HUGE COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS IN DONCASTER THIS WEEKEND For the first time they are turning on the lights in Doncaster on a Saturday and it’s all part of a daylong event that sees entertainment and fun across the entire town centre.

The main stage will be in Sir Nigel Gresley Square, outside Cast and will feature the usual switch on activities hosted by Trax FM. The square will also have refreshments including free hot chestnuts and there will be a selection of food and drinks stalls and traditional chalets with attractions

including Brodsworth Hall and the Tourist Information Team with Doncaster related gifts on sale.

You’ll be able to watch the stage whilst children have photos taken in the free Snow Globe and then enjoy the fun of the fairground rides gathered in the area around the stage.

You’ll even be able to enjoy a glass of mulled wine to keep warm and get into the Christmas spirit.

The stage line-up includes something for all the family from Mickey and Minnie’s Disney Christmas to a whole host of

Disney Princesses, culminating in a full Frozen set complete with snow! They have Donny the Dog and Panto Characters galore as well as characters in the square for your photos and meet and greet opportunities.

There’ll be music too with Doncaster Council Choir as well as local performer Alexandra Parker violinist.

Closing the show are Britain’s Got Talent finalists - Doncaster’s own Pensionalities.

WOMEN OF STEEL STATUE SCOOPS NATIONAL AWARD Sheffield’s brilliant Women of Steel have gone national!

celebrated again last week as critically acclaimed sculptor Martin Jennings picked up a national award for the public sculpture he

created in their honour.

Martin’s Women of Steel statue, which was installed in Barker’s Pool, Sheffield in June 2016, won the PMSA (Public Monuments and Sculpture Association) Marsh award for Excellence in Public Sculpture at an awards ceremony in London yesterday.

The statue was installed in honour of all the women who worked bravely and tirelessly to keep England going during two world wars. With most of the

working age men away at war, the manufacturing at steel works and factories in Sheffield and the surrounding areas was more important than ever.

This was the historic time when Sheffield’s ‘Women of Steel’ came into their own and women from all over South Yorkshire, some as young as 14, were conscripted to work in steel works all over the region.

Following a campaign launched by Sheffield City Council, and spearheaded

by four determined Women of Steel; Kathleen Roberts, Ruby Gascoigne, Dorothy Slingsby and Kit Sollitt, to create a lasting memorial, more than £150,000 was donated by members of the public.

On 17 June 2016 around 3,000 people turned out in person to honour the women at the statue unveiling ceremony. The Women of Steel statue stands proudly in Barker’s Pool, Sheffield as a lasting reminder and thank you.

Woman of Steel and campaigner, Kathleen Roberts said: “I think it’s absolutely marvellous, I’m speechless. For our statue to receive this award it makes the hard graft we did all those years ago and our efforts to raise money for the memorial even more worthwhile.

“On behalf of all the Women of Steel I am proud and delighted.”

PUPPET PARADE BRINGS REINDEER MAGIC TO MEADOWHALL THIS CHRISTMAS Christmas comes to life at Meadowhall this year, as a bespoke theatrical experience comes to the centre especially for the festive period.

For the first time ever, a family of incredibly realistic reindeer puppets, brought to life by the Associate Director and Associate Puppetry Director of Warhorse, will parade through

the centre led by Santa Claus himself.

With breath-taking natural movements and reindeer sounds, these astonishingly lifelike creatures, spanning seven foot in height, will come alive, delighting shoppers with their own personalities.

The friendly reindeer will journey through the centre, stopping to allow visitors to interact, take photos and make memories to treasure forever. Shoppers need to watch out for Rascal, the baby reindeer; he’s still in training and quite mischievous!

A team of highly trained puppeteers and actors will control and lead the spellbinding reindeer family as they make their immersive journey through the centre.

Andy Brunksill, director at Brunskill and Grimes has produced the show alongside puppet maker Jimmy Grimes, he explains: “We pride ourselves on creating incredible experiences with puppets and people, really pushing puppetry to new heights. What we’ve created for Meadowhall is truly unique and a real first. It all started by looking at real

The imaginative event will run for four

ARE YOU WALKING FOR HEALTH IN SHEFFIELD?

Getting active can be difficult but Step Out Sheffield is here to help.

With the walking for health scheme you can take part in free short walks near where you live.

Step Out Sheffield started in 1999 as a pilot scheme between the Ranger Service and the Medical Centre. People with various medical conditions were given ‘prescriptions’ for a weekly walk by Rangers trained by Walking for Health.

There are now walks at 25 locations across the city each week and most venues offer a choice of walks to cover all levels of ability. Walks run throughout the year, we do not stop for school holidays and,

like all health walks, our walks, which are accredited by Walking for Health, are free.

Our walks are open to all, you don’t need a medical condition in order to join one.

Socializing is as important as the exercise.

Come along and meet new friends.

Walks typically last from 30 minutes to an hour. If you can’t manage to walk for 30 minutes initially, don’t worry. We’ll start where you are at and help you progress week by week. 125 trained walk leaders volunteer across the 25 weekly walks on the Sheffield scheme, some volunteering two or three times every week. These volunteers help make the walks enjoyable and keep the walkers safe.

Step out Sheffield is one of the biggest health walk schemes in the country and we ARE the biggest Completely self managed scheme. If you would like to take part all you have to do is come along to the start point of one of the walks a few minutes early and one of the trained leaders will take your details.

You can join as many walks as you like as often as you like.

Sheffield Archives is home to thousands of records and memories of Sheffield past and present and now copies of more than 1,200 pieces from the collection are available to buy.

The shop features some of the best images from Picture Sheffield, maps of Sheffield from the 17th century through to street scenes in the 21st century, vintage posters and adverts and even images from the Great Flood of 1864.

Customers can buy framed fine art prints, posters, greetings cards, mugs and coasters, cushions, mouse mats, jigsaws and more all of which can be customised to show a great Sheffield Archives image.

Over the coming months many more items will be added to the shop from the archives collection.

All sales from the archives shop will go back in to supporting Sheffield’s Libraries and Archives service.

Yorkshire and the Humber Police Forces are holding a regional weapons surrender from Monday, 13 to Sunday 26 November, and anyone who is in possession of a gun, knife or any type of weapon is urged to take advantage of the surrender and safely dispose of the items.

South, West and North Yorkshire, as well as Humberside, will accept any weapon during the two-week period at a number of police stations.

Weapons can include but are not limited to, air weapons, BB guns, handguns, antique firearms, imitation firearms, ammunition, knives, samurai swords, machetes, switchblades and daggers. At the point of surrender, you will not face prosecution for possession of the weapon, which ordinarily carries a minimum five-year sentence for possession of a firearm and up to fouryears for possession of a knife.

All the weapons surrendered will be forensically examined, and if they are found to have been used in previous criminality, an investigation will be launched.

The regional initiative is an extension to the National NABIS firearms surrender, which is taking place across the UK during the same two weeks.

The aim of the surrenders is to avoid weapons getting into the wrong hands and

being used in crime, and provide members of the community with a safe place to dispose of them.

Armed Criminality lead for South Yorkshire Police, Detective Superintendent Una Jennings said: “Weapons do not recognise boundaries, which makes the national firearms and regional weapons surrender this month an ideal opportunity for people to anonymously hand in any guns, ammunition, knives and bladed articles.

“While we know individuals already involved in criminality will be unlikely to hand in any weapons, there will be people who will have been passed down an antique firearm by a family member, or have items such as samurai swords that may have previously been used for decoration in the home, and they are now no longer wanted.

“The surrender provides the perfect opportunity to safely dispose of these weapons and to prevent them from ending up on the streets and falling into criminals hands, which only brings destruction and devastation to our communities.”

Det Supt Jennings added: “While South Yorkshire has seen an increase in the possession and use of weapons, as is the picture nationally, there are a vast array of both overt and covert operations already in progress across our county.

“I want to make it

very clear that the use of weapons in South Yorkshire will not be tolerated and I’d urge you to please think of the life changing consequences just carrying a weapon can have.

“I would strongly encourage people to please take advantage of the surrender and hand in any weapon that is unwanted or illegally owned; every gun and knife given up is one less that can end up in criminal circulation, and can potentially save a life.”

SHEFFIELD COUNCIL AND BUS PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCE CHRISTMAS TRAVEL DEALS Experiencing Sheffield at Christmas looks set to be the best – and cheapest – yet with offers to get into the city centre announced for cars and buses.

The festive bus offer Plus One means anyone with a day, week or month ticket can bring along another person for free on journeys in Sheffield into the city centre after 4.30pm and out of the city centre after 6.30pm on Thursdays and all day on Sundays in December in the run up to Christmas.

Even if both people travelling don’t usually use the bus when one person buys a day bus ticket the second person will travel for free as the Plus One – so 2 for 1 travel.

Councillor Jack Scott, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Transport, said: “I’m delighted to be able to announce this early Christmas present for festive visitors. Christmas in Sheffield traditionally starts with the Christmas lights switch-on and this will make that event even more popular.

BUSINESS LEADERS SWAP THE BOARDROOM FOR PUNCHLINES IN AID OF WESTON PARK CANCER CHARITY

Funny Business will see some of Sheffield City Region’s top business professionals step into the spotlight, on Thursday 30th November at Sheffield City Hall, to raise money for Weston Park Hospital – the region’s only specialist cancer hospital.

With no previous standup experience, wannabe comedians taking to the stage include charity trustees Kash Purohit (Consultant Clinical Oncologist, Weston Park Hospital) and Niall Baker (Regional Managing Partner, Irwin Mitchell). They will

be joined by Philippa Sanderson (Head of South Yorkshire Region, KPMG), Ian Hobson (Managing Director, Cascade Water Systems), Ollie Hart (GP, Sloan Medical Centre), Richard Pinfold (Marketing Director, Meadowhall) and Melinda Schofield (Sales Director, Bauer Hallam FM).

The event, organised

by Weston Park Cancer Charity, will see each participant undergo an intense training programme over a five week period. Under the guidance of BBC Radio 4’s ‘It’s a Fair Cop’, Alfie Moore, they will

learn the tricks of the trade, techniques and skills to perform a five minute stand-up comedy routine in front of a live audience and a panel of judges.

Tina Harrison, Deputy Director at Weston Park Cancer Charity said: “We’re so excited that Funny Business is set to return to the stage again this year and it’s great to see that business leaders across the region continue to support the charity and this fantastic event.

It’s a hugely enjoyable night out and one of the hardest challenges our contestants will face. We

can’t wait to see what punchlines they will deliver whilst raising vital funds to support Weston Park Hospital.”

Money raised from the event will help create a better life for people living with and beyond cancer giving patients from across the region access to the very best cancer care services.

Funding enhancements which are unavailable on the NHS, Weston Park Cancer Charity provides practical help to those in need, emotional support and enhanced cared.

I do try and help other anglers out. I’m happy to help with either advice, or a demonstration, in the hope that my experience, and limited knowledge, may just help them on their way to angling enjoyment. I do it because it gives me pleasure, and I do it because I remember, that once, a long time ago, other people did it for me…

I went to the local club AGM this week. It’s always interesting to see what is going on behind the scenes in your angling club, after all, you can’t really moan about decisions taken if you weren’t there to vote, so it’s worth going. I don’t envy the club officials and committee, it’s a thankless task, and you can’t please all of the people all of the time, but they do a fine job… most of the time!

What I was most pleased about however, was to run into a gentleman who inspired me to maintain my fledgling interest in angling, my former science teacher, Geoff Beckett. There have been several people who helped mould my fishing, but Geoff is one man who really sticks in my mind. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be forever grateful to my dad, a non-angler, who, under great pressure, took me up to the local cement works lagoons (where he had just finished work) for a few hours on summer evenings.

I think that in truth, he hoped I’d lose interest, as he hated returning from whence he had just spent the day toiling amongst cement dust, but I didn’t, and several other gentlemen helped in my formative years, and I owe them a drink!

My local club was small, with only a couple of waters, and frequented by anglers who fished the same peg, for the same fish, on the same day of the week, but they were happy, and knew the waters inside out. As I progressed, Alec Hollins was the first to step in with a glut of knowledge that my non-angling dad, as expected, just didn’t have.

Alec explained the mysteries of plumbing the depth, shotting a float, and how to properly connect with infrequent bites (my first perch flew over my shoulder after a particularly hefty strike!) amongst other things. Alec would sit for a while beside us, and gently correct me until I became able to tackle up, and catch fish on my own, safely, with a bit of consistency, and without falling in!

Eventually, the time came to fish the Juvenile Cup. A junior aggregate series, held on summer evenings, with usually around ten budding young anglers, but competition was fierce! Alec coached his protégé son Dave, Dave McKay hovered over his charge Gavin, cousin Stephen fished, but kept his secrets, and several other dads, whose names now sadly escape me, all gave hints and tips throughout the contests.

As a 12 year old, occasionally, I won, indeed some years later won the series too, and was grateful to receive a fine trophy, but remember one match particularly. I drew peg 9, a favourite, and fished maggot to amass a reasonable total, but seconds before the ‘All Out’ sounded, my float disappeared, and I hooked a solid lump which fought back considerably harder than anything else that night!

My 11’ Woolies float rod took on a fine curve, and for twenty minutes, guided by older, wiser anglers, I tried in vain to lift the leviathan from the lake bed, my size 20 hook and 2lb hook length straining against the unseen fish, until, eventually, they parted!

I was gutted, as were the spectators, who walked back to their peg ready for the weigh in, whilst realising that the lost fish would have won both the match, and probably the Specimen Cup! Despite that loss, later successes followed, and I was then asked to fish for the club in a junior match at JCB Works in nearby Rocester, which brings me to remember Stuart Whiston…

The match took place on a blisteringly hot August day, on South Lake, and I was seated on peg 3, in the shade of a mighty willow. The fish were just not interested, a fly hatch had bloomed, and the hot, sunny weather had put all but the smallest fish off the feed. Experienced angler Stuart sat behind me, offering ideas, but in a gentle way which made me think they were my own! As the match progressed, fishless, between us, (Stuart mainly) we picked up the dice for a final throw, and fished a single maggot, up in the water, in an effort to at least weigh something in. I caught 22 tiny roach, for a total weight of 8 ¼oz; stunningly, enough for third place, and my first ever trophy! I have Stuart to thank for that one, a prize which set me on the way to further trophies, including one almost as big as me, when we fished another team match at Hales Hall Fishery. As

Captain, I can’t remember what I caught, or what the totals were, but by God, that was a big trophy, and came about as Stuart maintained patrol, advising us what to try next!

So, back to Geoff. I was a reasonably keen pupil at Middle School, and Mr. Beckett was certainly a favourite teacher, imparting his knowledge of science with booming laughter and a ready smile. I was even more enamoured, when I found that he too was an avid angler, and he would often regale our class with fishy tales between experiments. Imagine my delight, when he suggested a fly tying club at lunchtimes! He supplied the jigs, materials, and whatever else was required, and a few of us (Steve, Damon, Malcolm and I are the ones I can recall) sat as he created masterpieces with feathers, braids and silks, which we tried to copy. In truth, I couldn’t make a competent fly then, and I still can’t now, but I do understand some scientific theory! It wasn’t about the flies though, it was the fact that Geoff took a genuine interest in pushing our angling, and helping us improve our knowledge.

Mr. Beckett eventually suggested a school fishing trip, utilising the school minibus, a rickety Ford Transit, in which we would all pile in, and he would take us to one of the club waters where we would fish under his tutelage. Unbelievably, the club water was famed north western Mecca Capesthorne Hall, and we were to fish within the hallowed boundaries, home to massive carp, and shoals of bream! Unfortunately, for some reason, I was unable to go; I think I was unable to raise the required fee from my pocket money, and was despondent when I reported thus… I really didn’t want to miss this trip, and it must have showed, because Geoff told me not to worry, he would sort it… and he did, seeking permission from my mum, and then chipping in the cash from his own pocket (£2.50 I think) to ensure I didn’t miss out! Brilliant!

Our day at Capesthorne came, and we all trooped excitedly across the arched bridge to try and catch something from this beautiful venue. After a few hours of scorching sunshine, flitting between rhododendron surrounded pegs, but with very little to show for it, Mr. Beckett told us to pack up, and we headed for the stock pond; Geoff was determined that we would all catch a fish! And we did. I sat next to a bed of lilies, the tea coloured water fizzing with bubbles from feeding fish, and my float disappeared repeatedly as fish after fish snapped up the maggot and sweetcorn baits! By the end of the day, I’d caught exactly 51 carp, none bigger than a few ounces, but all immaculately scaled, and capable of giving my tackle a thorough work out. Like the other lads, I was sunburnt, tired, hungry after scoffing all of my beef spread sandwiches, Blue Riband chocolate wafers, and ‘Salt ‘n Shake’ crisps on the journey there, but blissfully happy to have enjoyed such a day…and it’s one I’ve never forgotten, many years later!

Now, years later, my dad still hates fishing, failing to see the point of it, Stuart has sadly passed away, Alec continues to deal with a serious illness which has affected his fishing, and Geoff soldiers on, again after illness, and is still on the committee at the same club where he took us around 34 years ago. I make a point of telling him when I see him that I’m grateful for his interest in me as a young angler, but I can tell he doesn’t really believe me, but I am, and I hope that one day, other anglers may just remember a time when I helped them, and then pass on that memory to help others enjoy it too; after all, angling is about memories, and thanks to dad, Alec, Stuart and Geoff, I’ve got some smashing ones… thank you, and I really do mean that…

LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

Week 13 was a short week in the County Senior League. With most of the league’s teams involved in County cup action, there were just four league games spread across the league’s three divisions.

Premier Division Grimethorpe Sports had the opportunity to move three points clear atop the Premier Division on Saturday, with a win against Denaby United. They took their chance with both hands, winning 10-2 at Sheerien Park. Grimethorpe are the only unbeaten side in the Premier Division, with an impressive seven wins from their opening nine games.

There was a big game at the bottom of the Premier Division with third bottom Houghton Main hosting bottom side Denaby Main at Middlecliffe Lane.

Goals from Jordan Portman and Adam Wright were enough to give Houghton Main the three points, with a 2-1 victory.

Division One A brace from Luke Chestney helped inspire Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves to a 3-0 away win over Sheffield Bankers. Luke Pickering completed the score-sheet for Hemsworth who move into third position in the table with the win.

Division Two Rob Gibson scored the only goal for New Bohemians, as they beat Working Wonders 1-0 at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium in Cudworth. The win follows a win last time out against league leaders Boynton Sports, and carries them into fifth place in the table.

MILLERS TO MARK REMEMBRANCE DAY AT SATURDAY’S GAME

Rotherham United will pay their respects to fallen service men and women with a minute’s silence at this weekend’s Sky Bet League one game against Shrewsbury Town.

The home clash with Paul Hurst’s side marks the Millers’ closest home game to Remembrance Sunday and we are once again asking all fans to join us in paying our respects this weekend.

We are delighted to be welcoming the City of Sheffield Pipe Band, who will be performing prematch. Founded in 1908, the band has a proud history and has performed all over the world which included in France last year, where they were asked to help mark the 100th anniversary of

the Battle of the Somme.

As well as the band, we will have a bugle player at AESSEAL New York Stadium, who will lead us into and through the minute’s silence with a rendition of The Last Post.

Members of the Rotherham MCVC will be in attendance outside the stadium from 1pm.

The MCVC is a group that runs weekly and fortnightly meetings where the veterans of Rotherham and its surrounding areas can get together to share their stories and discuss aspects of their day to day lives. The groups provide support to those that have served our country and are struggling to readapt to civilian life.

Also at Saturday’s game we will have two men in our company who served on board the HMS Intrepid during the Falklands War. We would like to extend a warm welcome to Neil Wilkinson and Michael Quinn, who will both be attending at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Rotherham United Head of Community Jamie Noble said: “I’d like to thank everyone that is getting involved as we pay tribute to the fallen service men and women at this time of year.

“It is an extremely important time where we acknowledge the great sacrifice made by those working in the armed forces. Nearly everyone has a personal story of being affected by past wars and conflicts, so to come together as a community to remember the fallen is a very fitting tribute.”

Rotherham United boss Paul Warne praised his team’s togetherness as they grabbed a well-earned draw from the jaws of defeat at the expense of local rivals Doncaster Rovers, thanks to Kieffer Moore’s 13th goal of the season.

The home side looked on course to earn the South Yorkshire bragging rights after Richard Wood put through his own net, mid-way through the secondhalf, after earlier crashing a point-blank header against the bar.

With Semi Ajayi and sub Jonson Clarke-Harris also smashing efforts against the woodwork, the Millers were poised to make the short hop down the M18 empty-handed until Moore popped up late on to earn a share of the spoils - to the delight of the Rotherham supremo.

“I thought it was a typical derby game,” Warne admitted.

“Both teams were quite nervous. We were not as good in possession as I would have liked.

“I thought we were the better team in the first-half and created the better chances. They had a good 15 minute spell in the second half where they controlled the game.

“However, we changed our system and went three up top. I threw the kitchen sink at them so to score so late on feels like a win so I’m pretty pleased.

and sometimes you don’t, I think today we got what we deserved. We more than merited a point with our performance.”

With the clock ticking down on the Millers hopes, the vast travelling contingent were sent delirious when sub David Ball skipped through to latch onto fellow sub Richie Towell’s defence-splitting pass and although the former Fleetwood striker was denied by home ‘keeper Ian Lawlor, Moore was on-hand to slide the ball home at the second attempt.

Speaking to the assembled press corps afterwards, Warne was quick to hail the cool hand precision of his in-form striker, who kept his composure to level matters.

“Despite the last 10 minutes being scrappy, the players kept going and when it dropped to Bally, I thought here we go.” Warne added.

“It dropped to Kieffer. He has done well for us and it was the most ideal player for the ball to drop to.

Goalscorers score goals and it fell to him at the right time.

“I thought we had enough chances to get something out of the game. To get a point away at your local rivals, in this way, is a good feeling and we now have a couple of home games to look forward to.”

James Coppinger reckons his team-mates deserve a lot of credit for his longevity after chalking off his 550th competitive appearance for Rovers in the draw with Rotherham.

It was yet another landmark for a player who has reached so many for the club, and he credits the squad built by manager Darren Ferguson for helping him keep going.

He said: “We’ve got such a good group, who all want to do well. If I didn’t have that then I would struggle. I love what I do, which is why I’ve played for as long as I have.

“I take it a season at a time, to get to 37, as I

will be in January, and still playing 40 games a season is something I am over the moon about.

I take it game by game, I know that’s a cliche but it’s the only way I can do it - and I’d love to go on and reach 600.”

Coppinger’s 550th game for Rovers fell on derby day, and the captain thanked the supporters for their backing in the game.

He added: “It makes a big difference, matches with these atmospheres are the ones you want to play in.

“It definitely makes a difference, and I thought our fans were superb throughout the game.”

FERGUSON PROUD OF DERBY DISPLAY Darren Ferguson felt his Rovers side put on a display supporters could be proud of in the South Yorkshire derby with Rotherham United.

Rovers had to settle for a point after the Millers levelled in the sixth minute of time added on, but Ferguson felt his side had played well.

He said: “I was encouraged by the performance of my team and the determination showed to try and win a derby match.

“I thought the performance as a whole was a good one, but the lads are gutted as it was a real body blow to concede when we did. We

looked a real threat counter attacking them, but we were unlucky with the goal we conceded and can feel unfortunate not to have won the game.”

With well over 12,000 in the stadium, Ferguson felt the home supporters really helped the home side.

He added: “In terms of atmosphere it was probably the best while I’ve been here. The fans were outstanding and really spurred us on - especially when we were 1-0 up.

“We’ve got a little bit of momentum at the moment, we can go into the next few games with real confidence.”

JAKE EASTWOOD SIGNS NEW DEAL Goalkeeper Jake Eastwood has signed a new long-term Blades deal.

The 21-year-old prospect, who has progressed through the ranks at the SteelPhalt Academy, is tied to the club until 2020.

“We have a number of very good goalkeepers on our books and Jake is one of them,” said boss Chris Wilder. “He works tremendously hard with (coach) Darren Ward and the goalkeepers and has had a taste of senior action in the cup. We

see plenty of potential in Jake and hopefully he fulfils it.”

Eastwood impressed in pre-season and played in the Carabao Cup ties against Walsall and Leicester, as well as featuring as the substitute goalkeeper in the Sky Bet Championship on a number of occasions this season, including Saturday’s victory over Hull City.

He said: “I’m delighted to sign a new contract, it’s a proud day for my family and myself.

United is a great club for a young goalkeeper, the coaching is excellent, especially working with Darren Ward, who has contributed massively in my development since I was 14. Working with Simon (Moore) and Jamal (Blackman) and a squad of players who are pushing each other every day is a great environment to learn your trade.”

Eastwood follows fellow youngster David Brooks, who also signed a new long-term deal recently.

HIGH TEMPO FOR U23s Wednesday Under23s manager Neil Thompson praised the high tempo at which the Owls operated in the second half during the 2-0 victory over Huddersfield.

The home win extended Wednesday’s fine start to the season following last term’s title triumph.

Thompson said: “It was

a bit cat and mouse at the start, there were few chances, but we got one and we took it.

“The second half was much better from us, playing at a high tempo and we got the second goal.

“It was a good win, and to be winning games is great, but it’s more about the performance and the

players’ development.”

The Owls played a young side against the Terriers, with no senior players in the squad, and Thompson believes it is important for the Under 23s to hold their own.

He added: “Against Sheffield United we had some of the experienced players with us, for this game the shoe was on the other foot as our team was all younger lads and they had a couple of first teamers.

“It’s good for the younger players to line up alongside the experienced pros, but it’s also good for them to stand on their own two feet and see what they can do.”

NUHIU INSPIRES LANDMARK KOSOVO VICTORY Atdhe Nuhiu made a late substitute appearance on Monday and played a key role in Kosovo’s landmark victory over Latvia.
