7 DAY TV GUIDE

Now 30 years on, the fair is still delivering on its initial promise by allowing children in free to enjoy an action packed day full of fun and entertainment from 9am to 6.60pm. Fair organiser Christopher Lloyd Owen said: “The fair is a fantastic day out for all the family as well as excellent value too. There is lots for children to see, try and discover from the old-fashioned fairground to walking on water, pony rides and a fun family dog show. The spectacular entertainment can’t

fail to draw gasps and includes a top army parachute team dropping down at speed into our main ring and the Household Cavalry performing The Musical Ride and of course the jaw dropping Red Arrows display on two days.” This year, Michael Vaughan, the former England cricket captain and a regular visitor to the Derbyshire country estate, is fair President and will be out and about meeting the crowds on the opening day. Michael Vaughan, who lives in Baslow, said:

“I’ve been many times to the Chatsworth Country Fair with my family and always had a great time, so I was delighted to be asked to be involved. Having lived in Derbyshire for six years, I believe this event is a great showcase of rural life as well as the chance to see lots of fantastic entertainment and try out a few new activities as well.” The fair also boasts one of the largest Horse Driving meets of the year, one of the biggest hot air balloon lifts, a major sporting clay pigeon shoot, the

Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS

Fred is 32 years old and he is still single. One day a friend asked,” Why aren’t you married? Can’t you find a woman who will be a good wife?” Fred replied, “ Actually, I’ve found many women I wanted to marry, but when I bring them home to meet my parents, my mom doesn’t like them.” His friend thought for a moment and said,”I’ve got the perfect solution, just find a girl who is just like your mother.” A few months later they met again and his friend said, “Did you find the perfect girl? Did your mother like her?” With a frown on his face, Fred answered,”Yes, I found the perfect girl. She was just like my mother. You were right, my mother liked her very much.” Then friend said,”Then, what’s the problem?” Fred replied,” my father doesn’t like her.”

round-up by stuart renton

This week sees the return of two of the worst shows to grace our television screens: X Factor and Big Brother; the twin pimples on the butt of low brow television. We all know the X Factor is fake, that the contestants are little more than cattle at a farmer’s market and that the show is vacuous, mindless drivel of the worst kind. It doesn’t have one redeeming feature (except, perhaps, the end credits), yet a vast proportion of the UK watches this dross on a weekly basis. They changed the line-up, but bizarrely, they didn’t get rid of insipid Louis Walsh. How did that happen? Expect the newspapers to be dominated with X Factor stories until Christmas. How lucky are we? Even though X Factor directly contributes to the dumbing down of the nation, it’s far from the worst thing to hit our screens… We hoped it would never return. We prayed. Oh how we prayed. And even though we sacrificed all the farmyard pets we could find to any god that would listen, Big Brother, the show that killed style or sophistication, is back. The ‘celebrity’ part is a bit of a stretch, for this year’s ‘stars’ are, with the exception of a handful, unrecognisable. Let’s call them Zelebrities. Zelebrities found ‘fame’ through having a train wreck of a life, or more honestly, because they’ve shagged someone famous. No one cares about them, yet like flies on cow dung, they’re everywhere over summer. One can’t turn on the TV without seeing Kerry Katona wailing about her latest relationship disaster, or how some nobody lost three pounds with the newest fad diet. I honestly have no idea why these shows are so popular. What’s the appeal of locking these nobodies in a house together? Merely hearing their uneducated drivel brings a bit of breakfast back up in my mouth. Oh look, the plastic bird from The Only Way is Essex with the big jugs is trying to work out what an MP is. How funny… Oh it’s fake, I hear you cry (most of her chest certainly is), but it’s not. It’s really not. These are the people the media has decided are popular. They’re the ones with the voices, not the doctors or scientists or humanitarians. We place less merit in big brains than we do big jugs (and false tans). It’s insane. And we snort these shows up because we’re told by the newspapers that it’s the best thing ever! We’d rather watch Katona’s next drunken outburst on Channel 5 than we would a show that makes us think. It’s train wreck television at its absolute worst. Yet, despite my protestations to turn over and watch Newsnight, these shows are here to stay. I’m going to toss myself off a cliff right now! Am I feeling suicidal? No, of course not!

Sheffield 50+ - The Voice of Older People Heard Nationally

Physical activity and exercise can help you stay healthy, energetic and independent as you get older

housework don’t count towards your 150 minutes because the effort isn’t hard enough to increase your heart rate. If you want to stay pain-free, reduce your risk of mental illness, and be able to go out and stay independent well into old age, you need to keep moving. It’s that simple. There are lots of ways you can get active, and it’s not just about exercising. “As people get older and their bodies decline in function, physical activity helps to slow that decline,” says Dr Nick Cavill, a health http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/fitness/Pages/ promotion consultant. “It’s important they activities-for-the-elderly.aspx remain active or even increase their activity as they get older.” Adults aged 65 and over spend on average Most people as they get older want to keep in 10 hours or more each day sitting or lying touch with society – their community, friends down. housework don’t count towards your 150 minutes because the effort isn’t hard enough to raise your heart rate. Getting started What you do will depend on your own circumstances, but as a guiding principle you should always do activities that you enjoy. Healthy weight • Adults who are overweight can improve their health by meeting the activity guidelines, even if they don’t lose weight. • To lose weight, you’re likely to need to do more than 150 minutes a week and make changes to your diet. • Start by gradually building up towards 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week. If you’re already active, you may find it useful to know that you can reap the same health benefits from 75 minutes (1 hour and 15 minutes) of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, such as running or singles tennis. As a rule of thumb, 75 minutes of vigorousintensity aerobic activity can give similar health benefits as 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. Research shows that it’s never too late to adopt and reap the health benefits from a more active lifestyle. For example, older adults who are active will reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke to a similar level as younger people who are active. If you’ve been inactive for a while, you don’t have to rush into exercising. It’s important to build up activity gradually to reach recommended levels. You will still be improving your health in the process, and you’ll reduce your risk of falls and other ailments. “The biggest benefits come to those who start from scratch,” says Dr Cavill. “It’s moving from a sedentary lifestyle to a moderately active one that makes the biggest difference to your health. The more you do, the greater the health benefits.”

NHS Sheffield is looking at how services can be improved to enable more people to die at home or in their care home if they choose this as their preference. To help them to do this, they want to better understand the views and experiences of carers and patients across Sheffield. They are looking to gather experiences – whether positive or negative - about all aspects of the care and support received, this could include communication between you/your loved ones and doctors/nursing staff; practical support at home; support for you/your loved one to return home after being in hospital; pain relief; and the availability of care and support during the night and at weekends. If you feel able to share your experiences and thoughts they would particularly like to understand more about: • What is/was most important to you about the care and support available at this time? • What could have been done differently or better to make your experience easier? NHS Sheffield has asked The Campaign Company, a research and communications agency, to carry out this work so that experiences can remain confidential and be anonymised it is shared with anyone who works for the NHS. NHS Sheffield would be grateful if you were able to spare the time to share your experiences and thoughts before Friday 2 September. VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques

The Radio Nightingale Sunshine lottery has changed! There is now just one draw per week but the top prize is £25,000. The cost is still £1 per line. Prizes are available for matching three through to all six numbers correctly, and all prizes are guaranteed with no sharing if more than one person matches the sequence. The Radio Nightingale lottery winning numbers are taken from Fahrenheit temperatures around Europe, with the last digit of the temperature in six cities forming the winning sequence with which your numbers must match. Not only has this change increased your prizes, but the money the lottery makes for Radio Nightingale is even bigger too! The Sunshine Lottery is administered by The Weather Lottery and a huge 45% of proceeds will be coming to Radio Nightingale. CLUBS & THE INTERNET CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

The internet is now a take-forgranted part of modern life. There is such a vast array of information out there in cyberspace for all of us to access that it can be quite overwhelming. REVIEW:V FESTIVAL by KT Evans

PREVIEW: LEEDS FESTIVAL by KT Evans

Slap bang in the heart of festival season and allround attendees favourite, V Fest once again gave an almighty salute to the front runners in the UK charts. With some stonking headliners aswell as a range of acts across the entire spectrum of music, it’s more than easy to see how the event attracts audiences of over eighty thousand each year. Ran by business mogul Richard Branson, V Fest is in its fifteenth year of bringing a triumphant music extravaganza to the people…and by God they sure got it right again! Spread over hundreds of aches of land, the site itself could not have been selected any better. With four stages encased within a selfcontained arena, food stalls / clothing tents / bars came ten a penny within the main setup, meaning traipsing back to the tent every ten minutes was not necessary…lazy…us…never! Ostrich burgers, legal highs, V Healthy stalls, you name it, it was there meaning that anyone who wanted to pay £5 for a burger was catered for. In co-ordination with the festivals overall vibe, the line-up served as a salute to everyone’s music tastes. Although having N-Dubz to follow Good Charlotte on Saturday afternoon did seem a slight contradiction in words, it did mean that people were willing to watch bands they may not have necessarily gone to see themselves…all adding to the electrifying vibe within the huge crowds. On the other hand however it did mean that you could be in a crowd where nobody really knew or appreciated the music…this could certainly be said for main Sunday Headliners Arctic Monkeys, who although put on a cracking show didn’t seem to get the audience riled. V Festival crowds-where were you when the encore chants should have taken place? Why did you not go crazy when ‘I Bet That You Look Good On The Dance Floor’ was played? Strange… Having said this, as the line-up did cover indie to rock to rap music, it would be pointless trying to compare the different acts level of performance as musically they are so different therefore attract a very different crowd…but surely the festival isn’t SO pop based that people don’t even listen to Arctic Monkeys? It would be naïve to think so yes, however there was an overall distinct feel the audience just weren’t ‘getting it.’ Rihanna on the reverse…smashed it! Arguably the biggest name in pop music at the moment, RiRi not only had the entire crowd eating from the palm of her hands, but also had the biggest audience numbers of the weekend. Singing numbers from all of her hugely successfully studio albums, Rihanna ensured her performance would go down as one of the greats in V history. Vocally spotless, the songstress supplied that all needed headliners injection to the already hyped up viewing public… she clearly knows how to get things done and delivered spot-on for the audience at V Festival.

Leeds festival insider joke: They still haven’t found Alan! (If you know what that means, top marks!) A line-up that could quite literally blow the top of the NME tent, this year plays host to not three but four cracking headlining bands all prepared to deliver one of the best weekends within the festival circuit. The main stage on Friday 26th August, which has historically played host to the likes of Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys and Guns ‘n’Roses will see The View, Friendly Fires, Elbow and, voted the best live band in the world…Muse headline. Being their only European Show of 2011, Muse are to bring their amazing set list, to include all the massive tunes from their incredible back-catalogue, so expect something huge from one of the UK’s most celebrated rock acts. Friday will also see 2manydjs, album producers for some of the UK’s pop royalty, aswell as hugely anticipated Death From Above 1979, Panic! At The Disco and The Streets, all to grace the NME Radio 1 stage. And as for the Festival Republic Stage…the one and only Pete Doherty…(If he makes it!) Saturday 27th, yet other blinder of a line-up will see My Chemical Romance headline, with Thirty Seconds to Mars as headline support. American Punk Rockers, The Offspring are also to take to the infamous stage, as Leeds and Reading is the bands only UK festival appearance of 2011…you better not miss it! Sheffield’s Bring Me The Horizon also have a main stage spot, injecting some heavily needed screamo metal within the mix. Along with these, New Found Glory and The Blackout, aiding the stonking line-up for the weekend. The NME Radio 1 stage will be showcasing no other than Beady Eye, Liam Gallagher’s highly anticipated new project, along with West London trio White Lies and The Vaccines, who supported the Arctic Monkeys at their hometown gig in Sheffield in June. With not one but two headliners on Sunday 28th, Sheffield’s very own Pulp are quite simply one of the most popular and successful British groups of our time. Not only are they winners of the sought-after Mercury Music Prise, they also have a repertoire of top-notch tunes; ‘Common People,’ ‘Disco 2000’ and ‘Do You Remember The First Time’ which they will no doubt be delivering to the masses. Sharing the headline spot along with Pulp will be The Strokes, a revolutionary indie band form the USA. With their album ‘Is This It’ being voted the album of the decade in NME, along with a reputation as first-class live performances, the five-piece’s set is one of huge anticipation. Joining the main stage line-up includes eighties legends Madness along with Two Door Cinema Club, Seasick Steve and The Pigeon Detectives. The NME Radio 1 stage is set to showcase Jane’s Addiction, the notorious Crystal Castles, along with Bombay Bicycle Club and Everything Everything.

Tickets go on sale very soon for next year’s V Festival, so keep checking www.vfestival.com

Angler’s Corner by Clint Walker

This week, I was lucky enough to be invited to one of the NW’s premier day ticket fisheries. Pendle View situated at the head of the Ribble Valley, has some of the best day ticket carping available in the country, and is home to Lancashire biggest carp, which at 47lbs 6ozs, is known as ‘Butt Head’! I had just the one fish during my short overnighter, but it hit the net at 25lbs 1oz so I was very pleased, especially as my fishing buddy blanked on his new super baits! Pendle View is a great venue with excellent facilities, a good stock of monster carp and is very professionally run by Dave Harnick and his son. We had a great time and will certainly be back, but if you fancy a crack at this water, then visit www.pendleviewfishery.com to find out more. Whilst on the venue, I noticed a couple of anglers using bait boats; not something I own or use, but during our discussions, I was amazed to see what is available. The general consensus is ‘love ‘em or hate ‘em’ and personally I have no need for one, but I have been stunned by the prices of these things and what comes with them!!! A little research in some of the popular press reveals just how expensive angling can be if you so choose; I came across a company offering upgrade, exchanges and reconditioned boats and decided to delve a little further.....did you know you can have GPS systems fitted? I suppose pin point accuracy is guaranteed, but as my wife said “ I’d rather use satnav!” I’m sure she things we could put it in the van to find out where we are, but having explained it to her, she denies it! What about solar charging panels? A snip at around £110! I would want to be able to charge my mobile phone and cook lunch on it too, but I don’t suppose that is available? (Yet!) Headlamps, navigating lamps, spare batteries, charging kits, fish finders, GPS, echo locators and sounders, colour camera kits, carry bags, aerials and who knows what else is out there for the boat owner; but at what cost?? I did a few quick sums and if I bought a top of the range boat (starts from £899), a GPS system (£625 delivered, it knows where you live then?), a solar charging set up (£110), spare battery kit (£45 each), a carry bag (£69) it comes to around £1750!!! That’s for a remote controlled boat!!! I am truly amazed that anyone can consider that this is an angling essential, but it got worse......a super advanced echo sounder giving 3D imaging (fits most boats) is JUST £3499!!!! That’s right, £3499!!!! That makes a total potential outlay of £5250 just to get bait out over a given spot. It also means that you have something which cost more than my wife’s car floating about in front of you!!! If you have the money, good luck to you, but I think I’ll stick to my throwing stick and catty!!!

It looks like being a poor Saturday’s racing this week. When researching the weekend’s racing I could only find three races scheduled to be televised (all on Channel 4). They are: 3.20 Goodwood – Betfair Celebration Mile – 8 furlongs, Group2 3.30 Newmarket – Chris Blackwell Memorial Stakes – 6 furlongs, Listed 3.50 Goodwood – Betfair Summer Double Second Leg Stakes (Heritage Handicap) – 7 furlongs, Class 2. For the first of these races, the Betfair Celebration Mile, I like the chances of Dermot Weld’s Famous Name who I think has the class to see off this opposition. A multiple Group 3 winner he needs to step up only a little to land his first Group 2 prize and I reckon he can do so. He probably has most to fear from Godolphin’s pair Emerald Commander and Poet’s Voice, and Clive Cox’s Beacon Lodge who keeps running quite well but without winning. Poet’s Voice needs the rains to come to show his best but the weather forecast is in his favour while Emerald Commander has scored at this level in Germany. There are several course and distance winners amongst the rest of the field who may prove troublesome if the selection is not at the top of his game but I still feel he has enough in hand to score. The three year old opposition is also quite strong comprising Strong Suit (a Group 2 winner last time out, where he beat Beacon Lodge into third), Zoffany (ran well in France last time) and Dubawi Gold. Of the three Strong Suit looks to have the best chance but may not be a very generous price if the “tissue” price is any guide (currently 5/2 favourite). At the current odds Famous Name’s 8/1 looks much more attractive and, in my book, represents better value.

We buy, sell, part exchange all sea coarse, carp and game tackle, new or second hand. We also take old tackle in part exchange.

The Newmarket 3.30 may go the way of Chris Wall’s Royal Rock who seems to have been a little slow in coming to hand this year but could now be ready to strike. Of the opposition I most fear the likeable Doncaster Rover, Prime Defender and Rose Blossom. However one other with a reasonable outside chance, possibly at a huge price, is Edward Creighton’s Piccadilly Filly who probably warrants a small stakes each way “saver”. This race looks pretty open to me so confidence in the selection is only moderate. The Goodwood 3.50 is another “almost a pin job”. It looks really competitive and wide open. I am going for Mark Campion’s runner Webbow to land the spoils but with not too much

35

confidence. He did win last time out over this course and distance, having run some good races previously this summer and looks to have come right back to his best form of a couple of years ago. Another at the peak of his powers at present and a clear second preference to the selection is Tim Easterby’s Grissom who is running out of his skin at present and won well last time at Doncaster. Of the remaining opposition Richard Whitaker’s Damika will be a big danger if reproducing his running when second last time out over an inadequate 5 furlongs at Sandown and, of the rest, David Nicholls’ pair Thunderball and Docofthebay, Kevin Ryan’s Advanced and Patrick Chamings’ Woodcote Place (another to win last time out) look to provide most danger to the selection. On a day when good quality racing is pretty thin on the ground it looks as though it may pay to invest only minimum stakes. Good Luck! Last week’s results: From 17 races where the selected horses ran many performed well but didn’t score. However there were two winners (5/1 and 9/4) returning 9.25 points for the 17 points staked giving a level stakes loss of 7.75 points. The final resultant selections and corresponding results were: York: Wednesday 2.00 Strike up the Band – 18th @ 33/1 2.30 Caledonian Spring – 4th @ 25/1 3.05 Seville – 3rd @ 5/6 3.40 Midday – 2nd @ 5/2 Thursday 2.00 Hestian - 19th @ 15/2 2.30 Fire Lily – 2nd @ 4/1 3.05 Pintura – 3rd @ 6/1 3.40 Vita Nova – 2nd @ 9/2 Friday 2.00 Mc Birney – 7th @ 16/1 2.30 Reply – 6th @ 5/1 3.05 Nationalism – 6th @ 9/1 3.40 Prohibit – 3rd @ 12/1 Saturday 2.00 Doncaster Rover – won @ 5/1 2.30 Whiplash Willie – 2nd @ 10/1 3.05 Allied Powers – 5th @ 20/1 3.40 All selections non runners Sandown: 2.15 Ramona Chase – 4th @ 25/1 2.45 Talwar –won @ 9/4

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2011/12 OWLS BACK TO WINNING WAY MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk

The Owls returned to winning ways with a 2-1 win over ten-man Notts County at Hillsborough on Saturday. And they had to come from behind to do so after Jeff Hughes gave County an early lead from the penalty spot. But goals from Julian Bennett and Gary Madine overturned the deficit and ensured victory following successive away defeats to Bournemouth and Bury. Wednesday were out of the traps apace and skipper Lewis Buxton - deputising for the injured Rob Jones - struck narrowly over the crossbar after good work down the left from debutant Ben Marshall. Marshall and Buxton were getting plenty of joy down the flanks but after dominating the early exchanges, the Owls fell behind against the run of play on ten minutes. A long ball into the box was inadvertently handled by Chris Lines and the referee pointed to the spot. Jeff Hughes did the honours from 12 yards. The game became a more balanced affair following that boost for the visitors and Karl Hawley sent in a piledriver from distance that flew wide just before the 20-minute mark.

Wednesday responded with Clinton Morrison heading over the bar from Lines’ feed but the County backline was proving tough to penetrate. Most of the play was in the middle of the park as half time approached as both goalkeepers pretty much took a watching brief. The Owls needed a swift boost after the break and got exactly that on 53 minutes. Morrison did well to win possession and scoop the ball across goal for Bennett, who thumped in an unstoppable volley from six yards. The home side had their tails up and duly went into the lead on 67 minutes. David Prutton slotted Buxton in down the right and the defender sent a teasing low cross into the heart of the danger zone, leaving Madine with a simple tap-in. Five minutes later, though, County could and should have been level. A loose ball in the area fell kindly to substitute Craig Westcarr, who had time and space to pick his spot but blazed high and wide. Then there was more misery for the Nottingham outfit when they lost Neal Bishop with 13 minutes to go. The County captain was late in a tackle on Jose Semedo and picked up a second yellow card that was promptly upgraded to red. There was no coming back from that blow for Martin Allen’s side, who returned to the Midlands pointless, while Wednesday put their season firmly back on track.

MEGSON BENNETT IN GAFFERʼS REACTION www.swfc.co.uk

Gary Megson has spoken of his delight following the Owls’ 2-1 win over Notts County. Wednesday returned to winning ways with goals from Julian Bennett and Gary Madine overturning Jeff Hughes’ first half penalty. And Megson was pleased with the way in which his side showed the necessary character to secure all three points. He said: “I thought it was a terrific performance. We showed a lot of character to win that game. It’s the first time in a long time that I can remember that we’ve come from behind to win. “I was disappointed with the way we conceded the goal because one of our players has gone to sleep and we have to be better than that. “But overall, we were terrific. Ben Marshall and Lewis Buxton got crosses into the box and looked really dangerous. “If anything, we should have scored more than the two goals that we did.” Megson also had words of encouragement for Madine, who got off the mark this season with his close range winner. The manager said: “I said to Gary before the game that when I was manager at Bolton, Kevin Davies scored seven goals in a season but his presence created a lot more for other players. “Gary did well for his goal, it was a tap-in but he showed good anticipation to the get into that position. “Clinton Morrison did ever so well to keep the ball in and get the cross over so they can both be pleased with that.”

THE MOOD OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Julian Bennett was delighted to get off the mark with Wednesday at the weekend - and hailed the character shown by the Owls as they came from behind to beat Notts County. Goals from Bennett and Gary Madine turned potential defeat into victory and the defender said: “It was a great feeling for me when that ball hit the back of the net and I was delighted that goal set us up for the win. “It’s always nice to get your first goal for your club and it’s even better when it helps you win a game. “Hopefully, there will be more to come.” Saturday’s win was the Owls’ third in a row on home soil this season and whilst naturally pleased with that return, Bennett is conscious of the need to pick up points out of base. He added: “It was great to get the win for the fans because after we lost the two games away against Bournemouth and Bury, I’m sure they weren’t best pleased. “We need them onside, we gave them something to shout about on Saturday and that’s all they ask.”

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2011/12 MONTY GOAL PRESERVES GREAT START MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

Nick Montgomery netted with a thunderbolt goal as United continued the unbeaten start to the season. On the stroke of half-time, United’s captain drilled an effort past Owain Fon Williams his first goal since March 2010. However, an equaliser ten minutes from time from substitute Joss Labadie denied United a fourth consecutive League One win. Wilson named the same team that finished the Walsall game to start against Tranmere in United’s first visit to Prenton Park in over ten years - midfielders Williamson and Doyle were handed starting roles after impressing in midweek. McDonald missed out with an ankle problem, whilst MendezLaing dropped to the bench, where he was joined by the fit-again Porter. United continued with the 4-4-2 system and a pre-match downpour, plus a blast from the sprinklers, greased the surface and the ball whizzed across the turf when Devaney

fizzed in an early shot but Simonsen saved well. It was Simonsen’s goal that was the busier of the two in the early stages. Showunmi, with Maguire marking him tightly, headed over an Akins cross on five minutes and then a volley from McChrystal was straight at the Blades goalkeeper. Quinn was the recipient of heavy challenges from Devaney and Welsh within the space of five minutes - both were booked - and in between receiving treatment, the Irishman fired in United’s first shot but Fon Williams made a comfortable save. Headers at either end of the pitch came close to breaking the deadlock, just two minutes apart. For Tranmere, on 15 minutes, Robinson got the better of Montgomery and picked out an unmarked Akins at the back post but his header was blocked by Simonsen’s feet, whilst Lowton’s header from Quinn’s corner was pushed out by Fon Williams, with the home side clearing the subsequent melee. From another Blades corner, which was half-cleared, Maguire’s held up cross was met by Slew but Fon Williams made another save. United’s defence were still having to work hard to keep the home side at bay and Quinn was cautioned for an off-the-ball trip on Robinson. Devaney’s inswinging free-kick saw Showunmi head at Simonsen but the chances began to slow as half-time approached. Both sides continued to test the other with crosses from all angles.

However, with the kettle boiling for the halftime cuppa, the Blades struck, with a superb 25-yard effort... from the inspirational number four! Slew was involved on the left and Quinn laid into the path of the onrushing MONTGOMERY, whose first-time blast beat Fon Williams. He was understandably mobbed by his team-mates, who recovered their composure to see out the remaining moments before the interval. The slow start to the second period would have been of little concern to Unitedites. The only chance of note in the first 15 minutes of the half came from Robinson’s free-kick, which flew over the crossbar. Both managers made a change, Porter introduced for United, whilst Tranmere’s sub, Tiryaki, saw his back post header plucked out of the air by Simonsen. Robinson attempted to get Quinn, already on a booking, sent off but only succeeded in earning himself a yellow card but it did turn the temperature up somewhat and both benches exchanged words. Williamson was the next to be booked, Robinson was again involved, but it was the latter’s replacement, on as a substitute, who drew the home side level on 80 minutes. LABADIE had only been on the field three minutes when he deflected Buchanan’s cross, following a short corner, between Simonsen and a defender on the left-post. United responded with Doyle firing over but it the home side continued to look a threat and Montgomery was booked for a late challenge on Buchanan.

WILSON GAFFERʼS REACTION www.sufc.co.uk

Danny Wilson speaking immediately after the one all draw at Prenton park described himself as being happy that the players were disappointed. Having watched his team surrender a one goal advantage Wilson said: “You can’t win every game, the players are sitting in the dressing room very disappointed with what really is a good hard earned point” In what at times was quite a bruising encounter, the Blades manager indicated that he was very pleased with the way his team stood up to the physical challenge. “I thought we battled really well against a very strong psychical Tranmere side. They put us under an arial bombardment which we fought off very well.” It was a hard fought game that saw blades winger Stephen Quinn singled out of some particularly hard challenges. “I thought Quinny was brilliant today he got kicked from pillar to post sometimes out there. And he coped admirably. Tranmere is a very tough place to come as we found out today. Although the players are disappointed not to have won the game, many teams will leave Prenton park with nothing this season. We are very pleased to remain undefeated.” said Wilson.

MILLERS NEWS 2011/12 MILLERS NOTCH FOUR MATCH REPORT www.themillers.co.uk Rotherham United twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Barnet at Don Valley. The Millers fell behind late in the first half but were back on level terms early in the second period through Troy Brown, before Adam Le Fondre poked home to cancel out Izale McLeod’s penalty. Andy Scott made two changes to the side that beat Crewe on Tuesday night. Brown and Mark Bradley were drafted in to replace Ryan Cresswell and Jason Taylor, with Cresswell dropping to the bench. Six minutes into the game the Millers had the first attempt on goal. Lewis Grabban worked some space on the edge of the area before laying the ball into the path of Gareth Evans, who stabbed the ball wide from 20 yards. Barnet were almost presented with an opportunity on 10 minutes when Dale Tonge was caught in possession by McLeod. The striker surged into the area before slamming his shot into the back of Brown. Then a minute later a cross by McLeod to the back post found Mark Marshall, who spurned a really good opportunity by firing over from eight yards out. After quiet period where neither side really had any chances, it was the Millers who came to life just before the half hour mark. The recalled Bradley picked up possession 25 yards out and powered in a low drive which Dean Brill held smartly at his near post. Barnet were starting to look the more likely to open the scoring and 10 minutes before the break they duly took the lead. A corner from Marshall found defender Clovis Kamdjo who nodded the ball beyond Conrad Logan, who may feel he should have done better. The Millers responded well and almost carved out an opening when good work from Danny Schofield down the

right resulted in a cross, which was just behind Grabban at the near post. Rotherham levelled the game four minutes into the second half.Evans’ cross from the left was turned behind for a corner, which Schofield delivered towards Brown at the far post. The summer signing from Ipswich rose to head against the back of a Barnet defender, before smashing the rebound past Brill to register his first goal for the Millers. The visitors were given the chance to re-take the lead on 61 minutes after McLeod was brought down in the area by skipper Michael Raynes. He picked himself up to smash the ball into the roof of Logan’s net, leaving the ‘keeper with no chance.McLeod almost had another on 68 minutes when he broke the offside trap, but Brown produced an excellent block on the line to deny him a second of the afternoon. On 76 minutes the Millers came within a whisker of equalising.A good move down the right involving Le Fondre and substitute Marcus Marshall forced a corner, which Barnet failed to clear, but Bradley saw his effort cannon back off the crossbar from 16 yards. With eight minutes remaining the Millers did level.Danny Harrison poked a ball forward from midfield, which Le Fondre latched onto and coolly poked through Brill’s legs. Le Fondre then headed over from six yards after getting ahead of his marker to meet Schofield’s cross from the right wing. Rotherham: Logan; Tonge (Marshall HT), Cresswell, Brown, Newey, Bradley, Harrison, Schofield, Evans (Pringle 78), Grabban (Holroyd HT), Le Fondre. Subs not used: Warrington, Cresswell. Barnet: Brill; Senda, Uddin, Kamdjo, Parkes, Byrne (Fraser 89), Hughes, Price (Geohaghon 87), Marshall, Deering (Holmes 73), McLeod. Subs not used: O’Brien, Taylor. Attendance: 3,546 (82)

ROVERS NEWS 2011/12 ROVERS SUFFER HAMMER BLOW MATCH REPORT www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk

The Rovers include their new loan signing, Milan Lalkovic from Chelsea, in their starting line-up at Derby County today. However, missing from the Rovers line-up was James Coppinger with an injury suffered in training. The Rovers kicked off and immediately won a corner on their right that was headed over the bar by Naylor. Minutes later a good move down the Rovers left was spoilt by Chris Brown’s heavy touch that lost him the chance of a clear shot. Then, in the 6th minute, the Rams won a corner on their right. Ben Davies swung the ball into the middle and a late run by KILBANE bulleted the ball into the net. The Rovers hit back by winning a corner but nothing came from it. Derby were having the bulk of possession at this stage moving the ball around with accuracy and pace but the Rovers had a good chance in the 12th minute when Chris Brown fed Barnes in the area but he snatched at his shot putting it high and wide much to the derision of his former fans. Past the quarter hour and the match settled down to a combative midfield battle. In the 24th minute the home team had to make a substitution, Croft coming on for Ward. Just before the half hour Hendick cut across the field from the left before giving to Brayford, who shot wide from 25yards. As the game wore on the Rovers pushed on to the home team and pushed them back on defence as they gained a fair amount of possession. Whilst not troubling the keeper overmuch, the Rovers did have most of the play in the last ten minutes. A couple of corners brought a shot from Oster from 20yards that was too high and then minutes later Gillett shot over from 25yards following another Rovers corner. Derby set the second half in motion and within seconds were two goals up when Ben Davies went down the left, Dumbuya slipped and left the Derby player all the time in the world to put a good ball into the middle where the six foot plus Steven Davies got above everybody to head into the far corner of the net. It took ten minutes of continuous

pressure by the Rams before the Rovers got into the Derby half and in the space of two minutes won a couple of corners, the second of which came out to Lalkovic who was just a foot over the bar from 25yards. Bennett came on as substitute for Reece Brown but had only just got on the field when Ben Davies received from the right and from the edge of the penalty area fired low into the far corner of the net giving Woods no chance. Minutes later and Steve Davies shot high and wide from the right side of the area and was then subbed. The Rovers made substitutions and pushed forward but there was little cohesion among the team.In the 79th minute a shgot from long range from Oster was deflected for a corner from which the ball came out to Gillett and a good drive was kicked off the line by Bailey. Although the Rovers tried hard to get something from the game it just wasn’t on. Derby had a grip of the game and were not going to let go. This was Rovers fourth defeat in a row and Derby’s fourth in consecutive games. The contrast in fortune tells it’s own story.
