NEW AMPHITHEATRE SET TO OPEN Sheffield’s new amphitheatre which wouldn’t look out of place in ancient Rome or Greece, is set to open for the first time later this month - with a grand parade planned to mark the occasion. Saturday 17th September will see the formal opening of the new South St Park, which nestles on the green slopes behind Sheffield Station. A special parade of musicians, performers and local people will mark its official opening, beginning in Hallam Square at 12.00 noon that day. The parade will pass through the station before

finishing with a formal opening ceremony at the amphitheatre itself, led by Sheffield City Council Leader, Cllr Julie Dore. This will be followed by a packed programme of music, dance and theatre events until 4pm that day. Stalls, refreshments and other attractions will also be in the new event space throughout the afternoon. Other attractions include chainsaw sculpture demonstrations and the animals of Heeley City Farm. This marks the first phase of the park’s completion, which includes an amphitheatre for outdoor events and play, new

paths and lighting to the station and tram and the UK’s ﬁrst city centre ‘arboretum’, or living tree collection. Cllr Dore said: “This is a great addition to Shefﬁeld’s wonderful collection of parks and another city centre space which we hope can be used by Tramlines and other events. It is also a great place to come and just enjoy one of the best views over the city and right out to the edge of the Peak District.” More than 100 trees of 18 different species - the result of a grant from South Yorkshire Forest Partnership and individual

Eventually it is intended that the Sheaf Valley Park of which South St is a part, will stretch from Victoria Quays through the middle of Park Square roundabout to Norfolk Park, in front of Park Hill ﬂats - currently being renovated by developers Urban Splash - joining ﬁve separate green spaces. Local residents and members of the Friends of Sheaf Valley Park Group have been instrumental in the planning of the park. The project was

This week, we remember the terrible atrocity of the terrorist attack on the twin towers and as has happened before, at times of national interest, I am pleased to report that there has not been one text sent to my phone that was in the worst possible taste. It was appropriate in this week of remembrance that ITV showed a compelling documentary telling the fantastic job performed by twenty three crack navy seals who flew undercover into Pakistan and raided the fortress home of the world’s most wanted man, Osama Bin Laden. The sheer professionalism of this difficult expedition was breath-taking. I am not normally a person who rejoices in the death of a fellow human being, but on this occasion, the moment that the bullets were fired that took out this odious man, who was responsible for the deaths of so many innocent people, actually filled me with great joy. I would imagine that news of this documentary of what happened last May, will have really loosened the bowels of Colonel Ghadaffi. I am a great believer in karma, and certainly the expression of ‘what goes around comes around’ is very true. The world is a better place without Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, his right hand man, ‘chemical Sam’ and all the other disgusting despots and I shall be over the moon when the Libyan rebels add Ghadaffi to the list. Paddy Doherty emerged as the winner of Celebrity Big Brother, defying odds of thirty three to one. I have received an invitation to celebrate this in London from my close pal who has coached Paddy in the noble art of bare knuckle fighting since he was twelve. The show evidenced that this extremely hard man had a really nice softer side to his personality and was much admired and respected by his fellow housemates. Any person who can stand spending two weeks with Jedward has got

to have special qualities. Kerry Katona was endearing with regard to her honesty and deep regret for her past and joined the show to show her children that she has changed for the better and that they now have a mum to be proud of. The next nine weeks will answer the question of whether we want another session of noncelebrity Big Brother, and at first sight it looks a winner. This has much to do with the guest appearance of the gorgeous Pamela Anderson and the fact that there are two or three really attractive young women in the show. My bet is that we will see a bit of nookie in this series, and congratulations to channel five for giving this ailing show the kiss of life. X-Factor is compulsive viewing for me, if only to see my close friend Sunny Daye receiving four yesses sending her to boot camp for the second time. Sunny is a tremendous artiste, better than most I have seen on the show, and I will be reporting on what went on once Sunny is free from contractual restraint. I think that I have already seen a possible winner in twenty year old Lascel Wood who performed a faultless rendition of the Kings of Leon hit ‘Use Somebody’ We are rich in bands in Dronfield, even after the sad loss of Junkyard Dog, with the Score, the six25’s and a band that I went to go and have a look at on Thursday, the Canyon. This band with Tom Hudson on drums, the very experienced John Swift on bass, Dave Gough on lead and the wonderful vocals of Ann Fotheringham were exceptional and are well worth booking. The many hours of rehearsals have really paid off, and they were well received by a good crowd in the White Swan in Dronfield, which is a really well run establishment. Russ Dennett is holding a Russ and Friends night this Saturday at Hilltop Sports and Social Club which is guaranteed to be a great evening’s entertainment with the maestro of the guitar.

Just give it a urine sample and the computer will tell you what’s wrong, and what to do about it. It takes ten seconds and only costs five quid.....a lot quicker and better than a doctor and you get Club card points”. So Jack collects a urine sample in a small jar and takes it to Tesco. He deposits five pounds and the computer lights up and asks for the urine sample. He pours the sample into the slot and waits. Ten seconds later, the computer ejects a printout: “You have tennis elbow. Soak your arm in warm water and avoid heavy activity. It will improve in two weeks”. That evening while thinking how amazing this new technology was, Jack began wondering if the computer could be fooled. He mixed some tap water, a stool sample from his dog, urine samples from his wife and daughter and the cat, and masturbated into the mixture for good measure. Jack hurried back to Tesco, eager to check what would happen. He deposited five pounds, poured in his concoction, and awaited the results. The computer whirred for a little longer than he expected then printed the following: 1) Your tap water is too hard. Get a water softener. 2) Your cat’s having kittens. Get a vet 3) Your dog has ringworm. Bathe him with antifungal shampoo. 4) Your daughter has a cocaine habit. Get her into rehab. 5) Your wife is pregnant with twins; they aren’t yours. Get a lawyer. ... 6) And if you don’t stop playing with yourself, your elbow will never get better...Thank you for shopping at Tesco.

Big Brother is back and this year, the move to Channel 5 has done nothing but good things for the show as the fourteen housemates don’t appear to be outrageous stereotypes with egos the size of Katie Price’s lady pillows... in fact they all seem to be fairly reasonable people, which is a good shift from Channel 4’s decision to stuff the house with the most extreme weirdos the UK has ever spawned. An experiment in human behaviour was twisted beyond all recognition with idiots, morons, sluts, and wannabees – and the last few seasons were little more than car crash TV. Seeing someone shove a wine bottle where the sun don’t shine might be fun for some, but most people simply couldn’t relate to those kinds of people, and viewing figures plummeted. Channel 5 had the foresight to take the show back to its roots - and the new format is working; the new housemates may be very young, but they seem to be relatively normal, which is more than can be said for Pamela Anderson. There to provide ‘tasks’, seeing the A List celebrity mingling with what are, essentially, nobodies provides much mirth. She’s never been the best actor, and her gurning as she attempts to hide her distaste at being surrounded by the ‘dirty commoners’ is hysterical. Watch out, Pammie, too much contact and, like every winner of X Factor, your career’ll go down the toilet faster than a rollup at a school disco. With rejuvenated viewing figures, it seems this series of Big Brother has been a success. I can at least watch this year without wanting to stab knitting needles into my eyes, so that’s clearly something! Game of the Month: Zombie Island Zombie Island is a first person shooter with levelling up, role playing elements. It’s a brilliant, but flawed, action adventure across an island teeming with hordes of monstrous zombies, and along the way you have many tasks to perform from locating survivors to obtaining ever more powerful weapons with which to destroy the enemy. You never feel quite safe as a bloodthirsty mob of the undead can come crashing out at you at any moment, and that’s the beauty of the game. Dead Island is one part Dead Rising, another part Resident Evil 4, and a juicy scattering of horror. It’s a fantastic game and if you pick up any title in September, this is the one to get you through the darkening autumn nights. Score: 8.5 / 10. It’s got a decent story, some great action (although combat might be frustrating at times), Dead Island is much greater than the sum of its parts. It’s a genuinely thrilling horror game and a must-have for any zombie fan.

WEEK Forty pharmacies across Shefﬁeld are warning that ‘Ignorance isn’t always bliss’ as they urge everyone to get their free blood pressure check during this year’s Know your Numbers! Week (1218 September). Over 1,500 ofﬁcial ‘Pressure Stations’ taking part in the nation’s biggest blood pressure testing event run by UK charity the Blood Pressure Association. A shocking 1 in 3 adults has high blood pressure and a third of them have no idea as it has no symptoms. That’s around 5 million people whose lives are actually at risk because they don’t know their numbers. Research from the Blood Pressure Association has revealed that almost three quarters of adults do not know their own blood pressure numbers. High blood

pressure nearly always has no symptoms and for many people is ‘out of sight and out of mind’, but its effects can be devastating. It’s the UK’s biggest silent killer, being responsible for 60% of strokes and 40% of heart attacks. If it is detected though, it can be successfully managed. Gary Birtles and Lorrie Brown, who are the Sheffield based producers of the show, have been touring the country for the last 2 yrs and are performing at several venues in Rotherham and Sheffield in November around Remembrance Day. Just a couple of months ago in June they performed their show at the Peace Gardens on Armed Forces and Veterans Day. ‘It was a great honour to perform the show in Sheffield and to be alongside many of the heroes from our region who were there to mark the day. Lorrie has been performing a tribute to Dame Vera Lynn for 15 yrs and has played in many different venues. Lorrie says, ‘The 2 memories that really stand out, are performing on the pitch at half time during a game between West Ham and Everton on Remembrance Sunday. Making it easier for them to put on entertainment may therefore provide an important source of new income to struggling businesses such as pubs, restaurants and hotels. “So this is a golden opportunity to deregulate, reduce bureaucratic burdens, cut costs, give the big society a boost and give free speech a helping hand as well. Our proposals are, simply, to remove the need for a licence from as many types of entertainment as possible.

“As long as you have proper controls on alcohol and spectator safety, the rest is mostly bonkers red tape, and it’s time we consigned it to the bin.” Feargal Sharkey, chief executive of UK Music, the umbrella body for the music industry, added: “We are delighted that Government has adopted such a forward-thinking approach. “Enabling live music to ﬂourish has potential to drive social cohesion, entrepreneurialism and economic growth. PREVIEW: RISE TO REMAIN by KT Evans

With a UK headline tour, countless festival appearances and front cover spreads in rock music magazines across an international scale, London based Rise To Remain are rapidly hyping up metal fans from around the world. Ready and waiting to seize venues across the UK and thrust them into a frenzy of metalcore mosh-outs, we spoke to lead vocalist Austin Dickenson about the prospect of their first ever headline tour and what it’s like to front one of the most talked about metal bands on the scene. Bringing their fierce live show to Sheffield’s O2 Academy on Monday 19th September, after a cracking slot at Sonsiphere Festival 2011, Rise To remain should come with a warning sign round their necks. A rarity for Austin to mount the scaffolding around the stage and hang on for his life it really is not, something which will no doubt be replicated on the bands current tour. ‘We’re certainly looking forward to playing up North,’ reveals Austin, who has so far smashed up stages in Bristol, Oxford and Brighton to name just a few. ‘We’re so excited!’ And rightly so. Having formed in 2006, Rise To Remain have gone from bedroom gigs to massive stages at festivals across the globe in a matter of years. Their debut album ‘City Of Vultures,’ recently released on 2nd September 2011has seen the group thrust into a world of rock media attention, gracing the front cover of rock fans bible ‘Kerrang!’ along with interviews on ScuzzTV , Total Rock and Metal Hammer. In 2010, the band also received Kerrang’s award for Best British Newcomer, no doubt successfully raising awareness of the Southern Rockers. ‘(City Of Vultures) took the best part of five months to record and about a year to record. Because it is our debut album, we went a little bit mental to get it perfect. But it’s a real reflection of what we’re about…we’re all really really into it.’ Achieving top critical acclaim from Front Magazine who rewarded the album 5/5, tracks such as ‘God Can Bleed’ and ‘We Will Last Forever’ has won over fans both new and old to get into their adrenaline fuelled metalcore music. ‘It’s been received excellently, we were all really surprised…you love music you create.’ Although connoisseurs of writing and producing music within the specific metalcore genre, Austin explains that ‘it’s really important to keep (the music you listen to at the moment) varied…metalcore, dub step, standard Dr Dray. INTERVIEW: COURAGE HAVE COURAGE by KT Evans

For a band to be given the honour of playing in front of thousands of people at one of the UK’s largest music festivals is, let’s be honest, pretty huge. Combine this in with the fact that the band in question, Courage Have Courage are still establishing themselves within their own city let alone the UK and the result equates to one hell of a potential performance. Taking to the BBC Introducing Stage at both Reading and Leeds Festival 2011, Courage Have courage from Guernsey have sure as hell hit the jackpot this summer, bringing their rock / pop set to the festival masses. ‘We’re all born in New Guernsey and have lived there all our lives,’ explains lead vocalist Luke Vidamour. ‘We started writing last year as a new band; this is our 8th or 9th show. We’ve only played at home twice…it’s unreal, so out of the blue!’ Although the standard British weather (rain…in England…never) hit Leeds this year, it didn’t seem to damped the band’s spirit and overall performance. ‘Our music’s fun and entertaining and we were going out in miserably weather so we’re starting off a bit bad, but I think everyone got into it and we got a great response.’ Using the online media to their advantage, Courage Have Courage used social media sites to spread word of their sound. ‘We set out online, that’s how we started to gain fans before we did a show. The use of the internet, facebook, kerrang and BBC introducing has really helped.’ In a band? REVIEW: CANNABIS CORPSE by KT Evans First things first…upon reflection of the band’s name you would a) be totally correct in assuming Cannabis Corpse are influenced by the Class C drug Cannabis, and b) you would also be right in your assumption that the ‘Corpse’ refers to the genre of the band i.e. the deadest of death metal. Ok ok so it may not be your thing, but let’s be honest now, everyone secretly loves to rock out to a bit of metal madness once in a while, do they not? Bringing their European/Russian/UK Summer 2011 Tour to Sheffield’s Corporation, the long haired US rockers tried and succeeded in putting on a kick-ass show all metal heads would enjoy head banging too…it really is no secret! Performing in the small room at Sheffield’s Corporation could be a bit of a turn-off for any touring band, especially one from across the pond. Contrary to this however, Cannabis Corpse seemed to relish in the intimacy of the less daunting, less vast room of the second stage, sporadically pausing throughout their hour long set to throw in pro-circle pit banter out to the audience. Opening the show with ‘Chronolith,’ an up-tempo, jolty number from the bands 2008 studio album ‘Tube Of The Resinated,’ the crowd, although light on their numbers, were flung into a frenzy of sweaty mosh-pitting throughout the entire show. Talk about learning something new every day, who would have thought it possible to start a circle pit / wall of death with, at most, five people? No, us neither! With a voice deeper that the deepest shackles of Satan’s hide out, front man Andy Horn commanded the stage with the standard ‘metal God power stance’ whilst never dismissing the need to gage his audience’s response…quote of the night was a

certified ‘you can’t make out at a metal gig’ to the couple necking at the front…just, no. ‘Sentenced to Burn one’ and ‘Mummified in Bong Water’ (now the band name seems kind of normal doesn’t it) followed, which saw Bassist Philip Hall give the best gurner face possibly ever seen in track ‘Reefer Stashed Place’ towards the middle of Cannabis Corpse’s set. Having to holt to tell the neckers to ‘just stop it’ once again, it was evident that the crowd’s energy was rubbing off onto the four guys on stage…head thrashing, bodies ‘hitting the floor’ (thanks Drowning Pool) it was like a sea of long hair and hot bodies…nice! ‘Where the King Lives’ and ‘I will Smoke You’ closed the band’s fierce set, which although was scheduled to go on for another half an hour, seemed slightly cut short of creating the ultimate climax at the end. However, it’s unarguable to say that the quintet put on one hell of a show, allowing us an insight into the trials and tribulations of a Cannabis Corpse. I’m always a little perplexed when it comes to reviewing groundbaits as many appear to be a very similar thing in different packaging and I wouldn’t want to say that they are all the same.......thankfully, a new offering from Starfish Baits(Super Aroma Halibut Mix) immediately strikes me as a well put together product with plenty of the right components to allow the angler to catch fish! I’d not heard of Starfish Baits before being asked to take a look, so I took some of the baits up to Gawsworth Fishery near Congleton. I chose to use the Halibut Mix as I wanted to target the big carp which reside in Wood Pool, and I know they are partial to Halibut pellet; I also know that bream flood into the swim at the merest hint of pellets, so it seemed a good way to get some attraction into the swim without being snowed under by them! I weighed the bag first to ensure I wasn’t being undersold and, as expected, it came in at smack the stated 1kg (give or take a few grammes for packaging) so a good start. Opening the bag, it smelled strongly of halibut (good news!) and was fairly finely ground; - I think there is nothing worse than big lumps or flakes which need to be liquidised out before use. There were one or two larger food items, but nothing which would affect the mixing or subsequent breakdown... Colour is another issue for my confidence when angling and this was a lovely dark ‘nutty’ shade which will blend easily with any other additives without breaking up into a pale area on the lake bed which may spook wary carp. The odd fleck of colour within the bait always adds a little interest for feeding fish, and the Starfish Baits Halibut Mix has just the right amount to generate curiosity without causing any trepidation for hungry carp. Adding water to the bait was easy, by constant and thorough mixing, the liquid is dispersed without ‘clumping’ and consequently leaves a firm mix (obviously depending on the amount of fluid added) which catapults well and can be thrown some distance without coming apart in the air. I tried some in the margins where I could see that breakdown rates are clearly affected by the amount of additional things added by the angler and the amount of water used to mix it initially, but it holds up extremely well when blended with minimum water and doesn’t begin to break down for some minutes.... I spent the day fishing over the groundbait, balled in and using it in PVA mesh as a stick mix (mix it fairly dry, or add vegetable oil and be quick!) and managed to land a few carp to around 10lbs; not huge fish, but at times they were really grubbing up the lake bed to get into it and I’m happy to reckon that had I been on a longer session, it would have formed a big part of my baiting strategy. MILLERS NEWS 2011/12 MILLERS BOUNCE BACK MATCH REPORT www.themillers.co.uk Rotherham United bounced back from defeat at Swindon last weekend with a convincing 3-1 win at home to Dagenham & Redbridge. It was the first time the two sides met since the League Two play-off final in May 2010, and a brace from Lewis Grabban added to Gareth Evans’ opener as the Millers had the game firmly under control by half time. Andy Scott made two changes from the team that lost at Swindon last Saturday. There was a recall for Dale Tonge who replaced the suspended Danny Schofield, whilst Mark Bradley was replaced by Jason Taylor. The Millers made a blistering start to the game and created an opportunity inside 20 seconds. Marcus Marshall, starting on the right wing, crossed to the back post where Alex Revell’s header from a tight angle was blocked by Chris Lewington. The Millers continued to make the early running creating the next chance on five minutes. A knockdown fell kindly into the path of Grabban who set his sights early with a low shot which flashed just wide of Lewington’s far post. The early pressure was rewarded on eight minutes when the Millers took a deserved lead. Good work on the right by Grabban resulted in a pass to Marshall, his cross was only partially cleared to Evans who drilled in a low shot through Lewington and into the net. Marshall was causing Dagenham all kinds of trouble down the right, and it was his cross again on 12 minutes which found Evans, but on this occasion the winger smashed the ball over the bar. On 21 minutes Dagenham equalised against the run

of play. A corner from Gavin Tomlin was met firmly by the head of captain Scott Doe, and despite the best efforts of Tonge on the line, he couldn’t keep the ball out. The Millers were given a further warning five minutes later when a long ball through the middle caught out Ryan Cresswell, but Tomlin’s shot was smothered by the onrushing Conrad Logan. Just before the half hour, with the away team having a good spell, it was the Millers who went back in front. Again it was Marshall who crossed from the right and Grabban, in oceans of room, just glanced the ball beyond Lewington. The Millers were now fully in control of proceedings and took advantage of their supremacy by adding a third on 37 minutes. Great battling work by Evans down the right resulted in a pull-back from the by-line to Grabban, who turned on a sixpence and slammed the ball past a stranded Lewington. The Millers began the second half in the same rampant fashion, and within three minutes Tonge clipped Lewington’s crossbar from 20 yards, after Revell found him on the right. On 54 minutes the Daggers enjoyed a half-chance to get back into the match, but Sam Williams skewed his half-volley wide from 16 yards. The visitors came closer on the hour mark when skipper Cresswell struggled to deal with a long ball forward, which allowed Oliver Lee to fire a thunderous volley against Logan’s crossbar. The Daggers continued to press but never really tested Logan in the Rotherham goal. The next effort of note, on 77 minutes, was a free kick from 25 yards from which Grabban, in search of a hat trick, stung the palms of Lewington.

ROVERS NEWS 2011/12 ROVERS SUNK TO BOTTOM IN WALES MATCH REPORT www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk

Play resumed after the international break and the Rovers faced a tough hurdle at the Cardiff City Stadium for their first game back. They made two changes from the starting line-up against Bristol City, with James O’Connor replacing Sam Hird and James Coppinger returning after injury for Giles Barnes. The home team got the game underway and caused problems in the Rovers defence in the first couple of minutes. Firstly, Woods spilled a low cross from the home left, with Earnshaw getting to the ball and from 8yards hitting the post and being put out for a corner. Then a long ball from the Cardiff half meant for Earnshaw was met with a timely interception by the long leg of Friend at the expense of a corner. The Rovers hit back in the 5th minute with a good build-up down their right by Dumbuya and Coppinger with the former putting in a good cross but Marshall made the catch. Five minutes later and Bennett got away down the Rovers left but his low cross went begging. Then Coppinger and Bennett combined in the Cardiff half to give Bennett a crack at goal from 25yards that Marshall, diving to his right, pushed away for a corner. Midfield play ensued before Miller, in the 19th minute, got on the end of a cross from the right and fired over fro 12yards. Dumbuya was the next to have a go in the 25th minute but put over the bar from 25yards on the Rovers right. A corner to the home team then came to nothing. In the 34th minute, a long clearance by Woods was allowed to bounce by the Cardiff defence. Hayter was first to it and hit a left foot volley goalwards but a surprised Marshall made the save at the near post. Whilst Cardiff’s build-up going forward was quite impressive the Rovers defence was equal to the task of denying them a sight of goal. The Rovers competed well in midfield but were not getting a good run at goal so that they were relying on shooting from outside the penalty area. However, an interesting and fairly equal contest was brought to a close with the referee’s whistle for half time. The Rovers made a substitution at the start of the second half, Milan Lalkovic replacing Naylor. Once again the Rovers, having kicked off, found themselves under pressure in the first minute when Earnshaw got the better of O’Connor but had been pushed out to the left byline from where his shot had took a slight deflection for a corner. Gerrard then headed the corner straight into Woods’ arms. The Rovers then got in a good attack but their efforts to get a shot on target were blocked by a massed defence. Then, in the 52nd minute came the first goal, to Cardiff City. Winning a free kick on their right touchline halfway in the Rovers half, the ball was placed into the middle where the onrushing GERRARD met it with a clean header into the back of the net. The Rovers responded and pinned the home team in their own half for a spell but again there was no clear sight of goal and their efforts were blocked. The home team then began to take a better grip on the game so that it was no surprise when they added to their score in the 75th minute. Persistence by Miller near the right corner flag won

him the ball from Friend and his prod into the middle found EARNSHAW on his own to tap past the exposed keeper. The Rovers had a chance to clear the ball but failed to do so and paid the penalty. Minutes later and Gunnarsson fired well over from just outside of the penalty area. In the 87th minute some skilful footwork by Friend set up Coppinger for a shot from 25yards but he fired over the bar. Two minutes later and from a free kick on the edge of the penalty area in a central position Barnes put over. Into added time and McNaughton went down the home right and hit a low ball across the face of goal for Whittingham at the far post but his effort was saved well by Woods at the post. The last action of the game came when Cowie crossed from the right and Gestede only had to head past the keeper but Woods got down to the ball and collected at the second attempt. The Rovers had given a good account of themselves in the first half but had lost an early goal in the second half and found themselves up against it.

Two Gary Madine goals in ten second half minutes and a late Liam Palmer strike saw Wednesday maintain their 100 per cent S6 start to the new campaign. The in-form Madine proved the difference as the striker’s tally for the term went to five and the Owls rose to eighth in the League 1 table. Angelo Balanta was on the scoresheet for MK, but it was not enough to prevent their first defeat of the campaign. With Jermaine Johnson returning from a knee injury, Wednesday could utilise the winger’s trademark pace and trickery, both of which were in evidence in the early exchanges. On the other flank, Ben Marshall looked lively and his first cross of the contest saw the onrushing Clinton Morrison a whisker away from close range contact. For their part, MK Dons played some nice football without creating anything tangible as the opening period unfolded. The same could be said of the Owls, though, who forced a string of corners towards the break but failed to really trouble the Dons’ defence. MK goalkeeper David Martin was called into action moments before half time when he had to stretch to divert Julian Bennett’s looped effort over the bar and Lewis Buxton went close from the resulting corner. But by and large, Martin and counterpart Richard O’Donnell were

spectators through an uneventful first half. Johnson failed to appear for the second 45 and Palmer came on his place. The visitors came out with more purpose - O’Donnell dived low to keep out a low drive from Jabo Ibehre - but Wednesday promptly stemmed the danger by taking the lead on 54 minutes. Morrison did well in the area to turn and find Madine, who slotted home past the despairing Martin. And ten minutes later, Madine made it two. Palmer drilled a vicious cross right into the mix and Madine climbed high to power an unstoppable header into the back of the net. Wednesday continued to dominate, with MK offering little in attack - until substitute Balanta jinked his way through the Owls’ backline on 77 minutes to hand the visitors a lifeline. And two minutes later, they came close to completing a comeback but O’Donnell came to the Owls’ rescue with a wonderful flying save from a crisp Dean Bowditch drive. And that proved a key moment in the game, which was duly underlined when Palmer side-footed in Madine’s feed on 89 minutes to finally put the points out of reach. To round off a miserable afternoon for MK, Ibehre saw red in the final minute for a second bookable offence. Gary Megson hailed two-goal striker Gary Madine following the Owls’ 3-1 win over MK Dons on Saturday. Madine took his tally to five goals for the season and Megson praised the all-round improvement in the former Carlisle man’s game. He said: “I thought Gary was terrific. He will be judged on goals like all strikers are but it’s his all-round game that is improving all the time. “His running was strong, his movement was intelligent and he scored two goals and made the other one.” Wednesday’s third was struck by substitute Liam Palmer, who claimed his first-ever senior goal and Megson was pleased with the S6 academy product - but only after a shaky start when he replaced Jermaine Johnson at half time. “Liam did really well overall but when he first came on, I wasn’t pleased because he was touching the ball once and moving it on. “He’s one of our best players with the ball so he had to improve and he did. He had a hand in the first goal, sent over a fantastic cross for the second and then scored his first goal.” Megson also quelled any fears that returning winger Johnson suffered a recurrence of the knee injury that kept the Jamaican out of the Owls’ early season programme. He said: “I thought JJ was poor but he had every right to be and I have to take the blame in my eagerness to get him out there on the pitch. “He didn’t track back in his frustration and MK Dons were exploiting the gaps in the middle as a result. “I had a word with him at half time and told him I was taking him off and he was fine. “JJ’s time will come.”

In-form striker Gary Madine has welcomed the increased competition in the S6 ranks as he continues to go from strength to strength for the Owls. The former Carlisle man has bagged five goals in seven league appearances this season, including two during Saturday’s 3-1 home win over MK Dons. And Madine is confident he will keep his shirt moving forward if he maintains his current vein of form. He said: “Ryan Lowe has come in and he is a proven goalscorer, Chris O’Grady did brilliant at Rochdale and Clinton, well everyone knows Clinton and the career he’s had, but if I keep scoring the goals I’m sure I will keep my place. “Dealing with the increased competition shows character I think, the gaffer wants people that want the ball and want to play and I think that is me. “You pick up a lot of things in training; I think Chris O’Grady’s hold-up play is good, Ryan is a great finisher sand obviously Clinton is a great all-around player and has been scoring goals for years.” Madine also had praise for Owls academy product Liam Palmer, who topped another impressive performance with his maiden senior goal against the high-flying Dons. Palmer came on for the second half and played a key role in all three goals as the visitors suffered their first defeat of the campaign. Madine said: “Liam Palmer is an absolutely great player, a massive up and coming talent and has technique coming out of everywhere. “He played a great ball in for me and I repaid the favour by putting him in and he scored.” With the best home record in the division neatly stored, Wednesday face back to back games out of base this week.

Nicky Weaver is expected to be sidelined for three months following consultation with a specialist in Cleveland over the weekend. The Owls goalkeeper ﬂew out to America to see the surgeon in whom he stores great faith given his treatment by the same doctor in the past. Weaver undergoes surgery on Monday of this week. SWFC head physiotherapist Paul Smith said: “Nicky has an ongoing problem with the cartilage in his knee and the only thing he can do now is have surgery. “He hasn’t suffered a knee trauma injury, this is an ongoing situation and the surgery will wash out the knee joint. “We expect him to be out for around three months.” Weaver’s injury has opened the door for Richard O’Donnell, who has stepped into the breach in style so far. The S6 academy product made one superb save in particular during the win over MK Dons on Saturday and boss Gary Megson says he will not be pursuing the option of a loan goalkeeper for ﬁrst team duty. Megson said: “Richard has done very well for us, the save he made on Saturday from the lad Bowditch when it was 2-1 was fantastic. “We have three very good goalkeepers who are very similar so we will be going with Richard and he has to keep playing as well as he has been doing because he will have Arron Jameson breathing down his neck. “I may look at bringing in a senior keeper to make training better but I certainly haven’t got any plans to go out and loan a goalkeeper at the moment. “The news on Nicky is not good but it’s nowhere near as bad as it could have been.”

Danny Wilson refused to be too disappointed after watching his team dominate the second half at Glanford Park, and yet only come away with a point. “We enjoyed all the possession in the second half but it’s hard to say how well we did because they only had ten men. If we just had a little more quality in our ﬁnal pass we would have gone on to win the game.” The point gained against Scunthorpe has moved the Blades to the top of League one, above Charlton Athletic. Blades boss Wilson went on to say “Scunthorpe were as brave as lions and defended very well. Everybody will be delighted if he goes on to score a few goals now.” Looking ahead to the game, Barlow is in no doubt as to size of the challenge facing the Blades in Tuesday’s encounter. He added: “Huddersfield will be very difficult to beat, they have gone 32 league games unbeaten and that says it all really. “They are experienced at this level and will have a confidence that comes with being unbeaten and having been at the top end of table so for last couple of seasons.”
