Mayor unveils revaMped Corn exChange aFTer £5M regeneraTion

Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones this week officially unveiled the Corn Exchange building at Doncaster Market, following the completion of a £5m Government-funded revamp.

Originally built in 1870 as a concert hall and marketplace, the iconic grade II listed building, which features Victorian classical architecture with a dome similar to that on the original Crystal Palace, has gone through 24 months of restoration to regenerate the building back to its former glory.

Works to the historic Grade II Listed building have included a whole host of vital repair and restoration works, including repairs to the roof, improvements to the drainage, as well as heritage restoration to the windows and stonework. The works have also seen the removal of the non-original

mezzanine, providing a flexible, open space which will be able to host a diverse range of events from shows to pop up markets. A range of new features have also been added. These include a new staircase, new lighting including LED feature lighting, improved heating, new accessible toilets, new fire doors and a new ventilation system. In addition to this, a brand-new gallery flooring and ten new retail units have been added, as well as improved access around the entirety of the building.

Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones said: “Our treasured Corn Exchange has had extensive restoration, bringing it back to its former glory, completing this latest stage of investment to our Doncaster Markets, making the space both more accessible and versatile to thrive in a 21st century city centre, improving the visitor

experience and preserving this significant piece of Doncaster history. In a nod to its original purpose as a concert hall, the building has also been reconfigured to be able to hold events there for over 400 people.”

“Over the next few months, the Corn Exchange will offer a variety of events to showcase its return. In the lead-up to Christmas people can come along and enjoy an artisan market, Christmas workshops and theatre shows, providing added attractions to our extensive ‘Countdown to Christmas’ line up. I look forward to seeing this building play host to events and enterprise once again and I encourage everyone to look at what events are coming up and come and see the transformation for yourselves.”

Raymond Linch, managing director of Market Asset Management, which is

the operator of Doncaster Market and the Corn Exchange, said: “With the soft launch set for November, we already have a full calendar of events booked in for the coming months. The retail units are set to open in Spring 2025 and demand is already high. It’s an exciting time for Doncaster, and we’re proud to have played a part in the Corn Exchange’s next chapter.”

The Corn Exchange will officially open for retail in

Spring 2025. Before then, from 30th November the building will open its doors for events, with a selection planned over the next six months.

The first event will take place on 30th November, with Mother Hooker’s Festive Winter Market taking place in the building from 9am4pm. The Corn Exchange will also host its first pantomime ‘The Modern Christmas Panto – a re-telling of Robin Hood’ from 3rd-15th December.

latest updates from south yorkshire’s mayor

South Yorkshire’s Mayor and leaders from across Local Government and health came together to officially launch WorkWell, a new early intervention service that’s supporting people with physical or mental health conditions to stay in work or return to work.

The launch at the South Yorkshire Housing Association (SYHA) offices in Sheffield on Wednesday 6 November, brought together partners, stakeholders and those who have accessed forerunner employment support programmes, to discuss the new service and how it can be accessed in the region.

Ruth Salvin, 45, who has recently signed up to WorkWell was at the event. She is currently out of work due to health reasons and she hopes the service will help get her confidence back.

Ruth said: “I started on WorkWell last week. I’m hoping being on this course will give me more confidence to return to work and increase my confidence in my abilities to work in childcare. It has been good so far; my employment support officer Mark is being very supportive and I appreciate his advice. I’m looking forward to be able to return to work and use the skills that I’ve acquired.”

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard, as well as representatives from SYHA and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), spoke at the launch event about what this new service means for the region. SYMCA was recently awarded more than £3.5m as one of 15 pilot areas across England to deliver WorkWell. SYMCA will provide the service in partnership with SYHA. The new service provides a referral mechanism for employees and employers to ask for the support they need.

WorkWell offers a tailored early-intervention work and health support and assessment service, and a single, joined-up gateway to other support services.

Leigh Arnold, 35, is a Peer Support Worker, who previously received employment support from South Yorkshire Housing Association. He spoke at the event about his experiences.

Leigh said: “The employment support I received helped me

with my CV and helped me with the application, so it was a lot more targeted, it wasn’t just about numbers it was actually helping me with what I wanted to go into. It made a massive difference. It got me a job in a sector that I was finding it difficult to get into myself and I had ongoing employment support after I got the job. I think if WorkWell is anything like what I experienced then it will definitely help people. If it’s targeted and focused on what your interests and skills are then you’re setting people up to win.”

WorkWell offers low-intensity holistic support to people who are struggling due to a physical or mental health condition and or disability. health condition or disability, to overcome work and health related barriers to employment.

The WorkWell Partnership will enable a wide range of local organisations to connect individuals to the support they need. Partners across work and health, such as GPs, Primary Care services, Job Centre Plus, Local Authorities, Employers and the Voluntary Community Sector will be able to make referrals into this service later this year.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard, who also chairs the region’s Integrated Care Partnership, said “The poor health that scars our region doesn’t just hold back our economy, it stops people from making the most of their talents and enjoying the lives they deserve. Through the innovative Working Win scheme, we’ve already supported 6,500 people back to work. Through the additional funding for WorkWell, we’ll be able to support many more people across South Yorkshire, so that everyone has the opportunity to stay near and go far.”

One of the main focuses of the Integrated Care Partnership Board in South Yorkshire is the relationship between employment and improving population health.

Juliann Hall of South Yorkshire Housing Association, said: “Good work is important because it can offer people new experiences, help to build local connections, and provide meaning and purpose. At

South Yorkshire Housing Association, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunities and support to find a job they can flourish in.

WorkWell will ensure that people living with health conditions and disabilities are supported to find and stay in work and given the chance to share and grow their talents in South Yorkshire. We’re delighted to be partnering with SYMCA on another much-needed employment support programme and looking forward to working with local communities and organisations in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.”

South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, is supporting Sceptre, a national week of police action to tackle knife crime.

The bi-annual week of action, held from 11-17 November, sees South Yorkshire Police stepping up activities to tackle knife crime, working with partners from across the county. As well as conducting policing operations such as knife seizures the force will take part in increased community engagement, proactive communications, the delivery of educational materials on the dangers of carrying knives, and information on the impact that knife crime has on victims, perpetrators, families, and communities. South Yorkshire’s Mayor took on Police and Crime Commissioner powers following May’s election, with one of his manifesto commitments prioritising a zero-tolerance approach to knife crime.

Commenting, South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard said: “Knife crime is a scourge on our communities, destroying the lives of both victims of knife crime and those who carry knives. Across the country, the rates of knife crime are growing, and they are growing more quickly in South Yorkshire than in other similar places. That’s why as South Yorkshire’s Mayor I have made knife crime a priority and committed to take a zero-tolerance approach. Weeks of action like Sceptre are important, not just for taking knives off the streets in the short

autism plus - support

term, but also by putting early intervention and education at the heart of that approach. Everyone in South Yorkshire has the right to feel safe and secure, whoever they are, wherever they are. By working with South Yorkshire Police and across our communities, I am determined to make that vision a reality.” Knife crime includes all incidents that involved a knife or a sharp instrument, with the exception of possession of weapon offences and homicides as these are counted separately. In South Yorkshire there has been a downward trend in the numbers of incidents over the last 12 months of recorded figures (according to Office of National Statistics). In the period between July 2023 and June 2024 there were 1,492 incidents involving a knife or sharp instrument. In the previous 12-month period the reported number of incidents were 1,614. This has come down from its peak in 2017/18 of 1,772. Nationally a lot of work is being done to target the accessibility of deadly and intimidating weapons to reduce how easily they can end up in the wrong hands. The recent ban of ‘zombie-style’ knives and machetes supports policing in stopping their manufacture and overall availability. The fight to remove knife crime from our communities has also been further strengthened with the government’s recent announcements about a proposed ban on certain types of swords and the largest ever review into how knives are sold online to identify any gaps in legislation which will prevent these being sold illegally to under18s. In reality very few people carry knives but if someone you know is carrying a knife you can report it to the police, speak to a trusted family member or teacher, or you can report it anonymously to Crimestoppers. If there are areas where you live or spend time that don’t feel safe you can report this on a website called StreetSafe. The information is passed to your local police force who can then look at what they can do to improve safety in that area

Think pink if you’re planning to take public transport to the St Luke’s Hospice Festival of Light on Sunday, December 1.

A long-standing tradition at the popular event is that First Bus provides a free park and ride service for visitors, running between the Tesco car park at Abbeydale Road and St Luke’s at Little Common Lane, helping to ease traffic and parking problems.

And this year the bus will be especially easy to spot as it will be the bright pink single-decker that was launched in September to celebrate the 25-year partnership between First Bus and St Luke’s.

“Our First Bus shuttle is always an essential part of our Festival of Light and one that makes visiting the event really easy for our visitors,” said St Luke’s Senior Fundraising Manager Matthew Sheridan. “We’re delighted that in this milestone year for this very special partnership, First’s pink

St Luke’s bus will be providing the service and making a genuinely standout contribution to the evening.”

REVEREND AND THE MAKERS RELEASE CHARITY CHRISTMAS SINGLE

Reverend & The Makers have unveiled their new Christmas single ‘Late Night Phone Call’ which was released last week on November 15th alongside a video in proud support of Samaritans. Speaking about their new single, frontman Jon McClure says, “‘Late Night Phone Call’ is a weird one in that it isn’t a Christmas song and doesn’t really have a chorus, yet it totally felt like a Christmas pop song from the very beginning. It’s also based loosely on a true story where I went out and had a gallon of Guinness and rang Laura up on the way home drunkenly telling her that I love her.

“As you can see in the video, she wasn’t initially too impressed given the hour but obviously I won her round with a bit of the old Northern charm. My mum and friends all cried when they heard the song. My dad was a big fan of it before he passed away so there’s a lot of emotion wrapped up in it too as it’s our first Xmas without him.”

The festive season can highlight feelings of loneliness and isolation for many people and is an issue close to Jon McClure’s heart. Since 2020, he has been offering private one-on-one online shows on Christmas Day for fans spending the day alone. By lending support to Samaritans, Reverend & The Makers hope to draw attention to the issue and the support that is available.

McClure says, “I wanted to get Samaritans involved as people being alone and in a bad place at Christmas time is something that has always really bothered me. Every year on Christmas day I Zoom a bunch of people who are alone and struggling and play them a song to cheer them up a little. I kinda thought we could go one step further with that this year and direct them towards a charity that is there to help with this. Times are tough for a lot of people and it’s not hard as an artist to help people in this way.”

Julie Bentley, CEO of Samaritans, said: “Jon’s late night phone call led to a happy, life-changing event with his marriage to Laura and for many people, phoning Samaritans can be just as life-changing, even life-saving.

“Sadly, loneliness is one of the most common concerns we hear about, particularly during the festive season but, unlike Jon, no one should worry about waking our volunteers up with a late night phone call – they are here 24/7, even on Christmas day, to help anyone struggling with their mental wellbeing.

“Personally, I would like to say a huge thank you to Reverend and the Makers for choosing to raise awareness of Samaritans services via their new single. Our winter campaign this year is all about Breaking the Silence and I’ve no doubt Late Night Phone Call will help people do just that, so I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that it makes it all the way to Christmas

number one.”

The doo-wop-tinged love song sees Jon McClure serenading the love of his life (“it’s me entering my Vegas period,” he jokes), stumbling his drunken way home, building towards a dramatic, soul revue crescendo. It marks the first new material to be released by the Sheffield five-piece since their seventh studio album ‘Heatwave

In The Cold North’ which debuted at no.6 last year, giving the band their first Top 10 album since their debut album The State of Things, which reached No.5 in 2007, their biggest single in over a decade and an unbroken run of seven Top 20 albums to date.

Reverend & The Makers have announced they will play their biggest headline show to date at Rock N Roll Circus at Don Valley Bowl in Sheffield on 30th August 2025.

Late Night Phone Call is available now on all streaming platforms.

In the final minutes, head coach Jim O’Brien introduced a Trialist in attack, and in the dying seconds he almost nicked the three points, but his effort rolled agonisingly past the far post.

all the very best in the future.”

Everyone at Sheffield Wednesday would like to thank Steven for his services and wish him the best of luck in his new role and beyond.

MCCANN PLEDGES CANDID VIDEO SESSIONS TO UNEARTH A MORE RUTHLESS ROVERS

Grant McCann has pledged plenty of hard work to get Rovers firing after being frustrated by a lack of clinical edge against Salford City. Rovers enjoyed much the better of the attacking play but struggled for clear cut opportunities - with Billy Sharp’s equaliser being their only shot on target. Manager McCann says there will be plenty of focus on the moments in which Rovers’ lack of composure let them down as he seeks to bring out ruthlessness from his group.

“The one bit of quality and calmness we showed was a great run from Joe Sbarra, a calm ball across to Billy Sharp and a calm finish,” McCann said.

“There are too many

times when we get to that top end of the pitch that it just seems to be rushed.

We do things too quickly where we can take an extra touch.

“With the opportunities that we had, we just have to be better. The players know that and understand that but we certainly have to be better when we get to the top end of the pitch because it’s not acceptable to hit your cross into somebody or get your shot blocked.

“You have to work your feet and move people to score goals - just like Joe and Billy did for our goal.

“It was clear to see and I’ve said it for a few weeks now, particularly at home, that we’re just not clinical enough at the top end of the pitch.

It’s just not good enough for us.

“It has to be about repetition for us now, in terms of how we want to play, work and get the players into position.

I speak about it all the time when we don’t win or take our chances - I’m not a rigid manager and

I don’t tell the players where to go. I like them to have freedom at the top end of the pitch.

“They have that freedom but at the minute they’re

not picking the right pass or the right cross or the right shot. The decisions they make are wrong and we need to be better.

“Maybe we need to sit the boys down next
