NIGHT MARKET IN SHEFFIELD CITY CENTRE From Shanghai to Shefﬁeld - a new series of Night Markets will bring a touch of the east to city shoppers. The ﬁrst event will be held on Wednesday, February 8, from 8am until 9pm in Barker’s Pool. Co-organiser James Peterson of JC Market Events said his plan to hold a monthly event in Barker’s Pool had been inspired by four years of living in China. “Night markets are a way of life over

there so when I came back it seemed a good idea to hold a similar event in my home city, here too many shops and markets still all shut at 5pm or so, so when I made an application to the council, they said ﬁne.” The market is expected to feature around 50 stalls with the emphasis on local arts, crafts and produce. “The concept is that everything sold there will have been made or manufactured by

a Shefﬁeld person,” James Peterson said. “We want to provide space for small Shefﬁeld businesses that will be able to showcase their products in a prime location and on an evening which is already established for late night shopping.” Stalls already signed up include those selling ice cream, chocolate and biscuits. Students from Norton College are also set to have a stall featuring their own business ideas.

Probably the question I am most frequently asked concerns the Forest Showbar in Rutland Road, and whether Gary Phillips and Norman Bottom still own the pub. I am happy to report that this popular couple do indeed still are the owners and are at present taking a year off to concentrate on their other business interest, the Meadowhead Fish Bar, which incidentally is the best chip shop for miles around. The Forest has enjoyed great success since being bought by this likeable pair due much to the fact that the majority of the live entertainment has been provided by award winner Gary himself and the warm welcome they have extended to all customers, with the sign in the pub which reads ‘enter as a customer, leave as a friend’ being most apt. Although the pub is now managed, Gary keeps in touch with his multitude of friends, who are also customers by appearing every other Saturday night, the next one being this Saturday. I have had some fabulous nights at the Forest, with everybody being so friendly, and never any trouble, and every single person I introduced there has been anxious to return. Another bonus for me is that the beer is always superb. Amazingly, on Saturday night, I discovered a pub that was very similar, with welcoming landlord and landlady and a smashing friendly crowd. Needless to say, I had a chat with every one of them. This fabulous pub is the Star Inn at Pilsley on the outskirts of Chesterﬁeld, and the purpose of our visit was to have a great night of entertainment provided by the wonderful Sunny Daye. She was fantastic, immediately connecting with the audience, and her many years in the business shone through with a superb professional performance. She is amazing, and still top of her profession, and I am pleased to report that she is returning to the Star in May. I have never been particularly health conscious, believing that our fate is decided on the day we are born, and have been a heavy smoker from an early age and a regular drinker, though never to excess, and so the news that if one has processed food on a daily basis it increases one’s chances of getting prostrate cancer by twenty per cent.

My mother, God Bless her, always told me that breakfast was the most important meal of the day, and accordingly have always indulged in a full English breakfast every day with plenty of bacon and tomato sausage. Since I discovered Dougie’s meat van, who is to be found at Lowedges terminus every Wednesday and in the car park of Job Lot in Eckington on Thursday’s, where the produce is the best ever, I can see no end to this supposed threat to my well-being, as so to speak the bacon and sausage are to die for. I also get well stocked up there with plenty of chicken and sirloin steak, and I have no hesitation in passing this tip on to readers of this column, although I will probably have to get there a bit earlier before they sell out if everyone takes advantage of my advice. Give them a try, you will never go anywhere else. Am I the only Wednesdayite who wanted the Blades to beat Charlton on Saturday? My words that it would have been in the Blades favour for Wednesday to beat Charlton the week before have rung true as had that been the case and United won on Saturday, the Blades would be top of the league at the time of writing. As things are now, Charlton have opened up a seven point lead with five clubs now fighting for the one automatic place remaining. Both Sheffield clubs may well finish up in the play off positions which can’t be good, as I suspect that if Huddersfield can keep hold of their goal machine, Justin Rhodes, they will take second spot, and we all know that United’s record in play offs is extremely poor. As I am desperate for both Sheffield clubs to be promoted, I shall be cheering both teams on in the second half of the season. I suspect that the position will be much clearer at the end of February, a month that will be decisive for both clubs, with the local derby being of paramount importance. I urge supporters of both Sheffield clubs to cheer on each other’s teams, apart from the derby game. Somehow, I have great doubts about this happening. Celebrity Big Brother is compulsive viewing for me, although I can think of more suitable housemates to go topless than Denise Welsh. For some reason, Channel five are making a better job of it than Channel Four.

I bought some chicken earlier to make sandwiches. Don’t think he’s up to it though, he’s just running round the kitchen clucking like a baffoon. I had no idea time zones were so far apart... Organ Donation: giving the cadavers of Jedward over to medical science would not only prove invaluable in the training of future surgeons, it would also answer the question: can a human function without a working brain? Unfortunately, in Jedward’s case, it can! Crash Test Dummies. Not a great deal would be gained from seeing the hapless duo propelled into a brick wall at one hundred miles per hour, but the result is something I’d definitely pay to see! Discovering the limits of pain tolerance: for no reason, really. Just throwing it out there… This all got me thinking about similar shows Simon Cowell could ‘wow’ us with in 2012. You could have Celebrity Death Snatch, in which Tara PalmerTomkinson has a live stick of dynamite inserted into her… And, unfortunately, that’s all I’ve got time for this week. I’ve just got a few moments to remind you that the final of Celebrity Big Brother is coming up, and it looks as though the public is voting for the American entries: that’s right the brain-dead bimbos (Kristina and Chlamydia) are the favourites to win. What are you all doing? We’re showing our “love” for the ultra vacuous, self-obsessed and hopelessly deluded. Waxwork dummies have more about them than these two egos on sticks - they’ve got all the personality of candyfloss (and eating too much of either will make you sick). Get voting to save the only real choice. Show the nation has a heart and that we can forgive mistakes of youth. Vote Frankie Cocozza!

REVEREND & THE MAKERS ANNOUNCED AS NOEL GALLAGHER SUPPORT

After enjoying a rest for nearly two years one of Sheffield’s most well known, successful bands from the last decade Reverend & The Makers are back with a bang and preparing to support Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds on his upcoming tour including a hometown gig at the Motorpoint Arena on Sunday the 19th of February. After a few years of travelling the world and throwing free parties with the Reverend Sound System front man Jon McClure has decided it’s time to “get back to the day job”. Their new album is out this summer and Jon announced this week that the first single will be available as a free download via their Facebook page the week before they set off on tour with Gallagher. Commenting on the making of the album Jon said: “I just kind of fell into writing this album by accident and the next thing was it was nearly finished. I’m bang into it - which you’ll all expect me to say. But I enjoyed making it more than any album I’ve made so far. It’s all up and mainly bangers, so we had a right old laugh in the process. Special thanks go to Ed the Pilot and Jimmy and his Onkens.” “The album is being produced by a combination of Jason Cox and James Dring (Gorrrilaz, Good the Bad & the Queen) and Youth (The Verve, U2) and for what its worth there’s no politics on the album. Why not? Well as much as I’m into all that and I still believe much the same, I’ve said it now and it quickly becomes boring if you labour the point too much. In truth I sort of bored myself with it. SAFE & SECURE SHEFFIELD MARKS MOOR VIEWS WITH STAYPUT HOLOCAUST Yvonne Allott told members of Sheffield 50+ about Stayput’s ‘Handyperson’ scheme at their meeting on 5 January. This is a completely free service for anyone in Sheffield aged 65 and over or under 65 with a disability or lifelong limiting illness. The handyperson can carry out small repairs and minor adaptations such as: • Installing grab rails, hand rails and additional stair rails • Putting up curtain poles and shelves • Home safety checks including installing locks and safety chains • Securing loose carpets and falls prevention • Moving furniture • And much more……. Stayput ask recipients of the service to pay for any equipment they need such as handrails, locks and chains but the fitting is entirely free of charge. The service is non means tested and available to people living in private or rented properties. The main categories of work are: • Falls prevention work • Fire safety • Security work • Energy efficiency • Minor adaptations • Electrician safety • Small repairs and maintenance • Small DIY jobs Major adaptations, large jobs, and those lasting more than half a day are not included in the scheme. The aim is to help people to live more safely, securely and for longer in their own home. Yvonne demonstrated a door viewer which can be purchased for £2.50 and subject to suitability fitted to doors free of charge. The viewer is ideal for speaking to callers without opening the door. The handypersons are paid employees and the project is funded by Sheffield City Council.

The Travel Solutions Team are extremely pleased to support each and every person with their travel options. Many customers are planning their support, this is called ‘support planning’, and it means having choice about how to meet their personal goals. The Travel Solutions Team is very proud to offer people all the travel options available to them, giving everyone the chance to experience new ways of getting around and about. A Travel Plan can be part of a support plan. Alan asked the Travel Solutions Team for help when he was support planning. “I recently had an assessment to work out my personal budget. This was carried out with a social worker from the older people’s service. I was then told how much I was entitled to. This was then followed by my planning, at which time I expressed which services I wished to use. HARRY WORTH Carrying on from the article about the Blue Harmony boys a couple of weeks ago I though thought it would be well worth, excuse the pun, mentioning my father’s uncle Harry Worth. Harry started his career in local clubs and is surely one of our most famous sons. Harry Illingsworth was born on 20th November 1917, Fitzwilliam Street, Hoyland Common, South Yorkshire, died 20 July 1989,Hertfordshire) was an English comedy actor and comedian. His standard performance was as a genial, bumbling middle-class and middle-aged man from the North of England, who reduced all who came into contact with him to a state of confusion and frustration. Worth was the youngest of eleven children of a miner. When he was only ﬁve months old his father died from injuries resulting from an industrial accident. He left school at 14 and was himself a miner for eight years before joining the RAF As a teenager he was in the Tankersley Amateur Dramatic Society and taught himself , buying his ﬁrst dummy in 1936. He toured for two years with Laurel and Hardy towards the end of their careers. Oliver Hardy persuaded him to drop the ventriloquist routine and concentrate on becoming a comedian which he then did. He did, however, continue to include the vent act in his cabaret act

through his career. Worth’s first appearance was a five-minute standup on “Henry Hall’s Guest Night” in 1955.He is now best remembered for his 1960s series Here’s Harry, later re-titled Harry Worth, which lasted for over 100 episodes. The opening titles of Harry Worth featured the comedian stopping in the street to perform an optical trick involving a shop window (raising one arm and one leg which were reflected in the window, thus giving the impression of levitation). Reproducing this effect was popularly known as “doing a Harry Worth”. He also starred in Thirty Minutes Worth and My Name is Harry Worth.One famous comic sketch involved Worth and his family preparing for a royal visit to the area, during which the Queen was to visit his house. His fussing about the house drove his family mad. Just before the Queen was due to arrive, a beggar arrived at the door and kept coming back as an increasingly frustrated Worth tried to get him to go away. The Bill exempts venues, including thousands of pubs with a capacity of 200 persons or fewer, from the need to obtain a licence for live music before 11pm. The Bill must now return to the House of Lords for approval, although it’s not expected to receive significant opposition there. The Coalition gave its backing to the Bill, originally introduced by Liberal Democrat peer Lord Clement-Jones, as part of its stated aim to reduce red tape for live performances. British Beer & Pub Association chief executive Brigid Simmonds said: “This really is music to our ears. Pubs are where live music begins – and for years, we’ve been saying that many of the regulations surrounding it are unnecessary – they have prevented publicans from making the most of Britain’s pubs as the place where live music acts first get a foothold. “Well done to MPs for voting this through – let’s make it the first of many measures to cut the red tape surrounding pubs.” catchphrase was generally known as “My Name Is Harry Worth. WHICH ARE THE OLDEST CLUBS? THE PROBLEM OF EVIDENCE

I often get enquiries about which is the oldest club in the country or which is the oldest one still operating. It’s not so simple as I’d like it to be to answer what seem to be such straightforward questions! What I wouldn’t give for a definite list of ALL clubs that have ever existed, when they were first opened and when closed or, more positively, if they are still open today. I do my best to compile whatever information I find as I carry out my research and what people kindly offer through my website. Some of the difficulties relate to lack of documented evidence: the first clubs began to appear from the mid-19th century and whilst some club secretaries were conscientious in writing things down, not all were. Even when good records were kept, fires were a constant danger and a great deal of documents have literally gone up in smoke! It wasn’t only the clubs in wooden huts that were at risk of fire breaking out. Cigarettes end that weren’t put out properly could cause much damage. Another factor is that many clubs moved premises several times over as they expanded and documents could be lost in transit. We could probably trust the old-timers in the membership to tell us when clubs opened, who was the first President and so on. There are always great memories to help us out but when thinking about the really old clubs, these oldtimers are long gone. If no-one wrote down their memories, they are now lost too. That is why I do my best to document club memories and encourage others to do so. Another point that can complicate answering those simple questions is that clubs sometimes changed their names- some to be so radically different from what they started off as that few might associate two names with the same club. One of the oldest known clubs, for example, is the Walthamstow WMC but that began life as the St. James Club.The CIU have some records and we can look to them for information but not all clubs were CIU affiliated so there might be big gaps. I will keep trying to fill as many gaps as possible and welcome help from those with relevant information.

One of only a tiny handful of festivals to label itself as an ‘indoor event,’ Hammerfest IV is back with an almighty vengeance alongside a line-up and location to match. Although tickets are now in very high demand, Mercury Newspaper is opening a very special competition both in ‘M-Live’ and on our facebook and twitter pages….so who fancied a pair of free tickets then?! Famed for his ‘say it as it is’ mentality, expect charisma and energy in abundance as delivered by lead vocalist Benji Webbe, who having recently played at Sheffield’s Corporation will no doubt deliver big for Hammerfest. Amon Amarth, Swedish melodic death metal five piece are also scheduled to kick some Welsh ass, along with the massive Anthrax and Paradise Lost as main headline support on Friday 16th March. Unlike your typical festival… ‘lets pitch a tent, lets get all stressed, let’s throw a paddy’ scenario, Hammerfest IV offers that little bit extra comfort with all accommodation coming in the form of Pontin’s holiday cabins. Expect kitchens, heating and duvets (hell its more a luxury holiday as oppose to a festival) throughout the weekend, ensuring a festival of pure adulterated madness. It’s always a comforting feeling to know that you’re hard earned cash is being spent on something worth-while right? But it’s also a total given that the best way to have a good old knees up is to get yourself down to a cracking live gig… following? Combining the two this Saturday 28th January, Sheffield’s Leadmill is hosting a mini festival charity extravaganza to not only deliver a tip-top night of live music, but also in support of two very worthy charities…be rude not to ey! The Leadmill, 360 Live and BBC Introducing presents the Crème de la Crème of Sheffield’s local music, to be broadcast over the Yorkshire region. Twelve local bands on the bill will each be recorded for a BBC Introducing Mash Up Session with BBC Radio Sheffield, Leeds, York and Hull Stations, so expect first rate performances throughout the entire night. Representing Yorkshire’s talent include The Monday Club, rock ‘n’ roll three piece The Velotones along with Famous villains, Volume Zero and A Season of Secrets, Sheffield’s very own slice of rock/ pop punk. Combine with this Fatty Brown and the Food Division, Steel Trees and Blessa, its pretty safe to say Leadmill really is the place to be this weekend. In support of two very worthy local charities, all proceeds from the £2 ticket price will be donated equally to the Children’s Hospital and Headway. Offering outstanding care for some of the countries most vulnerable and in need youngsters, Sheffield’s Children’s Hospital is not only a life line for many sick and needy but also in great need of any kind of charity support or funding. The second cause, Headways is equally as worthy and provides much needed support and care for people affected by brain injury. Working on a national level as well as within the community, Headways attempts to spread information about the causes and effects of brain damage as well as provide rehabilitation and guidance for victims. Tickets for the show can be purchased on the Leadmill Website (www.leadmill.co.uk) for £2, which entitles entry into the infamous Sonic Boom club night after (if you’re lucky enough to be eighteen years or older!) But hurry, tickets are selling fast so don’t miss out on a bolting night of live music for a superb cause.

GET PERVERTED The Scratch Perverts - a name that has become synonymous with HipHop and battle DJing ever since their formation in 1996. Their reputation as one of the world’s most progressive DJ collectives is unparalleled; two consecutive World DMC Team titles, Plus One’s World DMC Champion and World Vestax Champion titles, Prime Cut’s back to back World ITF Scratching crowns, and countless showcases and gigs all over the world. Having won all there is to offer in the competition circuit, the Perverts are ready to enter the next stage of their development as recording artists. But as DJs who have contributed countless techniques and pioneered such radical innovations developing the musical language of the turntable, what the Perverts deﬁne as HipHop is a long way off what people would expect. “HipHop is a celebration of all kinds of music just by its very nature,” explains Prime Cuts. “So it follows that our album is very much a HipHop album in the broadest sense of the term. We’ve tried to do what we see HipHop as being – a celebration of all music, taking on board everything that inspires us and channelling it into our tracks.” The ideals created by the likes of Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa developed through HipHop’s formative years, originality, dynamism and innovation are all principles that the Perverts have applied to their DJing art and now to their music. “We’ve tried to bring the mentality behind our creativity with turntables to the studio,” explains Tony. “We’re looking to show the same sense of independent thought in our music.” The Perverts have always unselfconsciously embraced and incorporated anything that feels right musically, which is evident when you consider that they count the likes of The Neptunes, Dillinja, Red

It’s not just a rapper that makes a record a HipHop record its about a vibe – and if a record has that vibe I personally look upon it as being integrally HipHop.” At the same time, however, the Perverts last intention is to make an album of sound-a-like productions “We are different,” asserts Plus One. “If we make a breakbeat track it’s not gonna sound like the Stantons, if we make a HipHop track hopefully it won’t sound like the Neptunes, if we do something leaning towards drum & bass it might end up more like a rock track.” Although they may have retired from battling indeﬁnitely, the Perverts have lost none of their supercharged competitive spirit. “We still have that proper B-Boy ethic deep down at the core of it all,” explains Plus One. “It’s this need to take someone out, to do better than them,” adds Prime Cuts. “For example, listening to a Dillinja track and thinking that’s so heavy, I wanna do something better than that – it’s that mentality that drives us, we wanna take on something that we’ve heard someone else do and try to do it better.” These days, instead of spending hours building battle routines to take each other out, the Perverts are crafting beats to do exactly the same thing! “We’re always trying to out do each other,” Plus One says with a grin. “Even though we’re all working towards the same cause, still at the core of it is that energy – I wanna make the best tune this week, I want to have the ideas, and that gives us this immense drive that maybe other people don’t have.”

An extremely busy week for me over the last few days, and after previous disasters, I even managed to get on the bank to do some .............. fishing! A short day session to Cudmore Fishery to target big perch was a bit hit and miss if I’m honest; my quivertip barely flinched during the few hours I stuck at it, so an additional pike rod was pieced together and lashed out towards an island swim at about 50 yards, into a good depth of water. Baited with a big half of herring, I was quickly into an unseen monster which I cautiously played for almost 10 minutes without seeing it and, just as I was starting to gain the upper hand, my trebles slipped out and the fish was lost! My first hook up of the year and I lost it without seeing it! It made a right mess of a good sized bait, and as the only fish which ever get away are bigger than any I ever catch, I wouldn’t like to say how big it could have been..... During the day however, my bobbins were constantly twitching as a series of smaller pike tried to pick and run with a bait plainly too big for them, and the only fish which hit the bank was a splendidly coloured winter pike of around 8lbs. Despite bitter temperatures, cold winds and high pressure, they were definitely feeding, and Cudmore is always good for a bend in the rods. This week has also seen the culmination of an awful lot of work for me. The announcement of the final line up of the proposed ‘Pallatrax Posse’ was made this week, and instantly hit a snag. No sooner had the news hit the web than bigger companies were sniffing around to poach ‘our’ anglers. Sadly it’s a common trade tactic to take advantage of the work that others do, and I really wish it didn’t happen, but it does, so we have to fight them off by offering ‘our’ anglers a good deal in sponsorship. The Posse is the result of some very difficult judging of a range of tasks submitted by ‘wannabes’ keen to join the team at Pallatrax. We have had many applications which were either full of errors or submitted in using an incorrect format, or completely at odds with the set task; - there is no way I can consider giving sponsorship to someone who fails to read the instructions, or write anything coherent, but you wouldn’t believe the excuses we have had when we have questioned the applicants! It appears that catching a couple of lucky big fish now constitutes grounds for Pallatrax to shower free bait and tackle on any angler who approaches us, with the demand that we offer them a filed tester post. When I ask what they have to offer us, you can hear them scratch their heads in wonder!! If you are an aspiring angler, desperate to be famous, then think long and hard about the sacrifices you may have to make; the long hours on the bank are only part of it.......and it’s not all about what you get out of the company who sponsor your angling!

It’s another big weekend in the run-up to the Cheltenham Festival where plenty more clues are likely to be on offer as Cheltenham and Doncaster host Saturday’s top meetings this side of the Irish Sea and Leopardstown puts on a high class meeting over the water on Saturday and Sunday. The terrestrial TV racing schedule on Channel 4 includes four races from Cheltenham and two from Doncaster. The current schedule has the 2.05, 2.35, 3.10 and 3.40 from Cheltenham with the 2.50 and 3.25 from Doncaster but do check these on the day as sometimes they are altered late on. It is fairly common for high proﬁle races that cut up badly to be re-scheduled to provide more handicap fodder for the Scoop 6 (as happened last week). Saturday: Cheltenham: 2.05 Murphy Group Chase (Handicap), Grade 3, Class 1, 2 miles 5 furlongs; My top rated animal, Fine Parchment, has been running below par this year and for that reason is overlooked here. The one I am siding with is Pail Nicholls’ Woolcombe Folly whose last time out performance earns him the vote. That was back In November when he ran second to Gauvain in the Shloer Chase, a race that was run a pretty fast time. He can come on for that run and should go off at a reasonable price given the competitive nature of this race. Chance du Roy, Calgary Bay and Aerial are others that ran well last time and, along with the top rated Fine Parchment, are likely to provide the chief threats to the selection. 2.35 Argento Chase, Grade 2, Class 1, 3 miles 1 ½ furlongs: Grands Crus was very impressive when winning the Feltham Novices Chase at Kempton over

This was another race run in a very good time for the conditions and I am hopeful that he can follow up that effort by winning again here, given that his connections are eyeing a crack at the Gold Cup itself with him. However, this race should be a pretty stern test for a novice with the likes of Diamond Harry, Hennessy winner Carruthers, Time For Rupert and Tidal Bay in opposition. All can go well here and it would be no great surprise to see any or all of them give the selection a real fright. Others in with a squeak on some form are The Sawyer and Any Currency. 3.10 Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle, Grade 2, Class 1, 2 miles 4 ½ furlongs: All the Winds is burdened with my top rating followed by Polisky but the ones I like best are Forgotten Gold and Batonnier from their form behind Barabatos here on New Year’s Day. There is not much between them on running then but I have a very marginal preference for Batonnier and that earns him the vote, albeit by the narrowest of margins. Of the others Broadbackbob, Knight Pass, Benheir, Hard to Swallow and Secret Edge all have the potential to do well and are likely to present real danger to the selection. 3.40 Cleeve Hurdle, Grade 2, Class 1, 3 miles: I am giving up on trying to get him beat because he is bad value so Big Bucks has to be the selection although he won’t be a great price. Five Dream, Restless Harry, Kayf Aramis, Dynaste and Mourad look the most likely ones to provide an upset if there were to be one but since all have been soundly beaten by BB before it is hard to see them getting past him. Across the Bay could be a surprise package although he was beaten by Dynaste at Haydock. If the novice Hard to Swallow were to line up for this instead of the previous race he may have an outside chance and at least has not met the selection previously.

Local Football by Michael Clarke Meadowhall League Cup Round-up Things got back to normal this weekend in the Meadowhall League, after bad weather last week led to the postponement of all but two games.Wadsley Bridge WMC progressed in the Senior cup following a nine goal thriller against JSS Pot. Wadsley won the game 5-4 to move into the Semi-Finals of the competition. The Meadowhall teams in the Junior were not as lucky though. Despite a goal from Oliver Haywood, City Taxis New Inn were beat 4-1 by Hatfield Celtic. Penistone Church were also knocked out by Memories. The scores were level at 3-3 after 120 minutes, but Memories came out as winner 5-4 on penalties.In the League Cup, goals from Kurtis Hodder (2) and Karlda Lewin gave Heeley a 3-0 away win over Sharrow United U21’s. Division One leaders Arundel gave Handsworth Turf Tavern a run for their money, but a penalty from Russell Hobson and Paul Turner strike was enought to see the Premier Division outft through.There was a shock in the U21 Cup, as Under 21 Division side Norton Oaks U21’s beat the African Dream Team of the Third Division comfortably 3-0. Goals from Matthew Scothorne and Conor Merrison (2) were enough to put the youngsters into the Second Round. Premier Division Hackenthorpe A climbed to the summit of the Premier Division with an excellent 3-1 win over Packhorse Inn. The vital goals for Hackenthorpe came from Cole Hattersley, Carlos Forbes and Jamie Sampson. High Noon relinquished their hold on first place following a narrow 1-0 loss to third placed Crookes at Warminster Road. Last years’ winners Roal Earl carried on their rise, by beating Mosborough A 2-1 at the Phoenix Sports and Social Club. Scott Bates and Darren Schofield grabbed the goals for the Earl. A Philip Miskell penalty was enough to give Greenhill White Hart a 1-0 win over Sharrow United. The loss is Sharrow’s third in succession.

Doncaster: 2.50 Skybet Chase (Handicap), Listed, Class 1, 3 miles: In what looks a very tight handicap the nod goes to Emma Lavelle’s Qianshan Leader whose narrow victory over Benny Be Good over this course and distance last time is probably the best form on offer. The chief dangers would appear to be Calgary Bay, Aerial, Tamarinbleu, Fruity O’Rooney, Hold on Julio and Shakalakboomboom – the last pair being not yet fully exposed in my opinion. Amongst the others there are some disappointing or out-of-form ones but the list of possible shocks or surprises looks to comprise: Etxalar; Riguez Dancer; Merigo; Nikola; and King Fontaine.

Division One Joseph Highﬁeld grabbed the winner for Brunsmeer Abbey, as they beat Beighton Magpies 1-0 at the HSBC Sports Club. The win takes Brunsmeer above the Arundel and into ﬁrst place in the table. Two goals from Hanson inspired Intake Ball Inn to a 3-1 away win over the HSBC. HSBC climb to third with the win.

3.25 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle, Grade 2, Class 1, 3 miles ½ furlong: I like the look of David Pipe’s African Broadway for this one. Tom George’s Rival D’Estruval could be the one to give the selection most to do but, should they appear here, Forgotten Gold, Knight Pass, Rolling Aces, Gullinbursti and Rev It Up are all capable of giving the above pair a real race.

Division Three There was a big game in the Third Division, where leaders Woodhouse Juniors hosted third placed Centre Spot. Carter Mpwaya won the match for Woodhouse, scoring both the goals in a 2-1 win. Welsey Hewitt scored an amazing ﬁve goals in Carlton Social’s 6-3 defeat of FC Darnall. Carlton consolidated their second place position with the win. FC Darnall remain bottom.

Sunday: Leopardstown: 1.25 Frank Ward Solicitors Arkle Novices’ Chase, Grade 1, 2 miles 1 furlong: I reckon that the form of Blackstairmountain’s last time out win holds the key to this one and he should be able to follow up if he turns up. However his trainer has several entries and there are some well touted horses amongst the opposition. If the above selection doesn’t line up then Notus de la Tour can take advantage followed (if he himself is absent) by Foildubh, Lucky William and Baily Green all of whose form comes from Blackstairmountain’s last race.

Under 21 Division Dronﬁeld Town U21’s moved three points clear at the top of the U21 Division, after they beat Dronﬁeld Athletic U21’s 3-0 at Graves Park. Samuel Wilkinson scored a hat-trick for Greasebrough U21’s against Mosborough U21’s, but it was not enough to give his team the win, as they were held to an exciting 4-4 draw. Craig Fox scored twice to inspire New Bohemians to a 4-1 away win over Frecheville Reserves. The win takes New Bohemians to eighth place, above Frecheville.

2.30 BHP Insurance Irish Champion Hurdle, Grade 1, 2 miles: This should be an absolute cracker with six top class performers lining up. In the run up to this there has been some concern about whether Hurricane Fly is back to his best but his trainer now seems happy with him and presumably he has a favourite’s chance. However, given the possible cloud over the favourite, I like the prospect of a surprise package in the shape of Oscar’s Well who has a real chance on some of his form. Admittedly he has a bit to ﬁnd with Unaccompanied and Thousand Stars on last time out form however but the odds reﬂect this. If the selection doesn’t oblige Voler La Vedette, Thousand Stars and Unaccompanied all have perfectly respectable chances of causing an upset themselves so the current 4/7 best offer about the Champion Hurdler looks a bit short to me. Kalann is the only one that looks a little out of his depth in this line up, but you never know! Division Two Goalless draws are a rare occurrence in Sunday League football, but lightning struck twice in the Second Division as both scheduled games ended scoreless. Firstly, leaders Rawson Spring were held by Winn Gardens at Ferrars Road. Winn Gardens did move into second with the point, but remain four points off the lead. The Millers narrowly lost out 1-0 at a blustery Don Valley Stadium where a Marc Richards penalty sealed the points for the visitors. The windy conditions denied any chance of a freeflowing game as the Millers were unable to break down a resolute Port Vale defence. The first chance of the game came on eight minutes when Lewis Grabban cut inside before firing his shot well over Stuart Tomlinson’s crossbar. The blustery conditions were making things awkward for both defences and a great long ball by Jason Taylor put Doug Loft under pressure, before Grabban nipped in ahead of the onrushing Tomlinson but was unable to keep his effort down. Port Vale were spurred on by the early Millers chances and began to have some promising attacks of their own. The visitors first came close when Loft cut inside from the left hand side and fired his shot at the bottom corner, but his effort was expertly turned around the post by Rhys Taylor. A good run and cross by Robert Taylor saw his looping ball find an unmarked Richards at the back post but his acrobatic effort went well over denying the visitors a good chance to take the lead. The visitors were making good use of having the wind behind them and some more neat wing play saw Ben Williamson drive into the box and fire a shot just across the face of the Millers’ goal. There had been wind, there had been rain and visibility had been poor for part of the way from Doncaster but on arrival in Bristol there was periodic bursts of sunshine, no rain and the wind had abated somewhat. The Rovers starting line-up was unchanged from last week against Cardiff City and again there was no substitute keeper on the bench. The home team made four changes, with the biggest surprise being Nicky Maynard’s name appearing on the list of substitutes instead of in the starting line-up. He was replaced by Albert Adomah and the other starters were Kalifa Cisse, Stephen Pearson and Yannick Bolasie. It was an important game for both teams because if the Rovers win it would put them one point behind the City, who would put some distance between themselves and the Rovers if they won. The Rovers, in their all-blue strip, defended the Atyeo Stand end, where the players dressing rooms are situated. The home team got off to a flying start, winning a corner in the first minute after a good run down the home right by Adomah. Then the same player headed wide at the near post to a cross from the right followed by a shot from 30 yards that Button saved comfortably. Foster also had a go from 30yards that Button pushed round a post for a corner. Another corner a couple of minutes later was headed wide of the near post by Skuse. All this in the first seven minutes. At last the Rovers got going in the 8th minute when Hird fed Coppinger, who flicked on to Gillett to go on and hit a shot from 20yards that James pushed round the near post for a corner. Two minutes later and a high ball to Sharp in the home penalty area wouldn’t come down quick enough so that his attempted left foot effort went wide. Minutes later Bolasie was only just over the bar with a fine shot from the edge of the penalty area. In the 17th minute a corner to the Rovers was headed wide of the near post by Beye. Two minutes later and the Rovers substituted Coppinger, who had been flattened earlier by Bolasie. A great cross from Diouf on the Rovers left was flicked on by Sharp but Hayter, on the six yard line behind him, couldn’t get his feet right and could only manage a gentle prod into the arms of James after 25 minutes. before firing another shot that Taylor could only parry over the crossbar. The Millers best chance came on the stroke of half time when Sam Wood’s brilliant delivery from his wide free-kick found an unmarked Johnny Mullins who should have done better with his header. The Millers started the brighter of the two sides and it wasn’t long before the first chance. Alex Revell almost capitalised on a mix up in the Port Vale defence when a deflected clearance fell kindly for him inside the six yard area, but he was unable to beat Tomlison who got down well to save. Some more good work by Loft saw him poke the ball just beyond Dale Tonge in the Millers’ area drawing a foul from the Rotherham full-back and giving the visitors the chance to take the lead from the penalty spot. Richards confidently stepped up and although Taylor guessed the right way he was powerless to stop the ball nestling in the bottom corner of his goal. Williamson was next to test the Rotherham defence as he latched onto a long ball before touching the ball beyond Taylor but Mullins read the play well and was on hand to deny the striker a certain goal. Danny Schofield almost levelled in spectacular fashion when he found himself with time and space on the edge of the area, before curling a left footed shot that went just wide of the top corner with Tomlinson well beaten. A spell of three Millers corners saw Andy Scott’s side come inches away from an equaliser. A stranded Tomlinson was only able to make weak contact with Tom Newey’s corner before Mullins’ goalbound header was scrambled off the line by a numerous of Port Vale defenders. a good chance of taking the lead, the Rovers went one goal down in the 26th minute when a cross from the home right was headed in from close range by WOOD. Kilkenny followed this with a shot from the right that Button had to go full length to tip past a post. The 29th minute brought more misery to the Rovers when Beye went lunging into a tackle at the corner flag and earned himself an instant red card. This brought another change for the Rovers, with Hayter sacrificed for Lockwood to take over in the middle of the defence. When the free kick was taken in the 31st minute CISSE was in the middle to head in for a second goal. It was all hands to the pumps now, backs-to-the-wall stuff etcetera as the home side poured forward. The Rovers managed to get in some sporadic attacks but made no impression on the City goal. The Rovers got the second half underway and straight away had to face a free kick from the edge of the penalty area, which was headed away. The Rovers then spent the next few minutes in the home half but gained no reward. Then, in the 53rd minute, Kilkenny had a twenty-five yarder saved comfortably by Button but they came again to win a corner, which brought an overhead kick from Bolasie that Button saved well. Continuing to attack, Wood was just wide from 18yards and Foster had a shot from distance easily pouched by Button. Whilst the home team were making their superiority in numbers pay off in possession they couldn’t breach the Rovers defence. Then, in the 75th minute, following a steady build-up from the back by playing keep-ball the Rovers got to the other end where Spurr put over a great cross for DIOUF from about twelve yards at the far post to head into the far corner. This spurred the Rovers to further efforts and for the remainder of the match it seemed that the Rovers had the extra man as they pushed for an equaliser. Sharp, on the left corner of the penalty area unleashed a thunderous left foot drive that James could only parry at the near post before clearing. Bennett spooned a shot over the bar from 20yards and on other occasions if the final pass to Sharp and Diouf had been more accurate then who knows what the final score could have been. Amazingly, the Rovers in that last quarter of the game had pushed the home team back on to the ropes giving the home crowd the jitters. On the final whistle the relief of the home fans was heard around the ground as their team took the three points.

In the first v second encounter in League One, the Blades were valiant in defeat. Danny Wilson’s United were more than a match for Charlton Athletic and the only difference was a Johnnie Jackson freekick, which found the top corner. The Blades created numerous chances but the late assault on the Addicks goal proved to be fruitless, whilst James Beattie became United’s first sending off of the season following an off-the-ball incident. Following comprehensive victories over Yeovil Town and Bury, boss Wilson stuck with the same starting XI and substitutes for a third consecutive fixture. Charlton’s Taylor conceded the game’s first corner and United, with a rehearsed move, went close but McDonald fired over after Williamson’s low centre, whilst the home side’s early threat centred around Green, who slung in a long throw and then was off target with a long-range free-kick. Doyle fired wide and Cresswell’s ball across goal was a threat as United started well but on 21 minutes a soft free-kick, given for an alledged foul on Hollands by Collins, gave the initiative to the home side. JACKSON, who had scored from a similar range the previous week, fired into the top corner from 25 yards, beating the right hand of Simonsen. United felt aggrieved but responded positively. Wiggins was booked following

a tangle with Evans and from the resulting 30-yard free-kick, on 26 minutes, Williamson’s shot needed pushing around a post by Hamer. Cresswell then placed the ball in the net but he had already been called offside. Charlton’s Kermorgant was optimistic with a overhead kick as United failed to clear a corner with half-time approaching, whilst two near post corners from the Blades caused problems for the home side. Firstly, Hamer dropped Williamson’s corner into his own net but referee Deadman awarded Athletic a free-kick, presumably for a foul by Cresswell on the goalkeeper, and then Maguire headed just over with the home goalkeeper failing to collect. Neither manager felt the need to makes changes for the second half and Charlton, or more specifically, Green, began well. He benefited from a mis-placed header from Jean-Francois before firing straight at Simonsen and then the home winger charged in from the right before hammering a shot which the goalkeeper batted away. Pritchard was booked for attempting to delay a Blades free-kick and Hamer was also shown a yellow card for timewasting - just after the hour - and the game was fractious at times. Cresswell was crowded out close to goal as Williamson headed back Quinn’s cross and then Evans fired over when Hamer dropped a corner on 66 minutes. At this stage, the Blades were asking questions of the Charlton defence - backed superbly by the travelling fans - but a couple of deliveries from McDonald were overhit and Cresswell headed just wide at the back post from a Williamson cross. As the game approached the final ten minutes the first changes were made with Williams and Beattie introduced for United. Doyle was cautioned, possibly for persistent infringements, and McDonald followed him into the book for a foul on

Kermorgant. Charlton’s substitute, Russell, lasted less than 10 minutes before he was shown a straight red card for lunging in on McDonald. After referee Deadman consulted with his assistants, Beattie was also dismissed for his role in the melee that ensued and Kermorgant was let off with a yellow. Evans headed wide as United continued to search for an equaliser and Wilson used his final change to bring on another striker to fill the void left by Beattie as Porter replaced Williamson. Five added minutes were announced and Williams was the last to be booked for a foul on Haynes, whilst Lowton’s cross in injury-time clipped the top of the crossbar with Hamer relieved due to his poor positioning. Wiggins cleared for a corner after Porter and McDonald won headers and the leaders managed to hold on to their slender lead - clearly showing their delight when the referee’s final whistle was blown. The travelling Unitedites, meanwhile, sung the Greasy Chip Buttie song as the players trudged off, expressing their gratitude for the effort in the capital. Danny Wilson was proud of his players, despite suffering a narrow defeat at Charlton Athletic on Saturday. However, he was left frustrated by a number of key decisions by the ofﬁcials, particularly the build up to the only goal of the game and the sending off James Beattie - United’s ﬁrst red card of the campaign. In the after-match press conference, the Blades boss was keen to highlight his team’s performance, which drew a standing ovation from the packed away end at The Valley. “I thought we were brilliant,” said Wilson. “We pummelled them in the second half. Charlton had two shots at goal in the whole match and if the ball had fallen kindly for us in the box we would have won the game. It is a mini setback but I was mightily encouraged by the performance. “The whole display was outstanding, as was the support from the fans. The ovation at the end was a barometer of how well we did. We said before the game that one bit of quality would separate the teams and we hoped that it would come from us,” added Wilson, who was amused by song sung about him from the travelling contigent.

Wednesday were left frustrated by a stern Hartlepool side who struck a late leveller to earn a draw at Hillsborough. Peter Hartley had earlier given Pools a shock lead before substitute Jermaine Johnson hit a stunning equaliser. Gary Madine appeared to have won it for the Owls with a crisp strike but Antony Sweeny struck the goal of the game three minutes from time to leave Gary Megson’s men disappointed with a point from a game they dominated. Wednesday were first out of the traps when Chris O’Grady went close with a low drive on the turn inside five minutes before the big striker then saw a penalty claim turned down after tumbling beneath a Paul Murray challenge. O’Grady was soon at the heart of the action again, pouncing on a loose backpass from Neil Austin only for Scott Flinders to race off his line and thwart the danger. It was one-way traffic and the Owls came close to opening the scoring moments later. Lewis Buxton - playing in the right midfield slot in this his first game since midNovember - charged down the flank and cut inside to tee up Mike Jones, whose first effort was blocked and his second saved by Flinders. The visiting supporters had to wait until the half-hour mark before their team created a chance of note when ex-Owl Steven Haslam tried an angled chip that Nicky Weaver

scooped aside for a corner. Luke James then darted in on goal when Rob Jones’ backpass fell short but failed to advance past Weaver and Reda Johnson was on the scene to take control. Play promptly reverted to the other end after Pools’ brief flurry an Madine came within a whisker of reopening his account. Reda Johnson delivered an inviting cross from the left and the onrushing Madine beat Flinders with a deft flick only to see the ball fall agonisingly the wrong side of the post. Despite Wednesday’s almost complete control of the first half, though, while ever the game stayed goalless, Hartlepool remained a threat and so it proved just a minute after the restart. Evan Horwood swung an accurate corner into the box and Hartley was on hand to power a firm header past Weaver. But Pools’ resistance lasted just eleven minutes as Jermaine Johnson - on from the bench at half time for namesake Reda - fired a superb solo goal. The pace ace picked up possession in his own half and embarked a trademark run, leaving two defenders in his wake before firing across Flinders to haul the home side level. The ball was back in Wednesday’s court and Danny Batth headed narrowly over the bar from Chris Lines’ cross, then Miguel Llera followed suit. But the Owls continued to press and got their reward on 74 minutes when Madine showed composure in waiting for a bouncing ball to drop 15 yards from goal before drilling an unstoppable drive into the bottom corner. Possession stayed with Wednesday through the closing stages until the hosts were stunned three minutes from time by a Pools leveller. A high ball fell for Sweeney 20 yards out and the midfielder delivered a delightful volley that looped over Weaver and claimed a claim a point for the North East side.

Gary Megson spoke of his disappointment following the late goal that denied the Owls victory against Hartlepool on Saturday. After overhauling a one-goal deficit to lead 2-1, Wednesday conceded an 87th minute strike that handed Hartlepool a point. Megson said: “It’s a kick in the teeth and we have to learn how to see games out. We’ve just spoken in the dressing room about it because that’s another late goal that’s cost us. “We lost two points against Huddersfield, three against Walsall and two today, so that’s seven points in total and these things all add up.” The Owls boss also rued the openings that went begging for Wednesday, particularly in the second half. He said: “We’ve eleven chances and not just chances but good chances. But we’ve only scored two goals yet Hartlepool had two chances and scored them both. “Ryan Lowe had three chances in the short time he was on the pitch and it was a fantastic piece of skill for the second one but he was really unfortunate with the finish.” Megson revealed that Reda Johnson and Rob Jones were both substituted through injury, explaining: “Reda was feeling his back in the first half so we has to make the change at half time and Rob has gone over on his ankle. “It’s too early to say if Rob or Reda will be OK for Scunthorpe on Tuesday so we will have to wait and see.”
