A MANIFESTO FOR gRASS ROOTS MUSIC

Music Venue Trust (MVT) has called upon politicians from all parties to “seize the moment” ahead of the forthcoming UK General Election on July 4th, and to help save the sector from the deepening crisis it finds itself in.

MVT has published a report entitled, ‘A Manifesto for Grassroots Music’, which sets out the steps that need to be taken in order to stem the closures of GMVs, currently running at more than one per week, and to bring stability to the sector.

Calling this “a once in a generation opportunity to save the UK’s Grassroots Music Venues”, the report emphasises the need to implement the recent Culture Media &

Sport Select Committee recommendations for the wider live music industry to invest in the future of grassroots music via a contribution of £1 from every arena and stadium ticket sold for events over a 5000 capacity.

There are also calls for the abolition of VAT on GMV tickets and for a review of the business rates paid by venues in the sector.

The report also highlights the need for a full, fan led review and the need for changes to existing planning laws.

The five key areas highlighted in the report are:

• £1 grassroots investment contribution from every arena and stadium ticket sold to support Grassroots

Music Venues, artists and promoters

• A fan-led review to fully examine the long-term challenges to the live music ecosystem

• The agent of change principle in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) to be put on a statutory footing at the earliest opportunity

• A reduction in VAT on cultural ticketing in GMVs to 0% and reduce VAT on cultural ticketing in the live music industry to the European average (5–7%)

• The creation of a specific business rates premises definition for GMVs and the removal of properties satisfying that definition from the requirement to pay business rates

“The Manifesto is being delivered to every prospective MP in the country with the request that they come out in support of it as part of their campaign to be elected.

Music communities across the country will also be asking the candidates where they stand on the future of live music in our towns and cities. The time to act is now.”

In its recent report recommending the

implementation of a £1 levy on arena and stadium concert tickets, the CMS select committee said, “…grassroots live music venues, the local, limited capacity venues integral to the pipeline of creative and professional talent and key fixtures of our communities, are now facing a crisis of soaring costs and closures. Artists, and the people who rely on them for business, are facing a cost-oftouring crisis and finding opportunities squeezed. Promoters are less able to put on shows or make them financially viable. Festivals, electronic music venues and even academies and arenas are not insulated from the impacts.”

CHaRITY’s pINk IT Up wEEk

Yorkshire children’s cancer charity Candlelighters has celebrated the return of its largest annual fundraiser, ‘Pink It Up’ week. Every year Candlelighters urges the community to get involved in pink themed fundraising activities to support children and families affected by childhood cancer. ‘Pink It Up’ is the charity’s flagship campaign. Since 2019 Candlelighters have encouraged people across Yorkshire to help them paint the county pink through various, pink-themed fundraising activities and challenges to raise funds and awareness. This year’s week-long fundraising event saw businesses, schools and communities across Yorkshire throwing their all into pink themed fundraising to raise money for children with cancer. From bake sales, parties and crafting activities to fancy dress competitions and window display decorating, the people of Yorkshire came together to show their solidarity for children with cancer.

The Candlelighters Family Support Team who work at the Children’s Hospital hosted a range of pink-themed events on the oncology wards to bring the pink fun to the children and parents. Children were able to get involved in activities such as pie splatting the Family Support Workers, and staff dressed up in pyjamas and fancy dress, with special treats such as pink marshmallow and fruit kebabs available for the children to snack on.

Amy Laycock, Family Support Worker at Candlelighters said “The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in all the Pink It Up fun on the wards and day unit. Making sure there’s lots of fun and distractions in the hospital is an important

part of our role, and Pink It Up is a particularly special week for us. I think the children’s favourite activity was definitely splatting us in the face with cream pies, I lost count of the number of pies thrown in my face but hearing their laughter was absolutely worth every minute of it!”

Around 150 children in Yorkshire are diagnosed with cancer each year.

Since its inception in 1976, Candlelighters has been committed to offering extensive emotional, practical, and financial support to affected families and facilitating research to better the lives and outcomes of children facing diagnosis and treatment.

Tom Robertshaw of Candlelighters said “We are humbled that families and so many other people across the county come together to raise money to support children with cancer. Taking part in fundraising like Pink It Up is crucial in allowing Candlelighters to continue to support families during and beyond treatment, to ensure they never feel alone and know that there is a support network around them. I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has taken part in Pink it Up this year.”

• Established in 1976, Candlelighters is a children’s charity dedicated to supporting children and their families across Yorkshire who are impacted by childhood cancer.

• The charity supports children and families from all over Yorkshire.

• Each year, in Yorkshire alone, over 150 children are diagnosed with some form of cancer. The charity offers family support in many forms, from practical financial support for families and funded holidays, to talking therapies, wellbeing treatments and support groups for siblings.

As summer approaches, many will be looking forward to enjoying the warm weather and outdoor activities. However, for those trying to quit smoking, summer can be a time of great temptation, and many can find themselves slipping back into old habits. To help combat this, experts have shared their top strategies to avoid the temptation to smoke this summer. Whether it’s going for a summer walk or indulging in healthy snacks, these tips aim to support individuals on their journey to a smoke-free life. For those looking to improve their health and boost their energy levels this summer, quitting smoking is a great first step to living a healthier life. Quitting smoking also has several health benefits that are sure to improve the quality of your summer. Notably, smoking is known to exacerbate hay fever symptoms, so quitting could be the key to becoming symptom-free. If you’re finding it challenging to quit smoking, exploring alternative smoking cessation methods like vaping could also be beneficial. Vaping delivers nicotine without many of the harmful toxins found in cigarettes and mimics the act of smoking, easing withdrawal symptoms. Alternatively, nicotine replacement therapies such as patches or gum can help reduce cravings, supporting your commitment to becoming smoke-free. Top five tips to avoid smoking temptation this summer:

1. Indulge in delicious summer fruits

Healthy snacks are a great tool in managing smoking temptations. Replacing cigarettes with nutritious summer fruits like apples, strawberries, and blueberries can help keep your mouth busy and distract you from reaching for a cigarette. Summer fruits are delicious, but other foods can also be useful in combatting the urge to smoke - vegetable sticks such as carrots, celery, and cucumbers are great to chew on when the urge strikes. Moreover, research indicates that individuals who consume more fruits and vegetables are more likely to remain smoke-free.

2. Enjoy a cool glass of iced green tea Green tea is renowned for its numerous health benefits, including aiding in smoking cessation. The antioxidants and amino acids in green tea help

diminish the urge to smoke and can even repair tissues that have been damaged by smoking.

3. Stay active with summer walks Exercise is a powerful tool in reducing the temptation to reach for a cigarette. Engaging in regular physical activity not only distracts the mind but also strengthens the body, making it more resistant to cravings. One study found that the negative effects of nicotine withdrawal symptoms rapidly decreased during exercise and remained reduced for up to 50 minutes after. Summer walks, hikes, runs, and other outdoor activities can act as the perfect distraction and replace the habit of smoking with healthier alternatives. What’s more, exercise can be a great motivator to stay off smoking because your new-found fitness will give you a reason to want to stay smoke-free.

4. Practice meditation and stress-relieving activities Activities such as yoga in the park or tai chi in the sun are perfect summer activities to promote relaxation and mental well-being. Incorporating meditation into your daily routine is a great way to maintain the calm and focused mind needed to quit cigarettes. Meditative breathing exercises can also significantly reduce stress, enhance mindfulness, and improve self-control - which are all crucial factors in overcoming cravings.

5. Avoid situations or social groups that encourage bad habits Avoiding situations with smoking triggers can be crucial, especially in the early stages of quitting. What’s more, alcohol can significantly increase the likelihood of smoking by lowering inhibitions and acting as a social trigger. Therefore, choosing alcohol-free alternatives can be a simple way to help reduce the temptation to relapse. Additionally, socialising with smokers increases the chances of smoking temptationsresearch indicates that it is most tempting to smoke when around those that are smoking, especially if they offer to share a cigarette with you. Because of these factors, communicating with friends and family to gain their support in your smoke-free journey is crucial. By doing so, your support network will know to help you quit rather than accidentally tempt you back into old habits.

On Saturday 22nd June, three incredible fundraisers from Sheffield took on the epic challenge of walking from Sheffield train station to Manchester Piccadilly station to raise money for the Snowdrop Project, a Sheffield-based charity which supports and empowers survivors of modern slavery and exploitation in South Yorkshire.

On Saturday 22nd June, Kathryn, Alicia and Zoe walked from Sheffield train station to Manchester Piccadilly station, totalling 40 miles. They set off at 3am and faced an 18-hour trek to reach Manchester Piccadilly by 9pm, in order to make that last train home! Walking out of Sheffield, they travelled through villages such as Hathersage, Hope, Chinley and Castleton, before reaching Chapel-on-leFrith and ploughing on through Stockport, then into Manchester city centre.

The girls said “We’re doing this to raise awareness of the Snowdrop Project, and to raise funds for the vital work that they do within our local communities. Snowdrop exists to ensure that no survivor of modern slavery or exploitation has to rebuild their life alone. They’re a Sheffield-based charity which empowers survivors of modern

slavery to live lives free from their pasts. At the end of the day, we know that, even though this will be a tough challenge both mentally and physically, it will be incomparable to the experiences of survivors of modern slavery. In just six weeks’ time, the three of us will also be venturing to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in order to raise funds for this local charity.”

Asked about the hardest part of the walk, they said “Walking 40 miles in less than 24 hours will be tough going! So many friends have asked if we’re camping overnight - we’re not! We’re determined to achieve this within the 18-hour time limit, and in time to get that last train back home to Sheffield! There’s also a degree of unpredictability, because we don’t know what the weather is going to be like and whether the trains are going to be running on time (or at all!). We’ll also need to carry all of our snacks, water, first aid kit etc., so we’ll have to think on our feet for solutions when problems come up. We’re focusing on fundraising for Snowdrop, which is what led us to this crazy idea, and you can donate at https:// givestar.io/gs/sheffield-tomanchester-piccadilly-trek--one-day-40-miles. “

MINING aT wENT wORTH

It is known worldwide as the Black Diamonds house built on coal. And while it’s true that a seam runs beneath Wentworth Woodhouse, Rotherham’s Grade I listed architectural masterpiece was actually built BEFORE the black stuff reaped gold for its noble owners. The saying has now been debunked by a team of local history buffs responsible for the first exhibition exploring the mansion’s 200 year coalmining history.

Wentworth’s Coal Story, which launches on July 9 and runs until October 6, explains how the fossil fuel industry affected the mansion’s rise and fall, with all information painstakingly collated by 15 of Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust’s team of research volunteers. Staged in two of the mansion’s ground floor rooms, Wentworth’s Coal Story explores the stories of the men who worked underground on estate land and their relationships with their aristocratic employers. One of the researchers, former teacher Joan Jones, commented: “We have been totally absorbed in the house’s mining history for months and found out many interesting things. What stood out for me was

the fact that, when the First Marquess of Rockingham began building Wentworth Woodhouse in 1724, he had only one mine. It had opened in 1723 and employed just a handful of men. It certainly didn’t fund his architectural ambitions. Income from his vast estates paid for that. At the end of the 18th century the entrepreneurial 4th Earl Fitwilliam inherited just as mining techniques and transportation were improving and by the mid 1800s, his income from the mines rocketed.” At the heart of the exhibition is a fascinating collection of cherished memorabilia and old photographs loaned by local people after an appeal from the Trust. Over 30 exhibits will include a pair of rabbit skin gloves hand-made by a miner, a Fitzwilliam Medal presented by Countess Maud Fitzwilliam in 1904 to a collier who displayed great kindness to a pit pony, numerous commemorative plates, miners’ lamps, photographs and never-before displayed items from Wentworth Woodhouse’s archive. The exhibition will also feature a specially-written song called The Pony’s Tale and a short film about how coal is made.

YAN VALERY jOINS ThE OwLS!

Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of Yan Valery from French side Angers SCO for an undisclosed fee.

The Tunisia international now reunites with Owls manager Danny Röhl, with the pair having previously worked together during their time at Southampton. The 25-year-old made his first steps into senior football at St Mary’s. Having come through the Saints academy, Valery made his Premier League debut at 19 years

of age in a 2-2 home draw with Manchester United in December 2018.

The former French youth international made 23 top flight appearances during his breakthrough 2018/19 season.

His form for the Saints prompted a contract extension at St Mary’s in March 2019 and the youngster went on to post a further 12 appearances for Southampton the following term.

In total, Valery made 43 Premier League

BILLY ShARP REjOINS ROVERS

Rovers are delighted to confirm they have secured the return of Billy Sharp to the club on a one-year deal.

The striker - who became Rovers’ record signing in 2010 after a loan move from Sheffield United was made permanent - netted 45 goals in 102 appearances during his previous spells in DN4. He returns to Rovers after a decade elsewhere with a record of 272 goals in 716 appearances.

“I had some great memories here,” the 38-year-old said. “This is a club where I scored some good goals and I had some tough times as well, but they were there for me as a club. It has a special place in my heart. It’s another challenge for me that suited me at this stage of my career. I know I’m 38 but age is just a number and I still feel really fit and strong. I feel I can still score goals at this level. I want to be successful personally but as a group as well and try to get the club back into the division where I started with them.

appearances for the Saints and 53 in all competitions, as well as featuring seven times in the Championship for Birmingham during a short loan spell in 2021.

Valery made the switch to Ligue 1 side Angers SCO in September 2022.

Following relegation to the second tier, the club bounced back at the first attempt last season and finished second in Ligue 2 to secure automatic promotion.

Valery made 65 appearances for the French club in total

and now makes the permanent switch back to the UK to work under Röhl once again.

A versatile and attackminded performer,

Valery can operate on the right side of defence or further forward in midfield and becomes the Owls third signing of the summer window.

“It’s going to take some hard work and togetherness from the group but I want to be a part of that to try to get there and hopefully I can hit the ground running.

Rovers manager Grant McCann said: “We’re delighted to get this done. We’ve been speaking with Billy and his representative for a few weeks.

“I think it was important for us to bring more firepower to the team and Billy will certainly do that. He’s had a tremendous career.

“I know he’s loved at Doncaster and the fans love him so I’m really pleased to bring him back here.”

Sharp first joined Rovers in 2009 on a season-long loan from boyhood club the Blades and became a hugely popular figure as he netted 15 goals in 33 appearances as they secured their highest league finish of the last 70 years.

It sparked a deal in excess of £1.1m for Sharp to move on a permanent basis and he went on net 16 goals in the following campaign before being sold to Southampton after scoring ten goals in the first half of the 11/12 season.

He helped the Saints seal promotion to the Premier League and after loan moves to Nottingham Forest and Reading, he spent the second half of the 13/14 season back with Rovers as we agonisingly missed out on Championship survival on the final day.

Sharp joined Leeds United before returning to Sheffield United in 2015 and captaining the Blades to promotions to the Championship and Premier League. During that spell, he became the EFL’s top scorer since the turn of the century.

After departing United in the summer of 2023, he joined LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer before spending the latter half of last season with Hull City in the Championship.

Sharp becomes Rovers’ seventh signing of the summer following the arrivals of Joe Sbarra, Jordan Gibson, Harry Clifton, Tom Nixon, Ephraim Yeboah and Ted Sharman-Lowe.

DAwSON jOINS MILLERS TO BOLSTER GOALKEEPING RANKS

Rotherham United are delighted to confirm the permanent signing of goalkeeper Cameron Dawson, who joins the Millers on a two-year deal subject to EFL and FA ratification.

The Sheffield-born stopper’s arrival bolsters Steve Evans’ goalkeeping ranks as he comes in to compete with Dillon Phillips for the number one jersey prior to the club’s return to pre-season training this week.

The Millers become the 28-year-old’s second permanent club, having been schooled in the Academy at Middlewood before turning professional for the Owls in 2013. Dawson can call upon loan experience with a number of clubs, most recently with Exeter City who he represented between 2021 and 2022.

He has amassed 200 professional appearances since making his senior debut in 2016 and has enjoyed promotion on two occasions – once with Exeter City from Sky Bet League Two and again with Sheffield Wednesday when the won the Sky Bet League One Play-offs in 2023.

Millers boss Steve Evans said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to secure the signature of young Cameron.

“He’s a player that I’ve watched play for Sheffield Wednesday on many occasions and is a player that has turned in some magnificent displays during that time.“

“He had options to stay at Hillsborough and others elsewhere in the Championship and a multitude of options in League One, so to get him to AESSEAL New York Stadium is a great acquisition.”

“Cam comes in to add real competition with Dillon Phillips in the goalkeeping department where I believe we’re looking really strong now.”

RIP DAVE CAPPER

Sheffield United is deeply saddened after hearing of the passing of Dave Capper.

Dave will be a familiar face to many following his decade long stint as United’s club secretary between 1989 and 1999, and has been a regular visitor to Bramall Lane since, often attending games in the Tony Currie Suite.

Dave joined the Blades in the January of ‘89 at a time when the club was flourishing again with Dave Bassett leading United to back-to-back promotions into the old First Division.

He was a key figure behind the scenes during this unprecedented period of success, and he was a leader in the introduction of Family Enclosures, amongst many other initiatives.

He left the club in June 1999 to take up a position at Hull City but over the years since his departure he stayed in touch, attending games as recently as last season.

Blades ambassador Tony Currie extended this tribute to his long-time friend. He said: “Dave joined the club at a similar time to when I returned in the late ‘80s. We worked alongside each other for many years, and we got to know each other really well.

“He split his time between the UK and Spain, and I would often go over there to take part in his golf days which were always fundraisers for charity. He was just a lovely man, and he’s someone I’ll miss dearly. RIP mate.”

Everyone at Sheffield United would like to send our thoughts to Dave’s family and friends at this time.
