REGION COMES TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE ARMED FORCES DAY

Armed Forces and Veterans Day honours the outstanding contribution made by current members of the armed forces and by veterans of all ages. The day is an opportunity for us all to join together to pay tribute to our armed forces past, present and future.

Join the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr Jayne Dunn, veterans, forces personnel and cadets on Saturday 22 June to celebrate Armed Forces and Veterans Day.

Watch the veterans parade and ceremony, tap your toes and sing along to the Ashby Big Band as they transport us back in time with wartime classics and some dance floor favourites and see the forces display stands and find out more about cadets, the armed

forces and the armed forces covenant.

This year’s event marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day and provides a poignant opportunity to commemorate the service and sacrifice of those who lost or risked their lives and to reflect upon the human cost of conflict.

As war and conflict continue in Ukraine and the Middle East we hold onto hope for a more peaceful world and commemorate the service and sacrifice of all those who risk their lives to help keep us safe and allow us to maintain our freedom.

The Parade form up will start at 11.30am and begin at 11.55am with a Ceremony at 12 noon plus Music at 12.30pm and 2pm.

Rotherham will also come

together again to say thank you to our Armed Forces community on Saturday 22 June.

Led by the Council, in collaboration with the Armed Forces community, the Armed Forces Day event will provide an opportunity to come together and thank those who have fought for our country, as well as showing our support for those currently serving.

This year’s event, taking place in the town centre, will include a military parade, followed by a parade inspection, Act of Worship, speeches, and cadet displays. Entertainment will take place at All Saints’ Square throughout the day.

The event programme is as follows:

• Stalls on Effingham Street from 10am to 4pm

• The Armed Forces Day Parade will move off from College Street at 10.20am

The parade will be led by a marching band with military contingents, cadets and veterans

• Entertainment at All Saints’ Square from 11.25am to 4pm

In Doncaster the city will show support for the people who make up the Armed Forces community, from currently serving troops to Service families, veterans and cadets.

The parade will be at 11am and travel along Duke Street, St Sepulchre Gate, High Street, Hallgate and South Parade.

Celebrations will continue afterwards on Elmfield Park.

This year’s focus is youth with a a number of displays taking place by the Cadets from all services. This will be a family event packed full of experiences and activities and with a Military Village of demonstrations, stalls, and interactive displays.

Road Closures to deliver the parade will affect parts of the City Centre from 9am –12 noon.

On reaching the park the Parade will form up in front of the Saluting Party.

a major new summer art event at crystal Peaks shopping centre will be fundraising for the Bright Young Dreams campaign in support of The Children’s Hospital charity.

Art For All will feature specially commissioned works by more than 60 celebrities and creatives with links to South Yorkshire and beyond, including Olympic legend Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill and comedians Jon Richardson of 8 Out of 10 Cats and Paul Chuckle of The Chuckle Brothers. All of the participants will be putting their artistic

skills to great use for free with their works set to be displayed as part of a free summer exhibition in the central atrium at Crystal Peaks from July 22 to September 1.

Every canvas will also be up for grabs via an online raffle with tickets costing just £2.

Broadcaster Dan Walker, ambassador for Bright Young Dreams and a patron of The Children’s Hospital Charity is also lending his support.

“The Children’s Hospital Charity touches the lives of every family in Sheffield at some point and is one of the region’s best loved and most enthusiastically-

supported institutions,”

“It is wonderful that the Crystal Peaks team have come up with such a colourful way of supporting the work the charity does, especially as it is bringing fresh light to the important Bright Young Dreams campaign.”

The Bright Young Dreams campaign was founded by Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill in 2023 to help address the urgent global crisis in children’s mental health. It aims to raise £5 million this year to help fund a strategic action plan and infrastructure, in aid of Sheffield Children’s and The Children’s Hospital Charity.

“Crystal Peaks is a massively enthusiastic supporter of The Children’s Hospital Charity and for several years now has taken part in the annual ‘Christmas Snowflake’ campaign,” said Art For All organiser Clare Burnett.“Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is one of only three dedicated children’s hospital trusts in the UK and provides integrated healthcare for children and young people, including community and mental health care as well as acute and specialist services.

“Investment will also be dedicated to the ambition to build a new technology platform for children, parents and staff to help provide accessible education and support for those who need it.

“Crystal Peaks always sees itself as being right at the heart of the community it serves and, as such, we believe Art For All will make a really important contribution to what we hope will be a great and

colourful summer event.”

Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill added: “I am incredibly excited about the upcoming Art for All fundraiser at Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre.

“It’s wonderful to see our community come together to support such a vital cause. Thank you to everyone involved for your generous support of the Bright Young Dreams campaign, benefiting Sheffield Children’s and The Children’s Hospital Charity.

“Your efforts will make a real difference in the lives of so many children and their families. Let’s make this event a huge success!”

A Doncaster hospice has had its courtyard garden rejuvenated as part of a grant programme focused on improving the lives of local people.

St John’s Hospice in Doncaster have completed some muchneeded maintenance on a community garden on their site used for patients, visitors, staff and volunteers to have a peaceful moment. The hospice applied for several community grants to help fund the upgrades including Northern Powergrid’s social impact programme. The network operator has already invested Ј7.5 million in upgrades to the local electricity network around Doncaster, so when the opportunity to enhance the communities further through the redevelopment of the community garden, Northern Powergrid were happy to help. The redevelopment project received £10,000 of grant funding from Northern Powergrid alongside significant investments from Lloyds Bank and Next.

In a small ceremony on Friday (31 May 2024), those who had provided support and investment for the project gathered to see the finished garden and celebrate those who have worked hard to make it a reality.

Northern Powergrid were represented at the ceremony by Customer Service Manager Kara Chapman, who thanked those involved in making such a significant difference

to the lives of those patients receiving care at St John’s Hospice.

She said “The work we completed in and around Doncaster to improve the resilience of the vital local electricity network involved replacing over eight kilometres of overhead power lines.

That’s why I think it’s quite fitting that the social impact programme supported the rejuvenation of a community garden that can be so critical to everyone who spends time at St John’s Hospice. Northern Powergrid work hard to ensure that when we complete significant works, we are leaving the community and environment in a better place than when we found it. Having the opportunity to attend the opening event was a great way to say thank you to the local community for their patience during the work last summer. Everyone at Northern Powergrid is proud of the work that the social impact programme is benefitting the customers and communities we serve.

St John’s Hospice Fundraising Manager said: “We are extremely grateful to Northern Powergrid for this generous donation.

The Courtyard Garden is at the heart of our hospice, which makes it completely accessible for all of our patients, visitors, staff and volunteers, and now offers a beautiful space for quiet reflection, while enjoying the scenery and wildlife it already attracts.”

A Deaf-owned and Deaf-led organisation is partnering with the Council to enhance the organisation’s translation and interpretation services.

SignLive has transformed the lives of Deaf people and provides them with more independence. They have a pool of over 118 fully qualified and accredited interpreters, they are trained in antifraud and safe-guarding measures, and our community will be able to access this service 24/7. The organisation has a great reputation amongst Sheffield’s Deaf community, who are already familiar with using the SignLive app when accessing other key Sheffield services, such as the NHS. Users will be able to call the Council for free, following a one-time registration on the SignLive app, where they will be able to access the service. Through this partnership, the Council is now implementing a new video relay service and a new video interpreting service, which is supported by SignLive. This new functionality improves the experience of our Deaf citizens and those with a hearing impairmentsupporting them with a live, on-demand British Sign Language (BSL) qualified interpreter when contacting the Council.

Cllr Tom Hunt said: “The launch of SignLive is a brilliant step in making our services more accessible to everyone in our communities. We are paving the way to make sure everyone has the support they need when contacting us. Introducing this functionality will make make our services more accessible to our deaf community.”

Fiona Mackay of SignLive, said: “We are thrilled to partner with Sheffield City Council to enhance accessibility for the Deaf community. This collaboration signifies a major step towards inclusive communication,

ensuring that Deaf individuals can easily access essential services and support. We look forward to working together to break down barriers and create a more inclusive environment for all residents.”

Paul Ntulila of Disability Sheffield, said: “I am delighted to see that Sheffield Council have registered with SignLive, the remote sign language interpreting service for deaf people. It is an amazing service and I simply couldn’t do my job with out them. It is hard to imagine how hard things were before they came along, the barriers that deaf faced were insurmountable. For the deaf residents of Sheffield being able to access council services at last is very significant.”

Steph Lotz, Director of Customer Success at SignLive, said: “In my role, we’ve seen so many brilliant success stories from users of this service. One of these includes a Deaf lady who was pregnant and unable to book a BSL interpreter at the last minute, however, she could access the SignLive app on her phone and was able to use this while in labour to communicate with the GP and midwife. As a user of SignLive myself, this service has profoundly changed my life, making me feel significantly more independent and secure having instant access to a BSL interpreter in my pocket 24/7. This service not only enhances my personal life but also enables me to perform my job effectively, without any barriers, making me feel more integrated into mainstream society. It is brilliant to see this service being brought into Sheffield City Council, If users would like to access the service in person it is now available to access at First Point, Howden House, 1 Union Street, Sheffield S1 2SH. They are also plans to create more face-to-face access points in the future.

At the end of Child Safety Week 2024 (3–9 June), NICEIC, the UK’s leading certification body for the electrical industry, is taking the opportunity to remind families to prioritise electrical safety in their homes.

The theme which was run by Child Accident Prevention Trust, is ‘Safety. Sorted!’ This provides an opportunity to remind homeowners of the importance of using a qualified and competent business to complete electrical work in the home.

Tips for parents and guardians to keep their children safe around electricity.

• Teach children about the dangers of electricity Parents are advised to explain that electricity can cause serious injuries.

• Avoid using damaged electrical equipment Parents should avoid using any electrical equipment that has frayed or damaged cords.

• Keep electrical cords out of reach Electrical cords and leads should be kept out of reach of children.

• Avoid overloading sockets

wEEk advICE

Only use one extension lead per socket-outlet to avoid overloading outlets. An extension lead should never be plugged into another extension lead, if more outlets are required consider having additional socket-outlets installed.

• Inspect regularly

Homeowners are advised to regularly check electrical cords, light switches, plugs and socket-outlets for damage and have any faulty items repaired by a NICEIC-certified business. Homeowners can find NICEIC-certified businesses through the ‘Find a trusted NICEIC tradesperson’ tool. NICEIC Technical Director, Paul Collins, said: “By working together, we can ensure safer environments both inside and outside of the home for children, minimising the risk of accidents occurring. We recommend that any form of electrical work should be managed by a qualified, certified professional business, such as those listed with NICEIC. Child Safety Week is a timely reminder of the importance of electrical safety education and there are simple measures that can be put place to ensure that families stay safe.”

Fires involving e-bikes and e-scooters are a growing risk for South Yorkshire, as 15 fires involving lithium ion batteries were recorded in 2023, almost double the number that occurred in 2022.

As e-bikes and e-scooters become more popular, it is likely that the number of fires caused by the lithium ion batteries will increase.

Following another fire in Sheffield at the end of April, we want to take this opportunity to share the following advice from South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue:

• Never block your escape route with anything, including e-bikes and e-scooters. Store them somewhere away from a main through route. Our advice is to store these items in a safe external location if possible, such as a garage or a shed.

• Always use the correct charger, otherwise the risk of fire increases, and buy an official one from a reputable seller.

• Do not attempt to modify or tamper with your battery. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

• Converting pedal bikes into e-bikes using DIY kits bought online can be very dangerous. They can pose

a higher risk of fire. Get a professional or competent person to carry out the conversion and make sure to buy a battery from a reputable seller and that it is not second-hand.

• Check your battery and charger meets UK safety standards. We have particular concern where batteries have been purchased from online marketplaces and when they’ve been sourced on the internet, which may not meet the correct safety standards. Consumers buying any product can check that the item displays a UKCA or CE mark that ensures that the products meet UK and EU safety, health or environmental requirements. If buying online, buy from a UK supplier.

• Watch out for signs that the battery or charger are not working as they should, e.g. if the battery is hot to the touch or has changed shape.

This advice and further details about the recent incident can be found at the official website - www. syfire.gov.uk

CAMRA uRges foR pub suppoRt in

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) is making its mark in the 2024 General Election by announcing its Manifesto and e-lobby campaign. As one of the UK’s most successful campaigning organisations, CAMRA is calling on its members up and down the country to lobby candidates in every constituency to make sure MPs elected in this election are committed to protecting and promoting thriving community pubs and great beer and cider.

CAMRA’s Election Manifesto outlines six key campaigning priorities, these are:

• Fair tax for beer and pubs.

• More rights for beer drinkers and pub goers.

• Access to market for small and independent breweries and cider producers.

• Recognising traditional cask ale under UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

• Better planning protections for pubs. [England-only]

• Change the business rates system to make it fairer for pubs. [England-only]

Election campaigns are a prime opportunity for politicians to be seen pulling a pint behind the bar of their local, but this doesn’t always translate into action that

supports pubs, social clubs, brewers, cider makers, and consumers.

CAMRA is asking for candidates to commit to the campaigning priorities outlined in its Manifesto, and back policy and legislation that can truly help the pub trade, brewers and consumers. To ensure that prospective MPs are pledging their support, CAMRA is enlisting its thousands of members to contact their local candidates to ask for their support for beer and pubs if elected. CAMRA is also providing a campaign pack for members and pub goers to promote the manifesto and e-lobby,

including election guidance and social media assets. As well as this, CAMRA will be providing resources for parliamentary candidates to pledge their support for beer, pubs and CAMRA’s key campaigning asks. As each party announces its manifesto, CAMRA will be commenting on them to let consumers know what is being offered to them.

For more information on CAMRA’s Manifesto, as well as other resources and campaigning efforts, go to camra.org.uk/take-action/ general-election-2024/

I’VE mAdE A LIFETImE OF mEmORIES SO FAR - PALmER

After agreeing a new Owls deal last week, Liam Palmer is keen to build on our impressive endof-season form and continue his climb in the club’s history books. The defender has amassed 435 Wednesday appearances, ranking him eighth in the club’s all-time list, and was pleased to have his contract confirmed so soon after the previous campaign and its dramatic conclusion.

Palmer said: “I’m really happy to get things tied up and I’m looking forward to getting back to working and seeing what we can do.

“I’m enjoying family time and being able to take the kids to more places, but other than that I’ve been quite busy really!

“I had the Edinburgh Marathon and the charity run after the season, it’s nice to have everything tied up and go and enjoy some time away on holiday and recharge.

mILLERS PRE-SEASON CAmPAIGN

Ticket details have been confirmed for Rotherham United’s opening pre-season friendly fixture with Parkgate.

Steve Evans’ side will visit the Steelmen on Friday 5th July, for a 7pm kick off at Roundwood Sports Complex.

As has been the case in previous years, tickets will be sold online by our friends from Parkgate, with 1,000 set to be made available for the fixture. Tickets will go on sale at 10am on Saturday 22nd June and priced at £10 for adults and £8 for concessions (65+/U16s). Tickets bought online will include a booking fee.

Please be aware that tickets can only be bought online and there will be no tickets available to buy through Rotherham United or at the Red and White Shop.

Rotherham United will continue preparations for

“I had a chat with the manager at the end of the season about getting something done quickly. I think most players who spoke to him wanted him to stay as well.

“When I spoke to him after the last game, he was keen to have a strong core in the group and that’s music to my ears with the role I’ve adopted in the last few years, as one of the experienced players who can help the younger players.

“On the pitch I’m

always keen to impress, but being off it is just as key, especially when you’re putting a new squad together.

“We want to carry on from where we left.”

With the 2023/24 season behind Wednesday, Palmer wants to build on the momentum gained in our final six games, during which the Owls were unbeaten.

The Scotland international played in each of those half-adozen matches and hopes to be competing

their upcoming Sky Bet League One campaign with a trip to Southern League side Spalding United.

Nicknamed the Tulips, the Lincolnshire-based outfit clinched the Northern Premier Midlands Division title last term, with the Millers set to make the trip to Sir Halley Stewart Field on Saturday 20th July for a 3pm kick off.

The Millers are close to finalising another fixture on the same weekend, with boss Steve Evans set to split his squad across the two games, details of which – alongside ticket details for the visit to Spalding - will be confirmed on www.themillers. co.uk in due course.

at the other end of the table next time out.

He added: “Last season was a minor miracle, given the position we found ourselves in and to finish the season so strongly.

“We’ve shown that we can compete and be a match for teams, so with a few additions and the manager having a full pre-season, there’s no reason why we can’t aim higher up the table.

“We know we have different weapons in our arsenal to turn games around and deal

with different situations.

“We want to hit the ground running, we’ve seen what a bad start can do, so we want to be one of the teams starting well in those first six games to build a solid foundation.

“I missed a chunk of pre-season last summer, so I’m keen to hit the ground running, being fit and ready to go.”

Palmer’s status as a fans’ favourite continues to grow, with the S6 stalwart entering his 16th season as a first

ROVERS LAUNCH NEW HOmE KIT

Rovers and Oxen are proud to unveil their new official home kit for the 2024/25 season.

The shirt sports our traditional red and white hoops with a black trim on the front while the rear is a full red panel - aiding the clear reading of player names and numbers on a matchday. Shirts will be accompanied by black shorts with red and white flashes on the reverse, plus red and white hooped socks.

The shirt is made from lightweight performance fabric with moisture wick technology to keep you cool and dry, even when the going gets tough, and features a dropped tail design for a more comfortable fit.

The Rovers badge features in a stand-out woven style while the OXEN branding is tastefully understated.

Diamond partner Eco-Power Group feature on the front of shirt, while platinum partners Stoneacre appear on the back below the collar.

Adult shirts are priced at £48 with juniors at £37 and toddlers at £36. A wide range of sizes will be available in-store and online.

The kit is available to purchase from www. eliteprosports.co.uk/doncaster-rovers

Alternatively, visit the Club Store at the Eco-Power Stadium - which will be open from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

team player.

The two-time Owls Player of the Year is grateful for the support he receives, and says his new contract is a statement of commitment to pay that back.

He added: “I’m so thankful for the strong connection with the fans, with time it’s built so strongly.

“With me and Baz signing, it shows our intent. I was keen to sign early and show that I’m ready to go.

“Over the last few

seasons, I’ve averaged around 40 games each year. Hopefully I can get closer to fifth spot in the all-time rankings, and then who knows after that.

“Your longer term goals change all the time, but obviously it’s in the back of my mind. It ties in nicely with wanting to play as often as possible and hopefully I can have a good preseason and start well.

“I’ve made a lifetime of memories so far and I don’t want that to stop anytime soon.”

BLAdES PREPARE WITH PRE-SEASON mATCHES

The kick-off time of United’s first friendly of pre-season against York City has been brought forward.

The trip to the LNER Community Stadium on Saturday 13th July, is now scheduled for a 12.30pm start , rather than the previously advertised 3pm.

The decision has been made to ensure rail services don’t become overcrowded, alongside wider travel to and from the city, as a result of York hosting a horse racing meeting on the same afternoon.

As part of preparations for the 2024/25 season, United can confirm dates for four pre-season friendlies in July.

The Blades will face National League opposition when Chris Wilder’s side travel to York City’s LNER Community Stadium on Saturday 13th July, kickoff 12:30pm.

United then make the short trip to face newly promoted League Two side Chesterfield on Saturday 20th July for a 3pm kick-off at the SMH Group Stadium.

On Tuesday 23rd July, kick-off 7pm, the Blades face more League Two opposition with United taking on Harrogate Town at the EnviroVent Stadium.

The month is then rounded off with a South Yorkshire derby against Rotherham United on Saturday 27th July, kick-off 3pm at the AESSEL New York Stadium.

Ticket details for all of the above games are to be confirmed at a later date.

Please note, the above fixtures are subject to change whilst additional matches may be added to schedule.
