successfully shortlisted for UK City of Culture 2013 this year, the strategy is based on wide ranging consultation with creative organisations and individuals. From our theatres and galleries to our local artists, musicians and jewellers – anyone in the city who has a role in making and creating culture or who has an interest in improving the cultural life of the city has taken part. This new plan sets out what we have in store
for the city including the 40th anniversary of the Crucible in 2011; the 100th anniversary of the creation of stainless steel in the city in 2013 and an expanded Children’s Festival The plan also includes a commitment to a ten year plan for the Sheffield Arena, support for our growing creative and digital businesses, increasing tourism, growing our superb events and festivals and a promise to take culture to new and unexpected places such
as workplaces, the NHS and parks. Councillor Roger Davison, said; ‘The top priority of the new strategy is to encourage more people to take part in culture in Sheffield. We know that if young people get involved in creative activities at an early age, they go on to enjoy culture throughout their lives.. This could mean getting involved in music, festivals, cinema or theatre right through to visiting art galleries and heritage sites. It

SHEFFIELDʼS NEW CITY CULTURE STRATEGY A new plan outlining how all Sheffielders can get involved in Sheffield culture will be considered by Sheffield City Council leaders next week (Wednesday 22 December). The strategy called, ‘Created and Made in Sheffield’, will set out the city’s culture priorities for the next ten years with particular emphasis on new initiatives for the next 3 years up to 2013. Following on from Sheffield being

also means celebrating the culture made and created in our diverse communities and neighbourhoods as well as our city centre venues. We have excellent support behind us with the annual investment in Sheffield culture in excess of £35 million each year. Paul Billington, Acting Director of Culture at Sheffield City Council added; “The strategy we’re presenting to Cabinet this week is for the whole city - not just
the City Council. It will be shared and delivered by many organisations, individuals and artists. “The Council is committed to supporting the wider arts and culture sector to make things happen. Our shortlisted bid to become UK City of Culture showed the rest of the country that Sheffield is already a city of culture - the plan will allow us to press on and make the many great things we do even better.”

Copley’s Column
Th big story of the week is the decision by David Cameron to implement, for the first time in history, the veto on the treaty for greater financial union among the seventeen Eurozone countries. He quite rightly stood up to France’s Nicolas Sarcozy, who thinks that as we have retained the pound, it is nothing to do with us, apart from accepting raised taxes on the city of London to prop up the euro. I have little or no time for the French, how quickly they forget the liberation of Paris. Of course there are people who do not support his actions, not least of all Little Lord Fauntleroy, Nick Clegg, who would have us being subservient to the French and the Germans, but thankfully, two opinion polls show great support for our prime minister. We are a proud nation, and the majority of us resent the interference from Europe, telling us how to run our own country. I fervently hope that this is the catalyst to us severing all links with the rest of Europe. Membership of the European Union is a complete drain on our economy, and the sooner we are out of it, the better. Opinion is divided, with many scaremongers saying that Cameron’s veto has left us isolated, from what? From countries that are not in a position to pay their bills. Our interests would be better served trading with countries such as India and China. Older readers will well remember the days when we had the trade deal with New Zealand for the lamb, we seemed to be alright in those days, although I appreciate that the world has changed. One thing that is certain is that if we delegate even more power to Brussels, a referendum is a certainty here, and according to the polls, that would indicate that popular opinion would express the wish that we completely divorce ourselves from the rest of Europe. Lack of space last week precluded me from including a picture of Ruth Holmes, the very beautiful front woman for rock band Black Rose, although I suspect that male readers would have willingly sacrificed the first few clues in the crossword for a view of this very attractive lass. I Therefore take great pleasure in including same this week. Ruth is extremely talented, and is filled with ambition, and I predict a bright future for this lovely lass. The bookmakers got the winner of X factor spot on making the winners, girl band Little Mix the favourites. I personally thought that Marcus would win, being a more marketable act, and of course coming second is not always a bad thing, as historically the runners up have nearly always had
a great career. X Factor is a real money spinner for Simon Cowell, as he earns money from every single vote, signs the finalists up to his record label, and also sends the entrants out on sell out arena tours. The money just keeps rolling in, and we all wish we had thought of it. On Saturday, new top bar in town, Maggie May’s had a record night, takings wise, and any joy that owner Gary Sinclair must have felt was tempered by the fact that his lovely dog Jake had to be put down earlier in the evening Jake was a real character, well known in Dronfield, and even been known to make a Christmas draw in the past. Gary was heartbroken when he rang me to tell me the tragic news, and it affected him so much that he was unable to work on Saturday night. God bless Jake, I am gutted to lose my main rival for the title of ‘naughtiest boy in Dronfield’ On the very exciting local football front, both Sheffield teams won, maintaining their promotion challenge, helped by the fact that leaders Charlton could only manage a draw and Huddersfield lost for a change. Hopefully, both teams can achieve promotion this season, and can renew their rivalry in the Championship league.
Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS
I rolled up my sleeves earlier. Which was a bit pointless as I probably won’t smoke them. I was doing a crossword today and I said to my wife, “Six letters...another word for a broad road in a town or city? I still haven’t got it!” “Avenue?” she said “No,” I said, “I haven’t, stop rubbing it in.” I just bought an alcoholic ginger beer. He wasn’t pleased. Did you realise that a woman’s “I’ll be ready in five minutes” and a man’s “I’ll be home in five minutes” are exactly the same? I phoned my work this morning and said, “Sorry boss, I can’t come in today, I have a wee cough.” He said, “You have a wee cough?” I said “Really? Cheers boss, see you next week!” I dig, you dig, we dig, he digs, she digs, they dig. It’s not a beautiful poem, but it’s very deep. I went back to see my doctor today. I said, “I applied the pile cream that you gave me this morning and I got a very nasty reaction.” “Where exactly did you apply it?” he asked. I said, “On the bus.” Grab your taco, you’ve pulled a dyslexic Mexican.

Black Rose Front Woman Ruth Holmes
I’ve given up on Christmas. It’s too commercial, so I’m renaming it “Smoochmas” - a holiday full of compassion for humanity (and no Kerry Katona) - oh what an ideal world that would be! The Mercury is promoting the X Factor this week, so it’s only right that I express how much of a “fan” I am of the show. It truly is a smorgasbord of “talent” that in no way takes second place to ‘ramming knitting needles through your eye sockets’. I personally was deeply excited about this year’s result and I know I’ll be rushing out to buy the winner’s CD when it comes out (coincidentally just in time for next year’s show). But, in the middle of all this effusive praise for what I think is the TV “spectacular” of the year, I need to dispel one rumour. The final (between Little Fix Mix and Marcus Collins) wasn’t manipulated in any way, either through the media promoting one act over another or with that lingering shot at the end of the M&S advert. You can’t draw any conclusion from Wikipedia’s declaration of the winner thirty minutes before the results actually came in. And that whole HMV issue was nothing more than an “administration” error. I’m so glad we got that cleared up! In other news, the world has gone mad. In what universe, should Sir David Attenborough, a man who has spent his life educating us on the wonders of the natural world, have to justify himself on live TV about his polar bear incident on Frozen Planet? If you don’t know, they showed the birth of a polar bear in its ‘natural’ habitat, which, the Daily Mirror revealed was actually filmed in captivity in Germany. Sir Attenborough made the comment that it would be impossible to film the scene in the wild as the mother would kill the cub or attack the cameraman. And while this is pretty obvious stuff, the tosswit of a newspaper felt the need to besmirch the reputation of this wonderful educator. But worse still is that I find people actually agreeing with the media. Why? Because we live in a world where people believe whatever they’re spoon fed (a spoonful of cyanide a day is good for you, kids!). So, let’s just clarify: we’re getting to see the birth of a polar bear, but, rather than wonder in the magic of so rare an occurrence, we’d rather moan about it not being ‘real’. Because, let’s face it, if you’re worried about that, you’re in for a hell of a shock when I tell you about Harry Potter! That’s it! I’m off for a well-deserved rest (to St. Clitty’s Infirmary for the Clinically Distressed), but I’ll be back for my review of the year next week! Happy Smoochmas!

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
Angels This article is about angels. It is not about one particular angel but provides general information.
Angels - dusty grey wings Cherubim - white wings tipped with gold Seraphim - white wings with silver tips Virtues - pale blue wings Dominions - green wings Thrones - deep purple wings Principalities - solid gold wings
One of the most common misconceptions is that our loved ones who have passed over can become angels. Although, a lovely thought, I’m afraid that this is not the case. Angels have lead pure lives and have never lived on the Earth.
The first seven levels of angels can intervene on our behalf in a crisis. They are available whenever they are called upon. The powerful Principalities, on the other hand, come only through God’s command. The Principalities can create miracles, prevent fatalities and turn around even the most misguided of lives.
I have never understood why nurses are often referred to as ‘angels.’ Nurses are paid to care for people and receive free training. However, there are those devotees that would work for nothing, for example, Florence Nightingale and Elizabeth Fry. Now they were angels! There was a certain nurse given the title ‘The Angel of Death.’ How awful that the word ‘angel’ is used in this context!
Earth Angels There are certain characteristics that are common in Earth Angel, for instance; • Emotional and psychical highs and lows • Waking up at the same time everyday • A periods of time where you continually see repeating numbers on clocks, cars, papers etc • A feeling that you have no place in society If these apply, you could well be an Earth Angel!
• Angels are incarnate. They never live on earth in a human body. However, they are able to take human form to accomplish brief missions. • Angels appear out of nowhere and vanish just as quick. • Sylvia Brown an American psychic claims that ‘angels never speak’ but give us information telepathically. • Some angels are given names in the bible, such as, Michael The Warrior, Raphael The Healer, Uriel The Minder and Gabriel The Loving Angel (These were the Archangels that attended Jesus) There are however, no male or female angels. They are androgynous. • Angels have angelic bodies and exquisite facial features. Some people who have seen angels say that they sparkle. • There are eight ranks of angels.
This Earth Angel conclusion is called a Ascension Process. People have many questions about Earth Angels and the answers are often complicated. If you require more information visit http:www. emergingearthangels.com Whether to believe in Earth Angels is the choice of the individual. There are celestial beings that visit us and maybe one day you will experience this for yourself. I saw an angel when I was very ill many years ago. I will never forget the look of radiance.
The Ranks of Angels All eight levels of angels are charged with being God’s mightiest, and the most direct link between Heaven and Earth. They are distinguished by their appearance particularly the colour of their wings. I have listed the eight levels in ascending order, from the least experienced to the most powerful. Archangels - pure white wings

Your last full week before Christmas may well see you extra busy with snaffling last minute gifts, but you’ll probably try to fit in the odd caring gesture too, for a streak of altruism can put you in touch with the true meaning of Yule. Call for more advice…
Saturn, which continues with your sign, forges a fab link to the Sun and Neptune, and in fact if you do feel comfortable with things, you can be the steadying presence which helps to keep it all together for those around you. Call me now for more astral advice…
Try not to try too hard in order to make a good impression. With Neptune providing helpful backup in the celestial wings, this will help to soften this and provide added reassurance - especially if your budget is especially tight just now. Call for more news…

Communication is rarely a perfect process. Fortunately, with Mercury moving forwards, loose ends can be straightened out. Yet if there are still some awkward issues to unravel these may centre on your love life. Possessive undertones are possible. Call for more…
Your energy is freed of the complexities of Mercury reversing in your sign, and plans of all kinds speed up. Yet if the last three weeks has shown anything, it’s that what is an innocent comment to you can be a crunching confrontation to others. Call me for more…

The last few weeks have had so many strands, but the Sun will help you to fully find your feet. Pleasingly, the hard work and good deeds that you’ve put in, in the past, can come back to you positively now and in unexpected ways. Call your prediction line for more…
However crisply you see situations just now Leo, allow for the fact that someone else may have a more fuzzy edged view of Yule than you do - or is it you who is sentimental? Either way, make some allowances. Call your prediction line for more astral advice…
Neptune in Aquarius forges an excellent angle with your co-ruler Saturn. In turn the Sun is also well positioned. All this brings a more settled vibe to your prospects, especially when Venus finally rejoins you midweek, which can see you in demand. Call for more…
You might find yourself doing the things you think you should be doing, without perhaps really enjoying it as much as you might. However, better late than never, and your sparkle will emerge and how so Virgo. Call your prediction line for more news and advice…
A professional breakthrough is possible with news that you have been waiting for finally providing some welcome cheer. Yet romantically, there may be a pause or a slice of doubt, or will it be a yearning for someone from your past? Call for your love scope…

ʻSAFE AND GET READY FOR WARMʼ PLEA TO WINTER COMBAT FIRE SERVICE HOUSE BLAZE SPIKE
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/nl1/Newsroom/ Features/DG_WP199639
Alex Mills, Communications Team Leader, South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue
Older people in Sheffield are being urged to heat their homes safely this winter, as the fire service seeks to curb an annual spike in accidental blazes. South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue attends up to 200 accidental house fires every winter- a 25% increase compared to other months of the year. And with the rising cost of energy potentially leading to residents heat or lighting their homes less safely, the fire service has launched its ‘Safe and Warm’ campaign to encourage families and older people to stay fire safe this winter. Electric heaters, open fires and candles are some of the key risks resulting in fires in the home. With gas and electric prices on average 20% higher than last year, fire safety experts are asking residents to think carefully before using equipment that could put them at risk. Advice offered to residents by South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue (SYFR) includes: Heaters- keep heaters away from curtains and furniture and never use them to dry clothes Open fires- be careful using open fires to keep warm. Use a fire guard to protect against flying sparks and make sure embers are properly extinguished before going to bed Electric blankets- Never use hot water bottles in the same bed as an electric blanket, even if it is switched off Candles- never leave naked flames unattended and only put them on heat resistant surface Diane Malpass, Station Manager in Community Safety, said: “The number of house fires we attend continues to fall steadily every year. But as winter really starts to bite, we do see a seasonal increase in certain types of incident, such as chimney fires or accidental blazes started by candles, heaters or unsafe electrical appliances. “Just asking yourself a few simple questions about the safety of the equipment before switching it on, might be enough to protect you and your family from a serious fire. And where electrical items are concerned, remembering to switch them off after use and before you go to bed is one of the surest ways of ensuring they don’t become a fire risk.” Older people are especially vulnerable to fire, with more than 130 people aged 65 or over injured in accidental house fires in South Yorkshire in the last four years alone. For more information on keeping you or an older relative, friend or neighbour safer this winter visit www.syfire.gov.uk Or call our community safety hotline on 0114 253 2314
As the weather turns colder, now is a good time to think about what winter weather preparations you, your family and community may need to make. Here are some simple things you can do to help you and your family keep warm, healthy and safe through the cold weather – as well as saving money. Protecting your home • Check that pipes are adequately lagged • Check that you have ordered your winter heating fuel • Check that you know where your stoptap is located • Find out if you are entitled to grants and subsidies for home heating and insulation

GOOD NEWS FOR THE PUB TRADE?
Pressure is mounting on government bodies to reduce costs in the pub and hospitality industry as the squeeze on the public’s purse grows tighter. The British Hospitality Association (BHA) has focussed on the unique opportunities presented by the 2012 Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee as its platform for lobbying the support of members in its campaign for cut in VAT to 5%. The BHA is asking members to take an on-line survey, the results of which will be used in future campaigning. The group also wants them to register their support for the campaign via email to the BHA. The letter says: “We believe a reduction in the rate of VAT to 5% for hotel accommodation, entry to attractions and on meals out of
home is the best way Government can help us grow. From January we will be stepping up our efforts to make the case to Government focusing on the lasting legacy a VAT cut would bring through new jobs and increased international competitiveness. “We have already brought together a strong coalition of partners led by the BHA, including the British Association of Leisure Parks, Piers & Attractions, the Federation of Small Business and the Tourism Alliance. “We have the economic evidence which shows that a reduction in would create thousands of new jobs and drive investment in the UK. “And we have begun a series of positive discussion with HM Treasury officials who are
interested to hear more about the contribution our industry could make to the economy. But we will need your help and support to make this campaign a success.” Meanwhile on a positive note, the SIA has cut the price of licensing by over 10%, despite the fact that prices had previously been frozen since 2007. From 1 January 2012, licences for individual doorstaff will be reduced from £245 to £220. The reduction applies to both new applicants and those renewing existing licences. Doorstaff applying for a discounted second licence after this date will pay 50% of the reduced fee. Current fee levels have been held since 2007 and the SIA claims it has reduced the costs further as a result of both Government

austerity measures and continuing improvements to working practices. SIA Chairman Ruth Henig said: “We are very aware of the challenges faced by both businesses and licensed individuals in this difficult climate. “We are committed to driving down costs in the new regime and this is the first step in that process.”
Home Office minister Lynne Featherstone said: “The Government has set a clear challenge to all its agencies and other bodies to ensure they are proving the best possible value for money. “So I have been very impressed to hear how the SIA has been working to improve its practices and processes to ensure that they are as efficient as possible.”

PREVIEW: THE MACCABEES by KT Evans
It would most probably be the biggest understatement in the history of understatements to say that Sheffield metal core four piece Bring Me The Horizon know how to put on a decent show. It would also be a terrific understatement to say that the screamers are masters at working the audience to their advantage…and if we’re going to be talking in understatements, it would also be grossly undersold to explain BMTH as a pretty awesome band. Hell, if their performance at Manchester Central on 7th December is anything to go by, Bring Me The Horizon could quite easy snap the position as best live UK band on the current rock scene…big words? Although somewhat falling under the radar in terms of celebratory bands by the Sheffield general public (it seems however that they are absolutely huge everywhere else) Bring Me the Horizon are down and out famed for putting on gigs not easy to erase from memory. With 7th December by no means opposing this, it has become almost habitual for a broken limbed / black eyed hardcore kid to emerge victorious from one of BMTH’s notorious mosh pits. Sharing the headline spot and touring the UK and Europe with Machine Head, Bring Me The Horizon stole the show with passion and energy in abundance. Performing tracks off all three of their internationally successful studio albums, front man and lead vocalist Oli Sykes didn’t waver throughout the hour long set, instigating mosh pits, circle pits and colossal walls of death only as a standard measure. Upon the opening riffs of belter ‘Diamonds aren’t forever,’ the crowd were flung into a frenzy of arms, legs and limbs, raising the bar to an almighty high and securing the track as one of the bands most successful. Other numbers ‘It Never Ends’ and ‘Blessed with a Curse’ from the band’s latest album ‘There is a Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen It, There Is A Heaven Let’s Keep It A Secret’ also saw band and audience alike let loose, aided by relentless light shows and strobes throughout the set. Arguably one of the bands best live sets to date, Bring me The Horizon are clearly the puppet masters in a huge circus of metal head fans. And if you’ve never seen they play live…why the hell not??! Check out the bands official website www. bringmethehorizon.co.uk or facebook page for tour dates, merch store and online pics.
Injecting some well needed indie rock into the New Year, The Maccabees have announced an extended date to their full UK tour at Sheffield’s Leadmill on 21st January. One not to be missed if you’re down with intricate riffs, catchy melodies and sing-a-long tracks, tickets will no doubt be snapped up very quickly for this upcoming show, so don’t waver at the chance to see one of the UK’s most successful indie bands grace the steel city masses. Formed in 2004, the five piece from London have been touched by both underground as well as commercial success. Having released their first studio album in 2007, ‘Colour It In,’ the album charted at number twenty four in the UK charts and rocketed the band into the scrutiny of the public eye. Failing to buckle under the pressure however, the Maccabees toured the USA with fellow indie / dance pioneers Bloc Party, followed by a full UK sell-out show in October 2007, ending at London’s Roundhouse in Camden town. The groups second studio album, ‘Wall Of Arms’ matched the commercial success of ‘Colour it in,’ peaking at number thirteen in the UK charts with its release on 4th May 2009. Receiving a successful 8/10 from NME Magazine, the album also won Artrocker’s album of the year for 2009, safeguarding The Maccabees as one of indie’s finest product. Inviting Barnsley’s Dodworth Colliery Band to record a brass version of single ‘Can You Give It’ was a B-Side to the single in July 2009, the five piece released three tracks off their album, with ‘Love you Better’ peaking at number thirty six. Not ones to shy away from a festival appearance (but hey, who wouldn’t!) the southern five piece have graced stages across the country since their formation on the indie scene. Regular performers at Reading and Leeds Festival, the band headlined the 2010 Shockwaves NME Tour with the likes of The Drums and The Big Pink along with performing at Offset and Underage Festival in 2008. In recent months, The Maccabees have announced the release date for their third studio album ‘Given To The Wild,’ scheduled for 9th January 2012. With Zane Lowe previewing the band’s first single off the album ‘Pelican’ on Radio 1, fans are to expect something that little more quirky with the release of the next LP. Tickets are still available for The Maccabees when they perform at Sheffield’s Leadmill on 21st January. See www.theleadmill.co.uk for more info.

REVIEW: SKRILLEX by Cam Taylor
BOOTLEG BEATLES
It has been 45 years since The Beatles’ last concert (in Candlestick Park, San Francisco on August 29, 1966), yet the demand to hear their music remains as high as ever. There are no better performers of those incredible songs than the world’s foremost tribute band, The Bootleg Beatles, who kick off a 14-date UK tour on 4th December 2011 and will be paying a visit to Sheffield City Hall on Friday 16th December. The tour is the first for Adam Hastings, who has added his raspingly accurate Lennon vocals to the line-up, replacing Neil Harrison (who has portrayed Lennon in the Bootlegs since their formation 31 years ago). Adam has received unanimously rave reviews from fans following his debut with the band this summer. In fact, the Bootleg Beatles were the first band that Adam ever saw perform live – he met Neil and got a signed poster after a gig at Newcastle City Hall. Adam recalls, “I had three posters on my bedroom wall – Nirvana, one of the real Beatles and the autographed Bootlegs poster – in my mind as a lad they all had equal status, so to be joining them full time is amazingly ridiculous!” The concerts will feature The Bootleg Beatles performing their authentic and note-perfect renditions of the greatest songs from the entire Beatles catalogue. They will be accompanied by their accomplished 8-piece orchestra, who help them faithfully re-create many of the hits the Beatles never performed live. The Bootleg Beatles will be appearing at Sheffield City Hall on Friday 16th December. Tickets are priced at £25 and are available from the City Hall Box Office on 0114 2 789 789.

DAMP PROOFING XMAS DAY PET SAFETY DIARY
Damp Solutions
With just a few days left until Christmas, leading veterinary charity, PDSA, is asking pet owners to Your Answer to Rising ‘paws for thought’ on the big day itself to ensure Damp, Dry Rot & Wet Rot the whole family, including the four-legged members, enjoy the festive season safely. Sean Wensley, PDSA Senior Vet says: “Food, flowing drinks, presents and decorations can all help to fuel the festive fun, but some of these things can spell trouble for our curious pets.” PLUS FULL PLASTERING SERVICE AVAILABLE To help prevent any inquisitive noses from sniffing their way in to a problem, Sean has put together a pet safety diary of the main hazards to look out for on the day.

For a Friendly, Fast, Service
8am – after the rush of kids opening presents there can be wrappings, wires, toys and batteries left lying around. These can be choking hazards as pets often explore new objects with their mouths, whilst batteries can also cause internal burns if they are swallowed and start leaking. Remove tempting items from the floor and keep an eye on your pet as you would a young child. 10am – Pets can be tempted to explore Christmas trees and play with shiny decorations and flashing lights, but this can result in injuries if they are left to their own devices. Why not allocate some ‘pet playtime’ instead, with suitable toys? Take dogs out for a good run around, or play with your cat using fishing rod-type toys. 12pm – With hot ovens and boiling pots and pans, the kitchen is always a hazardous place for pets, but with a big dinner on the go and extra mouths to feed it can be even more dangerous on Christmas day. Keep kitchen doors closed so pets can’t get under your feet. 3pm – With stuffed stomachs, many of us will be taking an afternoon snooze, but our pets may use this opportunity to sniff out an extra treat. However, human food not only contributes towards pet obesity, it can also prove dangerous. Pets can choke on turkey bones, whilst some foods such as onions, raisins and certain nuts can even be poisonous. Watch out for sage and onion stuffing, Christmas cake and mince pies. 6pm – Many of us will be visiting relatives today, and it’s just as important for our pets to buckle up as it is for us. Unrestrained pets can cause distractions, and can cause and receive significant injuries if the car is involved in an accident. Pet seat-belts and harnesses are available for larger pets, or use a secured pet carrier for smaller pets. 9pm – A few final treats such as a luxury chocolate or a nice glass of sherry, can round off a lovely day for us, but alcohol and chocolate intended for humans can both cause serious poisoning for our pets. Make sure you don’t leave anything within reach of even the most prying paws. With a little care and attention we can all relax and enjoy the holidays safely. For more pet care tips log onto www.pdsa.org.uk/ pethealth.

Angler’s Corner Racing Form by Clint Walker
No fishing for me this week, best laid plans and all that........BUT I have been busy with ‘fishy’ things! I’m lucky enough to be able to write for a few other publications in addition to my Mercury column, so I get to find out about quite a few things or ideas which are going on, and try out some products for review which I then describe to readers, so I’m busy at the laptop on most days. My recent position at Pallatrax also means I have to moderate and provide content for our Facebook/Twitter sites (why not pop in to see us?) and our website (www.pallatrax.co.uk) and also supply new content for our soon to be launched new website! Phew! With in mind, I get frequent requests from anglers keen to ‘field test’ our products; between you and me, this really means that an angler who seeks to be famous wants some free bait to allow them to tell other anglers they are ‘in the game’ and give little or nothing in return. I have been asked to manage a ‘Pallatrax Posse’ of around a dozen anglers who are provided with heavily discounted products in return for at least ONE written assignment each month. Catch reports, venue descriptions and product reviews all count, and each angler is under no illusions that failure to comply will result in their team spot and benefits being withdrawn. You look after us...... If I’m truthful, one of two have queried this hardline approach, but why should any bait company support or sponsor an angler and get nothing in return? How is that fair? It makes no business sense at all to give product away for no return. HOWEVER, the response to the challenge has been phenomenal; I’ve had loads of emails asking to be part of the ‘Posse’ so it will provide competition which in turn will drive results leading to increased exposure. The only stipulations have been writing and angling skills essential, brand awareness desirable, loyalty expected.....not really a huge requirement, but would you believe that even following the simple instruction to email me has proved problematic for some who continue to post ‘Yes please!’ on Facebook etc without reading the offer in full...... hardly a good start! That brings me to my final paragraph; has the increased exposure of angling and the necessity for big fish above all else driven an expectation that any angler should be sponsored just because they catch the odd good fish? I think it has, and has also created a hugely competitive market place for those with the skills to write good copy, but has also lead to a breed of ‘give me’ anglers who expect to be rewarded for a few catch reports or the occasional ‘look at me’ picture on Facebook. I don’t like it; when did angling become about what I can get, rather than what I enjoy? I am still fishing because I love it, because I like to be involved in the ‘trade’ and because the people I deal with are (generally) brilliant; when it becomes a competition, then I think I’ll give up.............

Will Big Bucks win the Long Walk again? This Saturday’s televised racing comes from Ascot and Haydock with Ascot having the best race of the day – the Grade 1 Lough Derg Long Walk Hurdle where Big Bucks will attempt to record his 14th straight win on the bounce. The feature race is supported by a Listed Handicap Hurdle, a listed Handicap Chase and a Graduation Chase at Ascot with a handicap hurdle and a handicap chase from Haydock. Over in Ireland on Sunday there is a Novices Grade 1 Hurdle. It always pays to keep an eye on what is happening in Ireland at this time of the year as future Cheltenham Festival prospects are put through their paces. Mount Benbulben has won his last two races but I fancy that Jessie Harrington’s Jetson may have too many guns this time. Saturday: Ascot: 1.55 Shawbrook Bank Graduation Chase, 2miles 5 ½ furlongs, Class 2: If Pasco turns up fit and well he may take all the stopping. His second to Big Fella Thanks at Newbury looks a bit better than what his rivals can muster. The Jigsaw Man, Rougham (did us a favour last year at a big price), Vino Griego, Canni Thinkaar and Aerial look best of the others. 2.30 Lough Derg Long Walk Hurdle, 3 miles 1 furlong, Grade 1: Big Bucks will no doubt be all the rage again here. He has every chance of winning yet again but I doubt that his price will be taking a “Long Walk” in the betting. That said I am reverting to my vain (in the case of Big Bucks) “trying to get the favourite beat” pastime on the basis that at some time it will happen (if I live long enough). I am therefore siding with the David Pipe trained Dynaste who won last time at Haydock in a good time and is probably a little unexposed still at this distance. His current price of 7/1 makes more appeal each way than the 2/7 about the favourite. 3.05 GL Events Owen Brown Silver Cup Handicap Chase, 3 miles, Listed, Class 1: With Neptune Collonges looking a little out of sorts at present the one I like most here is The Sawyer who should be a reasonable price here. This is a tricky handicap however and the likes of Cannington Brook, Promising Anshan, Etxalar, The Minack (won last time out), General Kutuzov and Planet of Sound all have respectable chances. 3.35 The Ladbroke (Handicap Hurdle), 2 miles, Listed, Class 1: Brampour would make a dangerous opponent if he lines up but I suspect that he may have had enough for the time being. The selection is Via Galilei who ran a very good race last time only to be denied by the improving Ubi Ace. The Irish raider Tawaagg looks a big threat as do Alarazi, Desert Icon (won last time out), Third Intention, Abergavenny, Ciceron, Viva Colonia and, at the
foot of the weights, European Dream. Haydock: 2.10 Maxilead Metals Supports Alder Hey Imagine Appeal Handicap Hurdle, 2miles 4 furlongs, Cls 2: Teenage Idol should have a reasonable shout of lifting this prize. The biggest threats may be Featherbed Lane (won last two starts) and Drill Sergeant although Afsoun, Pateese, Sir Tantallus Hawk and Across the Bay also have good chances. 2.45 Maxilead Metals Tommy Whittle Handicap Chase 3 miles, (4 yo + rated 0-145), Class 2: If Miko de Beauchene can recapture the form that saw him run third to Rambling Minster at this venue a couple of years ago he would have a really good chance here. He is now eleven so that may now be beyond him but he still has a decent chance at the weights in my opinion. You Know Yourself, The Sawyer, Cannington Brook, Etxalar (all of the last named three are also declared for Ascot), Merigo, Chapolimoss (won his last two starts) and Aigle D’Or provide the chief opposition. Selection summary: Ascot: 1.55 Pasco 2.30 Dynaste 3.05 The Sawyer 3.35 Via Galilei Haydock: 2.10 Teenage Idol 2.45 Miko de Beauchene Sunday: Navan: 1.35 Jetson Good Luck!

Premier Division Last years’ double winners Royal Earl found themselves frustrated yet again, as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Crookes FC. Goals from Ryan Hindley and Jordan Turner could not prevent them from succumbing to their third straight league draw. They sit in a disappointing fifth place, nine points back from the lead. Crookes are level with the Earl on points but have played three games more. Division One Third placed Arundel played host to second placed Brunsmeer Abbey at Frecheville Sports & Social Club. A single goal from Leon Wainman gave Brunsmeer Abbey the win and ended the Arundel’s unbeaten league start to the season. Brunsmeer are now only two points behind leaders HSBC. Division Two Leaders Rawson Spring recorded a 5-2 away win over Heeley. Jack Poulton proved to be a significant difference between the two teams, scoring an hat-trick for the Rawson Spring. Rawson Spring finished second place in Division Three last season, behind the winners Heeley, but this result and overall league position goes to show that they have acclimatised better to life in the Second Division. Winn Gardens consolidated second place with a slim 1-0 away win over City Taxis New Inn. Paul Wake got the goal to give Winn Gardens their third straight league win. Tim Council followed up last weeks four goals with an hat-trick in Penistone Church’s 4-0 victory over Mosborough B. Oliver Robinson got the other goal, as Penistone moved five clear of fourth placed Heeley. An entertaining game between Hackenthorpe Villa and Hackenthorpe B at Reignhead Farm ended 2-2. The two teams a little over a month ago, and they shared the spoils on that occasion also. Division Three Both Adam Raynes and Otis Thorn scored twice for Norton Oaks, as they beat Staffordshire Arms 4-0 at the Handsworth Recreation Ground. The win ends Norton’s run of four straight league defeats. African Dream Team and the Barrel Inn met at the Caribbean Sports Club, where they both scored two penalties each. The Barrel Inn did take the points though, winning the game 5-2.
Premier Division The only game in the Premier Division took place at Handsworth Working Mens Club, where Everest FC defeated leaders Penistone Church 3-2. Goals from Babjide Fatogun (2) and Mark Wake gave Everest an impressive victory. Lewis Dickinson and Mark Crossfield were on the score-sheet for Penistone. The loss is Penistone’s first in the league since a 3-2 defeat by Millmoor Juniors in late September. Second placed Stocksbridge are now only one point behind with them with three games to spare. Everest are now six games unbeaten and sit in fifth place.

Division One Division One only lost one fixture to the weather, with four games going ahead. The most significant was Frecheville’s shock 5-1 loss at home to Wickersley. Wickersley, despite their mid-table league position, have now defeated both the top two in the division. Frecheville’s result gave Houghton Main an opportunity to extend their influence at the top, which they gladly took. They recorded their sixth straight league win, with a 6-0 hammering of Worsbrough Bridge Athletic reserves. Both Aaron Tate and Josh Care scored twice. The other two goals came from Scott Clarke and Adam Stead. Houghton Main are now four points clear at the top. Penistone Church reserves scraped to a 2-1 win over Slikstone United at the Memorial Ground, with the goals coming from Callum Lee and Jonny Hoyland. They sit third, only two points back from Frecheville. Both Phillip Coulthard and Sean McClare scored twice to inspire Bramley Sunnyside Juniors to a 5-2 victory over Sheffield Athletic. Division Two In the Second Division Boynton Sports hosted Frecheville reserves. It took 17 year old Tommy Bartholomew only four minutes to open scoring for Boynton, and he went on to record yet another hattrick. His three goals were complimented by one from Anthony Holmes to give them a comfortable 4-1 win. The victory puts a run of three straight losses behind them. Kane Tomlinson scored a hat-trick for Millmoor Juniors reserves, as they returned to winning ways. Thomas Hartshorn added a fourth in the 4-0 win over Sheffield Lane Top. The win is their first in the league since late October. Millmoor now sit in fifth place in the table. S&HCFA Rosehill Association Cup Third Round The Third Round of the Rosehill Association Cup also took place last weekend. It proved to be a disappointing day for the league with three of our teams leaving the competition. In an all County Senior tie, Athersley Recreation reserves edged out High Green Villa 2-1. Thomas Rushforth and Ben Lang go the vital goals for Athersley. Last year’s winners Stocksbridge Park Steels reserves were beaten 3-1 away against Crofton Sports. There was more woe, as Swallownest Miners Welfare were narrowly defeted 4-3 by Shepley FC.

MILLERS WIN ON ROAD MATCH REPORT www.themillers.co.uk
A brace by unlikely hero Johnny Mullins helped the Millers to a 3-2 win at Hereford. Mullins opened the scoring from a corner after 12 minutes before Alex Revell doubled the lead with a strike from outside the box. Yoann Arquin and Delroy Facey put Hereford level before the interval and looked to have undone all of the Millers’ hard work, but a second goal for Mullins in the second half sent the travelling Millers fans back to South Yorkshire celebrating a hard-earned three points. Andy Scott made three amendments to the starting XI at Edgar Street following last week’s visit to Shrewsbury. Dale Tonge and Jason Taylor were recalled to the defence alongside Jon Harley, who was cup-tied for the fixture at Greenhous Meadow. The game began at a frantic pace and the Bulls’ midfielder Steven Leslie created a couple of early chances. Firstly a left-wing cross found Arquin but the striker’s header cleared the crossbar, before Leslie set Barkhuizen clear but the winger’s shot was straight at Logan from a tight angle. Straight after Grabban had a sight of goal following a good passing move and struck a stinging shot from the right-hand side of the box but Bartlett pulled out an acrobatic stop. With chances coming thick and fast it looked only a matter of time before the deadlock was broken. And that was precisely what happened in the 12th minute through the unlikely source in Mullins. Sam Wood whipped in a dangerous corner from the right-flank and the ball crept through to Mullins on the far post and the centre-half stabbed home to open the scoring. Leslie continued to look lively for the hosts though and had a golden chance to restore parity. Experienced striker Delroy Facey nodded into the path of Leslie in acres of space in the box but the midfielder could only direct his strike over the frame of the goal with his weaker right foot. The Millers capitalised on the squandered chance soon after through Revell, who doubled the lead for the visitors midway through the first half. Revell received the ball with his back to goal 20 yards out. The striker was allowed to turn and fired a shot across the face and the ball nestled into the far corner, with Bartlett caught cold. Arquin almost halved the deficit but for a great save by Logan. The striker was fed by Facey - who appeared to

A cold but fine day greeted the Rovers at St Andrews for the game against Birmingham City. The Rovers were unchanged from the previous game against Southampton. The home team got the game underway and spent the majority of the first quarter of an hour in the Rovers half but only had a couple of corners and a shot by Wood from 20yards that went over the bar to show for it. In reply Stock had a go from 25yards that Myhill held easily. The Rovers then came more into the game and in the 19th minute Ilunga put in a low cross from the left for Coppinger to shoot from 15yards but it was straight at Myhill, whose clearance went to Stock. He fed Gillett but he put wide of the far post. Then a cross from the Rovers left was headed wide by Goulon. Back came the home team and Carr got in a strike from the right that was deflected for a corner. In 29th minute a corner to City was eventually cleared by the Rovers as the home crowd and players appealed loudly for a penalty for hands. Past the half hour and Birmingham continued to press. Elliott, from the left, put over a good cross that Wood headed wide from six yards. Rovers then attacked down their right to win a corner that Sharp headed over. A couple of minutes later they won another corner on the left that caused some problems in the City defence before it was cleared. In the 41st minute Murphy, on the City left, put in a good cross to the far post but Wood headed over from close range. At the other end, the Rovers were awarded a free kick on their left but it was

shove Taylor in the build-up - but Logan’s fingertip save kept the two-goal lead intact. However it was Arquin that pulled back a goal for the hosts. The bustling striker ran with conviction and cut in from the left flank to hit a right-footed strike and a deflection caused the shot to loop over the hapless Logan. And parity was restored shortly after through Facey, whose persistence alone earned his goal. Taylor had shepherded the forward out wide but neither Logan nor Taylor took authority of the situation and Facey stabbed a shot in from close range. Goalscorer Mullins took a heavy knock whilst making a clearance just before the break but the centre-half battled on until the interval despite a lengthy period of treatment. The defence was reshuffled for the second half with Taylor and Harley withdraw for Michael Raynes and Luke Foster.Mullins reappeared for the second half despite his knock in first-half stoppage time. Brett Williams was gifted a golden chance to put the Millers back ahead after the restart as a ball slipped to him in the six-yard box after some concerted pressure. However Bartlett closed down the shot and saved low with his feet to deny Williams. Leslie had a chance to put the hosts ahead with a leftfooted free-kick from the edge of the box. His dipping strike cleared the wall but didn’t drop in time to find the net, and instead sailed inches over the crossbar. The Millers then re-established a lead with 65 minutes played, with Mullins once again proving the unlikely source. It came in a similar fashion to the first goal with Wood whipping in a right-wing corner and Mullins hooked a neat shot into the bottom corner to make it 3-2. Rotherham looked to take the pace out of what had been a frenetic game and safeguard a hard-earned lead and were happy to clear their lines rather than taking any unnecessary risks. That meant defending deep at times though and with five minutes left on the clock centre-half Mullins showed his defensive quality by putting in a fearless block from Harry Pell’s vicious strike after the Bulls got a couple of lucky bounces in the box. Substitute Chris Holroyd had the chance to settle the result but he didn’t realise that he had two men in support and eventually saw his shot blocked after being shown down the channel. Hereford introduced Nathan Elder to their armaments as they went all-out to try to rescue a point and the burly striker nearly equalised a minute later as he looked to round off a sleek passing move but Logan saved and held the shot. Rotherham held their ground throughout the four additional minutes to claim an excellent win on the road. cleared. As time ran down to the break the home team piled on the pressure. A cross from their right was met with a firm header by Wood at close range but Ikeme made a terrific stop pushing the ball away. A couple of corners came to nothing and the break came with the score still blank. The Rovers went on the attack from the kick off resulting in Stock cracking a shot over the bar from 25 yards. Then a free kick to the home team was headed away by Beye but straight to King, who fired over from 25yards. In the 49th minute, a quick break out of the Rovers defence set Coppinger free on the right. He squared the ball to FORTUNE, who went on to slot past Myhill and give the Rovers the lead. Birmingham reacted by pushing forward. A corner came to nothing then a free kick by Murphy from about twenty-five yards was pushed away by Ikeme diving to his right. However, in the 62nd minute, Ikeme passed out to Ilunga but it didn’t get there and King got possession, Ilunga got in a couple of tackles but the ball ran for KING, who fired past Ikeme for an equaliser. The Rovers were now on the back foot and defending desperately as the City surged forward. Corners were well defended and Ikeme saved well from Murphy. Real backs-to-the-wall stuff by the Rovers defence but in the 87th minute, following good work by Burke on the right, KING fired past Ikeme to put the home team in front, with what proved to be the winner.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2011/12 OWLS AT THE DOUBLE AT IN FORM OLDHAM MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk
The Owls posted a crucial win at in-form Oldham on Saturday with a second half wonder goal from David Prutton and Ryan Lowe’s late penalty proving the difference on a cold afternoon in Lancashire. Prutton stole the show on 62 minutes with a stunning strike that put Wednesday ahead before Lowe iced the cake with a coolly taken spot-kick to collect all three points. Oldham took the plaudits for an impressive first half display but failed to take advantage of the upper hand, allowing Wednesday to raise a gear after the break and seal the win. Gary Megson shuffled his pack for the trip over the Pennines, bringing Prutton into midfield and introducing loanee Sanchez Watt alongside Chris O’Grady up front. But the first action of note came at the other end just three minutes in when Latics skipper Dean Furman drilled in a long ranger that whistled past the post. Oldham - unbeaten in six games and having won their last three on home soil continued the bright start and could have taken lead on nine minutes. Robbie Simpson swung an accurate corner into the mix and former Owls striker Shefki Kuqi was afforded the time to plant a firm header that flew narrowly over the bar. Wednesday responded with Ben Marshall curling a delicious free kick that brushed the roof of the net but Oldham came straight back with Simpson forcing Stephen Bywater into action following a good move in and around the penalty area.
Bywater came to Wednesday’s rescue just before the interval with a fine save after Simpson broke free on goal and the home side saw out the remainder of the first half having shaded possession but not the scoreline. Lowe came on for Marshall at the start of the second period and sniffed out an opportunity ten minutes in but Latics keeper Alex Cisak stood firm and kept out the striker’s shot with a good stop. But Cisak could do nothing about Prutton’s strike just past the hour. The recalled midfielder beat two defenders with some exquisite ball control before blasting into the far corner in front of the 3,700-strong travelling army. The Latics were on the back foot as the Owls turned the screw and Gary Megson’s men duly wrapped up the win five minutes from the end. Simpson was adjudged to have fouled Watt in the area and up stepped Lowe to send Cisak the wrong way and cement Wednesday’s second-placed slot in League 1.
Oldham: Cisak, Yves M’Voto (Tarkowski 56), Black, Diamond, Furman, Simpson, Adeyemi (Smith 75), Parker (Morais 69), Lee, Scapuzzi, Kuqi Unused substitutes: Bouzanis, Mancini Wednesday: Bywater, Tavernier, Batth, Jones, R Johnson, Watt (Bennett 87), Semedo, Lines, Prutton, Marshall (Lowe 46), O’Grady Unused substitutes: O’Donnell, J Johnson, Morrison

Gary Megson was pleased with his side’s determination and character as the Owls posted a 2-0 win at Oldham on Saturday. Although the hosts edged the first half, Wednesday dominated the second and were good value for the win that cements their position in the second automatic promotion slot. Megson said: “This is a really tough place to come to and a lot of teams will leave here with nothing so I am really pleased to get this win. “Oldham are a good side, they are in form and a lot of people had them down as favourites for this game. “But we’re doing OK ourselves right now and I thought we didn’t do enough in the first half to win the game but were much better for the second and we thoroughly deserved that win.” Megson again hailed the Owls’ travelling support which numbered in excess of 3,500 on a freezing afternoon at Boundary Park. He added: “Our players are fortunate to play in front of what are without doubt the best fans in the whole country and it’s not just the quality of their support, it’s the knowledge that they bring to the game as well. “They can see that Chris O’Grady hasn’t scored today but he led the line superbly well and worked his socks off throughout the game. “We now have what will be a massive game next weekend against Huddersfield and Hillsborough will be like it was in the old days. MILAN TOUCHED BY FANS GESTURE SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday chairman Milan Mandaric says he was ‘incredibly touched’ by the huge banner bearing his name that was displayed by Wednesdayites at Oldham on Saturday. The banner stemmed the whole width of the away end at Boundary Park, which housed almost 4,000 travelling Owls as Wednesday posted a 2-0 win that cemented their position in one of the two automatic promotion slots in League 1. The declaration of ‘ХВАЛА MILAN’ - which translates to ‘THANK YOU MILAN’ in his native Serbian prompted Mandaric to tell swfc.co.uk: “I am so incredibly touched by this gesture. It is fantastic to know that I have the appreciation and recognition of the supporters to what we are all working so hard to do at Sheffield Wednesday. “This is what gives me the energy and enthusiasm to do as much as I can for our club. “Above everything else, I have so much admiration for the loyalty they have for their football club. It’s like I said when I first came here, as long as I am here, I will share their loyalty and do what all good chairmen of their club should do.” Asked if he had ever seen anything of its like, Mandaric came back with an emphatic response: “No, never. I am fond of my time at Portsmouth and I also have great appreciation of my time at Leicester too but this was a special touch and I truly appreciate the efforts of these wonderful supporters. “I have the photograph and I will be having it framed for my office at Hillsborough.”

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2011/12
BLADES MAKE IT FIVE WINS IN A ROW MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk In-form Ched Evans took his tally to 13 for the season and eight in the last five games with a brace in the victory over Rochdale. The Welshman netted either side of a Richard Cresswell goal as United made it five victories on the trot. Rochdale have never beaten the Blades and their bad day was compounded when goalkeeper David Lucas was stretchered off just before half-time with a serious-looking injury. Manager Wilson made two changes to the team that defeated Torquay in the FA Cup seven days earlier - Jean-Francois and McDonald were recalled, at the expense of Williams and McAllister. Rochdale included former Blade Jordan in their starting line-up. The preferred 4-4-2 formation continued but the Blades were forced to kick towards the Kop in the first half. The home side enjoyed a lot of the ball in the opening exchanges but the only chance of note came from Quinn, on six minutes, when his long-ranger almost caught out Lucas, who recovered to tip around his left post. Rochdale’s only managed to create a halfchance within the opening 20 minutes and

Ball scuffed well wide, but they did have a great chance to open the scoring soon after when Ball put Adams in the clear. Simonsen, however, was quickly off his line to make a block. Lowton and Maguire were warned by referee Whitestone for minor misdemeanours but United remained on top, with the inform Evans unsurprisingly involved heavily. He fired a long ranger wide and was then denied by Lucas with a first time effort from Quinn’s cross. The Blades did finally grab the lead on 39 minutes and there were no prizes for guessing the goalscorer. A diagonal ball from Jean-Francois skimmed off the head of defender Jordan perfectly for EVANS to slam a half-volley into the top corner. The quality of the finish epitomised a striker inform. Before the break Holden blocked a Williamson cross destined for Cresswell, whilst Lowton powered forward, cut inside and fired wide with his left foot. On 43 minutes, from Lowton’s cross, Quinn smashed a side-foot volley wide, whilst the first half ended on an unpleasant note when, following an accidental collision, goalkeeper Lucas needed lengthy treatment in his goalmouth. He was stretchered off, to polite applause from Blades fans, and replaced by Edwards, who had a couple of touches before the half-time whistle was blown. Evans went close to doubling his tally in the early stages of the second half, but could not keep Williamson’s powerful’s cross

down. The visitors hit back with Jones having a shot blocked by Lowton and then Simonsen had to save from Ball after a mistake by Jean-Francois. United’s Haiti international had not began the second half well but he made amends by supplying the cross for the home side to double the lead on 57 minutes. Quinn and Jean-Francois combined down the left and from the latter’s pinpoint cross, CRESSWELL got ahead of his marker to turn the ball beyond Edwards. Adams snatched a shot well over the crossbar as Rochdale looked to hit back immediately, whilst United’s right flank duo, Lowton and Williamson, looked to emulate the good work from the left moments before but the right-back fired wide with his unfavoured left-foot. The Blades were in total control and a third quickly followed after Jordan was adjudged to have fouled Cresswell 25 yards from goal. EVANS took control of the central free-kick and blasted into the bottom corner, beating the right hand of substitute goalkeeper, Edwards. Within a minute Evans had the chance to complete his hat-trick, seizing on a defensive mistake, but his shot was blocked by Edwards, whilst the rebound saw Cresswell’s shot kicked off the line by Holden. From the resulting Williamson corner, Collins was denied a first goal of the season by a goal-line clearance from Jones and soon after Maguire headed over. Simonsen’s concentration was good when he was called upon to save a deflected effort from Jones, but United were, by now, cruising to victory. Evans again went close to adding a third but fired over after flicking up Lowton’s pass to enable him to volley. In the last ten minutes, Cresswell headed Lowton’s deep cross onto the roof of the net, whilst Wilson gave game time to Flynn, Porter and Montgomery. The final minutes, plus the three added for stoppages, were inconsequential as the Blades kept the pressure on at the top of League One.

GAFFERS REACTION www.sufc.co.uk Danny Wilson was pleased that the winning run continued after watching the 3-0 victory over Rochdale. Two goals from Ched Evans and a Richard Cresswell strike gave the Blades the spoils in a game that left the manager very satisfied. “We got stronger as the game went on, scoring the first goal in a game like that is very important,” said Wilson. “We didn’t have any problems defensively and got stronger and stronger, going forward, as the game went on. A strong performance with a clean sheet always delights us and we put the game to bed early, which made the last 20 minutes much easier.” When asked about his in-form Welsh striker, Wilson was full of praise: “Like every player it’s about confidence and Ched is no exception. When a player is confident you get to see what they are really made of. “He is not scared of missing, because he knows when the next chance comes along he will score, we encourage him, like we encourage all the players, to shoot and at this moment in time everything he hits is going in.” When asked about the bigger picture, in terms of the league table, the experienced Blades manager added: “No one will run away with the league, by the time the end of season comes there will be a cigarette paper between the teams, that’s for sure.”

FAM TYP ILY ICAL CA RF RO M
ON LY £ 40! Probably every driver reading this has had the unpleasant experience of opening their curtains on a wet, wintry morning only to see the car leaning over to one side as a result of a very flat tyre! From sheer inconvenience, to the frustration of missing bits in the boot, to the outright danger of a high speed puncture on the motorway, the tyres on your car are a crucial matter for you and your family.
Known now as “Pothole City”, Sheffield has for several years been voted the home of the country’s worst roads, and the recent cuts in public budgets do not bode well for any immediate improvements in the situation. Fortunately, there is now a local company that can put you back in the driving seat! Darren Mills runs Sheffield’s only Puncturesafe franchise – an internationally recognised product which has developed a unique preventative solution to protect your tyres from punctures.
Developed and manufactured in the UK, Puncturesafe is a non-toxic, liquid polymer gel which is injected inside the tyre and helps to prevent flat tyres. It can be installed within minutes through the valve without even having to remove the wheels.
Darren stresses that the key is prevention – “The whole point is to stop the puncture from happening; we can’t do anything if it already has, but we can guarantee that it won’t happen again.” “I have tried and tested it myself; I honestly believe in the product we supply.”
Prior to undertaking the work, Darren carries a demonstration kit which explains the process step by step.
A single Puncturesafe treatment will last for the life of the tyre, and can also improve fuel economy and extend the life of the tyre. Puncturesafe UK is the official supplier to the Royal Mail Group with the exclusive puncture prevention used for its 32,000 vehicle fleet.
Puncturesafe offer a mobile service, whether at your home or workplace, and it typically takes less than twenty minutes to treat a full vehicle. There are innumerable circumstances in which Puncturesafe’s unique solution can be of benefit. It is ideal for LPG drivers, who are unable to carry a spare tyre. It offers peace of mind – a son or daughter driving home from University, an elderly or disabled driver who faces the daily stress of potential problems, the worry of collecting small children – the list is endless! And Puncturesafe is not just for cars – caravans, bicycles, mobility scooters – in fact any type of pneumatic tyre can be protected.
