COUNTDOWN TO SHEFFIELDʼS FIRST TESCO EXTRA BEGINS Sheffield’s first Tesco Extra store is set to open in just two weeks’ time. The new store, which will open on Savile Street on Monday 31st October, has created 300 jobs and marks a large investment in Sheffield from Tesco. The Store Manager, Mark Collings, recently received the keys to the new store and final preparations are now well underway. Mark is excited about what the new supermarket can bring to Sheffield. Mark said: “It is fantastic to be involved in the opening of the first Tesco Extra in Sheffield. We felt that it was time to bring a larger store, with more choice and range, to the

city. Following customer feedback, we believe that providing a Tesco Extra will improve the shopping experience for residents. “The creation of the new store has not only allowed us to increase the level of choice we can offer the residents of Sheffield but we have also formed a great relationship with Sheffield Job Centre Plus and Sheffield College.” The partnership agreement with Sheffield Job Centre Plus and Sheffield College ensured that local jobs were given to local people. Tesco agreed to offer 50 per cent of new jobs to those applying though the partnership. Around 1,000 people applied for

jobs at the store though the partnership and almost 700 applicants were interviewed. Job seekers could also apply via a recruitment website, which received a similar response and as a result over 700 people were interviewed. Mark added: “We are committed to continuing to work with local community groups to ensure that those who were not successful in gaining employment this time have opportunities to do so in the future.” The new store will open for the first time on Monday 31st October at 8am and staff will host an official opening ceremony

Domestic & Commercial Flooring

for customers and launch guests later that day at 10am. Mark said: “So far the creation of this store has been about working with the local community and we fully intend to continue doing. so once the store is open. The launch ceremony will include a £1,000 charity donation and complimentary refreshments for our new customers. My team and I look forward to welcoming shoppers into the new store.” The new store will offer a selection of fresh counters, serving meat and fish, a range of fruit and vegetables and dairy products. Non-food ranges

will include clothing, toys, health and beauty products, electricals, DVDs, books and CDs. There will also be a range of services including a Tesco Direct service, a café, a phone shop and a petrol station. Following the opening day

the store will open at 6am on Monday, for 24 hours until midnight on Saturday. The store will be open from 11am until 5pm on Sunday. The petrol station facilities will be available 24 hours a day.

COMPETITION CELEBRATE THE BEST OF YORKSHIRE WITH THIS HUMOROUS LOOK AT ITS NATIONAL DISH The Yorkshire Pudding is of course the White Rose County’s greatest culinary export, but in the vivid imaginations of the ‘Bard of Barnsley’ Ian McMillan and cartoonist Tony Husband, the Yorkshire Pudding has 101 other uses — everything from a shot putt and sink scourer, to a dog basket and bedwarmer (only when fresh from the oven, of course) — as they reveal in their new book 101 Uses for a Yorkshire Pudding, published by Dalesman on 1st October. Ian and Tony also show how a Yorkshire Pudding saved the life of a First World War soldier; remember the lyrics to ‘The Yorkshire Pudding Song’ from the

Gershwin musical Almost Midnight in Wakefield; uncover lost footage from the horror film classic Frankenstein of the Puddings; find out why the rock band The Puds are best listened to on an iPud; and realise the truth of the proverb ‘A Pudding on the plate is worth three in the tin’. Celebrate the best of Yorkshire in this humorous look at its national dish. 101 Uses for a Yorkshire Pudding by Ian McMillan & Tony Husband is published byDalesman on 1st October, £4.99 paperback, ISBN 978-1-85568-293-1 We have kindly been given 5 copies of ‘101 Uses for a Yorkshire Pudding’ to give away to lucky readers. Copley’s Column

This last week has been amazing for a variety of reasons, the most important being the capture and killing of the disgusting torturous Colonel Ghaddafi, who has raped and plundered Libya for the past four decades. The exultant joy of the Libyan populace was broadcast worldwide as well as graphic images of the blood drenched corpse of this odious tyrant. After the elimination of him as well as that of Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and his right hand enforcer, Chemical Ali, let this be a stark warning to any other up and coming pursuers of wealth and power by bullying tactics, the only certain ending is death. Whilst on the subject of killing, the Sunday afternoon slaying of Manchester United by their old enemy Manchester City was most entertaining with City handing o ut a six goals to one thrashing. The look on the face of United manager after the game was a joy to behold (I am not over enamoured with him) and I would like to bet that there will have been a few hairdryers flying around the dressing room after the game. It will have been a long journey home for the United supporters, but then again it always is as the majority do not live in Manchester. This fabulous game was followed by the followed by another very exciting game, the London derby between Chelsea and Neil Warnock’s Queens Park Rangers. In a match that Chelsea were expected to win, this highly physical game saw Chelsea having two players sent off, and Queens Park Rangers winning the game with the only goal. My afternoon was only spoilt by yet another disappointing display by the England cricket team in India. Notwithstanding, this one afternoon has made my Sky subscription good value for money. On the local football front, it has been a mixed week for Sheffield United fans, who

were given a boost of a four goals to two win away at in form Preston North End after their disappointment of being unable to keep a two goal lead against Sheffield Wednesday, only to suffer the same fate against lowly Leyton Orient, who played most of the game with a man short after having one of their players sent off. United scored late in the game, only to concede a late equaliser, again through some pretty poor defending, although it must be said the goal was timed at 90+6 mins, when only five minutes of added time was signalled. Unless manager, Danny Wilson can quickly remedy these defensive lapses, his team will be staring relegation in the face. On the other hand, (did I really write that?) Sheffield Wednesday continued their fantastic home form, beating Colchester United by two goals to nil, moving them up the table to third position in Division One, and continuation of this outstanding form will surely see them promoted at the end of the season to the Championship. The arrival of owner Milan Mandaric and the appointment of Gary Megson as manager is now bearing fruit. Russ Dennett is holidaying in Tuscany, and his regular open mic night on Tuesday night was ably hosted by Brendan Garretty, with notable contributions, amongst others by Marvin White, Jon Whynne, Sean Taylor, and the lovely Hannah Rachael Aram, who I really like when she performs covers of Adele. I am really looking forward to Thursday night, when I shall be attending the highly prestigious Mercury Awards presentation night at Crookes Club. At the time of writing, I understand there are a few tickets left. The charity night at the Forest Showbar for Norman’s cat shelter was well attended and raised over four hundred pounds. Gary Phillips gave his usual competent performance.

Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS

An old hillbilly farmer had a wife who nagged him unmercifully. From morning till night (and sometimes later), she was always complaining about something. The only time he got any relief was when he was out plowing with his old mule. He tried to plow a lot. One day, when he was out plowing, his wife brought him lunch in the field. He drove the old mule into the shade, sat down on a stump, and began to eat his lunch. Immediately, his wife began haranguing him again. Complain, nag, nag; it just went on and on. All of a sudden, the old mule lashed out with both hind feet; caught her smack in the back of the head. Killed her dead on the spot. At the funeral several days later, the minister noticed something rather odd. When a woman mourner would approach the old farmer, he would listen for a minute, then nod his head in agreement; but when a man mourner approached him, he would listen for a minute, then shake his head in disagreement. This was so consistent, the minister decided to ask the old farmer about it. So after the funeral, the minister spoke to the old farmer, and asked him why he nodded his head and agreed with the women, but always shook his head and disagreed with all the men. The old farmer said, “Well, the women would come up and say something about how nice my wife looked, or how pretty her dress was, so I’d nod my head in agreement.” “And what about the men?” the minister asked. “They wanted to know if the mule was for sale.”

Review: Batman: Arkham City

Arkham City sees Batman facing up against his greatest foes across the grim backdrop of the prison district known as “Arkham”. There in a city as dark and brooding as the superhero himself will you encounter every one of Batman’s enemies as the very world comes to life in this action adventure. With so many glorious achievements in Arkham City, it’s the environment that really takes this game to the next level. Rarely (if ever) has a world been so richly detailed and every pixel contributes to the feeling that you’re moving through a living breathing universe. Although the city is small, there’s something new around every corner, whether it be something to unlock, a secret to discover, or another group of bad guys to fight. Of major note is Batman’s unique movement system. The ability to race through the city on foot, or to use a variety of devices to soar up to the rooftops or to glide effortlessly through the night skies is all but flawless. Watching Batman leaping over fences or scaling walls is a joy to behold, and the number of different movement methods is simply astonishing, from sliding to crawling to hanging upside down from the rooftops (this is Batman, after all). Of course, it goes without saying that the combat, like everything else in this game, is incredible. The basic controls are easy to master: simply punch or counter an attack, but there is a depth to combat where you can learn to disarm, stun, or even perform impressive critical strikes on your opponents. It’s a system that, after a whole week of play, never fails to impress. The actual storyline contains countless nods to characters from the Batman universe. While you’ll complete the basic game in a few nights, with a replayability factor bursting through the roof, items to collect and secrets to unlock, you’ll keep coming back again and again. There are endless things to see and do, encounters to discover, enemy cameos to unlock, and secret locations to explore. The attention to detail in Arkham City is simply astonishing. In fact, with so little space, I have to gloss over the playable Catwoman storyline, the cool gadgets, the fantastic voice acting, and the Riddler’s four hundred Challenges dotted around the city. I can’t talk about the random missions or the sheer wealth of jaw dropping moments. All I can say is: wow! Score: 9.5/10. Incredible. It’s not just my Game of the Month, it’s my game of the year. Now, where are my black rubber pants? I think I’ll go to Fright Night as ‘Batman’.

Halloween - Witches & Goths! Halloween is here again! Last year I told you about what Halloween entails. This year it’s more about Witches, little Devils with a bit of Gothic. The Gothic week-end in Whitby North Yorkshire is on November 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th. The Goths really make an effort - they even dress up their dogs! It’s a fabulous weekend just for looking and admiring the costumes, as they aim to be the best- dressed Goth in Whitby.

The rowan tree is known as the witch tree or `Lady of the Mountain` tree and in Norse lore it was the tree from which the first woman was created. It is the sign of vibrant life in the midst of death and is planted outside houses to ward off witchcraft.

Witches change their form into `Moon Familiars`. These are usually nocturnal creatures including the owl, hare, cat, fox and snail. The hare looms especially large in folk tales where it becomes the witch’s alter-ego. Folklorists through the ages tell tales about hunters chasing the elusive hare, and when one finally shoots its prey, the animal escapes. NEWS & INFORMATION

THE WARM HOME DISCOUNT Heather Stewart, SCC

There are changes coming into force affecting fuel tariffs, the rate at which that you pay for your fuel. This is a quick guide to the new rules. The government has decided that energy companies must set up a Warm Home Discount for certain groups of customer. • In the first year of operation, April 2011 to end March 2012, the Warm Home Discount is for older people on low incomes, the “Core Group”. • This winter, 2011/12, you will qualify if you were registered on 11th September 2011 with the Department for Work & Pensions to receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit. • The Savings Credit element of Pension Credit does not let you qualify this winter. • It must be your name or your partner’s name on the electricity bill. • The government will write out to all those people who do qualify. • If you qualify, you will receive a rebate of £120 on your electricity this coming winter, 2011/12 • This will rise to £140 each winter by the time the scheme ends in March 2015. • Where possible this will be paid automatically by your electricity supplier. If not, you will receive a letter asking for further details so that the payment can go through. • Seventeen energy companies have signed up to the Warm Home Discount so if you do qualify, your supplier should be included in those making the payment. Electricity suppliers must also contact customers who are in fuel poverty, or at risk of fuel poverty, but who are not receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit. These are the “Broader Group” and they are entitled to a rebate of £120 on their electricity too. The companies may continue to offer their own social tariffs to customers outside these two groups. They will not qualify for the full Warm Home Discount or the fuel poverty rebate but they may still need help with their fuel bills. A social tariff will be cheaper than the standard rate charged when paying by quarterly bill but will only be offered in restricted circumstances. It is for the energy company to decide who qualifies and the rate charged. There is no automatic qualification and no set rebate in this situation. Note that the Warm Home Discount is completely separate to the Winter Fuel Payment and the Cold Weather Payment schemes. If you have any questions please contact your own energy company – there will be a Customer Service number on your last bill or statement. Ask to be put through to the team dealing with the Warm Home Discount. Full details are on the DECC website at Warm Home Discount Scheme - Department of Energy and Climate Change.

There are things you can do to reduce Sheffield City Council’s Travel Solutions Team has been shortlisted for a Guardian Public Services Award. This is a prestigious national award and the Travel Solutions Team are delighted to have been shortlisted. Sheffield is one of 3 projects shortlisted under the ‘Transport and Mobility’ category. Sheffield has been shortlisted for supporting people with personal budgets to look at all of their travel options. People they have supported have made all sorts of choices and they have been supported to try different things. Emma Cawley, the project manager said, ‘We’ve supported over 100 people in the first 6 months. People have said to us they didn’t know there was so much choice. We’ve been really innovative. We help people find a good transport provider, we help set up a good, safe taxi journey, we teach people how to use public transport, and we’ve helped people lease a car with their personal budgets. Many people have used their personal budgets to make a simple change and the thing people have really benefitted from is the ‘support’ to make a change. This will help us achieve a greater awareness of choice for travel and an awareness of how much travel is very much part of having a good life for the disabled and older people we support’. The team is Emma Cawley, Jill Ward (Occupational Therapist), Elizabeth Hardman and Lydia Griffin (Travel Trainers). The event is on the 22nd November. A clinical commissioning group (CCG) will be set up in Sheffield, as set out in the Health and Social Care Bill currently being considered by Parliament. Although it will not be a formal organisaiton until 2013, it will start working this month under the PCT Board. It is important that the CCG has a clear view of what it wants to achieve, so that the public and partners understand this, and so its day to day decisions are guided by its long term aims. This document is a first draft of the CCG’s strategy. It is deliberately short and relatively simple. More detailed plans will, of course, be made, but the purpose of this document is to be clear, simple and straightforward. The document is currently being considered by the GP practices that make up the CCG. Comments on the document from members of the public are welcome and should be made by sending your comments to Tim Furness: t.furness@nhs.net To download the draft prospectus please visit: http://www.sheffield.nhs. uk/consultations/

BRADFIELD FARMERS’ ALE REAPS RICHER HARVEST When we last visited Bradfield Brewery in January of this year, there were exciting plans in place to expand what was rapidly becoming one of the most successful micro-breweries in the North of England. Over the last few years, Sheffield has deservedly earned its reputation as the epicentre of the thriving real ale industry - a real highlight when compared with the well-documented tales of doom and gloom across the licensed industry generally. We decided to re-visit Watt House Farm this month, to catch up on the details of what has been a really exciting few months for John Gill and his family, culminating recently in the visit of Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg to officially open the new state-of-the-art forty barrel brewing facility. This has been only one of many highlights in 2011. In September, they saw one of their stockists, The Porter Cottage, become the first in the city to be awarded a coveted “SIBA Local” award – presented to them by John. It proudly promotes its support for locally-brewed British beer, by joining the ‘SIBA Locals’ scheme, launched recently by the Society of Independent Brewers. Accepting his SIBA Locals plaque from Bradfield Brewery, licensee Tim Price said, “Customers now expect to see local beers on the bar. We offer 2 to 3 local beers and they’re extremely popular, Farmer’s Blonde from Bradfield Brewery is one of our best sellers.” John said at the time, “The pint of beer and the local pub are two great icons of British life, enjoyed by millions of people every day. At a time when many pubs are struggling to stay open, it’s cheering to see The Porter Cottage bucking the trend. Local beers, including our own, have been part of its success and we’re delighted to welcome them as a SIBA Local.” Further recognition for the brewery itself was not far behind – the flagship Farmers Blonde was voted the Best Beer Brewed in Sheffield at the city’s 37th annual beer festival. The festival held this year at Ponds Forge Sports Centre, hosted a blind tasting session to select the beer festival winners. Bradfield Brewery walked away with two top awards; Farmers Blonde – Best Beer Brewed in Sheffield and Farmers Steel Cow won Gold in the Best Bitter Category. The family were delighted to win not one, but two, prestigious awards at the festival and were

thrilled that best seller Farmers Blonde came out on top in Sheffield - a real testament to the skills of Champion Head brewer Paul Ward and his staff, who continue to produce an excellent range of ales with the quality and consistency of flavour demanded by the most discerning of real ale disciples! Meanwhile Nick Clegg’s visit had an added bonus for the Gill family – not only did he officially open the new plant, he was able to present them with a Certificate of Recognition by The All Party Parliamentary Beer Group for having one of their beers, Farmers Brown Cow on sale at the Strangers Bar in the House of Commons in May. As John commented, ‘The visit couldn’t have come at a better time - we are obviously delighted that our beer was on sale in the House of Commons but even more so that we could have such a prominent figure to open the new brew plant.’ On his visit Nick Clegg was given a guided tour of the brewery and a brief explanation of the brewing process. He said “I was delighted to open the new brew plant. It was great to meet John and the staff and see first hand their enthusiasm and commitment. It’s no wonder Bradfield Brewery is expanding because the beer is delicious, as I’m sure many of my parliamentary colleagues who tasted it in the Strangers Bar would agree.” Not that John is resting on his laurels – as a farmer he is acutely aware of the potential impact of industry on rural areas, and having designed the whole process around the hilly terrain, using a gravity-feed system to drive the brewing cycle, he recently commissioned Norcroft Solar to install 158 solar panels on the roof of the brewery. These will potentially generate 30,000 kw of electricity per year (enough to run six average family homes!) and his aim eventually is to make the brewery one of the most ecologically friendly in the whole country. It has been a real pleasure following the fortunes of Bradfield Brewery throughout 2011, seeing so many accolades coming their way. We look forward to 2012 with great anticipation!

SHEFFIELD’S LARGEST TESCO STORE SET TO OPEN The doors to Sheffield’s first ever Tesco Extra supermarket will officially open on Monday 31st October and to celebrate, the store team will make a donation to St. Luke’s. At 82,000 sq ft, the store on Savile Street has created 300 new jobs for the local community. Store manager, Mark Collings and his team will be joined by Margot Walker, Corporate and Trust Fundraising Manager for St Luke’s at 10am as part of the official opening ceremony when Mark will present Margot with a £1,000 cheque before cutting a ribbon to declare the store open. Mark said: “My team and I are looking forward to the launch and are pleased to be able to support a great local charity that provides an invaluable service to the residents of Sheffield.” Margot said: “St Luke’s is Sheffield’s only hospice, offering specialist end of life care, free of charge to people across the whole of Sheffield. Every year St Luke’s relies on the generosity of the people of Sheffield to keep the hospice open so Tesco’s kind donation will be put towards the running costs.” The store has employed single parents, older people who have been made redundant and younger people who have never worked, with the staff age ranging from 16 to 62. 117 people from Tesco’s Regeneration Scheme, who had been unemployed for six months or longer, have now graduated from an eight week Tesco training programme especially designed to help get the new members of staff back into work. Graduates were presented with a certificate from The Rt Hon David Blunkett MP at a special ceremony. Store Manager Mark said: “I’m delighted to have so many new staff on board as a result of our recruitment partnership and I’m confident that plenty of the new employees have the skills needed to progress within the store and the company. “I would like to take this opportunity to invite the residents of Sheffield to visit their new store and we hope they are pleased with what we have to offer and look forward to meeting them next week.” Customers will also be able to enjoy complimentary cake and refreshments with staff and launch guests following the cheque

presentation and ribbon cutting. Opening celebrations will continue as shoppers are given the chance to play in store competition, Lucky Plates. Customers visiting the store from the 7th to the 13th November between 9am and 5pm can ask for a “Lucky Plate” to be attached to their trolley before beginning their shopping. Throughout the day lucky numbers will be announced over the tannoy. If a customer’s plate matches the number called out they will win a £25 Tesco gift card. There will be one prize drawn every hour between 9am and 5pm (10am to 4pm on Sunday). In addition to this the Tesco Trolley Buggy, the fastest two seat shopping trolley in the world, will be making its way around Sheffield every day from 29th October (12pm until 5pm) until 2nd November from 9am until 5pm. The new store will offer a selection of fresh counters, serving meat and fish, a range of fruit and vegetables and dairy products. Non-food ranges will include clothing, toys, health and beauty products, electricals, DVDs, books and CDs. There will also be a range of services including a Tesco Direct service, a café, a phone shop and a petrol station. The new Tesco Extra will open for the first time at 8am on Monday 31st October. Following the opening day the store will open at 6am on Monday, for 24 hours until midnight on Saturday. The store will be open from 11am until 5pm on Sunday. The petrol station facilities will be available 24 hours a day.

CASK ALE SALES RISE AGAIN Cask ale has once again been hailed as a real force for good for the pub trade with 80% of licensees expecting sales of Britain’s national drink to rise over the coming year — although 35% believe they are still in for another tough 12 months. The research comes from Molson Coors, whose acquisition of Cornwall’s Sharp’s Brewery in February marked a major step change for national brewers in recognising the potential for cask ale. In a positive vein, 28% of pub owners surveyed felt that prospects are either ‘good’ or ‘very good’. Pub owners continue to be frustrated by increased regulation limiting their ability to compete. Moves to give local residents more control over licensing decisions

were seen as threatening by 61% of those surveyed and further restrictions on drink promotions were seen as threatening by 40% of pub owners. The findings nevertheless showed that the industry is very willing to innovate to try to counteract a trend of at-home drinking. Over three quarters (78%) saw an opportunity for using websites and apps to promote themselves and help potential customers find them easier and quicker. Of those that serve food, 80% believe a more enticing food offer would build business. “It’s no surprise, given the assault on pubs from all corners, that publicans feel pessimistic,” said beer expert Pete Brown. “But this survey stresses yet again where the signs of hope come from. If you’re offering the drinker nothing different or more interesting from what he can get in the supermarket, they won’t come to your pub. “But cask ale is unique to pubs, and the Cask Report has demonstrated repeatedly that

cask ale works for the publican and not just in terms of cask sales. It in-creases overall turnover and footfall because cask drinkers visit pubs more often, and when they do they bring non-cask drinkers with them, and they spend more money while they’re there.” Simon Cox, independent on-trade sales director for Molson Coors (UK), said: “It is obviously a challenging time for the on trade but we’re committed to working with our customers to help them provide the atmosphere, the products and the experience that will enable them to thrive even in this tough market.

JOHN REILLYʼS THE BARENEW CD NECESSITIES It is no surprise that Sheffieldbased John Reilly was picked to support Ray Davies on tour, or that Richard Hawley’s backing band have helped out on his new album. Reilly is a classic English singersongwriter in the Davies/Hawley mould and Zebulon is a terrific record, brimming with tunes, passion and wit. The opener, Some Fall Too Hard sets the tone, Reilly’s rich, open vocal set against a sweet and restless melody, but Living With It is the stand-out, a gale of laughter that turns into a gorgeous breeze of a pop song. A masterful set.

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques

MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

Well done to the girls and guys from Sarah’s Florist in Hillsborough who have stripped off for a calendar to raise money for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. The other day on the show I asked what you’ve done for charity. Angie in Doncaster has tackled the infamous Krypton factor assault course, and Alan in Gleadless told us about the time he got together with his workmates to travel around town to raise money in fancy dress. On this occasion they were all dressed as characters from Disney movies. Frankie Starr of Chesterfield managed to get comic legend Freddie Starr to pose for a picture with him, taking advantage of the similarity in their names, and Jane Stewart of Swallownest did a car boot sale dressed as a clown. Just to add to effect, she was next to a baker who couldn’t resist temptation. Yes, she got a real custard pie in the face! There’s sure to be more fun and games on the show later this week. Actress Sue Pollard is in Sheffield in the hit musical Annie and she’s popping in for a chat on Friday morning. We’re also on the lookout for people you would like to surprise as well. Have a think about the people who are always there to lend a helping hand, be it for you or just generally in your area. It could be someone who runs a shop, a voluntary group, a brother, a sister or may be your wife or your husband. Drop me a line and tell me who you would like to nominate for a special surprise. Email through our website at magicam.co.uk.

Radio Nightingale broadcasts to the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital. Most of our programmes are music based to help try and make every patients’ stay in hospital a little bit easier by providing entertainment that appeals to all tastes to help them recover. This week though I had a special guest on the programme - Dr David Tooth, a GP from the Kiveton Park Surgery. Dr Tooth came along as part of a media training programme we are working on with NHS Rotherham to get his first experience of being interviewed live. We talked in the interview about the NHS health check which checks for early warning signs of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. This included information about the test itself and the lifestyle changes people could make in order to reduce their risks of experiencing any of these conditions. Particularly in relation to smoking, alcohol intake, exercise and diet. The interview was really informative and relaxed, hopefully encouraging any listeners to take up the opportunity of the NHS health check or make some positive changes in their lifestyle. Dr Tooth said ‘it was great fun and See you in the morning hopefully of some interest to your listeners, as well as very useful as part of my own training’. Further interviews with Dr Tooth and other health practitioners from NHS Rotherham are planned over the forthcoming months. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT! CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

Halloween is fast approaching as you have probably gathered from the tacky costumes filling the shops. Personally, I don’t like all the commercialism that now surrounds this ancient festival but you’d expect that from a historian! But a Halloween party might go down well with club members young and old - they seem to bring in customers in other places. Perhaps you know of a club that has real spirits, and not just those in the optics. Some clubs occupy very old buildings or are built on historic land. Don’t rule out clubs as being beyond the other-worldly! When I visited the Bentinck Miners Welfare Club in Kirkby in Ashfield, Notts, last year I was quickly informed of their ghostly goings on. I was there to review the club on an afternoon when a community panto was being performed by the very talented Talegate Theatre Company. Did I enjoy that? Oh, yes I did. But I was also intrigued by stories of Roman and 1st World War soldiers being seen around the place. The club is sited near an old Roman road and also allegedly stands on the site of a former army hospital. Bentinck’s history goes back at least 80 years though no-one is too sure about when exactly it was set up. It was one of several local miners’ clubs established to help the miners and their families. Many have now sadly closed down but the Bentinck was trying hard to keep its doors open, to the living and not only those from ‘the other side’! The barman told me of strange orbs of light that appear in photos taken in the club. I was sceptical I must admit but I snapped away as I always do when visiting clubs. Lo and behold there were many unexplained orbs, the first time I have ever had such things on my pictures. They were particularly prominent around the Talegate performers on stage. Clearly, these ghosts liked them and the sound of laughter! My photos of the bowling green had some very murky images on them and everyone I have showed them to see faces, monks and, wait for it, Roman soldiers. The local paranormal group, www. tappitcrew.info, have had several all-night sit-ins at the club and noticed some odd things going on after the bars the lights have gone off. Maybe it’s all just too much beer and imagination but I’m leaving my mind open about those orbs. Happy Halloween!

REVIEW: LETLIVE AT 02 by KT Evans

Q AWARD WINNERS 2011 by KT Evans

What makes a world class band? What do musicians have to inhabit to be crowned such a prestigious title? Is it measured against their lyrical ability, energy, stage presence or amongst other bands capability in the same situation? All these questions are easily answered by a seven letter word…letlive. Although only first support for Londoner’s Enter Shikari at Sheffield’s O2 academy on 16th October, they well and truly smashed it with their full on, spot on, bang on performance on the night…

We can all pretty much bank on the fact that there will be a fair few sore heads in the music industry this week as the annual Q Awards once again took place at London’s Grosvener Hotel last Monday. One of the most talked about award ceremonies on the music calendar, stars flocked from across the globe to be a part of the prestigious event. So, without further ado, let’s reveal the winners!

Having stemmed from a scene where hardcore is the certified best core in California USA, letlive were almost the under dogs on the night, having Your Demise and Enter Shikari to contend with later on in the three band bill. Seemingly unphased by their task however, front man Jason Butler came on stage with enough passion to seriously challenge any other lead vocalist, along with mega loads of fuelled up energy to match. Opening the set with Casino Columbus, a decibel raising number from their third studio album ‘Fake History,’ the mood was well and truly set for a killer night ahead. Even though, let’s be honest, it seemed the audience were a little overwhelmed by the five piece from Los Angeles, California, this only drove the band to become more outlandish, more in-you-face to reinforce their hazardous nature. Pacing the stage and diving about comes only as a warm up for letlive…hell these guys delivered a rawness so rare in up-coming bands nowadays to result in a dramatic showcase of progressive post-hardcore madness. A definite highlight of the night came when ‘Muther’ was performed towards the latter half of the bands set, which saw an emotional Jason relive the trials and tribulations of living up to his father’s expectations. Although all very deep for a Sunday night, the packed large room in the academy were sure as hell reacting to the lyrics, with cheers and applause to equal the expressive nature of the song. Moving their stage performance up a notch from their first-rate show at Leeds and Reading Festival this year, Letlive have not only proved to everyone that no matter how many people you play to, or how many people are unaware of your music, you can still put on a kick-ass, passionate set. Going above and beyond what a support act should deliver, letlive were the stand out group of the night and could truly deserve a headline tour for themselves. So…go buy their album! For more info on letlive including their new album ‘Fake History,’ tour dates, merch and tickets see their official website on www.thisisletlive.com or myspace page on www.mypace.com/letlive.

First things first then…best track. There really wasn’t much of a contest for this London born starlet, who has had a phenomenal 2011. Having learnt her trade at The Brit School, Adele snapped up the award with her chart topping track ‘Rolling In the Deep.’ Storming the world’s singles chart, her catchy number spent seven consecutive weeks at number one in the UK along with The Netherlands, Austria, Canada and The USA. Arguably one of the best singer songwriters of our generation, Adele is a certified icon within the UK Music industry. Good work! Winning the award for Breakthrough artist at the event was Londoner Ed Sheeran. Smashing his way onto the charts with his emotive single ‘The A Team,’ Sheeran has had a string of hit to follow including ‘I don’t need you’ and ‘Lego House’ which, a bit of trivia for you, starts Rupert Grint in the video. Now that we mention it, are they twins? No doubt a very prosperous year ahead of the star, Ed Sheeran has played to festival audiences across the country to produce his most successful year yet. Fiery singer song writer Jesse J took home a sought after award, this time for her video of ‘Do It Like A Dude,’ which sees the star put on a pretty mean façade to frighten all. Similar to that of Ellie Goulding last year, Jesse J won the Critics Choice Award in January which predicts strong futures for bands, acts and musicians. Well and truly living up to its name, Jesse J is now an award winning chart topper. Scottish Rockers Biffy Clyro were awarded Best Live Act, to commemorate their first class stage performance. Humble and modest, the three piece never fail to deliver big with their heavy rock music, gracing stages across the globe. Snow Patrol won the award for classic song with ‘Chasing Cars’ whilst Coldplay were awarded ‘Best Act In the World Today.’ Q Editor-in-chief Paul Rees commented on the success of the awards saying, ‘This year the awards were a true celebration of where music is at right now – being, as they were, reflective of how rich and varied the musical landscape is, and of how much enthused music fans are to be able to discover so much that is new and exciting.’ For the full list of winners, see Q’s website www. qthemusic.com.

Angler’s Corner Racing Form by Clint Walker

Well, this week it was a trip to the Tackle & Gun magazine trade show which took me to Warwickshire to catch up with a few old friends and hopefully make some new ones! Sited at Stoneleigh Park, the show brings together retail, media, manufacture and distribution experts to showcase all that will be new for the forthcoming season and to find out what will be on the shelves of your tackle shop in the near future..... I met up with Simon Pomeroy of Pallatrax (www. pallatrax.co.uk) and Ray Best who is another of my editors over at top website UKMatch Angler (www. ukmatchangler.com) to talk tactics for product exposure and marketing plans for next year; not the most exciting of things to chat about, but an essential part of the ‘behind the scenes’ angling business, and at least Simon bought the tea for a change..... We managed to grab a cuppa together then Ray continued with filming for an exciting new feature on his website, and I left to ‘do the rounds’ with Simon to try and expand my contacts. In truth, there wasn’t a lot that could be termed ‘new’, although I did get chance to check out the newest reels from Wychwood. The Solace 10 ACS reel features some nifty ideas including the innovative Auto Clip System (ACS) which protects the line in the event of excessive pressure and guarantees that the mainline will come free of the clip if you forget to remove it when clipped up. It has loads of other good ideas and looks a cracking piece of kit which should compete exceptionally well with other manufacturer’s baitrunner ranges! I also got to look at the extensive bait range from new ‘kid on the block’ Chapel Baits. George Crisp and his business partners have ploughed an awful lot of financial investment into a quality bait package which looks as though it will do very well amongst its competitors. If you haven’t seen it in the angling press yet, I’m fairly sure you will soon! Chapel Baits are running a variety of competitions in the media, including a prize worth over £1000 for the lucky winner! Field testing has thrown up some very big hits of huge carp! Find out more at www.chapelbaits. co.uk I did meet (finally!) the boys at Anglers Mail, and if you read it, you may know that the perch which features on last week’s cover was submitted by me after a stunning catch report from one of the young anglers on the Pallatrax team. The week before, another young star, Jack Shurety graced the cover of Carp-Talk magazine after he landed a net full of big ‘uns from his local water on Pallatrax baits. Jack was also announced as the magazines ‘star of the month’ and bagged a top tackle prize from Wychwood, so it’s been a great couple of weeks for me in my new position as media officer for Pallatrax as I’ve had plenty to do! Fishing tomorrow, hopefully I’ll be able to write about next week!

United House Gold Cup at Ascot and Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby head the Saturday cards By Timelord This Saturday sees seven races on the box on Channel 4. There are five National Hunt races (three from Ascot and two from Wetherby) and two Flat races (from Newmarket) as the emphasis begins to switch to the jumps code for the winter. The big NH races are the United House Gold Cup from Ascot at 3.40, a Grade 3 handicap chase over three miles, the Charlie Hall Chase from Wetherby at 3.20, a three mile one furlong Grade 2 chase and the John Smith’s Hurdle (registered as the West Yorkshire Hurdle) at 2.45, a three mile one furlong Grade 2 Hurdle . The supporting races at Ascot are the Byrne Group Handicap Chase at 2.30, a two mile one furlong Listed race, and the William Hill Handicap Hurdle at 3.00, a two mile Listed race. On the flat at Newmarket there are two Listed races, each over a mile. Ascot: 2.30 Byrne Group Handicap Chase: Takeroc was very impressive at Aintree last weekend but may not turn out again so quickly and is therefore passed over for this one. His stable-mate and recent winner over hurdles Pepe Simo is on a roll at present and looks to have the edge over Safari Journey on last April’s Newton Abbot running, even though the Philip Hobbs’ horses seem to be running really well at present. It is dangerous to dismiss him too lightly but the one that looks to have the best chance to me, and has proven fitness on his side, is Irish raider Finger Onthe Pulse, last year’s Galway Plate winner, who was a winner at Listowel in September and, as a previous Grade 3 winner at this distance, seems versatile enough to cope with the three furlong drop back in distance from his last run. Of the others Evan Williams has three entries with the best of them looking to be William’s Wishes who had an excellent novice season last year. Charlie Longsden’s

3.00 William Hill Handicap Hurdle: This looks a really competitive affair at this stage. There are 21 entries with not much between them on my ratings. Top of my ratings is Via Galilei, closely followed by Pateese, Katies Tuitor, Ultimate, Nearby, Tarkari, Oldrik, Pascha Bere and Viva Colonia. As if that wasn’t enough Elsafeer is on an upward curve at some rate, Topolski is an unbeaten horse over hurdles, including a Novice Grade 2 race, and Third Intention is a winner last time out. I cannot find much to separate quite a few of these and so have concluded that it will probably be best to stick with a good rating and proven fitness. On both counts Ultimate looks to fit the bill. He won on the flat at Catterick just over a month ago, won his first novice chase at Huntingdon at the start of this month where he jumped well and looked in rude health and has one of my top ratings. I am hopeful that he will go off at a workable price owing to the truly competitive nature of the event. 3.40 United House Gold Cup: This is often one of the best early season chases and this year looks as though it will be no exception. Paul Nicholls’ Niche Market is top of my ratings from his fifth placed effort behind Diamond Harry in last year’s Hennessy Gold Cup. However, with only two wins from 23 chase starts he doesn’t win often enough for me and Nicholls has also entered Promising Anshan, a winner last time out, and The Minack who both complicate things as far as his stable entries go. Exmoor Ranger was fourth in this race a year ago and always seems to run well fresh. He is second top in my ratings and was a serious consideration for my selection. However I have decided to go for my third top rated, Stewarts House, who moved from Arthur Moore’s Irish yard to join Tim Vaughan in July. Vaughan sent him out to win a Newton Abbot Listed chase in August, where he beat Life of a Luso by six lengths, and looks to have at last perhaps found the key to what has always been a talented but frustrating performer. He is a hopeful selection to follow up in this better class off his low weight. If he is absent Exmoor Ranger is the reserve selection. Of the others recent winners Balthazar King, Bescot Springs, Muirhead and Ostland will all have their supporters and could be dangerous while dual winner Dover’s Hill cannot be discounted either. Wetherby: 2.45 John Smiths Hurdle: This Grade 2 contest has fourteen entries at present. The one I like best is Nigel Twiston-Davies’ stout staying hurdler Kayf Aramis. Admittedly his winsto-runs ratio is not very good (3 from 29), he has never won at this time of year over hurdles and he faces some pretty good opposition but he was second (to Fair Along) in this race last year, has run in some really top class contests and on his day he can be a class act so I am hopeful that he will turn up fit enough to do himself justice. Last year’s winner, Fair Along, cannot be left out of calculations along with Rod Millman’s Mobaasher, Gordon Elliott’s Irish raider Carlito Brigante and Robin Dickins’ Restless Harry but the most dangerous opponent could turn out to be Killyglen who could run them all close if putting his chase game to good effect over hurdles.

horses are running out of their skins at present so his Baseball Ted could prove dangerous, as could Lucinda Russell’s Safari Adventures but the most dangerous of all could prove to be Alan King’s Torphichen who could go well at a good price if stripping fit enough.

3.20 Charlie Hall Chase: Diamond Harry (Nap) is a confident selection to run out winner of this event. Last year’s Hennessy winner was my long range choice to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup before he was ruled out through injury. He has the beating of Carruthers, Weird Al, Neptune Collonges and Hey Big Spender on that showing and should take all the beating providing fitness is not an issue – I am hopeful on that score however as he has won first time out every season. Boasting a record of 2/2 NHF races, 5/7 hurdle races and 3/4 chases he should be able to add to that tally here. One that improved throughout last year and may give him most to do is Neil Mulholland’s Midnight Chase who capped a fine season by finishing fifth in the Gold Cup after running up a four-timer sequence earlier

on. Poquelin is an interesting entry from the Nicholls stable. He has yet to compete beyond 21 furlongs in either sphere but the stable usually knows the time of day with its runners so I expect a bold showing from him but without him being good enough to trouble my selection. Nicholls’ other runner Neptune Collonges also has a good rating in my system and could fill out a place here. Newmarket: 2.25 Novae Bloodstock Insurance Ben Marshall Stakes: 16 runners are entered in this mile contest. Inler benefited from a classy front-running ride from Jimmy Fortune here last week and has a decent chance of following up. That day he beat Secrecy fair and square by a length and it may be that the 3lb turn around in the weights will not be enough to alter their finishing order in this contest. However one that I prefer to both of the above is Jeremy Noseda’s Call to Reason who is in receipt of 5lb from Inler, is also a course and distance winner and turned in a good pipe-opening effort when second to Skilful at Haydock on 24 September. I expect her to progress from that run. If she doesn’t turn up then I would rely on Inler with Secrecy giving him most to do. 3.55 EBF Montrose Fillies’ Stakes: This 20 runner affair can go to the once-raced Roger Varian trained Oojooba who was a convincing two and a half length winner on her debut. However confidence is tempered by the fact that she is opposed by no less than 12 other last time out winners of which three were debut scorers. With so many unexposed animals against her it is difficult to be dogmatic about her chances but she looked good on debut. Esentepe and Diala may be the pair that give her most to do.

Selection Summary: Ascot: 2.30 Finger Onthe Pulse 3.00 Ultimate 3.40 Stewarts House Wetherby: 2.45 Kayf Aramis 3.30 Diamond Harry (Nap) Newmarket: 2.05 Call to Reason 3.55 Oojooba Good Luck! Last week’s results: Barney Mc Grew just failed to reach a place, Ballesteros seemed to run flat and, after coming in for support in the morning, Learn wasn’t good enough to defeat the impressive Camelot in the Racing Post Trophy. The others were all non runners in their selected events although Fine Parchment did finish two and a half length second to Hector’s Choice in the 5.15 at Aintree, having held every chance over the last. The upshot was a three point loss to one point level stakes. Doncaster: 2.00 Barney McGrew – 5th @ 12/1 2.30 Ballesteros – 8th @ 11/2 3.00 Learn – 4th @ 7/1 Newbury: 2.15 Rugged Cross – non runner 2.45 Colombian – non runner 3.15 Basantee – non runner 3.45 Absinthe – non runner Aintree: 3.30 Fine Parchment – non runner

Millers and Rovers News & Reviews 2011/12

MILLERS NEWS 2011/12 MILLERS STOP THE ROT MATCH REPORT www.themillers.co.uk

The Millers halted their run of losses by earning a 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury at Don Valley Stadium. The result could have been even better after Lewis Grabban’s first-half wonder-strike gave Rotherham the lead, but substitute Shane Cansdell-Sherriff’s leveller for the visitors before the break earned a point for the Shrews. Millers manager Andy Scott had made two changes to the starting 11 that lost last weekend at Bristol Rovers. Guy Branston’s suspension meant Dale Tonge was handed a start at right-back, while Marcus Marshall replaced Alex Revell. The Millers had an early chance through Gareth Evans, but his shot rose high over the bar from a tight angle. Rotherham were then temporarily reduced to 10-men as Tonge took a hefty blow when heading the ball clear, and had to leave the field to receive treatment from the physio. Danny Schofield was next to cause disarray by venturing on a positive counter-attacking run, but his powerful left-footed strike only found the side-netting. Former Owls man Sean McAllister then found space on the right-wing for Shrewsbury after Marvin Morgan’s deft flick and the midfielder fizzed over a cross-cumshot, but it evaded everyone and sailed harmlessly past Andy Warrington’s far post. However within a minute Rotherham went one better and opened the scoring through a wonder-goal by Grabban. Shrewsbury’s defenders were caught in possession after tenacious work by Danny Harrison, who offloaded the ball to Grabban. The striker chanced his arm from 30 yards and thundered the ball into the top-corner to break the deadlock. Grabban could have extended his tally for the afternoon

41

just minutes later.Evans showed a good turn of pace to find space on the left-wing and hung up a cross for Grabban, but his volley lacked power and Chris Neal saved comfortably. However the Shrews were back in the game on the stroke of half-time through Cansdell-Sherriff. Shrewsbury were given a free-kick by the referee in a dangerous area, and the substitute was alert to stab home from close range after the ball had been nodded back into the danger-zone. Rotherham looked like they would need to make a change early in the second half after stand-in skipper Johnny Mullins looked to have picked up an innocuous injury. However the captain decided to battle through and Troy Brown, who had been readying himself for action, retook his place on the bench. Evans then found himself with space to run into on the right-wing and delivered a sumptuous cross towards Harrison, but he was denied at the last by McAllister who had tracked his run from midfield and took the ball off Harrison’s toe. Marshall was next to fashion a chance as he collected the ball inside the box after a poor clearance from a Millers corner. The winger did the hard work to buy a yard of space, but his shot drifted harmlessly over the frame of the goal. Morgan then managed to find the net for the Shrews by rounding Warrington, but not before the assistant referee flagged him offside after he failed to time his run. Chris Holroyd was handed a chance from the bench for the Millers and his first involvement was to challenge former Millers man Sharps to a foot-race after a ball was lofted over the defence. However Neal was alert between the sticks for Shrewsbury and collected with Holroyd bearing down. Shrewsbury might have stolen all three points deep into injury time as James Collins cut in from the left-hand side of the area.Man-of-the-match Michael Raynes slipped on the turf at the vital moment but Collins shot was down the neck of Warrington, whose save ensured the teams each took a share of the spoils.

ROVERS NEWS 2011/12 ROVERS TRAVEL SICKNESS CONTINUES MATCH REPORT www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk

The Rovers were unchanged from Tuesday’s starting line-up against Blackpool. Portsmouth made one change from their midweek game against Ipswich Town, Erik Huseklepp replacing Joel Ward, who dropped to the bench. The Rovers got the game underway and spent the first minutes in the Pompey half. This gave Henderson, the home keeper, the chance to launch a long kick downfield that went over the Rovers backline. VARNEY was the first to respond, beat Sullivan to the ball and slotted into the empty net in the third minute. Two minutes later, Kitson beat Sullivan, who was facing a low sun, in the air but Friend cleared off the line at the near post. Minutes later, a Rovers attack produced a corner but it was cleared. In the 12th minute the Rovers found themselves defending desperately when their appeals for offside were not answered leaving Huseklepp to get to the left byline and pull the ball back for Kitson but Friend blocked his goalbound effort. The Rovers hit back and over the next fifteen minutes put pressure on the home defence. A couple of corners came to nothing but in the 27th minute a fierce drive from the left angle of the penalty area by Bennett was tipped away by Henderson for a corner on the Rovers left. The ball was cleared out of defence to GILLETT, who rifled into the net from a central position 25 yards out. This stung the home team into offensive action and on the half hour they forced a corner, which took two attempts for the Rovers to clear. However, the half ran down to it’s close with play mostly in midfield but the Rovers had the better of the possession and attacking intent, shown in the 44th minute when they won a corner, which came

out of the home defence to Chimbonda but he put wide from 30yards. Half Time - Portsmouth 1 Doncaster Rovers 1 The game was only three minutes old when Pompey forced a corner, which came out of the Rovers defence to Huseklepp on the left. He put a cross to the near post where Rocha headed wide. Two minutes later Friend passed back to Sullivan, who had to hurriedly clear as Kitson closed him down. Minutes later another corner to Pompey was cleared. The home team had most of the play in the first ten minutes but Bennett then ran at the defence before shooting from 25yards but putting the ball high and wide. Past the hour and the Rovers were put under the cosh. Following a free kick to Portsmouth, a cross from the left was headed over then in another attack the ball was pinged from left to right and back to middle by Huseklepp causing chaos in the Rovers defence before Friend eventually cleared. In the 66th minute the Rovers lifted the siege to win a corner but Henderson caught the ball well. But the home team came back at the Rovers and in the 68th minute added a second goal when the Rovers failed to clear their lines. The ball was bobbling about in the Rovers six-yard box before KITSON got his head to it and headed in. Two minutes on and Bennett had a go from 25yards following a good build-up but put over the bar. Then, in the 75th minute, goal number three arrived for the home team when Kitson played in Huseklepp on the left. He squared the ball to an unmarked VARNEY in the middle for him to slot into the net. The Rovers tried hard to get their first half game going but the home team were well on top and kept the pressure on to the end, with only sporadic attacks from the Rovers.

Gary Megson said the 2-0 win over Colchester on Saturday was Wednesday’s ‘best result of the season’ so far. A lacklustre opening period gave way to a far more purposeful second half performance and Wednesday went on to notch their seventh consecutive home victory of the campaign so far. And Megson said: “That was our best result of the season given how we played in the first half, when it was like watching paint dry. “We said to the players at half time that we needed another 10 to 15 per cent and to their credit, they responded.

“We were terrific in the second half, we upped the tempo and got our rewards.” Megson had particular words of praise for Reda Johnson, who turned in another impressive display in the left back berth and scored the Owls’ second goal to boot. The manager said: “I thought Reda had a really good game. He’s big, he’s strong, he has pace, he has power and he can score a goal, which he did today. “I know he has said that left back is not his best position but he hasn’t played there before this season. “When I was playing here, Mel Sterland was a midfielder who was moved to right back and that’s where he played the rest of his career.” Johnson, though, will miss the Owls’ trip to Carlisle on Tuesday night having picked up a fifth booking of the season against the U’s, triggering an automatic one-match ban.

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2011/12

LAST GASP HEARTACHE FOR BLADES BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

A goal in the sixth of five added minutes of injury time cost United a second consecutive victory on the road. Chris Porter’s goal in the final ten minutes looked to have secured three points for United at Leyton Orient, but a late, late strike earned Russell Slade’s side a share of the spoils. Charlie Daniels had been shown a second half red card for the home side but the O’s - unbeaten in previous four League One encounters - sneaked a point through Kevin Lisbie. Boss Wilson opted for an unchanged team, keeping faith with the same XI that started the victory at Preston, meaning two-goal hero Williamson had to be content with a place on the bench. Also amongst the substitutes were Evans and Doyle, the latter taking the place of Cresswell. Former Blade Spring was part of the Orient midfield. The formation, unsurprisingly, remained 4-4-2 and it took until the seventh minute before the first chance was recorded. Maguire pulled down Lowton’s free-kick but fired wide after swiveling inside the six-yard box. The home side struck back with a Daniels header, which Simonsen touched over and then Lisbie headed wide from a Cox corner. The chances continued and before the 20-minute mark Porter had cut inside, seeing his shot parried away by goalkeeper Butcher and Phillips drilled a 30-yard freekick just wide. Mooney should have done better when he was afforded too much space to meet a Daniels cross, whilst the Blades also went close on 24 minutes following a Phillips run but the subsequent shot from Clarke was headed clear by Forbes. Mooney was unable to squeeze home from an Orient corner just after the half-hour mark and the remaining chances of the first half fell to the Blades. A 40-yard shot from Phillips forced Butcher to gather at the second attempt and, just before the interval, Quinn’s cross found Clarke at the back post but he headed down and wide. The home side began the second half with a couple of stray efforts, whilst United worked a neat move with Porter, Clarke and Phillips but McDonald, bombing forward to join the attack, could only plant his cross into the arms of Butcher. Clarke made way for Evans just before the hour and Collins headed over from a corner

by Phillips moments later. A spell of Orient pressure included a number of corners and Forbes should have done better on 63 minutes. As time ticked on the game became more open and United came close to opening the scoring on 68 minutes but Quinn’s free-kick from the left saw a combination of Porter and Maguire head wide at the back post. Simonsen was called upon to make a near post save from McSweeney and from the resulting corner Cox fired over the crossbar. With 20 minutes remaining, Williamson was brought on and minutes later he was being helped from the pitch following a tackle by Daniels, who was sent off. Montgomery was also booked for a foul moments earlier, which the referee allowed to continue with the advantage rule. Doyle was thrown into the mix. Evans fired a free-kick wide as the game entered the final ten minutes and United nabbed the lead with six minutes remaining. From Quinn’s left-wing cross, Evans mishit his shot, Doyle went down in a crowded box and McDonald was involved before the ball broke loose for PORTER to prod in from close range. The late pressure, understandably, came from the desperate home side. Quinn was forced into a headed clearance and Simonsen gathered in a cross. Five minutes of added time gave Orient hope and Laird failed to find the target with a header from George Porter’s cross, whilst the home fans were constantly showing their displeasure at the referee after a number of successive decisions failed to go their way. Maguire was booked very late on for a unnecessary challenge and the Blades were made to pay... well after the five minutes of added time. 90+6 minutes was given as the official time of the goal. A free-kick was launched into the box, United failed to clear and LISBIE fired into the corner of the net, through a crowded box. There was little time to respond and United were clearly disappointed, despite the point, at the final whistle.

MAGUIRE SIGNS CHESTERFIELD TICKET DETAILS ON FOR THE BLADES NEWS LONG HAUL! www.sufc.co.uk BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

Harry Maguire has committed his longterm future to the Blades by signing a contract extension. The teenage central defender, who has played every minute of every game in all competitions this season, is now committed to the Lane until the summer of 2015. The Sheffield-born defender, who graduated through United’s coveted Academy system and featured heavily in the Blades progress to the FA Youth Cup Final last term, told www.sufc.co.uk: “I am delighted to sign this deal and now I can concentrate purely on my football. I was always going to sign and thankfully everything has been finalised now. “I am desperate to keeping playing well and hopefully I can play every minute of this season and help the team win promotion.” “This deal means all I need to think about is my performances - I don’t want anything to change off the field.” Boss Danny Wilson added: “I am delighted that Harry has signed the deal. Looking ahead towards the long-term he still has plenty to learn and needs more experience, but he has started his career very brightly. “To be playing regularly at such a young age is testimony to him. He has looked at the prospects for himself and he wanted to stay at Bramall Lane for the foreseeable future.”
