Lewis is being featured regularly on Radio 2 to rave reviews from Graham Norton, Paul O’Grady and Chris Evans. The concert will also feature Butlins Brass Band Champions the City of Sheffield Band playing a selection of Christmas music and classics. Sheffield is very fortunate to have one of the finest Cathedral choirs in the country under the directorship of Neil Taylor and the concert will include a contribution by the Cathedral Songmen blending the traditional
meaning of Christmas with the atmosphere and sounds created within a beautiful acoustic. The climax of the concert will be a number of special arrangements created for the City of Sheffield Band and John Reilly. The idea was first successfully used at a concert in Sheffield City Hall at another event in aid of Weston Park and this unique blend of brass and voice will be heard again this Sunday in the glorious surrounding of the Cathedral. Copley’s Column
I was very pleased to be invited by Stephanie King to be a member of the judging panel for the final of this year’s prestigious Stars of the Future competition. This was no easy task, as the standard of the eleven contestants was amazing. Those that did not win would have won any other competition. I did get an early shock as I was informed that one of the contestants, Madi Fleming, was disappointed that having seen her before performing at a fashion show, being very impressed with her debut as a solo act at the young age of ten year’s old, I duly reported her in this column and unfortunately put in a photograph of a completely different girl. I am happy to make amends for this senior moment with a picture of Madi this week. The competition was split into two categories, under sixteens and over sixteens. Judging was extremely close before we agreed on the winner and runner up in each category. The winner of the senior section was Ryan Beeden, who was cajoled by his pals to enter after success as a karaoke singer. He was exceptional, and after learning that he worked in the civil service at the immigration department, he was the victim of a wicked joke from me, to much amusement and cheers from the capacity crowd. Second in this category was Damien Brown who performed what I can only describe as a couple of truly fantastic body popping street dances, making me realise that I am a decrepit unfit old man, although it did remind me of my early attempts at dancing the night away at Josephines…….. not. The junior section was extremely close, with the winner, Beth Flanagan, at fifteen years of age being the oldest in this category. She was extremely polished, being advantaged by having performed a few gigs for charity, and second place was taken by ten year old Kyle Tomlinson, who is a lovely lad and was superb, as he was in the semi-final. It was particularly pleasing to see that each act had upped their game from the heats, and had taken on board the constructive comments of the judges. I urge all the acts that did not win to persevere with their performance, as I feel confident that they all have a bright future .Stephanie King has a rich vein of talent at present benefitting from her tutelage and the future of her stage academy seems to be very rosy. The ever popular Junkyard Dog, featuring top exHuman League guitarist Russ Dennett, are back in business again, with ex member Steve Middleton

returning after an absence of two years to replace Pete Morgan, who has been a sterling performer for this band with a tremendous following. Gary Sinclair reports to me that he is ecstatic about how his new bar has taken off. Maggy May’s bar, situated on Trippett Lane in the building that some readers will remember as Alibi, has really taken off, and Gary’s intuition that there was nowhere catering for the over thirties in Sheffield has proved correct. I attended the opening night, and was really impressed, with a venue filled with nice people, well run, with plenty of staff ensuring that one did not have to queue for a drink, together with great security, made for a perfect night out. Monday night was the end of an era for me personally, as I attended the leaving party at the Victoria for Johnny and Von Howe, and what a night it turned out to be. It has been an uphill battle for this lovely couple with support from the locals being very disappointing, despite the fact that there has been some very good entertainment every weekend. Clubland was much in evidence to give them a good send off, with a fabulous evening hosted by the very capable Mark Kay who turned in a great performance. There were superb guest appearances by Sunny Daye, fresh from her trip to Los Angeles, Bjorn Again star Diana Edwards, Gary Phillips and Larry Anderson, a song from Johnny himself and a great performance from Ex-Fortunes singer Glen Dale accompanied by his son David. I shall miss Johnny and Von and the mucky dripping sandwiches. The tragic news of the death of the wonderful Gary Speed in awful circumstances has shocked the nation. I know you will join me in conveying my deepest sympathy to his family.

WAR OF THE WORLDS…THE NEW GENERATION!
I was on a plane to Switzerland with my wife. Halfway through the flight, a man jumped out of his seat and pulled out a gun. “This is a hijack!” he screamed. “If anyone makes a move, I’ll kill ‘em!” My wife held my hand for comfort. I looked into her eyes, smiled, and then pushed her into the aisle. The hijacker shot her in the head, before being wrestled to the ground by a couple of passengers. Everyone on the plane looked at me in disbelief at what I had just done. I said, “Before you ask, we were on our way to the Dignitas clinic for an assisted suicide, so I did us all a favour.” After a few moments silence, an air hostess said, “Well... I suppose her suffering is over now. Was she in a lot of pain?” “No, she was fine,” I replied. “I’m the one who’s dying. I just wanted one last laugh before I go.”
The Martians are back, for a new generation… One of the most successful stage shows of recent times, Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds, returns to UK Arenas with a new star and another technological leap forward. On November 18, 2011 ‘The New Generation’ of Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The Worlds launched in conjunction with Sony Music, Live Nation and SJM Concerts, featuring a new interpretation of the classic recording followed by a major international arena tour commencing November 2012. The tour comes to the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Sunday 9th December. Internationally acclaimed actor Liam Neeson will be seen in 3D holography as the story’s narrator and leading a new cast. Neeson will be seen in 3 ways: appearing as the first full body hologram seen on stage interacting with live actors, as an 11-foot high holographic head and shoulders hovering above the stage, and appearing within the 2-hour CGI film projected onto the incredible 100 foot wide ‘animation wall’ which adds a true epic scale to the production. After 33 years since its original release, Liam takes over from Richard Burton, whose holographic head had appeared in the show since 2006, using the original narration from Jeff Wayne’s classic 1978 album, a sound that has lived long in the memory and deep in the psyche of generations who have heard it. Over the years, Jeff was often asked how he would approach composing and producing The War of The Worlds in today’s world, rather than the era of the mid 1970s, when disco was king of the dance floor, punk was the revolutionary music of the day and science fiction was being re-discovered in the movies and on TV. He always answered ‘why fix what isn’t broken?.’ He was proud of the Work and especially of all those who had contributed their varied talents to bring it to life - David Essex, Justin Hayward, Phil Lynott, Chris Thompson, Julie Covington, and of course, Richard Burton. What Jeff never predicted was the extraordinary life his musical interpretation of HG Wells’ visionary and dark Victorian tale would have. Now some 33 years on and as Jeff approached his sixth year of touring The War of The Worlds Alive on Stage! and an animated feature film now in development, this same question kept returning. “After long consideration,” says Jeff, “I concluded that for future productions, some of HG Wells’ storylines and characters should be re-explored. It would also give me the chance to re-interpret my compositions with the production techniques of today, exciting from a musician’s point of view. “But perhaps the greatest opportunity was revisiting the main character of George Herbert, The Journalist and the development of the love story between George and his fiancée Carrie (played by AnnaMarie Wayne). While it may have been the greatest opportunity, it was also the hardest decision to make because I knew that with a re-developed storyline, a new Journalist would need to be sought as Richard Burton’s original performance, was finite. “And whoever that person might turn out to be, he would have to be of no less stature and quality of voice than that of Richard – an incredibly tough act to follow. But once again I have been fortunate and have attracted Liam Neeson to these New Generation productions. He has, so-to-speak, been handed the ‘baton’ from Richard Burton, and I believe audiences and listeners alike will find Liam’s interpretation no less compelling.” By good fortune, Liam is a huge fan of the original album, having purchased it when it was first released in 1978. And ironically, as the ‘new kid on the block’, he acted in a mini TV series on what turned out to be one of Richard Burton’s last roles before his untimely passing. Tickets for Jeff Wayne’s The War of the Worlds – The New Generation at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Sunday 9th December 2012, priced £62.50 & £42.50 (booking fee may apply), go on sale to the general public at 9am on Friday 25th November, available in person at the Arena box office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 and online at www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk
I phoned the police the other day. “What’s your emergency?” they asked. I said, “Two girls are fighting over me.” “OK,” she paused. “Well what’s the problem?” “The ugly one’s winning.” I had a crazy dream that I weighed less than a thousandth of a gram. I was like, 0mg!
round-up by stuart renton
Everyone loves to hate something. For most people, it’s something trivial like Marmite or Twilight or Justin Bieber. For me, it’s Kerry Katona, Katie Price, Jason Donovan, Louis Spence, Ray Quinn, Ulrika Johnson, Paris Hilton, Nick Clegg, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, Peter Andre, Amanda Holden, every judge ever from the X Factor – especially Simon Cowell and particularly Cheryl Cole, that god-awful TV show, Pointless (oh the irony), and Kerry Katona. Those are just the people I hate. I particularly loathe: Westlife, The Wanted, Susan Boyle, David Beckham, Victoria Beckham, screw it, all the Beckhams, Piers Morgan, Michael McIntyre, Peaches Geldof, Sharon Osborne, everyone from every soap ever made, Gavin Henson, beetroot (the devil’s testicles is what they are!), and, last but by no means least, the entire cast of We Will Rock You. And Kerry Katona. There, I think that pretty much covers it! Now, the reason for this week’s unmitigated hatred is that for the past forty years, Bruce Forsyth has been uttering exactly the same catchphrases, performing the same dances, and, doing exactly the same routine, to the point where it’s getting offensive. He seems oblivious to the fact that the world’s moved on from the cabaret of the fifties, and I don’t know about you but I’m tired of the same cringeworthy routines on a Saturday night in front of twelve million people. Apparently, Bruce hopes to ‘present’ Strictly until his last croaking breath (which will probably be a fluffed version of “Nice to see you, to see you, nice!”. But, it’s not nice to see you, Bruce – at your age it’s time to step down for someone younger. At his age, it’s truly a miracle how he stays erect on a Saturday night. And before you ask, that’s not a cheap joke involving Viagra*. In other news: Tulisa shows she’s not a woman to be put down (ooh, there’s a thought, will someone call a vet?) as despite last week’s “controversy”, she defiantly thrust out her arm at the start of the X Factor to reveal her tattoo. Mind, this isn’t exactly the first time she’s flashed one off the wrist in front of an audience** - the little minx! What do you get when you cross a bunch of airheads desperate for fame, money and power and stick them on TV? No, not Prime Minister’s Question Time, it’s the new show, Desperate Scousewives, which is another reality show this time set in the ultravacuous setting of Liverpool. It’s like The Only Way is Essex on steroids and drip fed morphine. If you like your accents as fake as the boobs, and a script ropier than Bruce Forsyth’s links on Strictly, then this is the show for you. Alternatively, you could watch this show… or, you could simply melt your face with a really hot iron. Both have exactly the physically disfiguring results as watching this load of ultra tosh. Awful. Simply awful. More next week, where I’ll be full of Christmas cheer and I’ve promised to be nice for a change!*** *OK maybe it is! Actually, considering the subject matter, it’s best you don’t give that too much thought. ** Allegedly. * Yeah, like that’s ever gonna happen!

Sheffield City Hall beats London’s leading venues to top national award Sheffield City Hall, part of the Sheffield International Venues events portfolio, has picked up another coveted accolade – taking the venue of the year crown at the Eventia Awards. The City Hall took Gold in the Event Hotel or Venue of the Year (>750 capacity) category at the prestigious ceremony hosted by impressionist Alastair McGowan at the London Hilton, Park Lane. Beating off competition from ExCel, London and The Hurlingham Club, the venue was recognised for its excellent facilities, value for money and strong support and events team. Sheffield City Hall is one of 19 entertainment, leisure and sports venues that make up Sheffield International Venues’ (SIV) portfolio, and hosts more than 700 diverse major events every year including music gigs, conferences, banquets and comedy events. Eventia is the main trade organisation for the event industry and its annual awards honour outstanding business-to-business and business-to-consumer events internationally and within the UK. The Eventia award is one of many successes for SIV this year. In September, Sheffield City Hall was named best large event venue in the country by
industry publication, Event Magazine again beating off competition from the Royal Albert Hall; and Chelsea Football Club, iceSheffield was a finalist at the national Conference Awards in June and SIV Events was shortlisted in the Welcome to Yorkshire White Rose Awards Business Tourism category. Dominic Stokes, General Manager of SIV Events, said: “Yet again SIV and Sheffield City Hall have shown the events industry what an exceptional service we can provide. The fact that we are consistently beating internationally renowned venues, like the ExCel Centre and the Royal Albert Hall, in national industry awards judged by our peers, shows there is no excuse for bypassing our venues and Sheffield as a destination. “This quality product comes at sensational value for money and our challenge is to ensure everyone in the industry knows about it and that every event has Sheffield on its travel itinerary.” Sheffield City Hall has been selected as the host of the National Union of Students (NUS) national conference in April 2012 and 2013 – a three day conference that is estimated to generate over £2 million pounds for the local economy.
Gary Speed tribute plans United’s plans to pay tribute to former player, coach and manager, Gary Speed, are in the process of being finalised. Officials at Bramall Lane have canvassed opinions of how to honour the popular 42year-old, who died at the weekend. Gary made his debut for the Blades on New Year’s Day 2008 and remained with the Club until December last year, when he accepted the role as the Wales national team manager. News of his death on Sunday has been met with astonishment in Sheffield, nationally and internationally. Managing Director, Dave McCarthy, commented: “We want our tributes to reflect Gary, who was a dignified young man. We have received emails from fans with suggestions about what we should do and have decided on a plan that we hope will help fans remember him.” There is already an area in the main park where fans can leave tributes, whilst all Bramall Lane’s flags continue to fly at halfmast, like they have since the tragic news was announced. Meanwhile, Saturday’s FA Cup encounter with Torquay United, will be an emotional time and plans to remember the Welshman include: • Former team-mates and colleagues from Gary’s time at United will be invited to the fixture • A minute’s applause before kick-off • Current players will warm up in speciallydesigned shirts • Players and coaching staff will wear black armbands • Chris Morgan and ex Welsh international Robert Page will lay wreaths pitch side just before kick-off • A significant section of the matchday programme will be given over to memories of Gary In addition, longer lasting images of Gary are set to be erected in the Lane car park before the weekend’s encounter and will remain there for this season. * Fans wishing to have their own personal tributes to Gary in Saturday’s matchday programme are being invited to email in. Please keep tributes as short as possible (no more than 50 words) to enable as many supporters as possible the chance to contribute. Email your tribute (along with your name) to Programme Editor kevin.cookson@sufc.co.uk - due to print deadlines, please ensure they arrive before 9am on Wednesday morning. Please note that SUFC may not use all tributes and reserves the right to edit where necessary.

STARS OF THE FUTURE Once again The North’s most prestigious talent contest rose to a scintillating climax in front of a sell out crowd at Queen’s Social Club, Sheffield 2 on Friday 25th November with the Grand Finale. Any of the eleven finalists would easily have made truly worthy winners and the show provided a fabulous evening of entertainment in the Stars of The Future style which has been revered throughout the region for so long. In the adult category the deserving winner was none other than Mr Ryan Beeden with Damion Brown taking the hotly
contested runner up spot. The proud junior winner was the delightful Beth Flanagan with Kyle Tomlinson filling the equally hotly contested junior runner up spot. The Finale Show was a fitting end to what has been a top class tour this year which has been the pride of the host venues and has nurtured the region’s precious youth talent through the
fantastic coaching of Steph King and all at Cee Bee Variety Agency. Be sure to Hi Readers! book your place at Stars of The First chance for a while to Future 2012. write up on a club visit, due to the number of gigs I’ve been doing! of G String. Great vocals, and they both play guitar as well, producing a unique sound. They have a great programme, covering Abba, Motown, Lady Gaga, The Killers and a load more. I do remember Kim as a backing singer with TSB – who some of you will recall. Don’t miss them if they are appearing at a club near you! Cheers Paul (Rocky Horror)

CLUB SUNDAY MORNING SPORT CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
Sunday mornings might mean a nice, well deserved lie-in for many of us. It’s historically the day of rest and in the past was the only full day off of the week. But for many club men, and later on women, Sunday was a busy morning with not much time for breakfast in bed with the Sunday newspapers. A lot of club sports and games took place and still do on Sunday mornings, with many young men up and about meeting their team mates to take part in football matches, for example. You could see them lingering outside the club entrance before 10 am, waiting to be let in or meet with the others to head off for an away game. Some would look worse for wear after a good Saturday night in the club. Playing football in the cold, on a muddy pitch might not have been the ideal morning after activity but hundreds of thousands regularly did just that with the Sunday morning leagues. Not all clubs were fortunate enough to have surrounding land for football pitches and had to rely on using other clubs’ land so there was often a commitment to travelling even for ‘home’ games. Healthy competition and sportsmanship have always part of the club movement. Sport was also recognised early on as a good way to promote good health. An announcement in the Club Journal in 1898 read: ‘A meeting of football players will be held at the Club Union Office on Wednesday June 15th to consider arranging tournament for the coming season.’ From such small beginnings, national tournaments started to become annual feature with clubs seeking out suitable grounds. After WW2 there was a clash between CIU clubs and the FA which didn’t recognise Sunday leagues even though it was impossible for many clubs to have games on Saturdays. Men were either at work or pitches were being used. The CIU pointed out how ‘thousands of young men joined their first Working Men’s Club on leaving the Forces and efforts were made, and are still being made, to provide them with football contests.’ Clubs could not affiliate to the FA and those places that were could not allow their pitches to be used on Sundays. This was a sore point for clubs in the late 1940s but eventually things changed including the rules. Sunday leagues then thrived and offered pleasure for men and their supporters. Most games would be over by noon, in time for the bar opening. And being club people, there was the compulsory postmatch drink or two!

REVIEW: LACUNA COIL by KT Evans
REVIEW: THE JCQ by KT Evans
To be described as an ‘Italian goth metal band’ may be an instant turn-off for most people… to have longevity and sustainability within said genre is therefore a pretty remarkable feat, one which Milan raised Lacuna Coil have successfully moulded together. Creepy riffs, hard rock suppliers they may well be yes, however they sure know how to pull in the crowds with their performance at Sheffield’s Corporation on Friday 5th November. Although the standard clientele for Lacuna Coil i.e. Evanescence front woman Amy Lee look-alikes came in sure abundance, the secondary room at the largest rock venue in the North of England was pretty packed to say the least. It seemed that although a specific niche they attract yes, their music is versatile enough to win in crowds from across the entire spectrum. Opening with track ‘Spellbound’ from the bands fifth studio album ‘Shallow Life,’ the audience were plunged into a set of melodic vocals in collaboration with intricate rhythmic patterns, producing an unarguably eerie tone. Cristina Scabbia, lead vocalist and intriguing front woman perfectly suits her role as ring master in a sinister circus, enhancing the energy with her fluid stage presence and deep sustained vocals. Other tracks, ‘Out Truth’ and ‘Within Me,’ both off Lacuna Coil’s March 2006 fourth studio album Karmacode, were littered throughout the hour long set for the heavy six piece, along with the group’s latest single ‘Trip The Darkness.’ Released earlier this year, the new track favours a more modern slant to dance and electro synths throughout, no doubt a sign of the times but also an indicator of the progression of Lacuna Coil. Taken from album number six Dark Adrenaline, other singles off the album run much in the same vein, allowing for a more versatile feel to the set. Although not totally winning over all of the two hundred plus audience members, it’s refreshing to witness a change in pace and mood for an already successfully established live band. Let’s hope their fans agree….
Sheffield…where the hell were you?? Ok ok so alternative garage metal may not totally be your thing, but here’s us thinking you could appreciate good music when it played at your local metal hangout! Gracing the stage to an audience less than a turnout at a bottom set maths class, the James Cleaver Quintet however seemed clearly unphased by such poor numbers to their show at Sheffield’s Corporation on Friday 18th November. First support to southern rockers Turbowolf and Leed’s Hawkeyes (formerly Chicken Hawk) the five piece from Brighton arguably had a lot to live up to. Achieving huge hype from the likes of Rock Sound Publication as well as leading rock and metal music magazine Kerrang, the tattoo-clad metal heads let loose with a full on live performance and high voltage repertoire to match their charisma and energy on stage. Performing tracks from their five star debut LP ‘That Was Then, This Is Now’ released on 31st October 2011, a highlight of the set came with the playing of critically acclaimed number ‘The JCWho?’ A certified decibel raising belter, the audience were thrust into the dark and melodic world of The JCQ, who were anything but static throughout their half hour long set. Other tracks ‘Chicken Shit’ and ‘I Do, You Dom We Do, Voodoo’ followed much in the same vein, concluding with front man Jack declaring Sheffield as ‘…the best show we’ve played on the tour so far…’ With months of touring and practicing under their belt, this is pretty high praise from a band who have played at all the major rock festivals including this year’s Sonisphere which witnessed a line-up of Metallica, Biffy Clyro and Slipknot back in July. Having recently been signed to Hassle Records alongside the likes of Cancer Bats and We Are The Ocean, The James Cleaver Quintet have not only got people talking, but have started putting things into motion as well. So why didn’t you show your faces then Sheffield folk? Poor effort! For more info on The James Cleaver Quintet, visit their myspace (myspace.com/thejcq) or their official facebook page (facebook.com/thejcq) for tour dates, updates and their merch store.

WIN TICKETS TO SEE SAXON AT THE ACADEMY Never tired of the road, British metal veterans Saxon will be returning to the UK for the second time this year with a string of live shows in December, stopping off at the O2 Academy on Monday December 19th. Saxon are hot on the heels of a US tour in support of their latest acclaimed release ‘Call to Arms’, where both album and shows replicated the success already enjoyed in the UK with public and critics alike. “This is probably the best album we’ve written and recorded in the last 20 years,” states Biff Byford unapologetically, ”It’s the perfect embrace of our past with a great modern edge.” Lead vocalist and main man Biff Byford keeps leading the pack and mesmerizing audiences with his performances, never shy of energy, drive and enthusiasm. “It doesn’t matter if we are playing for 90,000 people or 2000 people, as long as they are there to see us play, we are happy,” Byford recently commented. Paul Quinn and Doug Scarratt on guitars, Nibbs Carter on bass and Nigel Glockler on drums complete the current line-up. Saxon will be playing unforgettable classics and more recent material from Call to Arms.
To have a chance of winning a pair of tickets to see Saxon at the O2 Academy on Monday 19th December simply answer the following question and send your answer along with your daytime contact details either by email to info@ mercurynewspaper.co.uk or via post to Saxon Competition, 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG What is the name of the album that Saxon released in 1980 that reached the UK top 5? THE STATELEY HOME OF CLUBS IN DONCASTER PRESENTS A CHRISTMAS SEASON OF ENTERTAINMENT What a palace of a club The Parklands Sports and Social is! Located in the extensive grounds of the former Wheatley Hall stately home in Doncaster is what must be one of the finest venues anywhere in our region. This Christmas and New Year, Parklands are presenting a packed schedule of entertainment that will attract partygoers of all ages, and from miles around.
DANCING Rock’n Roll Dances at the Parklands Ballroom have two events this Christmas season with Moonshiners appearing on 6th December and the Rock’n’Roll Knights on 20th December. Prices are only £3.50 and times are from 8:00 – 11:30pm. There are no less than three Ballroom and Sequence Dancing events between now and the New Year. On Christmas Sunday, 18th December, the much acclaimed Tony Spragg will be appearing between 1:00pm and 4:30pm, and tickets are only £3.50 with light refreshments included. The Christmas Eve Dance stars top recording artist Philip Randles between 8pm and 12pm, with tickets at £8.50. Tony Spragg returns for the New Year’s Eve Afternoon Dance from 11:00am to 2:30 pm, again prices are just £3.50.
LIVE ACTS As a live entertainment venue, the Parklands strives to present only the best acts and on Friday 9th December you can enjoy a night “filled with fun, frolics and feathers” with a collection of modern and classic Burlesque dancing. “Back to Burlesque Rouge” are appearing with doors open at 7:30 and tickets are available for just £7.00, which has to be fantastic value for an evening of classic naughty but nice entertainment.
Then to round off the old year and let the New Year in, the Parklands New Years Eve Party stars Abba Fever, one of the highest rated tribute acts around plus the fabulous Soundtrax Disco Again by ticket only, admission is £10 and doors open at 7:00pm with last orders at 12:30am. Food will be available to sustain you for a great celebratory party night. Saturdays in the lounge are always a great attraction, live artists entertain you on most of these nights so why not call in for that very relaxing and enjoyable evening. FACILITIES FIT FOR A KING Having a party? why not book one of their excellent function rooms. Parklands will provide you with a buffet to suit your individual needs at very competitive rates. The Clubhouse is fortunate in having one of the finest maple floor ballrooms in Yorkshire, this as well as other function rooms that can be hired at very reasonable rates. As you can imagine, the clubhouse has fantastic entertainment facilities, but that is only part of the attraction of Parklands. Situated in 26 acres of woodland and open space, the former ICI/Dupont staff club, even includes a two acre fishing lake, which has recently been restocked with 300 tench; these will be joined shortly by 300 bream. At just £4 Day Rate and a 12 month pass for just £30, this has to be great value.
Fishing is only one of the facilities available; others include crown green bowls, archery, weight training, indoor shooting, and there’s even an indoor bowling lane. Becoming a member of Parklands is necessary to enjoy some of the benefits and at only £15 for single membership (less than many gym clubs charge) it just has to be great value.
For more details visit their excellent website: www.parklandsclub.co.uk – or telephone 01302 349 881/344 825, or why not just call in.

Angler’s Corner Racing Form by Clint Walker
I managed to get out this week for a short day session (no DIY dyslexic to get in the way this time!) and fancied another crack at some perch fishing. I took a trip to a local club water which is a bit of an unknown quantity; we know they are in there, but we don’t know how big they go, so I thought I’d try to find out! Bait for the day was the normal mix of maggot, caster and worms, but my feed bait had been prepared the night before; I’m always looking for ways to boost my baits, especially at this time of year, so thought I’d spend a bit of time prior to my visit attempting to improve the odds. I use a lot of dead maggots; if I’ve got some left at the end of a session, then they go in the freezer for later. Currently, I’ve usually got around 3 pints available, so for this week, I decided to use some to lay down a bed of attractive feed. I riddled a pint off to get rid of the husks and skins which accumulate, then split into ½ pints and place in a plastic bag before adding a couple of drops of liquid flavour; my favourite is anything from the Pallatrax ‘Naturals’ range as these are full of natural extracts with no artificial stuff in to catch the angler! Blow the bag up and give it a good shake to make sure all the grubs have a coating, then leave to defrost. As the maggots, thaw, the liquid is drawn into the skin to give them a yummy (if you are a fish!) flavour which hopefully would prove attractive! On arrival, I dusted the maggots in a small amount of groundbait just to absorb any excess liquid. This means I can use them in pva if I need to fire them out in a catapult at range, of just nick a hook through to guarantee a pile of food around the hook. In case you are wondering, I use dead maggots so they don’t crawl away or bury into the silt; they stay near my hook bait and I don’t have to worry! After laying down a bed of baits using a spod, my first hour was very slow, in fact it was worse than that; I never had a knock.....the next hour provided a couple of small perch, then all hell broke loose! I spent around 4 hours actually fishing, but a shoal of perch moved in to the swim and the competition was so fierce that the baits were being taken on the drop! With a feeder! I couldn’t believe it got so chaotic, but at some times, I didn’t even get chance to tighten up before the ‘tip went round and another perch hung itself on the hook. I finished with just over 100 perch to 12ozs (and no other species strangely) in a few short hours when no one else caught so I was happy that my preparation had paid off. Think about your baits and maybe you can find a secret edge too!

The weekend’s top NH action focuses on Sandown and Aintree on Saturday with Fairyhouse hosting three Grade 1 races on Sunday. Sandown presents two of my favourite races of the year on Saturday – the Henry VIII Novices Chase and the Tingle Creek Chase. These Grade 1 top-notchers are always really hard to beat. There is almost nothing quite like the spectacle of seeing the top two milers going at it hammer and tongs over the railway fences down the back at this track and then to see them slogging it out up that punishing finish. The novices have first crack at the course at 1.55, whetting the appetite for the more seasoned chasers later at 3.05. The Channel 4 schedule on Saturday is for 6 live races, four from Sandown and two from Aintree. Sandown: 1.55 Markel Insurance Henry VIII Novices’ Chase (Grade 1), 2 miles: This looks tailor made for last year’s Supreme Novices hurdle winner, Al Ferof, who won a Grade 2 novice chase by seven lengths on his chasing debut and should outclass his rivals here. However he probably won’t be a great price given his connections. The opposition is headed by Lidar and Lancetto who should ensure that the selection gets a thorough test. Eradicate looks best of the rest followed by Ultimate and Megastar. 2.30 Bavaria Imported Premium Lager Handicap Hurdle (Listed), 2 miles ½ furlong: Via Galilei has been presented with an almost impossible task on his last two starts behind the improving Brampour but should find this a bit easier. He has a sporting chance here and might even be decent value given the opposition. Of the others I like the chance of Katies Tuitor who would be the reserve if the selection doesn’t go. European Dream, Tenor Nivernais and Nearby may fight out third place although a prominent showing from the last time out winners First Avenue, Alasi and Edgardo Sol would not surprise. 3.05 Sportingbet Tingle Creek Chase (Grade 1), 2 miles: I fancy that an upset may be on the cards here. From all known form the Champion Chaser Sizing Europe has all the credentials to win but I was mightily impressed by how well Kauto Stone (Nap) ran in Ireland recently and think that he may be able to overturn the favourite at a reasonable value price (he is currently on offer at 10/1). He hails from a top yard that knows the time of day with its inmates and wouldn’t have been entered here if they didn’t think he was up to it. He won easily at Down Royal in a good time and can show them the way home over this stiff two miles. Of the others Gauvain ran well to win first time up and may prove dangerous to the above mentioned pair. Fix The Rib, I’msingingtheblues and Finian’s Rainbow look next best.
3.40 Otkritie London National Handicap Chase (0-150), 3 miles 5 ½ furlongs: In what looks a tight and competitive handicap the two Nicholls runners Niche Market and Meanus Dandy both have good chances but are also declared for Aintree so I prefer to look further down the weights and like the chances of the hat-trick seeking pair Prophete de Guye and Runshan. In a narrow call I am just siding with Prophete de Guye who may go off at a decent price to boot. Any Currency (also declared for Aintree), Ballyfitz, Madison du Berlais and Minella Boys head a further set of dangers. Aintree: 2.10 Betfred Becher handicap Chase (Listed), 3 miles 2 furlongs: Notre Pere has my top rating and may prove dangerous to ignore but I just prefer the chances of Charlie Mann’s Fine Parchment who, to my mind at least, has run two good races so far this year, without winning. He will be a decent price and will find the ground, track and distance to his liking. In a race with plenty of dangers around (not least the fences) Niche Market, Always Waining (goes well here), Meanus Dandy, Any Currency, Rare Bob, Ballyvesey, Swing Bill, Sun Tzu, West End Rocker and Uncle Junior are all likely to go well. 3.20 Betfred Grand Sefton Handicap Chase (Class 2) 2 miles 5 ½ furlongs: Fine Parchment is also entered for this one so if this is the choice he becomes the selection. However, in the belief that he may go for the earlier race so my second preference is for Santa’s Son who was running an absolute blinder in the Grand National until tiring late on. This distance should hold no fears and he likes the track so has a good chance in my opinion. Stewarts House is another one running well at present with a good chance. I also like the chances of Linnel, an Irish raider who ran well in defeat to Leggy Lad recently. Fairyhouse, Sunday: The three Grade 1 races are all sponsored by Bar One: 12.50 Royal Bond Novice Hurdle: It is Laganbank who has my top rating (from NH Flat races) but I prefer the chances of the hat-trick seeking Il Fenomino who may be able to see off Steps to Freedom, Mount Benbulben and Sword of Destiny in a top class contest. Burn and Turn may be dangerous at a big price. 1.20 Hattons Grace Hurdle: This looks like a “Who’s who?” of the top hurdlers in Ireland. If Hurricane Fly turns up he must be long odds-on to win. However Willie Mullins has several other entries so it remains to be seen if the reigning champion hurdler participates. I thought that Oscars Well lacked peak fitness to cope with Thousand Stars last time but he should be sharper now and rates a value call to win here, considering the apparent cloud that seems to over the champion at present. All the others are dangerous to dismiss. 2.30 Drinmore Novice Chase: Gates of Rome fell last time but merits considerable respect and may prevail. Lucky William can give him most to do and may be followed home by Alpha Ridge and Donnas Palm. Selection summary: Saturday: Sandown: 1.55 Al Ferof, reserve Lidar 2.30 Via Galilei, reserve Katies Tuitor 3.05 Kauto Stone (Nap), reserve Gauvain 3.40 Prophete de Guye, reserve Runshan Aintree: 2.10 Fine Parchment, reserve Notre Pere 3.20 Santa’s Son, reserve Stewarts House Sunday: Fairyhouse: 12.50 Il Fenomino, reserve Steps to Freedom 1.20 Oscars Well, reserve Hurricane Fly 2.30 Gates of Rome, reserve Lucky William.

Sunday League
by Michael Clarke
League Cup 1st Round There was one League Cup Round One game on Sunday. It took place at Warminster Road, where Crookes hosted Hackenthorpe A. Despite a brace from Peter Smith for Crookes, Hackenthorpe won the match 3-2 to proceed to round two. Hackenthorpe are currently in excellent form and sit top of the Premier Division.
Premier Division The big game in the Premier Division was between second placed High Noon and last years’ double winners Royal Earl. Royal Earl have endured a frustrating start the season and this became their fourth draw in six matches. The game ended 1-1 and neither will be happy that they could not reduce Hackenthorpe A’s lead at the top. Lanzel Reid scored for the High Noon, with Ryan Hindley scoring for the Royal Earl. Third placed Sharrow United were held to a 1-1 draw by Packhorse Inn. Christopher Ashberry got the goal for Packhorse, which gives them a valuable point in what has been a difficult start to the season. Iftikhar Afzal scored the goal for Sharrow. Greenhill White Hart just edged out Mosborough A 1-0, to give them their second win of the season. Greenhill now sit third bottom, but have played the least games of all the Premier Division teams, with only five games completed. Division One Top-of-the-league HSBC grabbed against title challengers Brunsmeer Abbey. Simon Goodison played a key part for HSBC, contributing two goals to the 4-2 win. Liam Morris and Gareth Lloyd were also on the score-sheet for the league leaders. Brunsmeer’s day got worse as they were leap-frogged by the Arundel, who defeated Arbourthorne EA B at Warminster Road. Goals from Dexter, McNally and Spooner gave Arundel a comfortable 3-1 win. Beighton Magpies won their first game of the season, when they beat mid-table Wadsley Bridge WMC. Daniel Jenkinson and Lee Briddock with the vital goals for Beighton Division Two Andrew Gascoigne score three goals for Rawson Spring, as they beat second placed Penistone Church 4-1. Daniel Parker got the other, as they extended their their lead to six points. Winn Gardens climbed into second with a 5-1 win over Hackenthorpe Villa. Nathan Reid scored twice for Winn Gardens. Richard Brand also converted a penalty for the Gardens. The mid-table clash between City Taxis New Inn and Norton Oaks A ended 1-1. Division Three Tom Bland scored four goals as Woodhouse Juniors made it seven wins from seven. Adam Wragg and Adam Rudge also scored for Woodhouse as they ran out 6-3 winners over Norton Oaks B. Adam Raynes scored twice for Norton. Bottom side FC Darnall gained three massive points when they beat Staffordshire Arms 7-2. However, they still remain fixed to bottom position. An entertaining game at Handsworth Grange School saw Carlton Social see off the Barrel Inn 4-2. Carlton’s win puts them into third place, six points off the lead. U21 Division Sharrow United extended their lead at the top of the U21 Division to three points, following a 4-2 away win over Dronfield Athletic U21. Second placed Dronfield Town U21 were held 1-1 by third placed Mosborough U21. The result does not help either team’s title challenge. Luke Webster and Kyle Holland both scored twice for Greaseborough U21, as they beat Throstles U21 at Barker’s Park. Greaseborough move into fourth with the win. There was more woe for Grenoside U21, who were defeated 3-0 at home by Norton Oaks U21 at Myers Grove School. Ryan Phillips, Matthew Scothorne and Conor Merrison go the goals Grenoside. The loss leaves Grenoside winless.

CRAWLEY TAKE POINTS MATCH REPORT www.themillers.co.uk
The Millers fell to a narrow defeat at the hands of Crawley Town at Don Valley Stadium and ended their run of six games unbeaten in all competitions. The home side took the lead after 20 minutes through Brett Williams but were unable to turn their first half dominance into any further goals. Crawley came out stronger in the second period and goals from Tyrone Barnett and Josh Simpson sealed the promotion chasing side a hard fought victory. Andy Scott made one change to the side that won at Bradford last weekend; new loan signing Sam Wood replaced the injured Gareth Evans on the left. Defender Guy Branston was back in the squad after being ineligible last week, but only took his place amongst the substitutes. The visitors from high flying Crawley were captained by former Millers favourite Pablo Mills, as the two sides locked horns for the first ever time. The Millers came flying out of the blocks and quickly looked to utilise Lewis Grabban on the right hand side, and it was he who had the first chance for the home side, but fired wide after Danny Schofield’s shot was blocked. Two minutes later and everyone in the ground thought the Millers had taken the lead. A terrible back pass put Brett Williams through on goal but with only the ‘keeper to beat the on loan Reading man put his shot wide of Scott Shearer’s goal. However, with the ball appearing to nestle in the corner of the net, supporters began to celebrate and the music came on around the stadium, but to everyone’s disappointment the ball had in fact gone wide and hit the net from the wrong side. The Millers continued their bright start and Alex Revell fired just wide from the edge of the box after good work by Sam Wood. The home side finally made their early dominance count and got the goal that they deserved. Williams latched onto Revell’s flick on and fantastically volleyed the ball over Shearer and into the roof of the net. The pace of the game slowed a little after the Millers took the lead and the visitors had their first real chance of the game after 41 minutes, but Tyrone Barnett blazed over the crossbar from a tight angle. However the home side were soon back on top and

The Rovers made four changes from last week’s team at Barnsley. Out with injury were George Friend, James Coppinger, Shelton Martis and Richard Naylor. In came Sam Hird and loan signings Habib Beye, Herold Goulon and MarcAntoine Fortune. The Rovers defended the North Stand end in the first half. The Rovers kicked off but the visitors were quickly on the attack but were repulsed. In the fifth minute Diouf, on the right, received from Gillett and crossed to the middle but just too high for Sharp. Continuing to push on the Rovers won successive corners but nothing came from them. Watford hit back minutes later with Sordell getting in a shot from the right that Ikeme saved. In the 13th minute a cracking shot from Gillett on the right was blocked at the expense of a corner to the Rovers. Another corner followed, which came out to Stock but his effort was also blocked. Back came Watford to win a corner from which Iwelumo got in a shot from close range that Stock blocked in front of Ikeme. Another corner to the visitors was cleared. In the 19th minute Diouf, on the Rovers right, crossed low to the far post where it was deflected for a corner as Sharp and Fortune closed in. Two minutes later Yeates on the Watford right had a terrific drive beaten out by Ikeme. Minutes later a cross from the Watford right gave Iwelumo a header that Ikeme saved. Past the half hour and successive corners to the Rovers came to nothing. Then Kightly came in from the left into the penalty area but shot wide of the far post. The

Rovers were having their fair share of the play but were up against a tight defence. In the 44th minute Kightly went down the middle of the pitch before passing out to Iwelumo on the Watford right, who had a clear sight of goal but he put his effort high and wide. At the other end a corner to the Rovers was cleared off the line and came out to Stock, 25 yards out, but he fired over the bar. The Rovers got off to a cracking start in the second half, with Ilunga getting in a cross from the left that went begging then in the 49th minute a long kick by Ikeme dropped for Sharp, who, with his back to goal, lifted over the keeper only to see it go wide. Then the match threatened to boil over when an altercation between the two teams developed over an injury to Ilunga and then the Rovers, who had put the ball out failed to get it back when play re-started. The match was going end to end but neither keeper was being troubled. Kightly put wide from 25yards for the visitors, Ilunga put a cross in from the left that Sharp couldn’t get a touch to and Fortune put wide from 25yards. A corner to the Rovers was well caught by Loach and a couple of minutes later another was cleared out to Bennett who fired over from 20yards. Beattie for the visitors put over from 20yards in the 77th minute. The match drifted down to the close, with the Rovers trying hard for that elusive winning goal but the referee brought it to an end with each side gaining a point, with a clean sheet for the Rovers but also goalless at the other end.

showing what they could do going forward, Grabban forcing a save from Shearer as he fizzed a shot from the edge of the area. All the Millers first half work was undone in the opening three minutes of the second period as Barnett fired the visitors’ level. The former Macclesfield striker brought down Josh Simpson’s clever through ball inside the box and lashed the ball past Conrad Logan. The Millers responded well to the set back by forcing a succession of corners and Johnny Mullins goal bound header was headed clear by Claude Davis. Minutes later and Mullins was forced into showing his defensive responsibilities as he headed David Hunt’s smart cross away, with Matt Tubbs lurking. The frantic start to the second period continued and it was the Millers turn to force a chance and they really should have done better. Good work from Grabban on the right produced a cross for Wood, but the debutant miscued and couldn’t direct his shot goal wards. The ball then fell to Schofield on the edge of the box but he mishit his shot as well and the ball trickled wide. Two minutes later and it was the visitors who could have taken the lead, but Tubbs couldn’t get enough on Barnett’s flick on and Logan saved well. On 66 minutes the goal finally came and it was the visitors who got it and took the lead for the first time. Substitute Jon-Paul Pittman jinked his way into space on the left and crossed for Sergio Torres. When he fluffed his lines the danger appeared to be over but midfielder Simpson was on hand to score at the second attempt after his first effort came back off the post. With 72 minutes on the clock Andy Scott replaced Williams with Marcus Marshall and a minute later the substitute was involved as the Millers forced another chance. Good work between him and Grabban found Wood in space, but his volley whistled wide of Shearer’s left hand post. The Millers continued to push for an equaliser and with eight minutes left on the clock Marshall wasted another chance as he failed to work the ‘keeper from a decent position after picking up Jon Harley’s deep left wing cross. The home side threw everything at Crawley in the final minutes but could not force an equaliser and slipped to their first defeat in seven as the visitors held on.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2011/12 OWLS MOVE UP TO SECOND MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday advanced into the top two of League 1 with a 1-0 win over Leyton Orient at Hillsborough. Reda Johnson’s first half header proved the difference as the Owls leapfrogged Huddersfield whilst bringing to an end the O’s run of ten games unbeaten. Gary Megson’s men enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and certainly the chances. Orient struck the woodwork but that was as good as it got for the Londoners, who became the latest team to succumb to Wednesday’s impressive home pedigree. Megson kicked off with two of this week’s three new loan signings in the shape of defensive duo James Tavernier and Miguel Llera. Last weekend’s match winner at Tranmere, Ryan Lowe, started up front alongside Chris O’Grady but it was at the other end where the first threat came. Leon McSweeney did well down the right to send a teasing cross into the box and loanee Tom Clarke powered a header that rattled the crossbar. But Wednesday were far from rattled themselves and promptly took the lead from their first meaningful attack on 19 minutes. Ben Marshall laid a free kick off to Chris Lines, who delivered an accurate ball to the back post where Johnson was on hand to nod past Ben Alnwick. The Owls had their tails up and went
close ten minutes later when James O’Connor slipped a neat ball into Lowe but Alnwick was off his line swiftly to thwart the danger. Marshall’s shot was then deflected narrowly over the bar and Johnson found the net again from the resulting corner only to be pulled back for an infringement. The hosts kept up the pressure and Tavernier drilled a piledriver narrowly wide just before the break and still there was time for Marshall to send a trademark looped cross into the penalty area where Johnson failed by a whisker to get a headed connection. Wednesday started the second half brightly and O’Grady was denied by some brave defending by Matt Laird, who twice blocked efforts from the former Rochdale man. Orient struggled to move the ball from their own half but while ever just the one goal separated the sides, the home fans could not relax. The visitors did launch a late flurry, introducing prolific striker Jamie Cureton into the contest. But even though possession switched into the O’s favour in the closing stages - save a late rampaging run forward by Jose Semedo - there was little to worry the Owls’ backline and the hosts pocketed a crucial three points. Owls: Bywater, Tavernier, Batth, Llera, R Johnson, O’Connor (Palmer 53), Lines, Semedo, Marshall, Lowe (Morrison 78), O’Grady (Prutton 89) Unused substitutes: O’Donnell, Bennett Orient: Alnwick, Craig, Cuthbert, Forbes, Lisbie (Laird 46), McSweeney, Spring, Smith (Cureton 83), Cook (Porter 66), Clarke, Mooney Unused substitutes: Chorley, Butcher

OWLS SKIPPER UP FOR THE CUP SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Owls skipper Rob Jones was a special guest of the FA when the FA Cup trophy was brought to Sheffield. Jones was on hand to meet the media and fans as crowds flocked to Fargate to take the rare opportunity to be photographed with one of football’s most iconic trophies. The FA Trophy Tour also featured the Wembley arch and offered a cinematic experience showcasing the FA Cup’s illustrious history as the world’s most renowned knockout competition. Jones said: “There are lots of memories as you grow up watching the FA Cup, it is definitely the cup that excites you the most. The FA Cup is the biggest cup competition on our calendar and one that everybody looks forward to. “I think you only have to see the heritage of the FA Cup and the amount of great games there has been, including some fantastic finals. Teams take it very seriously, not just in the lower leagues but in the Premier League, and that just shows how much it means to everybody. “Millwall got to the final not that long ago so you don’t know how far teams from the lower leagues can go in the competition. “I think we all dream about playing in the FA Cup final but there is a lot of work to do before then.” The Owls host League 2 side Aldershot in the second round on Saturday, with ticket prices reduced to £10 and £5. The South Stand and Kop only will be open to home supporters and tickets are on general sale now.

ALL ABOUT THE RESULT GAFFERʼS REACTION www.swfc.co.uk
Gary Megson says the result of the Owls’ game against Leyton Orient exceeded the performance. The 1-0 win sent Wednesday into the top two, overcoming Huddersfield, who visit table-toppers Charlton on Monday night. And Megson insists everyone connected with Wednesday can enjoy the weekend with the team now in one of the two automatic places in League 1. The manager said: “We’ve talked all week about the importance of this game and that was a hard-fought win. “With Charlton and Huddersfield playing each other on Monday, we needed the win and I’m really pleased we got it. “It’s all about winning when you play for Sheffield Wednesday. I don’t want to be talking to the Press after any game saying we played well, we are improving, but only having drawn the game. “Leyton Orient are a good side, they have now lost only one game in eleven and our players can take a lot of credit.” Megson handed debuts to loan signings Miguel Llera and James Tavernier, although third new recruit Sanchez Watt missed out given the ruling that only five loan players can feature in any one matchday squad. Wednesday have six temporary transfers currently in the squad. Megson said: “I spoke to all the six loan players and explained the situation. The rules are that we can only have five in the squad so one of them will always have to stand down. “But they are a really good set of lads, they have the right attitude and today, I thought Miguel and James did really well in their first games. “They were calm and composed and part of a defence that got a clean sheet. Stephen Bywater didn’t have a shot to save and that says a lot about the defensive display.”

BLADES WIN LOCAL DERBY MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk
Ched Evans was the hero as the Blades recorded a creditable victory on the first ever visit to Chesterfield’s B2Net Stadium. The Welsh striker fired home in front of 2,001 Unitedites with eight minutes of normal time remaining against League One’s bottom club. With just ten miles separating Bramall Lane and Chesterfield’s new home, the derby was always going to keenly fought affair and United rose to the challenge, recording a third consecutive clean sheet in the process. Montgomery and Cresswell both missed the local derby. Montgomery was spending time with twin daughters, who had been admitted to hospital, whilst Cresswell was ill. Doyle took over captaincy duties, and McAllister and Porter were brought into the starting line-up. On the bench, Ertl was included for the first time this season after recovering from a cruciate knee injury. The formation remained 4-4-2 with McAllister and Porter slotting into the positions vacated by Montgomery and Cresswell. Simonsen’s confidence was boosted by an early clean take from a corner, whilst Chesterfield’s goalkeeper, Fleming, did likewise from Quinn’s cross.

Unitedites, in the sold-out away end were boisterous early on, whilst evident in the opening minutes was how much of a factor the wind was going to be, particularly with longer passes. Chesterfield defender Trotman was the first to be booked, for high-kicking action on Porter, who was forced to leave the field for more than four minutes, presumably for stitches as he returned with his head bandaged. The home side failed to make the most of their numerical advantage and the best they could muster was a shot from Obadeyi, which was well over. United’s best chance of the early stages was a move which heavily involved Quinn but his cross was taken off Porter’s toe by Trotman, whilst it was quickly followed by a hammered half-volley from Evans, which stung the palms of Fleming. In between weathering the onslaught from the buoyed home side, United were causing problems for Chesterfield’s defence. A melee ensued from Williamson’s corner on 35 minutes with goalkeeper Fleming making saves from a Collins header and Porter’s shot. An Evans shot was also blocked after a driving run from Lowton. Just before the end of an entertaining half, both sides had another chance to break the deadlock. Bowery and Clarke linked up for the Spireites but Johnson’s shot was pushed away by Simonsen and, at the other end, Lowton’s cross just evaded Porter, sliding in at the back post. The early action in the second half was frantic but all United received from an

Evans cross hitting the hand of Ford in the penalty area was a corner. Those two indivuduals were also involved soon after but Ford’s effort, from Mendy’s cross, was comfortable for the well-positioned Simonsen and then Evans saw his 25-yarder pushed away by Fleming. On 58 minutes, after a Blades corner broke down, the fans saw the lightening pace of Obadeyi, who got the better of both McAllister and Williams on a 70-yard sprint down the right flank but he ran out of steam when it came to a shot at Simonsen. Spireites supporters were on their feet when Clarke’s hopeful overhead kick kissed the top of the crossbar, whilst the Unitedites were the same on 65 minutes but a linesman’s flag halted the celebrations after Quinnn had diverted Lowton’s shot into the net. With little over 15 minutes to go, the first substitution of the afternoon was enforced, Williamson limping out of the action, to be replaced by Flynn, and he quickly forced a save out of Fleming, diving low to his right. McAllister was the next to try his luck but his 30-yarder was too high. United were beginning to get on top and the pressure finally paid off with 82 minutes on the referee’s watch. Simonsen bowled out to Quinn, who held possession well before finding EVANS. The Welshman neatly turned away from Trotman and progressed to the box before firing across Fleming and into the bottom corner. Chesterfield’s response was a treble substitution, which included ex Blade Lester, whilst for United, Maguire continued after treatment and managed to clear one of the stands with a clearance. United’s second change was warmly received as Ertl returned to action, replacing Porter. The Blades managed to play out the five minutes of added time comfortably, most of it in the Chesterfield half, and could have had a second but Fleming turned away a Quinn shot, whilst the only notable effort from the home side was from Morgan, who sliced very, very wide.

WILSON PLEASED WITH WIN BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Blades boss Danny Wilson was delighted with how hard his team worked to gain victory in the local derby with Chesterfield. “We worked extremely hard today, we knew we would have to in a game like this. Irrespective of league positions you know what you are going to get in a local derby, but I have to say Chesterfield looked anything but a bottom of table team, they were excellent at times today,” said Wilson. The game was settled in the second half by a strike from in form centre forward Ched Evans. “Ched is a quality player, he is always a threat, always capable of scoring a goal like that. His goals to games ratio just ratio is top notch, he is always capable of getting a goal out of nothing as he did today,” explained Wilson. “We thought we had scored when Quinny got in but it was ruled out for offside, we all thought he had timed his run perfectly, so when Ched scored with that superb strike we were all delighted. “We were superb defensively today, we didn’t look vulnerable at all. Our shape and discipline was very good and we still looked menacing at times, on another day we scored more than one goal with number of chances we created.”
