The creation of a world-class children’s health research and technology centre at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park could move a step closer to becoming reality if Sheffield City Council approve an agreement for a lease of the proposed Council owned site. Members of the Finance Policy Committee are due to vote on the recommendation of an agreement between the Council and Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust so land at the park can be transformed into the National Centre for Child Health

Technology (NCCHT). Should the agreement for a lease be approved by members of the committee, the new centre will help create a healthier future for children and young people through innovation, technology and outstanding care. It will have all the dedicated spaces and facilities needed to design, create and test new child health technologies. This will include a stateof-the-art gait and motion laboratory including a Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN), and a Creative Manufacturing Zone with 3D printing,

robotics, laser cutting and other technology tools to develop prototypes. There will also be an Intelligent Home and Intelligent Ward which will create simulated real-life environments for testing technologies.

Cllr Zahira Naz, chair of the Finance Policy Committee, said: “This is a crucial step in the process of bringing the National Centre for Child Health Technology to life.

Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is one of three dedicated children’s hospital trusts in the UK and this National Centre will take their work to the next level.

“The new Centre also forms a crucial part of our regeneration of Attercliffe, alongside the Waterside project which will see around 1,000 new homes built, and the transformation of the former Adelphi Cinema and it builds on the success we’ve already seen at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park.” Sheffield City Council successfully applied for £9million from the Government’s Local Government Fund to help Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust with the project with a further £6million grant coming from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority

and £2million from The Children’s Hospital Charity.

John Williams, Deputy Chief Executive of Sheffield Children’s, said: “It’s great to be working in partnership with the Council on this inspiring project that will help create a healthier future for children and young people locally, regionally and nationally. The Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park is a really unique space that we hope will be a fantastic home to progress innovation and technology in children’s healthcare.”

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard has announced a new 250km bike route, South Yorkshire by Bike, designed to encourage communities to get involved in the fun and freedom of cycling.

Part of South Yorkshire’s ‘Summer of Cycling’, the new route will visit every corner of South Yorkshire, highlighting heritage and cultural sites. It will have easy to manage sections that are family friendly and fun to complete. Triple Olympic champion Ed Clancy, South Yorkshire’s Active Travel Commissioner, and Emily Chappell, cycling hero and campaigner who designed the route, will be riding the 250km circuit over three days this weekend and the route will be published after this ride. Ed Clancy will be using one of South Yorkshire’s 130 new e-bikes, funded by Active Travel England, which will extend the existing free e-bike loan scheme across the county. Mayor Coppard and Active Travel Commissioner, Ed Clancy, revealed the plans before opening the Sheffield Grand Prix with a family friendly ‘Rock Up & Ride’ circuit at 5pm, 17 July, ahead of the main elite cycle race.

The Mayor said: “This is a cycling summer in South Yorkshire. We have elite cyclists and enthusiastic amateurs taking part in the Sheffield Grand Prix and Rock Up and Ride, and the Tour of Britain is arriving in September. We’re extending our e-bike loan scheme to every local authority and we’re building more and better infrastructure to make cycling easier and safer. And to further celebrate and promote what we have to offer, we are now developing South Yorkshire by Bike; a new 250km route taking in every corner of South Yorkshire, showing off the best of our landscapes, our landmarks and our communities.”

Half a million pounds has been allocated to help South Yorkshire become a national leader in its e-bikes offer to residents. Over 130 new e-bikes will provide free e-cycle loan schemes across the community.

They will extend South Yorkshire’s e-bike fleet to over 200, making it one of the biggest in the country. Ed Clancy, South Yorkshire’s Active Travel Commissioner, said: “A big part of my mission to help people to walk, wheel or

cycle more is providing the skills, confidence and the right environment to give it a go. That includes more e-bike loans, bike training and repairs in the community, and building new cycle lanes. It’s also about getting more people excited about the fun and freedom of cycling by showcasing the best South Yorkshire has to offer. That ranges from the Year of Active Travel and familyfriendly South Yorkshire by Bike routes, through to hosting well-established events that communities can get involved in, like the Sheffield Grand Prix and Tour of Britain. On my South Yorkshire by Bike ride I’ll be visiting some of the best places for short, easy bike rides, taking in industrial heritage, cultural attractions and green spaces. I’ll also be meeting the brilliant people and volunteers, who work tirelessly helping people get walking, wheeling and cycling more in our communities, along the way. It’s gearing up to be an exciting summer of cycling in South Yorkshire and I hope it will help people to get involved and get out on a bike too.”

The South Yorkshire by Bike route will be released following their ride at www.southyorkshire-ca. gov.uk/sybb, highlighting family friendly, short and easy routes right across the region.

Following the Sheffield Grand Prix and South Yorkshire by Bike, the ‘Summer of Cycling’ continues with the Tour of Britain in September. Stage 3 will take place across South Yorkshire, starting in Sheffield and ending in Barnsley. South Yorkshire by Bike is a new 250km route visiting every corner of South Yorkshire highlighting heritage and cultural sites, green spaces and waterways, and the new safe cycling routes being built to help people get on bikes. SYMCA is one of only a handful of authorities in England to receive ATE funding that will deploy over 130 e-bikes, e-cargo and pandisability trikes to bike hubs across the region’s local authorities, allowing more people to loan e-bikes for free as well as improve their cycling skills.

Summer has finally arrived and here at the Royal National Institute for Blind People (RNIB), we’re delighted to say it’s time to launch our fantastic library events for children as part of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. Developed by The Reading Agency, the annual Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged four to 11 to sign up at their local library or online at summerreadingchallenge. org.uk. They’ll set a reading goal and collect rewards for their reading – including a certificate when they reach their Challenge goal. The theme of this year’s challenge is Marvellous Makers.

RNIB is encouraging local libraries to run events which will get children making and thinking creatively about stories and books. The aim is to encourage more children with vision impairments to join the Summer Reading Challenge and to help sighted children develop an understanding of sight loss. You can find details for the events on the Summer Reading Challenge website in the ‘Library Zone’. Activities include making a pair of ‘sim specs’ which will help show children what it looks like when you have different eye conditions, building a story using a collection of tactile objects, building something from LEGO® or writing a nature-inspired story. To complete

the Summer Reading Challenge, children can read any books they like, including from RNIB’s library at www.rniblibrary. com in whichever accessible format they prefer and these will count towards their Summer Reading Challenge. RNIB has also worked with The Reading Agency to create Amelia, one of the Marvellous Makers - a fictional cartoon creative club who have been created for this year’s Challenge and brought to life by the brilliant illustrator, Natelle Quek. Amelia is visually impaired and holds a long orange cane to assist her with getting around. Additionally, RNIB has created a special guide for library staff to help ensure events are as inclusive as possible The guide can be downloaded for free from The Reading Agency’s website at readingagency. org.uk/resources/7596

For more information about the books available from RNIB and to find titles in accessible formats, visit www.rniblibrary.com

For more information about Summer Reading Challenge events happening in your area, pop in to your local library or visit the Summer Reading Challenge website here https:// summerreadingchallenge. org.uk/join-in and click on ‘Library Zone’. Alternatively head to your library’s website.

As temperatures finally warm up once again and the summer holidays start everyone is being warned to stay safe when visiting Severn Trent’s reservoirs. The sites provide a great, low-cost day out with a range of activities, from walking and cycling routes to bird watching, fishing, cafes, restaurants and children’s play areas. With the sun shining, it might be tempting to venture into the open waters, but the reservoirs can contain hidden dangers including strong currents, freezing temperatures and hidden objects under the surface. Donna Marshall, Visitor Engagement Manager at Severn Trent, said: “Now summer has finally arrived we’re looking forward to welcoming families and people to our wonderful visitor sites. Yet while it may be tempting to some to take a swim in a reservoir to cool off, they’re operational sites. Even on a hot day they’re likely to be extremely cold which can lead to even strong swimmers finding themselves in trouble. We take the safety of all our visitors extremely seriously and want them to remain conscious of the dangers that can result from entering the water. We don’t have lifeguards on site or safe swimming areas, so we’d ask visitors to not take that risk.”

But any unauthorised swimming in reservoirs carries dangers, including:

• The water is colder

than it looks and cold water shock can affect a person’s muscles and cause them to gasp for air which can lead to drowning;

• Reservoirs are operational sites, with machinery under the water which can create strong currents which pose a risk to even strong swimmers;

• Reservoirs have steep sides and can become very deep very quickly;

• The water may contain unseen natural hazards such as weeds, rocks or blue-green algae which can be toxic;

• Not all sites are staffed and they may be out in the countryside, many miles from help if someone gets into trouble.

Severn Trent sites provide a great, low-cost day out with a range of activities, from walking and cycling routes to bird watching, fishing, cafes, restaurants and children’s play areas. The water company has a number of reservoirs visitor sites in the region. They are Carsington, Linacre Water and Upper Derwent Valley and Foremark Reservoir, all in Derbyshire; Thornton Water in Leicestershire; Staunton Harold Water on the Leicestershire/ Derbyshire border; Draycote and Shustoke Water in Warwickshire; Tittesworth Water in Staffordshire and Trimpley Water in Worcestershire.

More details about Severn Trent’s visitor sites are available at https://www. stwater.co.uk/our-visitorsites/

Around 150 children in Yorkshire are diagnosed with cancer every year.

A childhood cancer diagnosis devastates the entire family. It can be especially difficult for siblings to process the emotional difficulty that a cancer diagnosis causes, as well as being apart from their brother or sister and parents, as they need to focus on a sick child in hospital.

Children’s cancer charity Candlelighters recognises this impact on siblings. They provide therapybased sibling groups throughout the year and host an annual sibling residential trip, to help children escape the harsh realities of childhood cancer and enjoy a weekend of fun. This year’s sibling residential took place at Lineham Farm near Leeds. The weekend included fun activities for the children, including archery, low ropes, bushcraft, and exploring the grounds. They met the animals including guinea pigs and fed sheep as well as playing lots of games with friends made at the Candlelighters groups. Natalie Kisby, Head of Family Support at Candlelighters told us “It’s important that siblings

can enjoy the company of other children with a shared understanding of the difficulties of childhood cancer. The Candlelighters sibling residentials offer the opportunity for children to make wonderful new memories whilst making friends and finding companionship in each other.”

Two of the attendees this year were brothers William and Sonny Welsh. Sadly, their brother Rory died in 2016 at just 18 months old, after he was diagnosed with leukaemia. Their mum Laura told us that Candlelighters have supported their family since Rory was diagnosed and following his death. Find out more about Candlelighters and the extensive support they offer for children facing a cancer diagnosis and their families. There are many ways to show your own support to the charity and impact the lives of children and families receiving Candlelighters’ services. Visit their website at Candlelighters to discover how you can make a positive difference of your own.

Tramlines 2024 Announces new scholarship, green initiatives, and support for local businesses

With Tramlines Festival taking place this weekend (26th - 28th July), Sheffield’s biggest party has announced a series of community-focused initiatives which nurture local talent, support environmental sustainability, and boost local businesses. This includes a sponsored scholarship in partnership with WaterBear Music College, new trees in Hillsborough Park and a ‘Hillsborough Hotspots’ campaign to support local business. Tramlines has teamed up with WaterBear Music College to sponsor a three-year scholarship at their newly established Sheffield campus. This scholarship will cover tuition for a BA course, aiming to empower aspiring musicians with top-tier education and opportunities. “This partnership goes right into the core value of the festival,” says Timm Cleasby, Operations Director of Tramlines. “It’s a chance to give back and build up the next generation of artists right here in Sheffield, where music is in our DNA!”

This collaboration with WaterBear is just one of many activities at Tramlines which support young people and education. The festival offers hands-on shadowing experiences with the technical production and press teams. They also host a ‘behind-the-scenes’ tour for journalism students at the University of Sheffield. They have also provided 48 paid graduate work placements since 2018, and members of the Tramlines team give regular talks to Sheffield Hallam, the University of Sheffield, and Sheffield College. Additionally, Tramlines is investing in the future of Hillsborough Park. A donation of £5,000 will fund the planting of new trees, ensuring

that the park remains a beautiful and welcoming space for all. The new trees will be planted during the winter tree planting season following Tramlines 2024 with guidance from the Community Forestry team at Sheffield City Council.

In line with supporting the local economy, Tramlines continues to shine a spotlight on Hillsborough’s businesses through the ‘Hillsborough Hotspots’ guide, showcasing where to visit before heading to Sheffield’s Biggest Party. This initiative promotes local spots like Ue’ Paisa’ for the pizza fans, Cupola Contemporary Art for art enthusiasts, Ellen Jean for sustainable fashion, Hillsborough Tap and Pangolin Craft Beer for the beer lovers, and The Delightful Touch Cafe for cakes, brunch and lunch. In addition to promoting these local businesses online and at the festival, Tramlines has provided heavily subsidised stalls for local traders in their ‘Little Hillsborough’ area, with all infrastructure provided by the

festival. An independent study in 2023 showed a £3.8million annual boost to the Sheffield economy generated by the festival. Tramlines has also maintained its tradition of collaborating with Sheffield company, Tickets for Good to distribute free tickets to NHS staff, charity workers and those affected by the cost of living crisis. This initiative extends the festival’s reach and accessibility, allowing more community members to engage with and enjoy the event. They also distribute a significant number of free and discounted tickets to local residents.

“We are always looking for ways to keep Tramlines supporting the Sheffield community,” says Cleasby. “I love the little touches like school tea towels produced by Hillsborough Primary School which feature the kid’s drawings of our bands. I’m pleased we’ve found ways to support local businesses at the festival, improve the park, and provide a brilliant scholarship opportunity with WaterBear.”

BBPA Responds to King’s Speech

The BBPA has welcomed announcements made in the King’s Speech this morning. In what is the first state opening of Parliament held under a Labour Government in 14 years it gives us a first look at the Governments priorities over the next 5 years. It is welcomed to see the Government prioritise a renewed commitment towards economic growth for businesses and workers after what has been a challenging time for brewers and pubs, as well as staff across the sector.

We will work closely with the Government as they begin to make clear their plans to strengthen careers in hospitality and through planned reforms to the apprenticeship levy and the introduction of the Skills England

Bill. This will go a long way towards addressing staff shortages that have, in some instances, led to closures.

The Planning and Infrastructure Bill, pledging to create highquality housing, will create new communities. We know how important creating a sense of place is for communities up and down the UK and pubs are firmly at the heart of this. We are looking forward to working with policymakers on how we can continue to put pubs and brewers at the centre of this conversation.

Volatility in the energy market has squeezed margins for publicans, and the sector will look closely how the creation of Great British Energy will help secure domestic energy supply and in generating confidence across the sector.

In Labour’s plan for pubs, a crackdown on anti-social behaviour was proposed, we are pleased to see this reiterated in the

King’s speech and will continue working with industry partners like Pubwatch and policymakers in Whitehall to ensure the best possible policies are implemented.

Emma McClarkin, CEO of the British Beer and Pub Association said:

“Britain’s beer and pub sector will welcome the Government’s renewed focus on achieving greater and sustained economic growth as outlined in today’s King’s Speech. Our nation’s brewers and pubs are drivers of local economic growth and high street revitalisation across the UK.

“The BBPA will work closely with ministers as they set out plans to reduce energy costs, along with plans to reform workers’ rights and the apprentice levy, and establish the best practices for venues like pubs to be safe from external threats like terrorism, without the burden of disproportionate cost and bureaucracy.”

DEPARTURES AT THE LANE TRADiTioN mEETS FUTURE

Jayden Bogle has departed Bramall Lane after a significant, undisclosed fee was agreed with Leeds United.

The 23-year-old, who has entered the final year of his current contract, stated that he did not want to sign a new deal at S2 and has subsequently moved to Elland Road.

Signed by Chris Wilder in September 2020 from Derby County, the wingback scored 12 goals in 103 appearances in all competitions across

his four seasons as a Blade. He was part of the promotion-winning squad of 2022-23 and netted five times in 50 top-flight outings in red and white, the last of which came at Old Trafford in April.

Boss Wilder commented: “He made it clear to me this week that he saw his future elsewhere and when that happens, I think the best thing is to get the best price possible for our football club. It is disappointing to lose him but we move on. He

The towering centre half joined the Owls last summer having left Premier League giants Manchester United.

Bernard proved a big hit in S6, making 36 appearances in blue and white across all competitions.

The 23-year-old has since been on international duty with Jamaica over the summer, initially in the Reggae Boyz’ World Cup qualifiers and then the Copa America, taking his tally of caps to 17. He has now joined the SWFC contingent flying out to Germany for the second leg of their pre-season preparations for the 2024/25 campaign.

Bénie Traoré has left the club on a permanent basis, joining FC Basel for an undisclosed fee.

Rotherham United are delighted to confirm the loan capture of Nottingham Forest’s rising star Esapa Osong, who joins the Millers in a temporary switch until the end of the 2024/25 campaign, subject to ratification from the FA, EFL and Premier League.

Steve Evans has swooped to secure the signature of the highly-rated 19-year-old who makes the Millers his first move away from the City Ground where he will be looking to continue to develop upon his return next summer.

The forward has been with the Tricky Trees since his rise from grassroots football into the Forest Academy in 2017 and he has progressed through the ranks since, catching the eye with a hat-tricks against Millwall and Leicester, as well getting himself on the scoresheet in FA Youth Cup ties against Bristol City and Peterborough United.

Osong boasts a CV which details a raft of goals at youth level which have preceded first team outings with Forest in the form of his professional debut against Manchester United in February 2023 in the EFL Cup.

His arrival bolsters Evans’ forward options in which he already has an array of quality with the likes of Sam Nombe, Jonson Clarke-Harris and Jordan Hugill vying for a starting shirt.

“I would like to thank Nottingham Forest, in particular Nuno Espirito Santo and Ross Wilson for helping us sign such a highly thought of player in Esapa Osong,” Rotherham United boss Steve Evans told www.themillers.co.uk.

“This has been a three-month-long process and we have had to show great patience but it will be worth the

work put in.

RoVERS mAiNTAiN 100% PRE-SEASoN

Goals from Jordan Gibson and Kyle Hurst helped Rovers continue their 100 per cent record in preseason with a 2-0 win at Spennymoor Town.

The first half strikes capped a strong performance against the National League North side, who are managed by former Rovers skipper Graeme Lee. Slick attacking play and good movement were showcased at The Brewery Field as Rovers closed out a busy day in promising fashion.

This was the second of a north east double-header on the day, with another Rovers side having triumphed 1-0 at Darlington earlier in the afternoon.

Youth team defender Kasper Williams was drafted in at centre half in the absence of Tom Anderson and produced an accomplished performance alongside Richard Wood.

Spennymoor started well and were inches away from taking the lead when skipper Glen Taylor sent in a fine cross that Junior Mondal was close to turning home.

Rob Ramshaw tried to catch out Louis Jones from the half way line moments later but the Rovers keeper moved into position well to make the save.

And Rovers took the lead on 15 minutes. George Miller brought the ball under control on the right of the box and lashed a low shot which was batted away by keeper Brad James. Sam Straughan-Brown saw his follow-up blocked but Gibson reacted well to slot home.

The lead was doubled on 27 minutes. Hurst collected the ball on the left and weaved his way into the area before smashing a shot home on the angle.

Spennymoor looked to have pulled a goal back on the half hour when Ramshaw headed home at the near post from a Reece Staunton cross but the offside flag was raised.

Hurst rose superbly to flick a header on goal but was denied by a brilliant acrobatic save from James while Ramshaw headed over the bar from a great position at the opposite end just before the break.

Gibson curled a shot over the bar from the edge of the box in the early stages before sending across a brilliant diagonal ball to Miller, who drew a fine low save from James.

Billy Sharp was close to adding to his pre-season tally just after the hour mark when he raced onto a James Maxwell cross and planted a header just off target. Hurst was agonisingly close from extending the advantage after bringing the ball under control 25 yards out and curling a low strike just off target with the keeper nowhere near to the effort.

Maintaining our commitment to collaborating with local businesses within the community, the video reveal featuring academy graduates Oliver Arblaster, Andre Brooks, Will Osula, Eva Butler and Ruby Ormiston was filmed at Loft by Mamnick just a stone’s throw from

our historic Bramall Lane home, whilst the nearby 84 John Street also provided support. Another local business Top Chopper Hair Studios, based on Abbeydale Road, also extended their expertise. Sheffield-based video production company

Oliver Brian Productions were the creative force behind the reveal, and once again Sheffielder and Blades fan Toddla T produced the track which accompanied the film.

Purchase dates for the new home and away kits will be announced shortly at sufc.co.uk
