CLUBLAND AWARDS 2011 – THE SHOW OF THE YEAR!

MERCURY SPORT - PAGE 36

Next Thursday 27th October sees the presentation of the 2011 Mercury Awards – and what a great line up we have on the night for Clubland’s premier event! This year has seen record voting levels and new winners in almost all the categories, showing the great diversity of talent on offer in our local venues. It is especially pleasing to see so many younger acts breaking through as regulars on

the circuit. In these days of “instant” fame on the TV it is a delight to see so many youngsters willing to work hard and learn their trade properly, in front of a live (and occasionally disinterested or even unfriendly!) audience. There is no better example than that of Tristan Drew, winner of the Male Vocalist award, who tells us that in the past year or so he has performed almost one hundred times – which was reflected in

the votes he received to propel him to the Number One spot in his category! Once again we are delighted to welcome Molson Coors as our main sponsors, and Area Manager Tony Bolland, who is well known in many of our local clubs, sums it up; “We are here to help the grass roots of the entertainment industry. Some of our most loyal customers are to be found in the pubs and clubs of South

Yorkshire, the home of Stones Bitter, and it is important to us to put something back into the communities to help them survive and prosper. Some of the acts we see on stage on Thursday may well turn out to be the TV stars of the future.” The show will be hosted by perennial Clubland favourites Steph King and Gary Philips, and for many years Steph has been grooming the region’s talent through her “Stars of the

We are also hoping that, illness permitting, Look North’s Harry Gration will be able to join us to present the awards – however we do have a special mystery guest on standby should Harry not be well enough. Here at the Mercury we are really looking forward to the show – almost all the winning acts have promised to perform on the night. This will be the

only opportunity to see so many top acts performing on the same stage – see our advert on page 15 for full details of the line-up. Some tickets still remain for the show, which is being held at Crookes Social Club – but hurry if you want to book, as demand has been high since the winners were announced! Copley’s Column

Dan Aspinall from Chesterfield wowed the crowd and judging panel at the Open Mic UK Regional Showcase, and he is now one step away from performing at The O2 in London! Thousands of acts entered Open Mic UK 2011 and the best unsigned singers from across the country were chosen to perform at the live Regional Final shows. Dan Aspinall performed in front of a live audience and professional judging panel at The Sheffield City Hall Memorial Hall on Sunday 25th September 2011. He’s now set to perform at the Area Final for the chance to progress to the National Grand Final at The O2 in London as part of Live Fest, London’s biggest indoor festival on 21st January 2012. Those who made it through the audition stage took part in a live Regional head-to-head battle alongside the best talent in their area. Acts performed in front of hundreds of audience members and industry judges for the chance to grab a breakthrough recording contract. There’s over £50,000 in prizes up for grabs this year and the overall winner will be offered a recording contract, with up to £30,000 investment! They’ll also have the opportunity to tour across the UK. There are plenty of development opportunities available to acts taking part courtesy of ICMP, who will be offering song writing courses and master classes throughout the competition. The latter stages of the competition will also provide acts with the opportunity to impress many guests from record labels, agencies and the entertainment industry. For more information go to the website www. openmicuk.co.uk and to check out Dan Aspinall’s music. Please visit www.danaspinall.co.uk or find his fan page on Facebook at Dan Aspinall Music The long awaited results from this year’s Mercury Awards are now out, and it is nice to see a few new faces in the winner’s enclosure. This is guaranteed to be a fantastic night’s entertainment , and I must give a special mention to this year’s winners of the life times achievement award, Roy and Jackie Toaduff, who I am pleased to say were selected on my recommendation. readers of this column will fondly remember this class act, who topped the bill in all our local clubs, before getting summer seasons in Jersey and touring Australia. After much success, Roy, Jackie and manager/musical director Colin Edwardes decided to retire and bought the run down Chantry Hotel in Dronfield and prepared for a new life as hoteliers. However, this was to become only half time in their showbusiness career, as out of the blue they were offered a two week engagement on the QE2. They were so popular, being the first act to receive a standing ovation that Cunard were reluctant to let them go and the rest is history. They were retained for the next twenty years, travelling around the world twenty nine times, forming close friendships with many Hollywood stars and meeting royalty from many countries. This award is most richly deserved and this highly talented duo are rightly remembered for being showbusiness legends. I regularly have breakfast these days at the Chantry with many top artistes on the local circuit, and the respect and admiration they show for Roy and Jackie is plain to see. Jackie has written a book about their fantastic lives entitled ‘Coaldust to Stardust’ which is a fascinating read and may be obtained from all good bookshops and Amazon and is highly recommended. Artistes appearing will be Gary Phillips and a few guest celebrities. As always at the Forest, this promises to be a fantastic evening of entertainment, and hopefully a few pounds will be raised. The first Sheffield football derby took place on Sunday with honours even with a two all draw, after the Blades had led by two goals to nil at half time. However the Owls rallied in the second half to share the spoils. Rumour has it that David Blunkett has joined the coaching staff at Bramall Lane to teach them how to hold a lead.

Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS

Two campers are walking through the woods when a huge brown bear suddenly appears in the clearing about 50 feet in front of them. The bear sees the campers and begins to head toward them. The first guys drops his backpack, digs out a pair of sneakers, and frantically begins to put them on. The second guys says, “What are you doing? Sneakers won’t help you outrun that bear.” “I don’t need to outrun the bear,” the first guy says. “I just need to outrun you.” A Jewish guy goes into a confession box. “Father O’Malley,” he says, “my name is Emil Cohen. I’m seventy eight years old. Believe it or not, I’m currently involved with a 28 year old girl, and also, on the side, her 19 year old sister. We engage in all manner of pleasure, and in my entire life I’ve never felt better.” “My good man,” says the priest, “I think you’ve come to the wrong place. Why are you telling me?” And the guy goes: “I’m telling everybody!” A Catholic teenager goes to confession, and after confessing to an affair with a girl is told by the priest that he can’t be forgiven unless he reveals who the girl is. “I promised not to tell!” he says. “Was it Mary Patricia, the butcher’s daughter?” the priest asks. “No, and I said I wouldn’t tell.” “Was it Mary Elizabeth, the printer’s daughter?” “No, and I still won’t tell!” ‘Was it Mary Francis, the baker’s daughter?” “No,” says the boy. ‘Well, son,” says the priest, “I have no choice but to excommunicate you for six months.” Outside, the boy’s friends ask what happened. “Well,” he says, “I got six months, but three good leads.”

round-up by stuart renton

Have you noticed that it’s never the worst person to leave in UK TV show public votes? You only have to look back at the previous weeks of X Factor and Strictly to see the painful truth of this. Drunky McAlcohol (AKA Nancy Dell’Olio) is still staggering her way around the dance floor over contestants for whom the room is only spinning when they’re actually dancing. She, who cannot keep her mouth shut when she’s being interviewed by Forsyth or when she’s spilling the beans on her twelvety marriages, has survived three long and gruelling weeks. Either Brucie likes the whiff of gin and tonic, or she’s threatened the judges with the Italian Mafia if they vote her out! And it’s the same with X Factor. Last week, boy band Nu Vibe went over Frankie Cocozza and while they’re both crap, Cocozza is in a league of his own. I freely admit I’m sick of boy bands and wish they would all get sucked off into a black hole (along with Katie Price). While the five members of Nu Vibe have no chemistry and should never have been thrust together, all this bigging up of Cocozza is baffling; the guy has literally no talent and sounds like a bad Rod Stewart tribute act. With any luck he’ll be gone next week leaving the show with some actual talent… Well… I say ‘talent’. Have you seen that member of Rhythmix with the big eyes and the abnormally shaped head? Whenever she sings I can’t look away… I’m sure she’ s telepathically projecting the words ‘worship Satan’ into my head. It’s really quite mesmerising. Check her out on Saturday… just don’t watch too closely or she’ll have you! The evidence that the public is totally brain dead has never been truer when you see Cher Lloyd’s back at the top of the music charts for the second time. I mean once I can blame on Simon Cowell’s publicity machine, but twice, that’s just careless. Doesn’t the saying go: fool me once (shame on Cowell); Fool me twice (get some trousers that fit you arrogant ****!) Well, the buying public must be brain dead indeed to soak up this crap. I mean, who’s buying Cher Lloyd’s album? That question is about as hard to answer as: what existed before the Big Bang (and no I’m not talking about John Barrowman’s regular Saturday night shenanigans). I’ll be answering more mysteries of the universe next week.

It is a privilege as a director to create a visual landscape inviting the audience on a theatrical journey of their music” Brian Burke, Creative Director In the UK & Europe, November 28, will see Il Divo return with their 5th studio album ‘Wicked Game’ including a dramatic reworking of the Chris Isaak classic ‘Wicked Game’, an emotionally beautiful rendering of Roy Orbison’s ‘Crying’ and a heavenly song inspired by Samuel Barber’s ‘Adagio for Strings’ called ‘Dove L’Amore’. Recently named Artist of the Decade at the Classic BRITS. Il Divo are the most successful international musical break-out story of this millennium, selling more than 25 million albums and singlehandedly inventing the classical crossover genre. Their ground-breaking success has brought and pioneered an entirely new sound to vocal music and the group have over 150 gold and platinum awards in 33 countries. Their first four albums, ‘Il Divo’, ‘Ancora’, ‘Siempre’ and ‘The Promise’ – all on Syco - have achieved 50 #1 album chart positions internationally. Il Divo could rest on their laurels. SPIRITUAL

The Academy of Spiritual Knowledge Oxen can be quite persistent and can suffer from self delusion. Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

Chinese Astrology (Part 2) Last week in part one I discussed the first seven Zodiac signs and their corresponding animals. In this article I will do the same for the remaining Zodiac signs. As previously explained there are Chinese Animal signs that correspond with your Western Zodiac sign. This is called the Ming Shu and is believed to date from the year 2637 BC, when the Yellow Emperor Haung Ti first introduced a calendar based on the cycles of the moon. Literally translated Ming Shu means reckoning of the fate. It’s Western Astrology is thought to have originated with the Babylonians but is in fact based on the Oriental system that is many thousands of years older. Scorpio is the Boar - Water Boars are honest, simple and easy going, unlike the secretive Scorpio. The Scorpion tail will sting the lovable Boar. However, both animals’ hearts are permanently fixed on their sleeves. The stingy Scorpion is easily hurt and hides his heart very well. The Boar is the original soft touch and will open his/her home to anyone in need. Others often take advantage. The Boar’s lovable nature will turn the tables on the secretive Scorpio. Love could be in the air for these two. Boars have difficulty with Monkeys and Snakes, both signs are too cunning and complex for the wily Boar.

Aquarius is the Tiger - Water The sign of the Tiger corresponds with the Western sign Aquarius and is ruled by Uranus. A tiger in your house is hard to live with as they are reckless. Aquarius complements the Tiger well. Both the Tiger and Aquarius are fascinated with gadgets. Tigers are sensual and highly emotional. Older Tigers are devoted to their mates and will not stray. Dogs are also a good match as they are probably the only animal sign capable of reasoning with the Tiger. Pisces is the The Rabbit - Water The sign of the Rabbit corresponds with fishy Pisces. They are both sensitive souls. They are creative and both are lucky in love. Pisces will deepen rabbit’s inherently mysterious nature (such people can be psychic). Pisces and Rabbits have the ability to live a happy and well ordered life. The rabbit has an unerring eye for quality and for this reason rabbits make good art collectors and dealers. The Sheep is the best match for the inscrutable Rabbit as both share innate good taste and the love of luxury. Relationships with the loyal Dog or pleasure seeking Boar are happy and productive. I hope you have identified which Chinese sign you are comparable with. Chinese Astrology has given us pleasure over the years but I think I will stick to Western Astrology, much less complex!

Sagittarius is the Rat - Fire Please text/phone for a Psychic reading Associated with the Western astrological sign of 07811632353 or psychicglynis@talktalk.net Sagittarius the Archer, the Rat is ruled by the planet Jupiter. There will be a power struggle between these two signs as they are both ambitious. They are impatient - everything must be done yesterday for these two! Finger nail biting and restlessness are characteristics of the Rat. The Rat is Tel: 0114 269 2537 compatible with the Ox. They will form a sucessful relationship. www.orh.org.uk

NEWS & INFORMATION

EXERCISE BUFFER ON THE HOMEFRONT SAFETY TIPS – VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED Hilary Taylor-Firth, Sheffield 50+

Testing Sheffield’s readiness to provide care and support in a Major Emergency Sheffield’s ‘Major Incident Response Group’ (MIRG) was established in 1990 after the Hillsborough Football Stadium Disaster to make sure that Sheffield is prepared as well as possible in the event of another major emergency. Should the worst happen, the people involved will need to be taken to a place of safety and provided with care and support. Those, who are not injured, will need to be taken to a reception centre (a place of safety) and be provided with shelter, food and other help until they can return home or continue their journey. Those, who have been evacuated from their homes and are not able to stay with family or friends will need to be accommodated until they can return home or be found alternative accommodation. Testing MIRG’s readiness to cope is very important and on Wednesday November 2nd they are holding ‘Exercise Buffer’. They need people like you - members of the public, faith groups, churches, voluntary, community and amateur dramatic groups - to be involved in the exercise, and volunteer to act as people who have been evacuated, or are involved in the emergency. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. For further information or to apply contact Philip Horton, Contingency Planning Manager Tel: 0114 2734504 - 9am – 4.30 pm Monday to Friday Email p.horton@sheffield.gov.uk.

HALF-PRICE COACH TRAVEL TO END http://www.transportforall.org.uk/news/cutsto-concessionary-coach-fares

Millions of pensioners and disabled people are to lose their right to helf-price coach travel in England and Wales from the end of October. The Government pays £17.5 million a year to subsidise the Coach Concessionery Travel Scheme. But from 31 October funding will be axedf under the government spending cuts. You can still qualify for discounted travel up to the end of August next year, so long as you book your journey bvefore 31 October 2011. National Express have written a template for people to write to their MP and this can be found at: http://www.dpac.uk.net/2011/08/ pensioners-and-disabled-to-lose-half-pricecoach-travel-in-sneaky-tory-led-cutbacks/ ) you can sign up to the online petition at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/13748 before 22 November 2011

Friday 29 & Saturday 29 October 2011

A sharp axe, a black hood and a decent chopping block are just three of the items listed as ‘essential’ when English Heritage recruited new guides for its spooky evening tours at Conisbrough Castle later this month, which will be led by a medieval outlaw and an executioner with a dubious moral compass! On Friday 28 and Saturday 29 October, willing visitors put themselves in the hands of the two guides to explore how law and order worked in medieval society, within the atmospheric setting of Conisbrough Castle. The tours take visitors around the castle ruins – already very spooky in low-light conditions – and inside the castle’s iconic keep to hear gruesome tales of crime and punishment, almost guaranteed to curdle the blood! “By modern standards, where even prisoners have more human rights than a medieval peasant, the treatment of anyone guilty of a crime was severe, with simple gossiping punished with a day in the scold’s bridle, and the theft of anything valued at more than two pennies punishable by death!” explains regional events manager, Jon Hogan. “You can imagine that even committing a petty crime could turn a normal person into a fugitive with absolutely nothing to lose – which makes outlaws even more dangerous!” The tour is provided by specialist tour company, Terror Tours, and is not suitable for young children or those of a nervous disposition. As the tour will be outside, visitors are advised to wear warm clothes and stout footwear, as the ground is uneven in places. Each tour lasts around 50 minutes, with tours starting at 6.30pm, 8.00pm and 9.00pm. Tickets are priced at £8.00 for adults and £6.00 for children, with a £2.00 discount per ticket for English Heritage members. Prebooking is strongly recommended as places are limited and selling very fast! Call 01709 863329 for tickets or further details, or visit www.englishheritage.org.uk/conisbrough

TWO great nights to tell you about at Sheffield Trades this week! Friday night saw the final of “Trades’ Got Talent” and the club was packed. Six judges (including me) and thirteen acts, the whole evening was superbly hosted by Sue & Paul. Judging was really difficult – however we finally agreed on the result, and in 3rd place was Mesha Malcolm, 2nd went to Jareth Brownhill,, and the Winner of Trades’ Got Talent 2011 was a superbly talented young lady – Sally Turton! As if that wasn’t enough, another full club turned up on Monday night for a teenage cancer charity event, with the trio Salad Dodgers headlining – Steve Miller, Dave Johnson and big Chad, with a superb vocal and comedy routine. Also appearing were an all-girl trio, and Robyn, Leah and Becky

put on a great singing and dancing show. Thanks to the artists for giving up their time for free, and also thanks to the club and committee for allowing the facilities to be used. I was privileged to be invited along and be asked to write a piece for them. Annette, one of the organisers, informed me that even early in the evening they had ‘Rita, Sue and Bob Too’ has topped the £500 mark! become a classic movie - well, That’s all from me this week folks! at least it has in Yorkshire. The telltale signs are all there: Everyone has a favourite scene, Paul (Rocky Horror) there are endless funny quotes and the performers all went on I so agree with Mr.Kaid of the to appear in so many other wellPhiladelphian W.M.C.In my known tv shows and films. view the C.I.U. has for a long On the 1st of November the classic time existed soley to keep it’s movie is being played out live on paid officials in London in the relative luxury lifestyle they have stage in Barnsley. “It’s not an easy piece to stage” he explains. “Anyone who has seen the movie will know that a car plays a large part in the story and we just couldn’t do it without that! There is a lot of comedy value in the antics that take place in the car and we just wanted to play them to the full. To that end we’re putting a real car on stage.” The show is set in the 80’s and is a blend of social comment and hilarious comedy antics, as Bob (Jimmy Carol) takes advantage of his two babysitters on a drive home one night. A torrid affair begins, with secret meetings among the three, much to the disapproval of their families and Bob’s longsuffering wife Michelle. The show is billed as ‘Raw, Rude and Riotously funny’ and it certainly won’t disappoint on that score. It must be noted, however, that the show is not for the faint-hearted! The antics of Bob and the girls are nothing short of outrageous and, as those who have seen the film will know, very very funny to boot. The role of Sue’s drunken Dad is played by Glyn Davies, former frontman of Yorkshire showband ‘Men’s Club’ who is set to become

To let patients know what they can expect from Radio Nightingale we produce a variety of printed materials which are distributed around the hospital and available from outside our studio on level B of the hospital. One of these is our quarterly information booklet which includes news about the station and fundraising activities along with programme details. Production of this is made possible by the local businesses who place adverts in the publication. Work is underway on preparing for print on the Autumn edition of the booklet but there are still a couple of spaces available for advertisements, which we need to fill to cover the costs of printing. If you run a local business and would like to include your details in this professionally produced publication please get in touch with us as soon as possible. The booklet is distributed around the hospital so passes your message to a variety of people. Take the opportunity to promote yourself in this low-cost advertising medium and be satisfied in the knowledge that you are supporting a local charity at the same time. Give me a call on 01709 304244 to discuss how your business can support Radio Nightingale. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. ACCIDENTS WILL HAPPEN MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

Those were the words singer Elvis Costello sang about 30 years ago, and oh how they do happen. Hardly ever does a week go past without a cracked glass in our kitchen, a burn from the iron or a broken plate. The other day I mentioned on the show a survey that’s taken place rating the most frequent small injuries that happen in our homes. It ranged from getting your finger stuck in a car door to hurting yourself getting dressed or undressed. I know zippers can be a nightmare for men and women, especially when the trousers are getting tight and there’s something in the way. We had lots of calls suggesting some of those things we hurt ourselves with. For instance, Stephen in Edlington, Doncaster mentioned the razor. I’ve often had to dive for the toilet roll and ended up coming to work with blotches all over my face. Susan suggested the oven. Very frequently I’ve gone to pull something out and forgot to put oven gloves on first, sending me through the roof. We also had corned beef tins, especially when you can’t use the key attachment to get the thing open and then have to make do with the can opener. The most interesting aspect to come from the research though, I thought, was that as many as 1 in every 3 of us admit to accidently injuring our partners when the accidents happen. It could be falling off a ladder and knocking your wife out in the fall, I suppose, or accidentally strangling each other with the plug cable from the kettle. Join me for more fun and games and great songs to wake up with as we play the best of the 60’s, 70’s and more right now on Magic AM.

STUDENTS AND CLUBS CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

Last week I began a discussion about how students might be linked to local working men’s clubs, giving some examples of those who have been interested enough to make short films about them or write about local ones for their dissertations. It is not the case that all youth have switched off from clubland- there is interest out there that can be encouraged by clubs themselves. Those fortunate enough to be sited near universities, and that probably adds up to quite a few, or in residential areas popular with students, can certainly made some moves into the academic world. Some are already doing that by advertising their games and sports facilities as well as the bars. Having an up and running website helps on that score. Snooker and darts remain popular with young men, and women, and some students are not averse to a drink or two! Many clubs have great stages and rooms that are now underused and offering these out to budding student bands and their followers or drama groups, is another way of bringing people in. Having as student night is another way of bringing in new faces and income and stocking different types of real ale has also proven to be popular. Of course club committees will have to agree on some leeway about the ‘member’s only’ rule on a temporary basis but if students start using the club and see the facilities offered and their good value, they may consider becoming members. This is happening in some university towns and cities but a certain amount of breaking down of barriers has to take place. It’s a case of catching them young, like clubs used to do. Perhaps the student body may seem a different group to what clubs used to attract but there are no longer legions of local lads and lasses in apprenticeships and full time employment. Pattern of work and leisure for everyone have changed rapidly and the ongoing economic troubles means that everyone is looking around for good value. Clubs are good value and have great facilities that could be used sometimes by students and their input, socially and economically, could be very welcome. Another consideration is having students working on the barstaff. They not only earn a bit of extra cash but learn a lot about clubs and sometimes strike up good relationships with the members that last far beyond their university life.

REVIEW: CRIBS DJ SET by KT Evans

REVIEW: RISE TO REMAIN by KT Evans

Named one of the biggest cult bands to stem out of the UK indie scene, Ross and Gary Jarman, a.k.a. two thirds of Wakefield’s The Cribs brought their sought after DJing skills to Sheffield’s new Viper Rooms last week. Having been rescheduled from a previous date last month, the two hundred strong audience were clearly in it from the word ‘go’, not only creating an electric vibe, but a uptempo atmosphere to match. Comprising their set from tracks across the whole musical spectrum, it wasn’t unusual to hear The Buzzcocks followed by The Strokes or MGMT… hell these guys sure have got a varied music taste, all aiding the versatility of the whole evening. Although the night itself, Neighbourhood, prides on being the only mid week alternative / indie night around in Sheffield, tracks played weren’t strictly set to these guide lines, allowing for a set not narrowed down to stereotypes. Although only in its first weeks of opening as a new venue on Sheffield’s Carver Street, the downstairs Viper Rooms Club held the anticipated event, a certified bang on set-up for the night. Harbouring a certain underground feel with its raw brick walls and low ceilings, this all worked to The Cribs favour, an overall reflection of the whole ethos omitted by the three piece. Although coming on slightly later than anticipated, their set was perfectly suited to the Steel City masses, with aspects for everyone to enjoy. Forming in 2001, The Cribs have gained vast support both in and around the UK with their uptempo, indie-rock musical style. With four studio albums under the belt, their latest ‘Ignore The Ignorant’ in 2009 peaking at number nine in the UK album charts, the Wakefield three piece have been somewhat off the radar the past few years, however are set for a new album release in early 2012. Recently supporting fellow Leeds band Kaiser Chiefs at Kirkstall Abbey back in September, The Cribs clearly demonstrated that although somewhat slipping out of the public eye in terms of record releases, they sure as hell have still got what it takes to put on first rate live performances. Gracing main stage festivals across the globe, The Cribs are confident stage performers, aswell as behind the decks as demonstrated in Sheffield’s Viper Rooms. Neighbourhood Club is held at The Viper Rooms every Wednesday, £4 admission or £3 guest list. 18+. This week will see the turn of The babyshambles DJ set, with Reverend And The Makers to follow the week after. See the venues facebook page for full line up and details.

With a UK headline tour, countless festival appearances and front cover spreads in rock music magazines across an international scale, London based Rise To Remain are rapidly hyping up metal fans from around the world. Bringing their fierce live show to Sheffield’s O2 Academy on Monday 19th September, after a cracking slot at Sonisphere Festival 2011 and various others around the country, it’s pretty safe to say…Rise to Remain well and truly smashed it big style! Heating up the audience before the main event were Scottish based rockers, Bleed From Within, who went above and beyond any support bands primary roles. Tearing up the stage with their ear splitting performance, front man Scott Kennedy played the half packed venue to his advantage… stage diving, amp clambering, you name it to induce a full-on, energetic performance. More than worthy of their own headline tour, Bleed Form Within will no doubt have a few more Steel City supporters added to their collection. Although a tough act to follow, if Rise To Remain owned the stage, Bleed From Within simply rented if off of them. Bolstering onto the stage with bucket loads of charisma and a voice their enough to match, Austin Dickenson made like the Messiah to induce a legendary performance. Having released their debut album, ‘City of Vultures’ back in September, the set largely comprised of tracks from this, a nod in the direction to experimental metal verses full on hard-core mayhem. Achieving top critical acclaim from Front Magazine who rewarded the album 5/5, tracks such as ‘God Can Bleed’ and ‘We Will Last Forever’ have a certain eeriness about them, aiding the adrenaline packed vibe of the night. ‘It’s been received excellently, we were all really surprised…you love music you create,’ commented Austin about the release. ‘(City Of Vultures) took the best part of five months to record and about a year to record. Because it is our debut album, we went a little bit mental to get it perfect. But it’s a real reflection of what we’re about…we’re all really really into it.’ The climax of the night came with the performance of title track off the album, City of Vultures, a decibel cranking hit combining both powerful lyrics in collaboration with intricate rhythmic patterns. Played towards the end of the hour long set, this resulted in one hell of a stage dive, there enough involving the whole of the witnessing audience…and who said metal was DEAD??!

Angler’s Corner Racing Form by Clint Walker

This week I’m going to start by talking about politics; not the boring thing that the so called educated gentry would have us believe is essential to running the country, but angling politics, jealousy and kudos. As you may know, I’ve recently been appointed as a ‘Media Manager’ for Pallatrax, a bait and tackle company in Devon. This appears to have upset one or two (one specifically!) who are already involved, and under the impression that they are irreplaceable and contribute huge amounts to the publicity of the brand. Not so; a quick picture on Facebook or a mention on Twitter doesn’t count as far as I’m concerned, so when I’ve pushed up Facebook traffic by over 11,000% in just four weeks, and trebled the amount of Twitter followers, then I think I’m doing what I have been employed for.....The company website (www.pallatrax.co.uk if you’re interested) has also seen traffic rise considerably, although the statistics are more difficult to interpret. Those upset are ‘field testers’; to my mind a worthy field tester gives some tangible return in exchange for reduced prices when ordering tackle and bait, and that return is brand or product exposure. I’ve been involved in angling media for less than three years and I’ve already seen a huge variation in the skills and attributes of some who seek to call themselves ‘field testers’.....Many of the ‘disaffected’ are younger anglers who see the likes of Matt Hayes, Martin Bowler and other celebrity contributors who actually work at it, and have caught notable fish and are prepared to share their stories, thoughts and ideas, and consider themselves an equal, therefore should be seen as such; I’m even aware of an angler who has asked to be paid by the company to go fishing!!! I mean, come on......Reward comes from return, not the other way around. It’s not just at Pallatrax though; I read many forums as I’m sure you perhaps do and I’ve seen a thread about a certain well known Robin to Korda’s Batman. I don’t know the chap involved on a personal level, however I am aware of his dedication to the company, his effort and the amount of time he puts in to what he does. I may not agree with everything he writes or shows on television, but I respect his opinion and his right to have it, and he seems a thoroughly nice chap. To me, he deserves every reward for the brand exposure which results from what he does, but to others, well; let’s just say that the language used to portray the green eyed monster need not be repeated! Why is this? What is it that drives other anglers to such extremes that they decry a fellow angler who just happens to have put more effort in or made the best of their luck and contacts? The angling media would be very dull if we all agreed on everything and good writers try to elicit a response from the reader, but why, with the advent of the internet forum, must it get so nasty?? I’ll leave you to work it out, because I have no idea what changes an angler into an idiot!

It looks like being another excellent day’s racing on Saturday. The big race of the day is the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster, a Group 1 event for 2yos over the straight mile. However, Newbury also presents some very attractive racing and Aintree hosts a very interesting chase where there could be important clues for the rest of the NH season. Doncaster 2.00. This opening TV race is a 5 furlongs Class 2 handicap. It has all the hallmarks of one of those “whose turn is it today chaps?” races and as a result I could easily imagine anyone of a dozen winning. These are really tricky to predict as over the fast five at Doncaster so much depends on a good start, luck in running and being on top form. Judge ‘N’ Jury has had a fairly good time of late and has my top speed figure so he has to go on the shortlist. The suggestion however is Barney McGrew who ran really well a fortnight ago at York and looks to be reaching peak form just now. He is second in my ratings but only has a point to find on Judge ‘N’ Jury. Others with good chances and not far behind in my ratings are: Just For Mary; Fathom Five; Ginger Ted; and Cheveton. 2.30. This is a 6 furlongs Listed event that brings together several improving types in a competitive race. At the head of my estimation is the fast progressing pair of Ballesteros and Billy Ray Valentine with preference being for the first named Ballesteros who won a very competitive race at Haydock last week where he just beat Mince. I reckon that this form line should stand the test of future racing. If Ballesteros doesn’t run then the reserve selection is Billy Ray Valentine. Of the others I like the chances of Mehdi, Parc de Launay, Miss Lahar, Accession and Son du Silence. 3.00. The Racing Post Trophy brings together some top juveniles with four entries from Aidan O’Brien,

Newbury 2.15. The Horris Hill Stakes - Group 3 contest over 7 furlongs. The shortlist here comprises: Fulbright; Rugged Cross; Mehdi; Tell Dad; Talwar, Diamondhead, Swing Along and Red Art. I have little hesitation in selecting Henry Candy’s Rugged Cross after his performance at York where he defeated Storming Bernard readily by upwards of two lengths and in a good time for the conditions. 2.45. This 12 furlong Group 3 contest used to be called the St Simon Stakes but now goes under the name of Worthington’s Champion Shield Stakes. The improving 3yos Barbican and Beaten Up, who are both on a roll at present, might take some stopping but I am going for another 3yo in John Gosden’s Colombian who I think might have more to offer than he has shown so far. Of the rest it might pay not to totally discount Allied Powers, Harris Tweed and Cracking Lass. 3.15. The Radley Stakes – a Listed event over 7 furlongs for 2yo fillies. The one I like best here is Tom Dascombe’s Basantee, a winner last time out over this distance at Haydock. Admittedly that was on heavy ground and she may well meet different underfoot conditions here but I was quite taken with her performance that day and think she can follow up here. Two other last time out winners, Self Centred and Serene Oasis head the list of dangers, closely followed by Lemon Rock, French Quebec and Pimpernel. There are five once-raced winners in the field also so it is not going to be a cakewalk for the selection but I am hoping that her experience will be the telling factor. 3.45 In the concluding Totescoop6 HBLB Handicap – a 10 furlong contest – there are many in with decent chances. At this distance I very marginally prefer Walter Swinburn’s Absinthe over one of

my favourites Michael Attwater’s Ramona Chase. However both need some above them in the handicap to drop out before being certain of a run. Others that would have good chances if getting into the race are: Kirthill; Viva Vettori; Oceanway; and Dick Doughtywylie while another with a good chance and certain of a run, if connections so choose, is Prompte Aintree 3.30. Only one race from this venue but it promises to be a cracker. The Betfred Monet’s Garden Old Roan Chase is a Grade 2 Limited Handicap over two and a half miles. Heading the weights is one this sphere’s stars Master Minded. This race looks ideal for him as he prepares for the season ahead. However, Albertas Run, Finger Onthe Pulse, Rio Gael and Noble Alan will all seek to test him thoroughly but one I like best, and one that I’m hoping for big things from this year, is Charlie Mann’s Fine Parchment, who will also find this trip and track to his liking. Selection Summary: Doncaster: 2.00 Barney McGrew 2.30 Ballesteros 3.00 Learn Newbury: 2.15 Rugged Cross 2.45 Colombian 3.15 Basantee 3.45 Absinthe Aintree: 3.30 Fine Parchment Good Luck!

one from Jim Bolger and one each from Godolphin, John Gosden, Roger Varian and Jeremy Noseda. Although Aidan O’Brien’s Camelot is the current ante post favourite my suggestion is another of his, Learn, who admittedly has only won a maiden so far but did so by fivelengths and could be unexposed. If he doesn’t run then the Ballydoyle maestro may rely on Daddy Long Legs who has a Group 2 win on his CV already – more than any of the others of whom the best would seem to be Talwar who has run in Group 1 races before – experience that could be very valuable here. John Gosden’s Fencing and Godolphin’s Encke appeal most of the remainder.

MILLERS NEWS 2011/12 A NIGHT TO FORGET MATCH REPORT www.themillers.co.uk

Rotherham United had a night to forget going down 5-2 against Bristol Rovers. Goals from Jason Taylor and Danny Schofield set the Millers on their way to a comeback from 3-0 down, but following a debut red card for Guy Branston, they conceded another two to make it back-to-back defeats on the road. Andy Scott made three changes to the side, with Gareth Evans joining new recruits Branston and Jon Harley in the side. A throw-in down the Millers left was flicked inside by Alex Revell, and the returning Evans fired just over Scott Bevan’s bar from the edge of the area. The home side’s first chance came on eight minutes when Matt Harrold crossed from the left, but Lee Brown could only divert his header wide. However, on 10 minutes it was Bristol Rovers who made the breakthrough; the Millers failed to clear a cross from the left, and Scott McGleish turned Craig Stanley’s effort past Andy Warrington from close range. Brown came within inches of netting his second with 17 minutes on the watch; rifling in an effort from 30 yards that beat Warrington, but couldn’t beat the bar. A slight change of shape for the Millers and they were in the ascendancy. Harley found space on the left allowing him to cross, but Sawyer was on hand to clear before Revell could get a shot away. Attacking down the right, Grabban held the ball up well before laying off for Mullins who burst forward from full-back, but as he fired across goal, nobody was able to get a touch, and the ball was cleared. Within a minute, Mullins was in action at the other end. Scott Rendell burst into the area, before being challenged by the defender, and referee Woolmer awarded a penalty. McGleish stepped up and doubled his tally on 29 minutes. It got worse for Rotherham on the half-hour mark. Captain Matt Gill swung in a free-kick from the left, and Bolger stretched at the far post to head back past Warrington and put the Pirates three up.

The Millers were given a lifeline on 37 minutes thanks to a fine finish by Jason Taylor. Grabban again the creator from the right crossing low to the edge of the area, where the midfielder struck first time low and hard past Bevan. Evans then tried his luck from a similar position, but his shot on the turn was just over. The final half-chance of the half came from Grabban in the area; the striker tried to wriggle free on the right, but couldn’t get his shot on target. The Millers started the second-half well, with Harley bursting through the Rovers midfield before being felled; Schofield picked up on the lose ball and danced through the defence, but his shot from the left was blocked by Bolger in the six-yard box. The Millers failed to make their bright start pay and on 50 minutes Harrold was put through, and got a toe to the ball, only for Warrington to race out and smother. 52 minutes in and the comeback took a huge leap forward for Rotherham. Harley’s free-kick was initially cleared, but only as far as Schofield, who 20 yards out curled the ball left-footed inside the far post. Rotherham’s evening then took a turn for the worse on 56 minutes. Branston’s touch took the ball away from him and he lunged into a tackle on Stuart Campbell, immediately seeing red in the process. From the resulting free-kick, Harrison headed clear, but the lively Brown finally got his goal, volleying low past Warrington from 20 yards. Warrington was on hand 69 minutes in to prevent a fifth, sprawling across goal to keep out Harrold’s header from another dangerous Gill free-kick. A quick free-kick by the Millers with just under 10 minutes remaining forced a save from Bevan, as substitute Marcus Marshall ran down the right before crossing for Mullins, who was denied. With just three minutes remaining, Rovers grabbed a fifth in extraordinary style. Anyinsah, introduced as a substitute in the second-half, cut in from the right before firing a dipping cross, that looped over Warrington and nestled in the goal, breaking the net in the process. A short inspection by the referee is all that was needed, before pointing to the centre spot and confirming another defeat for the Millers.

ROVERS NEWS 2011/12 SAUNDERS AND ROVERS LOSE OUT IN LOCAL DERBY CLASH MATCH REPORT www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk

The Rovers line-up included two loan players, Chris Kirkland in goal from Wigan Athletic and Herita Ilunga at left back from West Ham United, for the game against Leeds United in front of the Sky Sports cameras. Making way for them were Neil Sullivan, who dropped to the bench and Shelton Martis, injured. The Leeds team was unchanged from their last game against Portsmouth. The Rovers defended the South Stand end in the first half. The visitors got the game underway, with the early minutes spent sounding each other out. It was the tenth minute before the first meaningful action in the goal area. Keogh went down the Leeds right to the byline and hit a low cross to the near post where McCormack tried some fancy footwork to turn it into the net under challenge by Friend. The ball went wide. The next minute had Sharp appealing for a penalty when he went down in the area but the referee wasn’t interested. Then a free kick to the Rovers on their right was mis-punched out by Lonergan for a corner to the Rovers. In the 20th minute, Friend was penalised near the corner flag on the Leeds right. Snodgrass placed the ball into the penalty area where PUGH hammered into the net from 15yards. The visitors were enjoying a majority of the possession at this stage, with most of the play in midfield. Just before the half hour, Sharp, on the Rovers right, passed inside to Gillett but he sliced well wide from just outside the penalty area. In the 37th minute Leeds were awarded a free kick about 35yards out. McCormack hit it hard and low

through the wall but Kirkland saved well. Minutes later a cross from O’Connor, on the Rovers right was headed wide by Parkin. The half time whistle went on a first half in which neither keeper had been unduly troubled but Leeds had a one goal lead. The Rovers got the second half underway and pressed forward, with a corner the only result of their efforts. Then, in the 51st minute, Leeds moved forward with some man-to-man passing. The ball came to McCORMACK about 12yards out and an overhead kick hit the back of the Rovers net giving the visitors a two-goal lead. The visitors were well on top at this stage and added another in the 63rd minute when a corner was met by LEES, who rose higher than anybody else to head firmly into the net. Continuing to press Leeds won two further corners in the next five minutes but they were successfully defended. The Rovers gradually got back into the game and Lonergen was injured saving from Hayter in a goalmouth melee. A corner to the Rovers came to nothing but they were trying hard to get something from the game. Then in the 83rd minute, Keogh should have added a fourth for the visitors but hit the bar from close range with only Kirkland to beat. The match then ran down to it’s close, with the Rovers well beaten by three clear goals. ROVERS - Chris Kirkland; James O’Connor, George Friend,Richard Naylor, Herita Ilunga; James Coppinger. Gary Megson was full of praise for the way in which his Owls side came back from 2-0 down to post a deserved point against Sheffield United. Two goals in the last eight minutes from Chris O’Grady and Gary Madine gave the Owls a share of the spoils in the fiercely contested Steel City derby. And Megson urged his players on at half time, insisting that if Wednesday scored first after the break, they would not leave S2 empty handed. He said: “I didn’t get upset at half time because I thought we were playing really well. We had ten shots to their two but their two went in. “I said to them if you score the next goal, you will not lose. It’s not being wise after the evnt because I genuinely felt that would be the case. “I thought we played really well and it’s as good as we’ve played in recent weeks. “But even if we had lost the game, it wouldn’t have mattered that we had most of the possession because they would have scored more goals. Football matches are about scoring goals.” Megson also had words of praise for the magnificent travelling contingent across the city at Bramall Lane. The 4,300 strong army of Wednesdayites were overjoyed when the second Owls goal went in. Megson said: “It was nothing less than the fans deserved. I said to the players before the game that today you will find out what playing for Sheffield Wednesday is all about. “Our supporters are so loud at times, it was like being back at Hillsborough. I thought they were absolutely magnificent.”

Sheffield Wednesday are delighted to hail the Steel City derby beam back at Hillsborough on Sunday as a huge success. With the visiting allocation at Bramall Lane of 4,300 tickets snapped up inside two days, the Owls were able to facilitate the beam back live from S2 on three big screens, and Wednesdayites supported the move in their droves. Almost 11,000 fans packed the South Stand at Hillsborough, giving the Owls the second highest attendance in League 1 this weekend - without the team being present! In addition, to add to the occasion, Wednesday produced an official matchday programme - the first in the club’s history for an away fixture - which completely sold out ahead of the pulsating 2-2 derby draw. The whole event was incident-free and Owls fans went home happy following the team’s dramatic

AUCTION SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Sheffield Wednesday are pleased to announce that the shirts worn by the players at Sunday’s Steel City derby are up for auction, with the proceeds going to charity. All 12 Owls players who featured on the pitch during the thrilling 2-2 draw at Bramall Lane have signed their shirts, which are now up for sale on auction site eBay. As part of the Supporting Sheffield initiative, backed by both Wednesday and United as well as the clubs’ joint sponsors Westfield Health and Gilders, all profits from the auction will go to three local charities - Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, the Cavendish Centre and The Children’s Hospital Charity. Wednesday chairman Milan Mandaric said: “Everyone knows I haven’t been in this city for too long, but in the short time I have been here I know that the Sheffield people are special. To see that first hand at my first Sheffield derby was a truly memorable experience and we as a club are delighted to support the three city charities.”

ALL SQUARE AS BLADES LOSE TWO GOAL LEAD BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

The Blades allowed a two-goal lead to slip away as the 113th Steel City league derby ended all square. Stephen Quinn emulated his brother Alan by scoring a Sheffield derby to open the scoring and Ched Evans added a second on 20 minutes. However, two goals in the final ten minutes, from Chris O’Grady and Gary Madine secured a draw. The stalemate keeps Blades well ahead in overall league clashes with the S6 crew, winning 42 to Wednesday’s 35. Wilson left new signings Clarke and Phillips - signed on Friday on loan from Blackpool - on the bench but made three changes from the last league game. Williams, Montgomery and Cresswell were all recalled at the expence of Doyle, Jean-Francois and Porter, with the latter two on the bench. Wednesday won the toss, forcing United to kick towards the Kop in the first half, and the home side lined up in a usual 4-4-2 formation with Cresswell partnering Evans up top. Of course, the early moments were frantic. The first action to get the crowd on their feet was an Evans cross that saw Johnson and Williamson collide but United’s appeals for a penalty were waved away. Maguire did well to cut out an O’Connor pass, destined for Madine, whilst Wednesday used the long throw of Marshall a couple of times in the opening ten minutes. United weathered the onslaught and hit back by taking the lead with the first serious test of Wednesday’s defence. McDonald fed Evans on the right channel and his low cross was deflected onto his own post by Jones and QUINN, belting in, managed to adjust his body brilliantly to direct the rebound into the roof of the net. The Irishman would have been delighted that Wednesday had turned the action around in the first half because he was in an ideal position to celebrate with a packed Kop. Wednesday came close to a leveller from a free-kick when Madine’s header was spilled by Simonsen right at the feet of O’Grady but the United goalkeeper recovered to deflect the close-range effort onto his left post. And it was about a minute later that O’Grady was made to pay as the Blades grabbed a second. From Williamson’s free-kick, EVANS sneaked in front of his marker and planted his header home at the near post, taking full advantage of Bywater being out of position. Cresswell’s header from Williamson’s corner was straight at the Wednesday goalkeeper soon after, whilst moments later, for the visitors, O’Connor headed over and then Williams did well to block an O’Grady volley. On 28 minutes, Marshall’s shot was

deflected onto the top of the crossbar and over by Montgomery, positioned in front of Simonsen, whilst both sides then exchanged bookings - Buxton for Wednesday and Cresswell for United.

Naturally the pace slowed but as halftime approached the temperature rose once more. Batth managed to miss the target from inside the six-yard box when he met Marshall’s corner and in the three-minutes of injury-time United were on top but the home side were unable to add to the two-goal advantage before the whistle was blown for the break. Megson introduced a second Johnson, Jermaine, for the start of the second half and the replacement was involved as Wednesday won a couple of free-kicks in dangerous areas but they were repelled. Evans was booked following an aerial challenge with Lines and from the resulting free-kick Marshall fired over the crossbar. Williamson was also cautioned after the second flashpoint of the half around the 65-minute mark. Madine headed over a Marshall cross at the back post and boss Wilson responded to the pressure from the visitors by throwing on extra attacking intent in the shape of debutant Phillips. As the game approached the final 15 minutes, Collins did well to block an effort from Madine and Marshall then cut in from the left and fired well over the crossbar with options to pass. Quinn cleared up an O’Grady cross with Johnson in a decent position but the Owls gave themselves a lifeline with just under ten minutes to go. From Marshall’s cross, Maguire could not get enough purchase on a clearance and following a Jones header, O’GRADY nipped in ahead of Simonsen. Porter was introduced but the goal buoyed the Wednesdayites and with their next serious attack, they levelled. It was full of controversy and confusion but it was a bitter pill for United. Semedo’s punt into a crowded box saw Simonsen unable to gather and MADINE was credited with a goal although McDonald or another Blade may have had the final touch as they tried to keep the ball out. Simonsen’s protests that he was fouled fell on deaf ears with referee Oliver. In four minutes of injury-time the only chance of note also fell to the visitors but a Jones header from Marshall’s cross was saved by Simonsen. After the final whistle Wednesday celebrated like they had won the fixture but Monday’s papers will confirm that both sides took a point apiece.

United completed a double loan signing ahead of Sunday’s Steel City derby. Blackpool duo Matty Phillips and Billy Clarke have penned initial onemonth loans with the Blades, which will see them stay at Bramall Lane until next month. Phillips, 20, who has represented England at U19 and U20 level, signed for the Tangerines in on transfer deadline day in August 2010 for a fee of £350,000, a fee that could eventually rise to £700,000. The Aylesbury-born player made an instant impact at Bloomfield Road scoring seconds into his debut in the 2-1 defeat against Blackburn Rovers. The pacey winger, who made 78 appearances for Wycombe Wanderers ,where he had been since the age of eight, was a regular for the Chairboys in their promotion winning team from League Two in the 2008/09 season, where he played on both the right and left flank. On his move to the Lane he said: “It is a massive club and this is a great opportunity for me. I want to play football and hopefully my performances can help the team.” Meanwhile, Clarke, 23, has now fully recovered from a serious knee injury that saw him miss the entire 2010/11 campaign, but this term he has made eight appearances, largely from the substitute bench. Clarke, who began his career as a trainee at Ipswich Town, enjoyed prolific loan stints at Darlington, Northampton Town and notably Brentford, before joining the Seasiders in July 2009. He is also relishing the opportunity of playing regular first-team football with United: “Sheffield United is obviously a big club so it is good to be here and hopefully I can get plenty of games under my belt.” Blackpool boss Ian Holloway commented: “I’ve told Danny Wilson he can have them for 28 days and if it goes well I’ll get my blokes flying back. Clarke and Phillips are 23 and 20 and I feel they will be very exciting for this club. They are still learning. “I’m delighted to have them but with the expectancy of the fans, I am not sure that if they went through on goal and missed it would help them. “So I’m going to make sure they get used to it somewhere else, go and do it again, and Sheffield United seems to be perfect for them.” Phillips will wear United’s number 32 shirt, whilst Clarke has been handed the 26 shirt.

Danny Wilson was left feeling very frustrated after the Blades conceded two late goals in the Steel City derby at Bramall Lane. The Blades manager felt aggrieved at the late equaliser, which was credited to Gary Madine, which came after a controversial challenge on goalkeeper Steve Simonsen. “We felt the decision to allow their second to stand was very difficult to understand. The frustration is that the referee did see it and seemed to lift his whistle to his mouth but then didn’t blow up. Any goal to lose late on is a frustration, of course it is, but when it is derby game you feel it that bit more.” Goals from Stephen Quinn and Ched Evans had put the Blades two up in the first half and talking about the game, Wilson went on say: “It was a very hard, physical game and I was very pleased with the way we came through it. We crafted two good goals, which we took really well; we certainly were good value for our lead. On the actual day itself, the Blades boss was very impressed with atmosphere. “It has been a fantastic occasion, the crowd have been brilliant, and as for the game, it has had incidents and goals and all that you would expect of a game like this. “We feel disappointed to have conceded goals the way we have late on, but we are sure that if we play that well and with that much passion for the remainder of the season then we won’t be too far off at the end. “ The Blades are next in action at Preston North End on Wednesday with a 7.45pm kick-off for the game at Deepdale.
