ROCKET RONNIE CALLS FOR MOVE AWAY FROM SHEFFIELD
Ronnie O’Sullivan has called for the World Snooker Championship to be moved from the Crucible, naming Saudi Arabia and China as possible alternatives. The Sheffield venue has hosted every edition of the tournament since 1977 but the seventime champion believes the time has come for change.
The 48-year-old will seek to win a record eighth title when the championship begins this weekend, having recently competed in the Saudi capital Riyadh and the Chinese city of Yushan.
“I don’t like the Crucible,” he told the
Sun. “I don’t think you can get in and out of it.
I think definitely it’s a wise decision to take it away from Sheffield.
“Still have a tournament there. Why not? But just not the world championship over 17 days. It’s a massive circus and you need a massive space to accommodate it.
“I think Saudi Arabia would be great. They’ve got the resources and would do it great. If you’re going to take it to China, you’d have to take it to Shanghai. Or another major city like Shenzhen or Guangzhou.
“It’d be done properly. Courtesy cars will be
laid on. Food will be there. Hotels will be great. Everything would be paid for. Prize money would be astronomical.
“The snooker becomes secondary. What are the facilities like? What’s it like for the fans?
What’s the access like?
You don’t need a 10 out of 10 venue. But everything else has to be right.”
While still heavily involved in snooker, Barry Hearn is no longer chairman of World Snooker Tour or Matchroom Sport, working in an advisory, presidential role now. He admits that his son Eddie, now chairman of Matchroom, is much
more open to a move away from Sheffield to make more money.
The Crucible’s capacity is just under 1,000, but Barry has made a request of the city to guarantee the tournament’s future with a bigger venue.
‘The danger you’ve got is Eddie,’ Hearn told Stephen Hendry last year on his Cue Tips channel of the Crucible’s future. ‘Eddie is not a snooker fan and one thing I’ve taught him is to be honest, to tell the truth. He’s not a snooker fan and it’s tempting [to move].
‘They’ve got four years, I’m really laying the gauntlet down to
Sheffield City Council. I’m fed up with being the guy that always does the right thing. I’m saying to Sheffield, “I want to stay, build me a new venue. You like it, you tell me it’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to Sheffield, I believe you. I will commit. Build me a venue that hold 2,500 people.”
‘It’s not a lot, I think that’s the perfect crowd. Call it the Crucible, leave the Crucible theatre doing theatre stuff. Don’t tell me you love me and then leave me to pay the bill when we have dinner.’

Spanning four acres, the walled kitchen garden at Clumber Park is one of the grandest surviving 18th century walled gardens in England. Work to restore & redecorate the gardens most iconic feature, the Grade II listed Conservatory and Palm House, is now complete and has fully reopened to the public. Reaching over 137 metres (450 feet), and split into 12 sections, the Glasshouse is the longest in the care of the National Trust. It was installed by the 7th Duke of Newcastle and completed in 1910. Over 110 years old, the design and construction of the Glasshouse is attributed to horticultural builders, James Gray. Work started on the central area and east wing of the Glasshouse in August 2023. The six-month long project involved extensive timber splice repairs and resin repairs to retain as much of the original timber structure as possible. The glazing, of which the roof alone has over 800 individual panes, was removed, cleaned, and reused where possible. The work was kindly funded by gifts in wills from supporters. Now complete, visitors can access the full breadth of the building which also houses a Tools & Vineries museum, apple store & drying room and the old
Gardener’s mess room.
The Clumber Park Gardens team, which consists of 7 staff and over 45 frequent volunteers, create spectacular displays in the Conservatory of the Glasshouse each season, and this spring are organising two events to showcase the restored Glasshouse and the much-loved walled kitchen garden.
Rhubarb Week, Monday 15 – Saturday 20 April.
The walled kitchen garden is home to the National Rhubarb Collection, with over 130 varieties, so there is a lot to celebrate here at Clumber when it comes to rhubarb. This event includes rhubarb tasting, a rhubarb trail and tours of the garden.
Blossom Week, Saturday 20 – Sunday 28 April
The National Trust’s Festival of Blossom is a shared national celebration of nature which takes place each spring. This year, enjoy many blossom themed activities including Japanese folklore storytelling, a photography walk, pop-up floristry and poetry workshops.

The NHS in South Yorkshire offers local people protection in its new spring COVID-19 campaign starting in care homes for older adults from Monday 15 April and to wider eligible groups on Monday 22nd April.
Following Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) advice, the eligible cohorts this spring include:
• Residents in care homes for older adults
• Adults aged 75 years and over by 30 June 2024
• Individuals aged 6 months and over who are immunosuppressed.
The main change to eligibility from previous COVID-19 programmes is that those with a weakened immune system are now eligible from 6 months instead of 5 years. People are encouraged to book a vaccination appointment through the NHS National Booking System.
On Monday 15 April the first visits to older adult care homes and eligible household patients will start. People who receive their care in their own homes should contact their GP in the first instance. From Monday 22 April vaccinations for the wider eligible groups will be offered.
Spring COVID-19 vaccinations are available until 30 June 2024.
Vaccination appointments can be made via the NHS website or by calling 119. Parents or carers can book a Covid-19 vaccination for children under 16 on their behalf. Eligible people aged 16 and over can also use the NHS App to book an appointment. NHS England is also sending reminder texts, emails, NHS App messages or letters to eligible people, however they can also go ahead and book appointments at any time.
Across South Yorkshire vaccinations will be delivered in over 180 participating pharmacies, GP led primary care networks and at
advertised pop-up clinic events. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) surveillance data on the 2023 spring Covid-19 vaccination programme shows that those who received a vaccine were around 50% less likely to be admitted to hospital with COVID-19 for three to four months after vaccination, compared to those who did not receive one.
Dr James Thomas said “Covid-19 is still very dangerous and even lifethreatening, especially for older people and those with a weakened immune system. People at increased risk from severe illness can get the vaccine, including those aged 75 or over (on 30 June 2024), people with a weakened immune system or who live in an older adult care home. The COVID19 vaccine offers good protection and helps reduce the risk of serious illness or death, needing to go to hospital, catching and spreading the virus, and protects against different variants. Anyone eligible who has not received a previous dose – or has not for a while - should get vaccinated during this spring offer, to help protect against serious illness. It is vital that those who are at higher risk top up their protection.” You can book an appointment easily and quickly on the NHS App, by calling 119 for free, or visiting the NHS website, which also lists walk-in sites across our region that you can visit without an appointment.”
The NHS is also encouraging those eligible to get the shingles vaccine, which is recommended for all adults turning 65, those aged 70 to 79, and those aged 50 and over with a severely weakened immune system. Anyone eligible should also be contacted by their GP surgery to book an appointment.

As we are now in Spring, it is important for those who suffer with hay fever to recognise the symptoms, and to learn how to prevent them. Hay fever is a common allergy of pollen, created by plants. While not harmful, your body can produce cold-like symptoms when the pollen count increases.
Hay fever symptoms include:
• Sneezing and coughing
• Runny or blocked nose
• Sore, red, or watery eyes
• Itchy roof of mouth and throat
• Extreme fatigue
Important tips to minimise the symptoms of hay fever: Minimise your contact with pollen
It is important to reduce your exposure to pollen where possible. If you can, this means avoiding gardening, staying clear of grassy areas, and checking the pollen count before heading outside.
Keeping windows and doors shut
It is important to keep as many of the windows and doors shut in your house as possible, to allow as little pollen as possible to get indoors.
Protect your eyes
It is important to protect your eyes when you have hay fever, as the allergy can cause them to become irritated and itchy. Wraparound sunglasses are good to use during high pollen counts.
Protect your nose
To prevent the pollen getting into your nose, you can use a face mask to act as a block between the irritants and your nostrils. It can also help your nose
from getting runny or blocked. Another way to protect your nose is by using petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, under and around your nose to trap any pollen attempting to get into your nostril.
Over-the-counter medication
Sometimes you may require pharmaceutical intervention to alleviate hay fever symptoms. Loratadine and cetirizine are just two antihistamines that can help combat the effects of stubborn hay fever symptoms.
Changing your clothes and showering
After being outside, considering changing out of your clothes, putting them in the wash, and then showering before putting on new clothes. Doing this can help to wash pollen from your skin and lessen your symptoms.
Quitting smoking
Cutting out smoking is also recommended to those who want to prevent the symptoms of hay fever. Smoking damages the lining of your lungs, which can make your airways more sensitive to allergens. An expert says, ‘’Recognising hay fever symptoms allows individuals to seek appropriate treatment, leading to a better quality of life during the warmer months. Taking preventative measures can help to minimise the discomfort caused by hay fever symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes, allowing individuals to enjoy their summer activities with minimal interruption.”
HElp HEIdI RaIsE MONEY!
Sarah Asbery has recently recovered from cancer, fortunately without some of the side effects of chemotherapy. However eight year old daughter Heidi decided she could do something to help others not so fortunate as her mum. Sarah continues; “My 8 year old daughter, Heidi, has decided to have 40cm of her beautiful golden 76cm long hair cut off and will donate it to the Little Princess Trust. They make wigs for children who lose their hair to childhood cancer or other illnesses. I had womb cancer during Covid and she had to watch me go to appointments and ultimately have a hysterectomy at only 34 years old. Although, I didn’t have to have chemotherapy in the
end, we had talked about that and it might mean losing my hair. Heidi and her older brother are both autistic and found the thought of this very distressing.
I’ve only ever tidied up the ends of her hair once, so this will be her first ever haircut! She is so excited to be doing this and helping someone who has lost her hair.
We set up a JustGiving page to see if we could get something towards the £700 cost of making a wig to send with her hair. In less than 24 hours she’s raised over £800! She would love to see her story spread further and raise more money to send to the Little Princess Trust to help with the amazing work they do.”

Tramlines Festival unleash opportunities with grants for local projects and support for Hillsborough traders
The Tramlines Trust is relaunched for 2024 with funding available for a wide range of projects.
In its ongoing mission to support the Sheffield community, Tramlines Festival is thrilled to announce today the opening of applications to the 2024 Tramlines Trust alongside the return of the Little Hillsborough initiative. The Tramlines Trust gives grants to organisations and people who support the arts, local community and the environment. Since moving to Hillsborough Park in 2018, a whopping £213k has been raised for many charities and causes including Weston Park Cancer Care, Cavendish Cancer Care, The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation and Sheffield Hospitals Charity. In 2023, The Tramlines Trust raised £57,600. A notable £27,800 of these funds were allocated across 27 deserving local
organisations, marking a significant impact on Sheffield’s grassroots projects. Noteworthy applicants included funding the Hillsborough Christmas Lights with a grant of £5,000. Additional recipients ranged from the Hillsborough Hornets Disability FC, requiring a larger pitch for their growing team, to Adira. This mental health charity utilised the funds to brighten the holiday season for disadvantaged children across Sheffield.
Reflecting on the trust’s achievements, Timm Cleasby, Operations Director, stated, “I know first-hand that there are hundreds of local people with ideas that have the power to change their communities for the better. We’re very pleased that Tramlines can help in any way to realise these dreams and create meaningful impact in people’s lives”.
With the application window for the 2024 grants now open, the Tramlines Trust is inviting a new cohort of grassroots organisations to seek funding. Full details on the type of projects supported and the application process can be found on the Tramlines website. In addition to the Tramlines Trust and other charitable projects, the economic impact of the festival was estimated at £3.8million annually in data published last September.
The Little Hillsborough initiative is also returning in 2024 and will give subsidised pitches to Hillsboroughbased businesses offering them the chance to showcase their creations and products to the festival’s 40,000 attendees with the festival covering all operational costs. Businesses in the pilot included a stall run by prolific Sheffield artist Luke Horton, homemade items from Annie
Jude’s and Michael LeCount, an internationally recognised Lego fanatic who runs the Bricks and Bits shop on Dixon Road. Luke Horton said, ‘trading at the festival is an exceptional opportunity to boost revenue’, which, ‘enabled us to progress and offer improved service heading into Christmas’. Annie Jude, has said she, ‘loved having Tramlines in Hillsborough Park, it creates a buzz about the area’, and thanked Tramlines for ‘offering us a free space inside Little Hillsborough’ and for, ‘sharing my business on socials and on the screens during the festival.’
Little Hillsborough is just one of many ways that Tramlines seeks to engage and support the local community. The residents ticket service, a voluntary scheme from Tramlines, has given away an everincreasing number of free tickets
to local people which included over 1,600 weekend passes in 2023. Other local highlights include work with Hillsborough Junior School which has raised funds for the school. Children in the school have made a ‘class tea towel’ style pictures of Tramlines acts which are made into actual tea towels and sold at the festival as a fundraising activity.
Interested businesses for Little Hillsborough must submit their applications via the Tramlines website by 26th April, with outcomes announced by 17th May.

NOTHING IN THE GAME - WILdER
on what might have been after his side produced another competitive display in a 2-0 defeat at Brentford. United gave a good account of themselves and had plenty of promising moments at the Gtech Community Stadium, but an unfortunate own goal from Oliver Arblaster and a late second from Frank Onyeka secured the points for the hosts. After the game, Wilder was pleased with the overall display but
disappointed United couldn’t convert their positive moments, stating there was little between the two sides.
He said: “There was an opportunity there, we understand the league position from our point of view and Brentford’s point of view, but there was nothing in the game, just the final bit.
If you look at the first goal, we have a 5 v 3 in their box, we take the wrong option and all of a sudden the ball is in the back of our net from a deflection. There was a period first half when
AN HONEST MISTAKE dECIdEd ITRICHARdSON
Millers Head Coach Leam Richardson was disappointed his side had nothing to show for their efforts at the Swansea.com Stadium as Andy Rinomhota’s unfortunate own goal saw them return north empty handed.
The game looked set to be heading for a draw until Swansea popped up with the winner with 16 minutes to go and dash any Millers hopes of gaining a rare point on their travels.
“I’ve no qualms with the goal. It was an honest mistake. Andy is a loan player, who has committed himself to the club and made himself available every single game.
“We were wasteful in possession in the first half. With our tired legs with the small group we have got, it showed from Wednesday into today’s game. “Swansea are a good team. They are well-organised and well-coached. We were waiting for those moments. It’s a big chance for Tom (Eaves) and when it was in there, you think it’s a goal, but it was not to be. We will lick our wounds a little bit and move on. “We have got a certain group of players, where we have to play a certain way. My first question, before and after, is did you give everything for the shirt and today we did. What we lack in certain areas we make up for in work ethic, endeavour and application.
“The result is not the one we wanted. Credit to the fans for coming all the way down to Swansea. You want to put a performance on for them. You can see how much it means to them clapping the players off. When you get clapped off with a negative result that shows how much hard work and representation the players put in.”
they build up a head of steam, but I only thought they would score from a bit of magic off Mbeumo or Wissa or a set play. We countered that, we defended that very well, we’re just a little disappointed that we didn’t find that final pass, run, cross or finish. “We played our way out a couple of times really well and it just broke down at the real crucial moment. In the Premier League you have to be so pitch perfect at everything. You have to play at the top of your game, make sure
you knit those passes together, you find that pass that gets you in front and then the momentum goes with you, then it’s a tough afternoon for our hosts.
“Competitive standard, I’m fine with that. We worked very hard in terms of how we played, there were no passengers, it was just the quality we needed to find which decides games. I think it was a bit of luck which went against us, but I always felt we were in the game, and we had an opportunity.”
McCann praises Ironside as he hits 20-goal mark
Grant McCann lavished praise on striker Joe Ironside as he hit the 20-goal mark for the season in the 4-0 win over Accrington Stanley. Ironside fired in Rovers’ second of an excellent afternoon to move on 20 goals in all competitions and 16 in Sky Bet League Two - his best return for a season in EFL competition.
“He’s a top player Joe and I think his performance upped the level that he showed on Tuesday night,” McCann said.
“His hold up play was great, he was pinning people and bringing others into play. Haks and Mols could make their movements off him.
“I’m really pleased. It was quite similar to the goal he scored the other night - just arriving late and passing it into the corner.
“It’s great for Joe and I’m really pleased because when I spoke to him in the summer about coming here I told him he’d get goals in this team, with how
we play. I’m glad he’s delivered.”
In reaching 20 goals, Ironside became the first Rovers player to do so since John Marquis in McCann’s previous spell at the club.
McCann said: “They’re similar in many ways and different in others. John was an interesting character and a really good person to have around the building. He was really high all the time and drove standards.
“Joe is quite similar but they’re different in terms of how they play.
“It’s nice to see that Joe is in that sort of bracketthe first player to score 20 goals for Rovers since John Marquis is really good for him.”
WE WILL NOT GIVE UP THIS FIGHT - RöHL
After a weekend in which results elsewhere ran away from Wednesday, Danny Röhl has underlined the focus of importance of focusing on yourself.
The Owls were held to a 1-1 draw by Stoke in a game they dominated, compounded by relegations rivals picking up unexpected points.
But Röhl says he will pick up his players, with the finish line in sight: “We should have won this game today and it was similar to other games such as Cardiff, Watford and Swansea.
“But this is the Championship as we have seen with the results today and yesterday, we cannot expect help from
anyone else, we have to do this ourselves.
“We now have a big week ahead, I will pick up my players and we will be ready for the fight when we go to Blackburn with 7,000 of our massive fans behind us.
“With everyone else playing before us, we will know what we have to do so let’s see.
“We can take this atmosphere with us, it was fantastic today, from the players to the stands and from the stands to the players.
“One thing is clear, we will not give up this fight. Of course, I expect this to go to the last day and we will give everything to make sure we have the chance.”
