STEP OUT FOR A HEALTHY START TO THE YEAR Having over-indulged over the Christmas season of goodwill, you may now be contemplating the traditional New Year’s resolution to get back into shape? But this doesn’t necessarily mean hours on the treadmill at the gym, as it’s now easier than ever to take steps towards a healthier lifestyle. Over 30 free health walks are now available right across the city, so there’s sure to be at least one in a park or green space near you. Health walks are short walks where people are
encouraged to walk at their own pace, in their local area with trained staff. Walks last between 30-45 minutes and many people enjoy the social contact with new friends met on the walks almost as much as the exercise. Walking is a relaxing and enjoyable way to keep healthy and, as it doesn’t require any special equipment or expense, it’s the prefect way to exercise. It is sufficiently active to improve fitness and gain the many health benefits associated with exercise. Regular walking can
improve general health and fitness, and also cope with stress and depression. Most people find it actually reduces tiredness and gives them more energy for everyday tasks as well as helping them achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. Doctors say it can reduce the risk of many serious health problems in old age and helps to lessen the risk of strokes. Walking is safe and low impact, with a low risk of injuries and accidents. All the walks are free of charge and take place
every week (except bank holidays). Health walks vary in length (between 1km and 3.5km) and are designed for people of all ages and abilities. The proposed activities are measured and risk assessed and must be accessible to all. After some of the weekly walks some people take part in other physical activities, such as a Tai Chi or yoga classes. A dietician has also worked with some of the walking groups, advising and providing information about healthy eating regimes.

Copley’s Column
May I take this opportunity to wish all readers of this column a happy New Year. For me 2011 has had its’ fair share of ups and downs, both in my personal life and on the broader spectrum. Sadly, in November, my twin daughters lost their mother after succumbing after a long brave fight to cancer at the young age of forty five, and this month many people in Dronfield mourned the death of the wonderful Bev Hall, who was just forty eight. Life seems so unfair that we lose people close to us at such an early age, particularly at a time when the average life expectancy has gone up leaps and bounds. The brilliantly written song by Steve Birks aka Vincent ‘Only The Good Die Young’ has a lot of meaning at times such as this. On the bright side, I am proud to have become a great grandfather wit my granddaughter Gemma and fiancé Gary having a beautiful daughter, Freya Rose , who is now thriving after a worrying birth. To say that I am immensely proud is an understatement. There has been some first class entertainment on offer and my first venture out was on Boxing Day. Having a ten year old step-son makes staying in on Christmas Eve a must and on Christmas Day, there are not many places open, although after a heavy meal and a copious quantity of champagne, getting out of the chair was too much of an effort. However, the appearance of Junkyard Dog at the White Swan in Dronfield was too good to miss, and I have to say it was an excellent night. I was pleased to see Jon Clifford in the audience who played in my pub twenty five years ago, who told me he was having a fantastic night and e could well see that I continually praise the White Swan in this column. I have no hesitation in naming this fine hostelry my pub of 2011 and would also like to heap praise on landlord Ray Keddy for running a good house and promoting live music. It was regrettable that I to miss the appearance of top band Firecracker here due to child minding duties. Another must for me at Christmas is Stephanie King’s Christmas Show. This year at Crookes was as good as ever with some superb entertainment. The great work that Stephanie puts in to nurture

the children into such great artistes is much in evidence and is a joy to behold. This marked the final appearance of Catherine Cooper, who has graduated to be a very much sought after artiste on the club circuit and can be booked through the Cee Bee Variety Agency. I envisage that 2012 will be a great year for the following people who all have one thing in common….ambition. Top local boxer, Adam Etches (pictured) who has made a fantastic start to his professional career, under the tutelage of Ricky Hatton. I have known Adam for many years and have seen him progress from being a top kick boxer to where he is today. I predict that this modest likeable lad will go from strength to strength in his chosen career, mainly due to his strict training regime and his fervent desire to get to the top.
Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS
I read in the paper, the other day, that 60,000 kids are gambling addicts. Mine are. They eat my wife’s cooking everyday. Every Christmas I’d come running downstairs to the big pile of presents and start unwrapping them as fast as I could. Sometimes there would be fights over who had the best toys but we would all make up later and sit down to have a three hour lunch before watching TV for the rest of the day. I really miss working at the Royal Mail sorting office. I’ve just been watching “Come Dine With Me” that was in Glasgow, and amazingly all four contestants did the same main course. Battered Mars bar with a side of Tennents Super. I have just discovered that my daughter has been working at a house of ill repute that is known for having the filthiest people who will do anything for money. Yep, she’s become a Parliamentary researcher. I’d never let my children watch big bands on TV, Too much Sax and Violins... My wife is not speaking to me. I walk in on her doing the ironing. “Why are you ironing our duvet cover?” I said. She snapped back “Its not the duvet its my nightdress” What do you get for successfully laying under a cow? A pat on the back.
Howard pictured with top local Boxer Adam Etches Diana Edwards and Sarah Fearnley have worked together for many years as the female part of the world’s number one Abba tribute band Bjorn Again, which has been very beneficial in their new venture, going out as a duo, Agnetha and Frida. They exude professionalism and sheer class, and the only way is upwards in the coming year. John Reilly, lead singer with top local bands Acoustic Angels and Boy on a Dolphin is the finest singer I see by a country mile, and is working with top Canadian keyboard player Lewis Nikitman writing wonderful music which is being played on Radio Two. His album, Zebulon, has had rave reviews, and it is only a matter of time before this very talented man hits the big time. Another great singer and top Wednesdayite, Paul Pashley is another who has a bright future and we shall hear much more from him in 2012

review Rizzle Kicks O2 Academy 5/12/11
We all know the age old cliché that variation is the spice of life, right? So it’s ok then that we are now converted hip hop fans after RIzzle Kick’s ‘boomtingz’ performance at O2 Academy earlier this month? Phewf! Bringing their hugely anticipated live show to Sheffield, the duo from Brighton not only transformed the venue into the trendiest hangout in town, but also made us all want to get our subscription to street dance classes immediately! Main support for chart topping rapper and MC Professor Green, Rizzle Kicks arguably had a lot to live up to. Having stormed their way onto the UK urban music scene throughout 2011, the duo have not only brought super amounts of business to Obey skate wear (go to Dev Green and you’ll get what we mean) but also collaborated with some of music’s hottest stars. Opening with ‘Mama Do The Hump,’ the groups third single and peaking at number twelve in the UK singles chart, Jordan and Harley raised the roof with a spontaneous dance routine to well and truly pitch the level for the night. Anything but static throughout their ten song set, if there was a formula to winning people over, Rizzle Kicks sure as hell harboured it on the night. Performing numbers off the Brighton duo’s hugely successful top ten album to the young crowd, unlike the standard support gig where the audience are familiar with one or two tunes, the group could quite easily have their own headline tour with the majority of songs performed already charted. Proclaiming the next track as ‘probably our favourite and the best one we’ve written,’ the group went onto perform ‘When I was a Youngster,’ a ridiculously catchy, light hearted number which in much of the same vein as their set, suited perfectly the atmosphere of the night. Along with their own, self-written material performed, Rizzle Kicks injected a dose of American indie into the mix with the sampling of The White Stripes ‘Seven Nation Army.’ One of music’s most recognisable riffs, the crowd and group alike went crazy chanting the melody, resulting in colossal cheers and support for the up-coming teen stars. Far too energetic and lively for a support group, Rizzle Kicks arguably outshone the main headliner and if anything, set the bar far too high for Prof Green’s turn on stage. Hell….we love you guys! Check out the bands official website www. rizzlekicks.com for more info on tours, merch and tickets.

Take Care arrived to a chorus of acclaim from critics and consumers alike with Rolling Stone raving that Drake “seamlessly blends those genres (Pop, R&B, Rap) in fluid, rich tracks.”, and New York Times anointing Drake as “hip-hop’s current center of gravity”. NEWS & INFORMATION
DEMENTIA SUFFERERS MUST BE BETTER PROTECTED
People with dementia short changed out of £100 million and must be better protected says Alzheimer’s Society. People with dementia are being cheated out of at least £100 million, Alzheimer’s Society revealed. The charity estimates that up to 112,500 (15 per cent) people with dementia have been victims of financial abuse such as cold calling, scam mail, or mis-selling. It’s new report ‘Short changed: Protecting people with dementia from financial abuse’, today (Wednesday, 14 December 2011) calls for people with the condition to be better protected. Financial expert Martin Lewis is now joining Alzheimer’s Society in calling on Trading Standards and banks to help put a stop to this by appointing dementia champions. These champions would help increase awareness about the condition, and spearhead better working with other local organisations to ensure people are protected. The charity also wants local authorities to safeguard funding for Trading Standards in a climate of cuts. ‘Short changed’ reveals that 62 per cent of carers said the person they care for had been approached by cold callers or salespeople on their doorstep, while 70 per cent were regularly targeted by telephone cold callers. This resulted in people being cheated out of thousands of pounds and suffering stress, exhaustion and frustration. Founder of Moneysavingexpert, Martin Lewis, who wrote the report foreword to ‘Short changed’, said: ‘The scale of this problem is huge. It’s deplorable that people are prepared to take advantage of some of the most vulnerable in our society. What’s more, the true amount of money lost is likely to be much higher as financial abuse often goes unreported. Society must help protect people with dementia - something must be done. Steve Pye, whose 84-year-old father Stan has dementia and was scammed out of over £1,000, said: ‘It’s not just about being out of pocket. Because of these con artists, my dad now finds it very difficult to trust people. It’s also incredibly stressful for the family. When you’re caring for someone with dementia, life is tough enough without having to write letter after letter trying to get back money which is rightfully yours. I’m at the end of my tether trying to resolve the problem and the emotional strain is massive.’ ‘Short changed’ also looked at the problems people with dementia can face when managing their money. 76 per cent of people had trouble managing their money, with the technical nature of security and lack of dementia awareness
CORRESPONDENCE
in banks found to be major problems. People often felt uncomfortable talking about their finances, particularly with family. However, 77 per cent agreed it was important to make plans about how to manage their money in the future. Carers also spoke of the emotional barriers they faced when taking control of their loved one’s finances. Alzheimer’s Society is developing a dementia awareness training programme which will be rolled out to organisations such as banks. The charity is also publishing five top tips for how to plan for the future. These are: 1. Discuss money management with your family – Money can be a difficult subject to talk about but it’s important you plan how you want your finances to be managed if you became unable to look after them yourself. 2. Set up a lasting power of attorney (LPA) - This enables a person with dementia to choose someone they trust to make decisions on their behalf about things such as paying bills and collecting income once they are no longer able to take those decisions. However, LPAs need to be set up while a person with dementia still has capacity. 3. Speak to the local bank manager – People with dementia and their carer should talk to their bank manager as soon after a diagnosis as possible. The discussion can look at extra support that may be available as their condition progresses and ways of managing money, eg using a signature card instead of a PIN number. 4. Stop junk mail and unwanted telephone calls – There are a number of ways to do this, such as signing up to the Mailing Preference Service at mpsonline. org.uk and joining the Telephone Preference Service register. 5. Put a ‘no cold callers’ sign on the door - These can be obtained from the local trading standards department. Six of the major energy suppliers will not knock on doors which have a ‘no door to door salesman’ sticker/sign on them. The survey used for this report is the largest ever carried out on this subject. It involved 104 carers and 47 people with dementia. Focus groups and interviews with nursing staff, social workers and adult safeguarding professionals were also carried out.

OVERVIEW OF 2011 by KT Evans
PREVIEW: Pulled Apart by Horses by KT Evans
Hurrah, the birth of 2012 has finally arrived and (touch wood) we haven’t all died in the zombie apocalypse yet! But what a year we’ve just left behind, with the loss of some of music’s greatest talents along with the rise of the industry’s most blossoming newcomers. Although it takes many years to give a thorough reflection of a year in music, we couldn’t forget some of the milestones that have been sewn throughout 2011. So here it is… Who could possibly forget one of the most tragic losses of last year, with the shock death of music legend Amy Winehouse on 23rd July 2011. We’ll all remember the time and place we heard about this awful news, which unarguably stands as one of the greatest losses in modern day music. With her album ‘Back To Black’ originally released in 2006 now the biggest selling album so far of the 21st century, Winehouse will be remembered for her deep and honest lyrics which won across fans from all over the world. A tragic loss yes, but one which will never be forgotten. From the death of one of music’s best to the rise of another, 2011 has sure been the year for singer songwriter Adele who has pretty much dominated the charts on an international level. Her album, 21 has shipped over 4.2 million sales worldwide, making the southern songstress one of the most successful female vocalists of the century. At the UK number one chart position for sixteen weeks, Adele can do no wrong in both the public and media’s watchful eyes. Sighting a year of song writing and working on her upcoming third studio album, the world really is Adele’s oyster in 2012. Similar to that of Adele and making the most of the platform that was 2011, the global dubstep scene has been hard to miss this last year. Love him, hate him, or really just not have an opinion on him, dubstep producer Skrillex has made a huge name for himself, working with the likes of Korn, Sheffield’s Bring Me the Horizon aswell as chart toppers You Me at Six throughout 2011. Infiltrating clubs and raves across the globe, the dub movement has seen chart domination with the shock number one of Nero’s ‘promises’ on 14th August along with the rising demand for such drop and electric elements within modern day music. No doubt a marmite genre, we predict only more of the same for the upcoming year ahead. Totally contradicting the ultra-modern movement of dubstep, (pause for abuse) Steps recently announced they would reform to hold a string of live shows throughout the UK this year. Who could forget the 90’s cheesy pop pioneers with their annoyingly catchy tunes and even more annoying dance routines which seems to hold a certain soft spot for ticket purchasers in this country, selling out over ten shows for 2012. Playing in Sheffield on 27th April, if you haven’t got a ticket, I wouldn’t panic too much…the five piece have announced all the arena dates will be filmed for purchase. Yay…great! As T.S. Elliot once said, ‘for last year’s words belong to last year’s language and next year’s words await another voice,’ fingers crossed 2012 will be just as eventful as the last. Bring it on.
At long last, finally some decent music is being put on in Sheffield for us northern monkeys to watch. Is it just us, or is Sheffield most often the city to be missed off when bands schedule their upcoming tour dates? We digress. Bringing their infamously notorious live show to Leadmill on 16th February, Pulled Apart By Horses are a band not for the faint hearted, however one which should be missed at your own peril…hell these guys are set to kick some ass! Having formed onto the scene in 2007, Pulled Apart By Horses are sighted as an ‘alternative rock band,’ however in practice do not stick to such guide lines and rules. Famed for their aggressive on stage nature and fierce vocals, the four piece were all brought up in Leeds therefore understand the Northern music culture. Described by The Observer as ‘…surely the greatest live band in Britain,’ it’s clear to see why with their eclectic live shows. The band’s debut single ‘Meat Balloon’ was first released in October 2008, debuting at a commercially successful number eighteen in the UK indie singles chart. A combination of heavy riff based guitar work alongside intricate rhythmic sections, Pulled Apart By Horses went onto release their second single ‘I punched a lion in the throat,’ in January 2009, a track which was make available as a free download on the group’s website. Clinching themselves a variety of festival slots, PABH headlined their first festival, Nastyfest IX in May 2008, which involved guitarist James Brown being sent to hospital after a head injury occurred during his performance. (See what we mean when we say notorious now!) Frantically live performers, the band have also graced stages at Reading and Leeds Festival along with SXSW in Texas, one of the US’s most famous live summer events. Learning from only the best in music, Pulled Apart by Horses recently toured with post-hardcore rockers Biffy Clyro aswell as being personally invited by Muse to support them on their UK Tour last year. Not bad saying the band have only been going for less them five years. 2012 is a big year for the group, with the release of their upcoming album ‘Tough Love’ later this month, something which is expected to feature heavily upon the bands upcoming set at Sheffield’s Leadmill. Tickets are still available for Pulled Apart By Horses on 16th Feb on www.leadmill.co.uk along with dates, times and prices. Check out the bands official website www.pulledapartbyhorses.com for all info.

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
Last year I predicted ten events that would occur in 2011. Seven of these events actually took place. The full Moon on the 9th of January and the New Moon on the 23rd are both significant in the Lunar calendar. They are both lucky days. So lets see what 2012 might bring.............. • The Queen will not be able to fulfill her duties due to a digestive problem and will hand part of the reigns to Charles and Camilla. • Prince Philip will withdraw from public events. • Kate and William will become parents in 2012. I predict a boy. • Prince Andrew will be involved in yet another scandal concerning a yacht. He will also have a health scare. • There will be another earthquake around Asian countries. • A lion will escape from a safari park down south. • There will be a big shake-up in the National Health Service concerning managers. Dementia will be highlighted as a special care category. • A dress designer will become ill. We will see her selling her shops and many will lose their jobs. • We will have a new male Immigration Minister. He will cut figures even further. • Someone will lose their life on a fun fair ride, the carriage will derail. • I see smoke coming from the House of Lords. • A blonde presenter will have a breakdown but her husband will be offered a role as a game show host. • Three young athletes from overseas will test positive for drugs. • A woman will be elected President in America, if not this year in the near future. • Britain will win medals for swimming, running and boxing. • Around July, there will be violent storms in Mexico. • I have been seeing the following numbers so I share them with you 2,4,9,13,16,25,40 and 26. December the 21st is said to be a day of great disaster, this is a prediction of the Myans. They highlighted this date using Astrology. However, Arthromeres and professional Mayanist scholars say that ‘the idea that the ‘Long Count Calendar’ ends in 2012’ misrepresents Mayan history.’ They reject the
Mayan calendars as misinterpreted. Another theory is the ‘Nibiru collision.’ It predicts the Earth’s imminent collision or near miss with a giant planetoid. My belief is that life will not end in 2012 but if you are a believer mark your calendar for 21st December 2012 and until then have a very happy New Year. I hope you have enjoyed reading my articles over the past year. If there is any topic you would like me to discuss please text. This week’s Full Moon asks you not to charge into situations without careful planning and forethought. This would be especially so if you do have an impulsive or a “speak now, sort out later” side to your nature. Call your prediction line for more advice…
You can be a mixture of hypersensitive and outspoken this week Scorpio. The trick will be to know exactly where and when to put the two together, otherwise you could speak out about something you are confused or unsure about. Call for more astral advice…

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO CLUBLAND
It doesn’t usually take long for the first flush of optimism that accompanies the excess alcohol of 31st December to fade into distant memory, as the realities of life return! Resolutions made with all good intent soon drop off – the abject horror of outstanding bills from the season of goodwill become a stark reality, and no doubt it is beginning to dawn on everyone that the financial constraints that made 2011 such a horrible year show no immediate sign of abating! So is there anyone who has cause for welcoming the New Year? The answer is undoubtedly a resounding
YES! for Clubland. Put simply, there is no finer value for money for a good night out with entertainment included. Any forward thinking club should seize the opportunity to go out and re-capture its lost membership, by promoting itself as the centre of local community life. Many local residents have probably never been members, even though their parents probably were. So why not promote family friendly entertainment, and even (dare we suggest?) look at the possibility of offering hot snacks, if not a fully blown food menu? If families are counting the pennies, why not ensure that
they are fully aware of how reasonable the cost can be of a full night out in the Club? There is no doubt the market is there to seize. Over the past twelve months we have been delighted to report on the reopening of a number of venues in the area, and we are hearing stories of plans for more. It proves that, with a bit of thought and determination, there is – and will always be - a market for our unique product.

together to produce a new sound image for Radio Nightingale. We have vacancies for four people to join the existing team for this exciting new development. Specifically the team will work on a series of jingles, information messages and programmes. Ideal team members are computer literate; experience with audio or video editing software would be useful. You will be involved in scripting, recording and editing of jingles and programme features. Good communication skills are essential; team members may be required to provide voice recordings for production work. This role does not involve any live programme broadcasting. Working hours are Monday 5.30-8.30pm, Tuesday 9am – 2pm or Wednesday 9am – 2pm. A regular commitment to at least one session per week is required. Individuals working on Tuesday and Wednesday must also be able to attend the Monday session for training in the first instance and for monthly team meetings. No experience is necessary as full training is provided. The option to be involved in other areas of Radio Nightingale’s work will be available. It is anticipated that this role will be on-going however due to the nature of the work it is possible to accommodate shorterterm involvement. For more information visit our website www.radionightingale.org. uk and download an application form. Deadline for applications 31 January 2012.
HAVE YOU MADE ONE? MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
…I’m talking about that much talked about topic over the dinner table or down the pub, New Year’s resolutions? Personally, I’ve always thought we should be able to make them anytime but after receiving official statistics on the most popular I thought we’d open the lines last week to see if you could guess what the one we make the most is. It’s not to stop drinking, to be more careful with money or to start your Christmas shopping sooner. Adrian from Barnsley called to say he thought it could be to be better natured and nicer to one another, but the majority of callers thought it could be to diet or do more exercise. Surprisingly it’s actually none of these but to change career or job in 2012. Will you be looking around for something else? Alan in Gleadless texted in to say his resolution was not to drink any more, but also not to drink any less either!! Whatever you’ll be doing on behalf of the whole team I’d like to wish you a Happy New Year. We’ll be here throughout with the best of the 60s, 70s and more on 990, 1305 and 1548 AM and if you don’t have one already or managed to receive one in your presents, we’ve got lots of digital radios to hear us in stereo. There’s one to give away every single day from Monday next week.
Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Tune in for details or check our Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. BRINGING HOGMANNY HOME CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
Happy New Year Readers! I hope your celebrations for New Year Eve’s went well, whatever you did. Hopefully some of you were in your local club having a good time with friends and family. Like Christmas, New Year’s Eve was one of those nights when clubs would be packed out: the bar extension and a special concert tempting in any waverers. It’s hard to imagine now, but until 1974, New Year’s Day was not a Bank Holiday in England and Wales as it was in Scotland. Those who stayed to the bitter end, to see in the New Year and see off their drinks and to do the final bit of hokey-cokeying, would have to face the consequences when the alarm rang a few hours later. Many may have sensibly have took it as annual leave but I know where I lived, January 1st was like an unofficial holiday. Those who didn’t make it into work, usually in the car factories, would rally by midday and put in an appearance in the lunchtime session at the local club on New Year’s day. There was usually a queue forming by 10 am to get in and get seats for the family, kids being brought along on this day which often saw several generations of one family around a table. As we had a sizeable Scottish contingent amongst the membership, there would be a piper dressed in the full regalia- kilt, tartan, the lot. Hundreds of thousands of Scots headed south of the border after the War in search of work and better pay. The booming car industry of Coventry was one destination and many found secure jobs, relatively good pay and homes in their adopted city. But they could not be expected to leave behind their own particular New Year celebrations and many clubs began to incorporate these into the annual round of events. The Scottish whiskey would be flowing on New Year’s Day, not only among the Scots but the Sassenachs as well who adopted Hogmanay celebrations as their own. This was fairly typical- clubs are, after all, made up of their members and they all bring with them their own customs and traditions. Hogmanay was a popular celebration in our club, a welcome extension to New Year Eve’s. It’s probably true to say that the huge absenteeism of New Year’s Day made the government realise that having January 1st as an official holiday made sense. Clubs took advantage of this to put on a good party back in their heyday.

Angler’s Corner Racing Form by Clint Walker
Happy New Year! Well, that’s Christmas and everything else over with then......I’m not a Christmas person, for me it’s far too commercialised, expensive and trying; I’ve spent an absolute fortune on stuff that the recipients don’t want or need, and I’ve not been able to get hold of people when I need something doing! Bah humbug! I have, now the madness has died down a little, been able to get out on the bank once again, with another short pike session at Cudmore Fishery. If I’m truthful, it was not a particularly successful outing, although I did manage a jack of around 6lbs on a very slowly retrieved spinner. I also missed a storming take on the float when I just happened to glance at my rod tip, rather than the float tip; watching the tip bend around before I realised it was a pike, I picked the rod up just as the fish dropped the bait! My own fault..... The weather wasn’t the best either, driving rain all day saw many anglers huddled under umbrellas and it quickly became a test of those with the will to fish......and the sensible. I did learn something however, so the trip wasn’t a total washout. My small pike really got hold of my perch spinner and inhaled it almost as far back as it is possible to see into a pike’s jaws; the treble was firmly wedged under the gill spars, and refused to budge, so had to be cut apart with sidecutter pliers before I managed to remove the remnants completely with delicate use of forceps. I did notice a small number of anglers, fishing for pike, who did not carry sidecutters; I would implore all predator anglers to carry the correct equipment so that these stunning fish can be returned safely. For the sake of about £10, you can be sure that they will give someone else much pleasure when next captured when you remove the hooks safely....... I’ve joined a couple of new clubs this year and I’m sure it’s something you may have done too. My last club was a hotbed of politics and ill feeling as a result of a spurious complaint left to fester; (not involving me by the way!) I did spend a little time on committee before realising that I had been co-opted only as a pawn in someone else’s game, and quickly resigned my post. I’ve subsequently been asked back on more than one occasion, but the power games, the mind games, bitching and whinging have put me off for life! It’s a fishing club for heaven’s sake!!! To all of those who serve on committees which get on, has the interests of its members at its heart, and enjoys the work that you do to make your club successful, then I salute you! I really mean it, and if you’re a member of such clubs, then thank your lucky stars that you can fish and know that the leases, work parties, decisions and finances are all taken care of by people who care, not those who carp! (at each other!) Hopefully, things will be better at my new waters...

This weekend’s best racing comes from Sandown where 32Red.Com sponsors the card. The supporting terrestrial TV racing for Channel 4 comes from Wincanton with a couple of handicaps from a card sponsored by Bathwick Tyres. Sandown: 2.05 32Red Handicap Chase, Class 2, 2 miles: King Edmund, a winner last time out, looks to have everything going for him here. Admittedly he has to carry 7lb more than last time but he won a 0-140 handicap at Ascot last time and did so with some authority. This doesn’t look any harder to me and he should give another good account. Pret A Thou is another to have run well last time and may prove to be the main danger to the selection. However, there are two others with pretty good chances on handicap ratings should they recapture some form - Oumeyade is fully 20lb lower than his highest winning mark while Fix The Rib is 11lb below his best winning mark and both could be troublesome to the selection. 2.35 32Red Hurdle, Novices’ Hurdle (Registered as the Tolworth Hurdle), Grade 1, Class 1: In a fascinating clash of decent novice hurdlers Magnifique Etoile gets a reasonably confident vote to land the four-timer. His last race was run in a really good time and the only thing that tempers confidence a bit is his lack of respect for the hurdles. Providing he has brushed up his jumping technique I reckon he can show these a clean pair of hooves. French import Captain Conan is something of an unknown quantity and is having his first outing for his top stable. Prospect Wells also represents top connections but disappointed somewhat last time at Ascot, but that was in a competitive handicap won by Raya Star. He gets my vote to chase home the selection, followed by Colour Squadron and Arab League (who is as yet unexposed). 3.10 32Red.Com HBLB Handicap Chase, 3 miles ½ furlong, Class 2: Exmoor Ranger ran well for this column before Christmas, when winning a 3 mile £56,000 Grade 3 chase at Ascot, and I see no obvious reason to desert him as this course, distance and going should suit him admirably. Victor Dartnall’s ten year old is a stout staying chaser who still may have more improvement to come this year and this race looks no harder than his last one. He is up 7lbs in the handicap but could still be on the upgrade. Paul Nicholls has two entries that may provide most danger to the selection. Neptune Collonges looked to be returning to form last time and is 3lb lower than his best winning mark while The Knoxs sluiced up by 19 lengths in his last chase. That was over two miles at Carlisle in March last year and although he has since won two hurdles, one over this distance, he has not yet won a chase at this distance. Others that look well in on handicap ratings are Atouchbetweenacara, Mount Oscar and Be There In Five while last time out winners Hold On Julio, Key Cutter and Masterofthehall must also enter calculations. 3.45 32Red Handicap Hurdle, Class 2, (4yo+ rated 0-145), 2 miles ½ furlong: Neil King looks to have found a new lease of life in Afsoun and he may be able to follow up his 8 length last time out win at Newcastle where he made all and quickened away 3 out to beat Falcun convincingly. Previously with Nicky Henderson he had a quite impressive CV, winning two Grade 2 hurdles, until seemingly losing his way. The move to Neil King looks to have re-kindled his enthusiasm and although 6 lb higher here he is still fully 25lb below his highest winning rating. His main danger may lie with Nicky Henderson’s entry A Media Luz if his performance behind Brampour at Ascot in October is anything to go by. Others that look quite well treated based on their previous handicap best performances are: Tasheba; Synthe Davis; Ciceron; Heathcote;

3.25 Bathwick Tyres Handicap Hurdle, Class 3, (4yo+ rated 0-135), 2 miles 4 furlongs: Kings Realm gets a narrow vote in a tricky-looking handicap. It is only a narrow call as he has gone up 12lb in the handicap as a result of his last win where he beat Bathwick Man by 4 lengths in a 0-115 handicap at Stratford back in July. That was on good ground and was run in a fast time so hopefully there may be more to come from him. There are plenty of dangers however with two hat-trick seekers (Gallox Bridge and So Fine) in the field and Kells Belle, Decoy, Henry Hook, Tasheba, Cantabilly, Arctic Wings, Numide and Non Dom all looking to have been given a chance by the handicapper. My preference amongst these would be (in order) Kells Belle, Decoy, Henry Hook, Gallox Bridge, So Fine, Arctic Wings, Numide, Tasheba, Non Dom and Cantabilly.

Wincanton: 2.50 Bathwick Tyres Handicap Chase, Class 2, (5yo+ rated 0-145), 2 miles 5 furlongs: Fine Parchment has my top speed rating but looks out of sorts at present. Atouchbetweenacara, Gurtacrue and Minella Thatre look to be well in on handicap ratings and All For Free and Hold On Julio both hold excellent form credentials having each won their last two races. However the selection here is Stewarts House who has hit form with a vengeance since moving to Tim Vaughan in July. He has always been a talented performer and it may be that we have still to see the best of him even though he has just turned 10. In what looks to be a wide open contest Rougham, Hold Fast, Pasco, Mount Oscar, Consigliere and the above named sextet all hold chances of sorts.

SMASH & GRABBAN MATCH REPORT www.themillers.co.uk
The Millers fuelled their push for a top seven spot with a vital three points as they beat Bradford City 3-0 at Don Valley. Substitute Brett Williams’ wonder strike sealed the result after Lewis Grabban had given the Millers a two-goal lead. The first chance of the game fell to Bradford’s James Hanson who latched onto a long ball, before outmuscling Johnny Mullins and firing a powerful shot straight at Rhys Jones from outside the area. The Millers first attempt on goal came after some neat passing between Chris Holroyd and Grabban before finding an unmarked Jason Taylor on the edge of the area whose shot went just over the crossbar. The visitors came close again when Craig Fagan’s ball over the top drew Rhys Taylor from his goal, but Hanson was unable to bring the ball under control inside the area. Some good work by Grabban down the left-hand side saw Danny Harrison receive the ball 30 yards out, but his effort sailed harmlessly over the crossbar. Bradford’s Luke Oliver found himself with space for a shot in the area after Taylor misjudged the flight of a Bantams’ corner, before having his shot dramatically cleared off the line, only for referee Mr. Madley to bring play back The best chance of the half came minutes before it ended when Grabban slid the ball into the path of Danny Schofield on the corner of the penalty area, before his driven shot flashed across the face of goal and just wide of Jon McLaughlin’s goal. Nahki Wells drove into the Millers area seconds
ROVERS TAKE POINTS IN DERBY MATCH REPORT www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk
The Rovers made four changes to the starting line-up for today’s game against Barnsley. Habib Beye was suspended having reached five cautions, El Hadji Diouf has a hamstring problem, Gary Woods and Giles Barnes drop to the bench. Replacing them are George Friend, James Hayter, loan signing David Button and Kyle Bennett. Barnsley made one change from their win over Leeds United, with hat-trick hero Ricardo Vaz Te starting the game in place of the injured Jacob Butterfield. The Rovers defended the South Stand end in the first half. The Rovers got the game going and immediately went on to the offensive, with Sharp being played in to the left side of the penalty area. His shot was saved by Steele with his legs at the expense of a corner. The Rovers kept up the pressure for the next five minutes then, during Barnsley’s first attack, Friend received a leg injury that necessitated Lockwood replacing him in the 9th minute. A corner to Barnsley was headed out of the Rovers defence to Wiseman but he volleyed well wide from 20yards. In the 14th minute, a free kick to the home team in their own half put Sharp away in the inside right channel. He got to the byline before pulling the ball back for HAYTER to slam into the net. Barnsley, all in white, tried to hit back, with Davies twice having a go from outside of the area. The first was comfortably saved by Button and his second effort was high and wide. Midfield play reigned until the 34th minute when Barnsley won a corner. The ball was ‘lost’ by the players before Vaz Te recovered it and fired over from 16yards. Two minutes later and the same player put wide from 8yards following a Barnsley free kick. In the 39th minute Hayter put Sharp away down the Rovers left where he crossed to the near post for the oncoming Bennett to put wide from an oblique angle. As time ran down to the break a corner to the

Rovers came to nothing but in added time a good link up between Bennett and Gillett a crack at goal from the edge of the penalty area that hit Steele in the chest and was put out for a corner. Barnsley got the second half underway but four minutes in good footwork from Gillett allowed him to feed Sharp, who in turn fed Bennett on his left. A rasping shot from 20yards was pushed away by the diving Steele. Then a good run by Done down the Barnsley right and a low cross put across the face of goal found Davies unable to connect. Over the next five minutes the Rovers were on top with just a couple of corners to show for it. Barnsley then won a corner followed by a cracking shot from the left by Noble-Lazarus that Lockwood intercepted and cleared on the hour. Minutes later Bennett had a 20yarder saved by Steele followed at the other end by Wiseman hitting a shot first time from 20yards that Button puished round the post. The corner was headed wide by Davies. In the 73rd minute Coppinger’s shot was deflected for a corner followed by two more. Three minutes later Coppinger hit a half volley that was well caught by Steele. At the other end Davies put a free kick high and wide then Bennett, on the Rovers left crossed for Sharp to get a header on target but Steele saved. Successive corners to Barnsley were well negotiated and Button saved well from Gray. As time ran down play was endto-end with Barnsley trying hard to rescue a point. Two minutes from normal time Sharp fed Coppinger 15yards out but his cracking shot was magnificently saved by Steele. Then, as the Rovers pressed on, in the 89th minuite came the goal that settled every Rovers mind when Coppinger crossed to BENNETT at the far post and from 15yards out he flighted the ball into the far top corner. Into added time and Hassell had a twenty-five yarder saved and McNulty put over the bar following a corner. The final whistle went on a terrific local ‘derby’ that brought three welcome points for the Rovers with a well deserved win

before the whistle but lost his footing and control of the ball as he tried to apply the finish. A good delivery from Sam Wood on the right hand side presented Johnny Mullins with a good chance to open the scoring, but his header went just wide. The Millers almost went ahead when Schofield unleashed a 30 yard piledriver which McLaughlin could only parry into the path of Chris Holroyd who was denied the chance to follow it up after being flagged offside. The deadlock was broken on 64 minutes when Alex Revell bravely challenged Bantams keeper McLaughlin who was unable to collect the ball before Grabban found himself with space to place his shot into the empty net and give the Millers the lead. Minutes later Revell’s defence splitting pass was raced onto by Sam Wood who was brought down in the area by the onrushing McLaughlin before the referee awarded the Millers a penalty. Grabban took the resultant spot-kick sending the Bradford keeper the wrong way and doubling the Millers lead. The Millers added the third in spectacular fashion when substitute Williams picked the ball up wide on the right hand side of midfield, before his looping effort was fumbled over the line by McLauglin. Bradford thought they’d pulled one back when Mark Stewart raced through on goal only to be ruled offside as he slid the ball into the net. The Millers maintained the pressure when Grabban cut inside from the right before firing a left footed effort at the far post, which McLaughlin turned over for a corner. The Bantams battled on despite the scoreline, it was Stewart again providing the threat for the visitors as his header evaded Taylor, before striking the post and rolling harmlessly away from goal.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2011/12 OWLS MOVE BACK INTO AUTOMATIC SPOT MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday advanced back into the automatic promotion places with a 2-1 win over Tranmere. Early strikes from Reda Johnson and Chris Lines were enough to beat the Wirral side, who barely launched a threat on Nicky Weaver’s goal until a late header from Ian Goodison halved the arrears for a result that hardly reflected what was largely a one-sided contest in S6. Wednesday dominated from the first whistle, creating a raft of chances that could and should have made the scoreline more emphatic. But the points were stored and the Owls - in front of a crowd of 24,254 moved into second place in League 1 as a result. Wednesday went into the game armed with the knowledge that 13 of their last 23 games will unfold at Hillsborough and set out to make that advantage count against Rovers. With Clinton Morrison making his first start since mid-September, the experienced striker was also aiming to capitalise and he played a key role as Wednesday found the target inside two minutes. Morrison helped win a free kick on the edge of the area, from which the ball fell to Lines, whose accurate feed into the box was duly headed home by the onrushing Johnson. It was a dream start for the Owls
and with city rivals United having conceded at Carlisle, perhaps the omens were pointing to a memorable day for Gary Megson’s men. And things got even better on seven minutes when Lines doubled the lead. James Tavernier turned his man down the right channel of the penalty area and crossed low for Lines to calmly slot past Paul Rachubka and into the Kop net. The campaign, though, had already taken plenty of twists and turns and the fact that Sheffield United equalised at Brunton Park almost exactly as Lines converted only underlined the likelihood of many more to come. The Owls continued to press and Danny Batth, who scored his first goal for the club at Preston 48 hours earlier, came within a whisker of getting something on Ben Marshall’s inswinging corner - just before news filtered through of Carlisle restoring their advantage at Brunton Park. Morrison then broke down the right and played a delicious ball to the back post for Marshall to swivel and fire into the side netting. The pressure was relentless and only a smart stop from Rachubka prevented Morrison getting on the scoresheet. Chris O’Grady shot agonisingly wide from the resulting rebound. Morrison went closer still shortly before the break when Jose Semedo slotted the striker in on goal but again Rachubka was alert to the danger and was out swiftly to parry to safety. O’Grady had another effort saved by Rachubka right on the whistle, while United equalised at Carlisle to ensure the heat stayed on for both Sheffield clubs in their respective second halves. With the opening 45 at Hillsborough seeing the Owls as dominant in S6
as they have been all season, it was important to keep Tranmere at arm’s length. And this they did, with only Rachubka and a linesman’s flag preventing a 3-0 lead in an action-packed 54th minute. First Marshall jinked his way into the box and drilled in a fierce shot that Rachubka tipped over the bar and when the ball eventually found its way to Johnson at the back post, the defender’s headed goal was ruled out for an infringement. Carlisle’s third goal did count, though, allowing the Owls to leapfrog the Blades if the scores stayed the same. Sanchez Watt came off the bench for Morrison and the loanee forward went close to securing the points but his low drive was deflected wide. Tranmere rallied towards the end and got their reward eight minutes from time when Danny Holmes sent a teasing cross into the danger zone that was neatly headed in by substitute Ian Goodison. Skipper Mark McChrystal forced a fine save from Weaver at the death but that proved the last of the action as Wednesday held on for victory. Wednesday: Weaver, Otsemobor, Llera, Batth, R Johnson, Tavernier J Johnson 87), Lines, Semedo, Marshall (Prutton 90), Morrison (Watt 70), O’Grady Unused substitutes: Bywater, Lowe Tranmere: Rachubka, McChrystal,Weir, Holmes, Bakayogo (Goodison 77), Taylor, Baxter, Buchanan, Tiryaki (Welsh 46) Akins, Labadie Unused substitutes: Coughlin, McGurk, Raven
EVANS REVIEWS ROVERS CLASH SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Chris Evans says the Owls are focused on nothing but the future following the 2-1 win over Tranmere on Saturday. Wednesday might have won by a far more convincing scoreline on another day after creating a string of first half chances against Rovers. In the event, they had to settle for victory by the odd goal in three but the assistant manager was delighted for the three points and the Owls’ second win in 48 hours. He said: “We got what we needed and that was three points in the bag. I’m delighted for the manager, the players, the chairman and most importantly, the fans. “I think the football we played in the first half was the best we have played since we came to the football club and yes, we created a lot of chances but we are forward facing and that is the only way to be. “We will back out on the training field with our main objective in mind and that is all about winning football matches.” Evans acknowledged a string of fine performances all over the field as Wednesday advanced back into the automatic promotion frame at Hillsborough. He said: “There were some great performances out there today from the goalkeeper to the back four, the midfielders and the strikers. “OK, the strikers didn’t get on the scoresheet but Chris O’Grady and Clinton Morrison were outstanding. “Clinton’s attitude in and around the dressing room has been exceptional and he played so well today. “His hard work with Chris O’Grady helped us to those three points and on another day they would have scored themselves. “You look at Miguel Llera and Danny Batth - both were outstanding at the back today. “But we are not stopping here. We are greedy, we have the appetite and we want more.”

WINNING RUN COMES TO AN END MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk
United’s eight-match winning run came an abrupt end in the first game of 2012. Ched Evans took his tally to 16 for the season with a first half double and the Blades hit the woodwork on three occasions but left a cold Cumbria with nothing. Francois Zoko scored twice for the home side, whilst former Blade Jon-Paul McGovern netted the second half winner. United made two changes from Saturday’s encounter against Hartlepool with Montgomery and Quinn returning to the starting line-up at the expense of the injured Lowton and Williamson, who dropped to the bench. Cresswell was available again after suspension but had to be content with a place amongst the substitutes. Montgomery reclaimed the captain’s armband but it was soon apparent that he was filling in at right back in the absense of Lowton, whilst Quinn was a straight replacement for Williamson in midfield. United’s pre-match plans, however, were somewhat disrupted by conceding a goal with less than 90 seconds on the referee’s watch. From McGovern’s clip down the right, ZOKO nudged the ball past the head of Maguire before sliding home past Simonsen, just ahead of the covering Montgomery getting across the box. Collins and Porter could not get enough purchase on a Flynn free-kick but the
Blades did level on seven minutes, from another set-piece. This time Porter was fouled and from Quinn’s inswinger, Maguire headed back across goal and EVANS was presented with the task of touching home from a matter of yards. Evans almost added a second five minutes later but he struck the woodwork from McDonald’s cross after a quick free-kick and the action continued as Carlisle regained the lead on 15 minutes. The Blades half-cleared a corner but Thirlwell delivered back into the box and Carlisle survived two offside calls as Miller laid off for ZOKO to claim his second goal with a diving header. Former Blade Thirlwell was lucky to escape with just a yellow card for a reckless challenge on Evans and the exhilarating fixture continued as United hit a post for the second time on 21 minutes. From a throw, Porter flicked on and Evans laid off for Quinn to fire against Collin’s right post, whilst Flynn was crowded out as he attempted to put away the rebound. Simonsen was forced to push out a McGovern shot as Carlisle looked a threat from another corner on the half hour, whilst United hit back with efforts from McDonald, Doyle and Maguire as the home side began to look nervy at the back. To his credit, though, Murphy did well to deflect away an Evans shot and then the defender got a necessary touch to turn away a McDonald cross. The pressure was mounting on the Carlisle goal and after goalkeeper Collin had pushed away a Porter header from Flynn’s corner, three minutes of added time at the end of the first half was the last signal the home fans wanted to see - and they were right to
be worried. Miller was adjudged to have fouled Evans on the edge of the box and the Blades were presented with another chance to level in injury-time. The initial shot from Evans was blocked by the wall, the rebound from McDonald was kicked away but the loose ball fell to EVANS, who blasted beyond Collin. It was the last serious play of an action-packed first half and, no doubt, would have changed the half-time teamtalks of both Messrs Abbott and Wilson. The start of the second half was not as frantic as the first but Carlisle again started the better and United had to withstand a spell of pressure, which included Montgomery blocking a powerful Robson effort with his head. It was from a home side attack that the Blades almost took the lead around the hour mark, McDonald broke away down the right and from his pass, Evans held off his marker but saw his shot come back off a post once again. Wilson threw on fresh legs as Cresswell replaced Porter and the substitute quickly attempted to chip Collin but the goalkeeper was well placed to pluck the ball out of the air. At the other end, Berrett had an effort saved by Simonsen and Robson fired a freekick over the crossbar. The Blades were forced to defend with a blanket of rain in their faces for a period and it was during this spell, and whilst McDonald changed his boots, that Carlisle went ahead for a third time. Following a ball from the left, McGOVERN played a one-two win Miller on the edge of the box before sidefooting into the corner of the net, beyond Simonsen’s reach. United hit back with headers from Flynn and Cresswell and Wilson introduced
Williamson with 15 minutes to go. Collins was shown a yellow card for a foul on Miller but, expectedly, the Blades did most of the attacking late on. Clear-cut chances were sparse, though, even when Beattie was introduced for the closing stages. Zoko wasted a great chance to complete his hat-trick in the 90th minute, turning over a McGovern pull-back but it proved incidental as the Blades were unable to claim a third leveller in the four injury-time minutes. Carlisle: Collin, Robson, McGovern, Murphy, Thirlwell, Taiwo (Madden 82), Zoko, Miller, Ribeiro, Berrett, Michalik. Unused: Livesey, Gillespie, Chantler, McKenna. Blades: Simonsen, Jean-Francois, Montgomery, Doyle (Beattie 88), Evans, Flynn (Williamson 75), Collins, Maguire, Porter (Cresswell 61), McDonald, Quinn. Unused: Ertl, Long.
