NEW PARKING RULES AIM TO IMPROVE SAFETY
New parking enforcement rules are to be introduced across Sheffield aimed at making roads and pavements safer for cyclists and pedestrians.
From Monday 20 May, motorists could be issued a penalty charge if they park across dropped kerbs (which have been lowered for vehicle access or pedestrians), in cycle lanes, or are not parked close to the kerb.
HGVs will also not be allowed to park with wheels on the footway, unless loading (as allowed by national regulations), while nonlicenced vehicles parked up and offering goods for sale may also be penalised.
The new enforcement rules have been introduced following a recent consultation where over half of those who replied had experienced vehicles blocking their driveways while over 70% said they had experienced vehicles blocking pedestrians, dropped kerbs and double parking.
Motorists who are found to be breaking the new enforcement rules and causing obstruction to other road users, could face a fine of £70, reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days.
Richard Eyre, Director of Streetscene and Regulation at Sheffield City Council, said: “The aim of these new enforcement rules is
to keep pedestrians and cyclists safe on Sheffield’s roads and these new rules allow the council to enforce against obstructive parking that could previously only be enforced by the police.
“Double parking, for example, may obstruct other road users including emergency services vehicles while
parking in front of dropped kerbs can put people with visual impairments, or with restricted mobility at risk as well as impacting drivers trying to enter or leave a premises.”
* Drivers are also reminded they need to obtain a pay and display ticket or PaybyPhone session as soon as they park their vehicle.
If drivers are short of cash, many locations now offer an option to pay by card at a machine while PaybyPhone allows drivers to pay via an app, online www. paybyphone.co.uk or by telephone.
Failure to display a valid parking ticket could result in a fine of £50, reduced to £25 if paid within 14 days.

LIAM GALLAGHER DEFINITELY KICKS OFF HIS ANNIVERSARY TOUR IN SHEFFIELD
Liam Gallagher opens his Definitely Maybe 30 years Anniversary Tour right here in Sheffield at the Utilita Arena on Saturday 1 June 2024 - tickets are now on general sale from www.utiltaarenasheffield. co.uk. It would be hard to top Liam Gallagher’s biblical Knebworth Park shows, which proved to be some of the biggest live events of 2022. But the always ambitious icon has once again excelled himself with news of a tour that will be bigger than biblical. Liam will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of Oasis’s all-
conquering and massively influential debut album by embarking upon the ‘Definitely Maybe 30 Years’ arena tour in 2024. The tour will see Liam perform the ‘Definitely Maybe’ album in full for the first time, along with some select b-sides from the era. The sets will of course be packed with classics –‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Star’, ‘Live Forever’, ‘Supersonic’ and ‘Cigarettes & Alcohol’, to name but a few. But it will also be a rare opportunity to see other album tracks that have rarely, if ever, been performed since the mid-‘90s, including ‘Up
In The Sky’ and ‘Digsy’s Dinner’. And there are numerous fan favourites that could be performed from the other songs that were released during the ‘Definitely Maybe’ era, which could potentially include another big hit in the shape of ‘Whatever’ as well as deep cuts such as ‘Fade Away’, ‘Listen Up’ and ‘Sad Song’. The 12-date ‘Definitely Maybe 30 Years’ tour starts right in Sheffield on Saturday 1 June 2024. Liam says, “I’m bouncing around the house to announce the Definitely Maybe Tour. The most important album of the
‘90s bar none. I wouldn’t be anywhere without it and neither would you, so let’s celebrate together LG x” After becoming the foremost frontman of his generation with Oasis, Liam Gallagher’s solo career has been a story of a remarkable rebirth – and one that has introduced his talents to a whole new audience. It has seen him score five UK #1 albums in just six years: his three studio sets, ‘As You Were’, ‘Why Me? Why Not.’ and ‘C’MON YOU KNOW’ plus the live records ‘MTV Unplugged’ and ‘Knebworth 22’. SHE may be pushing 76, but that isn’t stopping one daredevil gran from taking part in an exhilarating charity feat.
Chris Low, a retired vicar, will tackle a 90ft abseil drop from Millers Dale Bridge on the Peak District’s Monsal Trail into a narrow gorge below. It’s in aid of the Sheffield-based Support Dogs charity, which provides and trains assistance dogs to help autistic children and adults with epilepsy or a physical disability to live more safely and independently.
Chris, who is an associate minister for St John’s Church in Chapeltown and St Saviour’s in High Green, as well as a retired teacher, turns 76 two days before the charity challenge later this month. She said:
“Unless you have an illness or disability, age in itself is in your head. You’re as young as your body lets you be and your mind lets you be. I’m not ready to say ‘I can’t’ yet.”
The thrill-seeking mumof-two and grandmotherof-two last did an abseil around 30 years ago, during a school trip to Butlin’s at Minehead, encouraging Year 7s to follow her lead. “That was down a cliff face and I’ve never done one into mid-air – it’s a totally new experience for me,” said Chris, who lives with husband John, also a retired teacher.
For her 70th birthday, Chris went on a New Zealand zip trek, whizzing through the treetops over the South Island on a zipwire. She said: “There were 10 of us and I was the ‘granny’ of all of them. Most were 18 to 30 and quite apprehensive. The chief guide, after the first go, sussed out I was game for most things, so he kept sending me off first.” Chris and John also tackled whitewater rapids in
Chattanooga, Tennessee, when they were in their 60s. Cornwall-born Chris was one of the first female priests to be ordained in North Devon before following her daughter, Sonja and son-in-law John to Yorkshire 20 years ago. She has been a volunteer foster carer for Support Dogs for around 10 years and has looked after 16 dogs for the charity, which does not use boarding kennels.
Chris and John, whose son Pierren and his family live in New Zealand, are currently looking after a dog called Mackay and former charge Dug recently qualified as an autism assistance dog. Explaining her motivation for supporting the charity, with her good deeds also including putting on talks to raise awareness, she said: “We are well aware of the fabulous work they do and the transformative effect the dogs have on people’s lives.” Chris will be cheered on during the abseil by her family, as well as members of Winn Gardens Foodbank, which she supports and the local branch of Soroptimists International, a femalefocussed charity and lobbying group. There is still time to sign up for Support Dogs’ abseil, which takes place from 9.30am on Saturday, May 18. It is open to anyone aged nine upwards and is supported by fullyqualified instructors. Minimum sponsorship is £75.

Multi-million pound investment work to future-proof and extend the lifespan of the Supertram network will be taking place for nine days from 24 May. The first phase of rail replacement engineering work will start in Sheffield city centre from after the last tram on the evening of Friday 24 May until start of service on Monday 3 June and will affect all tram and Tram Train services. During the works, carried out by contractor VolkerRail, no tram services will be able to operate between Fitzalan Square/Ponds Forge and University. Melanie Corcoran of SYMCA, said: “These essential works are vital to extend the lifespan of the Supertram network. By replacing the track we’re making sure the region’s tram network can continue to safely provide its popular service for generations to come.” In addition, works will be carried out at Netherthorpe Road tram stop to replace the tram shelters. To ensure the health and safety of both the passengers and site workers, the platform will be closed throughout the works. Trams will not serve Netherthorpe Road tram stop and will, instead, run directly between University and Shalesmoor tram stops, in both directions. Customers travelling towards Middlewood/Malin Bridge should use either the University or Shalesmoor tram stops. Those wishing to travel towards Sheffield city centre should use the bus stop on Broad Lane/Beet Steet to access the dedicated tram replacement bus service, TR1. Revised services
To allow the essential engineering works to take place between Cathedral and the junction above Park Square roundabout, tram and Tram Train services will be subject to alteration from Saturday 25 May until start of service on Monday 3 June. West Street, City Hall,
Cathedral, Castle Square and Fitzalan Square/Ponds Forge tram stops will not be served.
During the works, the Supertram network will run a revised timetable as follows:
• Blue Route services will run between Malin Bridge P&R and University of Sheffield only (omitting Netherthorpe Road tram stop) with a reduced frequency of every 20 minutes during the day.
• Yellow Route services will run between Middlewood P&R and University of Sheffield only (omitting Netherthorpe Road tram stop) with a reduced frequency of every 20 minutes during the day.
• Purple Route services will run between Herdings Park and Cricket Inn Road only every 60 minutes.
• Temporary Green Route services will run between Halfway and Meadowhall Interchange - serving stops on the Blue Route between Halfway and Sheffield Station and the Yellow Route between Hyde Park and Meadowhall Interchange - up to every 12 minutes during the day.
• Tram Train services will run between Rotherham Parkgate and Sheffield Station only to the normal frequency of two services per hour.
Customers can view the revised timetables via the online Timetable Finder by searching for “Supertram”. Tram replacement bus service TR1 will run between the University of Sheffield and Shrewsbury Road and serve bus stops located near all the affected tram stops along the route as follows:
• Monday to Saturday: every 6 minutes from approx. 05:30 until 20:00, then every 15 minutes until approx. 00:50
• Sunday: every 6 minutes from approx. 07:00 until 19:00, then every 15 minutes until 00:40.
Alternatively, local bus services are available, but customers will have to pay to travel as usual.
avOId HMRC sCaMMERs!
Summer is a time to unwind and relax, but it’s also when scammers get creative, hoping to catch you off guard with their schemes. Finance expert Gary Hemming helps you navigate the potential pitfalls to some of the most common HMRC scams you need to be aware of this summer and how to protect yourself.
Fake Tax Refunds
Have you received an unexpected text or email saying you’re eligible for a tax refund? It’s likely a scam! Scammers will provide a link asking for personal or financial details under the guise of a refund. HMRC will never ask for such information via text or email.
Threatening Phone Calls
You might receive a call claiming you’ll be arrested if you don’t pay a supposed tax debt immediately. This is a fear tactic to pressure you into providing sensitive information or making immediate payments. Remember, HMRC won’t resort to threats or arrest warrants over the phone.
Phishing Emails
Scammers can make emails look like they are from HMRC, asking for bank details to process a refund. Always doublecheck the email address and content. Grammatical errors or unusual domain names are red flags. If you are uncertain, directly contact HMRC via their official channels.
Gift Card Scams
Scammers often request that fines or penalties be paid via gift cards, which is a clear sign of fraudulent activity. HMRC only accepts payments through official channels, never
through unconventional means like gift cards.
Tax Credits Fraud
Beware of anyone posing as an HMRC representative offering assistance with tax credits. Scammers often request sensitive personal information or upfront fees. Always verify the identity of anyone who contacts you regarding tax credits.
Social Media Messages
Scammers are active on social media, too. Fake profiles may message you, claiming to be HMRC, and ask for personal or financial details. HMRC will never reach out via social media.
Self-Assessment Scam Be cautious of communications stating that your self-assessment details require urgent action. If you’re unsure, contact HMRC directly through their official website.
How to Protect Yourself Contact HMRC Directly: If you receive any suspicious communication, contact HMRC through their official website or phone numbers. Report Scams: Report all scam emails or messages to HMRC. This will help prevent further fraud attempts.
Be Skeptical: Avoid sharing sensitive personal or financial information through unsolicited messages.
Gary adds: “Scammers thrive on creating panic and urgency to manipulate people. Always take a step back, verify information through official channels, and never hesitate to ask for help from HMRC if you’re unsure. Stay vigilant and spread the word to protect yourself and others.”
MaYOR’s TRaNspORT plEdGE
The newly re-elected Mayor of South Yorkshire, Oliver Coppard, has set out his vision to connect people across South Yorkshire to opportunities through an integrated public transport network that puts people at its centre.
Key announcements the Mayor has made on the first day of his new term in office include:
• A commitment to start rolling out an integrated public transport system across South Yorkshire which connects buses, Supertram and active travel, by 2028
• A decision on bus reform to be taken within 12 months
• Plans for Supertram extensions to be set out in 2025 and put to initial public consultation, ahead of proposals being taken to Government
• Doncaster / Sheffield Airport Sustainable Aviation Hub development to progress alongside plans to re-open the airport
• A pledge to fully involve local people and ensure communities shape plans for South Yorkshire’s integrated public transport network
These announcements support the Mayor’s vision for a public transport network with people at its heart -
connecting local people to jobs, opportunities and healthcare services in a comfortable, affordable and safe way. South Yorkshire’s integrated transport network will be designed in partnership with communities to support the region’s ambitions – helping to grow our economy, reducing health inequalities and improving our environment.
The Mayor has set out his priorities for a transformed public transport network at the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre. Despite many communities being geographically close to the Advanced Manufacturing Park and the AMRC Training Centre – a place of excellence attracting highly skilled people and providing training opportunities through apprenticeships, many local people struggle to access the area by public transport which closes them off to these opportunities. Analysis commissioned by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority found that fewer than 1% of people across South Yorkshire live within a 30-minute public transport journey of the Advanced Manufacturing Park.

Launching this Summer, Crossed Wires festival is assembling the nation’s top names in podcasting in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, for one weekend.
From Friday 31st May to Sunday 2nd June, Sheffield’s most iconic venues will be packed for blockbuster lives shows, neverseen-before performances and special guests. The star-studded lineup of names includes, Katherine Ryan, Adam Buxton, Brown Girls Do It Too, Danny Robins, Katie Price, Jon Ronson, Romesh Ranganathan & Tom Davis and Robert Diamond & Russell Tovey.
Alongside the ticketed events, Crossed Wires is proud to introduce The Fringe – a free venue dedicated to showcasing the industry’s vibrant talent and
offering creative experiences that money can’t buy.
The Fringe will take place in the heart of Sheffield’s city centre, nestled in Bethel Chapel, just steps away from City Hall. This iconic building was once home to the beloved Coles toyshop and now Crossed Wires Festival is poised to present an exciting one off event before it opens as a new music venue later this year.
The opening of The Fringe will be kicked off by a night of free music on Friday, including a DJ set from award-winning musician Self-Esteem, which attendees can wash down with a special ‘Podcask’ beer at the official Crossed Wires Bar.
Across the weekend, Bethel Chapel will host a range of free events, workshops and talks, all designed to unleash the
creativity of this rapidly evolving industry. This will be further complimented by the adjoining food hall, Cambridge Street Collective, providing a space to eat, meet and socialise amongst the action.
Free shows on offer across the weekend include:
Football Heaven
The team will take to Sheffield City Hall’s Oval Hall, for an onstage celebration of the South Yorkshire institution, covering the region’s highs and lows of football. With special guests including the assistant manager of Royal Oak FC Steve Bracknall, this is Football Heaven like you’ve never seen it before!
The Naked Podcast Two friends, one guest, no
clothes. Best mates Jenny Eells and Kat Harbourne are on a mission to challenge the ways we think about our bodies. Join Jen and Kat for a wild ride, as they bring their candid and revealing conversations to the stage... possibly making you question everything that’s underneath your clothes!
Tortoise presents... Alexi Mostrous in conversation with Charlie Webster
Two Titans of investigative podcasting take to the stage to share their secrets and discuss investigative journalism in podcasting. Tortoise’s Alexi Monstrous is behind some of the most talked about podcasts of the past few years, including Sweet Bobby, Hoaxed and Who Trolled Amber? Charlie Webster is an award-winning broadcaster and creator of the hit true crime show, Scamanda.
The Price of Music with Steve Lamacq
British radio DJ Steve Lamacq is a widely respected and influential broadcaster, having spent three decades on BBC Radio One and BBC 6 Music. Music Ally’s Stuart Dredge has been writing about the business side of the music industry for two decades. Together, they demystify the music industry and look at the money behind the business.
The Fringe will transform the Bethel Chapel into a hub of entertainment and education curated for the whole family. Kids will be able to enjoy the soft play area before an afternoon of storytelling, whilst students and adults can attend workshops to learn the ropes of the audio industry before heading to one of the venue’s eclectic mix of live shows.
Truly sharing a vision for a significant and inspiring national festival outside London, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority will be Crossed Wires’ regional partner and host sponsor. Sheffield City Council have also awarded funds to help firmly place the festival on the UK’s cultural calendar.

'Barnum' brings to life the story of P.T. Barnum, the famous American showman and founder of the Barnum and Bailey Circus. Recognise the name Barnum? That's probably because you've seen 'The Greatest Showman', but this musical goes into much more detail about his rise to fame.
The show combines razzle and dazzle with charm and brass to sell "humbug" to the cheering crowds. It's a joyful and moving musical, a colourful, dynamic circus spectacular with heart.
Cy Coleman and Michael Stewart's energetic score

Jonney Gloves plays the leading man, he says "we've worked so hard on this show and can't wait to finally get an audience in to show them what we've got. It's a musical that is filled with colour and life, and even a tightrope!"
The show runs from the 11th to the 15th of June 2024 at the EPPiC Theatre in Ecclesfield. Visit www.ticketsource.co.uk, or call 0114 4388698, to book your tickets and come follow the band!

FOOTBALLR UNDUP
WILdER HAILS FANS AFTER NARROW dEFEAT
United boss Chris Wilder again hailed the incredible support his side received from the Blades supporters despite a 1-0 defeat to Everton.
Abdoulaye Doucouré’s first half goal proved to be the difference with Wilder frustrated his
side couldn’t capitalise on their big moments in a close contest.
Wilder praised the level of support afforded to his team by a noisy away end who stayed behind to applaud their side after the full-time whistle.
“We have had parts
of the game; we have had more than enough to get something out of the game but the big moments again we don’t execute well enough and that’s been the difference.
In the position we are in, against a team who are on a good run, we
should have rewarded our supporters with a result. It is the same.
I am dealing with the same characters, so that has to change, something has to change from that point of view which it will do.
“We will, next year, when we go away,
them supporters won’t be singing out of pride of their football club, they’ll be singing out of pride for that team that goes out there and represents them, getting the results that they deserve and what we should be getting as a football club.”
Pride and bitter disappointment for McCann with play-off defeat
Grant McCann spoke of pride and failure as he attempted to sum up his feelings following Rovers’ exit from the Sky Bet League Two playoffs on penalties.
Crewe Alexandra scored twice in the opening 15 minutes of the second leg at the Eco-Power Stadium to wipe away Rovers’ advantage from the first leg.
Though they did not get going in the first half, Rovers responded well in the second half and pushed hard through extra time to find a winner in the tie.
The game went to penalties, with Crewe triumphing 4-3 from the spot to secure a place in the final.
Though devastated by the defeat, McCann was able to briefly reflect on his side’s incredible run to secure a play-off place which brought just one defeat in 18 matches and a club record-equalling ten game winning run.
“I’m really proud of the boys,” he said. “I’m really proud of how we’ve turned our season around. I don’t think anyone would have given us any hope of getting to where we did.
“Ultimately we’ve failed, that’s what we’ve done and I said that to the players.
“That hurts. It really hurts me to say that but it’s the truth. We came here to try to get out of this league, we recruited well to do that but we haven’t done it.
“I’m just gutted. Really disappointed. The changing room is really flat and down.
“We just didn’t get going in the first half. We were disappointing, poor. We didn’t win enough duels and second balls, There was no energy about us.
“But I think from half time onwards we showed
what we have been and unfortunately we just didn’t get the goal - that bit of magical quality to get us what we needed.”
Almost 13,000 supporters packed into the Eco-Power Stadium for the game with Rovers supporters energised by the positive momentum of recent months.
But McCann said he felt that they had let down everyone associated with the club with the defeat.
“It’s really raw. I’m low, flat and down,” he said. “I feel like we’ve let everybody down.
“I think it’s the first time the stadium has been full like this for many years and we gave them nothing, particularly in the first half. The fans kept going but we didn’t give them enough.
“I’m gutted for the fans, the players, for my staff and everyone associated with the football club because we feel like we’ve brought this club back together again with everyone singing off the same hymnsheet.
“It just wasn’t to be in the end.”
“This club shouldn’t be in League Two,” McCann said. “You see that tonight with 13,000 fans here.
“Ultimately we haven’t done the job. It’s really hurtful for me.
“I said to the players after that we will be going to win the league next season. There’s no question about that.
“And I said if there’s anyone who doesn’t think we can, tell your agent to call me and find a new club.
There’s no way I’m waiting for my team to get going for another three or four months like I did at the start of this season.
“Some of the players have got a decision to make because if they’re not ready to come back and win the league they don’t need to come back.
“A lot of players have signed new contracts and we’re in negotiations with two or three of them. Now this is done we’ll put deadlines on decisions and if they haven’t agreed, we’ll have to look at other options because we can’t wait forever.
“At this moment in time I’m not thinking about that, just how much we have let everyone down.”

Owls midfielder Will Vaulks has been voted as the swfc.co.uk
2023/24 Player of the Year!
Supporters have had their say via the club’s official website and Vaulks has come out on top with 29% of the vote.
The 30-year-old was a vital cog in the engine room all throughout the battle for Championship survival.
In total, Vaulks made 37 appearances during the campaign.
TEE OFF WITH THE MILLERS
Rotherham United are inviting supporters to join them on their annual Golf Day on Wednesday 3rd July 2024.
This popular summer event in the commercial calendar is once again upon us with bookings now being taken for teams to compete in the event which will once again be held at Wath Golf Club.
In previous years, supporters have been joined on the course by Chairman Tony Stewart and a number of first team players, with their attendance set to be confirmed following the summer when boss Steve Evans has assembled his squad for the 2024/25 campaign.
The format of the day will see teams arrive at Wath Golf Club from 7:45am where they will be able to enjoy breakfast sandwiches and tea and coffee before heading out onto the course for a 9am shotgun start.
Whilst completing their round, players will have the opportunity to win prizes alongside the first place and runners-up gongs such as ‘Nearest the Line’ and ‘Nearest the Pin’.
Guests will also be welcome to enjoy some liquid refreshment in the form of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages from the halfway house located on the course, with snacks also available to pick up to enjoy for the remainder of the round. Golfers will then retire to the clubhouse for a twocourse meal and presentation ceremony. The event is priced at £450 + VAT per team of four golfers.

As well as receiving the supporters’ vote for the main club award, Vaulks was named as the PFA Player in the Community for the 2023/24 season.
It was the third time Vaulks has received the award for continuing to go over and above what is expected from players in terms of community activities.
He was also voted as the SODA (Sheffield Owls Disabled Association) Player of the Year last week.
The top three results are as follows:
1. Will Vaulks 29%, 2. Barry Bannan 17%
3. Di’Shon Bernard 15%.
Anthony Musaba has been crowned as the 2023/24 Michael Plumb Player of the Year. The award is named in memory of long-term supporter Michael Plumb who generously bequeathed a donation to the Owls in his will when he passed.
Michael was a regular traveller on the Inter City Owl and the award is based solely on away performances. Musaba, who joined the Owls last summer, enjoyed a strong debut season and chipped in with eight goals in all competitions, seven in the Championship, and five assists.
Supporters on the Inter City Owl have voted in favour of Musaba, who will now have his name engraved into the trophy.
The 23-year-old is only the second recipient of the award after Lee Gregory was named the winner in its inaugural year last season. Away from Hillsborough, Musaba made vital contributions in Wednesday’s fight for Championship survival. A stoppage-time winner at Stoke in December was amongst the highlights, while Musaba was also on target in vital wins at Millwall and QPR.
