WEDNESDAY LOOK TO BUILD FOR THE FUTURE M.V. MOBILITY The Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme is delighted to unveil exciting plans which will propel the charitable arm of the football club to a new level. Plans have been submitted to Sheffield City Council for the SWFCCP to build on a 5.2 acre site on Penistone Road, Sheffield. The land was recently purchased by the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme from City Estates. Under the planning application proposals, the site will be transformed from a near barren industrial area to an unrivalled, state of the art community facility holding proud status as the biggest and best of its kind in the country. The proposals outline the build as a unique, family friendly facility based on the fundamental foundations of social inclusion, participation, education,
job creation, sport, health, leisure and well being. Key partners of the groundbreaking project include Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Sheffield, carers to children and young adults with a shortened life expectancy. The extensive site projection also houses a healthcare centre and pharmacy, upskills centre, numerous classrooms, kids’ zone, indoor and outdoor pitches and ancillary accommodation. Simon Torr, Chairman of the SWFC Community Programme Board of Trustees and Chief Superintendent of Sheffield Police, said: “Sheffield Police fully supports the vision of the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme. “This facility will be a superb asset to Sheffield. It will help young people
develop both socially and emotionally, aid vital communication skills and improve self esteem, which in turn increases resilience, thus avoiding risks such as experimentation with drugs or involvement in crime. “The primary aim centres on involvement in positive activities, leading to a reduction in anti-social behaviour and gangrelated actions. In addition, the facility will provide alternative educational programmes designed to re-engage young people back into mainstream learning whilst maximising vocational opportunities.” Sarah Champion, Chief Executive of Bluebell Wood, added: “Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice is excited to be partnering with the SWFC Community Programme in the development of their new community facility.
“The SWFC Community Programme has supported the hospice for many years as they understand, and are committed to, the vital services we provide to children of South Yorkshire who will not reach adulthood. “The facility will provide a meeting space for our parent
and grandparent groups, a superb activity centre for the siblings and will give us a vital increased presence in the community we serve.” Should the planning application be successful, building will begin this summer, with completion set for the spring of 2013.

Tesco has drawn up proposals for a new community Tesco Express Store on Ecclesall Road South in Sheffield, and is seeking feedback from nearby residents. Tesco is proposing to build a small Tesco Express store on the site of the former Parkhead Garage. Local residents living near to the garage have received a leaflet explaining the proposals and are invited to provide their feedback before Tesco lodges a formal planning application for the scheme. The new store would create around 20 jobs for local people and would provide a range of convenience goods as well as fresh fruit, meat, dairy and frozen products. The store’s architects have produced a design to fit in with the scale and style of surrounding buildings. If granted planning consent, the garage would be demolished, but the existing house on the site will be retained and renovated for residential use. Tesco originally submitted a planning application for a scheme back in 2009 and we have taken the feedback given to us at that time into account when drawing up these new proposals. The site has already got planning consent for 8 new apartments and a flat conversion to number 335. However, if granted planning consent, Tesco’s proposals will be significantly smaller in scale, create new jobs and reduce the need for local people to travel elsewhere to pick up essential groceries. If anyone living further afield would like a copy of the leaflet and feedback form, they can call Kelly Edwards from Tesco’s community consultation team, Green Issues Communiqué, on 01189 839459 or email Kelly at Kelly.edwards@greenissuescommunique.com Tesco corporate affairs manager, Deborah Hayeems said: “We are pleased to show people these new and revised proposals for a community store in Ecclesall Road South and very much look forward to hearing what local people have to say about them.”

Copley’s Column
One thing is for certain, the weather forecasts are now very accurate, and it seems a long time since top weather man Michael Fish overlooked an impending hurricane. We have, thanks to marvellous technology, all known that we were in for some heavy snow last Saturday, all except the people in Sheffield and Derbyshire who were totally unprepared and brought many places to a standstill. Sheffield city centre was a ghost town on Saturday night, with no buses running, abandoned cars all over the place and Meadowhead, a main arterial road into Sheffield blocked solid. How lucky must my close pal Steve Baxendale be feeling not to have been here to have suffered this. Steve is now permanently domiciled in Thailand with his lovely wife Kate and son Baron. Since the enforced closure of his legendary club Niche, the best run club in the city, and with Gatecrasher also gone, the devotees now have to travel to Manchester and Leeds for a good night out, swelling the economy of these two cities, at the same time decreasing revenue for Sheffield. The journey from my home in Dronfield to my country residence in Brampton on Saturday evening was a nightmare, as I skidded off the road twice, after which I traversed the Dronfield by pass very slowly, much to the annoyance of other cars on the road, but I was taking no chances with the conditions as they were. We don’t ever see a snow plough these days, and obviously gritting had either not taken place or there was not nearly enough put down. This, however, is not just a local problem but we fall behind other countries on a national scale. The temperature in Munich was minus twenty seven degrees, yet every flight out of there took off. On the other hand, ( I must stop writing that ) , Heathrow cancelled two hundred flights before the snow began to fall. This , notwithstanding that thirty two million

pounds has been invested in bringing the number of snowploughs to one hundred and eighty five, and are still unable to handle the conditions. This is a national disgrace. A bit of a conspiracy has been mooted that in these tough economic times, airlines with many planes flying half empty enjoy the opportunity to merge flights, saving fuel and filling their planes. Regrettably, Heathrow’s incompetence, particularly when compared to other European cities, does little to enhance the reputation of our largest airport. We must be the laughing stock of the world. I sincerely hope that this awful weather is not here for the long haul, as I am looking forward to our first annual holiday of the year in sunny Cancun, Mexico in a few weeks time. Social network site Facebook has been useful in that people from different areas have been faithfully reporting every flake of snow that has fallen. This makes a pleasant change, as I have serious reservations about Facebook. The reason is that I have more than four hundred ‘friends’, yet have never met half of them, which is a touch annoying when some of these people are forever telling me when they go in the bath, what is on the menu for each and every meal. Thankfully I have managed to put a stop to all the invitations to join some ridiculous on line game called Farmville, where I had idiotic requests for farming equipment including a tractor. Most people have a ‘friend’s cull’ in the new year, yet nobody has deleted me. Sheffield’s favourite comedian, Jimmy Carol, tells me that Rita, Sue and Bob too is set for a nine day run at the Academy Theatre, Birdwell, following a previous sell out week to which I was privileged to be invited. Jimmy excelled in this production, as did the rest of the cast, and I am sure that this next run will fill the theatre every night. Jimmy is also set to star in Rising Damp at the end of July, and his enormous acting talent is well suited to comedy productions.

DISNEY LIVE! PRESENTS MICKEYʼS MAGIC SHOW
Weekly Wit With...
In a captivating combination, favourite Disney characters join a professional illusionist live on stage in a performance that will excite and delight children of all ages. From Feld Entertainment, the producers of Disney On Ice, Disney Live! presents Mickey’s Magic Show brings audiences into a world where Disney magic takes on a whole new meaning. The tour makes its stop in Sheffield during the children’s summer holidays on Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th August, with three performances per day of 10:30am, 1:30pm, and 4:30pm performing to a much reduced capacity Arena in an intimate theatre style setting. Disney Live! presents Mickey’s Magic Show features the special magic from legendary Disney films, performed right before your eyes: Cinderella’s rags turn into a beautiful ball gown in a split second; Aladdin’s Princess Jasmine levitates into the air; and the enchanted dancing brooms in Fantasia help sweep Minnie off her feet. The Master Magician himself – Mickey Mouse – performs astonishing illusions along with Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother, Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter, and professional illusionist Michael Barron. The magic is complimented by appearances from Disney princesses Belle and Snow White and Mickey’s pals from Toontown — Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy. “This one-of-a-kind show gives parents and children the power to see magic everywhere,” says Kenneth Feld, producer of the Disney Live! shows and producer of the most successful live illusion show of all time, Siegfried & Roy. “We take them on an inspirational journey with the Disney characters where they learn to find the magic within and all around them. At the same time, families will see world class illusions that will truly take their breath away.” The production values and stagecraft of Disney Live! presents Mickey’s Magic Show make this an exceptional family show. Famed Illusion Designer Jim Steinmeyer, who has worked with leading magicians David Copperfield, Lance Burton and Siegfried & Roy, brings his more than 20 years of world-class experience to the illusions in the show, which include a dynamic sawing-in-half duet and an awe-inspiring levitation of Minnie. In another astonishing magic act, illusionist Michael Barron levitates Princess Jasmine. The moment is pinnacled by a starry night sky, with a mood both mesmerizing and surreal. To the tune of “A Whole New World,” Michael ultimately joins Jasmine in the air as they soar high above in harmony. “In every show we do, we try to exceed audiences’ expectations,” says Director Jerry Bilik. “With the sheer magnitude of the illusions, we are able to take the audience to a place far beyond what they would ever imagine. From the moment the magic begins on stage, audiences will be in for a visual surprise as they take part in a unique Disney experience.” Michael Barron’s interactive style as an illusionist adds another dimension to the show as he brings children up on stage to assist in the magic. Whether it’s making a Magician’s Apprentice tissue paper hat or inspecting a trunk for ‘The Fastest Escape in the World,’ children in the audience have the opportunity to become part of the show. No matter if they are on stage or in their seats, children are given an unforgettable experience as magician’s helpers in Disney Live! presents Mickey’s Magic Show. Amidst a show jam-packed with surprises and spectacle, audiences learn to find the magic inside as they take part in a revolutionary blend of captivating magic. Audiences will see their favourite Disney characters including Donald Duck, Goofy, Alice in Wonderland, the Mad Hatter, and Disney Princesses; Jasmine, Belle, Snow White, and Cinderella. Mickey, Minnie and friends come together with word-class magicians to perform magic from legendary Disney films right before your eyes. See the Fairy Godmother transform Cinderella’s rags into a beautiful gown in a spilt second, the spectacular levitation of Aladdin’s Princess Jasmine and the enchanted dancing brooms of Fantasia. Anything can happen if you just believe! Tickets for Disney Live! presents Mickey’s Magic show at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th August 2012, priced for adults £19- £23, children £16.50-£20.50 & family tickets £60-£80 (booking fee may apply) are on general sale Friday 3rd February at 10am, in person at the Arena box office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk
A police constable comes in off the beat and has to report to his sergeant. “So,” says the sergeant. “Anything unusual happen today?” “Nah,” says constable, “there was just this woman who fell from the 10th floor. Stone dead.” “And that’s nothing unusual?” “Well, it would’ve been unusual if she’d survived.”
ALBERT SNODGRASS
My mate said to me earlier “I challenge you to count 86400 seconds.” I said “Sod off, that’ll take me all day!”. I saw my ex girlfriend walking towards me in the high street today. Not wanting to stop and chat to her, I quickly pretended that I was talking on the phone. She walked straight up to me and said, “You’re just pretending to be on the phone, aren’t you?” “Hold on a moment,” I said to my pretend caller. “No, I’m not. What makes you think that I’m pretending?” “You’ve got your thumb in your ear and your little finger on your lip.” After putting on 3 pairs of socks, 6 jumpers, 6 pairs of trousers, 5 woolly hats, 4 scarfs, 2 thick coats and a pair of boots, I waddled outside. Ten seconds later I was laying face down in the snow and I couldn’t move. “You’re coming with me” said the Primark security guard. ‘If it’s not broke, don’t fix it’ ! possibly the worlds most usless advice, surely ‘if it’s not broke don’t break it’ would be a better attitude. My girlfriend threatened to leave me because of my obsession with Clint Eastwood. “Go ahead,” I said, “make my day.” I went for a job interview as a scuba diving instructor yesterday. The guy interviewing me said, “This is not a good start, you look ridiculous.” Ah Valentine’s Day... it’s that time of year again when I go out and buy a great big card to send to myself, just so it looks like I’ve got a “secret admirer”. The wife usually does her nut, but it keeps her on her toes. A guy eats at a restaurant and asks for roast chicken. It turns out that it’s delicious and he calls the waiter: “Excuse me, this dish is excellent. How do you prepare the chicken?” “Well ... we just tell them that they’re going to die.” Today I went to a animal park with my brother which consisted of only one dog. To be fair it was a Shih Tzu.

SPIRITUAL
ideal job would be an interior designer. Their weakness is their dependency on others which can sometimes result in others avoiding them. Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
We all have a weakness. I am constantly surprised by how closely a person’s Zodiac sign is connected to that weakness. Often when I’m doing a psychic reading I will try to guess the client’s Zodiac sign. On other occasions I will ask the client what sign they are as this can give me valuable insight. It can tell me the best way to deliver a spirit message, particularly if the news is bad. For instance, the Aquarian will take bad news in his/her stride whereas the emotional Caner and the Pisces will struggle. I have looked at the weakness of each Zodiac sign - see if you agree! Aries - Direct, impulsive, feisty, and single minded. Their ideal job is a social worker. Their main weakness is inflexibility as once their mind is made up they rarely compromise!
Scorpio - Intense, passionate and determined. Their ideal job role would be in the police force. The secretive, sexy Scorpion loves power and his/ her weakness is jealousy. Sagittarius - Outgoing, enthusiastic and optimistic. The archer’s ideal career is in law. The archer loves to demonstrate his/her knowledge and skills. The archer’s weakness is naivety. Capricorn - Hard working and honourable. The most realistic of the signs! Their ideal job is an architect and they set strong career goals which they strive to achieve. Their weakness is their pessimistic nature.
Aquarius - Unusual, friendly, and quirky. Their ideal vocation involves science and technology. If you have an Aquarian friend take a look at Taurus - Steady and peaceable. Their ideal job is what gadgets they have. They are always the first a chef or singer. Their weakness is bullheadedness to get new technology skills. NEWS & INFORMATION
HOME FIRESAFETY
The importance of having a working smoke alarm on each floor of the house situated on the ceiling was pointed out by Helen Shimwell of South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue. These should be tested once a week and to ask a relative or neighbour rather than put yourself at risk by climbing or reaching. You can protect yourself and your family at night by following these precautions as part of your nightime routine: • Keeping doors closed • Switching off as many electrical appliances as possible • Putting out cigarettes and candles safely, and keeping matches and lighters away from children. • Checking gas appliances and put a spark guard in front of open fires • Turning off your Electric Blanket • Keeping your keys near to the appropriate doors and windows • Keeping your staircase tidy and clear • Taking a mobile phone to bed with you for emergency calls If you are trapped in a room go to the window, open it and shout “Fire, Help”. Helen also stressed the importance of making sure that keys for doors and windows are accessible and not in another room. There are a number of ways that the SYFR can help if someone is bedbound and insists on smoking in bed such as fire resistant bedding. A home safety check will look at all aspects of safety and fit free smoke alarms but even if you already have smoke alarms it is worthwhile asking for a free check. A recent article on SYFR’s website highlights the importance of working smoke alarms. A man, in his 60s, was found in his hallway and rescued from the house by neighbours before the arrival of fire crews. He was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after a fire in his kitchen last week. Firefighters found a well-developed fire in the kitchen and used breathing apparatus and hose reels to prevent it from spreading elsewhere in the house, and extinguish the blaze. However, the kitchen was severely damaged and there was smoke damage throughout the ground floor. The Watch Manager said: “There were no working smoke alarms in this property, and they could have alerted the occupier to this fire much earlier. This fire was well-developed and resulted in the man needing hospital treatment for breathing difficulties caused by smoke inhalation, and extensive damage to the kitchen.” An investigation determined that the fire was started accidentally through electrical overheating. FIVE WAYS TO ELECTRIC STAY HEALTHY BLANKET FIRE THIS WINTER http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/winterhealth/ Pages/Healthywinter.aspx
It may be cold outside but winter needn’t be the unhealthiest time of year for you and your family. Here are five ways to make sure that even when your body is telling you to hibernate you can keep healthy and fit, no matter what the weather’s like: 1. Eliminate your sleep debt “On average we sleep six-and-a-half hours a night, much less than the seven to nine hours recommended,” says Jessica Alexander, spokesperson at the Sleep Council, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of a good night’s sleep to health and wellbeing. But in winter, we naturally sleep more, due to the longer nights. “It’s perfectly natural to adopt hibernating habits when the weather turns cold,” says Jessica. “Use the time to catch up.” 2. Drink more milk You are 80% more likely to get a cold in winter so making sure your immune system is in tip-top condition is important. Milk and dairy products such as cheese, yoghurt and fromage frais are great sources of protein and vitamins A and B12. They’re also an important source of calcium, which helps keep our bones strong. Try to go for semiskimmed or skimmed milk, rather than full fat, and low-fat yoghurts. 3. Eat more fruit and vegetables When it’s cold and dark outside it can be tempting to fill up on unhealthy comfort food, but it’s important to ensure that you still keep your diet healthy and include five portions of fruit and veg a day. If you find yourself craving a sugary treat, try a juicy clementine or satsuma instead, or sweet dried fruits such as dates or raisins. Winter vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, swede and turnips can be roasted, mashed or made into soup for a comforting winter meal for the whole family. Explore varieties of fruit and veg that you may not normally eat. 4. Try new activities for the whole family Don’t use the cold winter months as an excuse to stay in and lounge around. Instead, get out with the whole family to try out a new activity, maybe ice-skating or taking a bracing winter walk on the beach. Regular exercise helps to control your weight, boost your immune system and is a good way to break the tension that can build if the family is constantly cooped up inside the house. 5. Have a hearty breakfast Winter is the perfect season for porridge. Eating a warm bowlful on a cold morning isn’t just a delicious way to start your day, it also helps you to boost your intake of starchy foods and fibre, which give you energy and help you to feel fuller for longer, stopping the temptation to snack mid-morning. Oats also contain lots of vital vitamins and minerals. Make your porridge with semi-skimmed or skimmed milk or water, and don’t add sugar or salt. Add a few dried apricots, some raisins, a sliced banana or other fruit for extra flavour and to help you hit the five-a-day target.

Send comments and letters, or relevant articles either for the Mercury page or http://www.syfire.gov.uk/1857.asp the next Newsletter to: Sheffield 50+, Room LG27, A woman has had a lucky escape after The Town Hall, her electric blanket caught fire. Sheffield, S1 2HH Three fire engines were called to a Tel: 0114 2735426 bungalow one morning. Email: sheffield50plus@yahoo.co.uk The elderly woman was already out of ww.sheffield50plus.co.uk the property when fire crews arrived. Firefighters used a hose reel to put the fire out which had caused slight damage to the bed and carpet. The woman wasn’t in the bedroom when the fire started, so luckily wasn’t injured by the fire. Electric blankets cause hundreds of fires every year. But there are simple ways to stop it happening to you. If your blanket or its flex shows any of these danger signs, you should have it checked or replaced: • Fraying fabric • Scorch marks • Exposed elements • Creasing or folding • Soiling • Damp patches • Tie tapes damaged or missing • Worn flex • Loose connections • An old BEAB safety mark – a round symbol (the new sign is white capital letters on a black background). This means it is more than 10 years old.

PETS
CANCER IN PETS It is estimated that one in three people will be affected by the disease at some point in their life. Sadly, our pets can also suffer from this potentially fatal illness. Sean Wensley, PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, says: “Why a particular pet develops cancer is not always understood. However, some types of cancer are more common than others and there are steps owners can take to reduce the chances of their pet developing some forms of this distressing disease.” Neutering, which is primarily undertaken to prevent unwanted litters, can actually help to protect pets from certain types of cancer, as well as other illnesses. For example, spaying (an operation to remove the ovaries and womb) reduces the chances of female cats and dogs developing mammary (breast) tumours. The earlier a pet is spayed, the greater its effect in preventing mammary cancer, so ask your vet at what age your pet is old enough to have this routine surgery. Spaying female rabbits prevents cancer of the womb. This is important because the condition can develop in up to 80 per cent of rabbits that are not spayed. Female rabbits can usually be spayed when they reach four to five months of age. Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) is the most common infectious cause of death in young cats but vaccination gives very effective protection. It is usually one of the routine vaccines given to kittens and cats. The first vaccine can sometimes be given as young as 6 weeks old, with the second usually given 2 to 4 weeks later. A cat will then need “booster” vaccinations at periodically throughout their life. Despite taking the above preventive measures, pets can still develop other types of cancer, and as with humans the risk of these often increases with age. Vets recommend regular check-ups for all pets (at least once a year), especially as they get older. This increases the chances of earlier detection of illnesses, which in the case of cancer can have a significant effect on the outcome. If your pet is diagnosed with cancer then the treatment will vary depending on the type and severity of the disease, as well as the overall health of your pet. Your vet may recommend one or a combination of various treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or immunotherapy, as well as pain relief. Success rates have improved in recent years, and in many cases pets can go on to make a good recovery. Early detection is key though and will significantly increase the chances of a positive outcome. In serious cases it may not be possible to cure the cancer, but treatment could improve your pet’s quality of life and extend their life expectancy. In cases where this is not possible, the kindest option may be for your pet to be put to sleep. Your vet will discuss all options with you, so that you can make the best choice for your pet’s wellbeing. Treatment for cancer, and indeed for any illness or injury, can be expensive, so PDSA recommends taking out pet insurance to help budget for unexpected veterinary costs. Most owners will naturally want to protect their pet from pain, suffering, injury and disease, but many may not realise that it is actually a legal requirement. Safeguarding a pet’s health is one of the five welfare needs outlined in the Animal Welfare Act, which are five areas of care that owners need to understand to keep their pets healthy and happy. For more information about pet health, neutering and the five welfare needs, visit www.pdsa.org.uk/pethealth

PAUL SHANE – FROM THE PIT TO TV STARDOM Continuing our series of acts that have graced clubland it seems fitting that we should feature one of South Yorkshire’s most famous sons and recent recipients of The Mercury Newspaper Lifetime Achievement award. Paul is probably best known for his part in the sitcom Hi-de-Hi! and other television roles. He was born as George Frederick Speight in Thrybergh, near Rotherham, South Yorkshire. He originally worked as a miner, but had an accident at Silverwood Colliery in 1967 by slipping in the pit-head baths on some soap, resulting in double herniated discs, and he was pensioned off from the pit at the age of 27. Two years later, he made the decision to become a professional entertainer since he already had ten years’ experience as a parttime entertainer around the pubs and clubs in South Yorkshire. His first appearance, as a straight singer, was at the Grafton pub (now demolished) on St. Ann’s Road, Rotherham. His first club booking was at St. Ann’s Club in Rotherham, for thirty shillings (£1.50). His transformation from singer to comedian was a gradual

MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
An interesting question came up on the show the other day after I mentioned a couple from Devon who have been using what is considered to be the oldest toaster in the country. What’s the oldest thing you own that you’re still using every day? It could be an item of furniture that’s been passed through the generations. In Linda of Swinton’s case that went for a chest of drawers for which she’d unfortunately lessened the value by changing the colour and the handles. Lorraine told us she’s kept her Moulinex Hand Mixer, that had originally been given as a wedding present and is a striking cream and brown colour. Barry mentioned his old Volkswagen Beetle from the 70s which is in mint condition and I told about my 16 year old vegetable peeler which has travelled the country with me on my travels. I was also reminded about my Mum’s iron mincer, strapped to the kitchen table. Many a leftover cut of Sunday roast meat would be put through there for Monday’s childhood tea – Mince Meat and mash potato!! Phil in Barnsley’s ex wife had kept her parents old manual vacum cleaner which dated back to 1913. It came with 4 cast iron wheels and a brass plate on the front, so undoubtedly a chore when trying to hoover the stairs. That said at least there would be no mains cable to worry about. Funny how these inventions have come full circle now. Don’t forget to tune in for more fun and games, chances to win (including our Bermuda holiday giveaway this week) and of course the best of the 60s, 70s and more.
CHANGES AT THE CIU CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
There have been some major changes at the CIU with the National Executive Committee being streamlined from 26 to 15. There were arguments both for and against this reduction in regional representation but in the end the pressing economic problems and diminishing numbers of clubs made the decision to reduce numbers inevitable. There were once over 4000 clubs nationwide affiliated to the CIU in its various regions- now there is around half that number and times are tough all round. Some regional branches have had to be merged and clearly there will be unhappy officials out there particularly those who have lost their positions. The CIU’s regional branches grew over time from the late 19th century onwards as clubs begun to spring up over the country. Counties and some cities with sufficient numbers of clubs formed a regional branch and these became a source of local identity as well as of representation at the national level, such was the Warwickshire branch. This has now been merged with South East Midlands which isn’t so far away geographically but clearly will take some getting used to. Having fewer regional reps on the NEC will reduce costs such as travel to and from meetings and running branch office. The intention is for every member to have an all-round knowledge of what is going on within the CIU and its regions. The NEC subcommittees have been abolished so there will be a good deal of learning going on in the months to come so that each NEC member becomes a bit of a ‘jack of all trades.’ The CIU is having to cut costs as fewer clubs on its books means less money coming in. In the elections at the end of 2011, the first woman ever was voted onto the NEC. Carol Goddard is to be congratulated on this achievement and also for her dedicated work for the CIU over more than three decades. She has certainly put in a lot of time and efforts and it’s good to finally see women entering the higher ranks of the CIU. Let’s hope she is not going to be the only representative of her gender at this level for too long. Clubs are struggling as is the CIU and it will take efforts all club members to make sure they survive- women and men together. The CIU needs all the skills and support they can get including representation in Parliament and lobbying MPs.

Interview & Preview Kaiser Chiefs - O2 Acad. - Mon 13th Feb
Words by Katy Evans
It would be tricky to picture the British Music scene without Kaiser Chiefs…not only have they been a resident feature on the UK Chart Top 40 since their formation back in 2004 (ok so they used to perform under the name of Runstan Parva since 1996 but we won’t dig that far back today), the five piece from Leeds are about as celebrated as an eighteen year old’s birthday piss-up and as successful as the bacon sandwich the next day. Already mid-way through their UK tour throughout some of the countries most intimate and exclusive venues, the band are set to perform at Sheffield’s O2 Academy on Monday 13th February. Having already taking to stages in Birmingham, Derby, Reading and Llandudno, Sheffield’s slot falls slap bang in the middle of an extensive twenty plus date tour. Although each laying their own nests in Leeds, West Yorkshire, the five piece have no scheduled plan to perform in their home town, making Sheffield’s gig closest to home so holding a special place for band, family and friends alike. ‘It’s one of the closest shows we’re doing because we’re not playing in Leeds,’ explains Kaiser Chiefs drummer Andrew White a.k.a. Whitey. ‘Lots of family will be coming down to see us. It should be really good…even though it is in South Yorkshire!’ It’s common knowledge that the indie rock band would quite probably win the award for the most chant-worthy songs about (how many times have you heard Ruby Ruby Ruby Ruby being yelled out when it comes on in town) however have taken the decision to perform in smaller, more exclusively intimate venues across the UK. Although Whitey debates whether or not his band would have the capability to take to such a massive stage as the Motorpoint Arena (O’h please!) he goes onto say ‘… well we’ve always really done smaller venues since the very start…we’ve played Sheffield Leadmill quite a few times. To be honest I don’t think we could fill Sheffield Arena! It just gets us back into the whole thing really, it’s been great so far.’ With big plans comes knackered bodies as is always the case when any band, established or otherwise tours up and down the country, however Kaiser Chiefs have got a ridiculously busy schedule ahead of them. ‘We’re off to North America in March, Australia in April then back to America. We’re not too sure what Festivals we’re going to be playing this year; it would be nice to plays Leeds and Reading Festival obviously. You tend to play the opposite festivals to what you did last year so we’ll just have to see what happens!’ Hell and we thought washing our hair and going to Tesco was a bit of a strain these days… ‘It’s nice to be playing to our own crowd who have bought tickets to come and see us play.’ Kaiser Chiefs are performing at Sheffield’s O2 Academy on 13th February. Visit the bands official website www.kaiserchiefs.com for more info on the bands upcoming tour.

Preview Allo’ Darlin - Queens Social - Fri 24th Feb Words by Katy Evans
In an age where pretty much everyone and their brothers want to be in a band and snatch international stardom, standing out from the pack is deemed simply essential. To source a glitch in the market and exploit it for all its worth seems more and more the vital factor, something which Allo’ Darling have seamlessly cottoned onto. A twee indie band based down in London, it’s excusable to not have heard of the talented quartet, although a few years down the line, we’re pretty sure this won’t be the case. It seems hard to compare Allo’ Darlin to any other band within the current UK music scene…they have an organically endearing tone, which when the Sun decides to rise would undoubtedly be the spot on summer sound track. Lead vocalist Elizabeth Morris has a voice more delicate than the rarest Faberge Egg with lyrics ‘…we can hide in my bedroom and watch cartoons all night…’ to match their playful lighthearted image. Tracks ‘My Heart Is a Drummer’ and ‘Let’s Go Swimming’ run much in the same vein, combining a shoegazey element to their expanding repertoire. Fans of Allo’ Darlin have been eagerly awaiting the release of the first single from the bands hugely anticipated second album ‘Europe’ entitled ‘Capricornia’ to be released on 13th February. A distinctly familiar and friendly tone as with the band’s self-titled first album back in 2010, ‘Capricornia’ is a nod towards the progression of Allo’ Darlin with a slightly more up-beat and focused element to its rhythmic section. Explaining the origins of the group’s new single, Elizabeth reveals, ‘Capricornia is the area in Queensland that I’m from. It has imaginary state lines, roughly around the Tropic of Capricorn, which runs directly through my hometown. There’s a nice 70s monument that marks the spot where the line passes, out on a lonely dirt road where all the kids learn how to drive. My family have lived in this area for over 6 generations but none of my generation remain. It’s a beautiful place.’ The band will be performing around the UK throughout this month, with Glasgow, Edinburgh and London all on their radar. Shakespeare in Sheffield will platform Allo’ Darlin on 24th February, an intimate venue to maintain the still largely unearthed and raw ethos of the quartet. For more information, visit the bands official website www.allodarlin.com for tickets, times and pictures.

Interview - Babybird
Words by Emma Sywyj
How would you describe the new album for people that haven’t heard it? It’s 13 songs long; it’s called The Pleasure’s of Self Destruction. It’s about how things that are good for you can have a negative side. I deal with all the big subjects like religion, love, marriage and innocence. Could you talk a little about the newest single ‘I Can’t Love You More’? The single is out next week. It’s about a couple that is having problems in their relationship. They are in car at the top of a hill and they have to discuss it before they hit this wall...It’s about a relationship that has dragged on a reached it’s course or a loveless marriage. What was your ‘You’re Gorgeous’ about? You’re Gorgeous was the biggest hit. But we had 9 top 40 hits. It’s not the kind of thing you would sing to someone. The whole idea of ‘You’re Gorgeous’ was that I was trying to reverse the idea that photographers use women and sex to sell. It’s an anti male or a tabloid song. Out of all the shows you played which show sticks out the most? Anyone in Paris. Every time we go there it seem’s to have good luck. We just did some great shows; it’s just really nice. Are there any bands at the moment you like internationally and nationally at the moment? Sigur Ros and Jónsi they’re kind of on a loop all the time. Who’s supporting you on this tour? The Tricks, they are from London and are on our label ‘Unison’. Could you tell me more about the label? About 9 years ago Johnny Depp got interested in the label, and put money into it. He is on this album and on the track ‘Unloveable’ which he made a video for as well. Are Babybird quite big in America? No not all at all. Even though we have that Johnny connection and Bruce produces it in America. No we’ve never really done it. You have to invest 18 months. I started music later in life. And as I said earlier I have children. Could you tell me more about he books you’ve written? I’ve written two books. ‘The Black Book’ Which is about a boy that has a malignant eye, when his mother dies and he try’s to find his father. The other one is called ‘Harry and Ida Swap Seats’ It’s about a couple that go on a road trip through this imaginary America. Its all fiction based nothing to do with music. What plans do you have for the future? To get through this tour...I hope we get there alive in our little van. Then I just want to write a different type of album under a different name. I had a side project called ‘Death of The Neighbourhood’ which was totally different and I want to do another one of those.
LIVE REVIEW
Babybird - O2 Academy 2 - Fri 3rd Feb Words & Photos by Emma Sywyj
The Tricks The Tricks are signed to Stephen Jones lead singer of Babybird’s record label Unison Music Group and are supporting him through his current UK tour. These guys play indie pop and are happy and upbeat. With some nice riffs and punk undertones they prove to be very enjoyable to watch. If you’re on a downer or just wanting to something to dance to, the Tricks are guaranteed to cheer the most dispondent of souls. Babybird A Provocative performance from lead singer Stephen Jones ensued. His show had more of a DADA art performance piece feel to it tonight than you’re usual rock gig. Songs like ‘Drug Time’ & ‘If You Be Mine’ were crowd favourites. His new songs had more of a beatnik vibe than his previous more commercially viable work from the 90’s. With the lyrics being the main attraction, something I haven’t seen outside of hip-hop. Sadly the show finished half an hour early with Stephen Jones jumping off stage and leaving the room after a barrage of awkward banter with the crowd. On stage he came across as self-defeating and one onlooker mentioned ‘self obsessed’. I couldn’t quite believe it; the gig had slowly turned into a car crash. The paradox is that he seems to care about the fans and the people that come to see him. Why else would he choose purposely play to small venues? But when he got up on stage he just seemed a little angered by them. At one point he accused a man in the crowd of constantly texting through the gig. The accused man replied that he was recording the performance for his kids to listen to at home. This made me cringe so much my forehead nearly imploded Another member of crowd shouted ‘We love you Stevie, you’re appreciated!’ But Stephen Jones remained unimpressed. I’ve heard of performers walking off stage and such, Cat Power is a prime example. At the time she was mentally unhinged and drinking too much, but got herself together in the end. That’s when I finally saw her perform, and it was amazing. Was this guy a little mentally unprepared? Openly expressing on stage that he was depressed and in an earlier interview mentioning his desire to just be at home with his children when he was on tour. Leading me to wonder is being on tour with Babybird right for him any more? The show was somewhere between brilliant and horrific. Whether he is a provocateur, singer, or just mentally collapsing is really up to the individual to decide. I can honestly say I have never seen a gig quite like it.
You’re Gorgeous was a track that really defined 90’s indie rock. Do you feel any pressure to create a song like that for the 00’s? There was a bit afterwards. But no....I have always played small clubs; I never had any intention to do big stadiums. Even though we did do that. I’m quite happy at this level, and also I write about quite unusual dark subjects.

NEWPORT POP DUO SUPPORT OLLY MURS Newly signed to Warner Music Entertainment, Lilygreen & Maguire are set to make a huge impact in February. The Newport-based duo will release their debut single ‘Come On Get Higher’ on February 27th to coincide with their support slot on Olly Murs’ twenty-date UK and Eire arena tour which includes a trip to the Motorpoint Arena on Sunday 12 February. Produced by Nick Southwood, ‘Come On Get Higher’ introduces Lilygreen & Maguire’s melodic, hook-infused pop to the world at large and offers a tantalising teaser for the thousands of people who will see them on the Olly Murs tour. An acoustic performance of the song has already featured on The Mahogany Blog. A songwriting and production team in the best traditions of the celebrated duos of the seventies, Jon Lilygreen and Jon Maguire worked on music together for two years prior to signing to Warner in 2011. Still in their early twenties, both had independently carved reputations for themselves on the south Wales music scene: Maguire as a local studio producer and member of a touring rock band that played shows with Wheatus and The Cribs; Lilygreen as a covers performer with an enviable ability to perform a huge catalogue of songs, and who also accidentally represented Cyprus at Eurovision in front of a global audience of 160 million people! Sharing a love of artists as diverse as The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Maroon 5 and Incubus, the two musicians developed their own sound as they pushed against the odds to earn a career in music. “For people like us, being signed is a big big step,” says Lilygreen. “Now we’ve been given this mad opportunity to perform in front of thousands and thousands of people, but if this hadn’t happened we’d still be in our room writing songs. We would’ve pushed ourselves as far as we could.” Currently co-writing material for their upcoming debut album with the likes of Gregg Alexander (The New Radicals), Ricky Ross (Deacon Blue, James Blunt) and Karen Poole (Will Young, Kylie Minogue), Lilygreen & Maguire are preparing to hit the road with Olly Murs. “I was in bands for years and we used to gig every week and I never got nervous. But sometimes I stop and think, we’re going to be playing two dates each at the CIA and the London O2!” exclaims Maguire. “We know we can play and sing, so we just need to get out there and do it. I’m excited, it’s going to be awesome.” Olly Murs Featuring support from Lilygreen & Maguire Sunday 12th February Motorpoint Arena www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk

round-up by stuart renton
I’ve invented another new word this week as we discuss the “Zimbo”. Can you guess what it means? Details below. The Only Way is Essex used to be so bad it was good (in a really bad sort of way). Now, it’s just plain bad. Shockingly awful, in fact. The cast has deserted this show faster than Kerry Katona’s red blood cells after Saturday Night Drinking Hour (which follows Saturday Afternoon Drinking Hour, which follows… oh you get the idea) leaving behind the dregs that no one likes, and a number of new additions, who are simply bizarre in the extreme. The ratings are going down faster than any one of Frankie Cocozza’s groupies at a quick trip to McDonald’s toilets (she only went in for the McNuggets). And speaking of ex-TOWIE members. Mark Wright is now co-presenting the utterly baffling Take Me out: The Gossip, which has got to be the most flimsy excuse for a show ever. What is the possible point of this show? It’s rubbish. And equally, Amy Childs, has failed to impress with her show It’s All About Amy (it really isn’t, love). The girl who can barely walk and talk at the same time failed to arouse when her show was watched by approximately the same number of people as there are inches in both cups. Don’t worry guys, we’ll see her on z-lister TV shows for the next few years, but that IS one less z-list bimbo (Zimbo) to worry about. Yes. Zimbo. The ultra ‘glamorous’ but entirely brain dead zelebrity who thinks beauty is more important than personality, humility, or education. These are the girls who wear more make up than Bruce Forsyth (who is now made up with Polyfilla for Strictly) and who resort to stupid amounts of plastic surgery in the goal of looking ‘amazing’. Zimbos appear to be all the fashion these days. Girls with absolutely nothing up top and everything sort of crammed in the middle bit. They might be easy on the eyes but they could only hold a conversation if you rammed a Speak ‘n’ Spell between their cleavage. I despair of a nation where these vacuous ultra morons are idolised by so many. What’s next: Do It Yourself Zimbo Kits, which come with silicone implants, Botox syringes, fix foot long eyelashes, and IQ stripping drugs. And, speaking of Botox, TOWIE’s poor Chloe Simms recently, lamented the fact that she couldn’t get a man. That’s because with those teeth and hair you look like the offspring of Red Rum and Esther Rantzen. The only way most of these girls will get a man is with a load of rope and a bucket load of Rohypnol. But, as many of the girls think Rohypnol is a diet aid (to keep the fat off your hips), I think the men of the UK are safe for a little bit longer.

Angler’s Corner Racing Form by Clint Walker
It’s been another crazily busy, but productive week for me; work is still progressing headlong towards the launch of the brand new Pallatrax website (keep an eye out for it, it’s awesome and very well constructed by Simon Wright for us) which will hopefully (fingers crossed) go ‘live’ sometime next week. You heard it here first! My days have been filled with angler profiles, report editing and picture photoshopping (is that a word?) in preparation for launch day, so I haven’t had time for a great deal of fishing! I did manage just three hours at Cudmore in Staffordshire, where it’s often handy to pop over and speak to the team and then wet a line in readiness for new features. I needed images this week of some Pike Pro (Bait Box) gear, and with a chill Easterly wind, I wasn’t expecting much action, but I had to try. Within a couple of hours of my herring deadbaits being lobbed out to an island margin, I’d lost a good fish and had two more pike to around 9lbs; not huge, but a welcome result in bitter weather which eventually got the better of me! Photographs completed (I dislike self-take immensely, but needs must) I then returned to the cafe for one of Carol’s cracking bacon baps and a mug of steaming tea..... just what I needed to warm up again! If you are after a dedicated predator lake, then you really should have a look at Tara Lake on the Cudmore complex; with cats to over 60lbs, pike to 25lbs and perch well over 5lbs, there is a real chance of new personal best for the price of a day ticket! I’ve also been down in Shropshire this week to complete some shop reviews for a magazine; this week I’ve been reasonably organised and telephoned every store except one to confirm that the information on their website is correct.....nothing worse than driving seventy miles to find out it isn’t! The first couple of shops went without a hitch, one was outstanding, the other less so, but with one more to do, it was another thirty odd miles before turning for home. Arriving at the one shop I hadn’t phoned, I found it was now a coffee shop!!!! Note to self....... I’ve also contacted the MD of Matrix Innovations this week in order to obtain sufficient information to compile a feature on the products they make as a UK manufacturer. The fact that I’m able to access the ‘trade’ is a definite benefit of writing as I learn so much from the people who actually put our products on the shelves. The market is currently flooded with cheaper far Eastern tackle, and I believe that Matrix (and others) should be supported as a home based supplier. It may be a little more expensive, but I’ve never seen a bad review yet, and I’m certain that their stainless products last a lifetime so why not give them a try? Hopefully the cold snap will soon end, but in the meantime, please stay safe and off the ice!

If the weather relents in time we are in for a real spectacle of NH racing on Saturday. Newbury has four races on Channel 4 from a seven race top class card that includes a re-scheduled Scilly Isles Novices Chase from last week’s abandoned Sandown card (scheduled to run at 1.30). Warwick has two races on Channel 4 to complete the terrestrial TV coverage. In Ireland on Sunday Leopardstown has four superb Grade 1 races to offer, including the Irish Hennessy Gold Cup. Newbury: 1.30 Betfair Novices’ Chase (Registered as the Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase), Grade 1, Class1, 2 miles 4 furlongs: I order of preference I like: Micheal Flips (also entered at Warwick); Lancetto; Silviniaco Conti; Cedre Bleu; Bold Sir Brian; Champion Court; Invictus; Baile Anrai. As several have double or triple entries it is difficult to know which race they will go for. With Micheal Flips and Lancetto entered elsewhere I am going to side with Silviniaco Conti who has run two excellent races on his last couple of outings – his 2 ¼ length second to Grands Crus at Kempton looking the standout piece of form. 2.05 Befair Supports Walking with the Wounded Handicap Hurdle, Class 2, 4yo+ rated 0-145, 3 miles ½ furlong:This should be a real cracker of a race if it doesn’t cut up. Thehillofuisneach, Knock a Hand and Deireadh De are all on a roll at present. Of the three I would marginally prefer Deireadh De’s chances but this race has a few possible surprises in the offing that could mean that it may go elsewhere. It looks like a race that will be run at a good pace that will suit strong staying types. Nicky Henderson has entered his good chaser Burton Port, who has good hurdles form to his name and is seeking a comeback run after injury, but he is also entered in the Betfair Denman Chase half an hour later. If he were to run in this race he would be a dangerous opponent for the form horses. Junior and Palace Jester are a couple that won last time over hurdles and who also will be dangerous, as will Nigel Twiston-Davies’

Kayf Aramis. However, my idea of the possible winner is Venetia Williams’ Stow, who is 1 from 2 at this venue and signalled that he is about ready to strike with a good effort behind Reindeer Dippin at Haydock last time. 2.35 Betfair Denman Chase, Grade 2, Class 1, 3 miles: Long Run is the standout 1/2 favourite in the ante-post markets but makes little appeal at that price in such a competitive race to be run on a flat track over a distance that is probably short of his best. Burton Port is another Henderson runner who could be dangerous but has an entry in the earlier hurdle race. Although pulled up in the Welsh National last time Carruthers goes well here and, if showing no ill effects from that effort, could get in the shake-up. Champion trainer Paul Nicholls has three entries, Aiteenthirtythree, Tidal Bay and What a Friend, who all have good chances in my opinion. However, I was impressed by the speed and accuracy of the jumping of David Bridgewater’s The Giant Bolster at Cheltenham recently and have given him the vote to follow up over this extra distance (should suit). Coming from a stable that is much less vaunted than the top ones he is likely to be a decent price on the day. 3.10 Betfair Super Saturday Chase (Registered as the Game Spirit Chase), Grade 2, Class 1, 2 miles 1 furlong:Cue Card and Sprinter Sacre are entered in this race as well as the 2.02 at Warwick but I like the look of Stagecoach Pearl who put up a career-best effort in my opinion last time when finishing 1 ½ lengths second to Quicuyo at Doncaster over this distance. French Opera is my idea of the chief threat although the novices could prove dangerous if lining up here instead of at Warwick. 3.45 Betfair Hurdle (Handicap), Grade 3, Class 1, 2 miles ½ furlong:In this most competitive of hurdle races Paul Nicholls’ Zarkandar is a worthy favourite and makes quite a bit of appeal. However, he also has Brampour and Empire Levant entered who both have decent chances. Brampour has top weight and despite his form and the 7lb claim of his good apprentice may find this a step too far at the weights. Empire Levant is very interesting having run a good race to be second to Rock on Ruby here last time and, off a feather weight, is highly likely to figure at the business end of the contest. Over the years Nicky Henderson has an excellent record in this race and is also triply represented by the unbeaten Darlan, Ericht and Soldatino. Alan King has his horses on good order at present and his Raya Star also looks to have a good chance, a remark that also applies to Brian Ellison’s Marsh Warbler. Irish trainers Willie Mullins and Edward O’Grady are represented by Final Approach and Sailors Warn respectively while Donald Mc Cain’s Desert Cry is another in with a good chance. In a race that is almost too difficult to call I also like Lucy Wadham’s Alarazi and Jonjo O’Neill’s Get Me out of Here who goes well at this venue. Having mentally tossed the proverbial coin several times in an attempt to whittle down the list of possible winners I have eventually settled on choosing Nicky Henderson’s Soldatino, albeit with minimum confidence. The selection has been relatively lightly raced and is therefore a little unexposed although his fifth behind Recession Proof here last year off 11st. 8lb was a cracking effort. Carrying 10st. 12lb this year a similar effort should see him go very close. Warwick: 1.45 Betfair. Don’t Settle for Less Handicap Chase, Class 2, 5yo+, 2 miles 4 ½ furlongs: A repeat of Marodima’s front running, lung bursting performance of last time must see him go close. That day he stretched out a pretty competitive field and still had something left at the end when challenged. There are a few others in this field who have run well recently however, notably Champion Court, Cruchain, Cucumber Run, Micheal Flips and Scoter Fontaine who all won last time out. My top rated Fine Parchment also showed some signs of returning to form last time and would be very dangerous at his best. In what looks to be a tight handicap I am siding with Micheal Flips whose win at Taunton came in an excellent time in a race of similar calibre to this. Of the others I am most fearful of Champion Court who won the Grade 2 Dipper Novices’ chase at Cheltenham last time out, staying on strongly up the hill. 2.20 Betfair Kingmaker Novices’ Chase, Grade2, Class 1, 2 miles: This is another highly competitive event. The Nicky Henderson trained Sprinter Sacre looks destined for the top and has done nothing wrong to date. His last time out 16 lengths demolition of Peddlers Cross at Kempton over Christmas was a very good effort indeed. Colin Tizzard’s pair Cue Card and Falcon island were also quite impressive winners recently, as were the Paul Nicholls’ pair Cedre Bleu (in beating Bellvano (reopposes here) at Newbury) and Pacha Du Polder (won in a canter over 2 miles 5 furlongs here when beating Carribs Leap by 12 lengths). To complicate matters further Micheal Flips is also entered in this though I hope he goes for the earlier race, a remark that applies also to Champion Court. Astracad is another last time out winner with good form behind Al Ferof before that. Finally Lancetto ran well behind Quicuyo last time at Doncaster. On balance Sprinter Sacre just about earns the vote in what looks like being a good pointer to Festival hopes. Leopardstown, Sunday: Lack of space prevents too much analysis of these races but in what look to be four truly top class races I have selected: 1.05 Spring Juvenile Hurdle, Grade 1, 2 miles: His Excellency, if absent Hollow Tree; 2.10 Deloitte Novice Hurdle, Grade 1, 2 miles 2 furlongs: Midnight Game, if absent Burn and Turn; 2.40 Dr P J Moriarty Novice Chase, Grade 1, 2 miles 5 furlongs: Sir Des Champs, if absent Last Instalment then Soll; 3.45 Hennessy Gold Cup, Grade 1, 3 miles: Diamond Harry, if absent Blazing Tempo then Synchronised.

COLD SNAP DOESNʼT HALT MILLERS PROGRESS
Raynes, was due to sit out the postponed fixture on Saturday at home to Torquay United after being dismissed in the game against Dagenham and Redbridge last week, and has been working extra hard to ensure he’s in prime condition for when his suspension is served. “I was doing a lot of extra work with Alasdair Lane and Paul Warne, which included going swimming after training. It wasn’t ideal with two reserve games being called off either. Physically and mentally you have to keep yourself in the game for when you’re needed, and for me it looks like it will be another two weeks at least.”

MILLERS NEWS www.themillers.co.uk Rotherham United defender Michael Raynes insists the players are continuing to work hard despite the recent cold snap hampering their preparations. With a snow-covered training ground, the management are working hard to make sure the players are in excellent condition, due to a variety of alternative arrangements, and Raynes spoke to www. themillers.co.uk straight after a unique session. “We’ve just been for a spin class at the Energie gym,” Raynes said. “It was a good session, like we all needed. A spinning class is time spent on a bike, with someone shouting at you telling you to go faster and faster, then turn the resistance up higher and lower. It really tests you and is very beneficial.” Not all the work is taking place in the gym, and the Millers continue to utilise their working relationships with local facilities to make sure they do spend time on the football pitch. “Last week we were at Thomas Rotherham College, but it’s quite firm so isn’t ideal to be training on too often, and the staff have been mixing it up for us a bit.”

Doncaster Rovers are proud to announce an exciting new Soccer Skills Centre for young people with disabilities, which will aim to provide more opportunity than ever for disabled people in the region to play the beautiful game. Furthering the club’s commitment to promoting the game on a wider scale, The Doncaster Rovers Community Foundation have established the centre in order to provide a sport platform for any young male or female with a disability or special educational need. The centre will provide structured coaching sessions led by our experienced coaching staff as well as plenty of opportunity for competitive meetings between local counterparts from Barnsley DFC and Rotherham DFC. The centre will also look to give the opportunity for participants to get the chance to play in a competitive league as part of the FA’s Ability Counts League, and there will be countless opportunities for small sided games and having fun playing football. Training sessions have already started and run every Saturday during term time. Players are welcome to just turn up and play at a cost of £1.50. Sessions are delivered by the highly experienced Rovers Community staff, and Rovers Disability Officer, Marie Hepburn hopes to see the Soccer Skills Centre bustling with new talent! Speaking ahead of the launch Marie said: “The Skills Centre is an exciting prospect and one we have been looking forward to for a while now.” “Through the programme we hope to see more people than ever engaging with the sport and I think that the skills centre is the perfect way to get more people than ever playing sport in Doncaster.” The Skills Centre will be open each Saturday morning 11am-12pm for any young person aged between 16-25 with a disability, and those interested are encouraged to call: 01302 370 152 or email marie.hepburn@doncasterroversfc.co.uk for more information.

El Hadji Diouf will be playing for Doncaster Rovers until at least the end of this season. The Senegalese star finally put pen to paper to extend his contract with Rovers, which was originally due to end on January 31st. He will now be in Doncaster until the 1st June, with the option of also staying at the club for an extra year. Diouf confirmed that Rovers were not the only club to offer him a contract, but he is happy in Doncaster: ‘I got a lot of offers from places far away from here, but my kids go to school here. That’s not the only reason I’ve decided to stay though: I enjoy playing football here, I have good communication with the manager and the fans like me here too’. Since joining Rovers in November, Diouf has made 9 appearances and scored 3 goals, including an excellent header against Bristol City last week. Only today, Saunders was praising that goal, which came from 25 passes between the Rovers team. Saunders told the press: ‘That was an excellent team goal, had Arsenal scored like that it would’ve been shown on the telly all week!’ El Hadji, who will now be playing in the number 10 shirt, has often been described as having a positive influence at the training ground and on the pitch, with his passion for playing and his fun attitude on the team at a difficult time.

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2011/12
OUR STYLE WILL SUIT HOSKINS BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Danny Wilson is tipping Will Hoskins to make a meaningful impression at Bramall Lane and contribute to the promotion push. Hoskins has agreed a deal with United to stay in South Yorkshire until the end of the season and Wilson feels he has added a useful component to his squad, after keeping it intact on transfer deadline day: “I have known about Will for a long time, right from his Rotherham days. I have kept an eye on him at Bristol Rovers and more recently Brighton and after getting over a few injuries he is keen to play. “When I knew of his availability I pitched us in straight away and the pull of Sheffield United was too strong for him to ignore, this club has the capacity to convince players to turn down other
clubs. “Our style of play will suit his game. He is a good team player; he has a burst of pace and an eye for goal, given the opportunity.” The Blades boss, who says Hoskins’s long-term future is very much up for discussion, is delighted competition for starting places is as fierce as ever: “His problem at first will be the same one James Beattie and Chris Porter have found - getting in the team. What we do have is fantastic competition for places and we need that ahead of what is most certainly a hectic schedule. “Our success will dictate the future with regards to Will. If we are successful we have a chance, if not we won’t, it is that simple.”
WEIR REMAINS AN OPTION BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Danny Wilson says a possible short-term contract for former Scotland skipper David Weir remains a possibility, despite the passing of the January transfer window. Weir, now 41, recently left SPL giants Glasgow Rangers to prolong his career south of the border and Wilson has been impressed by what he has seen from the former Everton man after inviting him to train with the Blades at Shirecliffe: “David has been training with us for the last two weeks, through no commitment, but if anything does happen to anyone in our squad then we need to have our finger on the pulse. “You look at David and you would think he was 30! He is a terrific athlete and a great model to the younger lads.” Wilson added: “There is no rush to do anything, he is out of contract and can sign anytime. His travelling is easy and he is very relaxed. He wants to keep playing football so he continues to have ambition.”
GIRLS LOSE OUT IN NATIONAL CUP DRAMA GAFFERS REACTION www.sufc.co.uk
Defeat in a dramatic penalty shootout denied the Sheffield United Girls Centre of Excellence a place in the last eight of a national tournament. Despite being the stronger team overall in full time and extra time, United’s U17 team came up against a top class performance by the goalkeeper of Sporting Club Albion who went onto save three penalties in the penalty shoot-out. The girls were playing in the National Centres of Excellences first national cup. The fixture was played at the Phoenix Sports Ground, Brinsworth, Sheffield.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2011/12 OWLS SECURE SECOND POSITION MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk
Wednesday came from behind to overcome a resolute Yeovil in blizzardlike conditions at Hillsborough. The Glovers largely frustrated the Owls, defending in numbers and looking to hit on the break. And this they did in the first half through Jonathan Obika but Jermaine Johnson hit back after the interval to haul the Owls level. Namesake Reda sealed victory ten minutes from time to ease the tension amongst the home fans, who went home happy with their side having added another three points to their elevation target. With much of the League 1 calendar decimated by the big freeze, Wednesday had the chance to turn the screw on their promotion rivals. And Gary Megson’s side duly bossed the early exchanges, controlling possession all over the park, albeit without calling Yeovil keeper Sam Walker into action. It was only a matter of time, though,
before Wednesday launched a serious attack and the first opening came on 18 minutes. Jon Otsemobor won a free kick right on the edge of the area and S6 debutant John Bostock drilled a thumping drive that skimmed the top of the net. Yeovil then broke on the counter and Dean Parrett might have done better bearing down on goal after cutting in from the right flank but his cross shot was blocked by David Prutton and Stephen Bywater smothered the danger. That served as a warning shot to Wednesday, who continued to dominate while wary of the odd sortie upfield by the visitors. Jermaine Johnson curled a clever effort narrowly wide on the half-hour mark before delivering a teasing cross that just evaded both Gary Madine and Chris O’Grady. But while the score stayed goalless, Yeovil were a threat and proved exactly why four minutes before half time. Gavin Williams played a neat ball through to Obika and the striker stroked past Bywater with a calm and accurate finish to give the Glovers the upper hand going into the break. O’Grady and Madine linked up well to create the first chance of the second period, with the latter steering wide in front of an expectant Kop. Wednesday made a double substitution just six minutes into the half, Lewis Buxton coming on for Otsemobor and Ryan Lowe replacing Madine.
And Lowe almost got on the scoresheet within two minutes. The former Bury man found room in the box to take a good feed from Prutton but Walker was down smartly to save. The Glovers’ keeper was powerless, though, on 57 minutes to prevent the Owls levelling the score. A bouncing ball fell to Jermaine Johnson 20 yards out and the Jamaican international let fly with a blistering shot that positively flew past Walker into the top corner. The Owls had the bit between their teeth and Reda Johnson headed wide following good work from Bostock down the channel and O’Grady went close with an angled effort. Lowe sidefooted past the post and it seemed the Glovers’ stern defence would help the visitors to a point. But the Owls got their deserved winner on 80 minutes when Reda Johnson slammed home from close range after Walker spectacularly kept out substitute Clinton Morrison’s header. Wednesday: Bywater, Otsemobor (Buxton 53), Llera, Batth, R Johnson, Bostock, Semedo, Prutton, J Johnson, O’Grady (Morrison 68), Madine (Lowe 53) Unused substitutes: O’Donnell, Lines Yeovil: Walker, Ayling, N’Gala, A Williams, Upson, G Williams, Dickson, Edwards, Parrett (Haynes-Brown 76), Hinds, Obika Unused substitutes: Stewart, Jones, MacLean, Agard
MEGSON HAPPY WITH WIN GAFFERS REACTION www.swfc.co.uk
Gary Megson said he was pleased with the Owls’ second half display against Yeovil on Saturday but insisted his side should have performed much better in the opening 45. Wednesday had to come from behind to beat the Glovers after Jonathan Obika gave Yeovil the lead in the first half. But goals from Jermaine Johnson and Reda Johnson after the break ensured victory for the Owls and a climb back to second place in the League 1 table. Megson said: “It was an insipid first half from our point of view. We played OK but we didn’t do the running like we normally do and that was disappointing. “We had to improve in the second half and thankfully we did. When we get the stats back on Monday, I would be surprised if anyone worked harder than Reda Johnson and Jermaine Johnson. “But the work rate did get better after the break and we got what I thought we deserved, which was three points.” Megson was particularly pleased with the all-round performances of the goalscorers, who proved pivotal in the Owls leapfrogging Huddersfield in the table. Reda Johnson turned in a buccaneering display at left back, while ahead of the Beninese was namesake Jermaine, who showed a level of consistency that pleased the manager. Megson said: “Jermaine is performing well and he is performing consistently, which is what we need him to do. “His goal was outstanding but that’s what he is capable of. He just needs the tap-ins to add to the spectacular but I am really pleased with JJ at the moment.” Megson added that Nicky Weaver missed the cut with a back strain but should be back in the fold sooner rather than later.
