SHEFFIELD CELEBRATES RECORD NUMBER OF GREEN FLAGS Sheffield enhanced its reputation as the country’s greenest city as it scooped a record number of awards for its parks and green spaces. The city picked up four new Green Flag Awards this year at Charnock Recreation Ground, Manor Fields, Millhouses Park and Wyming Brook. Sheffield is now the leading authority in the Yorkshire and Humberside region with 22 Green Flag Awards - the national standard for quality parks and green spaces. Councillor Leigh Bramall, the Council’s Cabinet member for Environment and Transport said: “This is fantastic news for Sheffield.
These four new national awards reinforce Sheffield’s position as one of the UK’s greenest cities. They follow on from the city’s 18 sites that have already received Green Flag status. “The awards also showcase the city’s huge variety of top quality green spaces ranging from stunning outer city sites - in this case Wyming Brook, our beautiful city parks Millhouses and of course our urban spaces at the heart of communities - both Manor Fields and Charnock Recreation Ground. “All these sites are worthy winners of the Green Flag award and I would like to congratulate all
those involved, including volunteers, Friends Groups, our partners Green Estate and Sheffield Wildlife Trust and of course Council staff. The success has been built on great team work and I hope that Sheffielders will now visit these sites - and Sheffield’s Great Outdoors more than ever!” John Brighton, Chair of the Friends of Millhouses Park added: “We are delighted to have gained this prestigious Green Flag award. Many people have been involved in making significant improvements to the park over the last few years to make it a better place for everyone. The highly successful partnership
working with Sheffield City Council has been a major part of this success.” Twelve sites retained the coveted Green Flag status again this year: Cholera Monument Grounds and Clay Wood, Ecclesall Woods, Firth Heritage Park, Norfolk Heritage Park, Peace Gardens, Botanical Gardens, Weston Park, Winter Garden, Devonshire Green, Tinsley Green, Wheata Woods and Meersbrook Park, and they have been joined by Millhouses Park, Wyming Brook and Fretson Green, which improved from Green Pennant (now Community Green Flag) status last year. Tracey Wilson of the Charnock Friends Group said: “The Recreation Ground is really well used by the local community and everyone has put a lot of effort into achieving this award, including the local school pupils, who have shown so much enthusiasm to improve the green space at the heart of our community.” Manor Fields was part of a large hunting estate back in the 15th century and
in the 19th century was known for its Deep Pit mine. Sue France, Chief Executive of Green Estate commented: “Fretson Green is a small pocket park in the heart of the Manor Estate. Owned by Manor and Castle Development Trust, it was the first major greenspace project in the area’s regeneration back in 2001 and was pivotal in changing standards of design, management and maintenance in the area. If anyone would like to join a local Friends Group or set up a new one for their local green space they should contact the Parks and Countryside Service on 0114 250 0500.

Joe’s wife bought a new line of expensive cosmetics guaranteed to make her look years younger. After a lengthy sitting before the mirror applying the “miracle” products, she asked, “Darling, honestly, what age would you say I am?” Looking over her carefully, Joe replied, “Judging from your skin, twenty; your hair, eighteen; and your figure, twenty five.” “Oh, you flatterer!” she gushed. “Hey, wait a minute!” Joe interrupted. “I haven’t added them up yet.” One day a housework-challenged husband decided to wash his own sweatshirt. Seconds after he stepped into the laundry room, he shouted to his wife, “What setting do I use on the washing machine?” “It depends,” she replied. “What does it say on your sweatshirt?” He yelled back, “Nike.” A man wanted a boat more than anything. His wife kept saying that they could not afford one, but he bought one anyway. “I’ll tell you what,” he told her. “In the spirit of compromise, why don’t you name the boat?” Being a good sport, she accepted. When the man went to the dock for the maiden voyage, this is the name he saw painted on the side: “For Sale.” A man put his car in reverse and accidentally drove it into a wall. He took it to his mechanic, who replaced the dented bumper. A few days later, he actually did it again. “I’m so embarrassed,” he moaned to his wife while he reached for the phone. “Why not tell him it was me this time?” his wife suggested. “I could,” he said while dialing, “but that’s what I told him last time.”

The fastest growing games market is on the mobile platform, and, if you fancy doing something exciting with your little chap, and don’t want to splash out on a Prince Albert*, here’s the best of the bunch. Quiz Climber (Mobile / iPad). Quiz Climber sees you answering popular questions while climbing a tree and beating the other birds to the high scores. Yep, it sounds bizarre, but it’s compelling playing and the online high score system is something to beat. Play enough and you get a “continue” when you get a question wrong, allowing you a fresh chance to claw your way out of Stupidsville and into Brainytown! Quiz Climber is a simple concept, but once you’re on the road to scores of 30+ it’s hard to put down. Definitely the game of the month (it’s a slow month, OK)? Score: 9/10. The graphics and the concepts are pointless but the game is so compelling that no one cares. A bargain for 69p. Blobster (Mobile / iPod). Blobster is an Angry Birds type game where your mission is to guide an amorphous blob around a maze of pillars and levels while collecting stars and completing challenges. It looks great, it’s very playable, but it made me so motion sick I had to stop after about a twenty minutes. Like a sailor who’s been voted barrel boy for the third hour in a row, I just didn’t have the stomach to handle any more. Score: Pass (the sick bucket)/10. It’s a great game in theory and if you love your Angry Birds then you’ll love this; you just need a stronger stomach than I have. D.A.R.K. (Mobile / iPad). Expect plenty of action in this futuristic role playing game that puts you in control of a soldier sent to investigate the USS Storm Bringer. There aren’t many RPGs on the mobile format and this is a welcome addition - it’s just a shame it feels unfinished. By far the worst thing about games of this kind is the lack of dedicated control system, and using the touch pad for movement is a poor substitute as the controls are unwieldy and the shooting system limited. It’s atmospheric enough and while very short, is good fun if you can stand the bugs and annoying issues which plague the release. Score: 6/10. So much potential let down by a sluggish movement and combat system, which in a game of this kind, are the meat and drink of the game play. That said, you really can’t go wrong for 69p. More fun next week!

BATMAN LIVE
Two and a half years in the making, the spectacular production was unveiled by Warner Bros. Consumer Products, DC Entertainment and Nick Grace of Water Lane Productions Ltd at a World Premier last week, July 19th at Manchester’s MEN Arena. Batman Live comes to the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield for 8 performances from 10th until 14th August. Audiences entering the arena are greeted by a 3D Gotham City landscape, complete with buildings, soundscape and video animation, setting the scene for the story to come. The sheer magnitude of the production becomes apparent from the first moment the full symphonic score is heard, and the 100-foot bat-shaped LED video wall comes to life to enhance the action on the impressive custom-built stage. The 43-strong cast of actors and circus-trained acrobats have been rehearsing to perfect the stateof-the-art production – and as the lights dim and Gotham City’s afternoon turns into night – you can almost feel the anticipation in the air. Faithfully adapted from the DC Comics characters and stories, BATMAN LIVE focuses on Robin’s quest for justice, which leads him to follow in the footsteps of his hero – the mysterious vigilante known as Batman, much to the dismay of his protective guardian, billionaire Bruce Wayne, whom the audience knows is secretly Batman. A dazzling celebration of storytelling and stagecraft, BATMAN LIVE is, at its heart, a poignant comingof-age story. Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson, both orphaned at an early age, must first learn to overcome their own fears and forge their own family – with the help of Police Commissioner James Gordon and Bruce’s trusted butler, Alfred Pennyworth – if they’re going to survive the combined forces of Batman’s larger-than-life rogues’ gallery: The Joker, The Penguin, Catwoman, The Riddler, Two-Face, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. Tickets for the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield shows, from 10th until 14th August, are priced £20, £30 & £35, with a limited number of premium Gotham City seats available at £45 (all tickets may be subject booking fee), available online at www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk, by phone on 0114 256 56 56 or person at the Arena box office.

We are now just weeks away from switchover when tens of thousands of viewers will receive Freeview for the first time. The Sheffield and Chesterfield transmitters will switch on the 10 and 24 August. Emley Moor, used by some parts of Sheffield makes the change on the 7 and 21 September. You can check when your change over date is at www.digitaluk.co.uk/postcodechecker What happens at switchover? Switchover is a two stage process. At stage one, analogue BBC Two is switched off. BBC Freeview channels are then boosted in power and are available from local relay transmitters for the first time. A fortnight later at stage two, all other analogue services are switched off and the remaining Freeview channels increase in power and become available from relay transmitters. Viewers with digital TVs or Freeview, Top Up TV or BT Vision boxes will need to retune their equipment at both stages of switchover. Guidance on retuning is available from our website www.digitaluk.co.uk/retuning and the advice line on 08456 50 50 50. All your questions Recent switchovers have shown that most viewers find the experience straightforward. But we are aware that some people may have questions or need extra assistance. Viewers can receive face-to-face help at one of several road shows and advice points which are being held over the next few weeks in our area See for further information: www.digitaluk.co.uk/ yorkshireevents Ecclesfield – 3 August at Morrison’s, The Common, S35 9WJ from 9am-5pm Staveley – 8 August Staveley Market Place, High Street Town Centre S43 3UR from 9am5pm Sheffield – 10-11 August outside John Lewis, Barkers Pool, Town Centre, S1 2HB from 9am-5pm Sheffield – 10-11 August stall 123, Castle Market, Exchange Street, S1 2AH Rotherham – 13 August junction of College Street & Effingham Street, S65 1AG from 9am-5pm Chesterfield 24-25 August at Chesterfield Market, New Square Arena, High Street, S40 1PH from 9am-5pm Sheffield – 24-25 August outside John Lewis, Barkers Pool, Town Centre, S1 2HB from 9am-5pm Sheffield – 24-25 August stall 123, Castle Market, Exchange Street, S1 2AH Rotherham – 7-8 September outside Boots, Howard Street, Town Centre, S65 1JQ from 9am-5pm Rotherham – 21-22 September outside Boots, Howard Street, Town Centre, S65 1JQ from 9am-5pm

What Housing Advice Do You Want? The Affordable Housing Team in Sheffield City Council is carrying out a piece of work to review the provision of advice on, and access to housing options in the city. The aim of this work is to identify where there are any gaps in the current provision, and think about how it might be improved and more effectively delivered. Their work so far has indcated that gaps do exist in the Council’s provision of housing advice, and they are seeking to establish whether there would be a demand for a “one stop shop” for housing advice - a place (whether it be a physical place or a website etc) where information and advice on all types of housing options in the city is readily available. Consultation excercises have been carried out with a range of services within the council and with various external organisations, such as registered housing providers and major local employers. They are now asking you, as members of the public and residents of Sheffield, for your thoughts. SCC would be grateful if you could spend a few minutes answering the questionnaire available at http://surveys.lasos.org.uk/TakeSurvey. aspx?SurveyID=278 affordablehousing@sheffield.gov.uk
Sheffield Care Trust Consultations There are two consultaltions taking place between now and 26 and 31 August about changes to some mental health services (this includes things like dementia/altzheimers’). The consultation documents can be found at http://www.sct.nhs.uk/about-us/ consultations. Some of the proposed changes will be to services for older people – please do look and comment about the proposals.

He our own chosen tipple too often stressed the importance of clubs and these days, with money being being sociable places with all the tight, just stick to bog-standard warmth and companionship of lager. Some early club men also wanted their new leisure spaces to remain alcohol-free but they were in the minority. Most working men were thirsty after a long, hard day down the mine, in the factory, or tilling the land. Beer was cheap and refreshing. It helped them to relax and forget their woes. They soon had their own way with each club being allowed to decide for themselves on this issue. The ‘battle for beer’ had been won. Next week we shall look at the factors in the 20th century that affected our drinking habits.
UP CHARITY BREAKING IS HARD TO DO VICTORY
VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE
The Bluebell Wood Appeal has received a healthy donation from one of the region’s clubs as Darnall Victory raised £1600 for the charity. The money was raised at a fundraising charity night held on the 9th of July at the club from raffles, donations, games and takings from behind the bar. Pictured below is Pauline, Jean, Paul and Graham from the club with a local representative from Bluebell Wood.

MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas But the chances are that it’s happened to us at some point! Years later you might be able to look back with a smile thinking about why you chucked someone or got given the elbow, so the other day I opened the lines on the Breakfast Show for you to tell me your stories about finishing with a an ex partner whatever the funny reason may have been. Responses ranged from “I didn’t like the mates he knocked about with” to, “She had bad breath”. Humm. I wonder if they ever sorted it out, or may be just found a compatible partner with a similar condition!! The tales that stood out for me were firstly the one about the boyfriend who came to stay for a weekend and ended up trying to steal a smooch with Mum. He got the heave ho before breakfast could be served the next day. Anna also told us about her Star Trek obsessed boyfriend who never missed an episode. On top of going to every convention possible, the final straw came when he started wearing Mr Spock fake ears. Now I wonder if he found his Lieutenant Uhura in the end? More fun and games every morning on the Breakfast Show, and don’t forget that we’re giving you a chance to treat the whole family to a free day out at one of the oldest and best loved shows all this week. The Bakewell Show is on Wednesday and Thursday, August 3rd and 4th and we’re playing the ‘Sheepish Showdown’ every morning on Magic. Join us for a chance to win and the best of the 60s, 70s and more.

LIVE REVIEW by KT Evans METALLICA@SONISPHERE
LIVE REVIEW by KT Evans BLACK SPIDERS
True front runners within the heavy metal music scene, Metallica proved exactly why they will still remain champion thoroughbreds within the rock ‘n’ roll hall of fame, at the recent Sonisphere festival. One quarter of the fondly titled ‘Big 4,’ comprising of Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica, the four piece not only put on arguably one of the best live gigs at the festival, but also suitably ensured it would not be forgotten. Rallying the festival attendees on the first Friday of the metal head’s pinnacle of summer, Metallica were the last to play on the Apollo Stage at around 10pm, which has historically seen the likes of Iron Maiden and Motorhead perform. However, Metallica were truly there to stamp their own personal mark and from the word (or scream) ‘go,’ perfectly portrayed themselves as misters of pure rock. With almost all of the extended venue capacity from sixty to eighty thousand gathered to see a piece of true rock history, eruptions of ‘Metallica’ chants fuelled the atmospheric nature…everyone clearly knew this was going to be a certified gig to remember. Comprising their set from track off all nine of their heavily popular studio albums, it wasn’t just the most dedicated fans at the front…hell they were everywhere! Metallica t-shirts and hoodies were ten-a-penny, indicating even though the group have been producing music since their formation in 1981, they obviously still have the right components to win over fans new and old. Throughout their one hour long set, major highlights came with the fierce explosion of fire work displays (who says we have to stick to 5th November?) along with the projection of huge balls of fire above the crowds. Evidently not doing things by halves, these however were only secondary to Metallica’s first rate performance. Lead vocalist James Hetfield still harbours that special something he always did whilst on stage and a clear chemistry between the long standing members Lars, Kirk and Robert is more than apparent. This could easily explain why it is so hard to take your eyes off the band whilst they perform so energetically on stage. Although wind from the open air did have a somewhat negative effect towards the bands overall sound, Metallica unarguably ensured the audience were on fire with their scorching hot live set. Classic numbers such as ‘No Leaf Clover’ and ‘Seek and Destroy’ gave the performance an overall vintage rock feel, with ‘Master of Puppets’ indicating lead guitarist Kirk Hammett can still play the hell out of his trademark instrument. A cracking way to end day one of a cracking weekend…
For a band to be given the honour of headlining a stage at a hugely influential festival is a pretty big deal. Not only this, the band in question, Black Spiders also call Sheffield their hometown, which in turn results in the honour also rubbing on onto the local area aswell. Blasting their way onto the Jaegermeister stage on Saturday 9th at Sonisphere, Knebworth, Black Spiders proved to all who witnessed that heavy metal is one of the most exciting genres around, doing it not only for themselves, but for all the other metal bands out there aswell…and my God they smashed it! A clash between Biffy Clyro on the main Apollo Stage and Black Spiders on Jaeger which occurred at the same time on the bill could have harboured something potentially hazardous for the Sheffield five-piece. However, this certainly wasn’t the case, with chants of ‘f**k Biffy’ erupting from the marauds of Spider fans, who had decidedly chosen to support ‘the best underground band’ as awarded by Metal Hammer Gods in 2010. No offence to you Biffy, no contest was even struck up between the two clashes, with the atmosphere above and beyond at 10:15, minutes before Peter, Ozzy, Mark, Si and Adam were set to perform. Throwing themselves onto the stage, similar to that of the standard mosh-pitting that was already kicking off, it would be an understatement to say that Black Spiders gave it their all…hell in front of our eyes they morphed into Rock Gods with their ‘power stances’ and killer energy to throw any pop group (biffy who?) out the water. With tracks from their 2011 new album ‘Sons of the North,’ Black Spiders cranked up the decibels with high voltage heavy metal (minus the screams) which in turn fuelled an adrenaline riled set throughout. A trademark for the group being their ability to set the mood in every way possible, a highlight of the night came with the performance of ‘St Peter,’ an anthemic, classic rock number with moments of deep underground metal. Other tracks, ‘What’s good a rock without a roll?’ and ‘Medusa’s Eyes’ also followed; explosive and full on metal madness, the tempo successfully failed to the waiver from start to finish. Dedicating one of the latter songs to ‘the woman I love,’ lead singer Pete Spiby thrust us into ‘Just like a woman,’ sparking chants of ‘f**k you Black Spiders,’ something we can only image as a contradictory mark of respect for the band? Worked for them anyway, with the group clearly taking advantage of the support and rightly so, lapping up every minute. Although an encore would have totally completed the bands set, Black Spiders are clearly connoisseurs of what they do and quite clearly love it. Their anthemic rock speaks for itself…our only question is, why are they not bigger than they already are?
the Neutral room to make way for the monster booking of J Majik and Wickerman as well as Sheffields Checan, DMK and Muskman. J Majik & Wickaman are well established within the heavyweight elite of the drum & bass scene as producers and DJs in their own right. 2008 saw J Majik & Wickaman grace the UK’s official top 40 chart with their critically acclaimed dancefloor anthem ‘Crazy World’, which sold over 20,000 copies and reached BBC Radio One’s B list after previously achieving two record of the week’s from Scott Mills and Greg James. In 2009, after a lengthy tour of America they were straight back in the studio and turned a classic electro house record from The Egg ‘Walking Away’ into a contender for best Drum & Bass remix of the year after massive specialist support from Pete Tong, Annie Mac and Galaxy FM’s Andi Durrant. Since then their track ‘Feel About You’ smashed radio and clubs alike, they produced a huge remixes of Deadmau5 ‘I Remember’ and in December last year their stunning remix of trance trio Above & Beyond’s ‘On A Good Day’ went to #1 in the drum and bass download chart. There’s no stopping this dynamic duo; their single ‘In Pieces’ ft. Dee Freer is coming on 29th May 2011 on Ministry of Sound Recordings, they’ve just produced a remix of all-time classic ‘Let Me Be Your Fantasy’ and will have an album dropping later

PETS CORNER PICK IT UP AND POOP SCOOP!
Next week is Dogs Trust’s National Poop Scoop Week (25 to 31 July) which encourages all dog owners to pick up after their pets. Litter, rubbish and dog mess are unfortunately common sites in parks and woodland areas, but the week aims to raise peoples’ awareness and get dog owners to help keep the country clean. PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Elaine Pendlebury said: “Make sure that you are always prepared and carry a poop scoop or bag when you go out on your daily dog walks. Dogs in the UK produce around a total of 1,000 tonnes of faeces a day and dog mess left lying around poses a real threat to human health. It can spread nasty infections and other serious illnesses, largely as a result of people not worming their pets.” Each ‘dog dump’ has the potential of containing around 1 million of roundworm eggs and if these get into your system, the larvae can migrate through your body. Fortunately, this usually has no effect, but in serious cases it can cause blindness. Roundworm eggs are very resistant – they can last in soil for nearly two years, so dog owners have a big responsibility to worm their dog and clean up any mess. Have a look at the downloadable leaflet about worms at www.pdsa.org.uk/leaflets So next time you are out, remember to keep Britain clean and safe and poop scoop after your dog! For more information on PDSA please visit www.pdsa.org.uk.
GO FOR GOLD WITH PDSA Groups and individuals can take part in the Gold Challenge to raise funds for PDSA Sports fans are being urged to get into the Olympic spirit over the next 12 months and take part in their own “mini-games” while raising funds for sick and injured pets. Leading veterinary charity PDSA is on the hunt for individuals and groups to take part in the Gold Challenge, a unique fundraising challenge where participants choose between five and 30 Olympic and Paralympic sports to take part in. Brenda Smith, PDSA Fundraising Manager, says “If you’ve ever watched the Olympics on TV and wanted to have a go, now’s your chance! Gold Challenge is a great opportunity to take part in activities you’ve always wanted to try, or even improve your skills at a current sport.” Details of local clubs are available to all participants, making it even easier to take part in the Gold Challenge. “There are 30 Olympic and Paralympic sports to choose from, so people of all ages and abilities can take part,” continues Brenda. “Just select the ones you want to try, book a place and start fundraising! It really is that simple.” PDSA provides over two million free veterinary treatments to sick and injured pets of people in need every year. Funds raised by Gold Challenge will help the charity meet its annual cost of over £50million to provide this service. Brenda adds: “The Gold Challenge is about getting fit, getting involved in the London 2012 Olympic spirit and raising funds for PDSA all at the same time. Plus you’ll have the motivation of helping our fantastic charity to keep you on track!” PDSA is one of 100 charities taking part in the Gold Challenge. For further information visit www.pdsa.org.uk/ goldchallenge or call 01952 204791.

Angler’s Corner by Clint Walker
This week, if I’m truthful, I’ve come in for a bit of criticism. I appreciate that as a writer, my opinions may not be agreed with by all readers (I wouldn’t by much of a writer if I didn’t generate opinion?) but it’s something I’ve noticed creeping (indeed marching) in with the advent of internet forums..... As many readers will know, I’m supported by Devon based bait and tackle company Pallatrax, and as such, it’s within my role to promote the company and its wares; I know that being ‘force fed’ product placement is not something I enjoy having foisted upon me, but it goes with the territory within the angling media, and I accept that other anglers have the same task set by their respective backers. HOWEVER; I would not dream of dishing out the kind of abuse (and it is abuse) that I see every day on a variety of forums to which I and others subscribe or contribute. It pains me as an angler who endeavours to support or assist other people to enjoy their fishing and offer exposure to a variety of products that such vitriol can be spouted by others who have never met me or contacted me, but as I’ve stated, it goes with the territory and I’ve got a big enough chin (or two!) to take it and crack on. What does concern me is the lack of consideration by these ‘experts’ who willingly post first, think later, without a thought of the hurt it can cause to much newer members. So called ‘Keyboard warriors’ or ‘Carp Police’ are sucking the life out of what should be vibrant, informative forums set up with the sole idea of promoting discussion and help to those who request it.... I’ve seen examples this week; a new member to a particular forum asked advice on a water close to his home, only to be told “......it’s a dump, full of noddies, weapons and trollies, with damaged fish and rats aplenty”. Not only is this incredibly disrespectful to the venue, the angler and other forum users, it was plainly incorrect! The responder had never even visited the fishery, never mind wet a line!! What are the implications of such a response? Obviously, the fishery owner has a case for libel, slander or defamation, but against the poster or the forum owner? The short answer is both. There is no such thing as ‘freedom of speech’ and any comments are subject to lawful challenge, which can cause untold problems for forum owners and the poster. I know the owner of a popular NW forum and he is fighting a constant battle against inconsiderate and downright obnoxious members who continually spout drivel in a misguided attempt to appear far more knowledgeable than they really are. Banning them leads to instant moaning about unfairness, but come on, would you rather have a forum full of content and advice or crap and slander?? We all need to think about what we write as the written word is without context, and subject to interpretation in a variety of ways......there is just not enough love out there sadly......

Racing Form
by Timelord
This week is the annual Goodwood festival known as Glorious Goodwood. This unique track sits high on the Downs and is always a treat and a spectacle. Racing runs from Tuesday to Saturday and is highly competitive with top class animals in action every day and some really tricky handicaps. Channel 4 is covering the first four races every day so I shall concentrate on these events:
Wednesday: 2.00 This race is a marathon handicap over 2m 5f. I think that this one could go to almost any one of the runners but a sporting bet at reasonable odds may be found with the David Pipe runner Raslan who has a relative featherweight and could have been laid out for this. Further up the weights L Frank Baum merits serious consideration as a “saver”. 2.35 Richard Hannon has multiple entries in this Group 2 contest and I like the look of his Rockinante who won first time out and can go on to better things. The other last time out winners Red Duke, Minal, Elkhart and Red Seventy will provide some pretty stern opposition and, just to complicate things further, neither Lethal Force nor Chandlery is out of it in a very competitive event. 3.10 Will Frankel see them off with his explosive power or will Canford Cliffs’ do him with his turn of foot in the last furlong? In an intriguing clash of the hype giants I could envisage either scenario but of the two I would just favour the unbeaten Frankel. However, because these two are so popular and well touted they are unlikely to be much in the way of value. There is very little between all four contestants on my speed ratings so none of them look to be totally forlorn hopes. It is interesting that Freddie Head has sent over his raider Rajsaman and in the hope that there could be an upset at reasonable odds (admittedly this is something of a long shot) I am going for him. 3.45 On my ratings this is clearly down to a three-way go between Whiplash Willie, Bridle Belle, and The Bells O’ Peover with a marked preference for the first-named. Thursday: 2.15 I like the look of the Richard Fahey trained par Las Verglas Star and Calaf for this one. Las Verglas Star getting the nod on jockey bookings. In what looks to be a tight handicap Fulgur, Belgian Bill, Sagramor, Barney Rebel and Swift Alhaarth all have decent chances. 2.45 Noble Storm earns a narrow vote in a fascinating Group 2 King George Stakes . In a race where none can be discounted Swiss Diva, Masamah and Kingsgate native are feared most. 3.15 The Goodwood Cup is another cracking Group2 contest. I just favour Allied Powers to bring home the bacon but he will have plenty on with this bunch. Manighar, Overturn, Tastahil, Geordieland, Bergo and Opinion Poll are just a few of those with top class ratings in my system. In my view this is wide open and you need a decent price about all of them. 3.45 It would be no real surprise to see Wild Coco (won for us last week) waltz off with this Group 3 on the way top better things but I fancy the French raider Shankardeh could put a dent in the plans. Others that have good ratings here are Gallic Star, Ship’s Biscuit, Bramalea, Meeznah and Polly’s Mark. Friday: 2.00 One of my favourites is the consistent Distant Memories and he is the selection here. Harris Tweed is another that I like along with Claremont, Drunken sailor and Red Cadeaux. 2.35 Imaginary World may just have the edge over Questioning, Chef and Ahlaain. 3.10 Soorah won well in a good time for the conditions last time out and earns the nod over Green Destiny and the unlucky last time Dance and Dance. 3.45 Fulbright has my top rating from a good performance last time out in Ireland. It is with reluctance that I pass over him but I think that the unbeaten Tom Tate inmate Parc de Launay may have the edge over this field although Kevin Ryan’s Bogart also looked distinctly useful when scoring on his debut. Saturday: Goodwood: 2.05 If Valery Borzov gets a run he would be the tentative selection. However, in the possibility that he doesn’t run, the reserve selection is Thunderball (also an entry in the Stewards Cup) whose jockey would be claiming a valuable 7lb that may make the telling difference. Fol Hollow also has a decent chance. 2.35 In a wide open contest Western Pearl just earns the call over Ile de Re, Nave, Petara Bay and Icon Dream. 3.10 The admirable Midday can reverse the recent Irish Pretty Polly Stakes form with Misty For Me. That day she was beaten 6 lengths by Misty For Me but to my mind didn’t seem to be at her best and now back on home soil I fancy her to get her revenge. Last time out winners Crystal Capella, Principal Role and Sajjhaa all offer strong credentials but I think that the selection will have most to fear from Snow Fairy who should improve for her comeback run. 3.45 After his performance last Saturday at York Hoof It will no doubt be all the rage to lift the Stewards Cup for the Michael Easterby outfit. I also like the chances of David Nicholls’ Thunderball however (if running here). If Thunderball doesn’t run the reserves are: (in order of preference) High Standing; Ancient Cross; Docofthebay; Hoof It. Newmarket: 2.20 Ahlaain ran quite well on his return to action and would be the selection here if running. If he doesn’t go then I like the chances of Rigolleto and Bertiewhittle with a marginal preference for the former. Last time out winners Flynns Boy, Sinfonico, Easy Over and Sacrosanctus head a veritable string of dangers. 2.50 This Nursery handicap can go the way of David Simcock’s Emirates Art who clocked a good time when winning last time out. Roger Sez and Imelda Mayhem look to be the principal dangers.

LATE LEVELLER DENIES OWLS OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Leeds United in the pre-season friendly clash at Hillsborough on Saturday. Former Leeds midfielder David Prutton put the Owls ahead inside the first ten minutes but a late Max Gradel penalty salvaged a draw for United. Wednesday came out of the traps fast and rattled the woodwork inside three minutes. A long throw from Julian Bennett was directed back into the danger zone by Gary Madine and Chris Sedgwick hit the crossbar with a header from six yards. Leeds responded well and almost took the lead themselves moments later with Patrick Kisnorbo heading wide from a corner before Max Gradel was denied by a last-ditch tackle from Lewis Buxton. But the visitors were made to pay for those missed chances on eight minutes when Prutton fired Wednesday into the lead. The midfielder picked up possession 20 yards from goal before making a quick dart into the area and unleashing an arrowed drive into the far corner beyond the outstretched arm of Paul Rachubka. There was a good pace about the first half and Leeds saw another chance go begging when Adam Clayton’s low centre flashed across goal, with Ramon Nunez unable to make a connection in the middle. Wednesday had a decent shout for a penalty waved away when Prutton intercepted a loose ball pass from Kisnorbo and raced into the area before being bundled over by Paul Connolly - but the foul was deemed to be outside the 18-yard box. Trialist Padraig Amond went close for the Owls from Bennett’s corner with a downward header that sat up just over the crossbar before Leeds striker Alex Mendy dispatched a powerful strike into the side netting. Five minutes into the second half, Leeds almost found their equaliser but for a superb clearance off the line by Owls captain Rob Jones. Former Wednesday loanee Lloyd Sam cut inside from the left and side footed past Weaver but Rob Jones was well placed on the line to deflect the ball onto the post and out for a corner. The second half then sparked into life on 57 minutes when Clayton’s volley from outside the area was bravely blocked by Rob Jones. Jermaine Johnson then took possession from deep inside the Wednesday half and raced upfield past a number of challenges but the Jamaican’s strike went the wrong side of Rachubka’s near post. Weaver was called into action saving comfortably at his near post from Gradel before the Owls went close through Jermaine Johnson moments later, as the pace-ace skipped past Kisnorbo but saw his shot dragged inches wide. But Leeds were back on level terms six minutes from time. Following an aerial challenge involving Reda Johnson and Gradel, the visitors were awarded a penalty which the latter duly dispatched beyond Weaver, to salvage a late draw for the visitors.
