‘Social clubS Should be part of national infraStructure’

The next government should consider reviving working class social and welfare clubs as part of key national infrastructure needed for ‘left behind communities’, says Labour PPC Kirsty McNeill.

In an essay for the Social Market Foundation, Kirsty McNeill, the Scottish Labour and Co-operative candidate for Midlothian, has put forth an ambitious plan to reverse the decline of social clubs in workingclass communities. “Working class social and welfare clubs are the beating heart of our communities and deserve the same standing in public policy as other bits of key infrastructure”, McNeill said.

Social clubs, such as Working Men’s Clubs and miners welfare clubs, are places where people congregate to enjoy shared activities and events. They are generally run as either member-owned co-operatives or membership-based charities, meaning they are run by the community. Social clubs have been under pressure for decades, and are fast declining.

Fifty years ago, the Club & Institute Union (CIU), the central co-op supporting clubs, used to issue more than seven million membership cards a year. That figure is now one million and

declining year-on-year. With the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis worsening socialising levels and prompting a connection and loneliness epidemic, it is vital that social clubs are revived to reignite the sense of “security of knowing we are part of a wider network of respect and fellow feeling”, McNeill said. Existing clubs perform multiple functions for communities, and crucially at low or no cost to attendees. As heating bills spiralled, 2.5 million visits were paid to “warm hubs” and organisers found that “people came for the warmth but stayed for the welcome.” There is also high public

support for places where different communities and generations can “meet and mix” to help social cohesion, and they are a strong indicator of community health. An ambitious new plan for clubs should be part of the Labour Party’s offer to left behind communities, given that working class clubs are at “the heart of Labour heritage”, McNeill said.

McNeill urges the next government to revive clubs by offering the ones that are falling into disuse or disrepair for ‘community right to buy’. This could be underpinned by the UK-wide Community Ownership Fund which has already

supported the purchase of community assets in each of the nations, McNeill said.

In her essay for the SMF, McNeill sets out her 21st Century Clubs’ Charter, with a call for the government to:

• Use its convening power to catalyse private funding.

• Work with broadcasters to offer better TV sport deals.

• Create new apprenticeships.

• Streamline training and support.

• Explore channelling existing funds into clubs

VULCAN TO THE SKY TRUST OPEN DAYS TAKE FLIGHT

supporters of the avro Vulcan XH558 are being invited to attend a series of open days giving them the chance to see the iconic aircraft up close in the coming weeks.

Four special events have been created and will take place on April 28, May 12, May 19 and June 9 where visitors will be able to enjoy time in the presence of British aviation history.

Marc Walters, chief executive of Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST) said: “We are thrilled to be

able to once again invite supporters to book on one of our special tours to see XH558. There are eight sessions available across the four event dates, where visitors will get the opportunity to walk beneath the iconic aircraft’s huge delta-wing and view the thousands of names displayed beneath this much-loved aircraft. There will also be the chance to speak to our volunteer engineering team to find out what it takes to maintain a Vulcan.

“We are pleased to be

working with the City of Doncaster Council, as the leaseholders for the airport, and our current landlords to be able to put these events on.”

There will be two sessions on each of the dates, a morning session will begin at 10am and an afternoon session at 1pm.

“The sessions will begin with a briefing and then each tour will spend approximately 90 minutes at the aircraft where visitors will be able to see the names on the aircraft, which is something that is extremely important to a

lot of our supporters, and they will also be able to access the cockpit.

“We know how important these tours are and they tend to sell out within a day of being put on sale. We are hoping to add even more dates in the coming months and we look forward to working with the successful company who will eventually reopen the airport as we work to secure our longterm future in Doncaster.”

vOlUNTEER fOR GRIEf spaCE

National healthcare and bereavement charity, Sue Ryder is on the lookout for volunteers in Sheffield to come on board and assist with the launch of a new community initiative, based at the Sheffield United football stadium, offering vital support to local people experiencing grief. The Bramall Lane based club’s Community Foundation is teaming up with the charity, which supports people through the most difficult times of their lives, whether that’s a terminal illness or the death of a loved one, to launch a new weekly Grief Kind Space from Wednesday 29th May’24. To get the initiative off the ground, the charity needs local volunteers who would be willing to listen and support people in their own communities who are grieving and need more support. Sue Ryder’s Grief Kind Spaces will be free weekly drop-in sessions, run by trained volunteers who will provide a safe and supportive space for people who have experienced a bereavement to come together. Sue Ryder hopes the Grief Kind Spaces will go some way to reducing the isolation and loneliness experienced by people after somebody close to them has died.

Commenting on the need for volunteers to come forward and support the service, Area Coordinator Tracy Brierley said, “Almost every home in the UK has, or will experience the death of someone. Yet, our research tells us two out of three people who are grieving are still not getting the support they need. We spoke to 8,000 people who have been bereaved and many of them told us the support they really wanted was to meet and talk to others who had also been bereaved. That’s why we’re launching our Grief Kind Spaces. However, to open a Grief Kind Space here in

Sheffield we need local residents to volunteer with us. All volunteers joining us will be offered training which will equip them in their role. If you are interested in joining us in bringing Grief Kind Spaces to Sheffield, please get in touch. You don’t need to have experience or have done anything like this before - just have a willingness to support others.”

Also commenting on plans for the new bereavement service, Beth Wragg of Sheffield United FC Community Foundation said, “Harnessing the power of Sheffield United Football Club, Sheffield United Community Foundation delivers bespoke programmes that tackle inequalities and provide opportunities to improve people’s lives and develop communities across Sheffield. It is important for us to work with a variety of services, charities, education establishments and organisations across Sheffield that can provide the right support for people. Sue Ryder’s Grief Kind spaces will help to provide bereavement support in partnership with us and we are delighted that we can work with the charity to support everyone approaching the end of their life or living with grief.”

The Sue Ryder Grief Kind Space in Sheffield will be held at Sheffield United Football Club, Blades Family Hub, John Street and will be a community service offering a trusted, safe place for people in Sheffield to meet and talk about their bereavement.

RUNNING fOR lEUkaEMIa

A three-year-old girl from Sheffield who spent nearly a third of her life in hospital being treated for leukaemia is living up to her nickname, ‘Billie the Brave’ Billie Turner was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in November 2022.

Since then, she’s had five rounds of chemotherapy, immunotherapy treatment and steroids. One round of chemotherapy paralysed her vocal cords and left her with an airway the size of the inside of a biro pen. Billie was struggling to breathe and so she needed a tracheostomy. This had a huge impact on Billie’s ability to talk so her family, including six-year-old sister Ada, learnt Makaton, a form of sign language which supports the spoken word, to communicate. When the tracheostomy is removed, which should be next year, Billie will get her voice back and with the help of speech and language therapists, she will learn to talk.

Mum Freyja, said: “I knew deep down something was wrong with her, but we never expected leukaemia. It felt like the world was about to end. We have been in and out of hospital for almost 18 months now – all this treatment, including a period of intensive care, feels relentless. Friends and family rallied round, including Freyja’s childhood best friend, Hannah Smith, 23, from Charnock, Gleadles. Hannah also ran the London Marathon for Leukaemia UK. This will help to raise funds to

research to kinder, more effective treatments for children like Billie who are diagnosed with leukaemia. Leukaemia is the most common type of childhood cancer, accounting for around a third of all cancers in those under 15 years old. She said “Billie’s superhuman fighting spirit has been inspirational. Though it’s been heartbreaking seeing Freyja and Zac experience what no family should ever have to go through, they really are a true inspiration to everyone around them and have shown amazing strength. I am so proud to be running the London Marathon for Leukaemia UK so I can play my small part in helping find kinder treatments for this awful disease.”

Hannah, who is one of 50 runners taking part in the London Marathon for Leukaemia UK this year, has already exceeded her £2,000 target. Hanna Chorley, Community and Challenge Events Manager at Leukaemia UK, said: “Whilst nine out of ten children survive, the treatments are harsh and have remained largely unchanged since the 1960s. We hope to raise almost £100k in this year’s London Marathon to go towards researching treatments that are better and kinder, and don’t take such a huge physical and emotional toll on both those who are diagnosed and those who care for them.”

Sophie Andrews, Adoptions Coordinator at Blue Cross in Sheffield said: “These girls are more entertaining than the TV. They love to play hide and seek in their bedding, digging so deep you’d think they were searching for gold.”

Cheese is brown and Pickle is white. When not digging away, they scamper around their tunnels and climb around their cage to take in different views. They also adore foraging for food and gnawing on cardboard. After their

adventures they enjoy cuddling up for a snooze.

JETHRO TULL CELEBRATE THEIR SEVENTH DECADE AT THE CITY HALL

Jethro Tull’s The Seven Decades Tour that will be arriving at Sheffield City Hall on Friday, 03 May 2024. The 11-date tour will indulge fans with songs spanning the band’s entire catalogue of music from their 1968 debut album ‘This Was’ through to their latest album ‘RökFlöte’ that was released earlier this year. With Ian Anderson as ever central to the performance, this tour will encapsulate the seven decades in which Jethro Tull wrote and performed music. Through their 23 studio albums, they have continued to push the boundaries of their music. With Ian’s unique and iconic flute playing paired with his distinct vocal, they are one of the most important and distinctive bands the UK have ever produced and Ian’s desire to continually innovate has ensured they remain as relevant around the world today as they did in the seventies.

Upon announcing the tour, Ian Anderson, the band’s founding member, said, “We have been playing UK tours in many of the same venues for the past 55 years.

Rotherham United manager Steve Evans was full of praise for his side’s endeavour upon his return to the home dugout at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

“I think we were almost up to 20% up on every player based on distances, high speeds and intensities versus all season and that is to their credit.

“I think we probably lacked a bit of quality or luck in the final third, especially in the first half when we had really good opportunities to hurt them.

“That seems heavily critical because we’ve lost key players again. I’m not going to moan about injured players over the course of the season but the boys we’ve brought off the bench have put in big performances too.

‘Stern’ McCann hails incredible comeback

Grant McCann was delighted that stern words at half time were taken in the right spirit by his players as Rovers delivered a remarkable comeback against Barrow.

The Rovers boss admitted being particularly critical of his side at the break as they found themselves two goals down to the play-off chasers. “It’s nothing to do with my team talk - it’s what the boys delivered on the pitch. It’s as simple as that. “They had to go and put what we said onto the pitch. To come back like we did - we were in total control and I don’t think we gave them a sniff at all in the second half.”

McCann said the manner of the win was among the best of his career - and certainly the pinnacle of the winning streak to date.

“It’s right up there,” he said. “I said to the boys at half time that of all the wins we’ve had, this would be the best one if we could come back.

“In the first half we weren’t good enough. We actually played into what they wanted us to do. We didn’t move the ball quick enough and we didn’t commit.

“The big message this week was to commit people because of their shape. They set up with an extra midfield player in a 4-5-1 and it’s very difficult to break down. It’s how Barrow play and it’s how they’ve been successful. If you’re loose on it they can punish you.”
