CUE BALL EVENT HELPS LOCAL CHARITIES Plans are gearing up for the seventh annual Sheffield Cue Ball Proceeds will be donated to local charity Neurocare, raising money to help those with neurological conditions in the Royal Hallamshire hospital. Cue Ball marks the launch of the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield and has raised around £125,000 for local charities since 2004. The charity event, to be held on Friday 16 April, is again supported by sponsors Kier Sheffield and Interserve, as well as a strong guest list from key Sheffield organisations. Cue Ball is also

delighted to welcome Capita as a sponsor for the first time this year. Cllr Paul Scriven, Leader of the Council said: “Cue Ball is an important event in Sheffield’s business calendar, it creates a real buzz for the start of the tournament. This is a great way to celebrate the arrival of the World Snooker Championships and a fantastic opportunity for Sheffield’s business community to network and also raise money for charities and good causes in Sheffield. We’d like to say a big thank you to the local

businesses and everyone who contributes to this charity event.” Guests will be treated to a champagne and jazz reception in Sheffield’s spectacular Winter Garden on arrival, followed by an exquisite four course dinner in Mercure St Paul’s Hotel. The event will be hosted by snooker MC Rob Walker. There will be a charity raffle and auction in aid of Neurocare, and live music from local band Sharp Cuts. Emma Douglas, Fundraiser at Neurocare, said: “Cue Ball is such a prestigious event in

Sheffield’s calendar and we’re delighted to be involved in raising funds. It’s a great opportunity to raise awareness about the fund-raising work we do for patients with a range of neurological conditions”. Terry Boynes, Partnership Director at Capita said: “We are really proud to be part of Cue Ball for the first time and look forward to a great event on the 16 April“ and Chris Hale, Divisional Director at Interserve stated that he was “Delighted to be supporting a local charity through Cue Ball

again this year.” Simon Bullen, Kier Building Maintenance Regional Director, added: “As one of the original sponsors we are pleased to have the opportunity to continue supporting this prestigious event and help raise much needed funds for charities.” Auction and raffle

prizes will offer people exclusive or money can’t buy experiences, including a four-day driving experience in the new MercedesBenz E-Class Cabriolet including fuel and insurance, a dinner party for eight cooked by Mercure’s top chef, A Reverend and the Makers signed guitar

and a commissioned piece by a Yorkshire Watercolourist Les Packham MBE. There are a few tables still available for the event.

FREEDOM2CHOOSE Severely troubled times lay ahead folks - that is, if you all sit back and allow it to happen. Yesterday saw the start of the government propaganda machine extolling the ‘glorious success’ of the smokeban experiment.

Glorious success? We are now on the way to 5,000 venues being closed down for good, courtesy of this spiteful, restrictive & socially devastating ban. The health minister, Gillian Merron MP (Lincoln) has publicly stated, during a health committee debate, that the ban is an overwhelming success. This is despite the fact that on 11th December (2008) Chancellor Alistair Darling has admitted the smoking ban is forcing pubs out of business! This is despite a good number of pubs & clubs getting rate-reviews to help them out. This is despite the fact that beer sales are down by 1.7 million pints per day. Do you not see what is happening here? This is the first step, by this government, in the brainwashing strategy leading up to the ban review in July of this year. They have decided that 80% of the ‘people’ want the ban to stay. Note here they quote ‘the people’-what people? Have you been asked, or you, or even YOU? Nobody is asked, save for their own overpaid minions who work for ‘Smokefree North East, NW, Liverpool etc. In other words all these ‘people surveys’ are conducted within their own anti smoking ranks-hence the 96,000 replies to the ‘public consultation of 2006 which ultimately led to the smokeban! Freedom2choose surveyed approximately 2,600 pubs & clubs in 2007 to gauge reactions to the newly implemented ban-don’t forget the ban was implemented during the summer months thus standing outside in the warmer climate bothered no-one. A re-run of this survey 30 months

later has given a completely different reading as licensees find it ever more difficult to maintain an income, if, in some cases, it can even be called an income! 82% want the simple option of choice-a total contradiction to government figures. 64% wanted either smoking rooms and/or ventilation. 82.4% stated that the total cost (to taxpayers [you & me!] has not been justified. Now these are real people in real pubs & clubs with, wait for it, real opinions on how THEY should be allowed to run THEIR businesses. How much longer are YOU going to sit back and let this government (or any other for that matter) dictate how you should slowly go skint and be forced out of business? Have you noticed that the rest of Europe is now seeing their bans crumbling because of the economic disasters being caused? The French basically ignore theirs. The Spanish similar as they want as much tourism as they possibly can. The Dutch have overturned their ban through the simple expediency of solidarity. The Germans have ripped theirs apart in their Constitutional Courts. The Croatians have overturned theirs and the Czechs have simply refused to entertain the smokeban for they have watched the financial disaster unfolding elsewhere. Britain & Ireland are the only 2 countries with Draconian measures that instantly kill businesses and the European people, now knowing the truth instead of the ‘drip fed’ bilge that emanates from Westminster via the media simply cannot understand why all our licensees are not uniting and fighting this destructive smokeban which is simply a part of the greatest social engineering programme we are ever likely to see.

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE - ISSUE 29 The end of the first ice hockey season is nigh. This week was the penultimate commentary game on Radio Nightingale. Saturday evening brought bottom of the league Hull Stingrays to the Sheffield Arena. There was a slight swap on our line-up for coverage but they stayed the distance right through into sudden-death overtime. After the regulation three periods of play the Steelers were level with their opponents at 2-2 but it was the Stingrays that came away with the victory with that all important goal in overtime. Next week is the last of the league action that we’ll be covering on Radio Nightingale, and what a way to finish with another visit of

the Nottingham Panthers. This week we received a donation of £250 from the Charlotte Marshall Charitable Trust towards some new equipment for our studio. This particular trust have supported Radio Nightingale for a number of years and we are always grateful for their contributions. There’s still time to register for our Challenge 2010, our sponsored run or walk over either 4km or 10km in June. In association with the Foundation for Social Improvement we are looking for people to raise money for Radio Nightingale by taking part in Challenge 2010. The event is a sponsored walk or run over two distances, either 4km or 10km taking in the fantastic scenery of Derbyshire. The event takes place on Saturday 5 June 2010 finishing at Thornbridge Hall with a BBQ and drinks. There’s no entrance fee or minimum sponsorship level but places are limited so if you are interested in taking part in

this fantastic fundraising opportunity, please get in touch with us as soon as possible either by telephone on 01709 304244 or by email to info@ radionightingale.org.uk to register your interest so that you can start collecting your sponsors. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. An Open Mind A weekly column written by International Medium, Author & Visionary Joanne Gregory

ST. PATRICKS DAY AND THE MELTING POT!

I would say that I’m fairly patriotic, I’ve donned my England Rugby shirt over the last few weeks, wishing England would win the six nations tournament. I would say that I’m English through and through. Yet, at this years Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations, known as Lá Fhéile Pádraig in Ireland, I’m going to be partying with the best of them. Saint Patrick (circa AD 387–493) is the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. The day began as a purely Christian holiday and became an official feast day in the early 1600s. However, it has gradually become more of a secular celebration of Ireland’s culture. Some may say any excuse for a party, but one thing I have learned if there is anything that brings people together it is a mutual respect for their culture. Obviously some of the people I will be celebrating with are Irish, but one of my friends is Scottish, one is of German parentage and there are a couple of us Brits. We are a true melting pot of cultures and beliefs coming together to have fun. Barriers would break down

and I believe wars would be considerably reduced if not negated if there was more consideration for each others heritage. It is also my belief that knowledge negates fear and as fear is the main, if not only reason for hostility. I like to learn as much about other peoples cultures as possible. Little is known about St Patrick’s early years but in 432 AD, then a bishop; he was called to Ireland, to save the Irish. Irish folklore tells that one of his teaching methods included using the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity (the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit). After nearly thirty years of teaching and spreading God’s word he died on 18 March, 461 AD, and was buried at Downpatrick. Although there were other more successful missions to Ireland from Rome, Patrick endured as the principal champion of Irish Christianity and is held in esteem in the Irish Church. Originally the color associated with Saint Patrick was blue however over the years the color green and its association with Saint Patrick’s Day grew. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn

in celebration of St Patrick’s Day as early as the 17th century.http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Saint_Patrick’s_Day cite_note-2 Then in 1798 in hopes of making a political statement Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on 17 March in hopes of catching attention with their unusual fashion gimmick. The phrase “the wearing of the green”, meaning to wear a shamrock on one’s clothing, derives from the song of the same name. In 1903, Saint Patrick’s Day became an official public holiday in Ireland. The first Saint Patrick’s Day parade held in the Irish Free State was held in Dublin in 1931. So, whether you believe in the values of the Christian faith and all that St Patrick taught or not. Why not celebrate with your neighbour today and wear the green. Become part of the melting pot fuelled by acceptance, consideration and love for each other or just go with the notion that it’s a good excuse for a party!

Weekly Horoscopes ARIES March 21st - April 20th A close relationship is suffering because of your critical attitude. You may not realise it, but everything you tell a friend or partner is tinged with negativity. You need to be more encouraging, especially of your loved one’s plans. If they decide to go to college, switch jobs, or launch a creative project, offer your blessing. Deep down inside, you may think this idea is doomed, but that’s just because your pessimistic attitude has clouded your vision. TAURUS April 21st - May 21st You don’t have the energy you normally do, perhaps because of your diet. Go easy on the carbohydrates and opt for lean proteins instead. On the plus side, your family is poised to relieve you of some exhausting chores. Don’t look this gift horse in the mouth. Divesting yourself of work will give you time to catch up on your sleep. An overbearing supervisor thinks you’re trying to shirk your duties. Keep a low profile and try to stay out of this their way. GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st It’s hard to feel romantic when you’re overwhelmed with responsibilities. If you’re in a relationship, beware of neglecting your partner. The two of you need to go away together, just the two of you. Hire someone to watch your home, pets, and children while you’re away. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy yourself, but you should choose a destination with lots of privacy. Too many distractions won’t cultivate the intimacy you need to reconnect. CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd You feel pretty reclusive, seeking to avoid the pressures of public life. Unfortunately, burying your head in the sand won’t solve your problems. This will only compound them. Confront a partner or friend who has been pushing you around. You’re tired of being treated like a second class citizen. If push comes to shove, you opt for a temporary separation. A wonderful moneymaking opportunity awaits you. You need to cultivate self confidence to tackle this job successfully. LEO July 24th - August 23rd Negative thinking is driving opportunity from your door. Stop assuming the deck is stacked against you. If you encounter a cloud, look for its silver lining. A down in the dumps workmate makes your job difficult. Every time you propose a path of action, they shoot it down. Maybe you should just start work without asking them. Sure, this will cause problems with the powers that be, but when they see the fruits of your labour, all will be forgiven. VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd Selfishness is driving a wedge between you and a loved one. You feel like your friend throws your hard earned money down the drain. Maybe the best way around your problems is to have separate accounts. Use the third for dual expenses like utilities, groceries, and housing payments. Then the rest of your money can be spent in a discretionary fashion. If your partner wants to blow their stash on luxuries, that’s their business. LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd It’s hard to know who to trust these days. You’re tired of being crossed by an opportunist. Keeping your own counsel is safe, but not satisfying. You’re the type who wants to share your life with someone special. Unfortunately, family life feels unstable. A relative with problems is making things chaotic. You may be better off turning to friends for sympathy. An old pal will have you laughing over your trials and tribulations in no time.

SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd A large institution makes it difficult for you to do what you please. For the time being, you need to play by some pretty strict rules. It won’t be possible to find a new job in this economy, so you’ll just have to grin and bear it. Fortunately, your boss approves of the work you’ve been doing, and is coming round to thinking about giving you a raise. It may be necessary to postpone a trip or an outing. Although it’s disappointing, it can’t be helped. SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st It feels like a friend has an ulterior motive for being so kind. Trust your instincts; they won’t steer you wrong. Writing your pal a letter of recommendation will backfire. You can’t afford to risk your reputation on an irresponsible character like this. Money problems are weighing on your shoulders. A big agency isn’t prepared to loan you the funds you need. If you’re looking for work, you may want to explore opportunities overseas. CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th The job security you crave is elusive. No matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to break through the glass ceiling. Part of the problem is an attitude of entitlement. Just because you have a lot of training and experience doesn’t mean you are a shoo-in for a particular position. You need to charm an employer if you’re going to get the top spot. Fortunately, your love life is taking the sting out of career disappointments. An admirer can’t keep their hands off you!

£199.99

AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th A narrow minded authority figure is making life miserable. You’re tired of hearing their sermons. Unfortunately, you’re not in the position to tell them to shut up. Your best strategy may be listening to music while this bore rattles on. Fortunately, a dynamic friend or business partner is poised to rescue you from this stifling situation. Together, you will take a trip to a sunny climate that allows you to let down your hair and have some fun. You deserve a break!

07962 374 937

PISCES February 20th - March 20th A heavy tax burden forces you to change the way you earn, save and spend money. If you’re out of your depth with this situation, consult a money manager. This expert can show you ways to make the most from your earnings. An exclusive club is getting a little burdensome. You’re tired of adhering to oppressive rules and regulations. Spending more time outdoors will feel liberating. This would be a good time to explore some nature trails or take up bike riding

COPLEY’S COLUMN ALBERT SNODGRASS ENDING THE ARGUMENT A husband desperate to end an argument offers to buy is wife a new car. She curtly declines his offer by saying, “That’s not quite what I had in mind.”

Frantically he offers her a new house. Again she rejects his offer, “That’s not quite what I had in mind.” Curious, he asks: “What did you have in mind?” She retorts, “I’d like a divorce.” He answers, “I hadn’t planned on spending quite that much.” DRIVING HOME ONE AFTERNOON A man was driving home late one afternoon, and he was driving above the speed limit. He looks in his rear view mirror and notices a police car with its red lights. He thinks, “I can outrun this guy”, so he floors it. The cars are racing down the highway - 60, 70, 80, 90 miles an hour. Finally, as his speedometer passes 100, the guy realizes he can’t outrun the cop so he gives up and pulls over to the curb. The police officer gets out of his cruiser and approaches the car. He leans down and says “Listen mister, I’ve had a really lousy day, and I just want to go home. Give me a good excuse and I’ll let you go.”

Gary Phillips was quite rightly voted ‘Best All-round entertainer’ in this year’s Mercury Awards, and not for the first time. Gary stands alone in this category, and the fact that he appears every Friday and Saturday night in his pub, the Forest on Rutland Road, Sheffield, to a full house, bears testimony to the outstanding ability of this charming man. However, he has shown this weekend that he would be in contention for two other awards, Best Landlord and Best Pal. By way of explanation, I mentioned to Gary that my partner Caron and I were celebrating our first year together and I thought it fitting to mark the occasion with a visit to the Forest on Saturday night. Gary very kindly offered to pick us up, along with a couple of close friends from my house and transport us to his pub. On arrival, he bought us the first round of drinks and later presented us with a bottle of champagne. This was a kind gesture from a fine man and a close friend The evening was superb, as usual, and a couple of guest singers caught my attention. First of them was an elderly lady, Margaret, who brought her own mini disc and sang very well, much to the delight of the packed house. Secondly, was a young man, Adam Hayes, who is apparently a regular karaoke singer. I have to say that he is much better than that, and without any sign of nerves, displayed a vocal

talent which would favourably compare with any artiste on the circuit. With some help and encouragement, Adam could more than hold his own were he to turn professional. Also appearing on the night was winner of the Mercury awards male solo singer, Marc Lawrence, taking a break from his very successful stint for a large hotel group. Marc exudes class and is extremely popular with the regulars of the Forest, where he performs a guest spot on a regular basis. When he duets with Gary Phillips, it is a joy to behold. There is much happening at the newly re-furbished Forest, with top nights coming shortly with a St. George’s night for ‘Help the Heroes’ starring top local comedian Jimmy Carol and on Easter Sunday a scoop for the pub with the booking of Paul Pashley, who famously sang at Wayne Rooney’s wedding. This excellent Frank Sinatra soundalike does much corporate work for Manchester United. It is no secret that I am a great advocate of the need to advertise in these times of economic constraint. Surely the best advertisement in a long time is the one for Go Compare Insurance. The fact that many people find it irritating is immaterial. The important thing is that everyone remembers the advertisement, and it has brought instant fame to tenor, Wynne Evans, who plays the handle - barred moustached Gio Campario. The insurance companies get it right with the second most memorable being

‘Compare the Meercat.com’ Never has the weakness of the pound against the euro been more evident than this week when I went to book a couple of holidays this week. The fact of the matter is that two weeks in Spain has cost an absolute fortune and our second holiday in Mexico considerably less. I have chosen the ‘all inclusive’ route as being the best option, to alleviate having to keep finding five euros every time we want a beer or an ice cream. This government just gets worse. I am appalled by the amount of protection afforded to Jon Venables, killer of little Jamie Bulger. If I had my way, he would have been incarcerated for life, not given a new identity and released into the community. I feel so sorry for the parents of Jamie who have not got the justice they deserved. The ineptitude of our clueless social services has once again been exposed with the way they failed to detect the disgusting man who seriously abused his daughters. The whole system needs a dramatic overhaul, to protect our children from abuse by their parents, would you believe? Real Fathers for Justice has my total support,. Dad’s who suffer at the hands of innately cruel ex-wives, who poison their children’s minds against their fathers are treated terribly and the guilty mothers should be rightly villified.

The man thought for a moment and said, “Three weeks ago my wife ran off with a police officer. When I saw your cruiser in my rear view mirror I thought you were that officer and you were trying to give her back to me!” TEN YEARS WITHOUT PAROLE A convicted felon was given ten years without parole for his latest crime. After 2 years in jail, he managed to escape. His escape was the lead item on the six o’clock news. Because he had to be careful, he worked his way home taking little travelled routes, running across deserted fields and taking every precaution he could think of. Eventually he arrived at his house and he rang the bell. His wife opened the door and bellowed at him, “You good-fornothing bum! Where the hell have ya been? You escaped over six hours ago.”

SIMPLY RED Simply Red Bring The Curtain Down After 25 Years “Welcome to the final year of twenty five mind blowing years,” says Mick Hucknall of Simply Red’s final shows. “What an adventure it has been!” Simply Red’s classic pop and elegant ballads have provided an uplifting and emotional soundtrack to our turbulent times. The band will say their farewells all over the world this year, after what has been a remarkable 25 years, returning to Sheffield Arena one last time on Thursday 16th December. Tickets, priced £42.50 & £37.50 (booking fee may apply) go on general sale at 9am on Friday 19th March. Since their first tour in 1985, Simply Red have played over 1,100 shows to over 11 million people, notched up over 55 million global sales, over 31 Top 40 UK singles, 3 BRIT Awards, 2 Ivor Novellos, 2 US No.1 Singles and a MOBO Special Achievement. “I could never have imagined my career would bring me so far,” added Mick Hucknall. “We want to share this closing anniversary with all the people who have enjoyed our sound throughout the years. Celebrate it and gently move on to the second half of a musical story. We all hope to see you at a show somewhere soon.” Simply Red grew out of Manchester and their first UK university/club tour in 1985 and quickly graduated to Eu-

rope and the USA in 1986. By 1987 they had conquered New Zealand and Australia and in 1989 they toured South America and Japan for the first time. By 1990 they had become a true global arena act and continued at that level until this day. Last year’s Greatest Hits tour notched up a further 1 million people across the World. Simply Red will play their final Farewell shows after a quarter of a century of touring, allowing Mick Hucknall to pursue a solo career and begin a brand new chapter. The announcement of the Farewell tour coincides with the release of a new Simply Red album, ‘Songs of Love’ on February 28th in time for Mothers Day. It features Simply Red’s finest love songs and two brand new recordings. The first is a very personal Hucknall song ‘I Have The Love’ and the second is a new recording of ‘Beside You’, a song which appeared originally on the soundtrack to the movie ‘What Dreams May Come’. Tickets for Simply Red’s Sheffield concert, priced £42.50 & £37.50 (booking fee may apply) go on general sale at 9am on Friday 19th March in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk or www.arenaticketshop. co.uk

field and will travel around the country to Newcastle, London, Manchester, Nottingham, Birmingham and Belfast, treating audiences to specially choreographed routines by skating legends Torvill & Dean. The format of the tour is the same as previous years and as in the hit ITV1 show, the audience will be able to use their mobile phone to text vote for their favourite dancing couple. The votes will then be added to the scores from the Judges to decide the winner. Once the votes have been counted, the winning celebrity will join their skating partner to perform a magical finale. As with the previous tours, all profits from text voting will go to charity; more than £80,000 has been raised to date. The first ever live show took place in Birmingham on 7th April 2007 following record ratings for the ITV1 show. Since then the Dancing on Ice Tour has performed to over 800,000 people. Celebrities over the last four tours have included Zaraah Abrahams, Stefan Booth, Kyran Bracken, Todd Carty, Gareth Gates, Duncan James, Bonnie Langford, Melinda Messenger, Lisa Scott Lee, Linda Lusardi, Roxanne Pallett, Jessica Taylor, Zoe Salmon, David Seaman and Suzanne Shaw.

DANCING ON ICE Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean today reveal that their Dancing on Ice Tour, now in its fourth year, is close to selling its millionth ticket since the live arena show began in 2007. To celebrate the occasion and as a special treat to fans, the person who buys the millionth ticket will have the once in a lifetime chance to skate with the legendary ice duo who were catapulted to instant fame following their flawless Bolero performance at the 1984 Olympics. The lucky buyer will get to spend one hour on the ice with the Olympic gold medalists Torvill & Dean. The lesson will be suitable for those with any level of ice skating from complete novice to professional. With ticket sales rapidly approaching the one million mark - the figure stands at just under 980,000 – tour producers estimate the millionth ticket could be sold as early as this weekend. This year’s Dancing on Ice Tour opens on 8th April and has a fantastic line up of contestants including Inbetweeners star Emily Atack, 2Point4 Children actress Clare Buckfield, Coronation Street’s Gaynor Faye, ex-Hollyoaks actor Chris Fountain, Boyzone’s Mikey Graham, ex-Footballers’ Wives actor Gary Lucy, X factor star Ray Quinn and Emmerdale’s Hayley Tamaddon who is still the bookies favourite to win the show. Christopher Biggins and Kyran Bracken also join the line-up this year as judges. They will sit on the panel alongside judges Karen Barber and Nicky Slater from the hit ITV1 series. The Tour kicks off in Shef-

F1 season kicks off with a bang! Finally the first F1 cars to be raced were revved up and ready to go for the first practice session of the 2010 season. Lets first start with some controversy over the McLaren car. Many of the other teams going into the race last Sunday complained to the FIA about the McLaren car as they had installed a system that transferred air coming over the bonnet of the car from the front and out the back to reduce the down-force on the rear wing to reduce some of the traction on the straights and help to accelerate quicker so that the cars could get up to 5 mph quicker on the straights. Also the Bahrain circuit had been lengthened so that it was the 2nd longest on the cycle. In qualifying out of the three new teams local Virgin team came out best as they qualified 19th and 22nd. Both HRT cars started in the pits. Surprisingly Schumacher’s teammate Rosberg qualified 2 places higher than the former 7 times world champion after an eventful Saturday. In qualifying session 3 at the dead it looked like a Ferrari 1-2 on the grid. As their nearest rivals McLaren were the closest with British driver Lewis Hamilton and even

MOTORS he couldn’t keep up with the Ferrari’s blistering pace as he was 6 tenths of a second behind Alonso the slower of the two. It took a scolding hot lap from German driver Sebastian Vettel in the still going RBR Renault team. He was also the quickest driver on the weekend setting a 1:53.883. His qualifying time was a 1:54.101. An underrated Force India Team stole positions 10 & 12 with Sutil and Luizzi. World Champion Jenson Button in the McLaren drove an average 1:55.715 and finished in eighth and Michael Schumacher edged him to seventh with a 1:55.593 and mark Webber just beating him to sixth with 1:55.298. So the grid looked like this; 1st S.Vettel, 2nd F.Massa, 3rd F. Alonso, 4th L.Hamilton, 5th N.Rosberg, 6th M.Webber, 7th M.Schumacher, 8th J.Button, 9th R.Kubica, 10th A.Sutil, 11th R.Barrichello, 12th V.Luizzi, 13th N.Hulkenburg, 14th P.De La Rosa, 15th S.Buemi, 16th K.Kobayashi, 17th V.Petrov, 18th J.Alguersuari, 19th T.Glock, 20th J.Trulli, 21st H.Kovalainen, 22nd L.Di Grassi, 23rd B.Senna, 24th K.Chandhok. So the preparations were as usual and the season finally kicked off for real. And the new weight added to the cars showed as the first few laps were extremely slow. But mainly the race swung on the first corner. At the front Alonso went past his teammate and into second and also Webber had an oil burn, which meant that he dropped a couple of places but that wasn’t the end of that because the smoke caused havoc at the back as two cars spun backwards one of them

being high flying Kubica who later retired with many others including many debutants Chandhok lasted just over two laps a couple of laps later Hulkenburg and Di Grassi retired and followed by Glock, De La Rosa, Senna, Kobayashi and Petrov. So for many of the new teams it was a day to forget for them. The only new team to have both cars finish was British team Lotus. So after the new 4 second pit stops Hamilton finally got past Rosberg who had been holding him up after passing him on the first corner. So it looked like that the top three were out on their own and were to have podium places wrapped up. But on lap 32 controversy, as the weird way that RBR have their exhaust pipe placed marked the end for Vettel’s race after it failed after being overheated and on replays showed that a part fell off. So he lost power on the straights and that gave the Ferrari’s the 1-2 they wanted and yet again the new Ferrari driver gets a win on his first race. It looked like Vettel was to slip right down the grid into sixth giving Schumacher fifth but he battled on held off Rosberg to keep fourth. That meant that Lewis Hamilton got the final podium position. Although literally on the home straight coming up to the first corner after Vettel had crossed the line the car stopped but never mind at least he got 10 points out of it with the new points system. Button finished 7th and Webber finished 8th. A disappointing start for RBR, Mercedes and McLaren after the current world champion Button finished in a heart breaking seventh. So the dream start for Ferrari but can they continue that great form into the Melbourne race in 2 weeks time. So drama and controversy on the first race after the massive build up to this season. So was it a great way to start it? By G Meister

British Tourism Week The fourth annual British Tourism Week (BTW) takes place from 15 - 21 March 2010. His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales will once again be Patron for this series of inter-related events, which aims to raise local, regional, national and international awareness of the size, value and importance of Britain’s £114 billion visitor economy. BTW 2009 saw over 230 events take place across the country, culminating with the inaugural Best of Britain & Ireland Travel Trade Forum (formerly the British Travel Trade Fair) and a new two-day consumer show. Building upon this success, British Tourism Week 2010 will highlight the contribution made by businesses large and small, public and commercial, and aims to galvanise the commitment of organisations and individuals to further improve and develop the industry. Be Part of It, and get involved. Whether you work in the industry and wish to organise an event; a politician wanting to visit your local tourism businesses; a member of the media looking for information on what’s happening that week; or you are a consumer looking for tourist information, you will find this website contains lots of ideas and resources to help you. British Tourism Week is organised by VisitBritain with the support of The Tourism Society, and an Executive Committee comprising the

Tourism Alliance; Wales Tourism Alliance; Scottish Tourism Forum; VisitEngland; VisitScotland; Visit Wales; Visit London; the English Regions; British Hospitality Association; ABTA the Travel Association; UKinbound; Local Government Association; Association of Leading Visitor Attractions; Travelodge; Hoseasons; Holiday Cottages Group; British Beer & Pub Association; Coach Tourism Council; Group Travel Organisers Association; Virgin Trains; and Best of Britain & Ireland Events (organisers of the Best of Britain & Ireland Travel Trade Forum and the Best of Britain & Ireland consumer show). British Tourism Week aims to demonstrate that tourism is critical to the economy of the United Kingdom. To achieve this we will: Increase industry awareness BTW will help redefine both the image and the reality of British tourism for the future, by bringing together under one banner: businesses and their employees from every sector of the industry government at all levels BTW aims to address, with all constituents and stakeholders, the lack of understanding of the size, scope and importance of the tourism industry and the inter-dependability of the different sectors such as transport, tour operators,

accommodation and attractions. Raise quality standards BTW aims to encourage a greater appreciation of the value of providing a quality tourism product. All sectors of the industry need to seek continuous improvement in order to guarantee an enjoyable experience for visitors and improve the UK’s international competitiveness. Promote training and professionalism BTW will encourage tourism employers and employees to improve their customer service and skills-levels through training and development. BTW will, by raising awareness of the scope and importance of the tourism industry, emphasise that the industry represents a great career choice with extensive opportunities in multiple disciplines. Improve the UK’s competitiveness The UK has been losing global market share for inbound tourism over the last ten years. BTW will explore how the UK’s complex tourism industry can work together and with government to improve its international competitiveness. Support the preparations for hosting the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

Live Review The X Factor circus rolled into Sheffield on Thursday night, packing a capacity crowd into the Arena. Limited to the top eight finalists from the TV series, this tour will nevertheless, according to previous history, be the last opportunity for several of these hopefuls to appear in the limelight, before fading into obscurity. Looking brighter and better produced than previous years, we actually had a live host in the form of Jack Brazier, rather than the pre-recorded build-ups used in the past. The show kicked off with seven of the eight acts performing together, before Lucy claimed the stage for a reprise of her “rock-chick” persona, belting out “Sweet Child of Mine”. Fellow Welsh teenager Lloyd took to the stage for a solo, demonstrating that he has virtually all the requirements for a pop star – apart, unfortunately, from the voice. Next up was Jamie Archer – rock legend or karaoke king? A belting version of “Sex on Fire” had the audience rocking. Jamie can certainly perform, but in this genre his future success will depend on his ability to produce and record original material which has the same appeal. We waited – and it arrived. The infamous twins performed their chart hit “Ice Ice Baby” coupled with a breathless dance routine. Jedward have something – they haven’t got the voices, but they have the energy and determination. There’s obviously been a lot of coaching, and a great deal of hard work since they last graced our tellies in December. Slick, together, and professional, they somehow haven’t lost the “amateur dramatics group” feeling. Quick-fire performances from Olly Murs and Dannyl Johnson followed, before they were joined on stage by Stacey, Lloyd and Lucy. As the intro to “Ghostbusters” fired up, we looked in vain for Jedward. Suddenly a

fifty foot high “Marshmallow Man” inflated on stage and Jedward appeared suspended in mid air above the crowd, spinning and dancing on the wires as they moved towards the stage. Tremendous theatre and a mightily impressive physical performance from the boys. The second half of the show opened with Stacey Solomon in her “sexy” mode – an accomplished, powerful and polished performance. Lucy returned for a ballad-based set, and as expected Dannyl re-appeared to perform “With a little help from my friends”, the song that established him as the bookies’ favourite. However he was joined by Jamie and Olly, and the trio were on fire as they blasted through the song, with great individual vocals and a really tight arrangement – great entertainment. Back came Stacey in a stunning full length gown, and she closed with a superb duet with Lucy, singing “Wonderful World” before the re-appearance of Olly for his solo set. We hadn’t seen any sign of the winner, but at last, with a great build up, Joe finally took to the stage, lifting the audience with a reprise of his Rock Week killer performance, “Don’t Stop Believing.” Running through the X Factor catalogue, we heard “Sorry seems to be the hardest word,” followed by “Don’t let the sun go down on me” a new track, and culminating in “The Climb”. Joe was assured, confident, and loving every minute of his time on stage. However when he left the stage, the audience were probably a little

disappointed not to have heard his trademark audition number, “Dance with my father.” The show closed with the whole cast singing the charity single “Hero”. No encores, as usual, as they aren’t in the script! Overall opinions? A classier show than previously, carefully planned and showcasing the acts effectively. You don’t expect original music from the X Factor, and this year was no different. Great entertainment whoever your favourite was. As to the acts themselves, then probably Lucy, Lloyd and maybe also Jamie will probably vanish after the tour. Dannyl could very well carve out a career (if Simon sees a money-spinner!) and Olly will certainly work for a long time in the business – whether on TV or the West End. With the right management and material, Stacey has the voice and the individuality to become an established recording artist. Joe may be more of an enigma – will he follow the Shayne Ward route – boy pop-star turned obscure B Celebrity – or is there a longer term future for him? He has a top quality voice – but will the innocent boyish smile carry him along when he’s in his twenties? That leaves only one act – the twins. While ever they have the backing of Louis Walsh and the Syco organisation, they will be in the news! Admittedly they can’t sing (but they are improving!) but it’s clear from their performances that they are working incredibly hard to make the most of their opportunity, and I would put money on seeing them around for many years to come.

ART BACK ATTACK! IN THE U.S.S.R! Artery release their brand new EP on Monday 23rd February - the first from the band in 25 years - and they celebrate it with a special launch gig at the O2 Academy on the 20th. The artsy post-punk band Artery formed in Sheffield, in 1979, consisting of vocalist/guitarist Toyce Ashley, bassist Neil McKenzie, drummer Garry Wilson, and guitarist Mark Gouldthorpe. The quartet was originally called “The but” they wisely opted for a change. Artery made their debut on Limited Edition, a label run by their manager, with 1979’s Mother Moon single, and were featured a couple months later in a major NME article that rounded up the then fertile Sheffield scene. On the Aardvark label, the band released a double-pack single in May of 1980, which featured two studio songs and a second 7” consisting of four others recorded at the Rotherham Arts Centre. They appeared on the Bouquet of Steel compilation around the same time, which was another Aardvark release showcasing a number of Sheffield bands, including the Comsat Angels and I’m So Hollow. The band have been through many line-up changes in their 25 year career, and we don’t have the space to list them all here, but Artery deserve their place in history, they belong in that exclusive Sheffield club of artists that are original and have proved this city keeps producing inspiring bands, all different from each other but all unique in their own way….go and see them. Rock band Flymore is one of Russia’s most exciting new exports, now signed to Red Star Music, one of the few UK labels who have spotted the potential of Eastern European Rock. The band, originally called Millenium, was formed in 2002 by guitarist Igor Mukhin and bassist Denis Rybakov. From the city of Ivanovo, they grew up listening to Nirvana, Green Day, and Rage Against The Machine, and were inspired to start writing their own material. They soon discovered talented singer, Frozt, performing with another band, who was quick to join them. Millenium’s

FreeFold are a five-piece rock band based in Chesterfield. Formed in May 2006, the past two years have acted as a transition period enabling the band to create a distinctive style, sound and show. In a relatively short space of time the band have recorded two demo CDs, firstly in 2007 with Dave Cretfield (Kaiser Chiefs, Embrace) and most recently in early 2008, when the band went into the studio to produce ‘Johnny Soldier’ with John Mitchell (Funeral For A Friend, Enter Shikari). The experiences have helped the band greatly, providing invaluable in-

debut gig was at Ivanovo’s Rock Club (How Russian does that sound?). After that, they played whenever and wherever they could, quickly building up a large fan base. Drummer Serj Kulikov, and a second guitarist, Nik, joined the band. With this new line-up, the band changed their name to Flymore. They started playing higher profile live shows and writing more and more new material. In 2007 Flymore recorded their debut album, Millenium 45, with producer Dmitriy Taravkov, who had previously worked with many established Russian metal acts. The band stayed in Moscow for three months and worked on more than 20 songs with Dmitriy

at the legendary Mosfilm Studio. Together they carefully selected and fine-tuned 12 of those songs, to best reflect the group’s style. Since then, Flymore has toured throughout Russia and performed at rock festivals across the former USSR, including the Ukraine and Belarus. The band has a UK tour which brings them to Sheffield on the 19th with a show at the Corp and a new single release planned for sometime this month.

sights into developing their music. Through hard work and lengthy practice sessions, the band have since been able build upon such experiences and have progressed in their song-writing abilities. Last year they were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to support American post-hardcore quintet Senses Fail at the Sheffield O2 Academy during their UK tour and the band consider it their greatest achievement to date. It

may be a good idea to see the band now before you may have to pay for arena size tickets! Catch them live on the 22nd at the Corp.

reviews by presley artist: Boy George single: Amazing Grace release date: March 22nd Great to see The Boy back! I read his autobiography about six years ago, it was an extremely entertaining read. Lots of humour, loads of shocking moments, scandal, drug overdoses, near death experiences, comebacks, money. It was like a musical Dallas! Since then there’s been even more shocking moments, especially his cleaning of the streets of New York punishment and then his incarceration in a UK prison after alleged rent boy imprisonment charges??? (An update of his book is probably needed). But whatever the truth, I can’t quite help feeling that his fame helped give him a much heavier sentence than he deserved. After his tagged release, he was set to be on this years Celebrity Big Brother, but the courts wouldn’t allow it? The reason………he was on a strict regime that meant he had to be at home between certain evening and night time hours so the police knew where he was. Big Brother has 24 hours multi-camera surveillance!!! The police could have kept a closer eye on him in there, he could be doing anything in his own home. Ridiculous aint it. A shame because he would have been great on that show. What is cool though is that he’s now recording and touring again. Although when I saw the title of this song I was a tad terrified that it was a cover of the old famous classic, a song that I’ve never really felt endeared to. Thank goodness it isn’t that. It’s an original song that does have a bit of a hymn like quality to it, but is mainly a laid back dance tune. Female vocalist Ana Lains is doing vocals on this and that kinda gives it a slight operatic feel to it. In all honesty, it’s not the kind of music I would go out and buy, but for what genre it is, it’s a decent tune. But most of all, its good to have George back where he should be, in the music biz.

artist: Elvis Presley album: On Stage release date: 22nd March

If you’re familiar with this album, not all is as it appears. This actually is the said album of Elvis’ 2nd stint in Vegas 1970, but also incorporates the Elvis In Person live album from Elvis’ opening Vegas show from the 1st Vegas stint in ’69. These are two of the best live recordings of Elvis you’re ever gonna hear. The first is full of raw energy, opening with re-done frenzied classic rock n’ roll stuff and ending with more recent (at the time) material such as a seven minute pounding version of Suspicious Minds. Plus there’s one tune on here that few will know called ‘My Babe’ it’s possibly one of the sexiest songs and versions you will ever hear! The album from the following year is just as cool, less rock n’roll material but with really brilliant cover versions of songs such as The Beatles ‘Yesterday’ and Neil Diamonds ‘Sweet Caroline’. You still get an awful lot of energy though with relentless versions of ‘See See Rider’ and ‘Polk Salad Annie’. Vocally Elvis is as good as he’d ever been, there was still a slight rasp in his voice when he pushed it which is exciting, something that as the years went on he lost as his voice matured and possibly the drugs softened. This double cd also contains 11 extra live songs, all sadly have been released in one format or another over the years, but still well worth getting your hands on if you’ve not already got them.

Crookes to stage musical cruise through The best of Broadway

Smackee return after and absence of 8 years

Billed as “The Musicals” England’s premier show group - Smackee, have delighted music lovers recently. Equally, their music evokes nostalgia as the group take audiences on a musical cruise, so to speak, through some of the best Broadway and West End hits. Indeed as someone commented after one show, “It brought a whiff of fresh air to starved music lovers of Devon. In a nutshell Smackee’s show was lively, dynamic, colourful, nostalgic and some of the best song and dance hits were brought to life by Barry Walker, Dawn Glenville and Margaret Barnes, of course accompanied ably by the musicians - Rob Mackenzie the lead guitarist, Tom Mollins on bass and Keith Liddle at the keyboards. The opening number by Barry with his boyish spirit, a solo razzle dazzle set the mood

and thereafter there was no stopping them as they sang and danced with un - flagging energy and panache as the audience clapped, swayed, sang and danced in unison with the stars on stage. Remarkably, it was not just entertainment or show of talent, but a tribute to some of music’s legendary performers as the trio sang the best from Cabaret, Grease, Evita, The King and I, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Joseph, Mamma Mia - a vast and impressive repertoire. Dawn’s haunting rendering of Evita’s Don’t Cry For Me Argentina amidst pin drop silence was splendid as was her - Life is a Cabaret. Later Barry and Margaret’s duet - All I Ask Of You from Phantom of the Opera took us all to His Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End. Later, Barry’s solo of Nessun Dorma with English lyrics

written by Neil Sedaka earned him a standing ovation. The second part of the show was even more action packed as Barry and the girls sang some of the best Grease songs - including the all time favourite You’re the One That I Want and Grease Lightning. An appreciative audience responded overwhelmingly after listening to Getting To Know You and Shall We Dance, both from The King and I. When Dawn and Margaret appeared in their dazzling blue costumes accompanied by the music of Waterloo, the audience screamed and whistled as they realised it was the turn of all the Abba hits. This was closely followed by the evergreen Thank You For The Music, after which it was time to stand and tell the stars just that - with thunderous applause. Amidst cries of “encore”

GOVERNMENT PROPOSALS ARE NOT HELPFUL Many clubs and pubs are living from day to day and we hear about pubs closing on a regular basis. I’ll not go on about the price of supermarket alcohol as enough has probably been said however it is obviously a factor. There are many out there who believe that the smoking ban has had a detrimental effect and evidence would support this. What irritates me about this particular piece of legislation is

not the actual band but the scope of it. The government bowed to pressure from minority groups to extend the ban beyond theat which had been originally understood or agreed. In the original proposal there was provision for private clubs to have a designated smoking area within the premises. I have always believed that drink drivers get what they deserve however it appears that the transport minister, Lord Adonis,

proposes to lower the level of alcohol that you are allowed to drink to below 1 pint of beer or a small glass of wine for a man and less for a woman. Once again this will have a negative effect on attendances in pubs and clubs and for many it will be the last straw. Am I missing something here? Is this not a Labour government that is introducing these measures, a Labour government that is supposed to be the friend of the

Barry sang his all time favourite Unchained Melody which put Gareth Gates to shame. What is so commendable is the groups versatility and energy that makes them so popular world wide. gesticulations, especially his statue-like postures at times, were so perfect and well timed, that they could not fail to bring a smile to everyone’s face. For nearly two hours, it was entertainment of the highest standard, with a touch of nostalgia, and no one was left in any doubt of the sheer class of this unique act. The sound and lighting was also of equal standing and one only hopes Smackee will be back, but for now “thank you for the music” and lets hope the show will go on! You can see this fantastic show at Crookes club on Friday 28th May. Tickets are available from The Mercury on 0114 276 3701 working man. The price of fuel and tobacco are at a record high, VAT may be introduced on food at a level of 5% after the election, the 10% tax rate for lower earners has been abolished and we can expect massive cuts in public spending. Is it just me or is the working man on the sharp end of a good shafting yet again? I made an editorial policy decision of only printing good news where at all possible and there is plenty of good news about. Sometimes it’s hard not to let of a bit of steam.

I am currently running a camp in Helmand Province in Afghanistan and I would like to get as many readers as possible to send my blokes / females (many are very keen bikers) your bike, scooter or car magazines once you have finished with them. I apologise for the direct approach, but magazines are not delivered as part of our operational welfare package. The postage is free (up to 2kg) to the BFPO address and all it would cost is the envelope. The postal address if you would like to help is: QM, TFH, Lashkar Gar, BFPO 715. Any help will be greatly appreciated and all magazines will be read multiple times. Major Andy Lothian

Alright everyone ‘HOWMUCH’ here, Longtime no write? Well long time nowt to write about to be honest, but I must tell you a few things that have caused me to rattle the old keyboard first the band we had on at ours Firth Park Wmc last Saturday called The Buddies a 100% rock’n’roll jive band who had the very good crowd singing along with them and quite a few couples up jiving away plus performing one of the most entertaining drum solos I’ve ever seen I can’t tell you any more about that as it would spoil it,but what I can tell you is that this new band are most entertaining and a band if in your area I would make a real effort to try and see Con Sec’s take note this band can play and fill your club plus the fee is fair not over priced and all the blokes in the band itself are real gentlemen. Thanks lads. This Sunday you’ll be able to catch yet another new band to Sheffield called Mr Vagabond who are over from Bulgaria for just 4 weeks they are a top rock covers band and having seen clips of them on Youtube look the buisness yet again something different from the normal rock bands good as they are (well some of them) so if you enjoy a good rock band please try and check them out. I can also now tell you of a fantastic show we are putting on in aid of Help for Heroes on Friday 23rd April St Georges day,we have been putting on a charity show on St Georges for the past 4 years and the shows have got bigger and better every year, this years show will have Stephanie King as our Hostess/Compere plus the following acts Bev Brookes/Gordon Carr/ Stephannie Kings Stars of the Future plus others to be comfirmed on the night and you never know who you could bump into from the world of show bizz? Now our Top of the bill is the very funny comiedian the one and only MR Johnnie Casson star of many TV shows Live at the London Paladium and the Des O’Connor show to name a few this show is a one off special and tickets are priced at 5 pounds each (it would cost you a tenner just to see him in Blackpool), all going to the fund with no bucket rattling on the night etc just the 1 ticket payment. There will of coarse be a good raffle

1 game of big money bingo 50% to fund 50% paid out and we have some items to auction to date a signed Blades shirt plus match tickets and the same from the Owls plus some signed goalie gloves. This will be a really good night with the club all decked out as we always do. Tickets will be limited and can be purchased from Firth Park WMC and I believe, from this paper, the past 4 shows have been brilliant and I’m sure this will be a sell-out so be early and get your tickets asap for this fantastic show and cause. Don’t forget those who have the most birthdays are the oldest? Thats all folks xx Craig ‘Howmuch’ Daniels Entertainment officer Firth Park WMC Where were all the anticipated Phil Collins fans Friday last 12th? They weren’t at the Woodhouse Mill WMC which is a great pity because the 100 or so people that were, had one of the best nights ever. I myself am a confirmed Phil Collins/Genesis fan so I had a fantastic time. Rob Lewis as Phil Collins was seriously good, he even looked like him. Every song was a delight to the ears and judging by his gyrations on stage he was also seriously fit. I know that there are many tribute acts out there and some leave a lot to be desired. This one was the exception so for all you fans out there, keep a lookout for this star turn, you wont be disappointed.Talking about really good acts The Realistics who appeared at The Handsworth Social club on Saturday 6th march were a class act two guys who sang a good range of songs including many by the legendary Drifters. Excellent voices one who could reach notes that others can only dream of. Definitely a name to look out for. They deserved a larger audience than the 40/60 people they received.Come on you clubbers there is still some good entertainment out there. Ian Bowen

Thursday: Jewson Novices Handicap Chase This is a tight call. It was disappointing that Nikos Extra couldn’t win on Saturday at Sandown. Unless that was a “prep” for this I shall have to pass over him. The pair that I like are Sue Smith’s Gansey and Donald McCain’s Khatchaturian. I think both are on an upward curve and have good chances here. Of the two I have a marginal preference for Gansey. Pertemps Handicap Hurdle Final Alfie Sherrin is my selection. He ran really well last time at Newbury, winning in a cracking time. He doesn’t look to have any more to do here and is a reasonably confident choice to provide the Nicholls/Walsh combination with another Festival success. Kayf Aramis is a stout stayer and can give him most to do. Ryanair Chase It is slightly off-putting that Jack The Giant hasn’t run for 481 days but he is top-rated in my system and is something of a class act when right. I am therefore making him my tentative choice but there are plenty of dangers in an open race. From the advance cards it looks like Barry Geraghty has opted for Barber’s Shop so it may be that that one is the stable first choice. There are many Irish challengers as well, best of whom could be Golden Silver. World Hurdle Big Buck’s will be all the rage and has to have a favourite’s chance. However he is no certainty in my book and is too short a price to recommend. I think that Katchit has a decent each way shout at reasonable odds and he is the choice. Tidal Bay is a big threat as are Sentry Duty, Powerstation and Mourad. Byrne Group Plate I like Sue Smith’s Daldini for this but with 55 still left in he may not get a run. However the trainer also has Mister McGoldrick entered and he looks more likely to get in. He is my second string if Daldini doesn’t run but,if both go, I think I shall try both each way to small stakes with a (very small) reverse forecast bet in case they finish 1-2.

Fulke Walwyn/Kim Muir Handicap Chase This is a handicap chase for amateur riders. There is often a good case for simply picking the mount of a top amateur rider. In this case I would look to see what Ollie Greenall is riding. However, Tim Easterby’s Zitenka is my top rated here and is my selection. As always this is a difficult race to call and there many with good chances. Friday A seven race card featuring the Gold Cup. Triumph Hurdle I can’t have any other than my nap of the week Carlito Brigante. I know that no horse is unbeatable but I am not even going to consider the prospect of defeat. County Handicap Hurdle There are still 71 declared for this. Arcalis is my top rated and Jonjo O’Neill has a French import called Rock Noir that has won five out of six and could be anything. It hasn’t run this side of the Channel so it is difficult to get a handle on how good it is but it did have an entry in the Champion Hurdle so must be well thought of. However he has automatic top weight so I am passing over him. The one I am going for is Puyol, who won a big handicap in Ireland in January narrowly beating Tawaagg. That one now gets a pull at the weights but Puyol can come out on top again. Marodima will be dangerous. Alfred Bartlett Hurdle If Fionnegas were to line up he would be my choice but I think he will run on Wednesday. Of the rest I narrowly prefer Capal Dubh Alainn over Boston’s Angel and Beroni. Of the home contingent Baddam looks to have a decent shout each way. Gold Cup Will Kauto Star do it again, or will it be Denman? Well I am going for an each way dabble on Mon Mome. I am a bit worried that last year’s Grand National winner won’t be fast enough up the hill but he has a great engine and will get every yard of the trip. If they go a good gallop he could well stay on past tiring rivals up that punishing hill. Others that I think

have a chance of overturning the top two are the C Brigade (Carruthers , Casey Jones and Cooldine) while the youngster Tricky Trickster ran well last time at Newbury and is also a danger. Foxhunter Chase This is the amateur riders’ Gold Cup. My shortlist comprises: Baby Run; Bob Hall; Dun Doire; On The Net; Juveigneur; Mr Ed and Take The Stand. Preference is for Bob Hall who has won his last three and has a good amateur on board in Mr A J Berry. Ollie Greenall rides Amicelli who won the race in 2008 and was 4th in it last year. Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle Ponmeoath is my top rated and is the choice if he runs. Others to consider are: Cabinet Minister; Sir Tantallus Hawk; Earth Magic and Woolfall Treasure. C’Est Ca may also run in this and has a decent chance. Grand Annual Chase Enlightenment is my top rated but my selection here is Safari Journey. He can give his young jockey, Rhys Flint, a Festival winner. Others with good chances are: Moon Over Miami; Mam Ratagan; Lennon; Russian Flag and Nomecheki. Calatagan has won here in the past but is probably a bit too long in the tooth nowadays. Ronnie: ‘It was a fantastic team performance’ ‘A fantastic team performance’ were the words of Millers boss Ronnie Moore after Rotherham United secured a hard fought 1-0 victory at Dagenham and Redbridge. Adam Le Fondre was once again the Millers match winner with a second half tap-in whilst Ronnie also gave a debut to new loan signing Craig McAllister. “It was a fantastic team performance,” said a delighted Ronnie after the game. “I thought in the first half we passed it well but we didn’t threaten too much in the attacking third. We spoke about it at half time, Alfie then got the goal and after that I thought we were comfortable. They threw bodies forward and pumped long balls and throw ins into our box but we dealt with it and defended magnificently. If we defend like we did today then we will be in third spot, there is no doubt about that.” McAllister, signed on Thursday from Exeter City, was given his first start and Ronnie was impressed with his first game in a Millers shirt. “I thought he did well,” he added. “It was hard for him and you can see that he hasn’t played many games but he was clever, he knows his centre forward role. I felt that he held the ball up and he linked up very well with Alfie at times. He only came in on Friday so there is plenty more to come.”

Another weekend of losses left the Steelers in fifth place in the Elite League table. Saturday’s home game against the Hull Stingrays was the Steelers’ Teddy Bear Toss and Auction. The Steelers’ players visited Build-a-Bear in Meadowhall last Tuesday, who kindly donated a bear for each player to make and name. Dressed in replica jerseys by Rhino Sports, who make the Steelers’ team jerseys, the bears were auctioned off and raised £795 for local children’s causes Amy’s House Respite Nursery and Sheffield Children’s Hospital. After the Steelers’ first goal the crowd took to their feet as usual with one major difference, they hurled teddies and other soft toys onto the ice. More common in the US and Canada, the “Teddy Toss” has been tried sporadically by other teams in the UK, but always proves a great success in Sheffield. Doug Sheppard scored the first goal of the game for the Steelers and set the soft toys flying, but in the second period it was the Stingrays who took control, with goals from Sylvain Cloutier and Curtis Huppe giving them a 2-1 lead. Robert Dowd tied the scores for the Steelers 1:30 into the third period, and neither side managed another goal as regulation finished and the game went into overtime. Overtime was overdrive for the Stingrays, who out-shot the Steelers 5-0 during sudden death overtime, scoring the game-winning goal at 62:17. On Sunday the Steelers traveled to the Sky Dome to take on the Coventry Blaze, who are still in hot pursuit of the coveted league title. Their chances done no favours with a loss to their closest competitors, the Nottingham Panthers, the night before, Coventry came out with

everything to play for. In the first period, however, the Steelers took the lead with a goal from Matt Hubbauer in the third minute of play. Coventry leveled the scores through Brian Lee, and took a 4-1 lead with further goals from Luke Fulgham, Brad Cruikshank and Tom Watkins. In the second period Coventry sat comfortably on their lead, as neither side managed a goal for the full twenty minutes. The third period saw the Steelers stage a comeback. Robert Dowd notched up his 100th EIHL career point with the Steelers’ second goal, only to see Dan Carlson give the Blaze their three goal lead back. Steelers’ Captain Jonathan Phillips scored at 55:28, closely followed by Joey Talbot in the last two minutes, but Coventry edged a step closer to the title by hanging onto their lead until the final whistle.

Next Saturday, March 20th, sees the Steelers honour one of the living legends of British ice hockey, as Ron Shudra’s #26 jersey is raised to the rafters in his number retirement ceremony. Also the Steelers’ last league game this season, the Steelers will then take on the Nottingham Panthers. Depending on other results around the league this will be a make-or-break game for the Panthers’ title hopes. Prior to the game on Saturday afternoon there will be an Armed Forces hockey game. Fans with tickets to the Panthers game will get free entry to the charity game (face-off 3:45pm) which will see the RAF Eastern Crusade take on the Army Air Corps Hawks, but there will be opportunities at the door to make a voluntary donation to The Not Forgotten Association and the Veterans’ Aid Charity.

up what could prove to be a vital point in the battle to beat the drop after a 0-0 stalemate at the Liberty Stadium. The Owls battled well and frustrated Swansea throughout and could have even snatched all three points, had Leon Clarke connected with Luke Varney’s fizzed cross midway through the second half. Wednesday manager Alan Irvine kept faith with the same side that started at West Brom on Tuesday night with Marcus Tudgay returning to the bench. The Owls were aiming to break down a Swansea side that boasted the best defensive record in the league prior to the game, but it was the hosts that mustered the first attempt on goal. David Cotterill’s speculative effort from distance was comfortably dealt with by Lee Grant. Then moments later Clarke tried his luck from a similar distance, but the ball looped safely into the hands of Dorus de Vries in the Swansea goal. It was a cagey start to the contest, as Swansea knocked numerous long balls towards the frame of frontman Craig Beattie, which Darren Purse and Mark Beevers comfortably dealt with. Jermaine Johnson was yet again the bright spark for Wednesday. The Jamaican went close on the half hour mark when his right footed volley from all of 30 yards looped on to the roof of de Vries’ net. Swansea’s Portuguese manager Paulo Sousa was clearly frustrated with his side’s first half performance and made a double substitution at half time, throwing on Cedric van der Gun and ex-Owls striker Shefki Kuqi. And it nearly paid off just minutes into the second period when Darren Pratley dug out a cross in the channel and found Kuqi, but he failed to find the target from the edge of the area. Wednesday then responded in a positive manner. Clarke was just inches away from connecting with Luke Varney’s drilled cross after some persistent work from the loan man. On the hour mark the hosts created their best chance of the game. Dutch substitute van der Gun wriggled away from Tommy Spurr before standing up a perfect cross for Pratley, who could only head over Grant’s goal from inside the area. As Wednesday pushed men forward to snatch a crucial

break. Cotterill raced away down the left flank from inside his own half before bending a shot from the edge of the area which Grant scrambled away. Tommy Miller then saw a goal-bound drive blocked at the crucial moment as the game began to open up. Grant was then forced into a top-drawer save when he threw himself at the feet of Kuqi to deny the Finnish striker from close range after he had escaped the attentions of the Wednesday defence. Ashley Williams headed narrowly wide and Clarke almost won it for the Owls in stoppage time, but there was to be no late drama as Wednesday came away from South Wales with a deserved point.

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Lee Grant and striker Marcus Tudgay were at Morrisons Hillsborough store last week to sign up to the England 2018 FIFA World Cup bid, and to encourage the people of Sheffield to show their support for the bid by adding their signatures too. Morrisons has launched a campaign to collect more than two million signatures in its stores across England, giving supporters the opportunity to back the bid. IRVINE PLEASED WITH SWANSEA POINT Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine was pleased with the performance at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday as the Owls inched out of the relegation zone in South Wales. The visitors turned in a disciplined display to hold high-flying Swansea and post a maiden draw under Irvine. The gaffer said: “I thought it was a good performance from the lads and it’s a well deserved point. We battled well throughout and the shape was fantastic when we didn’t have the ball and I thought we could have even snatched it as we had a few chances too. “Our game plan was to make sure that we were well organised and switched on right from the off. A VIEW FROM THE TERRACE

Written by Bunsen Bob If offered 4 points out of three games against top six opposition whilst suffering from form as bad as John Merrick’s fashion sense, one would surely take it. We are becoming what American sportscasters describe as ‘streaky’. I’m not implying that our players have a tendency to contest football games in the nud (although such a tactic might be effective) nor am I suggesting that we are team of bacon rashers. We are, however, in the trend of putting a few sterling, if not spectacular, performances together followed by a few abominable ones. Clarke, Varney, Miller, Purse et al have all shown they can perform at this level so it’s up to them to have the mental aptitude and toughness to apply the talent they obviously have to ensure survival. I have a feeling it will come down to the last Sunday of the season between us and Scunthorpe United. Having worked behind the scenes at Scunthorpe for a couple of years I can vouch that it is a lovely tight knit club with even lovelier people working there. I have fond memories of bumping into a naked Brian Laws in the changing rooms, stealing kit (including a home shirt signed by the first team that has yet to receive a bid on e-bay) and dressing up as a cigarette for a half-time anti-smoking skit. I don’t really have time for the current manager, Nigel Adkins, after he gave me a rather stern dressing down for letting half a dozen young offenders loose in his gym but I don’t bare grudges too much. Although the place provides happy memories for me I’d hold no reservations about giving Scunthorpe United a nudge if they were on the edge of the toilet seat staring down into the relegation abyss if it meant Wednesday escaped the drop. I’d even double flush to be sure.

WARNOCK’S RANGERS HOLD BLADES TO DRAW The Blades stretched the unbeaten home Championship run to ten games without a defeat to end Neil Warnock’s winning start as Queens Park Rangers manager. Richard Cresswell continued his hoodoo over Rangers - scoring his fourth goal in as many games against them in less than three months! Adel Taarabt grabbed the leveller for Rangers but the final whistle confirmed that the Hoops had failed to beat the Blades in four meetings this season. Boss Blackwell was forced into four changes, Evans, Ward and Williamson all picked up injuries at Peterborough in midweek and Bartley was unwell. In came Yeates, Camara, Quinn and Seip. Free from his threematch suspension, Henderson was amongst just six substitutes named. Winning an innocuous corner in the opening minute gave QPR the early momentum and Taarabt was involved in most of their offensive scheming after winning the header from the first set-piece. On six minutes Taarabt’s low cross had too much power for Simpson and then the loanee from Tottenham found himself in the clear from Ephraim’s pass on nine minutes but Bunn raced off his line to make a smothering save. Quinn and Yeates were trying to inject a bit of tempo into United’s early moves and the latter’s pull-back, on 10 minutes, was ideal for Camara but his shot from 15 yards flew just over Ikeme’s crossbar. The post came to United’s rescue on 19 minutes when Ephraim’s cross hit the woodwork and the evaded Simpson on its way back into open play, whilst at the other end, there

Page 39

was no decisions for Cresswell when he was bundled over by Stewart and Ikeme in separate incidents. Long-range efforts from Stewart and Montgomery failed to break the deadlock and Bunn spared the blushes of team-mate Nosworthy when the defender was caught in possession close to the halfway line. Following a quick break down the left channel, the Blades goalkeeper made an impressive block from Ephraim. The importance of Bunn’s save was emphasised moments later when United grabbed the lead on 44 minutes. QPR had halfcleared a corner but the ball was returned to Yeates, who went around the outside of his marker and clipped in a cross that was just behind CRESSWELL but the striker used his experience to head into the top corner, despite Ikeme getting a hand to the ball. There was still time for Bunn to make another save, this time from Simpson, whilst QPR also won two corners before the half-time whistle arrived. The Blades began the second half well and came within inches of doubling the lead but neither Camara nor Cresswell could add a vital touch to an inswinging Yeates free-kick and moments later Rangers capitalised on the let off by levelling the scores. With 49 minutes gone a hopeful clearance was allowed to bounce and after Morgan and Seip were beaten - and Nosworthy was not in a position to cover - TAARABT raced clear to finally beat Bunn. Morgan was the first to have his name taken by referee Bates, for a foul on Taarabt, who, from the resulting free-kick, forced Bunn into an acrobatic save, the

goalkeeper swiftly edging to his right to tip over the crossbar. Bunn saved again from Taarabt, the visiting side’s biggest threat, and manager Blackwell displayed his ambition to win the game at the midway point with his first substitute, adding a striker in place of a midfielder. Henderson’s presence won two free-kicks within minutes of being introduced. There was nervous tension around the ground as the game entered the final ten minutes and Camara went close to winning it when he cut in from the left, but his shot was just wide of Ikeme’s left post. Little was brought on and Nosworthy’s shot was blocked as the Blades continued the search for the winner. Unitedites were on their feet in anticipation on 88 minutes when Montgomery robbed Connolly in the middle of the park and set free Cresswell down the left. The scorer’s cross looked ideal but, hampered by the presence of Hill, Henderson failed to make a connection at the back post. Three minutes of added time at the end of the 90 gave United more hope - the home side looked the more likely team to snatch a winner - but neither goalkeeper was severely tested late on. Blades: Bunn, Montgomery, Morgan, Nosworthy, Yeates (Little 85), Harper (Henderson 68), Cresswell, Stewart, Seip, Quinn, Camara. Unused: Bennett, Taylor, Fortune, Lowton. QPR: Ikeme, Stewart, Leigertwood, Gorkss, Connolly, Faurlin, Hill, Simpson, Ephraim (Cook 90), Priskin, Taarabt (Buzsaky 87). Unused: Ramage, Vine, Balanta, Cerny, Borrowdale.

Big Sam’s verdict Assistant Blades boss Sam Ellis admitted that United regarded the 1-1 draw with QPR as two points lost, especially as the gap between them and the play-off places decreased: “It was hard fought contest but we are only three points - or one game - from the top six. We are a bit deflated because we think that we did enough to win overall, but we are not feeling sorry for ourselves even though things haven’t really fallen for us all season. “The disappointing thing was that we gave away a sloppy goal just after half-time when we had spent all the first working hard to go in front - and we paid the price. “On the plus side, the lads came back after that and managed to create - and miss - the best chance of the game in the 89th minute. But that happens sometimes and it is the human side of football which makes it so good. “We feel that we coped well enough with the game to have won it although sometimes the players did get a bit nervous and started hacking at the ball which happens when confidence isn’t at its highest.” The loss of Kyle Bartley to food poisoning meant United were only able to name six players on the bench, especially

A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Written by Jon Warburton

Well it’s that time of the year again, when football clubs throughout the land attempt to persuade their following to commit yet another year of their lives to watching football. You would have to have been in a coma to avoid the Tony Blairesque pleas of our city rivals’ night in shining armour, claiming that the only way forward for ‘New Wednesday’ is ‘Tickets! Tickets! Tickets!’ So that’s the blue corner, but how are things going over in the red corner? Well it’s hard enough to get people to part with their money as it is, considering these testing

as Tony Kallio was yesterday confirmed as being out longterm: “Problems are piling up because Tony looks like being out for six weeks and Kyle looks unlikely to be available against Blackpool on Tuesday night. “Added to that, Chris Morgan was booked and will now be suspended for the next two matches. It means that we will definitely have to try and bring someone in on loan immediately. “We have always got potential players on our radar and we enquired about one yesterday but didn’t get him. It means that Sunday can be a busy day in football when you are chasing players.”

credit crunch times we live in. But when you add to this our substandard performances of late, you begin to fear the worst. It must be noted that the ticket prices for the new campaign, despite a small increase for the first time in years, are still very reasonable. Regardless, you get the feeling that a substantial number of our ‘angry mob’ may not part with their hard earned cash. While financially this can not be a good thing, it may be what we need. Since relegation from the Premier League, Bramall Lane has housed an atmosphere as spiky and hostile as any I’ve been in. Unfortunately that hostility is rarely directed at the away team. I’m not suggesting that I’m happy with the performances that we are seeing at present, but the fact is that since our relegation the second nature of our most vocal followers has been to chastise rather than cheer. We need to return to having a fan base that turn out week in week out because they simply can not begin to imagine Saturdays without United. At the minute there seem to be too many who are there waiting for us to regain our ‘deserved’ top flight status. It pains me to say it but as things stand I don’t think that the club or the fans deserve anything. When the curtain comes down on this season, it seems that nothing is precisely what we’ll get.
