JUMP IN AND JOIN THE UKʼS BIGGEST SWIM City swimmers are invited to make a splash for charity by taking part in the annual Swimathon Weekend at Sheffield International Venues (SIV) operated pools. Fundraisers can take part in the national event from 27 to 29 April 2012 at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Concord Sports Centre, Hillsborough Leisure Centre and Stocksbridge Leisure Centre in Sheffield. Participants taking

the plunge to raise vital funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care’s 25th Swimathon can choose from individual 2.5k, 5k or team 5k challenges and those supporting the British Swimming and BBC’s Big Splash Mile for Sport Relief can take part individually or as part of a team to complete the mile. Lorenzo Clark, director of operations at SIV, said: “We are thrilled to host two fantastic events during the Swimathon Weekend

at four of SIV’s pools. Whether participants raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care during the Swimathon or complete a mile for Sport Relief, we hope the events inspire everyone to take the plunge regularly throughout 2012. “The Swimathon Weekend is a fantastic opportunity for swimmers of all ages and abilities to take part. It would be great to see families and work colleagues all joining forces to

raise money for such worthwhile causes. Sheffield is going to be an exciting hub of activity this year thanks to the Olympic Games, so this event is the perfect opportunity for everyone to take part in sporting activities.” Olympic gold medallist and Swimathon president Duncan Goodhew and Jodie Kidd are this year’s Swimathon Weekend ambassadors. Duncan said: “We all know that 2012 will

be a very special year for sport in Britain. In our 25th anniversary year we’d love to add to the half a million people who have taken part in the event over the years to dive into pools up and down the country. Teaming up with the Big Splash is not only a great way to help make this happen, but should also boost the total funds raised for two important charities.” The first 10,000 people who sign up for a Swimathon Weekend

session before the end of January will receive half price entry. Participants can enter until 25 April 2012. For more information about how to take part in the Swimathon Weekend, session times, training tips or to sponsor a swimmer visit www. swimathon.org. To improve your swimming you can also take part in lessons at SIV run venues. Visit www. siv.com.

Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS

Do Americanisms lose something and sound less cool when you use them in England? Well, that’s the £652,848 question. On her deathbed my wife asked if I would light a candle on the day of her death to remember her. To be honest it’s more of a firework display. The prison doctor said “I’ve got your test results. Do you want the good news or the bad news?” “Give me the good news” I said. “Your life sentence is nearly over.” I went to see a medium yesterday regarding my late wife as I had something important to ask her. After a couple of minutes of silence, the medium finally managed to make contact, but told me to ask only one question as time was short.I took a deep breath and then finally managed to speak. “Susan...If you’re there.....where did you last put my golf shoes?” My neighbour’s in the Guisness Book of Records after having 43 concusions, we’re very close.. Just a stones throw away. Me and my wife haven’t been getting along for years, so one day I thought, ‘I’ll buy my wife a cemetery plot for her birthday.’ Well, you can imagine her disappointment. The next year, her birthday comes around again and this time I didn’t get her anything. She said, “Why didn’t you get me a birthday present this year!?” ‘’Well,’’ I replied “You didn’t use what I got you last year did you!” There’s a new seatbelt design that wraps around the mouth of the person in the passenger seat. My wife hates it, but at least we have less accidents.

Did you know the voting system on shows like Dancing on Ice and X Factor isn’t fair? Shock! The public vote overrides the judges’ vote, so when people go “how was he in the bottom two… he was the judges’ favourite?”, just remember that the contestant with the fewest public votes always goes out in a tie (so if the judges scored someone 10 and the public 1, they’d still be up for the skate off). It’s a stupid and unfair system which gives no weight to the judges’ vote – the judges might as well not be there (I wish Louis Spence wasn’t). I could explain the whole system more clearly but I’ve only got a few words left and I’ve still got Jedward to slag off. On that note, Jedward have released their new video in which they feature naked. Jesus Christ. I want to see less of these feckless twins – not more! I do not want to see those two tiny penises on TV ever (and I’m not talking about their genitals)! That said, Channel 5 got a shocker last week when an episode of Celebrity Big Brother featuring Jedward turned out to be the lowest rated of the series (meaning the last two viewers switched off – I’m joking!). Perhaps this is the news we’ve been waiting for – that no one actually likes the boys with one brain cell and that they will forever vanish from the face of television. I can only pray for such a day. Jedward will do anything for a bit of fame. Can’t we send them off to North Korea to interview Kim Jong Un? They’re bound to get into trouble - they can’t communicate in English let alone another language. Our cultures are very different, though; they euthanize the freaks of society over there – in the UK we put them on television! How the brainless excuse for talent become so popular is baffling to me. Do people find Jedward genuinely entertaining or are we so obsessed with people with no redeeming qualities that we can’t see them for what they actually are (useless)? Actually, that would explain why Ant ‘n’ Dec are so popular - I’ve been more entertained by corpses – and had better conversations (but that’s another story entirely)… Thirteen Dates Quick review: I wanted to talk about a new e-book that’s out on Kindle. It’s called Thirteen Dates, and it’s a very funny look at online dating through the eyes of a hopeless and disaster-prone romantic guy who just can’t get it right. It’s hysterical in places, and sentimental and tragic, too (it even caused my ice-covered heart to miss a beat at one point – almost). If you’re after a most unusual read (it’s not for everyone, it’s very naughty), check out Thirteen Dates by I M Stuttz on Amazon.co.uk.

KELL BROOK STARS IN ʻWAR OF THE ROSESʼ

In a press conference held earlier this week at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield it was announced that Kell Brook and Matthew Hatton will meet in the “War of the Roses” at the venue Saturday March 17th – live on Sky Sports. Tickets priced £30 (tiered), £40 (tiered), £60 (tiered/floor) and £100 (ringside) are on sale now The top two ranked Welterweights in Britain will clash in a classic Yorkshire versus Lancashire derby to lay to rest any debate on who is the best Welterweight in the land. The bigger picture for the fight though is the chance to fight for a World title later in 2012, and Brook, who is ranked in the top ten of all the governing bodies, is delighted to be facing Hatton in this hometown blockbuster. “This is a fight I’ve wanted for a long time and to get it at the Sheffield Arena means the world to me,” said Brook, 25. “When I first sat down with Eddie, he told me that his vision was a sell-out night at Sheffield Arena and now we’re here. It is a competitive division and we’re both trying to achieve the same goal, so I know that by putting him out of the equation, it gives me a clearer run at the title. I want people to stand up and take notice of me and these are the kind of nights that makes that happen. “We’ve been looking at fights here and in the US but this is the one that gives me the buzz. I know I’m comfortably the best Welterweight in Britain and I’m going to put in a devastating performance on March 17 to show the World just that.” The fight represents an impressive landmark for Hatton, who will fight for the 50th time as a pro when he faces Brook. The Manchester man has held the European and Commonwealth Welterweight titles and put in a brave performance against Saul Alvarez in Anaheim last March when they tussled for the vacant WBC Light Middleweight title. The 30 year-old returned to Welterweight action in August, winning the vacant IBF International title in Blackpool against Andrei Abramenka and with almost twice the number of fights under his belt, Hatton believes his experience of big fight nights will give him the edge in Sheffield. “This is a massive night and a massive fight but it’s nothing new to me,” said Hatton. “It’s my 50th contest and I’m very proud of that, so I want it to be a landmark and Kell is in the way of that, I don’t want my 50th fight to be a loss. I’ve boxed class opposition in big arenas all over the world so experience will play a part in this fight. Fighting Kell in Sheffield isn’t something that’s going to keep me awake and it’s only an hour down the road so I’ll have good support there on the night. “It has irritated me a little bit that people regard Kell as the number one in Britain – I’ve been European champion and was undefeated at that level, it’s like being told you are not even the best at School even though you are the best in Europe! “So finally one of us is going to be able to say that they are number one – people tell me that he is number one and I’m sure he gets people telling him that I am number one, so on March 17 we’ll find out for sure.” Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn added: “This fight has taken it’s time to arrive but I couldn’t be happier that we have finally got it on. I’ve wanted this fight since we signed Kell, and I remember Ray Hatton telling me early last year to let this fight grow and he was right. It’s perfect timing for both fighters and a massive night for British boxing. I want to bring the glory days back to British boxing and you need fights and events that will capture the public’s imagination – this is just the start of what we want to do in 2012 and we’re going to get Sheffield jumping on March 17.” Hearn also revealed that British Middleweight star Darren Barker is likely to make his first appearance since fighting Sergio Martinez in October as the chief support on the night, and that Lee Purdy will face Adnan Amar for the English Welterweight title. Other names for the show will be confirmed in the next week. Tickets for Kell Brook vs. Matthew Hatton plus full championship undercard, priced £30 (tiered), £40 (tiered), £60 (tiered/floor) and £100 (ringside) are on sale now, available in person from the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarenasheffield. co.uk

NEWS & INFORMATION

RESIDENTS REMINDED TO KEEP ʻSAFE AND WARMʼ http://www.syfire.gov.uk/1780.asp

Colder weather this January could result an increased risk of fires in the home, South Yorkshire firefighters say. The fire service is asking people to heat their homes with care and look out for older people this winter as part of their ‘Safe and Warm’ drive to cut house fires. Close to 200 house fires started accidentally in each of the last two winters, around a 20% hike compared to the warmer summer months. With energy price rises squeezing many residents’ postChristmas pockets, some may be also be driven to heat their homes less safely. The advice offered by South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue (SYFR) includes: Heaters- keep heaters away from curtains and furniture and never use them to dry clothes Open fires- use a fire guard to protect against flying sparks and make sure embers are properly extinguished before going to bed Electric blankets- never use hot water bottles in the same bed as an electric blanket, even if it is switched off Candles- never leave naked flames unattended and only put them on heat resistant surfaces Diane Malpass, Station Manager in Community Safety, said: “The number of house fires we attend continues to fall steadily every year. But as winter really starts to bite, we do see a seasonal increase in certain types of incident, such as accidental blazes started by heaters or unsafe electrical appliances. “Just asking yourself a few simple questions about the safety of the equipment before switching it on, might be enough to protect you and your family from a serious fire. And where electrical items are concerned, remembering to switch them off after use and before you go to bed is one of the surest ways of ensuring they don’t become a fire risk.” Older people are one of the groups believed to be most at risk of a fire in the home, so experts are also calling on the public to lend a hand to needy neighbours or relatives, particularly those living alone “Spending just a few minutes with an older person who lives alone, maybe once a day or a couple of times a week, checking the safety of their heaters and electrics and testing their smoke alarm could make a massive difference to that person’s safety this winter.” For more information on staying safe in the home this winter, visit www.syfire. gov.uk or follow the #safeandwarm advice on Twitter @syfr

MOVE OF SOME HAVE YOUR SAY ON SITES ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY FOR NEW HOMES TO THE HALLAMSHIRE Sheffield City Council is consulting on COULD REDUCE CANCELLED an Additional Site Allocation Options document until 27 February 2012. OPERATIONS AND HELP This is necessary because there is a WITH WINTER PRESSURES shortage of housing and the Government Moving some elective orthopaedic surgery to the Hallamshire Hospital could dramatically reduce cancelled operations and help with winter pressures. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals are hoping to cut the number of non urgent operations which have to be cancelled during the busy winter period by carrying out some operations at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital instead of the Northern General Hospital. More than 140,000 operations and surgical procedures were carried out last year at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals but approx 800 operations regrettably had to be cancelled at short notice predominantly either because the patient was either not fit to undergo surgery or an emergency patient took priority in terms of needing theatre time, a bed or particular staff expertise. In order to reduce the number of cancelled operations, plans have now been approved to carry out some elective orthopaedic surgery (arthroplasty – planned knee and hip replacements) at the Royal Hallamshire rather than the Northern General Hospital from this month. Thanks to the support of medical, theatres, critical care, therapy and ward staff, it is hoped that by moving some elective arthroplasty surgery to the Hallamshire they will be much less affected by the pressures of winter and rising emergency admissions and cancellations will therefore be substantially reduced. The proposal would also allow an additional 40 beds to be freed up at the Northern General Hospital which can be used to help accommodate the rise in demand over Winter. Paul Sutton, Clinical Director for Orthopaedics explains: “We want to offer the best possible care to all our patients and the last thing we ever want to do is to cancel anyone’s operation as we know who stressful this is for the patient and their families. However particularly in the Winter period we face a constant struggle because the increasing and unpredictable rise in emergency patients means we regrettably sometimes have to cancel planned operations which are non urgent. “We have created some dedicated wards at the Hallamshire Hospital because it is much less affected by emergency admissions than the Northern General Hospital where A&E and the majority of the Emergency Assessment Units are located. This means the availability of beds, theatre time and staffing will be much more guaranteed and hopefully lead to less cancellations for non clinical reasons. The proposed move of some operations to the Royal Hallamshire will also free up an additional beds at the Northern General Hospital to accommodate the rising number of emergency patients who need to be admitted.” Sessions are as follows: Fulwood Mon 23 Jan at 6pm in Nether Green Infant School, Stumperlow Park Road, S10 3QP Crookes Tues 24 Jan at 6pm in Westways Primary School, Mona Avenue, S10 1NE Dore and Totley (inc Bradway) Thurs 26 Jan at 6pm in Totley Library, 205 Baslow Road, S17 4DT Ecclesall Tues 31 Jan at 6pm in Ecclesall Junior

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques

This week we pay our respects to an honorary member of Radio Nightingale who passed away recently – Mary Gregory. Mary was an active member with Radio Nightingale from 1983 until 1998. During this time, Mary held a number of key posts within the organisation including Station Manager, Chairman of the Executive Committee, Secretary and Treasurer. Mary also presented a weekly 90-minute programme, ‘Classical Choice’, on a Wednesday evening throughout her time at the station. Mary made a significant contribution to the development of the station including during difficult financial times in the mid 80’s making a generous contribution from her own personal finances in order to save the station. Later in the 80’s, Mary was instrumental in raising the money required for the inductive loop broadcasting system which remains in place today. Mary saw active service in the Second World War where she was a wireless mechanic with the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF). Originally from London, Mary moved north with her work as a librarian, working in the central library in Sheffield for many years. Additional to her work at Radio Nightingale, Mary was an active member of her local community in Todwick, serving on the Parish Council and Parochial Church Council – more information about her input to the community can be found at www. todwick.org.uk Mary retired from Radio Nightingale in 1998, at the age of 78 the advances in technology at the station were becoming too rapid for her to master. Only a handful of remaining members will remember Mary directly but everyone at the station and everyone who listens to the station owe her a debt of gratitude for the time and effort she devoted in her 15 years involvement. Contact us on 01709 304244 for more information on volunteering.

THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

We’d like to start your new year with a state of the art brand new digital radio. The Pure One Classic Series II model will allow you to Pause, Rewind and even Listen again, just as you can with digital TV. Retailing in the shops for over £60 each, we’re giving them away free for the rest of this week. Simply tune in to my Breakfast Show and make a note of the first song you hear after the news at 8am. When you hear it again later in the day, ring 0845 113 22 22 and tell us the title and if you’re a lucky caller it’s yours to enjoy Magic in crystal clear stereo quality. Also this week we’re giving you a chance to win a free night out. ‘Save the last dance for me’ is the latest musical from Bill Kenwright following on from the successes of Dreamboats and Petticoats about life in the magical rock n roll era. Alongside the hits of the 60s, the story follows two young girls as they venture out on their first holiday away from their parents. It takes in their adventures and their own experiences of first love. You can catch it nightly at Sheffield Lyceum for the whole week from next Monday, and to win tickets all you have to do is to complete my song each day as we play, “Save the last line for me”. Tune up your vocal chords and you could be off to see one of the latest big stage sensations courtesy of Magic. See you in the morning.

FLAT CAPS, FERRETS BUT NO FEMALES CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

Last Wednesday evening, BBC4 treated us to some wonderful archive footage of clubs, and pubs, from decades ago. If you didn’t manage to see it, the Timeshift documentary on The Rules of Drinking is still available on the BBC iPlayer. The archive footage tells us part of the story, in a lovely visual way. It’s a treat to see those old black and white images of packed clubs with the beer flowing like there is no tomorrow, and also to hear the voices of some of the members on screen. One man described the harsh conditions of working down the pit and how a thirst for beer was only natural after a hard day at the coal face. Few could argue with that- beer washed away the dust and dirt of the working day and the company to be found in a club would help to restore a sense of humanity. Programmes like this documentary bring up these issues but they also reproduce many of the stereotypes about what clubs were and are like, even if that is not the aim of the producers. We do see lots of flat caps on the drinking men! But that is what most working men wore- my own father did for much of his life but we didn’t live ‘up north’. There were no ferrets to be seen in the programme (perhaps they were hidden down someone’s trousers!) but they always seem to be brought into the equation along with a far more serious aspect of clubs in the past- their extreme ‘maleness.’ Much of the footage shows rooms full of men though women do make an appearance, perhaps as in this documentary, with babes on knees being given a drop of stout. Stereotypes have some foundation in reality and many clubs did not allow women or if they did, only into certain rooms and not at the bar. But reality is always a lot more complicated than the black and white images that we see. It was simply a case of where you were in the country and what the majority of a club’s membership wanted. The situation for women varied from place to place and over time was subject to negotiation and change. Some men wanted their wives, sisters and mothers to be able to use the clubs on an equal basis to men, and argued the case. Others didn’t, preferring to keep their male-only place of leisure. There were trends and similarities across clubs- hence the stereotypes- but there were many differences which is why we have to treat stereotypes carefully not only when looking back to the past but considering the present.

A;BUM REVIEW: JuiceheaD by KT Evans

INTERVIEW: Young Guns by KT Evans

Hell, you can’t reinvent the wheel...but you can get pretty damn close. JuiceheaD for example seem to be the perfect case study. Brutal punk rock trio stemming from across the pond, JuiceheaD’s debut album ‘How To Sail A Sinking Ship,’ is a modern take on the age-old Punk genre, shining their own personal light onto a style of music that has pretty much been dogged to death. In full captivation of true authentic punk (obligatory maledictions, fierce hooks and relentless energy really do come as standard for the group) JuiceheaD however seem to be handling punk rock in their own mature, up-to-date way, with nods towards melodic goth and 21st century progressive rock littered throughout the twenty track LP. Contradicting the traditional ‘rush rush’ mentality of old school punk albums, ‘How To Sail A Sinking Ship’ seems not to be short lived or hurried along; instead the album appears to harbour versatility throughout with ‘Black Roses’ standing out as a particularly tender track. Combine this with a face melter of a guitar solo part way through ‘When I Fall From Grace’ and its evident this album plays witness to a tapestry of first rate melodies, lyrical humour and fine instrumental knowledge. With an expectation of nothing less from a band who has worked with some of music’s finest musicians and producers, JuiceheaD conscripted the hand of John Cafiero within production of the album, long time Ramones collaborator and all round music royalty. Allowing the album to blossom in its modern versatility, the trio also got to jam with Nirvana great Melora Creager in tune ‘Black Roses’ which witnesses Creager adopt the cello to produce an album of so much depth than any regular punk release. Alongside individual experience of each of the band members, all of whom have been actively involved in the Chicago underground music scene since 2000, ‘How to Sail A Sinking Ship’ was established through a rich background of musical understanding. With a release date of 13th February on Misfits Records, JuiceheaD will be touring the UK throughout February with no doubt a set consisting of brand new album tracks. Check out the bands official website (juiceheadmusic.com) for more info on the tour or misfitsrecords.com for album release info.

Young Guns rock…it’s true and if you dispute this statement then you may as well stop reading right about now. Congratulations if you are sticking here with us… hell you’ve got a kick ass music taste! Seen as you must be so uber trendy and know all about what’s hot, it would be unquestionable to think that you’re not aware of the Young Guns show with support from Polar at Sheffield’s Corporation on 7th February then right? Thought so. It’s pretty hard to open up a music magazine these days and not see either a double page spread or main news feature on Buckinghamshire’s five piece Young Guns. It seems 2011 really was the year for the rockers, who, forming in 2003, have ejected themselves into commercial success after the release of their debut album ‘All Our Kings Are Dead’ back in July 2010. ‘With the first album, we were still finding our sound and were not completely there in terms of style…’ explains Young Gun’s drummer Ben Jolliffe. ‘The main difference with the second album is the sound…we’re all much better song writers now.’ So it seems that’s we’ve all got pretty damn lucky… not only have Young Guns stamped their unique mark on the UK rock scene, but are also set to release their second studio album, ‘Bones’ on 6th February, a day before their show at Sheffield’s Corporation. ‘This is a much better album,’ reveals Ben who, joining the band in 2007 has lived through Young Guns rise into national success…hey its not every day you get to open up the main stage at Reading Festival 2011. ‘Our expectation is for the big festivals and a hope for a stateside and Japan tour. It’s always been one of our goals to play in the USA, it would be amazing.’ We’ve all heard of the curse of the second album right? Similar to a runner hitting the wall, writers loosing their creative flare, yeah you get the picture. And with such a strong first album for Young Guns, it’s easy to understand how tricky it must have been to compete with the popularity of ‘All Our Kings Are Dead.’ ‘We felt the pressure to start with, for the first six or seven weeks. In the first month, we pretty much did nothing and were all thinking how hard this second albums going to be. Then out of nowhere we had a great day and things from then on felt a lot easier…we don’t settle for ok.’ With support from alternative rock band Polar, Young Guns will be bringing their explosive live set to Sheffield on 7th February, a date music lovers have no doubt had penned in their diaries for quite some time. ‘We’ve always said about Sheffield how much we wanted to play there…it’s a great city, some great bands and its one we’re really looking forward to playing.’ Young Guns will be performing at Sheffield’s Corporation on 7th February. For more info, check out the bands myspace (myspace.com/youngguns) or Corp’s official website (corporation.org.uk) for tickets, bookings and pics.

MACCABEES MARCH INTO THE LEADMILL

The Maccabees third album ‘Given To The Wild’ is the culmination of two years of writing and recording. Having followed ‘Wall of Arms’ – 2009’s critically-lauded second release – with main stage slots at Reading and Leeds Festivals, and two sell-out shows at Brixton Academy, the London five piece (singer Orlando Weeks, bassist Rupert Jarvis, guitarists Felix and Hugo White and drummer Sam Doyle) began work on its follow-up by dismantling their most creative of songwriting units. For several months The Maccabees went their separate ways, individually sketching out the tracks

Sheffield’s

that would make up their latest studio album.“We wanted everyone in the band to feel freedom while making this record,” says Felix White. “So individually we would work on ideas and bring them to the rest of the band.” The fruits of this labour became the epic and beguiling ‘Given To The Wild’, a sprawling masterpiece of distorted pop, psychedelia and soulful guitar wig outs. It is the band’s most adventurous work to date. Following main stage slots at Reading and Leeds Festivals, and two sell-out shows at Brixton Academy in 2009 the band returned last October with an intimate run of shows to showcase their new material. They embark on a larger tour though this month calling in at The Leadmill on Saturday 21st Jan. The Maccabees The Leadmill - Saturday 21st October Tickets:£15.00 www.theleadmill.co.uk

Brax announces that he is going to join Charlie and Ruby in their move to the city, and that he is breaking his links with the River Boys. Neighbours

Mon: Paul gets a case together to try to save Kateʼs career, but Priya stands firm. Karl is given hope of a reconciliation with Susan when Malcolm opens her eyes to how she misjudged him. Tues: Paul tells Priya how Brennanʼs death affected Kate, but Priya is not swayed, until Noah appeals. When Sophie learns the whole truth, the rift between her and her sister grows, prompting Kate to change her life and career. Wed: Toadie tries to get Emilia to influence Lucas about his decision not to sell the garage. Then a visit from health and safety officials, and a subsequent break-in, makes Lucas suspect foul play. Thurs: Lucas sticks up for Chris when Warren, a homophobic customer, picks up his car. Summer cannot help but find it funny when she finds out about Andrewʼs bizarre tattoo. Toadie is offered a permanent contract from Peter after informing him that the developers are not to be trusted. Fri: Just as Jadeʼs feelings for Kyle are reignited, he finds out about her affair with Malcolm. Chris is approached by Warrenʼs son Blake, who says sorry for his dadʼs behaviour. Warren is unhappy when he catches them together.

Angler’s Corner Racing Form by Clint Walker

Wow, what a week I’ve had and I’ve not been on the bank for more than hour! Another disaster last Monday in what would have been my second attempt to get some bank time in; I’d just had my first cast on a new water twenty miles from home when I got the phone call to say one of the kids was bad and needed me to return to the humble abode. Although not particular happy about it, at least I didn’t get a puncture or have a minor bump like the previous week, and, as the wife tells me, some things are more important than fishing...... Having said that, the contributions that I make to Tackle & Gun magazine sometimes see me visit places I wouldn’t normally get the opportunity to, and this week I was lucky enough to visit the Dinsmores factory in Aldridge, West Midlands. If you haven’t heard of Dinsmores (where have you been??!!) then a little background information; Dinsmores have been producing quality fishing weights and other essential tackle items for over 40 years and was originally founded by engineer and passionate angler George May to satisfy his own angling requirements, the company now has George’s sons Ian and Nigel at the helm to carry on the family tradition of producing quality products; employing 20 staff, the company use a full range of engineering processes to manufacture mainstay items used by anglers throughout the world. Dinsmore are probably most recognised for their nontoxic shot, but how is it made? I had no idea, so a tour around the factory with owner Nigel May revealed some intriguing information. Split shot is made from wire in a variety of thicknesses to give the required weight of shot, and Dinsmores do everything on site, from manufacturing their own tooling for the various processes to designed packaging and developing new products. The wires are fed into machinery which reciprocates up to 800 times a minute to ‘ball’ the shot and split it before depositing it into the required bins for the next stages. In its cut state, the brightly shiny shot then goes through other procedures to coat it in non-reflective or camouflage coverings to render it unobtrusive when in use. Dinsmores don’t just do shot though, there is a huge amount of products within the catalogue, and it was just as interesting to see how simple things such as banksticks are made; die cast fittings are added to metal stems; sounds simple, and it probably is in terms of complex engineering, but still good to find out exactly what goes on to produce the items that we all find essential to our angling. Nets, rod pods, rod rests, sinkers, feeders, floats, ready rigs, umbrellas and even monofilament line; all produced in the UK by a firm we have much to be thankful for! It really is fascinating if you are interested in product development or engineering and I’m extremely grateful to Nigel and his staff for allowing me the chance to get behind the scenes and have a look at what goes on. Find out more at www.dinsmores. co.uk, you may be surprised just how much Dinsmores tackle is in your bag!

Saturday’s Channel 4 racing comprises 5 Grade 2 contests, a class2 handicap chase and the Grade 1 Victor Chandler Chase which is the undoubted highlight of the day. Ascot: 2.05 1942 was a Vintage Year Mares’ Hurdle, Grade 2, 3m: This looks to be a fiercely competitive event where at least half a dozen can be given seriously good chances. On balance I reckon that Kentford Grey Lady can come out on top based on what she achieved last time out where she confirmed herself to be a progressive mare by outpointing a quite decent field by upwards of 6 lengths. That day she beat Violin Davis and Cloudy Spirit who take her on again here but look up against it on that form. Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Tara Rose may be the one that gives the selection most to do with Molly Round and Love of Tara also capable of giving a bold showing. 2.35 Bet Mobile at BetVictor.com Holloway’s Hurdle, Limited Handicap, Grade 2, 2m. 3 ½f: If Menorah was in this field he would no doubt be offered at pretty short odds to win. Well just to whet your appetite have a look at the form that is presented by Bobby Ewing. This one has been off the track for over two years but when last seen trounced Menorah by ten lengths at level weights in a Novice Hurdle at Doncaster. He has since moved from Nigel Twiston-Davies to David Pipe last October but if he retains the ability shown when last seen and if that race can be taken at face value

3.45 BetVictor.com Handicap Chase, Class 2, 2m 5 1/2f: The selection here is Richard Rowe’s Tatenen who I think is still unexposed and should get in with a good racing weight here. The principal dangers seem to belong to David Pipe who has Swing Bill, Tamarinbleu, Matuhi and Consigliere who all have reasonable chances. Others in the reckoning are Rougham, Mad Max, Zaynar and Passato. Haydock: 2.20 StanJames.com Champion Hurdle Trial, Grade 2, 2 m: Celestial Halo is something of an obvious choice in a race that has only a handful of entries. Desert Cry looks to be the main danger although Smad Place and Torphichen have an unexposed look about them over hurdles. 3.30 Peter Marsh Chase, (Limited Handicap), Grade 2, 3m: Mon Mome put in a good effort last time and with his stable going great guns at present merits the vote in this one. He has strong past form over this course and distance and although now a 12 year old if he is in the same mood as when last seen at Cheltenham he can land the spoils. The dangers that could become party-poopers are The Sawyer, Consigliere, Mount Oscar and Tamarinbleu. 4.05 Betfair. Don’t settle for less Novices’ Chase, Grade 2, 2m 4f: A confident vote goes to the hat-trick seeking Our Mick who won well last time and did so in a fast time for the conditions. He would seem to have everything going for him here and can prevail over the Nicky Henderson inmate State Benefit who also won last time. Others with some sort of chance if the selection fails to fire are Milo Milan, Stopped Out and Bunclody.

3.10 25th Anniversary of the Victor Chandler Chase, Grade 1, 2m 1f: Finian’s Rainbow is the forecast favourite but in my book faces a pretty stiff task here against some seasoned and battle-hardened campaigners and a very exciting Novice prospect in Al Ferof - who could literally be anything over fences and has to be a serious danger to the favourite. Wishfull Thinking and Oiseau de Nuit were not too far behind Finian’s Rainbow in the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton last time to rule out a turnaround in the form, particularly when the mistake at the last by the latter is taken into account. Also in the reckoning is Somersby who acquitted himself quite well in the King George over a distance that was probably too far on reflection. The drop back to two miles is in his favour and he also has a good chance. Gauvain is another class animal that won last time out and cannot be discounted. All in all the 7/4 on offer about the favourite looks too short and I am therefore siding with the up-and-coming Al Ferof to take his measure here.

Selection summary: Ascot: 2.05 Kentford Grey Lady 2.35 Bobby Ewing 3.10 Al Ferof 3.45 Tatenen

he must have a pretty good chance here. This will be no cakewalk however with the field containing the likes of: Third Intention who has good form behind Brampour; the hat-trick seeking Bally Legend; and five other last time out winners: Ciceron; Joseph Lister; Knight Pass; Consigliere; and Dooney Rock. Another with a live but outside chance is Pateese who needs to recapture some form to figure.

Local Football by Michael Clarke County Senior League The recent spell of bad weather took its toll on Saturday’s fixture list with numerous postponements due to frozen pitches region-wide. However, eight games did take place. Premier Division A Gavin Allott penalty and a Martin Jones strike gave Millmoor Juniors a 2-0 win over Ecclesfield Red Rose at Grange Park. Millmoor have now won their last four league games. There was only one other game in the Premier League. This came at the Transport Ground where Sheffield Reserves were defeated 2-1 by South Kirkby Colliery. South Kirkby move onto 21 points and into a comfortable mid-table position. Sheffield, however, stay off the foot of the table on goal difference. Division One The standout result of the weekend came at the Frecheville Sports Ground, where Frecheville were beaten comfortably 3-0 by Swinton Station Athletic. Frecheville remain second but are now four points behind Houghton Main, and have lost two of their last three home games. Swinton are now only five points back from Frecheville in fourth. Thorpe Hesley consolidated their fifth place position, with a 2-0 win over Wickersley at the Civil Service Ground. The vital goals came from Chris Walker and Joe Hall. Two goals from Danny Duffy inspired Silkstone United to a 4-2 win over Bramley Sunnyside Juniors at Flash Lane. James Dickson and Sam French were also on target for Silkstone. Division Two Third placed Thorncliffe brushed aside Sheffield Lane Top, with a whopping 7-1 away win. The win takes Thorncliffe within two points of second placed Gleadless. Sheffield Bankers were also big winners. They beat Frecheville Reserves 6-1 at Davy Sports Club. Mike Russell starred for the Bankers, scoring twice. His goals were complimented by strikes from Les Balmer, Scott Dinnigan, Sam Dean and Rob Jerrison. Clowne Villa extended their unbeaten run to three games, with a 2-1 win over Millmoor Juniors Reserves. Clowne’s goals came from Dave Dexter and Kirk Bradshaw. Josh Hemmingway was on target for Millmoor. Meadowhall League Technology saved the day in the Meadowhall League on Sunday, after the bad weather in the South Yorkshire region brought numerous pitches to the fore. Two games did take place, but only thanks to 3G pitches. Carlton Social beat Mosborough U21’s 3-1 at Springs Academy in the U21 Cup. The first half was goalless, but a volley of action finished with Carlton 3-1 winners. Boyle, Swift and Hewitt grabbed the goals for Carlton to take them into Second Round of the competition. The other game took place at Gosforth Fields, where Dronfield Town U21’s beat Throstles U21’s 5-0 in the U21 Division. There were five different goalscorers for Dronfield, these being Richard Hirst, Michael Shaw, Callum Mawbuy, Tom Collier and Liam Hogg.

ROBINS ROB POINTS FROM MILLERS MILLERS NEWS www.themillers.co.uk

The Millers suffered their first defeat of 2012 as they narrowly lost out 2-1 to Swindon Town at Don Valley. Matt Ritchie’s first-half quickfire double sealed the three points for the visitors despite a spirited Millers performance. Jason Taylor found himself with the first chance of the half after 10 minutes when he picked up the ball on the edge of the area, before firing his shot into sea of Swindon players, only to blaze the ball over as he picked up the rebound. Swindon full debutant Paul Benson could’ve put the visitors ahead when Ritchie’s inch perfect cross found him unmarked at the back post, but Rhys Taylor acrobatically turned his header around the post. Paulo Di Canio’s side did open the scoring just minutes later when Ritchie took advantage of a bobbling Millers clearance on the edge of the area before rifling his half volley low into Taylor’s goal. Swindon were clearly spurred on by the goal and used their momentum to add a second just 60 seconds later. Ritchie again picked up on a Millers defensive header before thundering his shot into the top corner doubling the visitor’s advantage. Sam Wood almost gifted Swindon a third when his short back pass was latched onto to by Benson who couldn’t quite squeeze the ball past the onrushing Taylor as he turned the ball behind for a corner. Andy Scott’s half-time team talk saw the Millers

Winter has arrived ! A heavy overnight frost had not affected the pitch too much, having been covered overnight, but whilst the sun was out it was freezing cold. For the Rovers Tommy Spurr made a welcome return after injury, Simon Gillett also came in after being on the bench for the F.A, Cup match last week and, despite all the transfer talk, Billy Sharp took the field. The Rovers defended the South Stand end in the first half. The visitors got the game underway but the early minutes were spent in each side feeling each other out. In the 8th minute, a long throw from Spurr into the Cardiff six yard box was allowed to bounce before Hayter, at the far post, headed wide. Minutes later, Coppinger had a left foot shot from 30yards on the right go wide of the near post. In the 16th minute the Rovers, after a good build-up, won a corner. This came out of the Cardiff defence to Gillett twentyfive yards out. A terrific strike was going goalwards before taking a deflection for a corner. The visitors were having their fair share of the midfield play but not getting a sight of goal. However, in the 21st minute, a loose pass by Stock went straight to Miller, who set off for goal but a fine tackle by Hird in the penalty area as Miller prepared to shoot snuffed out the danger. Three minutes later Hayter headed over from a cross by O’Connor from the Rovers right. On the half hour, Hayter was only just wide of the near post from 15yards on the Rovers left. Midfield play proliferated before Whittingham gave Miller a shooting chance from 25yards but he put over the bar after 37 minutes. Then, following good play on the Rovers right they won a corner but this came to nothing. Hird was then cautioned for a foul on Mason who threatened to get away on the Cardiff left. The free kick into the Rovers six yard box was punched away by Button but the visitors came again to win a corner which was again punched away by Button, with the ball being returned and put past a post. The Rovers set the second half in motion and went on to the attack straight away. In the second minute they went down their left, Diouf cut into the middle

This was cleared and Cardiff went to the other end where Gunnarsson’s effort from 25yards was comfortably saved by Button. In the 50th minute, Stock fed Sharp in the area where he controlled and turned with the ball but his left foot effort was sliced wide. Two minutes later and a good effort from 25yards by Hayter had Marshall sprawling to his left to save. Minutes later a free kick on the Rovers right touchline caused a general melee in the Cardiff six yard area before O’Connor headed over. In the 65th minute Mason, for Cardiff, got to the left byline but his low cross was cut out by Button. At the other end Beye followed up a Rovers attack but fired over from distance. Then, in the 70th minute, Sharp was played in on goal but took one touch too many giving Marshall the chance to get in a tackle and win the ball. Gillett then had a goalbound shot deflected for a corner. Then Mason, on the Cardiff left, passed inside to Whittingham but Button saved his shot. Play had become end-to-end, with Cardiff winning a corner being their best effort up front. In the 86th minute Hird had a go from 30yards but it was delected for a corner, which was headed over at the far post by Sharp. Into added time and a corner to the visitors was punched away by Button. The Rovers went for broke as the final minutes ticked away but the match ended as it had began, goalless. The Rovers played exceptionally well against a team from the top echelon of the table and as well as Cardiff played their efforts at goal were neutralised by a good defensive display by the Rovers, who more than matched their opponents in every respect. come out a different side and it took just eight minutes before his side had halved the deficit. Chris Holroyd’s hanging cross was met by the head of Alex Revell, who directed his effort expertly back across the face of goal and past the stranded Wesley Foderingham. Despite the goal the visitors continued to press, Paul Caddis’ jinking run gave him space for a shot on the edge of the area but Taylor was equal to it and tipped the ball over for a corner. Swindon again came close when Ritchie squared the ball to Benson on the edge of the six yard area, but a last ditch block from Johnny Mullins denied him his first goal for the club. The Millers almost got the equaliser when Grabban rattled the Swindon post with his half volley from 20 yards out, but the rebound bounced away from danger and It wasn’t long before Scott’s side threatened again, Dale Tonge’s low cross was cleverly dummied by Brett Williams but Revell was unable to direct his shot goalwards, firing the ball well over the crossbar. The visitors could’ve put the game to bed when a hanging Ritchie cross evaded everyone including Benson who just couldn’t make contact at the far post.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2011/12 OWLS EDGED OUT BY ADDICKS MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk

Sheffield Wednesday suffered their first home defeat of the season as League 1 leaders Charlton strengthened their grip at the summit with a 1-0 win. Johnnie Jackson’s first half goal proved the difference and although the Owls had a goal disallowed and numerous half chances, it was not their day and the Addicks emerged triumphant. Gary Madine was thrust straight back into action for Wednesday following a twomonth injury lay-off. Madine, sidelined since mid-November with a broken toe, was central to the Owls’ early-season ascent up the division as the hitman averaged almost a goal a game. And his input might have had a crucial impact on proceedings, right on the half time whistle with Wednesday trailing Jackson’s opener. Swivelling to convert Reda Johnson’s flicked header from a Ben Marsall throw-in, the big striker wheeled away to celebrate only to see the goal ruled out for offside. Had Wednesday drawn level at that key stage, the outcome may have been different but it was not to be on a frustrating afternoon for the home side. Gary Megson handed an immediate debut to new recruit Mike Jones, who with Marshall formed a two-pronged attack down the channels in this the final game of the latter’s loan stint at Hillsborough. Both widemen enjoyed good early touches but the first shot of the contest came at the other end when Bradley Wright-Phillips brought a comfortable near-post save from ex-Charlton keeper Nicky Weaver. The majority of the offensive play

thereafter was Wednesday’s and they came close just past the 15-minute mark when Chris O’Grady slipped his marker down the left and played a cross ball into Chris Lines, whose shot was deflected to safety. But Charlton arrived in S6 boasting the best away record in the country and despite the Owls’ earlier promise, showed exactly why on 28 minutes with the decisive goal. The Londoners won a free kick 20 yards out and up stepped skipper Jackson to curl a wonderful angled drive beyond the reach of Weaver and into the top corner. Wednesday responded with Lines warming the gloves of Ben Hamer from distance before Johnson headed on target without testing the Addicks’ custodian. Madine did manage to beat Hamer in first half stoppage time but not the linesman’s flag and the visitors headed down the tunnel a goal to the good. That lead could have doubled just four minutes into the second half as WrightPhillips burst through on goal but Weaver came to the rescue with a fine save after advancing swiftly from his line. Wednesday responded with Rob Jones twice going close from Marshall corners and O’Grady thumped a long-ranger over the crossbar. Indeed, on numerous occasions the Owls advanced dangerously in the final third but the Charlton defence held strong without looking under any real threat. Ryan Lowe and Clinton Morrison came on for Wednesday but the ball just would not drop - Morrison had a header cleared off the line at the death - and the Addicks returned to the capital having put the first dent in the S6 fortress. Wednesday: Weaver, Otsemobor, R Jones, Batth, R Johnson, M Jones (Lowe 64), Semedo, Lines, Marshall (Morrison 74), O’Grady, Madine (Llera 64) Unused substitutes: Bywater, Prutton Charlton: Hamer, Jackson, Morrison, Taylor, Green (Russell 72), WrightPhillips (Clarke 75), Wiggins, Pritchard (Cort 90), Solly, Hollands, Kermorgant Unused substitutes: Sullivan, Stephens

MEGSON REFLECTS ON DEFEAT GAFFERS REACTION www.swfc.co.uk

Gary Megson reflected on the Owls’ first home defeat of the season and hailed Charlton as the best side seen in S6 this term. Johnnie Jackson’s stunning free kick proved the difference in a scrappy encounter that saw the Addicks cement their position at the top of the table. And Megson said the Londoners’ position at the summit is exactly where they deserve to be: “Charlton are the best side we have played this season. They have set the pace from day one and you can see why. “The last thing you can do is give a well organised side like Charlton a goal start but I have to say it was a terrific strike. “We huffed and puffed without causing them any real problems and too many of our players were under par. “Most of our lads were ten per cent below their normal game and you can’t do that against anyone, let alone the league leaders.” The game signalled the end of Ben Marshall’s loan move to Hillsborough and Megson confirmed there was no significant update on the winger’s situation. He said: “Ben will go back to Stoke on Monday and take it from there. He has been absolutely magnificent for Sheffield Wednesday and we will still be doing everything that we possibly can to bring him back here. “I didn’t think he was anything like the player we have been used to today but he has a lot going on right now and it’s a lot for someone of 30 years old, never mind a 20-year-old. “But like I say, most of the players were under par today. We have two choices now, we either let this result get to us or we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and move forward. “I can assure you it will be the second one.”

BLADES TAKE SHAKERS POINTS MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

More Unitedites than Shakers were inside Gigg Lane to see the Blades make it three wins on the bounce. Second half goals from Richard Cresswell, Ched Evans, his 18th of the season, and Lee Williamson ensured that the 3,738 supporters, who made the trip across the Pennines on a cold January day, went home happy. The victory kept the Blades in second spot in League One and in good form ahead of the next fixture - an away day at leaders Charlton Athletic. Boss Wilson kept faith with the same starting XI and substitutes bench that recorded a 4-0 victory in midweek. Lowton and Williamson, on the right flank, set off where they left off against Yeovil and linked up early on, with the former forcing the game’s first corner in Lancashire. Lowton, Quinn, McDonald and the front two of Cresswell and and Evans were all heavily involved as United looked the more dangerous in the opening 15 minutes. For the home side, Amoo got clear on the right but his cross was poor and Maguire headed clear two other attacks. Evans hit a left-footer that was comfortable for Belford and a right-footer that deflected off the head of Sodje, whilst on 29 minutes, the first serious save of the day came from Simonsen, who pushed away a shot from Schumacher and Jean-Francois made a timely tackle as Amoo looked to get on to the rebound. In the closing moments of the first half, referee Miller ignored United’s appeals

for a penalty when Hughes prevented Cresswell from connecting with McDonald’s cross, whilst the visitors were forced to soak up a spell of pressure from Bury as half-time approached. Like the first half, the Blades began well in the second period and Evans hammered a free-kick wide before Cresswell, unmarked at the near post, headed wide a Williamson cross. The striker, however, was to make amends just a minute later. With 54 minutes gone, McDonald was cool on the ball, easing away from two white shirts before delivering a pass from left to right and CRESSWELL managed to beat the offside trap, before curling, left-footed, beyond the right-hand of the goalkeeper, into the corner of the net. Jean-Francois produced a great tackle to prevent Bishop levelling from Worrall’s cutback, before United doubled the lead, again with McDonald creating, on 62 minutes. The midfielder picked found EVANS in space and the Welshman’s shot towards the near post proved too hot to handle for goalkeeper Belford. Amoo, now operating as a central striker as Bury pushed more men forward, looped over at poor effort and the home side made changes in an attempt to get back into the contest but it was to no avail as United added a third just inside the last ten minutes. Once again it was Lowton and WILLIAMSON linking up on the right, this time from a throw-in, before the midfielder cut onto his left and drilled into the bottom corner. Williams replaced Quinn soon after the third goal and late on Beattie and Porter made cameo appearances. Just two minutes of added-time saw a lot of the home fans make their way to the exit doors, but the Blades fans inside the ground waited for the final whistle to applaud the men in red and white.

DANNY WILSON PRAISES TRIO GAFFERS REACTION www.sufc.co.uk

Danny Wilson was keen to reserve special praise for the influential Kevin McDonald, following Saturday’s resounding 3-0 victory at Gigg Lane. The Scotsman, who has been in excellent form of late, had a hand in all three of the Blades goals in the second-half, but it was his complete performance that understandably pleased the boss the most: “Kevin orchestrated everything through the middle of the park. Him and Doyle were tremendous and Kevin has got that pass in him when he can probe and split defences. “You saw at Bury what he is capable of, in making the killer pass, but overall his choice of pass and assessment of the situation was first class and his decision making was tremendous. “Kevin is like a lot of good players better when they are loved and are playing with confidence. Sometimes you have push individuals and for Kevin it is about getting it right himself, we know he is a good player and if he continues taking everything on board he will blossom further.” Both starting strikers were on target against the Shakers and Wilson has nothing but praise for Ched Evans and Richard Cresswell: “Ched and Richard worked themselves to a stand still and their goals were richly deserved. If you have two willing lads up front like we have then you won’t go far wrong. They also contribute massively defensively and I can’t say enough for their efforts.”

GAFFER DELIGHTED GAFFERS REACTION www.sufc.co.uk

Close to 4,000 Blades supporters populated the stands at Bury on Saturday much to the delight of Danny Wilson. As the United players emerged from the tunnel they were greeted by a travelling army of Blades followers behind both goals and half way down one side of the main stand. Wilson commented: “We received incredible support and the lads responded by producing what was without doubt the best away performance of the season to date.” The home support was actually out numbered by the United following on the day and the Gaffer certainly thinks they played their part in the resounding success: “Away from home we want to be tough to beat on the field, but off it the fans are getting tough to beat, they were tremendous and were singing well after the final whistle. “The have witnessed a marvelous performance and I am sure they will have enjoyed the rest of their weekend’s after returning back over the Pennines with another win.”
