£4.115m to boost jobs, homes and ‘Knowledge Gateway’ in Sheffield A multi-million-pound funding boost for Sheffield’s ‘Knowledge Gateway’ from the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is set to transform several prominent streets and spaces in Sheffield City Centre helping to create the setting for 2,863 new jobs and almost 500 new homes, growing the regional economy by an estimated £158million. The LEP is contributing £4.115m in infrastructure funding to transform a major corridor of the city centre running from Paternoster Row in the Cultural Industries Quarter via Pond Street and Pond Hill up to the historic Fitzalan Square. The work, in an area which has significant potential for growth, will bring the Knowledge Gateway up to the same high standard as the Sheffield city centre Gold and Steel Routes. Following the long-awaited renovation of the former head post office in Fitzalan Square as Sheffield Hallam University’s Sheffield Institute of Arts (SIA), Sheffield City Council announced plans earlier this year to upgrade the route from the Edwardianera square along Pond Street to Paternoster Row and Brown Street, the focus of the Cultural Industries Quarter as well as improving connections to the city centre and station. The project aims to help unlock major development opportunities at areas along the route including the site of the former Nelson Mandela building, the former sorting office on Flat Street and the Digital Campus. Fitzalan Square, Sheffield’s main public space in Edwardian times, has become a less-celebrated

location in recent years, cut off from the rest of the city centre and dominated by traffic. Paternoster Row is the main street of the Cultural Industries Quarter, home to the Showroom, Workstation, Site Gallery, Yorkshire Artspace and Sheffield Hallam’s Student Union building, but it is also dominated by fastmoving buses and taxis with little pedestrian space. The work will support development on Sheffield Hallam city centre campus and increase the attractiveness of living and working in the Cultural Industries Quarter. It is due to start next May and will take about a year to complete. The Gateway improves the setting and links between key destinations including the Cultural Industries Quarter, the Digital Campus, and Sheffield Hallam University Central Campus supporting current investment by Hallam in the new Institute of Arts and by the Site Gallery in its new exhibition space. The work will support further development of Sheffield Hallam campus and increase the attractiveness of visiting, living

and working in the Cultural Industries Quarter. It is due to start next May and will take about a year to complete. Sir Nigel Knowles, Chair of the CA’s Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “This is a wonderful scheme which will benefit the whole of the City Region. It will make the corridor a much more pleasant place to use and visit, and even to live in. In turn this will encourage investors and boost jobs and connectivity. “I am delighted that we are backing a scheme which will generate such benefits. The City Region has a strong business culture and we know that an excellent quality of life, which we work hard at, is important to investors and creating growth. “We have an enviable reputation here for getting things done and our strong work ethic reinforces the hard work of our partners across the City Region.” This scheme was made possible by the Sheffield City Region Infrastructure Fund (SCRIF) with assistance from the national Local Growth Fund.

ALBERT SNODGRASS

My girlfriend left me because she couldn’t handle my OCD... I told her to close the door five times on her way out! I walked into my boss’s office & handed him a pear. “What’s this for?” he said “A pay rise, my wife told me to grow it and then ask you”. I was driving on the motorway yesterday in a hearse. Police pulled me over for undertaking. The computers were down at work today, so we had to do everything manually. It took me twenty minutes to shuffle the cards to play solitaire. I once went for a job as a gold prospector, but it didn’t pan out. I used to work in a shoe recycling shop. It was sole destroying. Tried changing my password to “14days” but it was two week. Just got a new job as a waiter. The pay isn’t great, but it puts food on the table. I met this bloke with a didgeridoo and he was playing Dancing Queen on it. I thought, ‘That’s Aboriginal.’ My mum said “There was someone knocking on the door, with a beard!” I said, “No wonder I couldn’t hear him!” I’ll tell you what I love doing more than anything... Trying to pack myself in a small suitcase! I can hardly contain myself. What is the scariest thing to read in braille? “Do not touch.” Accidentally swallowed some Scrabble squares. Next time I go to the toilet could spell trouble!

For the ninth time stars of the comedy world are coming together at the Platinum Suite at Bramall Lane stadium to raise money for the British Red Cross. Headlining the show this year is star of Live at the Apollo and Radio 4 Nathan Caton. Nathan is one of the most exciting young comedians on the scene. Gigging since the tender age of 19, over the last decade he has established himself both as a circuit headliner, and a name on TV and radio. Within his first few years on stage, he had picked up various accolades and coveted plaudits including the Chortle Student Comic of the Year award and Broadcast Hotshot and written and starred in a pilot for Paramount Comedy (now Comedy Central) entitled The Nathan Caton Show. Since then Caton has gone from strength to strength, wowing audiences at comedy clubs up and down the UK, and on his numerous TV and radio appearances, with his delightfully charming blend of personal and political comedy. Other fantastic comedians appearing on the night include Tez Ilyas (The Last Leg, Mock the Week, Tez Talks), Christian Reilly, Tom & Chris Purchase all hosted by Sully O’Sullivan

in the prestigious surroundings of the Platinum Suite at Bramall Lane football ground on Sunday 10th December. There’s table seating, a bar open throughout the show, food available to purchase plus convenient free parking! An exciting night of laughter whilst raising money for an amazing cause that’s Ideal for Christmas parties!

A longstanding volunteer from Sheffield is one of 22 British Red Cross representatives from across the UK who’ll represent the charity in the annual Cenotaph Parade in Whitehall on Remembrance Sunday. Sue Nutbrown has been volunteering for the Red Cross in Yorkshire for over 50 years, providing foundation training for people when they join the charity and supporting its emergency response and refugee support services. On Sunday, Sue will join Red Cross colleagues, along with representatives from other organisations in the Civilian Services Contingent, to form part of a guard of honour around the Cenotaph during the Service of Remembrance. Joining Sue in representing the charity on Remembrance Sunday are two other Yorkshire volunteers, Michael Welsh and Bruno Merieles – both from Leeds, who’ll take part in the ‘march past’ the Cenotaph following the formal ceremony, organised by the Royal British Legion.

The event, led by the Royal family, will be attended by thousands of former servicemen and women, politicians and the general public who gather to remember all who have suffered and died in conflict in the service of their country and all those who mourn them. Sue Nutbrown says: “I’m extremely proud of being a Red Cross volunteer, and it’s a real honour to be able to represent the organisation and its work at such an important national event. I’m really looking forward to joining colleagues to pay our respects and remember those who gave their lives for our country.” Michael Welsh says: “It was important to me to represent the Red Cross at the Remembrance Day event because I was brought up to remember

all those who gave their lives for our country. I make a point to attend a Remembrance event every year, and to be at the event that leads all the others is a very special experience.” The Red Cross movement still plays an important humanitarian role in conflicts around the world providing vital support for refugees; reuniting families torn apart by war, and helping people rebuild their lives when the fighting stops. Across the country, Red Cross staff and volunteers will be taking part in smaller-scale Remembrance Day events in many towns and villages, laying poppy wreaths and observing two minutes of silence to remember those killed or injured during conflict.

HAVE YOU MADE YOUR WILL? GET PAID TO READ!

Will Aid Month starts in November where solicitors will waive their fee and a voluntary donation can be made to a charity. It is important for you to make a will whether or not you consider you have many possessions or much money. It is important to make a will because:• if you die without a will, there are certain rules which dictate how the money, property or possessions should be allocated. This may not be the way that you would have wished your money and possessions to be distributed. • unmarried partners and partners who have not registered a civil partnership cannot inherit from each other unless there is a will, so the death of one partner may create serious financial problems for the remaining partner. • if you have children, you will need to make a will so that arrangements for the children can be made if either one or both

parents die. • it may be possible to reduce the amount of tax payable on the inheritance if advice is taken in advance and a will is made. • if your circumstances have changed, it is important that you make a will to ensure that your money and possessions are distributed according to your wishes. For example, if you have separated and your ex-partner now lives with someone else, you may want to change your will. If you are married or enter into a registered civil partnership, this will make any previous will you have made invalid. If you are in any doubt as to whether or not you should make a will, you should consult a solicitor or a Citizens Advice Bureau who can give you lists of solicitors. Also many charities have will making services.

URGENT CARE REMEMBRANCE CONSULTATION DAY EVENTS NHS Sheffield have talked to thousands of people across the city about urgent care. They’ve found that people find the current system confusing and aren’t always sure where to go to get the care they need. Many people have also told us that they find it hard to get an urgent appointment with their GP or feel they have to wait too long for non-urgent appointments. Combine this with the latest national guidance and it shows that the current arrangements are not good enough for patients, or the NHS. To change this, they want to simplify services and make it as easy as possible for you to get the best care whatever part of the city you live in. They are holding events across the city. Visit the website to find more details of proposed changes and the opportunity to put forward your opinions. www.sheffieldccg.nhs.uk

DO YOU LIVE IN GLEADLESS VALLEY?

Local people are being asked to have their say on a future plan for Gleadless Valley that has the potential to transform the area. Sheffield City Council is consulting with local residents, schools and businesses from early November, after receiving £515,000 from the Government’s Estate Regeneration Programme to develop a local masterplan. The council wants local people to have the opportunity to be involved in the masterplanning process and to share their views. It will spend around a month asking people in and around Gleadless Valley to tell them what they think about all aspects of local life. Postcards giving information about how people can be involved will be sent to more than 5,000 households and council officers will be knocking on doors asking people to complete a residents’ survey. Those living in the area can also complete the survey online at www.sheffield.gov. uk/gleadlessvalley Visit the website for more information and to get involved. The consultation closes on December 3rd 2017.

Military charity Walking With The Wounded (WWTW) is estimating that it will treble the number of ex-servicemen and women it supports in 2018, following a 97% increase last year to more than 1,000. With Christmas fast approaching, for many a time of financial pressure and loneliness, more ex-service personnel than ever require support. “This time last year I was living in the woods. Thanks to WWTW, this Christmas I am in a job and have a roof over my head”, says Richard from Sheffield in Yorkshire who served 4 years as a Trooper in the 13/18th Royal Hussars. This December, Walking With The Wounded is asking Yorkshire to sign up to their Christmas appeal, Walking Home For Christmas, to raise vital funds for those wounded who have little to look forward to this upcoming festive season. The charity hopes to raise a quarter of a million pounds which will enable the charity to change the lives of more than 400 men and women. The campaign is proudly supported by Wolsey, who during World War 1 supplied over 18 million woollen jerseys, scarves and pieces of underwear to the British Armed Forces. Evidence shows that there are still thousands of ex-service personnel like Richard who are struggling or haven’t yet sought the support they require. Walking With The Wounded’s mission is to support all ex-servicemen and women with physical, mental or social injury to gain the skills and qualifications necessary to develop new careers outside the military, re-integrate into society and provide long term security for themselves and their families.

In Richard’s case, he spent 9 months travelling on foot and sleeping rough, having gone through a ‘dark spell’. On returning home to Sheffield, he was living in a ‘basher’ (a military shelter) in the woods for 15 months. WWTW’s criminal justice programme, Project Nova, works in partnership with the South Yorkshire police in order to identify local ex-service men and women within custody and provide them with a range of early intervention services. Project Nova’s aim is to avoid further deterioration in the individuals’ circumstances which could result in them losing their jobs, a breakdown of their relationships or a possible custodial sentence. Andy Sloan, Events Manager at WWTW said: “Too many of our ex-military have little to look forward to this Christmas. They’ve walked in far more dangerous environments for us, so it is the least we can all do to organise a walk for them.” Andy Sloan continues: “We want people to throw on a Santa hat, call up old friends and raise some funds so that we can support these men and women back into work, back into independence and into a place where they can look forward to and enjoy Christmas with their families.” This Christmas, Walking With The Wounded is asking the men and women of Yorkshire to do a walk of any sort between Friday 8th – Sunday 17th December for our wounded ex-servicemen and women, those who without our support could be on the streets, without a job, isolated from their family, in debt or in prison. Richard said: “I am looking forward to spending Christmas with my godson and his family. I’ll be able to buy them presents, something

I never thought possible.” Last year Adam Hugill, a Captain in the Yorkshire Regiment, walked more than 220 miles from Warminster in Wiltshire to his hometown in Beverley, East Yorkshire. Not only did he take on the epic journey alone, but he slept rough along the way. The walk took 10 days to complete and he raised a grand total of £2,363 for our wounded exservicemen and women. In addition to supporting these vulnerable men and women, Rod Eldridge, Clinical Lead at WWTW, reminds us that: “Walking as a form of physical activity is well known to be associated with improving mental health, particularly lowering rates of depression and anxiety across all age groups.” It’s medically proven that people who do regular physical activity have up to a 30% lower risk of depression and up to a 30% lower risk of dementia. Some scientists think that it can improve mental wellbeing because it brings about a sense of greater self-esteem, self-control and the ability to rise to a challenge.2 Thus contributing another reason why WWTW are urging the great British public to get out and about this December, get active and in turn serve those who have served us. For more information, please visit wwtw.org.uk/Christmas.

How to take part: Sign up at wwtw.org.uk/ Christmas Receive your Santa hat and fundraising pack in the post. Set a date and put your best foot forward between Friday 8th - Sunday 17th December.

S. YORKS ROCK LEGENDS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM Saxon aren’t wasting any time in 2018. Following the critically acclaimed release of ‘Battering Ram’ in 2015, the heavy metal giants are set to release their latest studio album, Thunderbolt, on February 2nd via the Militia Guard label (Silver Lining Music). The new album Thunderbolt will feature original Artwork by long time Saxon collaborator Paul Raymond Gregory. “This is album 22 and it’s called Thunderbolt. It’s a Storming Smashing Thundering collection of tracks we’ve been crafting with Producer, Andy Sneap and it’s finished ready to be unleashed. Stand clear and fasten your seat belts!” says Biff Byford Three weeks later, the band will be embarking on the first leg of the Thunderbolt 2018 European Tour. Saxon will be joined by fellow English rockers Diamond Head and metal trio Rock Goddess will be performing on the scheduled UK dates, with very Special Guests Magnum on

the UK Hull date only. However, Saxon doesn’t stop there - dates for Thunderbolt Tour Part 2 will be announced in early 2018. “Ok this is part 1 of the colossal Thunderbolt World tour we’re going to be touring the whole of 2018 so get your tickets and join the ride. It’s gonna be fast and furious, dark and brooding. Monumental riffing and screaming vocals loud and proud it’s going to be a Saxon tour, unique in every way” – Biff Byford Since the 1970s Saxon have shown their ability to take rock ‘n’ roll and give it an electrifying edge which has since cemented their status as pioneers of the British heavy metal wave. With over twenty studio albums under their belt, Saxon has made their steadfast dedication to creating a dynamic body of a work a staple of their career. Full details on the new album and tour can be found at www.saxon747.com

SKINDRED ROCK THE AVENUE Words & Pic by Roy Goodall

EXPECTING a packed house for Welsh wonder boys Skindred I was a tad surprised to find floor space as they’re a major draw on the British rock scene. I’m guessing the £20 plus price ticket might have put a few off. Still, with spirits not dampened and after a lengthy intro tape Chesterfield warmly greeted drummer Arya Goggins, Dan Pugsley and guitarist Mickey Demus, as this popular Newport crew got down to business at the town’s latest indoor venue with frontman Benji Webb strolled on and opened up with Under Attack and Rat Race. The mouth-piece and frontman was in fine voice and as engaging as ever, with one front row punter even throwing him a bible enabling a brief but amusing exchange, much to our amusement. With plenty of audience banter the songs flowed on with their latest album Volume and its

processor Kill The Power getting plenty of plugs, though I did feel Benji could have toned down the vulgarities somewhat. He’s a bright spark so why not show it by communicating in a more professional manner. This is where many a singer lets their band down as all this swearing really isn’t necessary. With the old favourites gushing out and the night almost over another new song, and I believe current single, Machine, really hit the mark, with guitarist Mickey sharing lead vocals with Benji, thus bring the main set to an end. With the excellent Nobody and Warning bringing the night to a final close Benji promised to see us all next year as shortly they’ve a new album to promote. Not the longest of shows, but a good one, with strong support from Sheffielders Sweet Little Machine and Steal The City, two new bands to watch out for. I’m somewhat a late converter to Skindred and yes, some parts aren’t to my taste, but taking the cake as a whole I feel they’re a great band who’ve climbed the ladder the hard way and for me any success they get now is the icing they so richly deserve.

THURSDAY 16TH NOVEMBER

KVELERTAK AT CORPORATION Words & Pic by Roy Goodall Whilst I’ve always believed that strong songs maketh the band it’s also important to get other stuff right too, like the name for example. Kelvertak isn’t easy to get your tongue around so it was with some trepidation that I checked out the live experience at Sheffield’s Corporation. With front row punters telling me how great they were and my surprise at their occupancy of the main room, and this was more than half full, this fiery six piece hit the stage running. With the frontman and vocalist supporting an unusual head mask complete with stuffed wild bird, the pace was fast and heavy which was good though the danger is that some songs can sound similar, but that didn’t seem to bother the masses as they let fly with Apenbaring, Bruane and others to huge Sheffield cheers.

Kvelertak are a Norwegian heavy metal band hailing from Stavanger and were formed in 2007 and comprises vocalist Erlend Hjelvik, guitarists Vidar Landa, Bjarte Lund Rolland and Maciek Ofstad, bassist Marvin Nygaard and drummer Kjetil Gjermundrød. Kvelertak have Norwegian lyrics and their main influences are rock and roll, black metal and punk rock. Although I do have their third offering Nattesferd, most of the eighteen song set was quite alien but to step outside one’s comfort zone is what it’s all about sometimes. And you have to hand it to them, they sure can play. With between song chat kept to a minimum they ploughed on and whilst I felt the band showed energy, spirit, and professionalism I did feel that the mix was slightly off as I could barely decipher frontman Erlend’s words. Maybe that’s just me though. I do like to hear everything and with the brutality of their music stuff does get mixed slightly differently. Still, hats off to Kvelertak. I will be watching out for you in the future.

A packed house was treated to top ‘turns’ which included the Grumbleweeds, comedian Jimmy Carol, Stephanie King and the girls from Elysium and, in true clubland style, bingo. The stars turned out in force to celebrate the launch of Neil Anderson’s new ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Working Men’s Clubs’ book and pay tribute to Bobby Knutt - the South Yorkshire star that rose out of clubland and was set to perform at the event but he tragically died a few weeks ago. Neil Anderson said: “Bobby Knutt was a true professional and he’d have wanted to ensure

the event went ahead.” The Grumbleweeds were a fitting headliner as they were the last act to tour with Bobby. With over four million members frequenting over four thousand clubs across the country, the Working Men’s Club movement permeated every sector of society in the 1970s and helped turned scores of entertainers into household names. The movement was at its most popular around major concentrations of heavy industry – areas of coalmining, steel, car manufacturing etc provided audiences in their tens of thousands. Sheffield and South Yorkshire was a true epi-centre. The book launch event was held at The Walkley (formerly Walkley Working Men’s Club) in Sheffield. The ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Working Men’s Clubs’ is published by www.acmretro.com and is on sale from all good bookshops at £13.95. More information from www.dirtystopouts.com

HAVE A BUTCHERS AT WHAT’S ON OFFER AT BROOMHILL’S LATEST INDEPENDENT EATERY

Review by Dave Platts

Broomhill has always been one of my favourite suburbs of Sheffield to socialise in away from the city centre. Just up from the University lies a small pocket of independent restaurants, bars and shops providing unique, quality alternatives to the big chains you’ll find in town, with many of them championing local suppliers and a more personal ethos. The latest of which being the recently opened Butcher & Catch, which can be found just down from the main crossroads in the middle of Broomhill. Opened at the beginning of October by business partners Adam and Liam Butcher and Catch “was born from a desire to create a space where

the experience is just as important as the food. Where you can come for a cheeky cocktail or a local ale, and stay for a special three course meal.” and as the name suggests their menu is based around a expansive selection of locally sourced and sustainable meat and seafood. Before you even sample any of the food on offer it is obvious that they are true to their word about providing a great space in which to enjoy your visit. Modern, clean fittings combine with large expanses of rustic wood to create a spacious yet comfortable setting, whether your enjoying drinks in the bar area, sauntering past the semi-open kitchen with traditional butchers counter showcasing their cuts of meat & array of Seafood or sitting down for a meal

Junk Yard Theatre is a new theatre company who make their debut here at the Penistone Paramount with their first production of Cats. The company consists of young performers from the age of 10-21 from across the region. Cats The musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber is based on ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’ by T.S. Eliot. The musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make what is known as “the Jellicle choice” and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.

in the glass fronted dining area. The evening menu on offer provided unique takes on the standard fayre with Adam explaining the relatively small selection would be changed regularly to represent the seasonal local offerings. For starters I delved into the Specials board with a Black Pudding & Egg Salad, an ample portion of complimenting flavours that I would more than recommend. My partner also took advantage of the Evening’s specials with a couple of large slices of local Pork

Pie with homemade chutney as another of our party opted for a regular of the main menu with the Crispy Fried Whitebait served with Harissa mayo. For mains we sampled a couple of dishes from the Butcher & Catch signature section - firstly the ‘Bin Lid Burger’, an aptly named combination of Beef brisket, smoked cheese, crispy bacon, fried oyster, brioche cake,

Hendo’s Bourbon BBQ & Catch Tartar. I selected the intriguing ‘Yorkshire’s Finest’, a brilliantly unique dish that featured three Yorkshire Puds filled with Bourbon BBQ beef brisket, smoked trout and horseradish plus chicken & wild mushroom - a meal that perfectly summed up the Butcher & Catch with traditional, local ingredients given a fresh & exotic twist. We spent the rest of the night relaxing in the homely atmosphere sampling local ales

and the wide range of cocktails on offer - and this is the reason I am bringing the review to a close as details from this point onwards get a little sketchy. What I do know though is that I had a wonderful night in a welcoming and refreshing new venue that I’m sure is going to soon rack up a long list of satisfied visitors. LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

As is the custom in the County Senior League the first weekend after the clocks going back brings around the League Cup Second Round. There were a handful of league games also on the menu making a busy autumn weekend of football. Premier Division Millmoor Juniors built on last weeks’ win over Denaby Main, with a 7-0 win over North Gawber Colliery. It is the first time this season Millmoor have registered back-to-back wins, and is enough to carry them out of the bottom two. South Kirkby Colliery claimed three points, with a hard-fought 2-1 home win over Denaby Main. The win lifts South Kirkby into third place, just a point off leaders Grimethorpe Sports. Division One There was just one game in Division One, with Caribbean Sports hosting Brinsworth Whitehill. Brinsworth came out 6-1 winners, with goals from Martin Brissett (2), Andre Redhead, Steven Thompson and Aaron Williamson (2). Division Two New Bohemians inflicted the league leaders Boynton Sports’ second league loss of the season, as they beat them 2-1 at Concord Park. The Bohemians are into sixth position after the win. League Cup 2nd Round Sheffield Bankers Reserves of Division Two claimed the result of the ground, as they defeated Denaby United of the Premier Division at Norton Playing Fields. Joe Tucker was the star of the 4-2 victory for the hosts, as he scored a hat-trick to mark a memorable day for the Bankers. There was a nine goal thriller at Davy Sports club between Frecheville and Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. Ben Furniss scored a hat-trick for Frecheville, but no to be upstaged, Luke Townsend scored all five goals for Stocksbridge in a 5-4 win. Burngreave FC of Division Two, in their first season in the County Senior League also claimed an upset, as they beat Wickersley of Division One 7-0 at Firvale Academy. Penalties were needed to separate Hepworth United and High Green Villa, who were level at 2-2 after 120 minutes. High Green came out victorious as they held their nerve to win an epic penalty shootout 10-9. Premier Division leaders Grimethorpe Sports were made to work hard in their tie with Kiveton Park of Division One, but they came out unscathed in the end with a 5-2 win. Houghton Main’s difficult start to the season was made worse, as they fell to a 8-0 loss to fellow Premier Division outfit Swinton Athletic at Middlecliffe Lane. Daniel Broomhead, Josh Hobson, Joseph Martni (2) and Oliver Warren were all on the score-sheet for Stocksbridge Park Steels Development, as they beat Thurcroft Miners Institute 5-0 at the Thurcroft Hub. Jubilee Sports were in the goals, as they beat Caribbean Sports Reserves 10-0 at Chaucer School. Jordan Livett was once again the main protagonist for Jubilee, with another hat-trick. Daniel Barnsley also scored three. The performance of the round came at Dodworth Miners Welfare, where the hosts beat South Kirkby Colliery Reserves 11-0. Sheffield Medics booked their place in the Third Round, with a 4-1 home win over Maltby Main Reserves. Elsewhere, Charlie Tunnard scored twice to help Premier Division Oughtibridge WMFC past Manor Hotel 3-1. Rogan Green scored the only goal for Houghton Main Reserves, as they beat Silkstone United 1-0. Handsworth Parramore Reserves were 2-0 winners away against Swinton Athletic Reserves. AFC Dronfield were 1-0 winners over Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 at Gosforth Playing Fields.

FRECKLINTON NEARING RETURN Rotherham United captain Lee Frecklington says he is nearing a first team return after rejoining his teammates on the grass at training this morning and hopes he could feature in this weekend’s South Yorkshire derby if called upon by boss Paul Warne. The influential midfielder was sidelined with injury in the early stages of the away clash with Rochdale with initial fears that he had picked up a muscle injury which could have ruled him out for a number of weeks. However, after being examined by the club’s medical staff, the diagnosis was not as bad as first anticipated and Frecklington says he is now well on course for a return to the first-team fold. “Nobody likes missing games and I’m no different,” he told www.themillers.co.uk. “I was back outside on the grass this morning and once you’ve had an injury and you’re back out there you’re not usually far from a return. “Today was the first day back on the grass and I came through it no problem so it’s just whenever the gaffer feels he wants to throw me back in now. “I’ve had muscle problems before and the way it felt [when picking up the injury at Rochdale] with the sharp pain, I feared I’d be out for a while. “Thankfully it’s been something like three weeks or so and I’d have taken that all day long when I first felt that, so I’m happy it’s been less time than I expected.” Frecklington admits he is hoping his return comes in time for this weekend’s all-South Yorkshire affair

at the Keepmoat Stadium, which will mark the start of a tough run of fixtures and see the Millers pit their wits against a number of League One’s leading clubs. “It’s live on Sky as well and it’s a big local derby,” he continued. “There will be a big fan following going there and Darren Ferguson is my old manager, so there’s a lot riding on that game and hopefully I can be in contention and if he [Paul Warne] picks me, I can play. “We said at the start of the season that we’d had some tough games but I think against some of the harder opposition, we’ve done better. “Wigan, Shrewsbury and Blackpool are all coming up so it’s a tough run of fixtures but we need to play them all at some point and we want to win.” The Millers have endured a tough run of results in recent weeks with defeats against Gillingham and Crewe Alexandra in both league and cup competitions but the club’s captain is confident that he and his teammates remain on course to hit their early season ambitions. “I want Rotherham to win whether I’m playing or not. Obviously the last couple of games haven’t gone well, so I’d like to think that I could come back and hopefully make a difference and we can get back to winning games,” Frecklington explained. “I’d say it’s been positive overall. We had ambitions of trying to be in the top 10 and we’re sitting just outside the Play-offs at the moment even after a few disappointing results. “Once we start putting that right and getting a few more consistent results together we can make sure we’re at least in those Play-off positions.”

ROTHERHAM United boss Paul Warne admitted that his side’s FA Cup exit at the hands of Crewe Alexandra was disappointing after a 2-1 defeat at Gresty Road. The Millers looked on course to book their berth in the second round hat after Will Vaulks’ curling effort gave them an interval lead at Gresty Road. However, David Artell’s men turned the tie on its head in the second half when firstly Brad Walker levelled matters with a smart header. With the game heading for a replay at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, Callum Ainley dashed Millers hopes with a late strike which turned the tie in the home side’s favour. Speaking to the assembled press corps afterwards, Warne was quick to express his disappointment, despite being content with the first-half display. “I thought we played really well in the first half and controlled the game. We had enough chances to be out of sight and I thought Joe Newell was outstanding in the first-half,” Warne stated. “We felt pretty comfortable in the game. I don’t think our ‘keeper made a save in the first half.” With the Millers bossing first-half proceedings in Cheshire, Warne’s men seemed to have taken a firm grip on the game on the stroke of half-

33

time, when Kieffer Moore headed home from Joe Newell’s corner, but the referee ordered a re-take of the corner after David Ball was adjudged to have impeded Dave Richards before the set-piece was taken. In hindsight, Warne admitted that the incident was crucial in determining the outcome of the match. “Obviously there was a big turning point on the stroke of half-time. I thought that would have been game over but the referee pulled it back and he said there was a foul before the ball come into the box,” Warne added. “I think that changed the game a little bit. At halftime, I said to the lads that I think that will give them a boost and in the second-half, they came out and had a free header for the equaliser in the middle of our penalty box which was unacceptable. “It was quite an open end-to-end cup tie and I thought we would go on and win it, so for them to score in the manner of their second was difficult to take. “I thought we played more than well enough in the first half to get through. I have been saying all week a nice cup run would be good, but it wasn’t to be. I can’t pretend that I’m anything other than disappointed.”

FERGUSON HAPPY TO PROGRESS Darren Ferguson praised the character shown by his side as Rovers progressed into the second round of the Emirates FA Cup with a 6-2 win over Ebbsfleet United. Rovers were two goals down going into first-half injury time but goals from Tommy Rowe and John Marquis sent them in level at the break, before four second half goals sealed victory at the Kuflink Stadium. Ferguson said: “There were lots of positives to take from the game, we had to show a lot of character to

come from two goals down and get ourselves back in it. “I was impressed that we didn’t change the way we wanted to play, we kept going and added more quality to our play and that’s where the goals came from. “Ebbsfleet caused us some problems with their wide players but we always knew our quality would come through, six goals away from home is always good against any opposition.” Captain James Coppinger grabbed a brace in the win against the National League side, and the manager says goals from midfield are crucial to how he wants his team to play. “The way we play means that we need goals from that area of the pitch, we know that Copps and Rowey will always get goals,” he added. “I was delighted with the way we played as we did a lot of what we’d worked on throughout the week in training. “It’s been a good week for us, we’ve won six games out eight now so we go into the Rotherham game full of confidence.” Rovers return to the Keepmoat Stadium to face local rivals Rotherham United on Saturday November 11, get your tickets from the Club Doncaster Box Office, on 01302 762576, or at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk

COPPINGER PRAISES TEAM MATES Captain James Coppinger was full of praise for his team-mates after they came back from 2-0 to defeat National League side Ebbsfleet United and book their place in the second round of the Emirates FA Cup. Coppinger was influential in the second half turn around and chipped in with two goals, and he was delighted to see his side show great character after going behind. “We had a scare being down two goals in the first half, it would’ve been nice to not have been down at all, but it’s really pleasing, especially after us all taking a bit of criticism recently, to come back and win how we did,” he said. “Their goals knocked us off our stride, but to get two goals right before half time and respond like that it was massive, they were a good side and we made it difficult for ourselves. “Getting those goals gave us a massive wake up call, but it’s great for us to score six goals because after half-time they didn’t really test us, and we always looked like scoring, so it is great to have our name in

the hat for the next round.” Coppinger was also pleased with the way his side stepped up in the second half, and he was quick to point out that the hard work the team have been putting in looks like it is paying off. “We have a very young team, and the way the lads have picked up this new formation so quickly is pleasing to see because the hard work we are putting in on the training ground is starting to show,” he added. “The average age of the squad is about 24, and you take me and Andy Butler out of that and it goes down a lot more, there aren’t many old heads in that dressing room and it is important that they learn quick, but the lads have been different class. “The young lads show promise and they are coming in, working hard and wanting to improve every day, and so what you have in the squad is a group of young lads that want to do well for Doncaster Rovers.”

CLARKE KNOCKS HULL FOR FOUR Leon Clarke scored all four goals as the Blades romped to another Yorkshire derby win. The striker scored all four in the second half as the Blades came from behind to win. Blades boss Wilder made five changes in total with Moore, Wright, Fleck, Duffy and Sharp all starting. Blackman missed out through injury and Baldock failed a fitness test on Friday. Lundstram, Brooks and Donaldson dropped to the bench. There was a nervous early moment in the Hull defence when Tomori missed his kick, trying to cut out Basham’s cross and then a Stevens cross put the visitors under further pressure but McGregor saved from Sharp and Clarke’s penalty claims were ignored. A short spell of pressure for Hull saw Grosicki’s dangerous ball slide across the box and then O’Connell blocked from Bowen and Moore dropped a cross before

atoning by pushing away Larsson’s long-range effort. On 19 minutes the Blades went close to opening the scoring. Duffy got the better of Bowen and provided a great cross for Clarke to win but McGregor made an impressive closerange save. The importance of the save was underlined when Hull netted with their next opportunity, just before the half hour. Irvine nipped in to rob Coutts and the visitors moved the ball quickly through the middle before GROSICKI fired a 30-yarder over the head of Moore. United took a while to regain composure and there was a penalty appeal scare when Wright appeared to handle but from the resulting break, McGregor produced another fine save, tipping over O’Connell’s drive. Another Hull break saw Tomori attack down the left but Grosicki could not connect as well as he

did for the goal and the later stages of the half belonged to the Blades. Bowen headed out from under his own crossbar from Fleck’s cross and the same Hull player deflected a Coutts shot away from the subsequent corner. In the three added minutes, the Blades won a series of corners and from the last, a short, quick effort, Coutts laid off and Duffy sliced wide. United made a blistering start to the second period. Clarke’s header from Fleck’s free-kick was clawed away by McGregor and Stevens, with space in the box, fired over. The leveller, though, arrived on 53 minutes. A patient build up saw Fleck and Coutts both have important touches in the middle of the park before Basham played in the overlapping CarterVickers to deliver to the front post for CLARKE to beat his marker, sliding the ball beyond McGregor. The Blades were clearly

in the ascendancy with the backing of the Kop, but Hull remained a threat on the break and Stevens produced a timely tackle to keep out Campbell. A corner routine on 69 minutes saw Duffy and Fleck link up to present a chance for Clarke but he could only find the sprawling body of McGregor and then Hull broke away quickly with Wright producing a fantastic tackle to stop Tomori. The home momentum continued and there were good chances on

74 and 75 minutes, before lead was grabbed on 76 minutes. Firstly, Clarke and O’Connell combined for Sharp but his effort was blocked by Clark and from the resulting Duffy corner, O’Connell’s power header was wide. But Duffy’s simple pass through the defence saw CLARKE lift the ball over the advancing McGregor into the Kop goal. Soon after, Clarke and United made it three. This time Sharp provided the cross from the left and CLARKE was well-positioned at

the back post to head home. Brooks and then Lundstram were introduced but Clarke was not done. This time Moore’s long clearance was not dealt with by Dawson and CLARKE was again in the right place at the right time to sidefoot beyond the hapless McGregor. There was just one more act for Clarke... to be substituted to a standing ovation in injury-time as the Blades celebrated a famous win.

As well as watching the first team squad train, Lucas had the opportunity to meet his favourite player - Billy Sharp, along with the rest of the team. The players went on to personalise his Blades shirt with their signatures. Sharp, said: "It was a pleasure to meet Lucas. What a brave lad. It makes you realise that you can be positive even if things are really tough. I enjoyed spending time with him and I am glad I was able to help him fulfil one of his wishes." Lucas was accompanied by mum, Louisa, who contacted FreeKicks Foundation to set up the day. She said: "The day was wonderful; the football

team were amazing and made Lucas feel so special, they were completely on his level. "As soon as we got into the car Lucas turned around to me and said, 'Mummy look how many signatures I have on my shirt!'. This is definitely something he will always treasure." Sam Downing, coordinator of FreeKicks Foundation, said: "The children we have worked with at Sheffield United have all been receiving treatments for cancer and have all been so brave and inspirational.

"Originally, we wanted to arrange Lucas to be a mascot for Sheffield United as we have done previously for other children, but this was not possible. "We spoke with Billy Sharp when the Blades played Peterborough last season who put us in contact with the right people to make this day possible and special for Lucas. "All we aim to do is to give children and their families a day where they can temporarily forget real life, and just enjoy their passion football."

UNITED CHASE CONSECUTIVE PROMOTIONS WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH Sheffield United are promotion contenders. This column has heaped plenty of praise on United’s excellent start to the season, and after a second half demolition of Hull City it looks likely that the run will continue. Chris Wilder asked for a response following a disappointing defeat and performance away at QPR. That is what he got, there were no signs of a hangover from his side. The Blades currently sit 2nd in the Championship and have an eight point bumper to 7th place. The prospect of a second successive promotion is beginning to feel more and more realistic. The feeling from the club before the season started was that a consolidation season would suffice this year. There was a significant amount of uncertainty to whether the players could step up

to a division littered with multi-million pound talents. However, it was obvious in interviews that Wilder would not send his team out to make up the numbers. The run between now and January is very important if United are to sustain a promotion challenge. If the team can keep its top six status the club has every chance of attracting some talented players in the January window. Wilder had an excellent transfer window midway through last season, bringing in players to help United over the line. Given more resources to invest in the first team this time around could just lead to more success in May. The period of sitting on the fence is over for myself, although I appreciate that some Blades fans will be more cautious. Norwich City and Southampton have both proved that the double promotion is possible. Sheffield United has a great chance to join the unique club.

WE CAME TO WIN - CARLOS NONE BETTER, Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal was full of praise for a brilliant Wednesday performance as the away side came out 2-1 winners against Aston Villa. Adam Reach’s screamer after 15 seconds set the tone in a dominant first half, before Jordan Rhodes tucked the ball

home after 22 minutes. Chris Samba’s consolation late on for Villa was the only setback in an impressive afternoon for Wednesday. Carvalhal said: “Today we came to combat the dynamic of Aston Villa and we came to win. “We played really very well and the early goal

was very important. “We were very good in the defensive part of the game today as well, we went for 95 minutes very strong before conceding the goal. “Of course I am not happy with the goal we concede, but the performance was very good today. “We did not come here

for a clean sheet, we came here for a win.” Reach’s strike was his third goal in as many games for Wednesday and the Portuguese was full of praise for the winger. He added: “When we bring Adam Reach we know what we get, today he scored a fantastic goal. “He’s English, young, I don’t think there’s many players in the Championship who play with the same intensity as he does. “He covers the most distance, he plays every game and we are very pleased to have him at Sheffield Wednesday.”

NONE QUICKER! Adam Reach stunned Villa Park with a goal of the season contender inside the opening minute to send Wednesday on their way to victory. With only 18 seconds on the clock, Reach’s incredible volley from range flew into the back of the net to hand the Owls a dream start. It was the former Middlesbrough man’s third goal in as many games and the swfc. co.uk October Player of the Month said: “I’ve scored none better and none quicker either! “Before we came out, we said how important it was to start well and to score early if we could. “Nobody thought it would be that early but it put us in a good way for the rest of the game. “We were on the front

foot and could dictate how we wanted to play. “We were disappointed we conceded at the end because we thought our performance merited a clean sheet. But all in all, it was a good day’s work.” Jordan Rhodes made it 2-0 to Wednesday on 23 minutes to put the Owls in a commanding position. Villa pulled a goal back in stoppage time through Chris Samba but the damage had already been done and Wednesday head into the international break after a productive week. And the in-form wideman has certainly enjoyed the recent run, explaining: “It’s just the way football is, when the ball dropped it all happened so quick and there wasn’t anything else in my mind. “I’m not getting ahead of myself, I’m pleased with how I’ve done over the past couple of games personally but as a team we’re performing very well. “We want to keep progressing.”
