ART FOR EVERYONE IN SHEFFIELD THIS WEEKEND Art lovers will be spoiled for choice when the region’s biggest outdoor art and crafts show comes to Sheffield. Over 300 artists and craft workers will be exhibiting around 4,000 pieces of their work in the picturesque setting of Sheffield’s Botanical Gardens next weekend (3-4 September). Now in its 8th year, visitors regularly flock from all parts of the country to view top quality work in the North of England’s largest outdoor art show. A rare opportunity will be on offer to view paintings

from the private family collection of the highlyrespected local artist Peter Owen Jones, who passed away in 1993. Peter was born in Bradwell and taught art in Sheffield schools, but his family is continuing to ensure his talent continues to be seen by the people of Sheffield. Peter has an international reputation for capturing the atmosphere of the railway and he became a member of the Guild of Railway Artists in 1979. In his own words: “The Railway is my real passion. I can’t give a plausible reason for this

obsession nor shall I make excuses, but I hope you might share it with me just a little.” The sheer range of creativity on display at Art in the Gardens is wider than ever, and includes photography, ceramics, textiles, print making, leatherwork, wood turning, glass work, jewellery, sculptures in metal, wood, and stone. The individual styles and subject matter cover realism to impressionism and all the way to abstract, by both professionals and talented amateurs. It all adds up to make a

grand day out for all the family, something for everyone, with a children’s area, a stage with musical performances throughout the weekend, an Open Art Exhibition, artists and makers creating a bustling market on the main lawns in view of the pavilions, and much more of the Gardens to explore and enjoy. Councillor Leigh Bramall, the Council’s Cabinet member for Environment and Transport said: “There really will be something for everyone at the Art in the Gardens show this year. There’s so much to

see and do that it will be difficult for anyone to fit it into just one day! The Botanical Gardens make a superb setting for the show and it seems to get better every year, so we’re confident it will be a great success again this year.” The show will be open from 10.30am until 5.30pm on both days, with admission at just £6 for adults and accompanied children under 16 years admitted free. There’s a free bus service every 20 minutes from the Tesco Abbeydale Road Park and Ride car park on Saturday and Sunday

between 10am and 6pm. For more details about the event phone 0114 273 6839 or visit http://www. welcometosheffield.co.uk/ artinthegardens. There are a limited number of tickets still available for the Exclusive VIP Preview Evening on Friday (2 September) between 6.30 and 9.30pm. The £6 tickets admit two adults (sorry, no children) and are available on a first come basis from the Gate House gift shop, phone 0114 268 6025 or visit www.gatehousegiftshop. co.uk .
