APPEAL TO FEEL THE BEAT FOR CHARITY People from across South Yorkshire are being urged to get behind a mass Zumbathon to raise vital funds for a charity appeal. The team behind the Sheffield Zumbathon which aims to raise money for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) is urging people to sign up for 50 minutes of Zumba, and raise money towards research to the Mending Broken Hearts Appeal.

Places are still available for the event at Don Valley Stadium on Sunday July 10, but people are being urged to register before the day to collect as much sponsorship as possible. The event organised in partnership with Sheffield International Venues (SIV) marks the Latin influence of Zumba with a festival experience and specialist instructors from SIV. Lauren Mallinson,

Fundraising Volunteer Manager, at BHF, said: “The Zumbathon is a great charity event as it’s so different being just 50 minutes of exercise which anybody can do as opposed to training for something like a 10k race. “Coronary heart disease is the UK’s biggest killer but it is something that we together can change with research. “It’s just £5 to sign up, and the money will

give hope to local heart patients living with life limiting conditions like heart failure. As an additional challenge, we’re asking people to aim to raise £50 in sponsorship – just £1 for every year of the BHF’s life-saving work. But if you can’t reach that target, just raise as much as you can as every penny counts. So come on everybody sign up today to take part in this fantastic event all in aid of a good cause!”

All money raised will go towards the appeal and fund the research that could begin to literally ‘mend broken hearts’ in as little as 10 years’ time. Dave Birds, Group Fitness Referral Manager at SIV, said: “We are delighted to partner up with the British Heart Foundation, a fantastic charity, helping to raise vital funds for their appeal. “At SIV, I work particularly close with

patients with a range of heart problems and have seen first hand how exercise can benefit them. Zumba is a great fitness regime that combines keeping fit and having fun which the Zumbathon is sure to deliver.” Zumba is the new cardio dance exercise that has taken Sheffield by storm over the last year, getting people fit by combining Latin dance steps with more traditional aerobic moves.

time out COPLEY’S COLUMN

Why is it that British sportsmen and women seem to continue to have a losing mentality? This week, we have witnessed Andy Murray, our best hope of having a men’s singles champion since Fred Perry won the title in 1935, being summarily dismissed by Raphael Nadal. There have been numerous postings on Facebook from, mainly women I should add, regarding his backside, with adjectives such as divine and peachy being commonplace. What nonsense, I am certain he is no different to the rest of us having a noisy smelly one, apart from Pippa Middleton of course. Also, we have a new generation of losers; with Liam Broady losing the boy’s final, despite winning the first set and breaking the service of opponent, Australia’s Luke Saville in the first game of the second set. Then the British disease set in and his game imploded. The next losing episode was the much publicised unification fight for the undisputed heavyweight boxing championship of the world, where after much pre-fight hype from our own David Haye about how he was going to destroy Vladimir Klitschko. Haye was totally outclassed, losing on points, lamely, if you will excuse the pun, blaming a broken little toe. Further embarrassment was heaped on the British public by the Sri Lankan cricket team, beating the England eleven twice in three days in one day fifty overs matches, despite new captain Alistair Cook scoring a century in the last match. Maybe a sports psychologist should be employed on a full time basis to eradicate this ‘born to lose ‘mind set. Wimbledon this year, despite the lack of British involvement, was however very exciting with the emergence of new ladies singles champion, Petra Kvitova, who beat the favourite Maria Sharapova, surely the

best looker in the tournament, in straight sets. Kvitova’s similarities with the legendary Martina Navratilova are amazing, they are both Czechs and left handed. In the much awaited men’s final, we saw lady’s heartthrob Nadal humbled by new world number one Novak Djokovic. On the home front, I was happy to accept invitations from good pals and great entertainers John Alex and Robb Harris for a lads night out watching a favourite band of mine, Fireacker, who have a new frontman, Rich. He really impressed me, showing great vocal talent, really looking as if he was really enjoying himself, and also evidencing that he was capable on keyboards. This was a great night out at the White Swan, Dronfield, and Saturday night at the Yew Tree with Junkyard Dog completed a superb week of pure class entertainment. Forthcoming events in my diary include watching the heats and final of the excellent ‘Search For a Star’ competition at the Pacific Bar, Chesterfield, throughout July and August, a concert at Chatsworth by the wonderful world number one Abba tribute band Bjorn Again and my favourite night of the year, the Mercury Awards night at Crookes Social Club. A charity night for ‘Sincere Support’ is to be held shortly at the Forest Showbar and further details will appear in this column. The most stupid decision ever has been made by the DVLA this week. A very close friend of mine lost an eye as a youngster in an accident. However, this proved not to be a handicap, and he spent his working life in the motor trade, becoming the most knowledgeable person about the mechanism of cars that I know, and an excellent driver. On reaching his seventieth birthday, he had to re-apply for his driving licence. Notwithstanding that he is probably a better driver than most, having an accident and conviction free history, it has been refused. This is utter madness.

round-up

in fact, it’s more like a naughty version of a daytime soap than it is a hard hitting and gritty TV series, but it’s still enjoyable enough, even if William H Macey doesn’t really do it for me as Frank Gallagher. Talking about TV, is it just me or does adding swearing to a show not make it adult? It’s clear the Americans feel the only way to make a show ‘mature’ is to proliferate every sentence with the F word. Well they can <bleep> off if they think they can <bleeping> well <bleep> with our beloved shows by adding loads of <bleeping> swearing and <bleeping> well forgetting to add any actual <bleep> content. We want nudity; we want adult situations, not a bunch of characters with Tourette’s Syndrome.

Red Faction: Armageddon Sequel to the ever popular Red Faction, RF:A is a first person shooter; a linear, dragged about on rails kind of game, but it has an awesome number of weapons, which means you can set about obliterating your enemies in all manner of exciting ways. The sci-fi storyline is genuinely gripping and the ability to ‘lock’ attacks on an enemy while you strafe makes this game particularly fun for those folk who are useless at shooting with a gaming controller (not that I’m in that category, of course <ahem>). Of particular interest is Ruin Mode, which sees you using unlimited weaponry to destroy the landscape. Really juicy! Score: 8/10. Entirely on the rails but what a great ride. If you like shooters, then this is the game to last you through the dull summer months. Lastly, it would be remiss of me not to mention Woodseats Festival this weekend the 9th and 10th of July, which takes place on Woodseats Road, S8. They’ve got Woofseats on Saturday on Barber’s Field, which is Woodseats’ very own version of Crufts and has loads of prizes for dogs of all kinds. Then there’s Woodseats Festival on Sunday from 11:00am which is a great day out for kids of all ages.

Sheffield 50+ - The Voice of Older People Heard Nationally

So you think you know GROUNDBREAKING ROLE TO TACKLE CRIME

POLICE and Council chiefs have joined together in a ground breaking new deal to help tackle crime across the city. Sheffield City Council and South Yorkshire Police have been working hand in hand to help keep crime rates down while at the same time promoting safety across the city. Now Chief Inspector Paul McCurry from South Yorkshire Police has been appointed as the joint Head of Community Safety across both authorities. Not only is this a first for the city but is also the first appointment of its kind in the country. It is also being heralded as the economic boost for Sheffield as it will mean shared resources, new technology and ideas, freeing up money for the city. The new role will mean both the Police and City Council can make better use of their combined resources. The appointment of Chief Inspector McCurry, from South Yorkshire Police, followed ring-fenced interviews to seniorlevel officers across both the police and council. The idea is to build on the reputation of Sheffield being the country’s safest city. Chief Inspector McCurry’s main role will be to help build stronger communities in Sheffield by working in partnership with city agencies to tackle persistent problem hot spots. This includes reducing anti-social behaviour while also reducing the number of victims of crime and supporting them. Part of his remit will also be to bring the Police and Council together in tackling wider issues like gun, knife and gang crime and domestic abuse. Already Chief Inspector Paul McCurry has been at the forefront of helping to set up Targeted Youth Support Teams – consisting of council and police officers - across the city. These work by attempting to steer youngsters away from crime. He has also been instrumental in helping South Yorkshire Police set up a Violence Reduction Team – one of only a handful of forces in the UK to have such a team. This includes a dedicated officer concentrating on social network sites to find images of people posing with weapons, promoting violence or other forms of anti-social behaviour. Speaking about his appointment Chief Inspector McCurry said: “Obviously I am delighted to have been given this highly prestigious new role. However, I now need to deliver for the city, making sure the Council and the Police are side by side standing up for local people. “I want to use my role to expand on the great work that has already been done in order for Sheffield to remain a safe city. I want to get into the heart of local communities to work with the people who live and work there. It is especially important to make sure we help the most vulnerable people and work around breaking the cycle of crime. This can only be done with a proper support network with Police, Council and community involvement. “This could be working with head teachers, community groups and youth club leaders as well as local residents. By teaming up we can effectively target resources to work in the best way for the people who experience or fear crime.”

Older, Wiser, Warmer Sarah Hardy, Heeley City Farm

Older members of two Sheffield communities were invited to a launch event hosted and supported by Zest in Upperthorpe for Older, Wiser, Warmer, an innovative new project which is being pioneered and co-ordinated by Heeley City Farm. The project, which is being funded thanks to a 3 year grant from Comic Relief and operates from the Energy Centre at the farm, is designed to encourage people aged 65 and over to become volunteer ‘Energy Champions’ within their local community. The Energy Centre has already coordinated the successful Family Fuel Busters project which aims to engage and educate school age children and their parents about energy saving and is hoping that this new project will do the same for older residents. ‘It’s really important to us that everyone knows how to use their heating controls to the best effect,’ said project co-ordinator Shelly Davis. ‘We’ll help older residents to get the best from their energy company and let them know of financial, and other, support available from local and national organisations.’ Members of the community who attended the launch were given information about the new project as well as information from organisations such as Sheffield 50+ and were treated to hand massages and given tips on how to stay healthy and active from Health Champions based at Zest.

Shelly explaining the project at the launch We wanted to launch the project with an event which showed an holistic approach to keeping warm, as well as giving people the more obvious energy saving tips.’ said Shelly ‘Gentle exercise, socialising and

treating yourself occasionally, all help to keep you active, warm and motivated. One lady who attended the event really enjoyed having her hands massaged because since her husband died she hadn’t really had any physical contact at all; it really made her day’ Five people enrolled as Energy Champions for the Upperthorpe and Netherthorpe areas in Sheffield at the event and more have come forward; all are now attending the first 8 week training programme designed to help them take appropriate steps towards energy efficiency and affordable warmth in their own homes and then to go out and show other older residents how to implement them in theirs. ‘Volunteers will attend our training programme for a couple of hours a week and this will support them in their ‘Energy Champion’ volunteer role. They will be involved with the project for a couple of hours a week for approximately six months. We will be looking to recruit 10 volunteers every 6 months from within 5 different communities in Sheffield.’ Shelly is currently working in the Upperthorpe/Netherthorpe community in partnership with Zest’s Community Health Team and local Health Champion volunteers. Later this year Older, Wiser, Warmer will move to Tinsley/Darnell and Shelly is interested in hearing from local older residents, local community organisations, health and learning champions in these areas who would like to be involved in the exciting new project. KILLAMARSH WAR MEMORIAL Provision of a war memorial in Killamarsh has taken another step forward following last week’s summer festival. Over £3000 was raised by a raffle which was drawn at the festival. Local trader Paul Laws from the Chequered Flag made a generous donation of £500 which was the first prize. Local resident Johnny Mullins was the lucky winner of the first prize and received his winnings from Paul Laws and Cllrs Bill Rice and Harold Laws at the site of the memorial. Cllr Rice who is the chair of the village War Memorial Committee said ‘local people have so far raised around £6000 towards the £9000 cost of the memorial and we are confident that the remainder will be raised before this year’s Remembrance Day.’ Paul Laws added ‘there is a tremendous will to see this happen. Last year Killamarsh residents stood in respect of Cpl Liam Riley and they are now determined that everybody who has given their life serving our country will be remembered by this visible memorial.’

Sheffield gets set for record breaking Run in the Park! Runners of all ages and abilities are gearing up to take part in a record breaking 10k run in aid of one of Sheffield’s most popular charities this Sunday. More than 1,000 runners have signed up to take part in Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s Run in the Park 10k Race and 3k Fun Run at Graves Park. This year’s race, which has attracted the highest number of entries since it began in 2009, will be started by former Olympic medal winner Jocelyn Hoyte-Smith, who is also donning her running shoes to take part in the 3k Fun Run. More than 1,600 runners have helped raised £50,000 for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity since the race first began, with funds being used to support cancer research and improve cancer treatment and

care at Weston Park Hospital Lyndsey Raynor, fundraiser at Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, said: “It is a fantastic event and we would like to thank all our supporters who are taking part in Run in the Park. “As in previous years we know there will be a great atmosphere and the money

raised will make a huge difference to the lives of cancer patients and their families.” Weston Park Hospital is one of only three dedicated cancer hospitals in the whole of the UK and serves patients from across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire.

CYCLING SUCCESS

Team completes John O’Groats to Land’s End cycle raising over £8,000 for local charities The Kier Sheffield cycling team has smashed its previous fundraising record with its latest challenge on two wheels. The team, made up of employees from the Sheffield-based repairs and maintenance company, has raised more than £8,000 for three local charities. The cyclists, with the aim of raising as much money as possible for local charities the Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, the Sheffield Autistic Society and Motor Neurone Disease Association, departed from John O’Groats on 28 May and cycled almost 1,000 miles to Land’s End in Cornwall, arriving on 3 June. The end to end bike ride was supported by a sponsored team cycle event on fixed bikes held at Ponds Forge international sports venue on 3 June, where more than ten teams cycled a whopping total of 1,079 miles in just five hours. Kier Sheffield regional managing director and member of the team, Simon Bullen, said: “Our trip was incredible. We all trained very hard for this challenge and had to overcome some difficult weather and cycling conditions so we are very proud to have achieved it. The sponsored event was also a fantastic success with people from across Sheffield supporting our efforts. We’d like to thank everyone who sponsored the cycling challenge, all those who participated in the supporting event and everyone who has donated and we look forward to planning another challenge for next year.” The team of cyclists consisted of Simon Bullen, Darren Crouch, Scott Murray, John Blackwell, Mark Hall and Dave Cooper, plus non-Kier Building Maintenance guests Tony Perry, Martin Colley, Bill Stubbins, Julie Bullen, Simon Hughes, Anthony Derbyshire and Judy Bird. Donations can be made via the team’s Just Giving website profile: www.justgiving.com/teams/KierE2EChallenge. All money raised will go directly to the charities. ASKERN SPA CLUB REVIVAL IS GOOD NEWS FOR CLUBLAND All too often we hear negative news about clubland and it’s great to hear about the revival and refurbishment of Askern

Spa club. In Sheffield we have recently seen the good news regarding the new investment in Boundary Academy and Chaucer Social Club and now we have the excellent news from Doncaster. Askern Spa have a lineup of topline acts coming to the club and it is certainly worth paying them a visit to support this show of faith and renewed confidence that clubland is definitely alive and kicking. Top class entertainment and

Sunday 17th sees a major coup for the club – we present Stellwerks, a top German rock covers band with huge club following in their home town of Berlin. They are only playing three gigs in the UK, so Starting in the next two weeks, don’t miss them! and over the coming months, In the coming months we have there are some great nights of Whizz Kid, Screaming Eagles, rock at Firth Park WMC. This Aftershock, Jagged Edge and Sunday 10th July sees Warrior, Mahogany Newt all lined up to a great West Yorkshire outfit appear, and if rock isn’t your thing who are building up a strong then you also have Storm, Back following locally with their 100% 2 Beat and Electro 80s amongst other acts coming along over the live classic rock covers.

competitively priced beer have always been an attraction and in these days of austerity clubland, once again, offers the opportunity for everyone to enjoy a good night out being entertained royally without breaking the bank. Make sure you get along to Askern Spa, advertised in our clubland section, and show your appreciation and support as this fine club invests in the community. summer months! Our Saturday night line ups are just as good – on 9th July Michael James is a great all-round entertainer with comedy and great songs, and on Saturday 16th we feature Still Crazy – a bunch of lads – should I say OLD lads (!) – who are always entertaining and have now added a good bit of comedy to their set. Look forward to seeing you! Craig Daniels

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

We’re in the full flows of the Sheffield Food Festival and just a reminder we’re giving you a chance to come along and sample some of the goodies FREE with Magic. I’ll be at the Wig and Pen by the Milestone’s ‘Pop-up’ restaurant on Fargate this week. Tune in to find out exactly what’s on offer and when or just check our website now at magicam.co.uk Staying on the theme of all things foodie, what are the most difficult packets and packages to open? You know what it’s like when you have those moments when you’d like to share the contents of a packet of crisps. I mentioned on the show that I’d finally managed to crack the problem of how to rip open the packet down the side so everyone can get at them. What’s more it comes off the back of finally being able to open sachets of sauce without spilling the contents or wrestling endlessly with the thing and merely getting a drop out. Lots of calls about your dilemmas from the horrendous packaging that surrounds some kids toys to David in Gleadless and his thoughts about the masses of polystyrene. Sometimes it feels as if we live in a world of polythene, plastic and other forms of packing. Rita told us about her trouble with Bovril cubes. When you’re in the middle of cooking it can be the most annoying thing in the world when you can’t get the thing open, or if it just crumbles away in the struggle. We also heard about the difficulty of rescuing cheese successfully from all corners of their triangle packets and the age old difficulty we’ve all faced with cardboard milk cartons. Asides from food though and even packaging matters, how do you free the end off a roll of Sellotape? One for another day!

PREVIEW by KT Evans IRON MAIDEN - ARENA

EP REVIEW by KT Evans THE CARTELS

If you’re into your metal music you’ll love this…if you’re into head banging beats you’ll love this…hell if you’re into kick-ass, explosive tunes that captivate audiences across the globe, then 24th July is your lucky night. Performing at Sheffield’s Motor Point Arena, Iron Maiden are all set to bring their notorious live show to the Steel city’s Rock fans. Formed in 1975 in East London, Iron Maiden are easily regarded as leading pioneers within the rock and metal genre. With an almighty thirty six studio albums under their belt and a 2000 plus record of live shows, the six piece have unarguably gained ‘rock legend’ status, not to mention worldwide success. A mantel pieces that no doubt is littered with plenty of awards over the years, 2009 saw Iron Maiden win the BBC Heavy Metal World cup, naming them as the best metal band of all time, along with a variety of highly sought after Classic Rock ‘n’ Roll Honour Awards. Brits and Grammy’s, Iron Maiden have collected them all, making the metal heads not only one of the most successful, but also celebrated bands of all time. The Final Frontier World Tour is a culmination of twenty six shows across the world, with ten UK city arena dates included. Having played in North and South America, Europe and Asia, Iron Maiden are certainly not doing things by halves, with founding member Steve explaining the reasoning behind the tours. ‘Everything in the Maiden camp has been so full on these last five years or so that we haven’t travelled around the UK to play for our home fans for almost that long…we thought we should get off our backsides and do the travelling this time and get round the country to see them all. We very much look forward to playing all four home countries…’ Having already taken to the stages of Moscow, Singapore and Australia, a place which they have never previously performed, Iron Maiden are masters of putting on a cracking live show, attracting a turnout of both die-hard fans aswell as young metal heads. With a first rate collection of new and old tracks, Iron Maiden are famed for their energetic stage presence, hey they’ve sure had enough practice, which is exactly why they have maintained a dedicated and supportive fan base throughout their career. For more info on how to purchase tickets for Iron Maiden on 24th July at Motor Point Arena, see the website on www. motorpointarena.co.uk or call the Arena Box Office on 0114 2565656

Since their formation onto Sheffield’s indie scene in early 2008, The Cartels have quickly made a name for themselves both in and around Yorkshire. Famed for their rock ‘n’ roll-esque melodies allowing an insight into the four-pieces influences, DT, Oliver, Ian and Darren are set to release their debut EP, Club 60 Sessions under Ditto Music, something which they believe will aid the projection of their sound to a wider audience. True Love Spreads, a guitar-fuelled, vintage indie number from Club 60 Sessions is part of The Cartels newly recorded, anticipated back catalogue. With sustained undertones and a distinct underground feel, this track has moments of Oasis with gritty vocals as supplied by front man Ian Schofield. Building up to an instrumental climax at the end of the track, True Love Spreads spells maturity with its controlled yet lively electric riffs throughout. Shake Rattle Roll, another new release from The Cartels debut EP follows much in the same vein. A certain country feel is portrayed within this track, which leans towards a more down-tempo beat as oppose to some of the bands more up-tempo, lively numbers. With no doubt that this track will be a cracker performed live, The Cartels clearly know what works together in order to successfully produce a very accomplished sounding track. Allowing both the bass and lead guitar’s melodies to be entwined throughout, Shake Rattle Roll is full of soul and atmosphere to create another top-notch number. As Sheffield’s premium festival Tramlines if just round the corner, The Cartels have secured a spot for themselves on the BBC Introducing stage at The Leadmill. One gig not to be missed, the four piece have a well-practiced stage performance, having played a variety of exciting shows throughout their time together. Supporting both Orange 38 and Detroit Social Club at local Sheffield venues, The Cartels also played at an exclusive Oasis after party in London last year, of which they were personally asked to play. Drawing their influences from the likes of Bob Dylan to Portishead, The Cartels come from varied musical backgrounds, however all share the same interest in producing soulful, rock infused tracks, as clearly evident through their Club 60 Sessions EP. For more info on The Cartels, visit the bands myspace page (www.myspace.com/ lovethecartels) or click to see their facebook page on facebook.com/thecartels for live gig listings and more info on their debut EP release

HIP HOP HOORAY Ladies and gentlemen, the boom bap is alive and well in Sheffield at Tramlines Festival this year. There’s a lot of talk about the lack of hip hop in old Sheffers since the dawn of the smoking ban, which relegated a lot of heads back to their bedroom haze, but Tramlines weekend should bring them out, bleary-eyed into venues across Sheffield. A host of local talent will be joined by some of the best mic-wielding talent in the country. DJs from Sheff crews such as Bad Taste Records, Thirsty Ear, The Tuesday Club, Ugly and more besides are

representing alongside a host of live talent. Highlights include UK legend Jehst, who’ll be showcasing his new album Dragon of an Ordinary Family at Bungalows and Bears on Tramlines Friday, joined by Micall Parknsun and Jazz T. Across the road on the same night, Kid Acne celebrates the launch of his hometown show at the Millenium Galleries ‘Kill Your Darlings’ with a fullfat lineup at The Great Gatsby. There’s a whole afternoon of beats and pieces in the beer gardens at Sheffield Students’ Union on Tramlines Saturday at the hip hop BBQ which features DJs from numerous Sheffield crews. The BBQ climaxes in live performances from The Ruby Kid, Renegade Brass Band and Ninja Tune/ Big Dada’s hot talent Dels, who’s collaborations with the likes of Joe Hot Chip and Roots Manuva have led to critical acclaim. As is always the case with Tramlines Festival, there’s constantly more and more being added to venues, including hefty bits at The West End, SAWA and more beside, so there’s sure to be a shed load on offer for the discerning beat junkies amongst you – keep checking this very website for the latest additions.

PETS CORNER

Finding the right kennel or cattery for your pet whilst you’re away requires a lot of forward planning. You must make sure that the one you choose is suitable. PDSA gives some helpful advice if you are considering kennels this holiday season. PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon Elaine Pendlebury said: “If you are going away this summer, it is essential that you get suitable accommodation arranged for your pet as soon as possible. Good quality kennels and catteries get booked up well in advance, so avoid any last minute hassle and get a pet booked in nice and early.” Close to home Try and find somewhere that is close to your home, as long journeys can often make pets anxious. It is always advisable to have a good look round where your pet could be staying and ask yourself questions such as: is it big enough; how many other pets are there; is there enough for your pet to do? And would you be happy leaving your pet there for a number of days? A good tip is to make the visit in normal working hours, as you will get more of a feel for what the conditions and atmosphere are like. A good kennel or cattery will welcome any new potential clients to have a look around; if they don’t, go elsewhere. What to look for Look for the same things as you would do if you were staying in a hotel. Check the building is well maintained and all areas are clean and tidy. The living and sleeping areas should be secure with no escape routes and have access to an exercise run and covered area. The walls of the pens and exercise areas should have solid barriers to minimise the spread of any germs from one pet guest to another. You should also check to ensure pets have clean water bowls, which are regularly topped up, and that there is a well stocked kennel kitchen with a diet chart for each pet. Home comforts You should ask the kennel owners if your cat or dog will be groomed, and if they can have their own baskets and bedding. This will make them feel more at home and help minimise the stress of being parted from you. You should also enquire about the exercise regime for dogs, and check if sleeping areas have temperature controls – younger and older pets may need heating in the winter or air conditioning in summer. Questions for you A good indication of kennel standards is what questions the staff ask you when you make a booking. They should require proof of up-to-date vaccinations and details such as your pet’s name, any special requirements, their likes and dislikes. They should also ask about any relevant medical history and the contact details of your vet and of a friend or relative who can authorise any decisions on your behalf while you are away. It may also be worthwhile leaving a letter with your representative, stating that you give them full authority for treatment in your absence. To find kennels and catteries in your area, visit www.yell.com. For more information on looking after your pet visit www.pdsa.org.uk.

Angler’s Corner by Clint Walker

After last week’s fun and games at the Carp Society’s Horseshoe Lake, it’s back to reality this week.... I thought I’d have a look at a couple of the newest bait releases from some of the big name companies, in particular Japanese giant Marukyu and Devon based Pallatrax. I’m fortunate enough to be able to speak to Marukyu’s UK Development Director Roy Marlow fairly regularly, and he takes time out to tell me what’s new from the company stable. Their big release recently has been the all new Jelly Pellet known on JPz. Marukyu scientists have over 600 ingredients which can be added to their baits to ensure they are at the forefront of bait technology; JPz is no different. Designed to work year round in all water temperatures, the jellified pellets can be banded, hair rigged or hooked without splitting and because they are soft, will not impede the hook on the strike. The baits recipe means it will release key feeding attractants and triggers which makes it incredibly effective. This relies on elements of polysaccharide science, but the exact details must remain secret. JPZ are made from quality foodstuffs, free from manufactured chemicals and anything else which may harm the aquatic environment. Marukyu testing has gone exceptionally well, with users reporting that devastating results have been had on waters which have seen nothing similar before! For more information on JPz and a host of other Marukyu products, visit www.marukyu.co.uk. Also new this week is the release of Pallatrax ‘CatChunx’ for the catfish angler. I’m an avid user of Simon Pomeroy’s products, I’ve had some brilliant results on baits such as Jungle and Multi-worm so I expect these to be no different. CatChunx have been developed after listening to catfish anglers and fishery owners to produce specialist 25mm pre-oiled pellets in two different flavours. Stinky Marine which is an orange coloured bait heavily laced with mackerel flavours and then coated in similar oils, and Bloodworm which, as you may guess, is a bloodworm flavoured alternative. Pallatrax are also producing purpose made catfish rigs which enable the newcomer to catfishing to be sure that their baits are presented effectively. All of the Pallatrax bait range contains the very best in naturally sourced additives, flavours and ingredients, and the company mission statement resolves to give anglers the closet possible offerings to the fish’s natural diet. The new ‘Naturals’ liquid additives are another great edge to help you catch more fish; earthworm, bloodworm, krill and shrimp are supplied (and they really stink!) in handy bottles which can be added to groundbaits, used as a hook bait dip or in any other way you can think of to put fish on the trail of the hook bait. If it’s a truly ‘natural’ approach you fancy, then matching the new baits with the innovative Pallatrax Stonze weights means that whatever is presented on the lake or river bed is more or less completely naturally occurring and certainly completely ‘lead free’. Add the ‘Hook’ from the same company and you will probably never miss another bite or lose another fish ever again! Find out more about Pallatrax at www. pallatrax.co.uk

303 PRINCE OF WALES ROAD, SHEFFIELD, S2 1FH Open Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri & Sat 7.30am - 4pm. Open Wed 7.30am - 1pm.

It looks like being another weekend of exciting TV action from three top venues on Saturday when the principal race is the Group 1 Darley July Cup over six furlongs from Newmarket. There are then two Group 2 races (one each from Ascot and Newmarket), two Listed races and a sprinkling of top handicaps. All in all it looks like another highly competitive weekend of racing. When checking out the records of the protagonists I was amazed at how many had actually run a lifetime best speed rating last time out, or had come within a whisker of doing so. This can only mean that a high percentage of the runners this weekend are at the peak of their powers or are close to being so. This in turn promises ding-dong action all round.

2.05 York, City Wall Stakes, 5 furlongs, Listed, Class 1: Borderlescott heads my ratings but I have gone cold on him because of what I thought were some below-par performances this year. Lightly-weighted Albany Rose is on a roll and won by 5 lengths last time out while Liberty Lady is similarly lightly weighted and looks dangerous but the one I like best is Dandy Nicholls’ Tax Free. This one won last time out, has winning course form and has a Group 2 win in his CV – credentials that should make him hard to beat. Top weight Noble Storm also won last time out and looks to be improving this year. Other recent scorers that may run well in what looks a tricky race are Captain Dunne, Show Rainbow and Admirable Duchess.

Racing Form

2.20 Newmarket, 32Red.com Superlative Stakes, 2yo 7 furlongs, Group 2: This looks like being a really informative race as many different form lines should provide valuable clues to the merit of the different races contested so far. Joint top of my ratings and a winner on his only start is Godolphin’s Citizen’s Charter who gets the nod here. It is not by a lot however as the form of his race was let down by Electric Qatar last week (I am hoping that that was because his second race came too quickly). My other joint top is Richard Hannon’s Fort Bastion who has yet to win a race but has looked decidedly useful in his two outings to date. Close behind come a trio of others with good ratings: Roman Soldier (5 points adrift of the top two), Coup de Ville (6 points adrift and a winner over course and distance), and Elkhart (10 points adrift). The latter two both won last time out. Finally another last time out winner from a stable that is going really well is Keith Dalgleish’s Sound Advice who is 15 points adrift of the top rated but who, for some reason I can’t really explain, I fancy to give the selection most to do. 2.40 York, John Smiths Silver Cup, 14 furlongs, Listed: It was hard not to be impressed by Tominator’s decisive win in the Northumberland Plate a couple of weeks ago, when held up off the strong pace set by Overturn. That race was run in a scorching time for the going and he gets a relatively confident vote to follow up over this shorter distance under the same jockey as last time. There are plenty of dangers but providing decent luck in running and use of the same tactics he can come through the field again through to score. 2.55 Newmarket, 32Red Bunbury Cup, 7 furlongs, class 2 handicap for 3yo+: Several of the contestants here have performed admirably recently. From an extremely long short list I have selected Brian Meehan’s Manassas to follow up his Royal Ascot victory in the Buckingham Palace stakes. Other recent scorers Space Station and Imperial Djay can chase him home. Others with fairly obvious claims in a competitive event are Masked Dance, Dance and Dance and Docofthebay ( the latter two are running better than ever this year). 3.15 York, John Smiths Cup, a Heritage Handicap over 10+ furlongs: The selection is the classy top weight Distant Memories, who won last time out and can give the weight away all-round. Another recent winner Pleasant Day can chase him home with the other dangers: Merchant of Dubai; Ramona Chase; Demolition; and Moyenne Corniche following in their wake.

THE CONIFERS GUEST HOUSE

3.35 Newmarket, Darley July Cup, 6 furlongs, Group 1: The admirably consistent Genki did us a favour a couple of weeks ago and I fancy his chances to step up a notch and win his first Group 1 prize here. Roger Charlton’s inmate seems an uncomplicated and consistent horse that usually runs to form and that is a plus in itself. However, I was impressed with Libranno recently and to my mind he presents the biggest danger to the selection in receipt of the 3yo allowance although Delegator was also quite impressive when going in at York on his return to action.

Contact Jackie Smith 01733 203256

3.45 Ascot, Totesport Summer Mile, Group 2: I like the chances of several here. Top rated in my system is Godolphin’s Emerald Commander and it is a toss-up between him and the John Gosden inmate Nationalism. After quite a bit of debate with myself I have selected Nationalism because he won last time out in a good time. Also well rated in my system is the frustrating Beacon Lodge (who I have run out of patience with), Red Jazz and Dick Turpin. The ground may be too fast for the last two named individuals. Side Glance also won well last time and another with a good recent performance under his belt is Fanunalter.

3.55 York, John Smiths Racing Stakes, 0-95 Handicap, 8 furlongs: Another highly competitive event can go to Moheebb who goes well here and won last time out. Collateral Damage is a talented but frustrating animal but may give the selection most to do. Others with good shouts in a very difficult race are: Kiwi Bay; Charlie Cool; Ordnance Row; Divine Call; Arabian Spirit; Amethyst Dawn; Tevez; Miami Gator; and My Freedom.

DAD PLEASE WITH DANNYʼS MOVE BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

Tony Philliskirk is hoping his son can kick-start his career at Bramall Lane... like he did in the 80s. Danny Philliskirk, 20, signed a one-year contract with the Blades last week following his release from Chelsea. Philliskirk senior believes United is the perfect Club for Danny and dad admits he played his part in making sure his son arrived at his current destination, after a loan stint last term. “I am very pleased for Danny and the move is very ironic,” said Tony, who played 95 times for the Blades in the 1980s. “Sheffield United was my first professional Club and he is staying about half a mile away from where I stayed as a youngster. “When the opportunity came along I was very optimistic for him. I told him what a fantastic Club this is but obviously he must keep developing and work hard ready for the start of the season.” After moving to Chelsea from Oldham in his teens, Philliskirk junior has been starved of first team opportunities but Tony says the experience in London should benefit his son: “He left home when he was 15 and had to grow up so quickly. He is 20 now and has become very independent, so he is his own man. When this opportunity first came up he phoned and all I could tell him was the positives of the Club and the city. “Regardless of the division they are in at the moment in time, it remains a passionate Club with excellent supporters and it is a great chance for him to kickstart his career after the education he received at Chelsea. “His first-team chances at Stamford Bridge were obviously limited but we hope this is a step back before he moves forward. “He scored a few goals for the reserves last season but we are under no illusions that he is still a young man, who is a late developer like I was. Hopefully he can help United and I am sure the Club will help him.”

OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Sheffield Wednesday have signed defender Julian Bennett on a two-year deal. The 26-year-old full back was out of contract at Nottingham Forest and becomes the Owls’ third summer signing alongside Rob Jones and David Prutton. Bennett joined the Forest academy as a 14-year old, before crossing the Midlands to sign for Walsall, where he made 56 appearances for the Saddlers. In January 2006, the defender returned to the City Ground, under then Forest boss Gary Megson, and went on to make 106 appearances for the Reds. Bennett played a vital role in helping Forest to promotion from League 1 in 2007-08, scooping the club’s Player of the Year award along the way. He said: “It’s fantastic to be here and I am looking forward to the challenge. “When a club like Sheffield Wednesday shows interest in you, it doesn’t take too much thinking about. “I’m a hard working player who gives 100 per cent every game and I’m ready to get stuck into my football at Sheffield Wednesday.”

NEW DEALS FOR TRIO OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Sheffield Wednesday academy products Cecil Nyoni, Sean Cuff and Vadaine Oliver have all agreed new deals at Hillsborough. Both Nyoni and Cuff will enter their first year as a professional with the Owls, having impressed throughout their time in the SWFC academy. Defender Nyoni has signed a two-year contract while goalkeeper Sean Cuff has put pen to paper on a one-year deal. Meanwhile striker Oliver has extended his stay at Hillsborough by a further year.

ROVER NEWS www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk

Doncaster Rovers can today confirm the arrival of 18 year old James Baxendale on an initial oneyear contract. The Doncaster born youngster put pen to paper on his first ever professional contract after coming through the ranks at Yorkshire neighbours Leeds United. The attacking midfielder who used to watch Rovers when not playing for Leeds said he had always been an admirer of Sean O’Driscoll’s sides: “I like the style of play and the brand of football that the fans get to watch here at the Keepmoat. When I knew the boss was interested, he didn’t really have to sell the football club to me.” Due to the large squad built by Leeds boss Simon Grayson, opportunities of first team football were hard to come by at Elland Road for Baxendale, but he insists, should the chance present itself, he’s aiming to please the fans: “I would say I’m like a young Joe Cole - not the fastest, but able to beat a man with a trick. Flair is definitely part of my game and I’m looking forward to developing that under Sean O’Driscoll and the coaches here. Pre-season can’t come soon enough!” James will wear the number 25 shirt during his time at the Keepmoat Stadium.

BROWN JOINS MILLERS MILLERS NEWS www.themillers.co.uk

Rotherham United have completed the signing of Troy Brown from Ipswich Town. The 20-year-old joins the Millers on a two-year deal after rejecting an offer of an extended deal with the Championship outfit. The versatile defender, who played 12 games in the Championship for The Tractor Boys last season, can operate at either centre half or right back. “Troy is another young lad we have managed to sign,” said manager Andy Scott. “I have known him since his days at Fulham. He has good pace and good passing ability and he has played a few games for Ipswich. He now wants to establish himself as a first team player and he is hungry to do well. I have known his agent for a long time and between us we convinced him that it was the correct place to come to.” Brown has international honours to his name after representing Wales at under 17, 19 and 21 level. He started his career with Fulham before joining Ipswich Town in 2009. He made his professional debut in 2010 for Town against Sheffield United. During the 2010/2011 he made 12 league and four cup appearances for the Tractor Boys.

GOLF TOURS

ICE HOCKEY By Sarah Youle

Sheffield Steelers owner, Paul Ragan, has handed over the day-to-day running of the club, just six months after purchasing the troubled team from Bob Phillips. Ragan will keep a 50% share in the club, but will only be focussing his attention on his other team in the Elite League, the Cardiff Devils. The Steelers will be run by Commercial Director, Tony Smith, who has confirmed in the local media that Cardiff and Sheffield will have different player budgets this season, a change from Ragan’s ownership when it was believed that both teams would be held to the same budget. Steelers fans were disappointed to hear that Joey Talbot is retiring from hockey to take up his place “in the real world”, with job in the mining industry back in Canada. “I loved Sheffield, I had a great time and met many great people both in the room and in the City. You wouldn’t keep coming back to the same place if you didn’t like it and weren’t happy there. It would have been fun to do another year with Finner but the time to retire was right for me “I have lots of great memories. Winning the first play off was huge but perhaps the best one for me was winning the league the year after. I enjoyed Europe, I enjoyed winning in Europe and showing those teams that we were a good side from a good league “I have nothing but good memories from being a Steeler and thank everyone who I met in my time over there. I wish the Steelers well, I wish Finner well and of course I wish the guys well. I will miss them and playing but I’ve had my time, now it’s time for others to play in that shirt and time for me to move on.”

SPEEDWAY Sheffield Tigers

FANS attending Sheffield’s exciting Premier League clash with Edinburgh at Owlerton on Thursday are in for an added treat. Tigers bosses are set to welcome the vintage speedway bikes and their riders for a series of ‘Blast from the Past’ races after the main meeting. The project has been pulled together by Nigel Hinchliffe, who is ironically the club’s youth development co-ordinator – but this Thursday he has gone to the other end of the age scale! He said: “They will be displaying their vintage speedway bikes just inside the turnstiles prior to the start of the meeting, and will then be taking us back in time with three demonstration races in the second half, with six riders in each race. “Anyone who has not witnessed these fantastic machines in action before is in for a real treat and the amazing sound from their straight-through pipes is not to be missed.” The riders taking part are in the Northern Riders Championship are: Alan Palmer (Sheffield) riding a Rotrax Mk1 JAP. Keith Gardiner (Belle Vue) riding an Erskine JAP. Ron Jones (Fleetwood) riding a Mk1 Rotrax JAP. Graham Tattersall (Nelson) riding a JAP in a JAWA frame. Steve Cook (Crewe) riding a Mk1 Rotrax JAP. Alec Gooch (Odsal) riding a Mattinglay JAP. More information and photos can be seen on their website at www.vintagespeedway.co.uk
