was so exciting. We’d been working hard on our song as part of the Children’s Festival and just being in a real recording studio was great enough. When we were invited to sing on a real track that will actually be released was amazing. Thanks to the festival project we’re getting to do what people my age all over the country can only dream of.” The ‘be the best you can be’ project has engaged over 1,000 children from schools across Sheffield in singing, song –

writing and music. The project started with primary and secondary school children working with poets and contributing words and phrases to a ‘lyric bank’. A small group of talented musicians from Sheffield Springs Academy used the lyric bank to write an inspiring and uplifting song called ‘Don’t Hold Back’ The group also wrote the accompanying music. The group worked with band development professionals Kat Eaton and Nick Atkinson from Badge Music and the

track was recorded at Steelworks Studio in Sheffield which has played host to musical greats including Aretha Franklin, Jarvis Cocker and Take That. Eliot said “The group sounded awesome on the Reason 4 track. Steelworks Studio has seen its fair share of famous artists over the years but it was great to see a new group of shining stars fulfil a lifelong dream.” The Reason 4’s new album is due out in November this year, and the Sheffield youngsters

will be heard by millions up and down the country. Before that the group from Springs Academy will perform their ‘Be the best you can be’ song at the opening ceremony for the 2011 Sainsbury’s UK School Games at Sheffield Arena. Councillor Jackie Drayton, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People at Sheffield City Council said: “Every year thousands of Sheffield youngsters are given a chance to get involved in the arts thanks to the Children’s Festival. This

story is a real testament to the work we do to try and engage young people and help them release their creativity. “ Sheffield Children’s Festival is one of the largest and longest running festivals of its kind in the UK. For more than 20 years it has been engaging children in the arts. Over the years well over a quarter of a million children, young people and families have taken part in Sheffield Children’s Festival.

Copley’s Column

The disbanding of top local band, Junkyard Dog, is like the end of an era for me. Originally formed by ex-Human League star, Russ Dennett and John, the Fox, Richardson, they were joined by guitarist and keyboard player John, bass player Steve and drummer Chris and the band was born, playing many gigs, many local to my home. From day one, they attracted huge following, filling venues wherever they played. It was my support of them that was responsible for me meeting Caron, the one true love of my life. The format of the band changed and Russ and John were joined by Fraser Bird on drums and Pete Morgan on bass guitar, both excellent musicians. This wonderful band, and Russ Dennett in particular, have been responsible for maintaining the trade, in these difficult trading times, in all the venues where they have regularly performed, and will be sadly missed and hard to replace. Anybody who have not had the pleasure of attending one of their gigs has seriously missed out. Of course, they really endear themselves to me by supporting many charities over the years without asking for either a fee or expenses. I wish all the lads all the best in the future, doing what they do best, and really hope to get them back together on a one off basis at my next birthday celebrations in August. I stayed in last Wednesday night for the first time in over two months (on a Wednesday) due to the ending of the Search for a Star competition, at the Pacific Bar in Chesterfield. There are a large number of these talent competitions being held at various venues which is fine, and while I know that some great talent comes to the fore in this way, I worry that with pubs and clubs closing at an alarming rate, there will be little opportunity for the winners to

capitalise on their talents. I had breakfast with Stephanie King, this week, at the Chantry Hotel, who is the producer of top talent competition for the youngsters ‘Stars of the Future’. Stephanie has done much to launch her pupils on a full time singing career, notably previous winners of the competition Lee Lambert, currently enjoying a successful summer season on the east coast and Catherine Cooper, who is now a top act on the clubs. Stephanie, a top artiste in her own right over many years, has put an awful lot back into the business and deserves much credit. Diana Edwards appears all over the world as Agnetha, the blond one in the number one Abba tribute band Bjorn Again. To supplement this, she and Sarah Fearnley, who is Frida in the band, have formed an exciting duo, aptly named Agnetha and Frida, and will be singing all the Abba songs. This duo will be the cream of the crop and information on forthcoming gigs and how to book them can be obtained by logging on to their soon to be opened website www.agnethaandfrida.com. I was privy to hearing these two magnificent singers perform as a duo at Diana’s birthday party and I have to say they were really amazing. I have received rave reports about a new bar that has opened in Sheffield, Christian’s, at the Beauchief Hotel, in what used to be Michel’s bar. This is apparently a must for the lads as I understand that the standard of female clientele is very good. By all accounts, it is very busy, which is good to hear in these times of dire economic depression. Two pubs have re-opened in Dronfield, the Hallowes is now the Three Tuns and the Old Sidings is now known as the Dronfield Arms. The advisability of this will be revealed, but I am sure that there is not enough trade for the existing pubs without opening any more. Time will tell.

A man walks into a bar and says, “Bartender, give me two shots.” Bartender says, “You want them both now or one at a time?” The guy says,” Oh, I want them both now. One’s for me and one’s for this little guy here,” and he pulls a tiny three inch man out of his pocket. The bartender asks “He can drink?” “Oh, sure. He can drink.” So the bartender pours the shots and sure enough, the little guy drinks it all up. “That’s amazing” says the bartender. “What else can he do, can he walk?” The man flicks a quarter down to the end of the bar and says, “Hey, Jake. Go get that.” The little guy runs down to the end of the bar and picks up the quarter. Then he runs back down and gives it to the man. The bartender is in total shock. “That’s amazing” he says, “what else can he do? Does he talk?” The man says “Sure he talks, hey, Jake, tell him about that time we were in Africa and you made fun of that witch doctor’s powers!”

Simon Cowell has a lot to answer for. Not only has the King of Smarm created two of the most odious shows to blight our small screens, he’s back from the US with Red or Black, a celebrity filled game show that makes Going for Gold look positively intellectual. Red or Black quite literally has no redeeming features, and never before has anyone managed to stretch out five minutes of content (I’m being kind) into two gruelling hours of the dullest television imaginable. The premise to the show is this: contestants watch celebrities play games, then they have to decide whether the outcome will be red, or black. It’s that simple. In this age of dumbing down, this is the dumbest of the dumb. It’s dumberer. The dumberest! There is only one question (and two answers) on everyone’s lips is: will the next colour be red or is it black? But, does anyone care? I know I don’t. The only red I want to see is the Red Button while I look for something less vacuous to watch. Oh look, the Test Card, that’ll do nicely. Well it’s that or repeatedly banging my head against a wall, both have the same intelligence sapping qualities that Red or Black induce. It’s amazing TV of this calibre gets made, and even worse when you realise it’s got more padding than a thirteen year old girl trying to get into her first nightclub. There’s barely enough content here for a fifteen minute show (that’s including seven minutes of adverts) but flying high under the Cowell flag, Red or Black is proudly stretched out to just shy of a mind boggling two hours. Yet, despite being deprived of content, style or any sophistication, people still watch in droves as the utterly brainlessbut-desperate-for-a-million-quid contestants take part in a show that makes Supermarket Sweep seem like high art / culture. But it’s not over, for burdened as it is, Red or Black has one final insult to deliver: it’s on all week! Cowell, finding a formula that works, is determined to ram his offering down our throats (must… resist… obvious… joke). But don’t worry: when this is finished we’ve got four months of X Factor with all new longer episodes to ‘enjoy’. Won’t that be a treat? Anyway, back to Red or Black, and the only question you have to ask yourself is this: if the show’s prize wasn’t a million quid a night and the media weren’t spoon feeding us with comments about how fantastic it all is, would you REALLY be watching? I think not!

THE FOUR TOPS and THE TEMPTATIONS Legendary Motown sensations The Four Tops and The Temptations are to return to the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Friday 16th March 2012. They will be joined by two very special guests: kings of Seventies R & B disco Tavares and seminal sixties girl band The Crystals. Tickets priced £40 go on sale Friday 9th September at 9am. With Soul and R&B enjoying a dazzling comeback, this tour promises to get three or four generations together, shaking their hips and singing along to the timeless sound of some truly irresistible classics. A few titles? “Reach Out (I’ll be there)” and “It’s All In The Game” from the Four Tops; “My Girl” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” from The Temptations; “Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel” and “More Than A Woman” from Tavares and “Da Doo Ron Ron” and “Then He Kissed Me” from The Crystals. And these are likely to be just the encores after an endless string of unforgettable hits. Being the only ones choosing a baritone over a tenor in Stubbs, The Four Tops managed to stick out from the rest of the Motown roster. Originally from Detroit, Michigan, they moved to LA in the early Seventies and continued playing with no change in their line up until 1997, when Lawrence Payton passed away. The current line up includes original founder member Abdul “Duke” Fakir. Also from Detroit were The Temptations, one of Motown’s most influential and successful recording artists; across five decades, they’ve sold tens of millions of albums, spacing from R & B to funk, disco, soul and even adult contemporary music. Founder and original member Otis Williams is still currently in the band, carrying its important legacy. Tickets for the Four Tops and The Temptations with special guests Tavares & The Crystals. Priced £40 (bookng fe may apply) go on sale Friday 9th September, available in person at the Arena box office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 and online at www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk . Crystal Chakra Healing There are people who love gemstones but don’t know anything about them. I hope I can enlighten you about the Crystals and the Chakra which come together and heal the body.

Know your Crystals There maybe some crystals that have no effect at all, or even some you don’t like. I say follow your intuition. You may be drawn to your favourite colour and consequently choose a crystal of that colour. I have always been drawn to blue crystals so my favourite is Lapis Lazuli.

“Are you obese (or anorexic)? Do you struggle with your weight or with food in general? Is your health at risk from weight related issues? Perhaps you look in the mirror and you just don’t like what you see? Then listen up!” The biggest threat to the population in the 21st century (so far) has been identified as Obesity, with an estimated 1 in 4 adults and 1 in 10 children being obese in 2011 and a significant percentage of those being morbidly so. That figure is literally growing (see government audit report at www.nao.org.uk/ tackling obesity for further details). It is part of the government’s policy to tackle this problem with every means necessary as obesity and its linked illnesses are creating extreme pressure on NHS resources. The estimated cost to the National Health Service is around £4.5 billion a year with the cost to the wider community being four or five times that amount. Obesity has become a topic that has media “legs” and is set to run and run. Unfortunately for those of us who are affected by it (remember 1 in 4 Adults and increasing) the media’s message is not a flattering one and not always helpful. Many documentary shows aiming at helping and educating the public are still portraying people with weight issues as FAT and LAZY and a BURDEN to society and this is neither helpful nor productive. It is our mission to educate those who need our help, the government, and the NHS that a positive self image is the key to unlocking and empowering the potential within every human being to be the best they can be in mind, body and spirit. The phrase FAT TUESDAY comes from the French words “Mardi Gras” which have, over many decades, even centuries, become synonymous with the celebration of life and abundance. It is from this spiritual place of giving thanks that we move forward into a new era of accepting ones self and those around us without judgement but with love and compassion. FAT TUESDAY has a purpose. That purpose is to empower, not only those of us diagnosed as obese (yes I’m one of them), but every living soul who has either now or at some point in their lives suffered with physical limitations or low self esteem and body image, caused by weight and food issues. Super-size or Super-skinny! We are bringing together a Festival-Style Exhibition of health care professionals, modern and traditional, contemporary and alternative. Of style experts and fashion Guru’s. Weight management services, NHS and private. Exercise trainers and promoters from Yoga teachers to do it yourself at home exercise games consoles! Add to the mix Celebs who have made it regardless of their size and shape and those who have famously and publicly beat their weight issues and you are only just touching the surface of what we are trying to achieve.

SY FIREFIGHTERS BIKE TO NEW YORK IN MEMORY OF 9/11 VICTIMS

Two South Yorkshire firefighters are marking the 10th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks by joining their American colleagues on a Chicago to New York motorbike trip. Maltby Crew Manager Richard Barr and Central Firefighter Jason Jenkinson, both Harley Davidson enthusiasts, will join hundreds of US emergency service workers on the bike trip which takes place every year to remember those killed on 9/11. The pair, part of a group of 33 UK firefighters who flew out to America yesterday, leave the Chicago Red Sox stadium on September 6th and arrive at Ground Zero, New York on the 11th for a special memorial service. 343 firefighters and 60 police officers were among the thousands who lost their lives on September 11th 2001, many of them at the World Trade Centre in New York, when terrorists hijacked four passenger planes. Richard said: “By the time we reach New York there’ll be thousands of us biking en masse into New York City. It’s a real privilege to be part of such a huge event, and I’m sure the memorial service itself will be a very emotional occasion, especially for the New York firefighters we’ll be biking with.” Richard and Jason’s route will take them from Chicago to Youngstown, Ohio, onto Gettysburg via the Flight 93 Memorial in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania, then onto Washington DC, Stroudsburg, New Jersey and through the Brooklyn Tunnel to New York. Jason added: “It will be great to represent South Yorkshire’s firefighters over there, and to meet firefighters from all over the world. We’ve both had to save around £3,500 to fund the trip, but I’m sure it will be worth every penny.” Memorial services begin at Ground Zero on September 11th at the exact time the first tower was struck.

Park Inn Sheffield joins nationwide charity clothes swap to help ‘Fiona’s Fund*’ Saturday 10 September 2011, Park Inn Sheffield 14:00 to 16:00 All Park Inn and Radisson Blu hotels across the UK are joining forces to host a nationwide clothes swap. Hotel staff and members of the public will come together to exchange valued - but no longer worn - clothing, shoes and accessories for ‘new to you’ items. Proceeds from the event will be split between Rezidor’s corporate charity, the World Childhood Foundation, and a charity chosen by each of the 32 participating hotels. Park Inn, Sheffield’s chosen local charity is Fiona’s Fund – www.fionasfund.co.uk For a £5 charity donation, participants can revamp their wardrobe for the new season by bringing up to ten items of good quality, clean, clothes, shoes or accessories and swapping them for new finds. Any surplus items that are donated will be given direct to local charity shops. People throw away over 900,000 tonnes of clothing every year in the UK alone – much of which ends up in landfills. Clothes swap initiatives help reduce the impact on the environment and encourage people to think differently about their clothes, while having fun. All Park Inn and Radisson Blu hotels will be accepting donations from 1 September onwards. Items can also be brought along on the day of the clothes swap

Bit of a trip round over the last couple of weeks, starting at Brimmington Social Club where I caught up with “Deep” who have completely changed their show, with new songs, new lighting and a really enjoyable act which ended up with the crowd up and dancing. On Friday I was at Sheffield Trades for the semi-finals of “Trades’ Got Talent”. Hosted as ever by Sue & Paul, it was a great night with all sixteen acts taking part for the seven places up for grabs in the final, and it was a really hard job to pick the lucky ones. A new venue for me was the New Inn, Hemsworth Road where I met Leisl and Stanley, who took over a couple of weeks ago. It was karaoke night with Sue & Paul, who are booked to return there on 16th September, so go along and give them your support! Hopefully this will turn into another great Saturday night venue for live entertainment! Paul (Rocky Horror)

ALCOHOL CONCERN PRAISES PUBS

he argues would have little or no effect on pub prices and “help the pub trade enormously”. He said pubs “should be encouraged and rewarded financially for improving community life.” and calls for action from the industry and government to support “a shift in our drinking culture from the current predominance of a ‘drink to get drunk’ approach to one that encourages maturity, responsibility and a respect for The chief executive of Alcohol community values.” Concern Don Shenker has Julian Grocock, SIBA’s chief praised pubs for improving executive, said: “We have in community life. the past called on Alcohol Writing a column in the Society Concern and health lobbying of Independent Brewers’ organisations to recognise that in membership magazine well-run pubs serving relatively Shenker expressed support for low ABV cask beer, drinking “responsible drinking” and is part of a social occasion, deplores the current drinking rather than an end in itself. It is culture that “values drinking at therefore very encouraging to home over going to the pub.” see Alcohol Concern express He is critical of supermarket some support for pubs in this pricing, calling it ‘a scandal’ that article.” they can sell alcohol so cheaply SIBA has sought to build a and advocating a minimum price relationship with Alcohol Concern, having earlier this year of 50p per alcohol unit, which

WHATʼS IN YOUR SUITCASE? MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

Do you insist on always taking something unusual on holiday with you? I remember as a child Mum and Dad booking the family into an apartment self catering and the kitchen not being equipped with salt and pepper when we got there, which meant the cruet went away with us for the next few years should it happen again. Just the other day I mentioned the survey that’s found that 20% of men apparently insist on always taking one particular item with them that you wouldn’t necessarily think of straight away. We had some interesting guesses as to what it was – slippers, umbrella, tweezers, a tool kit, and Jane in Sheffield even mentioned she’s lucky if her hubby packs his wallet when they go away. The answer was a hair dryer, which surprised me. Sadly I barely have use for a comb nowadays with the poultry amount left on my head! Don’t forget to join me every day for lots of fun, great music and chances to win. All this week I’ve got Dolly Parton CDs to win, plus a chance to double up your prize for a pair of concert tickets to see the lady herself when she visits Sheffield Motorpoint Arena on her Better Days tour this coming Monday. If you haven’t already, make sure you click ‘Like’ on our Facebook page (facebook.com/magicam) for a clue that could win you the ultimate double on Friday’s show as well – 4 tickets on the front row! The winning doesn’t stop there either as we’ll also be giving you Radio Nightingale broadcasts a chance to see the fabulous Jane 24 hours a day, 7 days a week McDonald next week. for the patients and staff of the Switch on to Magic now – 990, Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. For 1305 & 1548 AM and DAB digital more information about the station radio for the best of the 60s, 70s visit www.radionightingale.org.uk and more. This week saw the publication of edition 46 of the Radio Nightingale handbook. This booklet is produced quarterly to distribute information about Radio Nightingale to the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital. It includes information about the stations activities, fundraising, volunteering and most importantly our current programme schedule. The information booklets are supported by advertisements from local businesses included in the publication and we welcome our new supporters of RotherLets and Robix Electrix this edition. If you run a local business and would like to include your details in this professionally produced publication, please get in touch with us as soon as possible. The booklet is distributed around the hospital so passes your message to a variety of people. We have spaces available in the next edition, rates are reasonable and we need to fill them in order to be able to continue with this publication. Take the opportunity to promote yourself in this lowcost advertising medium and be satisfied in the knowledge that you are supporting a local charity at the same time. Give me a call on 01709 304244 to discuss how your business can support Radio Nightingale. Time is running out on your chance to win a brand new Fiat 500 1.2 Pop through the Small Charity Car Draw. Tickets are still available but you’ll need to visit www.radionightingale.org.uk quickly to get your entry. Ticket sales close on 19th September.

GOING UP IN SMOKE CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

We can probably all think of a derelict club somewhere not far from where we live. The half burnt out Dial House club will probably spring to mind for those living in Sheffield, with the shell of the building a sad reflection on its former glory days. In Coventry, the Foleshill Social was once again the target for arsonists in August, the second attack in six months. The derelict club, which opened in 1962 and was once a popular local venue, has stood derelict since going out of business over a year ago. It now suffers the pitiful fate of many other clubs after being closed down and put up for sale. When no takers can be found, as is often the case in these times of economic uncertainty, they are left to rot, attracting the unwelcome attention of those wanting to try out their pyrotechnic skills. It’s a very sorry state of affairs and a very physical reminder for former members living nearby who miss the facilities their club once offered. Derelict clubs are not only an eye-sore but are dangerous and can be costly when fire crews have to be called in. Local people have to face all the commotion and for older people this can be very frightening. The Foleshill Club blaze ripped through both storeys and gave rise to thick plumes of black smoke over the local district. The six hours that it took for the fire brigade to put out the blaze could have been spared if the building had been put to some sort of use instead of left empty all this time. During the previous attack in April, arsonists caused 50% damage to the rear of the building. The club was put up for sale for £300,000 by its owners last October. If it wasn’t an attractive prospect for potential buyers back then, it certainly won’t be now. As private property, nothing can be done to make owners bring former clubs back into use. And if aclub failed, then maybe there is no point in thinking along those lines. But the need for community centres grows stronger as public sector cuts bite hard. Perhaps with some flexible but careful planning and TLC empty clubs could be given some purpose again even if on a temporary basis and made a resource for the local community, rather than an eyesore and a costly fire hazard.

INTERVIEW: THE BLACKOUT by KT Evans

REVIEW: TESSERACT - CORP by KT Evans

‘… Leeds has trumped Reading…sorry Reading!’ reveals Gavin Butler, lead vocalist and all-round lovely guy fronting The Blackout. ‘…Leeds points!’ Having just performed on Saturday’s bill at this year’s Leeds Festival, since their formation onto the UK music scene in 2003, The Blackout have not only gained fans across the world but are regular attendees on any main stage festival. Categorised under the title of post-hardcore, (although let’s be honest, who sticks with these rules anyway?) the six piece from Merthyr have got some pretty exciting things lined up…and have sure as hell done Wales proud. Performing on the main stage with the likes of Thirty Seconds To Mars, My Chemical Romance and Bring Me The Horizon is a certified daunting task, however Gavin seems only in awe of his dedicated fan base. ‘Today was the best Leeds show we’ve had ever… the fans are just amazing. ‘ And deservedly so. 2009 saw The Blackout’s third studio album ‘The Best In Town’ clinch a spot within the UK top forty album charts, with their 2011 release ‘Hope’ coming in at number twenty seven. Not bad to say that the general public seem less and less interested in a heavier genre of music, more intent on listening to chart dominating dub and house music. ‘It seems like our day is the only day that has any balls,’ jokes Gavin, admiring Saturday’s suitably rockier vibe. ‘… other than Enter Shikari!’ Having toured with fellow welsh rockers Lost Prophets on their previous Liberation Transmission Tour, The Blackout now have enough scope to perform without the aiding of other supportive bands. This, however, is to be expected…The Blackout have a certain dominating energy whilst live on stage, something which is seen very rarely in bands now-a-days. They know how to conduct a crowd in turn with writing cracking music, which Gavin is taking no advantage of. ‘When i was sixteen / seventeen there was a pretty good rock music scene in South Wales. We saw a lot of bands who were not huge but very big in Wales and did very well, from Merthyr. It’s that sucky thing where amazing bands just didn’t get that break. And then it just doesn’t go from there…we were lucky.’ So what does the future have in store for our new favourite Welsh rockers? A new album? Tick. A well deserved rest before going back on tour? Tick.…and we thought we were busy! ‘We’ve been out basically from the beginning of February to the end of May, so we decided to take some time off. We’re off now most of September and October then we’re going to start writing for a new album. October November we’ve got a headline tour, trying our best to get back to Australia. ‘ For more info on The Blackout, visit their website www.theblackout.net for all tour dates, downloads and pictures from Leeds and Reading.

Sorry to break it to you geometry lovers, unfortunately a four dimensional analog of a cube ISN’T making an appearance at Sheffield’s Corporation on 16th September…scrap that for one of the UK’s most prosperous progressive metal bands around and you might just be on the right tracks… TesseracT are playing Corp! Progressive, groove, experimental, metal… whatever you want to call these guys, make sure you head down to Sheffield’s infamous rock venue to sample a taste of metal mayhem in mid Septmeber. Acle, Elliot, Jay, Metal (suitably named to match with his face melting guitar solos) and Mos a.k.a. metal heads TesseracT have had a pretty awesome four years since their formation onto the UK hardcore scene in 2007. Having used the internet to its full advantage, TesseracT released their first demo in 2007, winning over support not only in the UK but across Europe’s entirety aswell. With heavy praise from the likes of Scuzz TV naming them ‘seriously badass…’ the quintet stepped their musical ability up a gear by recruiting additional singer Dan Tompkins, not only aiding their overall tone but also adding that deserved punch within the band. ‘We knew from the first twenty second demo that he would be perfect…’ explains bassist Mos Williams on the bands facebook publicity fan page. ‘Everything he writes challenges us, surprises and excites us…’ With a soul aim of creating ‘…music with subtle power and emotion, to avoid genre-specific clichés and tired old tricks…’ (fb quote) TesseracT are famed for their extravert live stage performance with strobes, power stances and ear splitting riffs coming as standard within the bands expanding repertoire. Having appeared on festival bills since their formation, to include Bloodstock, Hammerfest and this year’s Sonisphere Festival, TesseracT are currently on their full European, and North American World Tour, seeing them play a staggering fifty plus shows. ..no excuse to miss out them ey?! Having started their explosive tour in early August, the band will grace stages across Orlando, Detroit, Philadelphia and The Steel City. Touring until late Mid – December not only proves the bands dedication to educating the metal masses of their music, but also proves they are passionate about what they do. ‘Ultimately, if when you listen to it, it moves you emotionally, intellectually and physically, we will have achieved our goal…’ Supporting TesseracT on 16th September at Sheffield’s Corporation is Chimp Spanner a.k.a Paul Antonia Ortiz, Colchester –raised musician, along with Uneven Structure, with the same support also coming from these guys on 15th September at Leeds Cockpit. For more info on TesseracT see their website on www.tesseractband.co.uk or see www.corporation. org.uk for tickets for their show at Corporation on 16th September…see you there!

in a meeting & threatened to drop us... I took him up on it...” - Brendan B Brown. Wheatus’ debut single ‘Teenage Dirtbag’cracked the Top 40 BBC Official Sales Chart for a second time in March of 2011, TEN YEARS after its debut at #2 on the same chart. To say that Wheatus have been through the wringer in the decade between is the original understatement. Lawsuits, lineup changes, interstate art heist investigations (yes, really), betrayals, intellectual property theft, physical violence, post traumatic front man Brendan B Brown could write a book. To date their first record has sold more than 5 million copies world wide. Any manager or record label would be happy to tout those stats to the press but Wheatus have remained unsigned & unmanaged for the last 8 years. Unlike many of their peers from the early oughts, Wheatus continue to write, record, and tour 15 years after their inception, having taken control of their revenue stream with the home made, “pick-your-price” download system fans can use at Wheatus.com. They have released 5 studio albums since 2000 and are currently in preproduction for album 6. Brendan addresses the radio silence they endured from 2002-2004 mysteriously, “... we were advised to lay low.” With a new line-up, Wheatus hit the road mid decade

throughout the US and UK, including the sold out UK ‘Get Happy Tour’, and their own independent University and College Tours, which once again put the band on stage in front of tens of thousands of fans, who sing along... loudly. Wheatus are currently in the midst of recording and releasing Volumes 1-8 of ‘Pop, Songs & Death’, a series of EPs available exclusively from Wheatus. com as multi-format “pay-what-you-want” DRM Free downloads. ‘Pop, Songs & Death Vol 1’, ‘The Lightning EP’, is the first record to ever be released in the revolutionary new downloadable DSD format for Playstation 3. ‘Pop, Songs & Death Vol 1’ & ‘2’ have had hundreds of thousands of downloads, accompanied by generous donations. Two songs from ‘Vol.1’ were prominently featured in’April Showers’, an independent film depicting the events of the Columbine Massacre, directed by one of the surviving Columbine students, Andrew Robinson. ‘Pop, Songs & Death Vol. 2’, ‘The Jupiter EP’ was released in 2011, and will accompany ‘The Lightning EP’ as a double gatefold vinyl 12” release in the summer of 2011 Building 21, Elsecar Heritage Centre Friday 16th September Tickets £11 (plus booking fee) £13 on the door Box office: The Civic, 01226 327000 See tickets 01159 129000 Elsecar Heritage 01226 740 203

MANOR HOUSE PARK

by Clint Walker

This week, I’ve been on the family holiday to Devon; last year Morocco, this year the South-West of England. Do you know what, I’ve enjoyed it far more too! I even got the chance to go fishing for a few hours out of Plymouth aboard a boat run by Fish ‘n’ Trips (www.fishntrips. co.uk). Aimed squarely at the tourist angler, a four hour trip is available for just £25 each, tackle provided and offering the chance of mackerel, pouting, whiting, gurnard, codling and sardines, it really is a great way to get the family fishing. I went with my step son, 13 year old Joe, and the lovely wife; it was Joe’s first time angling, and under the expert advice of skipper Carl, he caught steadily throughout the afternoon and was pleased to be able to take his catch home for tea! Funnily enough, I was the one who had to clean and gut the fish......and cook it! If you are down that way, check them out. Simon Pomeroy, MD at Pallatrax, (www.pallatrax.co.uk) an innovative company who back my fishing, invited us over for a few drinks and a meal whilst we in Devon. Although I’ve spoken to Simon repeatedly on the telephone, it was the first time we had met and I had chance to look around the operation to find out more about what goes into the excellent baits I’ve been using this year. The Pallatrax philosophy is to keep things natural, with the fewest amounts of artificial additives and preservatives as possible to ensure that fish attractors are not masked by anything else. Pallatrax also produce the Stonze weights to really give you an edge! Anyway; back to the meeting. I was extremely pleased to be offered the role of PR Officer for the company, encompassing Facebook, Twitter, the website and a whole host of other things to promote Pallatrax. It will certainly be a big step up for me to work so closely with a respected angling manufacturer, but although I realise I have a lot to learn, I’m really looking forward to the challenge. Check out Pallatrax on Facebook and on Twitter, LIKE us and see what Pallatrax can do for you! The weather is definitely on the change; it’s raining here and I’d guess it has been where you are. It won’t be long before things start to slow down and mornings are filled with mist and fog as autumn begins to make itself felt. Many anglers will put away the rods and retire for the season, but will you be one of them? Some of the best fishing of the year is just around the corner, big carp piling on pounds in preparation for winter, golden chub and barbel feeding hard in the rivers and plenty of fat roach to go at on commercial fisheries and elsewhere. I’m looking forward to a change from sitting behind my alarms and breaking out the finer tackle, so I hope you are too! Let me know what you catch so you can feature in Angler’s Corner.

Millers and Rovers News & Reviews 2011/12

MILLERS NEWS 2011/12 MILLERS FIRST DEFEAT MATCH REPORT www.themillers.co.uk Rotherham United slipped to their first league defeat of the season after losing 3-2 at Swindon Town, despite twice leading at the County Ground. Alex Revell opened the scoring on his debut, before again giving the Millers the lead after the Robins levelled. Danny Schofield saw red with the Millers leading 2-1, and the Robins made their one-man advantage count as they turned the game on its head with two goals from substitute Alan Connell. Andy Scott made two changes to the side that beat Gillingham 3-0 last weekend. Revell was handed a debut against his former club, with Chris Holroyd dropping out. Mark Bradley, who impressed as a substitute last weekend, replaced Jason Taylor. The Millers were dealt a blow in the opening minutes when Conrad Logan took an accidental blow to the face from Michael Raynes, but luckily he was patched up in time to continue the game. On seven minutes a free kick by Schofield sailed past the flailing Mattia Lanzano but Raynes, coming in at the back post, fired over the bar when stretching. On 10 minutes Logan was tested for the first time when Mehdi Kerrouche danced his way into the area but his fierce drive was beaten away. The game was a scrappy affair with neither side really stamping their authority on proceedings, but on 21 minutes the Millers grasped the initiative. A long free-kick into the area by Tom Newey was only partially cleared by Lukas Magera, Ryan Cresswell headed it back in and Revell, on debut, directed a perfect header beyond Lanzano. Three minutes later Gareth Evans tried a snap-shot from 22 yards which flashed past Lanzano’s far post. Swindon responded with a chance of their own when Paul Caddis’

37

cross found Magera, but he planted his header straight at Logan from eight yards. Then on the half hour mark Matt Ritchie drilled in a low shot which was parried behind by Logan. After it seemed that the Millers had weathered the storm they conceded on 39 minutes. A corner by Kerrouche deep to the back post was met by Ritchie, and his scuffed effort was diverted beyond Logan by the boot of the unfortunate Tom Newey. Swindon missed a golden opportunity to take the lead on 55 minutes.Raffaele De Vita beat Marcus Marshall down Swindon’s left and drilled a low cross to the far post, but an unmarked Ritchie was unable to make contact. The Robins came even closer just after the hour, as Magera turned well and unleashed a half volley from 22 yards, which forced Logan into a fingertip save onto his post and to safety. The Millers were riding their luck, but retook the lead on 64 minutes from a set piece.Marshall won a free kick on the right wing, which Schofield delivered to Revell at the far post, who guided his header into the top corner. Swindon attacked straight from the kick off, and Ritchie stung Logan’s fingertips from 20 yards. The Millers’ task wasn’t helped on 68 minutes when Schofield was dismissed for a second bookable offence. They defended the resulting free kick at the expense of a corner, which Alan Connell, with his first touch after being introduced as a substitute, headed home at the far post. The Robins looked dangerous from set pieces, and on 71 minutes Alberto Comazzi’s header from Kerrouche’s corner flew inches wide. With eight minutes to go the home side took the lead, and again it was Connell with a header at the far post. The substitute found space between Dale Tonge and Raynes to head home Ritchie’s cross from the right. With five minutes to go it was 10 versus 10, as Comazzi was harshly dismissed after receiving a second yellow card, but the Millers were unable to capitalise.

ROVERS NEWS 2011/12 ROVERS POINT AGAINST BRISTOL MATCH REPORT www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk

The Rovers named the same line-up that started against Leeds United last Tuesday. They defended the North Stand end in the first half. The Rovers kicked off and won a free kick on their left in the third minute. The ball was cleared out of the City defence to Maynard inside his own half but with a clear run on goal. Gillett chased him down to the edge of the Rovers penalty area and under his challenge Maynard fired wide. Thre game over the next fifteen minutes or so was quite sterile and scrappy. Then the next fifteen minutes or so was punctuated by a number of corner kicks, four to the Rovers and one to Bristol City. From a Rovers corner in the 24th minute Naylor, running in, headed over the bar. Five minutes later the corner to the visitors caused problems in the home defence after Woods failed to punch the ball away but eventually it was cleared. Then. just past the hour, a short corner to Barnes was played to Oster but his shot for the far bottom corner was cleared off the line by Spence. The match was meandering slowly to the break until it sprung into life in the last three minutes. Dumbuya had a go from 20yards that James only saved at the second attempt. Adomah at the other end fired wide from a similar distance and Hayter had a fierce drive from 25yards spectacularly saved by James diving to his right. In the 45th minute an attack down the Bristol right looked like going the way of all the others but Spurr slipped and ADOMAH, taking full advantage, fired from a tight angle across the keeper and into the far corner of the net. Two minutes of added time brought nothing further and the Rovers went in a goal behind. Both sides made a change in defence at the start of the second half but the desultory play went on. Ten minutes in and Friend even tried a shot from 40 yards that James caught comfortably. A minute later, however and Bennett broke into the penalty area only to be brought down by Kilkenny. Penalty said the referee and Hayter stepped up to take it. He hit the ball straight at James, it rebounded off his chest but Hayter’s follow up shot was blocked and cleared. Lalkovic was then introduced into the game just past the hour and his first touch of the ball took him to the left touchline where he hit a low ball to the near post for Barnes. The ball was defended at the expense of a corner. Then in the 68th minute, a corner to the Rovers was swung in from the right by Barnes to the far post where HAYTER in for the equalising goal. The game suddenly sprang into life and so did the crowd. Good play by Gillett gave Barnes a shot at goal but James saved. In the 71st minute O’Connor threaded a ball through for Lalkovic to cut in from the right but he

blazed high and wide past the far post. Ten minutes later and Oster fed Hayter, who knocked it down for Barnes but he fired high and wide. Then Gillett gave to Hayter in the box, a neat backheel to Lalkovic to the left of goal but he fired into the side net. In the 89th minute a throw in on the Rovers left to Bennett brought a terrific shot that James, diving to his left, just managed to push out for a corner. Then Dumbuya, on a good run forward from the back fired over from 25yards. In added time Oster fed Gillett in the penalty area to the right of goal. His shot to the near post was pushed out by James for a corner, which was headed over the bar by Reece Brown. The final whistle went on a game that was late springing to life but at least the Rovers rescued a point that could well have been three but for a good display from David James, the former England goalkeeper.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2011/12 OWLS HIT BACK AT THE VALLEY MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk

Wednesday picked up their first point out of base in the new season as substitute Clinton Morrison’s header just before the hour cancelled out an early goal from Charlton hitman Bradley Wright-Phillips. And the equaliser was well deserved after a spirited second half performance from the Owls, who were forced into changes at The Valley. With ex-Addicks keeper Nicky Weaver sidelined, Richard O’Donnell stepped into the breach, as did Mark Reynolds at left back in the absence of Julian Bennett. Last term’s Valley Player of the Year Jose Semedo was back on his old stamping ground, while new Owls signing Ryan Lowe had to be content with a place on the bench. And it was not to be his night as the former Bury man limped out of the action just after half time having been introduced midway through the opening period. For Wright-Phillips, though, it took just three minutes to make a mark. The Addicks’ talisman picked up possession outside the box and cut inside before unleashing a vicious drive that nestled into the bottom corner to give the hosts an early lead. The same player found space in the box ten minutes later only to head Johnnie Jackson’s header over the bar but the Londoners had settled into the game in the ascendancy. Dale Stephens could and should have doubled the lead on 18 minutes but the midfielder blasted over from 12 yards

with the goal at his mercy. With Wednesday struggling to make an impression, Gary Megson shuffled his pack midway through the first half - Lowe entering the fray in place of Chris Sedgwick. The tactical switch steadied the ship and Wednesday began to look more cohesive. While there was little in terms of chances, the base was more solid, which offered greater optimism to the travelling faithful ahead of the second period. But shortly after half time, the Owls were dealt a blow when Lowe withdrew when he fell awkwardly moments after the resumption. However, the optimism returned on 57 minutes when Lowe’s replacement Morrison snatched an equaliser. Chris Lines fizzed a corner into the danger zone that was flicked on by Charlton skipper Jackson right into the path of Morrison, who headed home from close range. That strike took the sting out of Char-

lton’s offensive play and Wednesday enjoyed their share of possession in the closing stages. Neither keeper was troubled as the clock ticked down but following their blistering start, Charlton will have been disappointed having not put the Owls away, while Megson’s men took heart from their maiden away point and improved second half display. Charlton: Hamer, Jackson, Morrison, Taylor, Stephens, Hayes (Euell 79), Wright-Phillips, Wagstaff, Wiggins, Solly, Hollands Unused substitutes: Sullivan, Hughes, Pritchard, Cort Owls: O’Donnell, Buxton, Batth, Jones, Reynolds, Sedgwick (Lowe 23) (Morrison 53), Prutton, Semedo (O’Connor 74), Lines, Marshall, Madine Unused substitutes: Jameson, Kasnik

MEGSON HAILS SECOND HALF PERFORMANCE GAFFERʼS REACTION www.swfc.co.uk

Wednesday boss Gary Megson praised his side’s second half fight back which saw the Owls gain a point at The Valley. An early Bradley Wright-Phillips strike put the hosts in front but Wednesday were much-improved after the break and substitute Clinton Morrison drew the Owls level just before the hour. Megson said: “While we havent played any champagne football, we’ve played with a lot more heart, a lot more desire and a lot more running in the second half. “If we would have started the game like that, arguably we could have gone on and won it. “You can’t come to a team who are up near the top of the league and give them a goal in the opening few minutes. “We defended a lot better after the break and consequently caused them problems at the other end.” Morrison replaced debutant Ryan Lowe in the second half and took less than three minutes to make his mark with a headed goal from Chris Lines’ corner. Megson added: “Clinton came on and he did well. He’s got himself on the scoresheet and that’s what his game is all about and his celebration showed how much that goal meant to him.”

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2011/12 THE BLADES REMAIN UNBEATEN MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

The emphatic scoreline is justified as the Blades were impressive in continuing the unbeaten start to the campaign. Bury were outclassed in every area as Chris Porter, Nathaniel MendezLaing, Matt Lowton and Erik Tonne netted for United. The starting XI showed two changes from the previous weekend’s success over Yeovil - McAllister replaced the injured Montgomery and MendezLaing was preferred to Flynn, who dropped to the bench, where he was joined by the fit-again Williamson. Doyle kept the captain’s armband after skippering the side in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy victory over Burton Albion. Wilson continued with a 4-4-2 formation. The back five, who have started the season so well, were reunited after members were rested in midweek, whilst McAllister partnered Doyle in the middle of midfield. Quinn and Mendez-Laing

occupied wide roles, supporting the front two of Porter and Cresswell. Without clearly taking control, all the efforts early on were at the net of Bury goalkeeper, Belford. Collins twice went close with headers, whilst Porter fizzed wide with his left foot. Doyle also failed to hit the target with a long-ranger and MendezLaing saw his shot saved after robbing Skarz. As the half progressed United’s chances continued and Bury were struggling to keep the Blades out of their half. Eastham was the first to be booked, for stopping McAllister’s bursting run with a crude challenge, and from the resulting free-kick Quinn’s 25-yard curler was tipped over the top corner by Belford. McAllister was wide with a first-time half-volley from the edge of the penalty area after good passes from Collins and Jean-Francois, whilst Bury recorded their first efforts around the half-hour mark. Coke fired over and wide with two separate efforts from outside the box and Picken fired straight at Simonsen on 36 minutes but just before the break the visitors finally conceded. The tidy move began with a neat Cresswell flick and then Quinn’s crossfield pass, which picked out Mendez-Laing. The loan winger cut inside before shooting at Belford, who parried back into the danger

area and both Quinn and PORTER had efforts blocked before the latter finally stabbed home from closerange. There was still time for an effort each before the break. Quinn’s freekick was punched away by Belford and at the other end a long-range Jones shot was wide. Bury conceded two minutes before the interval and then two minutes after with United’s first attack of the second half. Doyle found MENDEZLAING, whose near post cross found the target, possibly with aid of the fists of goalkeeper Belford. The Blades went close to adding to the two goals when Quinn’s freekick caused a bit of a scramble in the six-yard box and then Cresswell fired over after cutting in from the right. Bury’s first effort of the second period was a weak Coke effort on 57 minutes, which was comfortably dealt with by Simonsen but United were quickly back on the attack and Quinn was again seeing a lot of the ball. However, it was another Irish midfielder who was involved in the third goal. Doyle powered past Sweeney in the middle of the park and threaded a pass through for Porter, who saw his shot parried by Belford but LOWTON followed up to slot the ball into the empty net at the Kop end.

Y A D I FIRGHT CLUB

Boss Wilson used the cushion to introduce Flynn and Tonne for scorers Mendez-Laing and Porter respectively, whilst Bury went close with Jones curling a free-kick on to the top of the net. Quinn was afforded a standing ovation when he was replaced by Williamson in the final ten minutes and United continued to pour forward. Eastham prevented Cresswell adding his name to the scoresheet but a fourth was just around the corner. On 84 minutes, Williamson delivered a corner from the right and when Bury failed to clear with Belford out of position, TONNE casually hooked into the corner of the net with the outside of his left foot. There were further chances for the Blades to score in the remaining moments as the Kop sang and the final whistle was greeted a rapturous applause from three sides of Bramall Lane. Blades: Simonsen, Lowton, JeanFrancois, Mendez-Laing (Flynn 73), Doyle, Collins, Cresswell, Maguire, McAllister, Porter (Tonne 81), Quinn (Williamson 83). Unused: Long, Parrino.
