Visitors to Rotherham town centre will soon be able to shop more safely thanks to the installation of new traffic enforcement cameras, to deter motorists from driving through pedestrian zones. In the first phase of implementation, Rotherham Council is set to install Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at five key sites within the borough. These cameras will capture the number plates of vehicles undertaking prohibited manoeuvres, and will ensure enforcement can be taken against offending drivers who are putting themselves and others at risk by not adhering to the rules of the highway.

The cameras will be introduced in phases, with two locations in the Town Centre and one in Catcliffe going live on Wednesday 28 August. High Street and Bridgegate will be enforcing the pedestrian zone through the existing vehicle access restrictions.

Sheffield Lane in Catcliffe will have a camera to monitor its ‘no entry’ restriction.

Cllr Chris Read, Leader of Rotherham Council said:

““One of the Council’s key priorities is to keep people safe, healthy and well and these new traffic cameras will improve road safety by ensuring that more motorists follow long standing traffic rules, helping to keep pedestrian areas and junctions working properly for everyone. When drivers ignore traffic signs they often become a danger to pedestrians and their fellow road users. These cameras will ensure more motorists follow the restrictions and use our roads safely and responsibly.”

Motorists have ignored restrictions at the five sites for a number of years and until now police officers were needed on site to catch motorists breaking the law. Enforcement powers from the Traffic Management Act (2004) now enable Rotherham Council to use cameras to catch motorists breaking the law and enforce moving traffic offences.

The wife of Roy Castle has praised the significant progress that has been made in the fight against lung cancer on the 30th anniversary of his death.

Fiona Castle believes the late entertainer would think they had done something ‘worthwhile’ as she looks back on what has been achieved over the last three decades in the treatment of lung cancer.

“To see how far we’ve come is quite staggering,” reflects Fiona. “When Roy was diagnosed with lung cancer, the outlook was so bleak. The chances of catching it early were slim and treatments limited.

Now we’re seeing more people diagnosed far sooner, with many ways to treat all stages of the disease.”

The money raised from the Tour of Hope set the wheels in motion to fund the world’s first lung cancer research centre, with millions of pounds of research conducted since.

Mike Davies is a Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation Senior Research Fellow whose work was made possible because of Roy’s legacy. He said: “So much of the work we have undertaken would never have happened without Roy and the charity. This includes the lung cancer biobank where we collected thousands of samples for over 20 years to better understand the disease and speed up diagnosis, as well as the development of a cancer risk score now used in the NHS Targeted Lung Health Check programme.”

NEw REGENERaTION plaNs

The improved approach to regenerating Gleadless Valley will now move forward after proposals were approved on 29th August.

Sheffield City Council’s Strategy and Resources Committee agreed the improved approach, which will see the Council work alongside the community, partners and investors. The new partnership approach will see work towards physical, social and economic improvements take place across Gleadless Valley, despite the tough current financial climate facing regeneration projects nationwide. Rising costs have affected the Council’s ability to implement the 2022 masterplan. The cost increases are the result of the global Covid-19 pandemic, Brexit, the war in Ukraine, and the cost-ofliving crisis. We recognise this is disappointing for the Gleadless Valley community and we reiterate our apology for the delays with this. But now the new approach has been approved, the Council will work with voluntary and community groups, delivery and investment partners to bring additional expertise, capacity and funding into the programme, and make it more deliverable in a

pressing financial climate. Physical improvements to housing, making properties more energy efficient and renovations to public spaces, shops and local services will benefit residents and enable sustainable social and economic benefits for the community. This will be done by establishing a new Gleadless Valley Partnership Board, bringing together residents, relevant community organisations and delivery partners with senior Council leaders to oversee the overall strategy. Cllr Tom Hunt said: “I am pleased the new, improved approach for the regeneration of Gleadless Valley has been approved. A delivery plan for the updated Gleadless Valley regeneration proposals will be developed over the coming year in partnership with the local community. We are determined to work with residents and our partners to regenerate the area for the benefit of all residents.”

Further information will be sent out to those who were contacted last summer regarding building works. The Council will also be reaching out to Gleadless Valley residents to get their thoughts and opinions and will keep them updated regularly on progress.

Last week it was reported in the national media that the government is considering bringing in legislation that would extend the current smoking ban to include more public spaces, including Beer Gardens and outside venues including football stadiums, pubs, clubs and nightclubs. In response to the news, Emma McClarkin, CEO of the British Beer and Pub Association, is calling on the Government to reconsider its “misguided” restriction on smoking in pub gardens. She said: “It is deeply concerning and difficult to understand why the Government would bring forward proposals that will be yet another blow to the viability of our nation’s vital community assets.

“We know from experience that this restriction would have a devastating impact on pubs who are already struggling with soaring energy prices and the cost of doing business.

“For generations pubs have welcomed people, not turned them away, have helped combat loneliness, and provided a vital place where people meet and make friends. These benefits to the community and local economy must not be taken for granted and we urge the Government to reconsider this misguided restriction.”

Also responding, Kate Nicholls, Chief Executive of UKHospitality, said: “A ban on smoking in outdoor spaces comes with the prospect of serious economic harm to hospitality venues. You

only have to look back to the significant pub closures we saw after the indoor smoking ban to see the potential impact it could have.

“This ban would not only affect pubs and nightclubs, but hotels, cafes and restaurants that have all invested significantly in good faith in outdoor spaces and continue to face financial challenges.

“The government must embark on a full and detailed conversation with affected parties on the impact of such a ban before any legislation is laid. It must also assess whether such a ban would achieve its aims of meaningfully reducing smoking or simply relocate smoking elsewhere, such as in the home.”

EARLY GOAL ENOUGH FOR BLADES WE

An early own goal by Watford stopper Daniel Bachmann saw United register their first home league success of the season and in the process extend the unbeaten start in the Sky Bet Championship.

Michael Cooper, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi and Callum O’Hare all played a key role in the decisive moment of the game which came inside the opening 90 seconds and despite Kieffer Moore seeing a first half penalty saved by Bachmann, United enjoyed their Sunday at the Lane in front of a near 27,000 strong crowd.

Boss Wilder made two changes from the starting XI that drew at Norwich for the clash against the Hornets. Ahmedhodžić replaced the recently

departed Trusty, whilst Rak-Sakyi made his full home debut in place of Brooks, who missed out because of concussion protocols. Shackleton was named in the matchday squad for the first time since his summer arrival having shaken off a knee issue.

United got off to the best possible start, with a goal inside two minutes. Cooper launched a kick into the channel, RakSakyi freed O’Hare in the box and he got the better of Sierralta and BACHMANN with the ball eventually rolling into the net off the back of the stopper. On 13 minutes, Watford should have restored parity though, but having got beyond Souttar, Bayo couldn’t direct his lobbed effort on target with Cooper beaten.

The Blades then had the perfect opportunity to double their lead as Moore’s pass into the run of Arblaster was crudely ended by a rash tackle by Larouci, but from the subsequent spot-kick, Moore saw his effort tipped round the post by Bachmann. The Watford number one almost gifted United a second from a poor throw out, but he quickly regained his position to deny Hamer. The half ended with United on the front foot, Hamer again having an effort saved by Bachmann following a mazy run, but at the other end, Ahmedhodžić produced a challenge on Bayo much to the delight of the Kop who rose as one to cheer the crucial intervention.

The hosts were quickly out of the blocks in the second half too, with Rak-Sakyi seeing a leftfooted strike deflected behind with O’Hare again instrumental in the buildup, prior to Larouci being cautioned for a shirt pull on Rak-Sakyi, not his first of the afternoon and he was quickly followed into the book Sierralta who was caught gesturing for a yellow card to be given to Souza.

The Blades first change as the hour approached saw Shackleton replace Gilchrist, but on 62 minutes, following a spell of pressure, Andrews took aim and struck the post for the visitors, before Souza had to run almost the length of the field to halt a potential break as Chakvetadze advanced dangerously

Grant McCann has made it clear to his squad that he expects goals from them in every game this season.

The 3-2 win at Port Vale made it 23 consecutive league games in which Rovers have scored at least one goalcomfortably the longest scoring run in the EFL. Not taking too much pride in the record, McCann said it was the least he expected with the quality of attacking player in his squad.

“With the players we have in this team, we should always be scoring goals,” McCann said. “Or at the very least we should be having opportunities.

“Those are the demands that I always

put on the front end of the pitch.

“I said last week that we have to be more ruthless and we were in this one. I think we still can be more ruthless.

We had opportunities where we got into areas and just didn’t get the right pass or shot off.

“I think once it comes we’ll get more goals than three against someone but I’m really pleased with the overall outcome.”

The Rovers manager was satisfied with the manner in which he had been able to spread minutes throughout his squad over a busy week of action.

McCann made six changes for the Carabao Cup tie at Everton in midweek

before making a further six changes for the visit to Vale Park.

He said: “It was important that we used the group this week and we were able to keep the energy in the squad.

“The subs came on and made a massive impact for us and it was always going to be important.

“We know Port Vale have a massive pitch, we had two away trips to Everton and Port Vale so you need the energy.

“It was also important to get the plan right. This is probably one of the toughest places to come - Port Vale in League Two - and I’ve no doubt they will be right up there with the financial backing they’ve had and the players coming in, top end League One players.

“It was a tough game but we stood up well and performed very well.”

towards goal.

On 81 minutes, Moore latched on to a through ball from Burrows and did everything right, only for Bachmann to keep Watford in the game with another save, before O’Hare was booked and Ahmedhodžić quickly followed for a challenge on Andrews.

During injury-time and after the final whistle tempers threatened to boil over, Hamer, Souttar and Cooper were all booked for the Blades, as was Jebbison for the Hornets, but a late Peck effort to make the game safe was the only notable action in the additional five minutes as United extended their unbeaten start to four league games.
