Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS
A woman goes to the local paper’s office to see that the obituary for her recently deceased husband is published. The obit editor informs her that there is a charge of 50 pence per word. She pauses, reflects, and then she says, “Well then, let it read: ‘Euan Davis died’.” Amused at the woman’s thrift, the editor tells her that there is a seven-word minimum for all obituaries. She thinks it over and in a few seconds says, “In that case, let it read, - ‘Euan Davis died, golf clubs for sale’”. An Irishman an Englishman and a Scot were sitting in a bar in Cardiff. The view was fantastic, the beer excellent, the food exceptional. “Y’ken,” said the Scotsman, “I still prefer the pubs back home. Why in Glasgow there’s a wee bar called McTavish’s. Now,the landlord there goes out of his way for the locals so much that when you buy 4 drinks he will buy the 5th drink for you.” “Well,” said the Englishman, “At my local, the Red Lion, the barman there will buy you your 3rd drink after you buy the first 2.” “Ahhh, that’s nothin,” said the Irishman. “Back home in Dublin, there’s Ryan’s Bar. Now the moment you set foot in the place they’ll buy you a drink, then another, all the drinks you like. Then when you’ve had enough drinks they’ll take you upstairs and see that you get laid. All on the house!” The Englishman and Scotsman immediately pour scorn on the Irishman’s claims. But, the Irishman swears every word is true. “Well,” said the Englishman, “Did this actually happen to you?” “Not me myself, personally, no,” said the Irishman. “But it did happen to me sister.”

It’s week blah of Strictly Come Dancing and Bruce Forsyth is still around and kicking (well sort of). After last week’s comments, it transpires there are a growing number of people who feel Forsyth is something of a national treasure and that he should be preserved until the bitter end (not that there’s much left under the suit to preserve, I hear most of his organs are already pickled). Like Tommy Cooper, Brucie wants to keep going until he gasps his last breath live in front of the cameras, but, going on last Saturday’s performance, that wouldn’t be the first time he’s died on stage… In other news, the live finals of X Factor kept me “gripped” for a (not at all) gruelling two and a half hours, of which about ninety minutes were adverts! The big twist was that the judges had to send home one rubbish act from each category, which, this year, must have been a hard choice as that covers pretty much all of them. In fact, I’ve heard cats in heat with more vocal ability that most of the acts this year, and the sheer number of manufactured groups is alarming! Is this really the way forward - to throw together the best runner up ‘talent’ in the contest in the hope that they’ll stick as a group in their own right? That seems like the ultimate in shallow pop culture and the epitome of all that’s wrong with the industry. And lastly, in my role as movie reviewer extraordinaire, it would be remiss of me not to inform you that Celluloid Screams returns to the Showroom Cinema from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 October 2011. The third year of the festival includes the usual blend of back to back horror movies from around the world, including UK Premieres, horror classics and short films. Check out the Showroom website for film information and pricing, but this now regular event is really is something special if you’re a horror fan. A few of this year’s movies are: Inbred, The Theatre Bizarre, Masks, Cold Sweat, Helldriver, The Whisperer In Darkness, Harold’s Going Stiff (don’t be crude! This was filmed entirely on location in and around Penistone), and the classics: Dust Devil, Vampyres, Re-Animator, and Halloween. What do you mean ‘you’ve never heard of any of them!’? If you like your horror chilled and your gore full on, then this really is the event for you in the North! http://www.celluloidscreams.co.uk/

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
Chinese Astrology (Part One) Chinese astrology relates each year to an animal. There are many myths and legends about how the 12 animals representing the 12 years in a lunar cycle came into being. One of the most popular is that the Lord Buddha summoned all the animals to come to him before departing this world. Only 12 animals made the journey successfully, and in gratitude he named a lunar year after each. For the purpose of this article it is not possible to discuss the personal dates. This article only deals with your Zodiac sign and the animal in Chinese Astrology that belongs to the Western sign. In short I have married up your Zodiac sign with the Chinese one. This week’s article will cover Aries to Libra & next week’s Scorpio to Pisces. The animals in Chinese Astrology are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Pig, Monkey, Rooster and Dog. There are also five elements in Chinese Astrology that are thought to be the five ways in which energy expresses itself in the natural world. These are Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth. Aries - The Dragon - Fire Sign The sign of the Dragon is comparable with Aries. These two married together with their fiery nature means you should watch out! A very powerful relationship! Don’t cross either of these two or you will disappear in a puff of smoke. Taurus - The Snake - Earth Sign Taurus is compatible with the Snake. They have the sensual intrigue of Mata - Hari and the wisdom of Confucius. When the Snake enters a room people notice, marry this with the immaculate Taurean and they form a striking pair. When you hear the song ‘Money Makes The World Go Round’ think of these two spending money together! Gemini - The Horse - Air Sign The Horse and Gemini Twins ride the plains together, with their desire for freedom there is no stopping this pair! They will ride into the sunset. Both signs can be fickle and require motivation. The
Cancer - The Sheep - Water Sign What a combination! Both the Sheep and Cancer are family orientated. Although the supersensitive Sheep and crabby Crab can make for a difficult relationship. They may clash over who is incharge! The Crab’s claws come out and pinch the wary Sheep. Leo - The Monkey - Fire Sign The Monkey is mischievous, devious, and lovable just like the cuddly Lion. Monkeys are also gamblers just like Leo and will often take risks. They are never lost for words. Watch out! With Leo’s confidence and the Monkey’s love of risk taking they will take the shirt off your back.

The Virgo - The Rooster - Earth Sign Roosters are highly critical just like the Virgo Maiden. Both detest disorganisation and are always precise and efficient. The Rooster is fond of the limelight and will use a loud crow to make others sit up and listen. The Virgo Maiden however, will steer away from the limelight. Libra - The Dog - Air Sign Like its corresponding sign Libra, the Dog is distinguished by its sense of justice. Dogs are vociferous and noisy righting the wrongs with the peace loving Libra in tow. The Dog is definitely the master in this relationship. Libra will sit on the fence while the Dog will jump over it. That is the first six, next week is the remainder of the Zodiac/Animal signs. NEWS & INFORMATION
OLDER PEOPLE URGED TO BACK FIRE SERVICE SAFETY CAMPAIGN Alex Mills, SYFR
Hundreds of older people are injured in accidental house fires in South Yorkshire every year. Lifestyles, age and disabilities make some people more at risk of fire and the experience of South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue shows that older people are often amongst those most vulnerable to suffering an accidental fire in their home.
But with just one phone call, you can help protect yourself, a friend or a loved one from fire. South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue is urging carers to sign up to its free home safety check service as it seeks to prevent hundreds of people being injured in accidental house fires every year. Twenty three people have died in accidental house fires in South Yorkshire since 2007 and last year alone the fire service attended more than 600 accidental house fires across the county resulting in 130 injuries. That’s why the county’s firefighters are asking older to sign up to its free service, whereby firefighters or community safety staff will visit the home of the person you care for at a convenient time. During the visit you will then be given advice on: • How to make your home safer • What to do in the event of a fire • What to do if you are trapped by a fire Our staff will also fit free smoke alarms if your house is without one and explain how to maintain it correctly. SYFR’s head of community safety Phil Shilito, said: “Accidental house fires can devastate homes and ruin lives. We want to help older people, by offering the peace of mind our free home safety checks deliver and by giving them some basic advice which might just help save someone’s life. “Even following a basic routine every time they visit someone’s home could dramatically reduce the chances of that person having a fire in their home.” Top tips older people can use to help reduce the risk of fire in the home include: • Look out for possible fire risks, such as unsafe wiring, heaters or candles • Exits- make sure they are clear and door keys are in a safe, easy to find place • Turn off all electrical appliances after use, especially around the kitchen • Smoke alarms- test them every week To arrange your home safety check, or for general fire safety advice, call 0114 253 2314 or text the word FREE to 87023. A member of our community safety team will call you back to arrange the visit. You can also arrange a home safety check, or find out more about reducing fires, online at www.syfire.gov.uk
HOW DO I GET A SECOND OPINION?
ISSUE
922 12/10/11
http://www.nhs.uk/chq/pages/910.aspx?c ategoryid=68&subcategoryid=156 You can ask your GP or another healthcare professional for a second or further opinion (an opinion about your health condition from a different doctor). Although you do not have a legal right to a second opinion, a healthcare professional will rarely refuse to refer you for one. Do you need a second opinion? Before requesting a second opinion, it’s worth asking your GP or consultant to go over and explain anything you don’t understand. If you’re unhappy with your diagnosis or would like to consider a different course of treatment, discuss this with them. Your GP or consultant will be happy to explain things and in many cases there may be no need for a second opinion. Can anyone else ask for a second opinion? Your family or carer can also ask for a second opinion on your behalf, but only with your consent. If someone requests a second opinion on your behalf, they should have all the information about your illness or condition, and check they understand it thoroughly. Sometimes a GP or consultant may ask a colleague to provide a second opinion. For example, doctors may ask their colleagues about a complicated case. Second opinion from a different GP If you would like a second opinion after receiving advice from your GP, you can ask them to refer you to another GP. Alternatively, you may consider asking to see a different GP at your surgery, if you’re registered at a surgery with more than one GP, or changing to a different GP surgery. Second opinion from a different consultant If you would like a second opinion after seeing a consultant (a senior medical doctor who specialises in a particular field of medicine), you need to go back to your GP and ask them to refer you again. If your GP agrees to refer you to a new consultant, the consultant will be told that this is your second opinion. They will also be sent any relevant test results or X-rays previously carried out. This does not mean that the new consultant will automatically take over your care. If you want to be treated by the new consultant, this will need to be arranged with the doctors and hospital. How long will I have to wait for a second opinion? People who ask for a second opinion have already seen a doctor, so they may have to wait. A second opinion with a different consultant will also usually be at a different hospital, which may involve some travelling. Getting a second opinion may therefore delay any treatment that you need. If you have a serious medical condition, you should take this into account when deciding to ask for a second opinion. Ask your doctor whether a delay in starting treatment could be harmful.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service is looking to apply for foundation trust status in 2012. They have developed plans for how they would like to take the new organisation forward in the future. However, they want to be sure that you, as a resident and/or colleague, have a say in what they are proposing. Between now and 4 December 2011 everyone across Yorkshire is invited to share their views about the plans and help to shape the way that ambulance services are provided in the future. They are also starting to recruit ‘members’ to the new organisation - who will be made up of staff and the public across Yorkshire. Members will help to influence decisions that are made and ensure that they really benefit our local communities. Have your say – join in the consultation and share your views. Visit the ambulance trust’s website for more information about their future plans and how to become a member: www.yas.nhs.uk/ourfutureplans Closing Date - 4th December 2011

INTRODUCING THIS YEARS WINNERS... Following a record vote, we are delighted to announce the winners of the 2011 Clubland Awards!
Again this year we have a host of new winners – with many young up and coming performers who have made a real impression on clubgoers this year. Once again South Yorkshire has proved to be a real hotbed of genuine talent – with acts who are prepared to graft and learn their trade the hard way, despite the lure of X Factor and other ”instant fame” reality shows! Also it’s been a delight to see so many votes come in from our new friends in Doncaster. Many of the categories were extremely close – some of the awards were not decided until the final day’s votes were received. We believe that the winners genuinely represent the true opinions of our readers and regular supporters of Clubland – despite the attempts of some acts to go against the spirit of our awards by openly canvassing votes on Facebook and other sites!
BEST MALE
Coming up on Thursday 27th October is the Gala Presentation Night at Crookes Club – tickets are available from the Mercury – call 0114 2763701. Many of the winners are performing, along with comperes Steph King and Gary Phillips, and we are delighted that we will be joined by Look North’s Harry Gration.
A special treat this year will be the presentation of the Mercury’s Lifetime Achievement Award to Roy and Jackie Toaduff – veterans of stage, screen and TV with a career spanning over forty years. The Spirit of Lincolnshire Also this year sees a special award – the Clubland Appreciation Award to Star Star – who are retiring at Christmas after over twenty five years on the Clubland circuit.

not make them a better act but it makes them unique and enhances the entertainment value). It amazes me that the young people do not want to see this but instead flock over these reality tv show I have been visiting clubs for stars from the x factor who in many years and gone are the days of old when clubs were full my opinion do not come close to but the one thing that keeps me some of the artists in our clubs. I hope that you will consider going in is the quality of some of the artists we see now in our my votes. I also hope that the number of artists touting for votes clubs. Especially the youngsters coming through. The crowds may on networking sites etc will not manage to outweigh the votes not be there but the quality acts of the general public voting the are. artists they have seen on merit. I go out with a group of friends I have been visiting clubs for 30 to see artists and as everyone years and have seen Clubland at will, we have our favourites that its greatest and of course now at we like and those that we don’t, a more difficult time. I am friends but we like getting to know the artists that we follow and we have with hundreds of acts as i love watching them and speaking done this for years, we sit with to them and to see certain acts them at gigs and make them feel asking for votes from strangers etc appreciated, its a very hard job for them. I remember when acts asking for people to text vote in for them and their friends saddens came with just a tape deck and a me that the genuine quality acts couple of battered old speakers and a wire mic. Now I see solo’s who deserve recognition for their talents in a struggling industry are with full light shows and even not rewarded. some with video screens at the back - that to me is dedication Frank Thomas to the industry (of course it does
As many of your readers will be aware clubs and pubs are facing problems financially, and are finding it very hard to keep going. I have been the secretary of the Philadelphian Working Mens Club in Sheffield for about 3 years now, we have a small committee and rely on help from our members a lot of the time to keep the club running. I have several concerns about clubland and fear there may not be many of us left if the government has it’s way. I have spoken to a number of clubs, suppliers and other people concerning the situation in clubland and the question I ask them and discuss with them is getting help from the CIU concerning their difficulties. Many occassions clubs are left to defend themselves from their creditors and as a result get involved in companies “offering” to solve all their debt problems and help the with their business in return for a fee or some kind of development rights should the club shut. Many club committes find it difficult to use a business plan approach to their clubs and just plod along hoping things turn around and hoping the baliffs dont come knocking at the door. This is a very stressful situation to
be in, when you a left on your own to ring the creditors and tell them the situation, you are in and making a payment plan. No wonder no one wants to be on commitees any more. While are this is going on you then think about contacting the CIU but the CIU will only give you the telephone number of a person they think might be able to help. This person usually comes in, looks at your overheads, and your debts and gives general advice about what you should be doing. When in fact you may have already started the process of reducing your overheads, looking at the products which are not selling, removing them and increasing the prices of your products. I am concerned that Clubs are paying subs to the CIU, but are not getting the support they really need. Clubs need the CIU to create a special team of advisors and support where they can help speak to suppliers on your behalf and give you some breathing space. To many clubs have shut because they have not received this kind of support. Please let me know what you think about the issues raised . Thanks - Abdul Kaid (sec) Philadelphian Working mens Club Sheffield

SHEFFIELD OKTOBERFEST There is a feast of entertainment at the White Lion and Chantrey Arms, Sheffield this October. Mercury readers have taken The White Lion at Heeley and it’s sister pub, The Chantrey at Woodseats, to their hearts since owner Danny Grayson took over and launched a series of free events at both pubs. Coming up this month, and lasting three days from 21st to 23rd, is their very own Beer Festival with free food (!) and live music every day at the White Lion. Both pubs are hosting their own Mega Halloween Fancy Dress Parties, again with live acts, on Saturday, 29th October. Ian Drury and the Blockheads tribute band Reasons To Be Cheerful appear at The Chantrey, while at The White Lion, local band Bad Penny provide the entertainment. On top of all this, Danny is awarding a £50 cash prize for the best costume, again at both pubs. Many other days of entertainment are planned for October so keep looking at their ads in The Mercury for the full schedule.
PAUL CARRACK IS BACK MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
Yes, Crookes’s finest has a new song out called ‘Time to move on’ and he’s joining me to tell us all about it on Friday’s Breakfast Show. It comes off the back of his ‘A Different Hat’ CD which was released last year featuring orchestral collaborations and interpretations of both his own material and classics from the likes of Nat King Cole and Edith Piaf, although his new song will probably sound familiar to the type of music we know him for more. A familiar voice and musician on many hit songs for nearly 40 years, Paul now lives in London. He’s been part of Ace in the 70s, Roxy Music, Squeeze, where he sang lead vocals on the hit ‘Tempted’ and was most famously part of Mike and The Mechanics until a few years ago. He shared lead vocals with former Sad Café singer, the late Paul Young and was the voice of the Number One hit ‘The Living Years’. Although he lives away from our area now, his band are all Sheffield people and he’s coming back to perform live in the near future. You can catch him at the City Hall on December 17th and in Chesterfield on February 11th next year. In the mean time if you’d like to hear more from the man himself, join Paul and me Friday morning after 7.30.
STUDENTS AND CLUBS CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
Fresher’s week at the universities may have come and gone in an alcohol-fuelled haze for many new students. Getting used to lectures, halls of residence and life away from home can be hard at first. Social clubs might seem light years away from Planet Campus but in fact links have been made between some students and clubs. It’s not always the case that young people aren’t interested in clubs. And more could be done by clubs looking to bringing in some youthful new blood. I shall be exploring these themes this week and next. Club Historians has been contacted on numerous occasions by students researching working class culture and history. One group of Film students from Sussex University, for example, got in touch about their final year project which was to be a documentary of a local club, the Brighton Trades Labour Club. Jackson Ducasse was one of this group and first thought of filming what went there even though he had scant experience of club life. He told me that the idea for ‘New Members Welcome’ was formed on his daily bus journey into University. As a young person ‘neither personally nor professionally involved in industry’, he had only limited understanding of what a working men’s club was actually like but he did have strong curiosity about the lifestyle of club members. ‘Having witnessed only momentary snapshots of club life, mainly gained from the sight of club members chatting and smoking outside, my curiosity only grew. I recall one day passing the club and noticing a piece of hand written graffiti which read “Labour has failed us all” – I believe it was this small protest which really sparked my desire to get to know the club and its members.’ His film group started to use the club and made friends with members, who were generous and helpful. ‘We were often offered drinks, asked to take part in various games (bingo, karaoke etc.) and on many occasions club members would point us in the direction of somebody who would be able to give us information for the film.’ Club members often lived up to their expectations of being ‘lively characters.’ Jackson believed that ‘the story of the club might be able to act as a reminder of what has happened to the parts of British society that are deemed unfashionable by the mainstream media.’ His sentiments and aims were shared and supported by Club Historians and the documentary turned out to be very insightful, funny and poignant. The bridge between Planet Campus and clubs had definitely been crossed. I’m sure there will be more this academic year.

REVIEW: MAD COLOURS by KT Evans
PREVIEW: MILES KANE by KT Evans
Bringing together the Scenester’s of Sheffield since 2010, SOYO Live remains one of the best weekly gig nights in town. A salute to all things local, the night showcases bands, acts and musicians across the City, giving everyone a fair crack of the musical whip. This week, Mad Colours polished up their guitars to take on the indie masses, who similar to the weather, poured in to see the Hot Boys Trio…twit twoo. Formerly The Heebie Jeebies, Mad Colours remain as Owen, Del and Thom with pretty much the same back catalogue prior to their name change. However, stepping their performance levels up a notch, Mad Colours bolstered on stage with a set to excite even the most stale of viewers. Crowd numbers can be hit or miss at any local gig, however SOYO Live contradicts this, with Monday night by no means the exception. Flocking from in and around Sheffield to see them perform, Mad Colours clearly have a loyal following, which, standard for any trendies gig, resulted in copious amounts of torso swaying and winkle-picker foot tapping. (Note to self: buy some pointy shoes!) Ever the three most charismatic stage performers on the local scene, Mad Colours didn’t hold back with their twenty minute long set, a thorough dedication to up-tempo indie pop. Track ‘Hot Wet Sticky Flowers’ pretty much sums the band up… light hearted and humorous yes, however unarguably polished and oozing professionalism. The three piece clearly know what sort of genre they’re fitting into and are experimenting with this to their full advantage. Hell, they’re not going to win an award for the most ‘out there’ performers around, but this isn’t what they’re after. All about the crack and making the most out of being on stage, Mad Colours attempted and succeeded to put a smile across everyone’s face. Pausing sporadically throughout the set, once to wish bassist Del a happy birthday and others to simply have a chat with his audience, front man Owen is the puppet master of his band with distinct vocals and heap loads of confidence. However, all eyes were on Del who, most certainly dressing for the occasion, sported a ‘geography teacher-esque’ tweed jacket and broach…a slight improvement from rocking a set of pyjamas at last year’s Tramlines. Hell in ten year’s time, Marks and Spenser could be having a field day! SOYO Live returns every Monday, free entry, over 18’s only. Catch Elephant Keys headline next week. Doors 8.30pm. Get yourself down!
Former front man of The Rascals and one half of The Last Shadow Puppets, Miles Kane will be coming to Sheffield’s Leadmill on 14th October. Prepare to be warmed up by his authentically indie headline set, Kane is returning after his hugely successful sell-out show back in May to once again inject some rock ‘n’ roll into the Steel City. With his debut album peaking at number eleven in the UK album Charts back in May 2011, it’s pretty fair to say Miles Kane has had his best year yet in his attempt to pursue a solo career. With tracks such as ‘Rearrange’ and ‘Inhaler’ certified dance floor fillers in any indie hangout around the country, Kane has gone from fronting bands and groups to becoming one of the most talked about up-and-coming stars of 2011. Although still arguably on the periphery of multi-national fame, after top festival appearances this summer and a massive sell-out tour earlier this year, Kane’s career is set to rocket further into the forthcoming year. Tasting the ultimate chart success of a number one album back in 2008 with The Last Shadow Puppets, Kane teamed up with Arctic Monkeys front man Alex Turner to release their debut album. Nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, ‘The Age Of The Understatement’ was an eclectic mix of full orchestra numbers along with characteristically witty lyrics as delivered by both Turner and Kane on the twelve track release. Wining the best new act at the Q Awards 2008, The Last Shadow Puppets have yet to confirm the writing or recording of a second album…fingers crossed they come to their senses and pick up the pen again! Along with The Last Shadow Puppets, Kane was also involved with indie band The Rascals until his departure in August 2009. Although not achieving commercial success, their debut album ‘Rascalize’ peaked at number one hundred in the UK charts, allowing Kane more recognition form the likes of NME, a strong advocate of the singer song writer from The Wirral. Supporting Arctic Monkeys on their hometown gigs at Don Valley Bowl back in June, Miles Kane is a familiar face on the Sheffield gig circuit, having played many of the cities venues throughout his historically successful career. With clever riffs and foot tapping melodies, Kane is a true reflection of the UK’s underground indie scene. Miles Kane will be performing at Sheffield’s Leadmill this Friday 14th October. For more info including tickets, times and admissions, see www. theleadmill.co.uk or his official website on www. mileskane.com.

TELLISON
West London’s cult alt-indie four piece Tellison release their new single ‘Edith’ on 2nd October through Naim Edge Records, the second from this summer’s much loved new, Peter Miles (The King Blues, Frank Turner, We Are The Ocean) produced album ‘The Wages Of Fear’. Accompanying the digital single release of ‘Edith’ will be a limited edition (numbered) 7” vinyl, complete with b side from Manchester’s TCTS, the official SoundCloud Remix Competition winner, as judged by Tellison themselves. Tellison’s new album ‘The Wages Of Fear’, despite a ball-busting piracy leak ahead of its June release, has rapidly forged new ground for one of Britain’s most-loved underground alt-indie phenomena. It is only getting busier for Tellison as they release their first US single ‘Freud Links The Teeth And The Heart’ through Family Records this Autumn and will tour Europe to promote their album release before the year is out. After much demand, Tellison also follow up the recent June ‘The Wages Of Fear’ tour with further dates throughout October. The band will be taking their (tragically leaking) van across the UK once more and visit the more ‘out of the way’ venues this Country has to offer. Expect histrionics, guitar throwing and thousand yard stares. Expect sweat, blood, smiles and spit. Expect classic British indie rock, people like you, inexplicably on a stage, doing their god-damned best. Tellison Sat 15th October - The Harley - £6

her secret, Ian resorts to drastic measures in a bid to impress Mandy, and Fat Boy thinks his chance with Whitney has finally come. Tues - After hatching a plan to wind up Ian, Mandy takes great delight in punishing him for his paranoid accusations. Tyler and Whitney plan a special night in together, but both are beside themselves with nerves; and Syed enjoys spending time with Yasmin and Amira, knowing he cannot keep this from Christian for long. Thurs - Ian reaches a momentous decision after a heart-to-heart with Alfie, while Mandy regrets her actions. Pat encourages Whitney to face her fears and stand up for herself, but things take an unexpected twist when she takes Patʼs advice. Fri - It is party time at the Moonsʼ, but will Tylerʼs efforts to attract Whitneyʼs attention have the desired effect? Laurenʼs plans to support her Mum backfire as a familiar face returns to Walford, while the strain of sorting out family problems take their toll on Pat.

Angler’s Corner Racing Form by Clint Walker
Well, after a couple of weeks of severe discomfort (especially when picking up the landing net) I’ve discovered that what was originally diagnosed as a pulled muscle is in fact a ‘popped rib’. The subsequent damage to the dorsal ligament has had me close to tears at times, but super duper painkillers now mean I can go fishing again! Yay! This week I’ve been back on a local club water trying to bag an end of season carp to no avail; another blank ensued, although I did get smashed up within ten minutes of putting my rigs out. Although I didn’t catch, (neither did anyone else!) I did have a very pleasant day and spoke to a few other members about the club. I used to be on committee before politics and time got the better of me, but I still keep an ear to the ground and often to colleagues who still sit in post, so I always take an interest in what others have to say. My current club has 1600 members; it’s too many, but what are the constraints which really affect the numbers.....? Any club gains income through membership subscriptions, some may earn funds by netting or selling fish, but aside from that, there isn’t much money to be made. All clubs have overheads; from the hire of the pub/club for the AGM to the increasing costs of quality leases, ALL have to be met from these limited funds or the club folds; simple economics. It’s an incredibly tough situation to deal with; members want new waters, committee must do their utmost to obtain them or members go elsewhere. Less members means less money, so leases have to be given up or relinquished, and again, membership falls. On the other hand, lots of members, more money, more scope to grab new waters BUT no room on the bank!! A delicate balance needs to be struck, but regardless, the committee will NEVER appease everyone! Tough job..... How about members who transgress the rules? Around here, if a member is found to have committed a breach of club rules so serious that the controlling club is left with no option but to expel them, what then? Usually, they just join another club, and the ‘problem’ of an inconsiderate or disrespectful angler with little consideration for others is passed onto a new local club. No more; all the major clubs in the area have now agreed to share information whenever a member is banned so the problem doesn’t go elsewhere; banned from one, banned from all! I know to some, this may seem extreme, but if you have a disruptive angler who shows no regard for your angling, would you want him in your club?? No, I thought not..... If you have ever thought of offering to assist your club committee, I would advise you to do it, your assistance WILL be appreciated! It does offer a sense of satisfaction, but be warned, it’s not all plain sailing!

It’s a bumper TV card on Saturday as Ascor stages the British Champions Day, Cheltenham opens its NH season and Channel 4 screen a couple of races from Catterick and one from Kelso. Starting at Ascot where Qipco sponsor a truly fantastic line up and 5 races are shown on BBC1: In the opener at 1.50 Opinion Poll beat all bar Saddlers Mark last time at Doncaster, in a contest that was run in an excellent time, and should be able to regain the winning thread here. Leaving aside the disappointing Cavalryman the next best look to be Meeznah (also declared for the 3.00 race), Times Up and the 3yo Colourvision who ran a good race to finish third in last week’s Cesarewitch handicap. The 2.25 is a 6 furlong Group 2 contest where Deacon Blues may be able to land a 5 timer. However he has a few good animals in opposition including French raider Moonlight Cloud and Prime Defender to name but two. Unfortunately the odds currently on offer about Deacon Blues (5/2) look pretty skinny to me and I prefer to go for a bit better value. Course and distance winner Royal Rock, who has to step up a bit on his past achievements but is in fine form and won for the column two weeks ago, looks to fit the bill nicely. The current 28/1 about him looks a very reasonable price and he will do for me. I fancy Moonlight Cloud may also run the selection close, along with Deacon Blues. At the current 66/1 Hughie Morrison’s course and distance winning mare Cill Rialaig is a huge price for the 3.00 12 furlong contest, far too big to be left out of calculations. The price does not reflect her chances and she has to be the selection, purely on value terms. She can get the better of the up-and-coming Gertrude Bell, Miss Crissy, Vita Nova and Meeznah in what promises to be a cracking contest. At 3.35 Frankel should not really be opposed in the Group 1 Qipco sponsored QE11 Stakes over a mile. However his current price of 1/3 does not look attractive, even given his unbeaten record. I prefer instead to go for an each way alternative and like the

look of Immortal Verse. The 6/1 on offer about this one makes much more appeal as there would be three places available to get a return of 2.2 stakes from the 2 stakes invested, with a reasonable chance of shaking up the favourite and the possibility of a win to boot. For the 4.10 Group 1 10 furlong contest I am sticking with Arc disappointment Reliable Man. That day he didn’t manage to cope with the poor draw and never really figured. I am going to forgive him that bad run as I think he is much better than that showing. I reckon that he may be given most to do by Midday, Casamento, Cirrus des Aigles and the other 3yo pair Nathaniel and Dubai Prince. If Reliable Man does not turn up then Nathaniel is the reserve selection followed by Midday, who Tom Queally has chosen over Twice Over. At Cheltenham there is a super start to the NH season with 4 cracking contests on C4. In their opener at 2.05, a three mile + Class 3 Novice Hurdle I reckon that Ongenstown Lad can land the spoils. This one looks to be going places this year and will take all the beating here. Round Tom, Deireadh Re, Shammy Buskins and The Big Freeze are his chief opponents. The 2.40 is a two and a half mile Class 2 handicap chase. Providing he strips fit enough to himself justice this looks tailor-made for Charlie Mann’s Fine Parchment who rates fairly confident selection. Safari Journey, Life of a Luso, and Nudge and Nurdle look to be his main opposition although Marley Roca and recent winner Benbane Head may also prove troublesome. In the 3.15 two mile + Class 2 Hurdle I like the chance of Ultravox who can prevail in a tight contest. One for Joules, Palawi, Plan A and Lava Lamp lok to be the chief threats. The 3.50 Class 2 Handicap chase over three miles + can go to another of our recent winners Benny Be Good who looked to me as though he would relish this stiff track and the extra couple of furlongs when winning last time at Market Rasen. Of the opposition Gullible Gordon, Qhilimar, Frosted Grape, No Panic and Le Burf are feared most. At Catterick I reckon the the seven furlong nursery can be fought out between Aleut, Always Ends Well and Middleton Flyer. Aleut is the selection. At 2.55 there is an almost impossible-looking sprint handicap that may be won by Moorhouse Lad. Judge’N’Jury, Fathom Five, Doc Hay and Magical Macey head a host of dangers. Finally, Channel 4 are covering the Kelso 3.25, a three

Millers and Rovers News & Reviews 2011/12
MILLERS NEWS 2011/12 BREWERS TAKE POINTS MATCH REPORT www.themillers.co.uk
Rotherham United slipped to their third straight league defeat after a goal from Justin Richards gave Burton Albion a narrow 1-0 victory at Don Valley Stadium. The Millers had chances to get something from the game but a string of excellent saves from Albion ‘keeper Ross Atkins ensured that Burton left with all three points. Both sides took a while to get a firm grip on the game which was played in wet conditions highlighted by some loose play in the opening stages. However on eight minutes the visitors came to life and opened the scoring with the first chance of the game. Jimmy Phillips played the ball into the path of Cleveland Taylor whose shot deflected off Tom Newey and Justin Richards appeared to touch the ball into the net from close range, prompting protests from Warrington who was appealing for an offside flag. Burton continued to carry the greater threat in attack, with Billy Kee’s strike from just inside the area being deflected wide after a challenge from Mullins. The Millers almost found a way back into the game on 23 minutes after Michael Raynes hammered a clearance downfield. Lewis Grabban showed excellent close control to stop the ball dead before striking towards goal, but his effort was blocked and deflected behind. The visitors came close to doubling their advantage with 32 minutes on the clock when Phillips’ drilled cross cannoned off the leg of Mullins and skewed over Warrington’s crossbar. The Millers changed their shape and pushed Grabban up front alongside Alex Revell, as they resorted to a more conventional 4-4-2 and immediately looked more dangerous. A minute later and the Millers best piece of football of the half created a chance for Grabban, but he blazed over after being teed up by Ben Pringle from Danny Schofield’s right wing cross. The home side were beginning to carry more of an attacking threat and were inches away from grabbing an equaliser
37
when Revell’s fierce shot flew just over the crossbar, after he picked up Grabban’s knock down. Then on 41 minutes Schofield had a shot from the right deflected over for a corner after he did well to wriggle away from the attention of Danny Blanchett. At the other end Phillips was continuing to terrorise Dale Tonge and caused danger in the Millers box twice in quick succession with decent deliveries from the Burton left. Firstly, his low centre was forced away by Mullins and then from the resulting corner, the Millers were able to scramble clear after Taylor headed back into the danger area. The Millers continued to press for an equaliser early in the second period and the lively Grabban caused a scramble in the area with his cross from the right, but no one in a Millers shirt could get a shot away. However a minute later and Grabban had no trouble and was unfortunate to see his thunder bolt from distance hit the crossbar and bounce to safety. On 54 minutes Andy Scott made his first change of the match by introducing Gareth Evans in place of Ben Pringle and a minute later the Millers were almost level through Danny Harrison. Schofield produced a cross from the right and Harrison’s firm header was saved well by ‘keeper Atkins. Evans then had his first involvement of the match as he outpaced Andy Corbett on the left but no one could turn home his cross and the visitors were able to clear. On 64 minutes the visitors were thankful to Atkins again as he palmed away Harrison’s drive from the edge of the area, with substitute Marcus Marshall firing the rebound wide. The Millers continued to pepper the Burton goal and this time it was Evans who saw his shot beaten away by the increasingly busy Atkins in the visitors’ goal. Moments later a corner from Marshall found Mullins at the back post but he planted his header wide of the far post. As the game entered its closing stages the Millers continued their quest for an equaliser, with Evans again causing problems down the left. This time his cross to the back post found Raynes but the defender could only glance his header wide of the far post.
ROVERS NEWS 2011/12 ROVERS BEAT YOUNG ROVERS LAND UNITED SIDE IN HAMMERSʼ ILUNGA ROVERS NEWS PRACTISE GAME www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk MATCH REPORT www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk
Rovers’ squad travelled over the Pennines to face a Manchester United reserve side at a very windy Carrington Training Complex, as part of Dean Saunders’ preperation ahead of the Leeds United game next week. Rovers put a strong squad against a good young United side that included Reece Brown who featured on loan for Rovers under Sean O’Driscoll. Rovers dominated the first half and took a well earned lead on 16 minutes, when defender George Friend performed a bicycle kick in the United six yard box to beat Tomasz Kuszczak. Rovers continued to play some very good football with the midfield of Oster, Stock and Gillett bossing every ball. Mason replaced Stock though on 20 minutes as a precaution after a clumsy challenge. Dean Saunders made wholesale changes at half time and the game became a bit more of an equal battle although Rovers could have added to their tally on quite few occasions.
Congo international defender Herita Ilunga joined Doncaster Rovers from West Ham on a three months loan deal today. The powerful 29-year-old left back played for French clubs Saint Etienne and Toulouse before initially joining West Ham on loan in 2008 and signed a four year contract in April the following year. Ilunga began his league career in Spain with Espanyol before moving to Saint Etienne where he was Player of the Year and made 135 appearances. He played in the UEFA Champions League with Toulouse before joining the Hammers where he has been first choice left back until recently and played in the 1-0 win at the Keepmoat earlier in the season. Ilunga has gained 19 caps for Congo and helped them reach the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations in 2006.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2011/12 OWLS MOVE INTO SECOND MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk
A 3-1 win over Chesterfield gave Wednesday their best home start to a season in 30 years. A first half goal from Lewis Buxton and two after the break from Gary Madine and Ben Marshall did the damage as the Owls advanced to an automatic promotion slot for the first time this term. Ex-Owl Leon Clarke scored on his return to Hillsborough but it was not enough and Wednesday head into next weekend’s Steel City derby with Sheffield United full of confidence following this fourth win on the bounce. All the early pressure came from the hosts, who forced a string of corners and almost scored from the third but ex-Owl Drew Talbot cleared the danger from Rob Jones’ flick-on. The pressure continued, which in turn spawned more corners, from which the Owls inevitably took the lead on 17 minutes. Marshall sent a looping flag kick right into the danger zone and Buxton climbed high to nod beyond the outstretched Gary Fleming and into the far corner. Marshall was proving a real handful to the Spireites’ defence, with his penetrating runs down the right and through the middle causing problems. At the other end, Chesterfield fans had to wait until the half-hour mark until their side truly threatened when Talbot did well down the flank and played in a daisycutter that fell the wrong side of the post. The game soon reverted to type, though, and home debutant Chris O’Grady was a whisker away from getting something on Buxton’s feed from the channel.
The first half ended with Mark Randall scuffing a promising opportunity wide, which summed up an unconvincing opening period for the visitors. As a result, Chesterfield started the second half brightly and Clarke headed a good chance wide soon after the restart. The Spireites pushed on and the Owls introduced Jermaine Johnson to up the attacking ante, which helped Gary Megson’s men wrestle back the balance. And on 59 minutes, Wednesday doubled their lead through the in-form Madine, who claimed his tenth goal in nine games. There seemed little on for the striker when he picked up possession from O’Grady 20 yards out on the angle of the penalty area. But Madine showed exactly why he heads the League 1 goalscoring table with a blistering hit that flew into the corner of the Kop net past a despairing Fleming. The second goal took the wind from the Spireites’ sails and with the clock ticking down, the closing exchanges seemed academic. But Chesterfield suddenly gave themselves hope by halving the deficit with ten minutes to go when Randall sent in a corner that was converted by Clarke from close range. But just as a frantic finish was on the cards, Marshall picked up possession down the left with three minutes to go before cutting inside to drill a low shot home that made sure of the points. Owls: Bywater, Buxton, Batth, Jones, Bennett, O’Connor (J Johnson 53), Semedo, Lines, Marshall, Madine (McGoldrick 90), O’Grady (Sedgwick 72) Unused substitutes: O’Donnell, Reynolds Chesterfield: Fleming, Talbot, Howden, Downes, Grounds, Mendy, Allott (Whitaker 76), Randall, Westcarr (Bowery 46), Clarke, Morgan Unused substitutes: Smith, Clay, Ford
MEGSON HAILS ON TARGET TRIO GAFFERʼS REACTION www.swfc.co.uk
Gary Megson has hailed the three goalscorers who helped send Wednesday into an automatic elevation slot. Lewis Buxton, Gary Madine and Ben Marshall found the net for the Owls against Chesterfield on Saturday and Megson had words of praise for the ontarget trio. He said: “Lewis was due a goal because he said he would score from a set piece in one of the next two games before we played Hartlepool last week. “Danny Batth has been after going up for set pieces so you could say this was Lewis’ last chance! “Gary Madine is playing extremely well. His confidence is sky high and rightly so, he thinks he will score every time he takes the field. “I thought Ben Marshall was excellent, he caused their left back all sorts of problems, particularly in the first half and he took his goal really well.” Megson also picked out defensive duo Rob Jones and Batth, who the manager said were back to their best after a solid display at the heart of the rearguard. He added: “Danny and Rob were terrific today. They showed they are back to their best and the goal we conceded was harsh on them because they deserved a clean sheet. “But it was a good win for us, although we were stretched for a short while after Chesterfield scored their goal. “We have six wins on the spin at home and that’s terrific but we are not there yet and we will continue to work hard.”
SECURE YOUR TICKET FOR DERBY SHOW SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday would like to urge supporters to buy early to secure the best views for Sunday’s Steel City derby beam back at Hillsborough. Ticket sales are going strong following the Owls’ fourth win in a row against Chesterfield on Saturday, which saw Wednesday climb to second in the League One table. Over 7,000 fans have already booked their seats at Hillsborough, in addition to the sold out away allocation of 4,300 Wednesday supporters at Bramall Lane, and now is the time to secure your place. The club would like to remind supporters that Sunday’s match is not being televised so the only way to view the Steel City derby will be on one of the three big screens at Hillsborough. Tickets can be purchased for £10 (adults) and £5 (concessions) online at swfc.co.uk/tickets, over the phone on 0871 9001867 or in person at the Owls Megastore.

BLADES APPOINT NEW COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
The Blades are set to appoint Steve Coakley as Commercial Director. Steve joins from neighbours Rotherham United, where he has spent the last two and half years as their Commercial Director. He will take up his new position at Bramall Lane shortly. Steve’s appointment is the latest part of the jigsaw in United’s new management structure following the new roles for Julian Winter and Craig Burns, which were announced recently.

Marcus Williams has extended his stay at Bramall Lane until December. The on-loan Reading left-back who initially signed a 28 day loan with United on the eve of the Huddersfield Town clash will now stay with the Blades for the maximum 93-day loan period which will end on Tuesday 13 December. Having made his debut against the Terriers, Williams started games against Colchester United and Wycombe Wanderers, before being sidelined with a dead leg for the fixtures against Charlton Athletic and Rotherham United, although he expects to be available for Sunday’s Steel City derby.
United’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy northern section quarter-final against Bradford City will be shown live on Sky. The Yorkshire derby will be played at Bramall Lane on Tuesday 8 November, kick-off 7.45pm, and has been selected for television coverage. The Blades secured their place in the area last eight with a 2-1 victory over Rotherham United at Don Valley earlier this month, when Ched Evans netted a last-gasp winner. The Bantams, currently 21st in League Two, have beaten Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town on penalties to progress to this stage.
