HM THE QUEEN RECOGNISES SOUTH YORKS SCOUTS M.V. MOBILITY 27 Scouts from South Yorkshire have been honoured by HM The Queen and International adventurer Chief Scout Bear Grylls for gaining the Queen’s Scouts Award Record number of 15 young people achieving the award from eXu Explorer Scout Unit, Shefﬁeld Hallam District. The highest number of awardees during a 12 month period from one Unit since the award has been presented First Queen’s Scout from High Green for 60 years First Queen’s Scout from Shiregreen for 35 years HM The Queen and Bear Grylls greeted over 600 new Queen’s Scouts from across the UK and The Commonwealth at Windsor Castle on Sunday

29th April. The event comes at a boom time for Scouting following last week’s announcement of the Movement’s continued membership. Total numbers now exceed 525,000. Signiﬁcantly, more and more teenagers are becoming Scouts with the Explorer Scouts showing growth of 12% in 2011. The Queen’s Scout Award is the highest honour in Scouting and is awarded for outstanding personal achievement. This honour is achieved by young people aged between 16 and 25 who have completed a range of challenges, which includes service to their community, completed an expedition in wild country, undertook a ﬁve-day residential project in an

unfamiliar environment and learnt a new skill or developing an existing talent. Daniel Levick, aged 24 from Shiregreen, Shefﬁeld said “Working towards my Queen’s Scout Award has been a big challenge but lots of fun. It gave me the opportunity to discover new adventures and make new friends. Balancing all the aspects of the award with other commitments and work has been a challenge but extremely exhilarating and rewarding.” Dave Cattell, aged 20 from Ecclesall, Shefﬁeld said “The expedition I completed in the Lake District was the most challenging aspect of the award. The experience further enhanced leadership skills that I had

already gained through Scouting. The team work required to carry out a successful expedition is huge, but the reward when you get to the finishing point is the knowledge that everyone pulled together to overcome difficulties. The skills, memories and friendships I have gained will live with me forever.” Louise Boddie, aged 19 from Ecclesall, Sheffield said “The parade at Windsor was a fantastic occasion and an opportunity to remember all the wonderful experiences and to be recognised for all I’ve achieved through Scouting. To be able to share the day with the amazing friends I have made along the way made it incredibly special.” Chief Scout Bear

Grylls said “All these young people have lived the adventure of a lifetime to achieve their Queen’s Scout Awards, and I admire that spirit so much. They are huge inspirations to all the other Scouts in the UK and I am so pleased that both Scouting has honoured them today. They are amazing.” The Windsor Castle event has been held regularly since 1934 on a Sunday close to St. George’s Day (23rd April). St. George is the Patron Saint of Scouting. Since the Queen’s Scout Award was instigated, over 100,000 of these awards have been presented to young men and women for outstanding personal achievements and service to their local communities.

Well known raconteur and wit, Howard Copley, is not home in time to write his weekly roundup which gives me the opportunity to go in to print this week. I’m very pleased to report that certain sections of the events and leisure industry are doing very well indeed and some of the venues we work with are hosting really successful events. Despite the gloom and doom that we see on the news and in the press it seems to be that people can still find the money for a good night out however it’s definitely quality that counts. As readers are well aware we advertise holidays, events, gigs, nights out and literally anything to do with everything that we would prefer to do when we aren’t working. Holidays in the UK, caravanning, motorhomes and holiday parks are doing well however ‘top of the pops’ when it comes to holidays are definitely coach tours. All of our operators are doing well and it’s easy to see why. The vehicles these days are really comfortable and luxurious and I know that the operators take a great deal of care when recommending hotels and resorts. Eastbourne appears to be particularly popular. Last year Christmas bookings were well up on the previous year and even at this early time of the year our venues are starting to look towards advertising and most nights have been planned, or planning is underway. As a working DJ I played at many of these events last year and the customers had a great time enjoying good food and music in top venues. These same venues hold events throughout the year and Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, Whitley Hall, Tankersley Manor and the wonderful Clumber Park Hotel and Spa are holding great events and showing many venues how to be successful. It’s all about quality. Being a busy DJ gives me a unique insight into the real world of events and entertainment and being Managing Editor of this paper really helps when it comes to advising promoters and venues. I’m fortunate to be able to witness just how successful venues attract customers and from my perspective, and the feedback from our advertisers, business is booming. Just look at

the paper and it gives you a good indicator as to how things are really going. I’m very fortunate to be one of the resident DJs at The Bessemer fun pub on Leopold Street and we play classic oldies form the 60s, 70s and 80s. I generally DJ Saturdays and Dave Hayes is the DJ on Fridays. It took a while for these nights to become established and the previous DJ did a great job before deciding to move on to his own business at the end of last year. The Bessemer is packed every Friday and Saturday and despite other venues opening it remains the most successful fun pub in Sheffield and while customers may have tried the new venues in town from time to time the new formula that Dave and I have developed building on the successes of the past have drawn even bigger and more enthusiastic crowds than ever. If you want a great night our with great music and better value drinks prices than other venues then come and see why so many people choose The Bessemer. So there it is, business is booming and it’s not just wishful thinking or over positive reporting it’s a fact. Just to close; Howard would no doubt want me to mention United and Wednesday. I can’t remember a more closely fought battle for promotion between the city giants and it’s down to the last game, after a dramatic weekend, which now sees Wednesday as favourites for automatic promotion. We need both clubs to go up and we here at The Mercury will certainly be supporting both clubs this weekend and which ever one goes into the playoffs. I was DJ at the United ‘Player of the Year Awards’ last night at Bramall Lane and the spirit and togetherness in the Platinum Suite was a credit to the club and everyone involved with it. Similarly I’ll be at the Wednesday ‘Player of the Year Awards’ next Sunday and if last night was anything to go by it will be a great night. Howard should be back with you next week. ADAM ANT RETURNS TO SHEFFIELD Adam Ant and The Good, The Mad and The Lovely Posse, embark on a UK tour in November in support of the forthcoming release of his new album ‘Adam Ant Is The Blueblack Hussar In Marrying The Gunners Daughter’ appearing at The Plug in Sheffield on 24th November, Adam’s explosive live show, will not only feature songs from his new solo album but will also include the classic hits, Antmusic, Dog Eat Dog, Goody Two Shoes, Prince Charming, Kings Of The Wild Frontier, and the Ivor Novello, award winning Stand And Deliver. On Thursday, 16th October 1980, millions of living rooms across the UK, were set on fire by the blazing performance on Top of the Pops by Adam and the Ants. After 3 ferocious, minutes of ‘Dog Eat Dog’ the phenomenon immediately began and they would dominate the charts for the following few years with extraordinary success. But this was no ‘overnight success’, Adam Ant had been working hard behind the warpaint and feathers for his moment. It had been the culmination of years of toil; the journey had started at Hornsey College of Art, where Adam had teamed up with some college friends to form the band Bazooka Joe. With Adam on bass guitar, they played the pubs and colleges around London and it was on a cold November night, in 1975, that Adam saw a group that was to change his life forever. The Sex Pistols played their first ever gig, supporting Bazooka Joe, at St Martins College of Art and the explosive punk band, inspired Adam to start something new. He formed The Ants and performed live repeatedly, at many venues including the Vortex and The Roxy before getting a Thursday night residency at the famous Marquee club in London. The band built a huge cult following despite being unpopular with the established music press, and in 1979 they released their debut album, Dirk Wears White Søx, which topped the independent chart. It has been said that if Adam and the Ants had got on television at this time, then they would have ‘made it’ but the moderate success, made the rest of the band despondent and in early 1980, the Ants left Adam, after an offer to work with the former Sex Pistols manager, Malcolm McLaren. With a new sense of freedom and clarity, Adam immediately put his ideas for a new ‘warrior’ sound into practice and within months had put together a fresh band, including two drummers. The band signed a major label deal and recorded the album ‘Kings of the Wild Frontier’ which became a huge hit, spending 12 weeks at number one and won a ‘Best New Artist’, Brit Award. ‘Antmania’ swept the nation and Adam Ant became one of the most publicised faces in Britain. ‘Stand and Deliver’, hit the number one spot for 5 weeks, winning Adam an Ivor Novello award, ‘Prince Charming’ went straight to number one and a further 12 singles went top 30 . . . at one point, Adam had 8 singles in the top 40 in one week! ‘Goody Two Shoes’ hit the number one spot in the both the UK and Australia. Adam celebrated his continuing success in the United States, with a ‘Best New Artist’ Grammy nomination, in 1982. At a time when videos were the most popular way to promote music, Adam’s charismatic performances in some of the most lavish visuals of the period paved the way for his acting career. His first solo album, ‘Friend or Foe’ continued Adam’s success in the USA, delivering 3 top twenty hits on the Billboard Top 100 and in 1983 he appeared on NBC Television Network’s, ‘Motown 25 Special’, alongside Michael Jackson. Second solo album ‘Strip’ produced the top 5 UK hit ‘Puss in Boots’ but the BBC banned both the video and the song for the follow-up single ‘Strip’. While recording his third solo album ’Vive Le Rock’, with producer Tony Visconti, Adam set out on an acting career by appearing in a theatre production of ‘Entertaining Mr Sloane’ by Joe Orton at The Royal Exchange in Manchester. In 1985 Adam performed ‘Vive Le Rock’ at Live Aid and the next few years were spent concentrating solely on acting in a string of films including Nomads, Love Bites and Slam Dance as well as appearing in several US TV shows such as The Equalizer, Tales from the Crypt and Sledge Hammer! During the 1990’s Adam, again, split his time between acting and music chasing the performing roles whilst returning to the studio to record and release the album, ‘Manners and Physique’, which included the UK top 20 hit, ‘Room at the Top’. The follow up album, Persuasion, remains in limbo without an official release to this day, but in 1994 Adam set about recording ‘Wonderful’, his next album, in London’s Abbey Road studios to be issued the following year along with its self-titled single and the follow up ‘Gotta Be A Sin’ which were accompanied with successful tours of the UK and the United States. It would be twelve years before Adam would play live again, with an acoustic show, in 2006, at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London, where he read extracts from his recently released autobiography Stand & Deliver. The book laid bare Adam’s childhood and his well-documented public mental health battles. In 2008, Adam was presented with the ‘Q Music Icon Award’ placing him alongside fellow recipients Paul McCartney and Bryan Ferry. The Good, the Mad and the Lovely Posse, played to thousands of people last year, and after his recent successful tour of Australia, ‘the BlueBlack Hussar’ is due to appear at many festivals this coming summer, before taking his raw, raucous, raunchy campaign around the UK in November. Away up in heaven, Saint Peter sees all this and asks God, “Are you really going to let him get away with this?” “No, I guess not,” says God. The priest drives about five to six hours away, so he doesn’t bump into anyone he knows. The golf course is empty when he gets there. So he takes his first swing, drives the ball 495 yards away and gets a hole in one. Saint Peter watches in disbelief and asks, “Why did you let him do that?” To this God says, “Who’s he going to tell?”

HEELEY CITY FARM CELEBRATES NEW RARE BREED FARM STATUS

Heeley City Farm is celebrating its new Rare Breeds Farm Park status in true style with a big baby boom over the last couple of weeks. After 18 months of hard work, the farm was awarded the prestigious accolade by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) in recognition for its tireless work in preserving rare breeds of native farm animals. Lucky and Rosie the farm’s rare breed Large Black pigs were the first to add to the farm’s growing population and are first time parents to a litter of seven piglets. The three males, or boars, from the litter will carry on Dad Lucky’s rare Defender bloodline and when old enough will be sent on to other rare breed centres across the country to ensure the survival of the line. Ruth Dalton, RBST Field Officer for the North said “Heeley City Farm have always had a role in the conservation of some of our rarest farm animals and we are dellighted to welcome them onto our Approved City Farm network.” All the recent births weren’t without drama however. Ewe Bramble, one of several rare breed Soay Sheep at the City Farm, got into difficulty whilst giving birth out in the field as one of her lamb’s legs became wedged in the birth canal preventing it from being born. Luckily, Pre 16 Youth Training Manager Katie Davis was on hand to help out. “Soays are very hardy sheep so difficult births don’t usually happen” explained Sarah Wild one of the farm’s animal workers. “They originate in the outer islands of Scotland and have adapted over hundreds of years to give birth quickly and without fuss in very harsh conditions” Summer the Pygmy goat also gave birth to twin kids, a girl (nanny) and a boy (billy), called Dandelion and Burdock a few hours after Bramble. Whilst not a rare breed, first time Mum Summer is a real character and firm farm favourite. Nationally, the RBST works closely with its members to ensure the continuing survival of at risk farm animals. Its work is essential for educating the public, maintaining diversity and preventing inbred genetic problems and illnesses which could potentially wipe out the relatively few breeds of commercially bred farm animals. The farm is open 10am – 4pm seven days a week for the public to visit the animals.

Lord Howe announced new guidance on the Cancer Drugs Fund, which will help speed up access to the drugs patients need. It will mean in most cases patients will be able to access drugs within a matter of days of an application being made to the Fund. Health Minister Lord Howe said, “Our priority is to ensure that cancer patients get the drugs their doctors believe are best for them. “Today we have issued new guidance on the Cancer Drugs Fund which will further speed up applications for drugs as they will not normally need to go through the PCT funding processes prior to applying to the Fund. This will ensure patients get the fastest possible access to the drugs they need. “We will also undertake an audit of the Cancer Drugs Fund, which will provide evidence from drugs funded through the Fund for the beneﬁt of wider NHS practice.” The Department has worked with NHS colleagues to review the guidance issued in 2011, taking into account public feedback from cancer charities, to ensure cancer patients are able to better access the drugs they need.

They can help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers. Fruit and vegetables contribute to a healthy and balanced diet. Fruit and vegetables are also usually low in fat and calories (provided you don’t fry them or roast them in lots of oil). That’s why eating them can help you maintain a healthy weight and keep your heart healthy. 5 A DAY is based on advice from the World Health Organisation, which recommends eating a minimum of 400g of fruit and vegetables a day to lower the risk of serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and obesity. To get the most benefit out of your 5 A DAY, your five portions should include a variety of fruit and vegetables. This is because different fruits and vegetables contain different combinations of fibre, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. Almost all fruit and vegetables count towards your 5 A DAY. Potatoes and cassava don’t count because they mainly contribute starch to the diet.

WHAT COUNTS TOWARDS 5 A DAY? The following count towards your 5 A DAY... Fresh fruit and vegetables. Frozen fruit and vegetables. Tinned or canned fruit and vegetables. Buy the ones tinned in natural juice or water, with no added sugar or salt. Dried fruit, such as currants, dates, sultanas and ﬁgs. Fruit and vegetables cooked in dishes such as soups, stews or pasta dishes. A glass (150ml) of unsweetened 100% fruit or vegetable juice. Juice counts as a maximum of one portion a day, however much you drink. That’s mainly because juice contains less ﬁbre than whole fruits and vegetables. Smoothies. A smoothie containing all of the edible pulped fruit and/or vegetable may count as more than one portion but this depends on how it’s made. Smoothies count as up to a maximum of two portions per day. Beans and pulses. These only count as one portion a day, no matter how many you eat. That’s because they contain fewer nutrients than other fruits and vegetables. sauces, soups and puddings. Some readymade foods are high in salt, sugar and fat, so only have them occasionally or in small amounts. You can find the salt, sugar and fat content of ready-made foods on the label. Do potatoes count towards 5 A Day? Potatoes are a vegetable, but they don’t count towards your 5 A DAY. Potatoes are classified nutritionally as a starchy food. That’s because the main nutrient in potatoes is starch (carbohydrate). Also, when eaten as part of a meal potatoes are generally used in place of other sources of starch, such as bread, pasta or rice. Other vegetables that don’t count towards your 5 A DAY are yams, cassava and plaintain: they are also usually eaten as starchy foods. However, other root vegetables such as sweet potatoes, parsnips, swedes and turnips do count toward your 5 A DAY, because they are usually eaten in addition to the starchy food part of the meal. While potatoes don’t count towards your 5 A DAY, they do play an important role in your diet. They are a great choice of starchy food, particularly if they are not cooked in too much salt or fat. They are a good source of energy, fibre, B vitamins and potassium. Although potaoes don’t contain much vitamin C compared to other vegetables, in Britain we get a lot of our daily vitamin C from them because we eat so many.

Anyone planning a weekend getaway this Bank Holiday should remember it’s not just the two-legged members of the family that need to buckle-up: the four-legged ones need to be safely secured as well. “Dogs can cause accidents if they are not secure in the car, as they can distract the driver” warns PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley. “An unsecured dog can both sustain and cause serious injuries, should you be involved in an accident.” According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), if a car travelling at 30mph crashes containing an unrestrained Border Collie (22kg), the dog would hurtle forward with a force equivalent to a polar bear! PDSA advises owners to secure dogs properly, to ensure the safety of everyone (furry or otherwise) in the car. Pet seat belts or harnesses are ideal for medium or larger sized dogs, which secure the dog’s shoulders, legs, chest and back and attach to the car’s seat belt. Alternatively a dog guard can be fitted to secure your boot. For small dogs and other pets, including cats and small pets, a sturdy pet carrier is an ideal way to keep them safe. Always check that the door is securely fastened before driving, to prevent your pet from escaping and, if possible, secure the carrier in the foot well, ensuring there is enough ventilation around it. To help keep your pets safe while travelling, PDSA has put together some top tips for owners. PDSA’s Top Travel Tips: · Introduce your pet to the car from an early age. Allow your pet to explore the inside of your car in their own time (under supervision). With the car stationary, leave the doors open so they can come and go as they please and reward relaxed behaviour. Gradually build up from this – first, by just turning the engine on, then when they are comfortable with this, by going for a short drive. Building up slowly can help make young pets less nervous about travelling. · Take pets for a walk before the journey. This is a good way to burn off your pet’s excess energy to prevent them from becoming restless. · Always ensure your pet is secured in a car safety harness or pet carrier before setting out on a journey. This will prevent any distractions and will also help keep you, your passengers, and your pet safe from harm in the event of an accident. · Never let dogs lean out of a moving vehicle’s window. Their eyes or nose can be injured by debris or small stones kicked up from the road. Pets have also been known to fall out or be injured by passing vehicles. · Drive steadily. Try not to brake sharply or accelerate too fast as this can be stressful or frightening for your pet. · Make regular stops. This gives your pet a chance to stretch their legs and relieve themselves. Provide plenty of drinking water during breaks, especially during warm weather, and avoid travelling during the hottest parts of the day.
