REGION AWARDED £3.5M

South Yorkshire has been awarded more than £3.5m to become one of 15 pilot areas across England to deliver a new work and health service.

The region was selected by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) to deliver the WorkWell partnership (WorkWell), as part of the Government’s Back to Work Plan.

WorkWell will build on the successes of South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority’s flagship programme, Working Win, that has supported over 6,500 people with a disability or physical and or mental health condition to either start, stay, or succeed in employment since 2018.

Each pilot area will help to deliver the new work and health service. The service will offer a tailored early-intervention work and health support and assessment service, and a single, joined-up gateway to other support services.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard, who also chairs the region’s Integrated Care Partnership, said: “The poor health that scars our region doesn’t just hold back our economy, it stops people from making the most of their talents, and enjoying the lives they deserve. That’s why I’m determined to make South Yorkshire the healthiest region in the country, so everyone has the opportunity to stay near and go far. And now in support of

TO SUPPORT PEOPLE TO STAY IN WORK

that ambition, we’re able to build on our hugely successful Working Win programme with £3.5 million to develop WorkWell. That funding is both recognition of our ambition and our success to date, but most importantly it will genuinely help transform the lives of people across South Yorkshire.”

One of the main focusses of the Integrated Care Partnership Board in South Yorkshire is the relationship between employment and improving population health.

WorkWell will offer lowintensity holistic support to people in work who are struggling due to a health condition or disability, to overcome health related barriers to employment.

The WorkWell Partnership will enable a wide range of local organisations to connect individuals to the support they need. Partners across work and health, such as GPs, Primary Care services, Job Centre Plus, Local Authorities, Employers and the Voluntary Community Sector will be able to make referrals into this service later this year.

Christine Joy, Chief People Officer, said: “Through the pilot we’ll be looking to support those who are in work and have a health condition or disability who are either struggling with sickness absence or are at risk of falling out of work. In addition, through the pilot we want to support those who are currently out of work who have a health condition

or disability who require a small amount of support to return to work.

“Clearly there are people who have significant health conditions or disabilities for whom this pilot won’t support, and we’ll be continuing to provide support to those groups through existing programmes and initiatives.”

Partners across South Yorkshire are already working hard to support people into work and this investment will only boost this.

Anyone who doesn’t meet the criteria for support for the pilot, but still want support to start or stay in employment can visit the National Careers Service and Skills for Life website or SYMCA’s Working Win programme.

cameron Mackintosh, in association with Nick Grace Management, is delighted to announce that Alfie Boe and Killian Donnelly will share the role of Jean Valjean and Michael Ball and Bradley Jaden will share the role of Javert across the shows at Utilita Arena Sheffield.

Utilita Arena Sheffield proudly hosts the highly anticipated World Tour premiere of LES MISÉRABLES THE ARENA SPECTACULAR from 10-14 October 2024.

The tour opens with strictly limited UK dates, featuring 6 shows at the Utilita Arena Sheffield, the very same venue that Les Misérables played 35 performances in

back in 1999 – the longestever running touring show engagement in the arena’s history.

As the beloved musical phenomenon enters its 40th revolutionary year in London, this spectacular production will have an extraordinary new design specifically created for larger venues with a cast and orchestra of over 65.

Leading the cast, multiplatinum selling recording artist Alfie Boe OBE and acclaimed actor Killian Donnelly will share the iconic role of Jean Valjean, while the role of the relentless Javert will be portrayed by the incomparable Michael

Ball and the talented Bradley Jaden in the UK.

Victor Hugo’s classic tale is an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption – a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. With a magnificent score of iconic songs including, I Dreamed a Dream, On My Own, Bring Him Home, One Day More and more, this epic and uplifting story is undisputedly one of the world’s favourite musicals.

Cameron Mackintosh said:

“The spectacular world arena tour of the Les Misérables concert has been a dream of mine for many years. With

Les Mis’ 40th phenomenal year starting this October, there couldn’t be a better time for it to happen.

“A dream concert deserves a dream cast and I couldn’t be more thrilled to announce that the first UK leg of the tour, which opens in Belfast in September and is already more than two thirds sold out, will star Alfie Boe or Killian Donnelly as Jean Valjean and Michael Ball or Bradley Jaden as Javert, heading a cast and orchestra of over 65. Many other favourite Les Misérables performers, chosen from all over the world, will be announced in a few weeks’ time. After the UK, the world

Two police officers who swam out in freezing water to rescue an unconscious woman and her father have won a South Yorkshire Police Federation Bravery Award.

In the middle of the night on 28 August 2023, South Yorkshire Police received a 999 call from a man saying his daughter was suicidal and had gone into a canal in Barnsley. He was wading out to save her, but as he started to give an area description his phone cut out. PC Ben Child and PC Adam Morton arrived on the scene and initially couldn’t find the pair, but then they heard the man’s shouts for help. They found both of them in the canal, where the man was struggling but managing to hold his daughter’s head above water.

PC Morton recalled: “We couldn’t tell if she was conscious or breathing, so Ben and I just looked at each other and nodded, and then we took our body armour off and jumped in.”

The officers still had their boots on, which made swimming hard, as the water was much deeper than they’d realised and clogged up with reeds. PC Morton said: “We struggled to get across, so we had to float across on top of the reeds. The woman had got tangled up in them, and if we’d tried to swim through it we would have got tangled up as well.” Eventually the pair reached the father and daughter, who was unconscious, and got them out of the water and onto the bank. They were unable to climb further up, however, as it was full of brambles and thorns. Thankfully, the woman began breathing on her own and the officers

provided first aid. The father and daughter were taken to hospital to be treated and the daughter was given mental health support. The father later contacted the officers and the other emergency service teams to thank them for their actions and kindness.” PC Morton said he felt “privileged and honoured” to be nominated for a bravery award. He said: “It puts it into perspective, when you reflect on it. But if PC Child hadn’t been there as well, it could have been a different outcome. He did a really good job. He was making sure the woman was OK while I was keeping her warm, and he passed communications back to our colleagues on the other side of the canal.” PC Child said: “I was surprised to receive the nomination, but I was happy as I really didn’t expect it. After all, colleagues across South Yorkshire Police do amazing things every day.” South Yorkshire Police Federation Chair Steve Kent said: “What life saving heroes. This incident once again shows how police officers are much more than crime fighters. The officers’ decision to place themselves at such risk to save the lives of members of the public is testament to their selflessness, bravery and professionalism.”

PC Child and PC Morton will attend the South Yorkshire Police Federation Bravery Awards on Thursday 23 May. At the event a winner will be announced who will travel to London for the National Police Federation Bravery Awards in July.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard has announced a new Walk and Wheel Challenge for all schools in the region.

The challenge, to be held between the 17th and 28th of June, encourages every primary school child in South Yorkshire to walk, wheel or cycle to school each day, to become more active and healthier. The Mayor, alongside triple Olympic Champion and Active Travel Commissioner for South Yorkshire, Ed Clancy OBE, announced the new challenge as he walked with children to their school at Joseph Locke Primary School in Barnsley on Monday 20 May. They joined pupils at the school as part of Walk to School week, organised by Living Streets, to take part in a walk to school with them and an assembly to announce the new challenge.

The challenge forms part of the Mayor’s key manifesto commitment to make South Yorkshire the best place in the country to walk, wheel and cycle for our children, with an ambitious plan for active travel centred around schools.

Mayor Oliver Coppard said:

“We need to make sure that everyone in South Yorkshire has freedom and choice about how to travel and move, every day. That’s important at every age and stage of life, but nowhere is it more important than with our kids at school. Active travel is central to my vision of a better-connected South Yorkshire, but we simply must create a new generation who see the alternatives to just jumping in the car as an obvious first choice. That’s why we’re going to make South Yorkshire the best place in the country for children to walk, wheel and cycle, and why we’re now launching my Mayor’s Walk and Wheel challenge this Walk to School Week.”

The 10-day challenge involves encouraging every primary aged child in the region to choose Active Travel as their way of getting to and from school each day.

South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority is delivering an activity programme to schools for the two weeks of the challenge, so kids learn all about how Active Travel can make the journey to school that bit more fun. Plus, every participating school will have the chance of winning prizes, including bikes, scooter racks and a VIP session with Ed Clancy. Active Travel Commissioner Ed Clancy also visited pupils at Marlcliffe Primary School in Sheffield on Tuesday 21 May to greet them as they arrive at school, before leading an assembly. The challenge announcement comes during Walk to School Week. Walk to School week is organised by Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, as part of their National Walking Month campaign each May. Families are encouraged to walk, wheel, cycle, scoot or ‘Park and Stride’ for the whole week to see the big differences that come from small steps, from healthier and happier children to fewer cars outside the school gates.

Jim Shaw of Living Streets said: “Getting out of the front door in the morning with kids can be hectic, so it’s no surprise that parents say a lack of time stops them walking to school.

“However, walking the last ten minutes can still provide families with all those health and happiness benefits, in the same time that they would have been sitting in traffic. Walk to School Week is the perfect opportunity to give a new routine a try.”

The Blades’ legend, Tony Currie has come on board to help Sue Ryder launch its Grief Kind Space at the Sheffield United stadium, giving fans and members of the local community who are grieving the chance to access informal, peer-to-peer bereavement support in the city.

As part of a drive to give people dealing with the death of a loved one the chance to share their feelings and experiences, the national bereavement charity has teamed up with the Bramall Lane based club’s Community Foundation, to launch a new weekly Grief Kind Space from Wednesday 29th May 2024, between 12.30-2.30pm. It is hoped that the free weekly dropin sessions, which are led by trained local volunteers, will help alleviate the isolation and loneliness felt by many people in the area, when a loved one has died. Commenting on the launch of the new service at the Sheffield United stadium, Sheffield United’s former midfielder and Club Ambassador, Tony Currie said, “Unfortunately, grief is something that will touch almost all of our lives at some stage but thanks to charities like Sue Ryder, no one should have to face it alone. Given that providing opportunities to improve people’s lives is one of our Community Foundation’s major aims, it is with great pleasure I welcome the charity’s Grief Kind Space

to the club’s grounds and am delighted we can work together to offer support to everyone in our community dealing with the death of a loved one.”

Also commenting on the Sheffield’s new Grief Kind Space, Sue Ryder’s Grief Kind Space Area Coordinator, Tracy Brierley said, “Quite often people feel like they are a burden speaking about their grief to friends or family, but our Grief Kind Space volunteers help remove that feeling, so people can talk, listen to others who might be experiencing the same as them, and gain support. We have seen such an incredible impact from our Grief Kind Spaces across the country, so we’re thrilled that thanks to the amazing backing from our friends at Sheffield United and our brilliant Sue Ryder volunteers, we can provide more of this vital support to many people in Sheffield.”

The Sue Ryder Grief Kind Space in Sheffield will be held at Sheffield United Football Club, Blades Family Hub, John Street, S2 4QX. In a new campaign, the charity Crimestoppers is asking people in Yorkshire and the Humber to raise the alarm about modern day slavery anonymously, as the number of victims has vastly increased over the past decade. It is estimated that 130,000 people are currently subjected to slavery in the UK.

The true scale of people being exploited, abused and used as modern slaves is unknown as most victims suffer silently behind closed doors. This type of exploitation is typically hidden in plain sight without us even realising it. Modern slavery can take many forms including sexual exploitation, forced labour, domestic servitude, debt bondage and forced criminal and commercial sexual exploitation.

In recent years Unseen, the anti-slavery charity, has seen a worrying rise in calls about care sector workers being abused. It follows changes in the rules to make it easier for overseas social care staff to work in the UK, with the aim of filling thousands of job vacancies. Most exploited care workers are women from overseas, working long and gruelling hours – often 20 hours each day. In some cases, they earn as little as £2 per hour. Those most at risk appear to be care workers

from India, Zimbabwe and Nigeria. Some have paid huge sums of money to unscrupulous employers or recruitment agencies to come to the UK on special visas designed to fill vacancies in the care sector. Often the workers do not understand their rights in the UK, which leaves them vulnerable to further abuse. Gemma Gibbs of Crimestoppers, said: “The victims of modern slavery are living in fear of the people who have trafficked or enslaved them. Our charity is fully behind efforts to get them out of their exploitative and often inhumane circumstances. They sadly often do not know their rights or how to raise concerns. You may be someone who goes to a nail salon or to a car wash, or you could be someone visiting a care setting or attending an adult day care centre to visit an older relative. Those who are victims need people like us to speak up on their behalf, so please be aware so you can spot the signs of exploitation and contact us 100% anonymously. Crimestoppers UK Contact Centre is open 24/ 7, 365 days a year. Your information can make a huge difference to someone’s life.”

‘EvEryonE in this Union has a part to play’

The CIU’s 160th Annual General Meeting took place on Saturday, April 20th in Blackpool and saw Union Vice-President Ken Roberts CMD ACM list the many benefits of Union membership enjoyed by clubs before calling on members to further support the CIU.

“The Union is and always will be a partnership,” he said during his address to delegates.

“We all have a part to play. You can only take out of a partnership what you or someone else puts in.

“You can keep your members up to date with the Union’s work by displaying posters and notices on your boards and your social media pages.

“You can encourage your members to read the Club Journal which contains useful information.

“You can encourage your committees and members to take up the Union’s Award in Club Management.

“You can encourage your

committees and members to resurrect the Union’s recreation programme.

“You can encourage your committees and members to support your branches by purchasing their goods and usingtheir services.

“You can show interest in their recreational activities and attend their branch council meetings.

“You can get in touch with your club’s constituency MP to get them involved in the Union’s parliamentary groups so we can fight back against those people who don’t like us.

“You can get your committees andmembers to support the Union’s National Draw.

“You can get your committees to support the Union’s preferred suppliers and, of course, you can encourage your members to support the Union bybuying the CIU Pass Card.

“Now let’s crack on and help this

great Union to be here for another 160years.”

During the meeting a Motion was passed to increase the annual fee paid by clubs per member from 50p to £1, the first increase in the annual fee since 2011.

During his address, Kenneth D Green CMD ACM, General Secretary, said: “Much has been said about club subscriptions and Union fees today.

“The Union’s fees have always

been levied in a fair manner that is per member and naturally the club with more members pay more.

“Please do not think this is unfair to larger clubs because we strive to give an equal service to large or small clubs as we have always done so in the past.”

The full Official minutes from the meeting can be found in May’s CIU Journal which is available in clubs and at ciu.org.uk

CaMra disappointed with Government response to high street rental auctions

Commenting on the publication of the Government response to the consultation on High Street Rental Auctions, CAMRA’s Pub and Club Campaigns Director, Gary Timmins said:

“Much of this is a disappointing step backwards for high street pubs.

“Campaigning to see vacant pubs brought back into use is one of CAMRA’s core objectives and the proposals for High Street Rental Auctions had the potential to be a really positive move, particularly the proposal’s focus on community uses.

We know that pubs can increase and expand footfall on the high street, and we hoped Government understood this too.

“However, it was vital that pubs kept their planning protection under the scheme. CAMRA called on Government to ensure that pubs that became part of the High Street

Rental Auction scheme weren’t gutted of their fittings ahead of bids for the premises, and this recommendation hasn’t been taken forward – leaving developers a clear path to permanently converting these venues.

“The recent Crooked House scandal has exposed just how far some are willing to go for a shot at redeveloping pubs, and that current planning protections for pubs simply aren’t fit for purpose. High Street Rental Auctions could have been a chance for Government to take a fresh approach and affirm their support for pubs. Instead, their response to this consultation is looking like yet another missed opportunity.

“I am pleased to see provision for Local Authorities to set the uses for which bids will be permitted, and that pubs are specifically given as a case where this would be appropriate. I urge the Trailblazer Authorities that will trial High Street Rental Auctions to make use of this provision, to protect high street pubs from unscrupulous redevelopment.”

Roy comes face to face with Griff in his prison cell. When Carla reveals that Bobby’s been arrested for perverting the course of justice, Dee-Dee realises with horror that Roy’s defence is up in smoke. DS Swain and Kit set about interviewing Nathan. When DS Swain reveals that the girl who provided him with an alibi for the night of Lauren’s disappearance has changed her mind, Nathan’s rattled. Ellie describes to Bethany how she had a client who showered her with gifts and became more of a boyfriend, but suddenly turned nasty and threatened to kill her. When Bethany shows her a photo of Nathan, will Ellie confirm it was him? We finally find out who killed Lauren - will life on the street get back to some sort of normality?

Emmerdale:

Worried about her ex, Leyla summons Liam to Take A Vow where she and Suzy fill in the Doc. Will Liam take stock of all he’s found out about his girlfriend lately? She’s been sleeping in her car, she didn’t want her photo taken at the village fete and she bit Mandy’s head off when she dared to ask her a question about her family. Is Ella who she says she is? What does Manpreet tell her colleague about Ella to send him into such a spin? And where does Liam rush off to… and why? Cain is worried for his son Kyle who’s being bullied. Not wanting Kyle to suffer, the mechanic dad is driven to wonder if his family should up sticks and move elsewhere. Will Moira get on board with her husband’s idea about moving?

Eastenders:

Ian makes a heartbreaking discovery. Fed up with Cindy getting away with everything, Elaine summons Ian to the pub and reveals all about George and Cindy’s kiss! After Nish’s revelation that he’s dying, the Panesars are divided over whether to let him back into the family fold even with all the terrible things he’s done in the past! Harvey has been feeling lonely and fed up of seeing him so glum, Jean insists the best way to resolve the situation is to make some new friends. Peter warns mum Cindy that unless she’s nicer to Lauren, he’s going to move out! Junior is determined to reunite his half-sisters Anna and Gina with their mum Cindy. He invites the three of them to meet him at Peggy’s but instead of making peace they’re all soon arguing!

FOOTBALLR UNDUP

YOUNG BLADES WIN THIRD LEAGUE TITLE IN FOUR YEARS

United’s Under 21s came out on top in their third

Development League National title in four years and finally lifted the trophy with a 2-0 win at Bramall Lane against Birmingham City.

An early goal from captain Owen Hampson and a header 15 minutes from time from Owen Hampson was enough on the night in a naturally tense and nervous game from both

sides at times, but it was the young Blades who prospered.

It was the perfect start for United when Louie Marsh released Sai Sachdev down the right, his pull back brilliantly chipped first time over the City goalkeeper from Hampson to make it 1-0 inside five minutes.

Hampson had an effort saved minutes later before the Blues settled into the game and caused United some issues with their

Röhl extends

Owls contract

The Owls are delighted to announce that Danny Röhl has signed an extended long-term contract with Wednesday.

The German manager masterminded a memorable route to Championship safety after joining the Owls in October of last season.

attacking play, but didn’t test Luke Faxon until the goalkeeper made a superb save to tip away a deflected effort.

While the visitors saw plenty of the ball, United remained a threat down the other end as both Aston and Marsh saw efforts saved before Hampson smashed a shot just past the post before the interval.

United were composed after the restart but were forced into a change when Evan Easton

took a heavy knock after a late tackle and was replaced by Jack Waldron.

As the game got more and more stretched as the visitors looked for a way back into the final, gaps began to open up and Waldron exploited one of them brilliantly to release Aston, but the United number nine was denied in a one vs one.

It mattered little though moments later when persistent play from Marsh kept an attack

Having steadied the ship in the months that ensued, Röhl oversaw four wins and two draws in the last six games to secure second tier survival.

The Owls ended 2023/24 in 20th place and second in the Championship form table.

Röhl has now put pen to paper on a new contract at Hillsborough ahead of the 2024/25 season. Owls chairman Dejphon Chansiri said: “I am delighted that Danny will be continuing his managerial journey with our club.

“The impact he made when he joined was immediate and was the foundation for preserving our place in the Championship.

“He has forged a special relationship with our supporters in the short space of time he has been here and now this journey continues.

“The hard work preparing for next season is already underway, it was important to secure Danny’s services on a well-deserved new contract and I am delighted this is now in place.”

Röhl said: “I am delighted to extend my contract with Sheffield Wednesday. This is a fantastic club that has taken me to heart and I feel exactly the same way.

“It was never in my mind to be anywhere else but Hillsborough. I feel at home here, the fans have been incredible, they have shown myself and my staff nothing but kindness since the first day.

“I would like to thank the chairman for giving me this opportunity and now we are excited to look forward and can plan ahead together for the new season.

“The way we finished last season was amazing, so much hard work came to fruition but we do not stop here. We must continue to show the same effort levels and desire for the future, the chairman is ambitious, I am ambitious and our fantastic supporters are ambitious too.”

alive, and it was Waldron again who picked out Aston with a pinpoint cross and Aston did the rest with a clinical header.

With the lead doubled, United began to relax but Faxon had to be at his best again to tip an effort from Junior Dixon past the post with 10 minutes to go, and despite throwing everything at the Blades late on, United held out to seal the national title.

THREE-TIME LEAGUE ONE PROMOTION-

WINNING REECE RETURNS FOR SECOND MILLERS SPELL

Rotherham United are delighted to confirm that three-time League One promotion winner Reece James will join the club upon the expiration of his contract with Sheffield Wednesday this summer, subject to EFL and FA ratification.

The 30-year-old quickly follows Jonson ClarkeHarris, Joe Rafferty and Shaun McWilliams through the entrance at AESSEAL New York Stadium as boss Steve Evans continues to push the throttle to full in his early summer recruitment drive.

James returns for a second spell with the Millers having previously worked with Evans in South Yorkshire during the fledgling stages of his career whilst on loan from Manchester United in 2014 and this time arrives on a permanent basis after agreeing a two-year contract.

The Bacup-born operator – who is a left-back by trade but also capable of playing in midfield – was schooled in the famed Manchester United Academy having spent time in the younger age groups with Preston North End and Blackburn Rovers.

James can call upon no fewer than three promotions from Sky Bet League One having most recently achieved the feat through the Play-offs whilst with Sheffield Wednesday, with that adding to winning the third tier title on two occasions whilst contracted to Wigan Athletic.

His CV also boasts time with Sunderland, Doncaster Rovers and Blackpool in a career that has seen him turn out over 200 times in the EFL, with all of those appearances at League One and Championship level.

Sbarra

ready to kick on with Rovers

Joe Sbarra is convinced Rovers is the right club to take him to the next level in his career.

The midfielder garnered a strong reputation during his four years with promotion-chasing Solihull Moors and is determined to show the best is yet to come.

And he believes Rovers will provide the ideal platform for him to continue to improve.

“I think there’s a lot more to come from me and it’s the same for the club as well,” the 25-year-old said. “Speaking to the gaffer, I’m excited by the journey that we could go on and the goals that we can achieve.

“After the few years I’ve had at Solihull, I’ve really found what sort of player I am. Before, I was mix and matching and filling in spaces but now I know what I’m good at.

“It’s probably the best thing that could have happened to me. I went in there and found myself and got to know how I am as a player and a person as well.

“It’s a massive decision at this stage of my career but the club stood out straight away as soon as I knew there was interest and I just wanted to get it done. It’s a big move for me but I’m sure it’s the right one.

“Hopefully I can provide goals and assists to the team. I’m confident I can do that.”

On what he will bring to Rovers, Sbarra said: “High energy, chipping in with goals and assists and I’m hard-working as well.

“The gaffer spoke about it when we met but the off-the-ball side is just as important and I don’t mind putting myself about and winning the ball back high up the pitch.”
