ADVENTURE ON THE DOORSTEP AT CLIFFHANGER Cliffhanger, the UK’s biggest outdoor event for outdoor people, takes a fresh look at the world of outdoor activities when it returns to Sheffield on 2 and 3 July. For two days Millhouses Park, one of the city’s biggest green spaces, is transformed into a hub of adventure where outdoor sports enthusiasts and families brush shoulders with world champions and record breakers. Once again Cliffhanger will host the penultimate contest in the IFSC bouldering World Cup. Contestants will face a series of problems designed to test them to their limits on the biggest

bouldering wall in the world, constructed inside a stunning giant inflatable cube commissioned especially for the event by local company Airspace Structures. Alongside the main competition will be a smaller wall where primary school children can compete in their own inter-schools bouldering competition. Children aged between seven and 11 can just turn up on the day and earn points for their efforts, with the school with the most points at the end winning a free session for six children at the Climbing Works. The contest has been organised by Marlcliffe Primary

School, The Climbing Works, Thornbridge Outdoors and the Links School Sports Partnership, with outdoor equipment specialist Alpkit providing the wall. Outside the cube new attractions include a pump track - a loop with raised bumps and drops which cyclists can travel around at speeds of up to 20mph, using the body’s momentum instead of pedals. Cliffhanger is organised by Sheffield City Council in partnership with Heason Events. Councillor Leigh Bramall, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “Cliffhanger continues to go from

strength to strength and promises to be an exciting, action packed weekend. You can watch the experts and then try out some of the activities for free, making it great value for a day out. “What is great about Cliffhanger is how it gets youngsters involved – I know of children who had their first taste of climbing at the festival three years ago and are still climbing now.” Matt Heason from Heason Events added: “With a third of Sheffield’s boundary within the Peak District, the city has long had a draw for climbers, mountain bikers, runners and cavers and Cliffhanger is the ideal place

to be inspired by watching sportsmen and women at the top of their game. More than 20,000 people came last year.” World Dyno Champion Skyler Weeks, who comes over from the US every year especially for Cliffhanger, will be back in action. Last year he broke the world record for Dyno – where climbers use all their strength and power to leap as far as they can in a single move. Other stars to watch out for include Bobsleigh World Champion Nicola Minichiello, who will be appearing with Silverdale School’s four-man “Scool Runnings”, the world’s

first school bobsleigh team. Inspired by the film Cool Runnings, set in Jamaica, the team’s ultimate aim is to compete in the Winter Olympics. And elite boulderers Daniel Woods and Alex Puccio will be in action in the World Cup. Other attractions include a mini ‘seaside’ in the area around the fish ladder, complete with sand, beach huts and the Friends of Millhouses Park’s popular duck race. A giant 13 metre Ordnance Survey map of England and Wales, a hit with the youngsters in previous years, makes a welcome return. For further information, visit www.cliff-hanger.co.uk
