CUE BALL EVENT RAISES OVER £27,000 FOR LOCAL CHARITY SIXTIES EXTRAVAGANZA Local businesses and sporting heroes have ‘cued’ up to raise money for a Sheffield charity and highlight the start of one of the country’s biggest sporting attractions - the Betfred.com World Snooker Championships.

The seventh annual Sheffield Cue Ball event held on Friday 16 April, raised over £27,000 for local charity ‘Neurocare’.

donations from many businesses will assist in funding high tech equipment at the Hallamshire hospital to help patients with debilitating neurological conditions. Lesley Eland, Neurocare Chief Executive said: “The money raised by Cue Ball will help to save and change the lives of people affected by neurological conditions and I would like to say a huge thank you to all those involved in making the evening such a great

success.”

Kier Sheffield, Interserve, and Capita jointly sponsored the event, which launched the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship in Sheffield. The evening started with a Champagne reception at the Winter Garden followed by fine dining and entertainment at the luxury Mercure St Paul’s Hotel & Spa, Sheffield. Cue Ball 2010 was hosted by snooker MC Rob Walker and featured live music from local band Sharp

Cuts.

Over 250 people joined snooker legends including Dennis Taylor and Willie Thorne in what Mick Crofts, Event Organiser described as “a spectacular evening

illustrating the strong local backing that exists for the World Snooker Championship and the generosity of Sheffield businesses in supporting local good causes.”

Also from the music scene, a big hello to Trevor Thomas, presenter of the Breakfast Show on Magic AM. His weekly column will keep you up to date on all the happenings in the 60s, 70s and 80s music scene in the region—catch him every morning on the radio!

We are also delighted to have Clint Walker —a respected angling correspondent who has agreed to write a regular weekly column for the Mercury. He will update our readers on the best places to fish, review new tackle, and generally keep us up to date with the fishing world.

LESLEY LOVES NEW YORK

…as she opts to take ‘best mum in the world’ on prize holiday Lesley Brooks (42) from Whiston in Rotherham has scooped the top prize of £1500 in holiday vouchers and £500 in spending money in the national I Love New York competition run by O’Briens, the everyday gourmet café franchise. She posted her winning entry form when she had lunch with her mum Margaret in O’Briens at Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre, Sheffield.

“Mum also entered the O’Briens competition and we said that in the unlikely event either of us won, we would take each other on holiday,” said Lesley, an Environment Agency coaching specialist who trains new advisors at its Rotherham base.

“I never win anything so was over the moon when I heard about the win and had no hesitation in asking the best mum in the world to join me. We are both so excited.

Although the vouchers can be used for any holiday booked with Barrhead Travel, we’ve opted for a trip to New York later this summer.”

Lesley usually makes a monthly trip to Crystal Peaks with her mum, as they love the shops and the environment there and always enjoy a visit to O’Briens. On hand to give them a warm

INHERITANCE BLUES A man in a bar sees a friend at a table, drinking by himself.

Approaching the friend he comments, “You look terrible. What’s the problem?”

“My mother died in August,” his friend replied, “and left me £25,000. Then in September my father died, leaving me £90,000.”

“Losing both parents in two months. No wonder you’re depressed.”

“And last month my aunt died, and left me £15,000.” His friend continued.

“Three close family members lost in three months? How sad.”

“Then this month,” concluded, the friend, “absolutely nothing!”

A CASE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY A drunken man walked into a bar and, after staring for some time at the only woman seated at the bar, walked over to her and kissed her. She jumped up and slapped him silly.

He immediately apologised and explained, “I’m sorry. I thought you were my wife. You look exactly like her.”

The aircraft are back flying again now the dust has settled, and I can confirm that the problem was not caused by the cleaner at Bramall Lane dusting the trophy cabinet.

The reason that all airports were left with hundreds of grounded planes was of cause the erupting volcano in Iceland which shot volcanic debris eight miles into the atmosphere. How powerful is that? If only this energy could be harnessed, it would be a great source of energy supply.

As these eruptions happen on a regular basis, why have we not had this disruption before? I blame Gordon Brown.

The havoc caused has been amazing, with holidaymakers stuck abroad, having run out of money, and a great many, stuck here at airports, unable to reach their holiday destinations, having in many cases, saved up all year. The whole situation is intolerable.

I am very pleased to announce that my very good friend Gary Sinclair is now on the road to recovery after a life threatening cerrubellar stroke. Had I known how seriously ill Gary was, I would not have eaten all his biscuits and drunk his tea whilst visiting him in Chesterfield Royal Hospital. I should say that the food in this fine hospital is a gourmet delight, and those responsible deserve enormous credit. Gary did in fact make it to Bramall Lane for the final home match, which the Blades won two nil. I did actually recommend to Gary that he should have a good bet on them at the exceedingly generous price of seven to four.

The Foreign Office is quite rightly in hot water, following a leaked document suggesting ideas for Pope Benedict XVI’s proposed visit to this country.

Suggestions such as launching Benedict condoms, opening an abortion clinic and apologising for the Spanish Armada are clearly offensive to all Roman Catholics (I am not of that faith incidentally) and the minion involved has been disciplined and transferred to another department, for something that is clearly a sacking offence. The Foreign Office has had to make an unprecedented apology to the Vatican, but I suspect that this matter is far from over. On the positive side, they, (The Catholic Church) must be grateful for anything that deflects attention from the disgusting child abuse scandal involving many of their priests. It begs the question of who can you trust in this day and age?

There is exciting things happening at the Moorview Golf Centre and Driving Range. Boss Robert Knox and resident professional Robbie Bennett have taken over the golf shop, which has to be the best golf professional shop for miles around.

The shop is very large and sells a great variety of clubs, balls, golf bags and everything associated with the sport.I wish them both good fortune in this new venture. Events such as the recent American Masters tournament at Augusta and the forthcoming Ryder Cup, surely the best sporting event of the year, do much to enhance trade at this very well run establishment.

The sight of Gordon Brown electioneering with an admittedly fairly good Elvis impersonator really showed the actions of a desperate man. The cartoonists caption should read ‘The Labour Party, just like Elvis, is dead and buried. My apologies go out to any readers who still think Elvis is really alive, but would advise them not to believe everything they read in the Sunday Sport, which is hardly the newspaper for intellectuals, but really manages to titillate the imagination of all male readers and a few women, I suspect.

I have just watched a very important football match with West Brom completely outplaying a very ordinary physical Crystal Palace who as a result of the draw must now play my beloved Owls for the final relegation place from the Championship league. Trust me ,Owls fans, we have nothing to fear and gird your loins for six points from the piggies next season.I had many texts from Craig (How Much) Daniels throughout the game and really got the feeling that he desperately wants Wednesday to survive.

Craig, despite being a bigot at times, is a really good lad and a top mate. His charity night for Help for Heroes raised £1720, which was a tremendous effort.

THE TRAVELLING BACK TO THE BAND FUTURE(HEADS) Manchester six-piece The Travelling Band have just released their new single, Sundial which was released through the Sideways Saloon imprint on the 26th of April.

Sundial, the first single to be released from their forthcoming (as yet untitled) second album demonstrates a massive leap forward for The Travelling Band.

Dispensing with the need for a verse, Sundial instead centres around a glorious refrain which circles around, swelling as it does to include strings, horns, harmonies and a gleeful euphoria. And their Myspace description goes on to say; “Their lives dwindle in unemployment and expensive jackets so that they can “sign on” whilst looking the part”.

Special guests are “Marmalade Sun” who describe themselves as a Powerpop combo with hints of 60’s melodic pop but with a bit of a kick. Resident “DJ Stevlor And The Spinning Orphans” will be entertaining your ears with a mixture of sounds encompassing Freakbeat, Psych, and rare 60s underground. DJ Stevlor is Sheffield Photographer Stevlor once creator and editor of now defunct underground music mag Coma (pity!) and infamous in certain circles but then again those circles tend to be square! Go support this night because it’s getting quite a following for itself and anything that promotes Sheffield bands has the thumbs up from me (Imagine a Paul McCartney thumbs aloft pose...Oh never mind just go its good!)

The Futureheads make their return with a bold new sound at a time of uncertainty and confusion for their country and beyond. As the public face collective decisions over their future with very little clarity or guidance, The Futureheads bravely promise renewed hope.

The Chaos is the band’s fourth album, and arguably their most riotous to date.

Following high-profile support slots with The Pixies and Foo Fighters, this four-piece from Sunderland have taken heed of these rock heavyweights and written songs that rip through walls with the scale and sheer force of their delivery.

artist: Train album: Soul Sister release date: Mon 3rd May

Train are virtually unknown over here, but in the USA they’re massive. Train achieved mainstream success with their debut album, Train, which was released in 1998.

Their second album, Drops of Jupiter brought the band massive popularity.

The lead single from the album, “Drops of Jupiter”, was an international hit and won two Grammy Awards in 2002. The album was certified double platinum in the United States and Canada and remains the band’s best-selling album to date.

Their third studio album, My Private Nation, released in 2003, continued the band’s success, and was certified platinum in the United States. The band released their fourth album, For Me, It’s You in 2006. Despite a generally positive reception from critics, the album was commercially unsuccessful. Train then went on a three-year hiatus. Train re-united and released their latest album, Save Me, San Francisco in 2009. This single from that very album is all over the radio at the moment and as soon as you hear it you’ll instantly know why they’re huge over the pond.

They have that real acceptable face of America stamped all over them, music that is very well put together, sounds pretty cool and certainly wont offend anyone. I’m surprised they’ve not really cracked it over here, but if you’re massive in the US would you be bothered with this little island? I certainly wouldn’t.

The female David Coulthard (as I like to call her affectionately) returns with a tune which aint that far from a version of disco.

Its high energy, very up-tempo, very pop, extremely commercial and wouldn’t go amiss on a Kylie album (listen to how the backing vocals are done to hear what I mean). This will be a hit without a doubt, if only for the fact that she seemingly gets on everything when she has product out.

Not a bad track if you like a bit of cheese.

Hi Everyone, Craig “Howmuch” here from Firth Park WMC. Well, we pulled it off yet again with, what I believe, was the best show in Yorkshire never mind Sheffield At last Friday’s St Georges night Help For Heroes Show.

The paint on the re-designed stage was dry with just minutes to spare and thanks goes out to the lads Ben & Vinny who worked into the early hours to get fitted and working in time our new fantastic stage backdrop which anyone who has seen it working must agree that it has to be one of the best in Clubland, well done lads.

I have to, must, thank Keith & Stephanie at the CeeBee Variety Agency and the following acts for giving up their time free of charge to entertain the packed concert room at Firth Park WMC which is no mean feat considering the size of it, to the rafters.

A massive thanks to Stephanie King our compere on the night who drove the evening on with class and skill. Stephanie also put in a belting shift with her Stage Show, a fantastic advert for the

In February, I received an email, suggesting that I attempt The Cutlers Challenge! £50 cash and 6 months to turn it into...... well thousands - hopefully!

I like a challenge and I checked with the organisers and I could undertake the challenge on my own.

On 18th March I was invited to the launch of The Cutlers Challenge at The Cutlers Hall in Sheffield, and there I realised I was up against the big boys – uh oh! Supermarkets, Banks and other huge companies were all taking part – and little old me!

So what could I do? What would be fun, interesting and more importantly involve tons of people

The second is 2real with Glyn out of Men’s Club, although we only do a couple of gigs a month. After being mates for years, we thought it would be good to team up and do a night of party stuff and this is available through IMA management.

As well as the duos I do the odd solo show but not too many.

Look out for Fallen From Hell and 2real locally and come and have a beer.

There are also a couple of charities where you can catch us - firstly Wednesday 26th May at Eastwood View for the Neurology Department of Hallamshire Hospital. Scott Anson and Fallen From Hell and 2real are confirmed but I‘m sure there will be more – tickets are £2.50 a ticket from the acts or the club.

The second charity is on June 4th at Dalton Progressive with six acts plus Fallen From Hell - a fiver a ticket available from Showtime UK and the club.

For all you people in the Mercury distribution area we have a proposition for you-a proposition that will boost your takings way beyond your wildest modern day dreams!

Last August we held a “Smokers Music Festival” at the Jolly Brewer Public House in Lincoln centre. OK, we couldn’t hold it inside but the licensee, sick to death of this restrictive ban had a rear garden of reasonable proportions, not massive but reasonable with a covered area along one side.

As business was so bad for the local bands she offered them the opportunity for a one hour spot to show off their talents-and free beer. Emma sold tickets at £3 a go to cover the costs of the beer & ‘doormen’ etc. Fair play to her for that! We advertised locally and on the internet in the 3 short weeks we had to do so and hoped the message had been broadcast enough.

We need not have worried on that score at all as, on the night, 234 people turned up to enjoy the night. Freedom2choose had a small but prominent area to place a stall with all the information available on the dire state of the smoking ban and all the lies that ensured it was carried through on the ‘free vote’ ordered by Tony Blair-Free Vote? Yeah, righty so then! Misinformed MPs told it was a free vote - but there was only one way Liam Donaldson wanted the vote to go is what happened. Smokers were once again ‘harpooned’ before the ‘honourable members’ even trooped off to the ‘ayes’ and ‘no’s’ doors!

Back to the music night folks.

234 people turned up for the event, including 6 non smokers.

Everyone had a whale of a time, we ran out of information packs (we thought 200 would be plenty!) and the night, supposedly finishing at 11.30 pm actually went on until 1.00am such a brilliant night it was.

The licensee had not taken so much money in beer sales since she had been there and has actually been able to afford a small winter break because of that night-her first in 3 years!

The only stipulation we laid down was that smokers did not insult the licensee by absent mindedly waltzing into the pub with a cigarette (lit or unlit) for we were sure an EHO would be present.

Needless to say we are repeating the Music Festival Night this year and plans are afoot to turn it into a 2 nighter this year-but we will see.

So there you have it folks the question is obvious to all.

Do you have a venue/pub that could host a music night such as the Jolly Brewer?

Do you have the capacity to entertain in excess of 200 happy smokers?

Do you have local bands ‘busting a gut’ for the chance of showing off their talents for an hour one night?

A young lad by the name of Mark Ellis, once of the Space Cadets, now off on the solo road, opened the show and was very bouncy and was enjoying his spot as much as the crowd who gave the very best of order for all the acts. Nice one Mark!.

We were then treated to a spot from the one and only Miss Duracell bunny herself the Brilliant Bev Brookes, who as always had them eating out her hand and is another act who is outstanding value when not working charity nights and never fails to give 110% whenever on stage and believe it or not is just as nice and bubbly off stage.

Now the next act was our very own Firth Park WMCs Gordon Carr. I have spoken to Gordon many times over the years while in the club and have only just found out that he was a semi prosinger mainly around the pubs, and when he offered his services to me for our St Georges Help for Heroes (well the price was right lol) I said of course.

I saw Gordon a while before his spot and I must say I was worried

as he was shaking like a whippet before a race,oh dear! But thee of little faith Craig! Gordon Carr nailed it, nice little line in patter and belted out his selection of songs with gusto and was very well received by all. I now have no worries whatsoever about asking Gordon to perform his whole act on the big stage at ours in the future. Well done Gordon!

Our Comic Mr Johnnie Casson, was outstanding and had the crowd in stiches with his stories and jokes, and I for one can’t remember him F-ing and Blinding to get his laughs even if he did mump a bit about having to go on stage so late? But a class act and true pro when on stage without doubt.

I would also like to thank Mr Kevin Mitchell and his team who came over from Wombwell to set up and man the Help For Hereos Stall at the club. At the moment I’m not sure what Kev made on the night but I’m proud to report that we at Firth Park WMC made £1700 for the charity on the night and I thank you all who came and made it the night it was.

Fantastic loyal support yet again for our St Georges day Concert. I started it 4 years ago and we were the first and we will always try and put on the best show we can for you down here at Firth

Park WMC, as long as you good people out there in clubland stand by and carry on supporting us and we have the people willing within the club itself to help out, thank you everyone you know who you are.

I would also like to thank everyone at the Mercury Newspaper for the help and support with the adverts and reminders/plugs of the event, cheers Howard the Blade, lol, and also everyone who was kind enough to donate raffle prizes and items for the sports raffle.

I have now somehow got to better the above show next year which drops on a Saturday and at this moment in time am talking with the committee about removing a few windows from each side of the concert room thus allowing room for the Red Arrows fly through before the bingo next St Georges night, and I’m waiting by the phone as I type waiting for Lady Ga Ga and the Rolling Stones to get back to me about next year.

I’ve just come back from a long weekend by the sea – Bridlington, Filey and, believe it or not, my first ever visit to Scarborough!

Seaside holidays for me when I was growing up were more dominated by the North Wales coast than the North Yorkshire coast, but having experienced it, I’ll definitely be back and especially so since one of my old friends now runs a café on the sea front there.

On the air, we’ve been gearing up for a night featuring some of the finest South Yorkshire legends our area has produced.

This coming Friday’s night show at Sheffield City Hall will feature Joe and Sav from Def Leppard, Tony Christie, Heaven 17 and the multi talented John Parr.

After cutting his teeth some thirty years ago with Ponders End, John went on to score massive success working with some of the biggest names in the industry from Meat Loaf to Roger Daltrey. Following success with St Elmo’s Fire, from the film of the same name, he’s gone on to work on a range of blockbuster movies but will be back in front of the microphone again.

It’s a night paying tribute to legendary Sheffield broadcaster, charity worker and former colleague of mine Dave Kilner. During his thirty years at our radio station, Dave worked tirelessly to help so many good causes, and as champion of our own local music scene became friend to the stars on the bill, along with well known TV impressionist Jon Culshaw who is also appearing, having worked as a DJ alongside Dave.

I’ve often been asked if I get paid to go fishing, whether I make enough money from writing about it to make it a job, and what else do I get out of it?

The answers are that yes, I suppose in a way I do get paid to go fishing. No! I will never make enough to make it a job (at least not yet!) and as to what else I get out of it, well, I get to review some fantastic new tackle items and baits (and some poor ones) and then often get to continue using them. I meet some lovely people and see some lovely places, and sometimes get a day ticket thrown in!

Could you do it? Of course you could. I’m no angling ‘expert’, I’m not sponsored as such, so I have no huge advantages over the ‘everyday’ angler, and I don’t have time to spend weeks on the bank in order to catch fish, (I have a full time job too) so I suppose I’m just like thousands of other anglers all over the UK. Luck has played a huge part in where I am now.....

My job is as a fire-fighter; as part of my work, I’m tasked with finding new ways to promote fire safety and get the local

community involved with what we do. After much thought, I decided to try writing a monthly newspaper column detailing station life, the incidents we attended, and the current safety advice. Approaching the local free newspaper editor, I offered the piece in return for the opportunity of exposure.

He accepted the idea, and ‘Hoselines’ was the result!

500 words per month, published in a paper with a circulation of around 16000; good start, but could I do better? About a year later, I had the chance to move the column to a more mainstream local newspaper that carried the format on as before for the following 2 years. By this time, I’d got used to deadlines, found my own style and had an idea of how to construct something fairly readable.

Having posted a few ideas and tutorials on angling websites and forums, I received an invitation to write a piece for www. northwestcarp.co.uk, based around Cheshire and Staffordshire; this lead to introductions to other site editors, and eventually to ‘Carp and Coarse Angler’ magazine. A couple of 4/5 page spreads complete

with pictures really set me off thinking that I would like to be more involved in the angling media. Up to this point, all my writing had been done in return for exposure, now I wanted to see if I could earn from it!

I wrote and sent emails to lots of different publishers, websites and manufacturers until I gained an opportunity with a weekly national carp magazine as a columnist, and better still, it was paid! Now, a year or two down the line, I’m fortunate enough to be backed (not sponsored) by a couple of quality bait companies and I get to review items for a company called ACE. I write two weekly columns, have four websites that I regularly contribute to and submit other articles where I can as ‘hard copy’. It all leads to a new angle on my fishing and gives me something else to think about while I’m on the bank. As I said at the beginning, I’ve been very lucky, but if you fancy a go at writing about your fishing, why not try it? You never know where it may lead to!!

My advice suffered a pretty torrid time at the last NH Festival at Punchestown (only one winner – Golden Silver on Tuesday - but even its 12/1 SP could not fully offset the losses of my other selections).

Elusive Pimpernel is second top in my system and should go well. Of the others Viscount Nelson (another Aidan O’Brien trained horse) holds a decent each way shout at big odds if he runs and both Awzaan and Hearts Of Fire have good form in the book and consequently have fair each way claims. I also like Dick Turpin as best of the Richard Hannon trained pair. However, I am not convinced that Canford Cliffs will get the trip in a truly run race. MILLERS COME HOME WITH THE POINTS Rotherham United recorded a well-deserved 1-0 victory at League Two strugglers Barnet to strengthen their claims for a play off spot.

Kevin Ellison’s first half free kick proved the difference, but the Millers dominated the game and could easily have won more comfortably.

After two minutes it was Pablo Mills who had the first effort of the game. The ball broke kindly to Mills on the edge of the area but his rasping drive was off target and well wide of Jake Cole’s near post.

On 17 minutes a corner from Josh Walker was flicked on by Nick Fenton but after a scramble in the area Marcus Marshall couldn’t find the room necessary to shoot for goal.

The Millers came agonizingly close to opening to scoring on 21 minutes. Adam Le Fondre was brought down 25 yards out with the resulting free kick taken by Walker. The Middlesbrough loanee curled a pinpoint effort to Cole’s right but with the ‘keeper beaten Walker was denied by the inside of the post.

The Palace House Stakes appears to be a match between Equiano and Borderlescott. Much as I like Borderlescott this time I am going for Equiano.

In the 1,000 Guineas on Sunday I like the look of a few: As I said last week Music Show looked to have trained on well when winning the Nell Gwynn, but Revered and Termagant now don’t run so I have now narrowed the field down to four or five. However I suggest you hold your bets until the day as some of my fancies may not run.

My top rated is Hibaayeb (currently quoted at a decent each way price of 25/1) and as a Godolphin trained winner of an Ascot Group 1 last year she has to have a leading chance if she runs. That day she narrowly beat Lady Darshaan (my second top rated) who, at the current 33/1, also holds a leading each way chance at good odds if she runs.

As I have said above Music Show looks to have trained on and has to be considered. She is currently quoted at 6/1. Of the others I like the form of Pollenator (currently showing at 14/1) and Puff has each way claims at 25/1.

Of them all I think that Hibaayeb has probably the best form on offer so she is the selection.

Ronnie praise for excellent Millers Ronnie Moore described the Millers display at Barnet as ‘fantastic’ as Rotherham United edge closer to securing a playoff place with a 1-0 victory at Underhill.

The Millers looked in control throughout the game and took a deserved lead through a Kevin Ellison free kick before half time.

Josh Walker and Ellison again also hit the woodwork with Millers ‘keeper Andy Warrington a virtual spectator throughout the 90 minutes.

“I think we bossed the game,” said Ronnie.

“We went a little deep late on and they threw caution to the wind. If we had been a little more ruthless in attack then we could have put the game to bed earlier but it was a fantastic performance, just what we needed.”

Ronnie reserved special praise for Ellison, who following a spell out of the Millers starting 11, has come back with some of his best form of the season.

“I thought Kevin Ellison was back to his best, he was magnificent,” he added.

“His goal was a good one, he has gone past people, he worked hard, he was moaning and groaning at people which is what you want, I thought he was excellent today.”

There was a hint of controversy about the Millers winner with the home side appealing in vein for an offside flag.

“They were saying that one of our lads was stood in front of the ‘keeper and was in an offside position which was nonsense really,” admitted Ronnie.

“It was a goal and there was no doubt about that.”

DESPERATE OWLS LOSE OUT IN WALES - BUT ITʼS NOT OVER YET The Owls were defeated 3-2

by Cardiff City - a result which now leaves Wednesday’s Championship survival hopes hanging by a thread.

Jermaine Johnson gave the Owls an early lead only for Peter Whittingham to level the scores almost immediately from a free kick. Jay Bothroyd turned the game on its head as he scored his ninth goal of the season in the 54th minute.

Wednesday were level with 13 minutes remaining as Marcus Tudgay finished neatly past David Marshall in the Cardiff goal but Bothroyd was on hand minutes later to score his second and Cardiff’s winner in an entertaining clash in the Welsh capital.

Defeat at Cardiff now means that Wednesday can be relegated on Monday should Crystal Palace beat West Bromwich Albion on Monday at Selhurst Park.

Sheffield Wednesday made one change at the Cardiff City Stadium with Tom Soares returning to the starting line-up in place of Leon Clarke, who dropped to the bench.

Owls boss Alan Irvine selected an attacking side with Tudgay, Johnson and Luke Varney at the forefront of a 4-3-3 formation.

But it was the hosts who threatened first after four minutes with Darcy Blake and Jay Bothroyd both forcing Lee Grant into two quickfire saves.

Blake let fly with a strike from 20 yards which Grant pushed over the bar and from the resulting corner, the ball fell to Bothroyd, who thumped his shot goalwards, producing another fine reaction save from the Wednesday keeper.

The Owls responded well to those early attacks from the Bluebirds and almost took the lead when Darren Potter curled a free kick over the wall, only to see David Marshall make a top-drawer save, pushing onto the post.

And on 15 minutes, the visitors did get their noses in front, much to the delight of the travelling army of Wednesdayites.

Tom Soares took possession inside the area and fizzed a low ball across the six-yard box which Johnson tapped home from close range.

The lead didn’t last long, though, as Cardiff were level just two minutes later through top scorer Whittingham. The prolific midfielder took aim from a free kick 25 yards out and hammered over the wall and into the net to claim his 23rd goal of the season.

There was a good response from Wednesday after being pegged back. Darren Purse managed to rise above a crowded penalty area from Tommy Spurr’s corner to head goalwards but Marshall saved well.

Minutes later, it was mayhem in Cardiff’s 18-yard box as the Owls threatened to retake the lead. City were throwing bodies into challenges and the ball eventually fell to Soares, who blazed high over the crossbar.

minutes before the break as he tore towards goal, one-on-one with Grant, but the Owls keeper made a good one-handed save from the striker’s header.

In what was an extremely entertaining and lively first period, Grant was at the heart of the action once more at the last as he was down quickly to parry Bothroyd’s free kick out for a corner.

Wednesday made a change at half time with Leon Clarke replacing the Owls goalscorer Johnson.

And straight from the restart, Bothroyd threatened to give Cardiff the lead but his powerful run through the middle ended with a shot just over the bar.

Whittingham came close to doubling his tally on 51 minutes as his shot from distance went wide by a whisker.

Cardiff had looked dangerous in the early stages of the second period and took the lead on 54 minutes through Bothroyd. An accurate long ball forward from Stephen McPhail picked out the big striker who calmly rolled the ball past Grant.

Irvine introduced Francis Jeffers into the action in place of Soares just after the hour mark as the Owls looked to get back on level terms.

Tudgay threatened to do just that as he picked the ball up deep in opposition territory but placed his shot just wide of Marshall’s goal.

In a final throw of the dice for Wednesday, Etienne Esajas was thrown into the mix from the bench and that move almost gave the Owls a crucial goal.

Esajas picked up possession on the right before cutting inside to shoot just wide of Marshall’s left hand post.

But with 13 minutes to go Wednesday got a crucial lifeline as Tudgay finished from the tightest of angles past Marshall.

Esajas played a neat ball over the top and Tudgay did well to place beyond the Cardiff keeper.

But as Wednesday threatened a dramatic turnaround - Cardiff were back in front less than four minutes later. Bothroyd was the man again as he blasted his shot on target from outside the area leaving the net bulging from his fierce strike.

The day was summed up for the Owls in the last minute when Esajas’ strike from 30 yards came crashing back off the inside of the post and out for a goal kick.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine emerged from Cardiff City disappointed following the 3-2 defeat in the Welsh capital.

The Owls boss was critical of his side’s defending, stating that had he been told before the game that Wednesday would score twice, he would have expected all three points.

“We’re not a side that concedes a lot of goals,” said Irvine. “So if you’d have told me that we would score twice at Cardiff, I would expect to win the game.

“But we gave away some sloppy goals, our defending was not good enough and we were punished. I thought both sides were better today with the ball than without.”

The Bluebirds reverse leaves Wednesday pinning their hopes on West Brom preventing Crystal Palace post a victory at Selhurst Park on Monday.

Defeat for the already-promoted Baggies would spell relegation for the Owls and Irvine will be in attendance for the live TV clash.

“West Brom will not be out to do us any favours, they will be playing for themselves, just as Cardiff did this afternoon. It will be a very honest game and that’s the beauty of football in this country.”

DOUBLE COUP A VIEW FOR GRANT FROM THE Owls keeper Lee Grant did the double at the club’s Player of the Year awards dinner on Sunday night at Hillsborough.

Grant scooped both the SWFC Player of the Year title and that of Players’ Player of the Year to complete a memorable coup.

Other winners unveiled in a packed 1867 Lounge were Etienne Esajas, who lifted the Goal of the Season title for his long range strike at Bramall Lane in September, and Liam Palmer, who was recognised as the Academy Player of the Year.

For the ever-popular Grant, the awards reflect another excellent campaign between the S6 sticks - although the former Derby man did acknowledge he would rather the award went to a striker.

He exclusively told swfc.co.uk: “This is really pleasing for me on a personal note, especially the award from the players because - while it’s nice to be recognised by the fans - the players’ award is particularly satisfying as it comes from your fellow professionals and team mates.

Winston Churchill coined a phrase for almost any situation but this particular one is ideal to express the gratitude that we owe West Bromwich Albion after their point against Crystal Palace on Monday.

West Brom have rekindled my faith in the integrity of the modern day professional footballer. They didn’t have to stand toe to toe and trade blows with a rabid Palace team, nor did they have to care about any ramifications that their performance may have on a team they owe nothing to. Come to think of it, they may not have been bothered about thousands of alien fans willing them to perform but nevertheless, their attitude and application was highly commendable. This was a gesture we shouldn’t forget in a hurry.

BLADES GIVE FANS VICTORY IN LAST HOME GAME In the final home game of the season, United sent the fans home with renewed optimism thanks to a deserved win over Swansea City.

The Blades may not be in the play-off picture any longer this season but had a say in the final placings of the top six after the Welsh visitors dropped into seventh position.

Richard Cresswell scored the game’s first goal and had a big hand in the second but Paddy Kenny marked his performance with a fine performance and well-earned clean sheet.

Kenny and Naysmith both made their first appearances of the season, forming part of five changes made by boss Blackwell for the visit Swansea.

Kenny returned after his FAimposed suspension, whilst Naysmith had been out for year with a knee ligament injury.

Bartley, Little and Camara were also back in the starting line-up. On the bench, Estonian goalkeeper Aksalu was joined

by Evans and Geary. For the visitors, ex United loanee Dyer started but Cotterill was only amongst the substitutes.

In the late season sunshine, Kenny received a rapturous welcome before kick-off and all his early touches were greeted with cheers from the crowd. He was forced into his first save on 14 minutes, dropping to his right to keep out Pratley’s effort, then Bartley blocked from Kuqi and Gower fired wide.

A couple of corners were all the Blades had to show for their early efforts, although the action was even. From a Little run, Camara’s shot was crowded out but Swansea were quickly back on the offensive and Kenny saved from Gower.

continued when Quinn limped off just after the half hour mark, replaced by Yeates, then Swansea thought they should have been awarded a penalty on 40 minutes when Montgomery fouled Pratley on the edge of the box. The subsequent free-kick from Bessone was tremendously tipped around the post by Kenny.

The home side’s best chance of the half was a bizarre affair on 44 minutes. Nosworthy’s pull back following a run down the right saw Dyer and Montgomery reach the ball at the same time and the ricochet spun up and just wide of the goal with goalkeeper DeVries particularly nervous.

The only noteworthy action of the additional period before the half-time break was the first booking of the game, picked up by Cresswell for a foul on Britton.

Yeates had a bright start to the second half, his first cross was collected by DeVries but was not far from Camara and then the winger’s shot was blocked

by Rangel. Once again Kenny was called upon, this time to claw away a Bessone free-kick.

Pratley was a continual threat and he twice came close to giving Swansea the lead in the space of two minutes. Firstly, his header from Rangel’s cross hit team-mate Kuqi and then his half-volley from the edge of the penalty area was acrobatically saved and held by Kenny.

Pratley also had another penalty appeal turned down before the Blades grasped the lead.

On 62 minutes, a Yeates delivery from the left was deflected

by Rangel into the path of CRESSWELL, who turned in an instant and fired a half-volley across DeVries, into the top corner.

A number of changes in personnel occurred soon after. Evans, Cotterill and Seip, the latter for the tiring Naysmith, were brought into the fray. Swansea wasted a golden chance to level

on 67 minutes when Pratley put Gower in the clear but the midfielder fired across goal and wide.

All substitutions were completed on 75 minutes when Sousa made a double change and United were coming under increasing pressure as Swansea looked to salvage at least a point. Nosworthy, now at leftback, blocked from Kuqi and survived a penalty shout when he collided with Gower. Montgomery picked up a booking for a foul on Rangel.

Late on, after stemming Swansea’s attacks, it was United who went on the attack. On 87 minutes, from a looped Yeates pass, a volley from Evans was saved

by DeVries at his near post and then Yeates himself fired over.

The points, however, were secured in the 90th minute with United’s second goal. From a breakaway, Evans, Little and Cresswell were involved and it was the latter’s pull-back that caught the inside of DEVRIES’ leg and trickled over the line at the Kop end.

In added time, Kenny kept out Gower’s free-kick, Yeates’ back heeled effort was straight at DeVries and the last action saw Bartley clear away Trundle’s cross.

United closed their home programme with lap of the pitch to thank the fans for their support throughout the season.

The perils of pressure Pressure can do funny things to football teams, and it has had a marked effect on Sheffield United’s fortunes this season.

After last week’s pulsating draw on the other side of the city, our play-off hopes became mathematically dead in the water and thoughts turned to how we will prepare for next season.

What we subsequently saw against Swansea on Saturday was the Blades play with out fear and take a commendable 2-0 victory against a very good footballing side.

There were similarities to the type of football we used to see when Kevin Blackwell first took charge of the team after Bryan Robson’s ill-fated spell with the club.

At this time we were just outside the relegation zone, with no thoughts of promotion and merely wanting someone to instill pride back in to the club.

Under this backdrop Kevin Blackwell got the team playing without fear and in a very fast, attractive and most importantly winning brand of football.

After last season’s play-off heartbreak the backdrop for this season could not have been more different; the fans wanted promotion, and would accept no less.

So after the selling on of most of the players who could have helped us achieve this, plus a crippling injury list, we have had a difficult and ultimately unsuccessful season.

Hopefully, our expectations will be lower next season, and considering the talk of reduced wage budgets and further player exits you assume that they will be.

I am uncharacteristically optimistic about next season, possibly buoyed by the impressive comebacks of Gary Naysmith and Paddy Kenny on Saturday.

A back four consisting of the aforementioned, plus our inspirational captain Chris Morgan has ‘solid’ written all over it.

So as long as we all keep our feet on the ground, there may be some potential for Blades’ success next season.

Gaffer’s verdict Kevin Blackwell praised his team for being professional enough to grind out a result against the odds when they beat Swansea, again with a much changed team.

And it seems that the injury curse has been determined to haunt him right to the death because two more of his squad have been struck down: “Swansea dominated possession and gave us a few sticky moments without really testing the goal until half-time when we got to grips with their two wide players.

“But after that we had some great chances and could have added more goals. Considering that we had to make five changes since last week, it showed a terrific spirit considering there wasn’t much riding on the game for us.

“Having said that, it was only right that we gave it everything we had because other teams would expect that of us, and I’m sure Ian Holloway at Blackpool owes me a drink.

“Next week Swansea will be hoping other teams fight as hard as we did today against their rivals to get results that will help them.”

There was special praise for the returning Paddy Kenny and Gary Naysmith, both of whom made their first appearances of the season: “Paddy was very accomplished, showed terrific concentration and looked as if he had never been away. He didn’t actually have a lot to do but when he did he made the right decisions and some decent saves.

“When you look behind you as a players and see Paddy Kenny in goal it is a big boost, not just because of his ability but also because he is our player and that makes a difference.

“And don’t forget Naysmith who hasn’t played since a year last April because of knee ligament damage. He handled Dyer well and we looked much more assured at left-back - no disrespect to the other lads who have played there.

With Lee Williamson and Stephen Quinn joining Darius Henderson and Andy Taylor, the United boss also revealed that no less than four of his players have already or will face surgery over the next few days: “Lee Williamson was in the team on Thursday but the medical team pulled me over and said that MRI scans had been looked at, and that the doctor advised he stop playing straight away to have another operation on his back.

“It is a repeat of last summer which cost him seven months and means it will be November before we can expect to see him.

“Stephen Quinn has nerve damage to his toe and will go under the knife, whilst Darius Henderson will have a groin operation and Andy Taylor has had surgery on his ankle ligaments.”
