth in seven - was fully deserved as Rovers built on their performance at Bradford City with some incisive attacking play and excellent work out of possession.

Both Jamie Sterry and James Maxwell were forced off through injury during the first half while Joe Ironside and Matthew Craig were withdrawn at the break in the

only black marks on a good afternoon. Grant McCann kept faith with the same side that started at Bradford four days earlier, as well as the same substitutes. The game was bogged down in midfield in the early stages as the two sides gently probed.

Rovers produced the first effort of note when Luke Molyneux cut in from the right and fired to the near post where Crewe keeper Tom Booth saved with comfort.

Elliott Nevitt should have done better moments later at the other end when rising to meet a deep cross at the back post but turned his header off target.

Adelakun embarked on a tricky run from the left and into the box before forcing Booth to tip wide with a low drive.

And from the subsequent corner, Rovers took the lead on 16 minutes when Adelakun curled the dead ball straight in.

Thimothée Lo-Tutala made a brave save at the feet of Shilow Tracey after the wide man raced beyond the Rovers defence.

Owen Bailey popped up with a vital block from Josh Austerfield after switching to right back following the departure of Sterry midway through the half.

And Nevitt failed to trouble Lo-Tutala after beating the offside flag.

Half time saw both Maxime Biamou and Joseph Olowu introduced for Joe Ironside and Matthew Craig as McCann was forced into another shuffle of the pack.

Charlie Kirk failed to find the target after latching onto a loose ball in the box at the end of a break for the visitors.

Rovers extended the advantage on 58 minutes.

Molyneux sent a chip across goal from the byline, with Olowu meeting the ball on the volley and sending it to the far post when Rowe poked home.

Rio Adebisi saw a header deflect wide as Crewe pushed but Rovers remained a threat. Zain Westbrooke pulled a shot off target from the edge of the box before

Biamou flicked a header straight at Booth from a Bailey cross.

The visitors should have had a goal back 15 minutes from time when Austerfield squared to Adebisi 15 yards out but Lo-Tutala made a superb save with his feet.

Rovers continued to pose the greater threat. Biamou powered a header on goal from a free kick but could not beat Booth.

And Kyle Hurst was denied by the Crewe keeper after being played into space by Biggins.

HEAdS UP ANd GO FORwARd

The Owls’ winning run in the Championship came to end on Friday night at Hillsborough and Danny Röhl is now looking for his side to react in their usual manner following a setback.

Under Röhl’s management, one of Wednesday’s strongest traits has been their reaction to adversity. Our survival hopes took a huge hit at Huddersfield last month but the reaction from the squad was swift, picking up maximum points at home to Birmingham. Four wins on the bounce was our response to defeat against league leaders Leicester more recently and Röhl says he wants similar again in terms of a reaction after defeat to Leeds on Friday night.

Danile Farke’s side showed their automatic promotion credentials in full, as they edged closer

to an immediate Premier League return.

“We are disappointed but we will keep going,” the Owls manager said.

“We have shown in the last weeks that always after setbacks we have showed a reaction and come back stronger and this is what we have to do.

“We will take positive things from the game against such a strong side and go forward.

“The important thing is that we are doing really very well with our team and we should be proud.

“On the night we were disappointed but the next day it was heads back up and go forward.

“For us now it is about focusing on our performances and if we carry on as we have over the last weeks then we have a big, big opportunity.

“We will work hard, we know the situation and we will keep fighting.”
