mayor joins national road safety week
South Yorkshire’s Mayor met with primary school pupils to talk about keeping safe on our roads as part of action taking place across the region during National Road Safety Week 2024. Mayor Oliver Coppard, alongside Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley, South Yorkshire’s Active Travel Commissioner, Ed Clancy OBE, and road victim charity, Brake, heard about the steps children at Mundella Primary school are taking to make streets safer for walking and wheeling. Over the last five years, 190 people have been killed in a road crash on South Yorkshire roads. Another 3,819 people have been seriously injured.
South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, said: “The number of deaths and serious injuries on South Yorkshire’s roads is far too high. Our road network has to be safe for everyone who uses and wants to use it. That’s why I’ve made Vision Zero the goal in South Yorkshire, because one death on our roads is one too many. Collisions have a devastating impact and we want to put an end to the unnecessary grief and suffering caused by each and every one of those accidents. We are supporting Brake in their work to support victims as well as the vital work of the many organisations involved when a crash happens.”
During Road Safety Week, South Yorkshire Safer Roads (SYSR) partners are shining a light on the impact of crashes and raising awareness about the devastating toll on communities. Teams from across each district have engaged with priority road user groups to help them understand the effects of road crashes, and have raised awareness about the heroes who not only attend collisions but provide support to families afterwards.
Road Safety Week began with World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on Sunday 17 November. The global event remembers the many millions who have been killed and seriously injured on the world’s roads and acknowledges the suffering of all affected victims, families and communities. Brake has called for sustainable funding and parity of care for road victims as well as highlighting the
amazing work of people who support them, including the charity’s National Road Victim Service. A spokeswoman for Brake said: “Through road safety week, we are bringing communities together to remember loved ones who have died or suffered lifechanging injury in road crashes. We are helping children and young people learn about the people who help us after a crash. We are helping organisations that employ people who drive for work to learn why we need robust investigation into the causes of road crashes, so we can understand why they happen and prevent future road death and harm. We are helping people whose lives have been torn apart by road crashes to talk about their experience.”
Brake’s National Road Victim Service provides expert emotional and practical support to thousands of road victim families during their darkest and most difficult times. You can find out more about the campaign here: https://www.brake. org.uk/road-safety-week
Louise Haigh MP joined pupils from her Sheffield Heeley constituency to celebrate the steps they are taking to get more active.
Manor Lodge Community Primary and Nursery School takes part in WOW – the walk to school challenge from charity Living Streets. WOW sees pupils record how they get to school using the interactive WOW Travel Tracker with those who walk, wheel, cycle, scoot or ‘Park and Stride’ to school being awarded a monthly WOW badge.
Nationally, just 49 per cent of 5-10-year-olds currently walk to school. However, despite only starting WOW in September this year, walking rates at Manor Lodge Community Primary School have increased from 37 per cent to 52 per cent, with 76 per cent of journeys recorded on the WOW Travel Tracker being active – either walked, wheeled, cycled or scooted.
Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley was also joined by South Yorkshire’s Active Travel Commissioner, Ed Clancy OBE where they heard from pupils about the benefits of walking to school, from being
healthier and talking to friends to helping protect the environment. Louise said: “I was delighted to join the children and parents from Manor Lodge on their walk to school today. It’s important that all young people are able to walk, cycle or scoot to school – giving them a great start to the day. With more children walking to school, we can boost wellbeing and reduce the numbers of cars that are outside of schools. That’s good for children and parents alikecreating greener, happier and healthier local communities.”
Ed Clancy, South Yorkshire’s Active Travel Commissioner, said: “Schools are at the heart of our plans here in South Yorkshire. We know walking and wheeling keeps children active and healthy, and I’m a big believer in the link between physical activity, wellbeing, positivity and productivity. Children want fun, independence and exploration. But families don’t always feel able to choose walking, wheeling or cycling for the school run. It’s my ambition to break down those barriers. To build safer streets that give everyone the freedom and choice to move more and differently. Because by enabling healthy habits for kids early on we can help to create healthier, happier neighbourhoods now and for generations to come.” Catherine Woodhead, Chief Executive, Living Streets said: “It’s fantastic that Louise Haigh MP could join us to see the great strides pupils in her constituency are making to get more active on the journey to school.
“Everyone at Manor Lodge Community Primary School should be proud knowing that their actions are helping to reduce road danger and congestion. We hope that the visit from Louise Haigh and Ed Clancy encourages them to keep up the fantastic work.”
white ribbon day
It’s White Ribbon Day and it’s everyone’s opportunity to sign a pledge against violence towards women and girls.
“It starts with men” is the theme of this year’s White Ribbon Day and men are being encouraged to hold themselves accountable to women and to each other. This means supporting women and girls by taking action that contributes towards positive behaviour change and transforms harmful behaviours.
Gender equality is key to making this culture change happen and is achievable if men and boys understand and assume their responsibility as allies. Violence against women and girls is rooted in harmful views of what is masculine. Statistics remain clear and shocking. In the year ending March 2023, South Yorkshire Police recorded 39,016 domestic abuse-related incidents and crimes.
Around 6,000 people seek support from domestic abuse services and sexual abuse services in Sheffield each year, and around 90% of them are women. In YOUGOV’s survey three years ago, 63% of men said they agree that men in society aren’t doing enough to ensure the safety of women and girls. Starting with men, there is an absolute need to address the attitudes and behaviours that can contribute to a fear of violence for women and girls in their day-to-day lives.
Sheffield City Council is showing its commitment to working towards achieving gender equality and ending violence against women and girls (VAWG). Since becoming an accredited White Ribbon organisation in 2022, the Council has been encouraging men to sign the White Ribbon pledge and wear a white ribbon, which is a promise to never commit, excuse or remain silent about male violence against women and girls. Actions for 2025 will see the Council working to its new Violence Against Women and Girls, Domestic and Sexual Abuse Strategy, which will build on existing efforts and outline a strong, multiagency response.
gritters out & about places.
The newly named fleet of Streets Ahead gritters have been working hard over the last four days making sure the roads of Sheffield were kept clear of ice and snow following the recent wintery weather. Since Sunday, gritters including Jessica Ennis Chill, Snow Root, the Burkhill Blizzard Blaster, Sleet McKee and the Tinsley Cooling Plougher have been out ensuring the city’s priority one and priority two routes have been prepared for the snow and ice. The gritting routes can take up to four or five hours to complete at a time and priority one routes include the main arterial routes which link Sheffield to other major cities and motorways with route two focusing on bus routes, link roads, roads where key public service facilities are located as well as rural routes. In this recent spell of winter weather, the gritters have been out on roads on the higher ground as well as the lower ground and in total have spread over 1,000 tonnes of grit salt. With the weather forecast predicting temperatures to remain just above freezing for this week and into next, teams will continue to be on standby 24/7 and ready to respond to any icy conditions. The fleet of gritters were named last week following a competition which asked the public and local schools to come up with names that had a winter theme and reflected Sheffield people of
The response to the competition was tremendous with over 400 entries received and the winning names were revealed at an event attended by children from some of the winning schools as well as Sheffield’s fund-raising legend and the Man with a Pram, John Burkhill. Councillor Joe Otten of Sheffield City Council said: “I’d like to say thank you to everyone who took the time to send us in a name. The response to the competition was tremendous and some of the names were very creative with the Sheffield-based names and people. It made judging a very difficult task but congratulations to the winners. The gritting team do a brilliant job, sometimes is difficult circumstance, in order to keep the roads and footways of Sheffield clear of snow and ice in order to keep the city moving. So if you see Jessica Ennis Chill, Snow Root, Gritchard Thawley and the other gritters give them a wave as their out and about.”
John Kirk, winter maintenance manager at Amey Ltd said: “The newly named gritters were out and about during the day and throughout the night earlier this week in response to the snow and ice. All priority one and priority two routes were treated, both on high and low ground, at least four times each to make sure the roads were kept clear.”
Outstanding! That’s the verdict from the Care Quality Commission on St Luke’s Hospice patient care.
Inspectors from the CQC - the independent regulator of all health and social care services in England - looked at every aspect of St Luke’s activity and assessed that its leadership, effectiveness and responsiveness were all outstanding. And with safety also rated good, that meant an overall rating of outstanding for St Luke’s services. The report found that patients, families and carers had highlighted the warmth and kindness of the St Luke’s team. There was praise too for the way in which St Luke’s ensured continuity of care, with staff working together effectively to provide safe support that met people’s individual needs. “Patients and their families we spoke with confirmed that they saw the same people for their care and that they were reliable, knowledgeable and caring,” the report said. There was also praise for the way in which the hospice worked with external partners to ensure continuity of care.
“Patients experienced a high standard of care delivered by a team of qualified, skilled and
experienced staff,” the report added. “Patients felt well supported and staff worked to ensure that patients were cared for in a supportive and safe environment.”
St Luke’s Jo Lenton commented: “This is our first visit by the CQC since 2016 and we are delighted to have once again been rated outstanding by inspectors. In the period between the two visits we have, of course, been through a pandemic that meant major changes to the way in which were able to provide care. But we were determined never to let our standards fall in any area of our service and this new rating shows that the hard work and commitment of everybody who works at St Luke’s has really paid off. Our primary aim has always been to put our patients and their families at the heart of everything we do and it is particularly rewarding that inspectors recognised this and praised the dedication and hard work of all the St Luke’s teams. We have been here for all the people of Sheffield for over 50 years now and we will build on this success to keep providing outstanding care for the people of Sheffield for many generations to come.”

PULP, KASABIAN & THE REYTONS TO HEADLINE TRAMLINES 2025
Tramlines 2025: Pulp Headlines and picks artists on Friday’s Main Stage, with The Reytons and Kasabian completing the weekend
Sheffield’s Tramlines Festival has unveiled its eagerly awaited 2025 line-up, set to take over Hillsborough Park from 25th to 27th July for its 16th edition. Leading the charge is Sheffield’s own Pulp, who will not only headline Friday’s main stage but have also handpicked the acts to share the stage that day. Saturday sees local heroes The Reytons take centre stage, while Brit-rock heavyweights Kasabian wrap up the event for a powerful finale on Sunday.
Formed in 1978, Pulp played extensively around Sheffield at venues like The Leadmill and The Limit before finding fame in the 90s with LPs like, ‘Different Class’ and ‘His ‘n’ Hers’. Their debut at Tramlines marks only the 4th
time they have played in Sheffield since the year 2000 and the first time they have curated a main stage at a Sheffield festival. Pulp’s picks for the main stage include Spiritualized, the masters of sweeping, atmospheric melodies, Baxter Dury, whose offbeat lyrics and style have earned him cult status. and Paris-based indie-folk trio Oracle Sisters, making for a diverse and exciting start to the festival.
Friday will also see electronic trailblazers Hot Chip perform a high-energy DJ set; and Sheffield’s own I Monster, best known for the unforgettable “Daydream in Blue,” bring their unique twist on electronic music to the line-up. Saturday sees The Reytons taking the top spot, a huge milestone for the Rotherham band whose sharp, no-nonsense lyrics and high-energy performances have won them fans far beyond Yorkshire. Sharing the stage are
Franz Ferdinand, bringing their dance-floor indie anthems, and the resurgent Rizzle Kicks with their playful mix of hip-hop and pop. Natasha Bedingfield, Jake Bugg, and Heather Small will bring even more star power to the day, with tracks that everyone will know and love. The Futureheads, Freddie Halkon, Chloe Slater, and Daydreamers add to a packed bill, and local favourites Everly Pregnant Brothers will be along to give the day a proper Sheffield feel. Sunday promises a spectacular finale, headlined by Brit-rock giants Kasabian, who will close the festival in style. Leading up to their electrifying set, the day offers something for everyone, including theatrical rockers The Last Dinner Party, Norwegian pop sensation Sigrid, and acclaimed Irish songwriter CMAT. Special guests Scouting for Girls will bring their crowd-pleasing hits, while The Sherlocks, The Lathums, and rising
stars like Soft Launch and Cliffords will keep the energy high all day..
Timm Cleasby, Tramlines Operations Director, said: “It’s absolutely massive to have Pulp headlining Friday, and even more special to have them curating the whole day—it’s a real celebration of what Sheffield’s all about.
The Reytons topping the bill on Saturday is another big moment for the local scene. They’ve come so far, and it’s great to see them getting the recognition they deserve. We’ve put together a line-up that’s got something for everyone, and we’re buzzing to welcome everyone back to Hillsborough Park.”
In the lead-up to the announcement, fans noticed hints popping up across Sheffield. From billboards featuring iconic song lyrics to special bottles of Henderson’s Relish sent to lucky fans who had signed up online, the teasers sparked excitement
citywide. Adding to the buzz, exclusive Tramlines-branded bottles of Hendos even appeared in local shops around Hillsborough and were given to unsuspecting shoppers over the weekend.
Matt Davies, General Manager of Henderson’s Relish said: “Henderson’s Relish wants to apologise, once again, for failing to keep a secret about the line up at Tramlines 2025. It turns out that the Art student from Athens helping out in the Hendo’s office printed the band’s names on to miniature bottles and sent them all around the city. To be honest, we can’t blame her entirely, because after a few free Rum and Cokes, we all thought it’d be quite a laugh... but we recognise we can’t see anyone else smiling about it now. Hopefully you’ll have forgiven Henderson’s by the year Two thousand and Twenty Five? “ As ever, Tramlines is about more than music.. This year, the festival has funded a
of
in Hillsborough Park, planted by Sheffield City Council Community Forestry with help from the pupils at Hillsborough Primary School. Tramlines also announced over £30k of grants to 36 local causes in the latest round of funding from the Tramlines Trust. The total raised for charity and charitable causes since 2018 now stands at a staggering £260k. They also continue to ensure the festival remains accessible with hundreds of tickets distributed to local residents and through projects like Tickets for Good.
The pre-sale for Weekend and day tickets will be live from 6pm on Thurs 28th November for those who are signed-up via the Tramlines website - https:// tramlines.org.uk/presale/ The general sale of tickets is live at 12pm on Friday, 29th November. For more information, visit tramlines.org.uk

“He worked extremely hard and he’s been patient but there’s definitely a talent there,” is the current assessment of Tyrese Campbell from Chris Wilder. FOURTH DEFEAT IN FIVE GAMES FOR MILLERS
Will Swan’s first-half goal helped Crawley beat Rotherham at the Broadfield Stadium which left their former boss Steve Evans ruing the Millers missed opportunities. Swan struck early in the first half to condemn the Millers to a fourth defeat in five League One games. Carwley have not scored inside the first 15 minutes of any league game so far this season although forward Ade Adeyemo came close early on when he drove narrowly over from the edge of the area. At the other end defender Joy Mukena made a vital block when the recalled Jonson Clarke-Harris directed a point-blank header from Hakeem Odoffin’s cross.
Crawley went in front when Toby Mullarkey picked out Swan with an
midweek encounter with Oxford United.
Speaking of Campbell, who signed as a free transfer in the summer, boss Wilder added: “He was a player we were interested in a few years ago and we keep out eyes on those types of players as well.

The hosts bossed the first half and the Millers rarely threatened, although Nottingham Forest loanee Esapa Osong forced keeper Jojo Wollacott to make a scrambling save just before the interval.
Rotherham, with the wind behind them, had more possession at the start of the second half and substitute Alex MacDonald put a free-kick only just wide. Crawley substitute Tyreece John-Jules threatened with virtually his first touch, his shot on the turn saved by Phillips.
Substitute Rafiq Khaleel should have extended Crawley’s lead late on but wastefully shot over after being set up by Jeremy Kelly. The Millers had a chance to steal a point right at the death, but substitute Ciaran McGuckin was unable to connect at the far post.
was small fees, loans and frees so he fit in that category. We’ve shown him a bit of love, shown him a bit of direction but from my point of view, it’s what we try and do, getting the best out of players. Every manager has to maximise that and get the best out of any single player and a group. “I believe a lot of credit goes to the boy in terms
we made it 2-1, we would have won the game comfortably.
“We have scored a lot of nice goals this season and to be honest I would take a ‘dirty’ goal, anything with a bit of luck that we cannot seem to get.
“But it will come. I am happy with my players and what they are showing, it is now about going to the next level.
“We have two away games next week and we will be ready.”
of him getting his act together and getting himself fit, working away from the lights and doing what he needed to do because he wasn’t in great shape physically. And I don’t blame him for that because training on your own is difficult. He worked extremely hard and he’s been patient but there’s definitely a talent there.”
Lionesses to return to the Lane

McCann convinced by Rovers’ goalscoring ability
Grant McCann has full faith in his side’s ability to score goals after being heartened by the attacking performance in the draw at Carlisle United. Rovers failed to find the net at Brunton Park but McCann felt there had been progress on decision-making in the final third following his criticism in the aftermath of the draw against Salford City the previous week. And he remains convinced his players can produce the goalscoring outfit he craves.
McCann said: “There’s not a lot in this division and it’s the ones that have that end quality, that better decision-making, the good moments that are around the top end of the division. We are one of those teams.
“I know that at this moment in time that we’re not so much struggling but finding teams hard to break down. The amount of blocks Carlisle made and the save their keeper made from Kyle Hurst, it just feels like we need
that bit of lady luck and one to go in off someone’s backside and the goals will start raining in again.
“This team can score goals and will score goals, We’ve shown it already this season but what we’ve got to do it keep putting the players into positions.
“We’ve come to Carlisle and had 17 or 18 big chances to score and that is testament to how the team can play and also a message to the boys to keep going.
“It’s coming. I can sense it. I’ll always say I’m disappointed if the team doesn’t create chances and I haven’t said that many times this season.
“We’ve got players who can score goals and there is no question about that. We need to just make sure we get them going and I have a firm belief we will.”
Numerous players found themselves in good positions to threaten the opposition goal and McCann reiterated they all have a licence for attacking freedom.
And he was again pleased with the positive impact
made by his substitutes as Rovers pushed for a winner.
He said: “We said to the players in the changing room and they know us now, particularly the ones that have been here over the two seasons - we go to try to win the game. We tried to do that towards the end, particularly the players coming on, the Ironsides, Gibsons, Sbarras. We wanted to be more positive and more aggressive. If we’re not going to win the game we’ll always try to make an impact from the bench.
“Over recent weeks the lads have made a huge impact coming off the bench. I think back to Barrow with Harry Clifton cutting the ball back for PK to score. We’ve got a really strong group and everyone will need to contribute a some point.
“I’m frustrated and disappointed that we didn’t get the win because we always go for the win in every game. You saw the subs that came on - it was constantly attacking trying to get the goal.”
