POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER POWERS TO BE TRANSFERRED TO MAYOR OF SOUTH YORKSHIRE

The Home Secretary has passed legislation to transfer Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) functions for South Yorkshire to the Mayor of South Yorkshire.

This follows a public consultation launched by the Home Office and debates in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The separate role of Police and Crime Commissioner for South Yorkshire will be dissolved when the current term of office comes to an end. A Mayoral election will be held on 2 May 2024 and the successful candidate will become Mayor of South Yorkshire with Police and Crime Commissioner functions.

Following contact from government officials, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority began the process of transferring Police Crime Commissioner powers in June 2023, after the Government’s Levelling Up White Paper outlined a commitment to enable Mayors to take on public safety functions including Police and Crime Commissioners.

A SYMCA spokesperson said: “The transfer of

these functions to the Mayoral role presents the opportunity to align police and crime priorities, including the Violence Reduction Unit, with the work of the MCA to improve outcomes for people and communities across South Yorkshire, including work to deliver public transport, regeneration, skills and employment, health and to improve outcomes for people and communities across South Yorkshire.

“It will allow the Mayor to make co-ordinated decisions for our communities; working with the business

community, voluntary sector, Fire and Rescue, Safer Roads Partnership and other partners to deliver policing priorities.

“Because of these changes, South Yorkshire residents will take to the polls on Thursday 2 May, to vote for who they want to elect as Mayor of South Yorkshire.

“We would like to take this opportunity to express sincere thanks to the current Police and Crime Commissioner, Dr Alan Billings for his dedicated service to the communities of South Yorkshire and his

team for all their work.

World number one Humphries will make his highly-anticipated Premier League debut following his sensational run of form in recent months, culminating

in his World Darts Championship success at London’s Alexandra Palace on Wednesday January 03.

The 28-year-old - also a winner at the World Grand Prix, Grand Slam of Darts and Players Championship Finals - produced a rousing display to defeat 16year-old Littler and lift the famous Sid Waddell Trophy on a recordbreaking night in the capital.

Littler will also make his Premier League bow following an

extraordinary World Championship campaign, which saw him generate global headlines and shatter a host of records in the process.

The World Youth Champion will become the youngest player to feature in the sport’s biggest roadshow, which gets underway at the Utilita Arena in Cardiff on Thursday February 1.

Reigning champion Van Gerwen is chasing a record-extending eighth Premier League crown in 2024, and the Dutch supremo will star in the

£1m event alongside last year’s runner-up Gerwyn Price.

The 2024 BetMGM Premier League will see eight of the sport’s top stars contesting 16 minievents during the season, with each league night comprising quarter-finals,

semi-finals and a final over the best of 11 legs. Points will be awarded each night to form the league table, from which the top four players will progress to the PlayOffs, which will be held at The O2 in London on Thursday May 23.

to impact those struggling to feed themselves and their pets. The animal welfare charity has provided a staggering 1.6 million pet meals since the scheme was introduced in 2020 as part of a major drive to do everything possible to help keep those facing financial hardship together with their pets.

A 47 year-old woman who regularly visits the Handsworth Food Bank in Sheffield told how she began using the service - including the Pet Food Bank, after she was diagnosed with a brain tumour and was unable to work and her husband later had to give up his job to care for her. She said: “I was working part time but then I was diagnosed with a brian tumour so had to give up my job as I was struggling with mobility and was in a lot of pain. I have to have 39 botox injections in my head to

help with the pain now as well as other medication and have oxygen. Things were getting worse and I had a stroke, became prone to fainting, so my husband had to give up his full time job to care for me. We went from a working couple doing ok to a couple really struggling to get by and as we have three dogs and two cats caring for them was so tough. There was no way I wanted to give up my pets - they keep me sane and I need that as it helps my mental wellbeing - so the RSPCA Pet Food Bank has really made a huge difference to us. We visit weekly to collect food for ourselves and our pets - it really is a huge lifeline and we are so grateful and not sure how we would cope without this help.”

The Pet Food Bank Partnership was set up as a pilot scheme in Lancashire in December 2020 as a result of financial pressures during the pandemic. It was so successful it expanded across the whole of the North of England and now supplies almost 140 foodbanks with meals and also issues veterinary vouchers to food bank clients to ensure pets can get any urgent care they need.

Now during 2024 - as the charity celebrates its 200th birthday - the number of established food banks is to expand across the rest of England - with more in South Yorkshire - to help the growing number of pet owners in need of help. Already this year 15,400 dog meals and 27,270 cat meals have been provided to food bank users.Three full time coordinators

have been employed who will work with RSPCA branches, field officers, local charities and community groups to source more pet food supplies, offer support and develop more focal points where the donated pet food can be made available. The new staff will also liaise with pet food manufacturers and other donors who provide the food for free or assist with the cost to ensure a constant supply to meet the increasing demand. Alison Fletcher, RSPCA National Food Bank Coordinator, said: “Sadly our rescuers are often coming across people who are struggling to feed themselves and will actually go without food themselves so they can afford to feed their pets. We really don’t want anyone to be in this position and are doing all we can to help. Pets offer a major comfort to loving owners in challenging times and they shouldn’t feel forced to give them up - as they are members of the family - so we are providing what many users describe as a ‘lifeline’. Many pet owners who are struggling during the cost of living crisis have told us that their much-loved pets help them with their mental well-being so we are keen for them to retain ownership of their pets during these times of financial hardship. With the help of the public, we’ve been changing animals’ lives for two centuries, so it is really fitting that in our 200th birthday year we can announce this major expansion to ensure ‘no community goes without’.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard and Active Travel Commissioner Ed Clancy OBE visited Goldthorpe Primary Academy in Barnsley on Friday 15 March to hear from pupils about how they’re creating more opportunities for walking, wheeling and cycling in their community. Mayor Coppard and Ed Clancy were invited to an active travel lesson with Barnsley Council’s Sport and Physical Activity team and Year 5 pupils before participating in a RampUP session – giving young people the chance to get active by cycling and scooting on portable street ramps. Oliver has committed to supporting more activity and movement at schools in South Yorkshire as a key element of the ‘Year of Active Travel’, promoting health, wellbeing and community. He said: “We’re building a happier, healthier South Yorkshire. That means giving our communities more and better choices about how to travel and stay active. We need to support children and young people to develop good habits at an early age. They need to be able to get to and from school healthily and safely. That’s what my Year of Active Travel is about - creating more opportunities to move more and move differently. The RampUP project helps children and young people see and feel the benefits of cycling and scooting at school. It gives children in Barnsley the chance to take part in a fun and structured activity in their community, developing an interest in physical activity, encouraging inclusivity, and building confidence in active travel from a young age. All of which can ultimately contribute to healthier lives and a better future.”

Half MaRaTHON CHallENGE

This spring, Jonathan Bckley from Sheffield is taking on an epic four half-marathons in four weeks challenge in aid of Snowdrop. Jonathan said “I’ve been raising money for charity for years and yearsincluding Blue Peter Bring & Buy sales, sponsored walks, 24-hour fasts and silences, growing my hair and beard for nine months before shaving it all off, and running 10Ks, half-marathons and marathons. This spring coincides with somebody (me, apparently!) turning 40 at the end of April. Just to make it slightly harder, I’m going to run the four half-marathons carrying the Olympic Torch which is currently behind our TV! I ran with it through Armthorpe, Doncaster back in July 2012, and I carried it while running the Sheffield 10K for Snowdrop in October. I had a few comments from the crowd and fellow runners, so thought I’d do it again! In keeping with the theme of four half-marathons in four weeks to celebrate 40 years, I thought I’d set myself the target of raising £40k for Snowdrop. How realistic that is, I have no idea, but I certainly want to try and get into five figures (£10k plus) rather than my ‘usual’ range of £5-1000. I’ve managed to get six or seven friends signed up to run alongside me to help reach that target. There’s still plenty of space for others to join me too! I’d also like to raise awareness of modern

slavery and the work Snowdrop does, and will be sharing this with local media outlets nearer the time. Before having kids, my wife and I were Volunteer Drivers with the Salvation Army’s Modern Slavery Team, which involved picking up victims of trafficking and taking them to safe houses across the country. We met first-hand the people that Snowdrop work with; we’ve had them in our car. We’ve chatted with them.

That’s part of our journey to doing what we can. And maybe one day, when our kids are a bit older, we’ll get back volunteering with the Salvation Army again. The atmosphere of the races is always incredible. I’m looking forward to experiencing different races - I’m running the Sheffield half on 7th April, the Cannock Chase half on 14th April, the Run Roche Abbey Run Run Run on 21st April, and the East Yorkshire Half Marathon on 28th April. I’m looking forward to a bath at the end of each day, and hopefully raising a fair bit of money and publicity for Snowdrop along the way! All Seasons Energy, part of clean energy-tech champion Aira, will be working on a new government-funded project with Sheffield City Council to help bring home efficiency and decarbonisation benefits to thousands of Sheffield homes.

Throughout March, the All Seasons team are out with Sheffield City Council to raise awareness of the Warm Home Sheffield scheme, part of the Home Upgrade Grant. This initiative provides households without gas central heating and an annual income of under £36,000, an average of £14,000 worth of upgrades at no extra cost to the consumer. They will be installing solar panels, wall insulation and heat pumps in the area as part of this grant initiative, to help more people move away from expensive and unreliable energy and heating solutions in favour of more effective and affordable alternatives. The grant initiative is expected to run until March 2025.

These upgrades and related benefits include:

• Solar panels - save you up to £385 a year

• Wall insulation - save you up to £360 a year

• An Air Source Heat Pump – will save you 25% on your heating costs and reduce your household carbon emissions by 75%

• Upgrades will also add value to your home

For consumers who aren’t eligible for the Warm Homes Sheffield scheme but are interested in switching to a clean home heating solution, Aira offers an all-inclusive plan, removing the barrier of high upfront costs with a monthly payment plan.

Cllr Douglas Johnson said: “Heating their homes means so much to our residents here in Sheffield. So, we want to make sure as many of them as possible are taking advantage of this government grant funding. This is exciting, not just because it helps people to save money, but also because warm homes have well-documented positive effects on health and wellbeing. A vital step in the right direction for the Abbeydale Picture house as £300k grant confirmed

CADS (Creative Arts Development Space) is delighted to announce a significant advancement in the quest to save one of the city’s historical landmarks.

The Abbeydale Picture House, a Grade II listed building recently added to the Theatre’s Trusts’ At-Risk Register. After a prolonged

period of uncertainty and a difficult decision to close the venue last month, CADS has been awarded a £300,000 grant from the UK Government’s Community Ownership Fund, marking a vital step towards the restoration and reinvigoration of this iconic heritage building. This funding is provided by the Department for Levelling Up Housing and Communities.

The Abbeydale Picture House is known for its rich cultural heritage and architectural grandeur and has faced numerous challenges over the years, including extensive damage that led to the inoperability of its main auditorium. This grant serves as a beacon of hope, not only allowing CADS to move towards a purchase of the building but also to prepare for urgent repair and restoration works that are crucial for its preservation.

“While this grant is undoubtedly a huge leap forward in our mission to revive The Abbeydale Picture House, it’s important to recognise that this is the first step of many to fully restore the building to

its former glory,” stated Steve Rimmer, CADS founder and board director. “We are immensely grateful for this support from the Community Ownership Fund. It’s a testament to the importance of The Abbeydale Picture House not just to CADS but to Sheffield. We’d also like to note special thanks to Sheffield City Council for their continued support, especially in recent months, Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Director of City & Culture at The University of Sheffield who advised on this latest funding bid and has assisted CADs for many years, alongside the Music Venues Trust, Theatres Trust, and the National Trust amongst many others who’ve provided their support.

Grant McCann admitted calling for more urgency from his Rovers side as they sought to break down stubborn Forest Green Rovers at the EcoPower Stadium. Rovers dominated the ball in the first half but struggled to make in-roads against the opposition, who sat deep and invited the pressure.

But after McCann emphasised at half time the need to move the ball more quickly, Rovers went on to

United’s Under 18s returned to winning ways with an excellent performance in tough conditions at the Florence Park training ground against Colchester United.

Strikes from Archie Christie-Crainie, Jackson Blaize, Noah Kiwomya and Lamine Sidibe saw the Blades hit four without a reply.

For large parts though it was a scrappy game in windy conditions, but United were the better team from the off and imposed themselves early on, taking the lead just inside 10 minutes when a free-kick into the box fell for Christie-Crainie who hammered home a half volley into the far corner for his second goal in as many games.

Minutes later, a deflected cross from Mekhi Haughton-Parris fell for Marshall Francis but the striker’s looping header dropped just over, and after that neither side created too many meaningful chances until Noah Kiwomya was presented with a one-on-one, but his attempted chip was over the bar.

Haughton-Parris saw a free-kick deflected just wide as United remained on the ascendency, and the pattern continued after the break but with less chances until Blaize broke through just before the hour mark and slotted home to double the lead.

Seven minutes later it was three, with Blaize again the threat down the right, though this time his effort was saved, Kiwomya was there to tap home into an empty net to put the result beyond doubt. “It’s always nice to have,” he said. “We probably haven’t had enough of them this season but we stuck to our task in this one.

LensGo will also support the County FA to capture the stories of all our 2024 Grassroots Football Award winners, bringing to life their nominations through video to recognise and celebrate their amazing contribution to grassroots football. The partnership will see LensGo named as the headline sponsor of our Senior Cup finals and the 2024 Grassroots Football Awards ceremony at the end of the year. OWLS INTERNATIONAL WEEKENd ROUNd-UP

Bailey Cadamarteri scored his first international goal on Sunday as the England Under-19s were narrowly edged out 3-2 by USA.

The young lions fought back twice after going behind as Cadamarteri fired home an equaliser from the penalty spot to make it one apiece with 20 minutes gone.
