PoPular events returning to sheffield this autumn

Sheffield is to light up this Autumn, as the city puts on a range of events that are out of this world.

As the nights are beginning to draw in, and with Halloween and Bonfire night now around the corner, popular events are set to return to the city this Autumn.

Councillor Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Development and Skills Committee at Sheffield City Council said: “Its set to be another really exciting Autumn events season for Sheffield.

“Events not only help our communities come together to celebrate joyous occasions, from Bonfire Night to Halloween and so much more, but they really support our local trades

people, businesses and our local performers and cultural organisations too.”

Out of this World

Celebrating its tenth year, the free, city centre event that celebrates all things otherworldly will return to Sheffield on Sunday 27th October.

Spread across the city centre, the event attracts thousands of adults and children, who come to see and enjoy this weird, wonderful and wacky event.

The Winter Garden, Tudor Square and Peace Gardens will play host to the ever popular sci-fi, comic book, gaming and fantasy areas.

Visitors will encounter family favourite heroes and villains including Darth Vader, stormtroopers,

ghostbusters and Short Circuit’s Johnny Five (I’m Alive!). Keep your eyes open for a few superheroes too. At Millenium Square and the Peace Gardens, visitors will be able to step into a world of magic and illusion. From watching performers swallow blazing flames, to witnessing the chainsaw juggling daredevil; some of the UK’s best magicians and illusionists can also be found in this zone.

Aspiring young witches and wizards will also be able to learn magic spells, design and make their own wands, and much more.

The Halloween Zone can be found spread across Town Hall Square, the Peace Gardens, Pinstone and Surrey Street.

Visit The Joker trapped in his Pumpkin Patch as he plays his tricks in the Peace Gardens or take a ride on the classic Ghost Train on Surrey Street. They’ll also be a range of performances, stalls and food to enjoy!

Illuminate the Gardens

Once again, the Botanical Gardens will be lit up for a magical, family friendly weekend between the 1st and 3rd of November.

Light installations are set to dazzle those in attendance, along with a laser show from the iconic glass pavilions, creating an immersive experience.

Visitors can enjoy also fireworks, food and drinks from the licensed bar or get involved in free kids activities and fairground rides, plus much more.

More information can be found on the Welcome to Sheffield website.

Autumn Lights

The UK’s largest touring firework spectacular, Autumn Lights is also set to returns to Sheffield’s Don Valley Bowl on Bonfire Night, Tuesday 5th November.

Guests can expect live entertainment, fairground rides and street food stalls with two firework displays choreographed to music from around the world as the main attraction. It’s the third time the event is being held at Don Valley Bowl with around ten thousand people in attendance last year.

TyreSafe, the UK’s tyre safety charity, has announced its support for the NPCC’s Fatal Four Young Drivers’ campaign with the launch of a new initiative aimed at raising awareness of tyre safety among new and young drivers.

The campaign, running from September 23rd to October 6th, aligns with the NPCC’s focus on the ‘Fatal Four’ driving behaviours, which include speeding, drink and drug driving, mobile phone use, and not wearing a seatbelt.

The TyreSafe New Drivers Campaign, which has been compiled with the support of the Motor Schools Association of Great Britain, Fresh Drivers UK, the Driving Instructors’ Association and FirstCar, aims to educate new and young drivers on the legal requirements for tyre safety and the risks associated with illegal or unsafe tyres. Research conducted by TyreSafe reveals that three in five young drivers never check their tyres, putting them at significant risk of incidents and legal penalties. By promoting responsible driving habits, the campaign seeks to encourage young drivers to adopt regular tyre maintenance practices. It also emphasises the legal and financial consequences of driving with unsafe or illegal tyres, which can include fines, penalty points, and even the potential loss of a driving licence. Furthermore, the campaign is designed to align with and support the NPCC’s Fatal Four focus, delivering targeted messaging that resonates with the young driver demographic.

HELp Us kEEp YOUR LOvEd ONEs LIvING wITH dEMENTIa aNd aL zHEIMER’s safE aNd sOUNd Last Week (21 September) on World Alzheimer’s Day, the Herbert Protocol was rolled out across South Yorkshire, helping to reduce risk and speed up searches in the event that a person with dementia or Alzheimer’s goes missing.

The early intervention information gathering tool consists of a form designed to make sure that if someone goes missing, the police can get access to important information about that person as soon as possible.

If a loved one goes missing, it can be deeply distressing and upsetting for family and friends. Being asked by a police officer to recall lots of detailed information can add to this stress, and therefore the process is designed to remove some of the worry.

Relatives and carers can complete a Herbert Protocol form in advance, so that vital information is readily available to share with the police in the event of an individual going missing. This helps the police save time usually used for gathering information and instead resources can directly start searches sooner. The form includes useful information such as locations they are known to frequent, mobile numbers, medication they require, details of their appearance and a photograph.

Inspector Kay Fitzgerald from South Yorkshire Police explains: “We hope that we never have to search

for missing loved ones, but we know that people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia may be vulnerable to going missing or have a tendency to wander off, so planning ahead is important.

“The Herbert Protocol provides a simple and effective way to help save vital time in the search for a missing person. Readily available information means our officers can focus their time on searching for your loved ones and bringing them home safely.”

If you are concerned about a vulnerable family member living with dementia or Alzheimer’s going missing, visit our Herbert Protocol webpage where you can download a form to complete. Email your completed forms to herbert_protocol@ southyorks.pnn.police.uk

Following completion of the form, relatives and carers can request an NFC enabled (Near-field Communication) assistance Wristband or Hangtag for their family members.

The devices, programmed by South Yorkshire Police, store information about the wearer including their name and an emergency contact number which can be retrieved by emergency services, health professionals via a mobile phone to help return the wearer to safety if they are found lost or in need of assistance.

If you believe a person with dementia or Alzheimer’s is missing, this is an emergency, please call 999. The sooner the police know that someone is missing, the sooner officers can start looking for them.

The Reytons’ sell-out homecoming gig was a celebration of music enjoyed by people of all ages.

A study by Hallam University revealed that the event contributed an impressive £1 million to Rotherham’s economy and £1.36 million benefit for South Yorkshire. The concert held earlier this summer drew thousands of attendees from across the nation, with some travelling from as far as Glasgow and Southampton. It marked the largest outdoor music event ever held at Clifton Park, attracting around 20,00 people. Money spent by fans on public transport, food, drink, and hotels has all positively contributed towards keeping local businesses thriving, whilst putting a sense of pride back in Rotherham.

England’s quarter final Euros match against Switzerland was shown live on a screen at the opposite end of the park to the stage, providing people with another reason to head into Rotherham and join the excitement.

The Reytons performed for over an hour, featuring hits such as Slice of Lime, Red Smoke, and Adrenaline, finishing with Kids Off the Estate and a Disney-inspired fireworks display. It is the first band to play in the park since T-Rex in 1971.

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, Cllr Sheppard, said: “I cannot sum up into words how incredible it was to have The Reytons perform in Clifton Park. The atmosphere on the day was thrilling and a joy to be a part of. Having the band here has done wonders for the local economy and given residents something to be proud of. Visitors have said that Clifton Park was an excellent venue, and the event was very well run so we will now be looking to see whether we can host similar such events in the future.”

Fans took to social media to share their views on the concert, with some saying:

One said: “We come from Warrington. The minute we got off the train station at Rotherham there were volunteers trying to help us. We went to Ginge’s Snap for some food and beer. The owner and her team were unbelievable, so friendly. We got the vibe the whole town was keen to make this work. Throughout the day the local people were helpful and positive. The whole day was brilliant, and I thought Rotherham really embraced the event and really made a couple of outsiders welcome. As a town you should be proud of yourselves. Well done Rotherham and thank you.”

Another fan added: “Wow what an amazing event. Over 20,000 people visited Rotherham which was great for many businesses, pubs, hotels, cafes etc and putting Rotherham on the map. Would be awesome to see more big festival gigs in Clifton Park as it proved it’s a great place for music.”

oBituary | dennis Churms - 1931-2024

Everyone at Rotherham United has been deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player Dennis Churms, aged 93.

A Rotherham lad, Dennis represented the Millers between 1953 and 1956 and made 15 appearances in total for his hometown club.

Dennis’ time with the club coincided with a period in which the Millers boasted talented players such as the legendary Gladstone Guest, Jack Grainger and Lol Morgan, meaning that opportunities to pull on a red and white shirt were always going to be at a premium. He will forever be remembered for being a part of the squad that

managed a fifth placed finish in Division Two in 1953/54 before the club came the closest it has ever come to promotion to the top flight as they finished in third place a year later, being denied a place at English football’s top table on Goal Difference, as they finished behind only Birmingham City and Luton Town. His debut came in the inside left position when he stood in for Guest against Nottingham Forest in Division Two on 16th January 1954 and he would enjoy a run of nine consecutive games in the side a season later.

Dennis departed Millmoor in 1956 and later represented

Coventry City and Exeter City before hanging up his boots.

Everyone at Rotherham United would like to

extend their heartfelt condolences to all of Dennis’ family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

McCann took great pride in how his side handled being a man down for more than 40 minutes of the game after Harry Clifton was dismissed for two early bookable offences.

Danny Röhl gave praise to his side for their performance at Kenilworth Road on Saturday.

Although not enough to leave with points, Wednesday showed plenty against Luton and controlled large parts of the contest.

It was all going so well, deservedly in front courtesy of a stunning hit from Barry Bannan but the game swung on one huge second half moment.

Di’Shon Bernard’s red card was the big turning point in Luton’s favour and the Hatters capitalised with a late comeback.

“We were the better team but we lost,” Röhl said.

pressure after goalscorer Ethan Harrison was sent off after the break, eventually getting their rewards when Tom Anderson headed in from a corner.

McCann was also frustrated that Rovers were denied the opportunity to fully implement their game plan due to Clifton’s harsh dismissal and that they ultimately did not claim all three points. He said: “I’m frustrated. I’m here proud of the players in how they performed after 57 minutes or so when we made the changes. And

improvement, we are investing, it’s all there and we are taking steps forward and it’s what I want to see.

“But at the moment we are lacking that final part to take the wins.

“But we have to keep working in this way and we will get the points.

“I think last week we had a 50-50 decision that went against us and today another 50-50 decision against us but we had three or four opportunities to score more.

“To take the win away you need to be clinical but all in all I cannot say anything against my team, they keep invest, invest, invest and our supporters recognised this today. It is a big pity.”

even before that as well.

“It’s difficult when you come to a very much possession-based team when you’ve got ten men and you’re having to keep your shape, shuffle, work hard, they’re doubling up on you and you’re having to defend your box well.

“I’m proud of the players to respond in how they did. We had moments still with ten men but once it went to ten-v-ten I thought we were much better.”

McCann took great delight in seeing Rovers net from a set piece after making no secret of his desire for his side to take

Röhl continued: “After the equaliser, the pressure goes higher and higher and you hear the crowd come into the game more and more.

“It’s hard then, they get the moments but even after 2-1 we had another opportunity to make the equaliser but we fight to the end.

“Until the red card we were the better team, we controlled the game, we had a good pressing, we had the structure and were always dangerous.

“But at the end we have lost the game and now we need to keep going.

“We need the team togetherness and we will come through, if we fight like this then results will come.”

advantage from dead ball situations.

“It was really pleasing to see a set piece routine come off, where we tried to isolate Tom Anderson in there one-v-one,” McCann said.

“I’ve had a bit of a gripe with the boys over weeks gone by this season and last season as well. When we aren’t getting a goal from open play, we need to find something from a set play. It was nice to see that happen.

“It was a tremendous ball from Sarbs [Joe Sbarra] and he had another from the other side.”
